One year of service on the board is from January to December. Each board member term is three (3) years. A board member may serve up to two consecutive years (6 years in total) on the board. After six (6) years they must step down from the board for a minimum of one (1) year. Every December five (5) board members step down, and elections are held amongst the membership to determine who will take their place. If less than 5 people are nominated for the board elections, formal elections are cancelled and those nominated are appointed to the board by acclimation. Community members not appointed to the board may volunteer their time on any Board committees that need volunteers. If anyone is interested in volunteering their time and services, please contact the Church office. 8 Thoughts from our Parish Priest My brothers and sisters, a blessed New Year! As we leave 2015 behind and begin on a new calendar year, most of us look to 2016 with optimism for a new start with renewed hope in our lives. We exchange wishes of prosperity and joy with our friends and families, and we hope that 2016 will be even better. The truth is, the novelty of New Year s day quickly wears off as we fall into the same old routine, and the only thing that changes is that we re a year older. How depressing that thought can be! We sometimes treat January 1 as a reset button for our lives. However, for Christians our reset button is every moment that we repent. We do not count the time we spend in this life, but rather the treasures and the blessings offered to us in the eternal Kingdom of God, because of our conduct and faithfulness in this life. Our year will be blessed for us, not because we brought in the new year with drunkenness and gambling, but because on January 1, as well as each day of the year, we do those things which are pleasing to God. January 1 is different because we treat it differently. What if we were to treat every day as a blessing, as an opportunity to be optimistic, joyous, and resolute in our desire to change for the better and become holier? It is not time that is the essence, but life, and what counts is what we do with the life we have on this earth. Since we do not know the time of our departure from this world, it is all the more important to treat each day as a gift from God, and a chance to repent and grow in Christ. As we enter the new year, we remember that our whole life is a feast - not only on special days, or new moons, or even the Lord s days, but a feast befitting God, a feast of sincerity and Truth. We thank God because He has given us one more year to improve, to become holy, to forgive and be forgiven, and to love. One more year to work and amass spiritual treasures. One more chance to call the poor man and make Christ a participant of our table, so we will eat and drink not for our glory, but for God s. This year, if we pray, if we fast, if we accuse, if we pardon, if we praise, if we censure, if we enter, if we exit, if we sell, if we buy, if we are silent, if we converse, if we do any thing else whatsoever, let us do it all for the glory of God, and if something is not for the glory of God, neither let it be done, nor be spoken by us. Let us not waste this year. Let us not allow our days to slip away in vanity and our years with haste, but let us make each day a day of virtue in Christ. Then every day will be a celebration of our lives in our Lord. 8

9 Thoughts from our Parish Priest Αγαπητοί Χριστιανοί, ευλογημένο το νέο έτος! Αφήνοντας πίσω το 2015 και αρχίζοντας τον καινούριο χρόνο, οι περισσότεροι βλέπουμε το 2016 με αισιοδοξία και ελπίδα για μια νέα αρχή. Ανταλλάζουμε ευχές ευημερίας και χαράς με φίλους και συγγενείς, και ελπίζουμε ότι το 2016 θα είναι καλύτερο από τον προηγούμενο χρόνο. Η αλήθεια είναι ότι η λάμψη του εορτασμού της πρωτοχρονιάς σβήνει γρήγορα, και επιστρέφουμε στην συνηθισμένη ρουτίνα, και το μόνο που αλλάζει είναι ότι είμαστε ένα χρόνο μεγαλύτεροι. Πόσο θλιβερή είναι αυτή η σκέψη! Μερικές φορές βλέπουμε την 1η Ιανουαρίου σαν μια νέα αρχή για τις ζωές μας. Όμως για τους Χριστιανούς, η νέα αρχή γίνεται κάθε φορά που μετανοούμε. Δεν μετράμε τον χρόνο που ζούμε σε αυτόν τον κόσμο, μάλλον μετράμε τους θησαυρούς και ευλογίες που μας δίνονται στην αιωνία Βασιλεία του Θεού, λόγο της συμπεριφοράς και πίστης μας σε αυτή τη ζωή. Το έτος μας θα είναι ευλογημένο, όχι επειδή το καλωσορίσαμε με το ποτό και τα χαρτιά, αλλά γιατί την 1η Ιανουαρίου, όπως και κάθε άλλη μέρα του χρόνου, κάνουμε αυτά που αρέσουν στον Θεό. Η 1η Ιανουαρίου είναι διαφορετική γιατί εμείς την βλέπουμε διαφορετικά. Πως θα ήταν η ζωή μας αν βλέπαμε κάθε μέρα σαν μια ευλογία, σαν μια ευκαιρία να είμαστε αισιόδοξοι και αποφασιστικοί στην επιθυμία μας να αλλάξουμε για το καλύτερο και να αγιαστούμε; Η ουσία δεν είναι ο χρόνος, άλλα η ζωή, και αυτό που μετράει είναι τι κάνουμε με τη ζωή που έχουμε σε αυτή τη γή. Αφού δεν ξέρουμε τη στιγμή της αναχώρησης μας από αυτόν το κόσμο, είναι τόσο πιο πολύ σημαντικό να βλέπουμε κάθε μέρα σαν ένα δώρο από τον Θεό, και σαν μια ευκαιρία να μετανοήσουμε και να μεγαλώσουμε την πίστη μας στον Χριστό. Μπαίνοντας στο νέο έτος, θυμόμαστε ότι όλη η ζωή μας είναι μια γιορτή, όχι μονό σε ειδικές ημέρες, ή καινούρια φεγγάρια, ή ακόμα και μέρες του Κυρίου μας, αλλά μια γιορτή άξια του Θεού, μια γιορτή ειλικρίνειας και Αληθείας. Ευχαριστούμε τον Θεό γιατί μας έχει δώσει ακόμα ένα χρόνο να βελτιωθούμε, να αγιαστούμε, να συγχωρήσουμε και να συγχωρηθούμε, και να αγαπήσουμε. Ακόμα ένας χρόνος να εργαστούμε και να μαζέψουμε πνευματικούς θησαυρούς. Ακόμα μια ευκαιρία να καλέσουμε τον φτωχό και να κάνουμε τον Χριστό συμμετέχων στο τραπέζι μας, ώστε να φάμε και να πιούμε, όχι για τη δόξα μας, άλλα τη δόξα του Θεού. Αυτόν τον χρόνο, αν προσευχηθούμε, αν νηστέψουμε, αν κατηγορήσουμε, αν συγχωρέσουμε, αν δοξάσουμε, αν επικρίνουμε, αν μπούμε, αν βγούμε, αν πουλήσουμε, αν αγοράσουμε, αν μείνουμε ήσυχοι, αν συζητήσουμε, αν κάνουμε οτιδήποτε άλλο, ας το κάνουμε για τη δόξα του Θεού, και αν κάτι δεν είναι για την δόξα του Θεού, ας μην το κάνουμε, και ας μην το πούμε. Ας μην σπαταλήσουμε αυτόν τον χρόνο. Ας μην επιτρέψουμε τις ημέρες μας να περάσουν μάταια, και τα χρόνια με βιασύνη, αλλά ας κάνουμε κάθε μέρα μια μέρα αρετής εν Χριστώ. Τότε κάθε μέρα θα είναι μια γιορτή της ζωής μας στον Κύριο μας. 9

10 Message from the Community President Αγαπητοί συμπάρικοι, Χρόνια πολλά σε όλους μας. Καλή και ευλογημένη χρονιά να έχουμε σε προσωπικό επίπεδο και σαν κοινότητα. Να έχουμε υγεία και πνεύμα αγάπης και καλή διάθεση, για να κάνουμε, ό τι καλύτερο μπορούμε. Θέλω να καλωσορίσω τους νέους συμβούλους να τους ευχηθώ καλή δύναμη και να φέρουν τα ταλέντα, τη φρεσκάδα τους και την καλή τους διάθεση για μια όμορφη συνεργασία. Να θυμάστε, ότι έχετε κληθεί να είστε φύλακες άγγελοι της Κοινότητας μας και όλοι μαζί να κάνουμε, ό τι πιο δημιουργικό μπορούμε για το καλό όλων. Ευχαριστώ από τα βάθη της ψυχής μου όλους που με βοήθησαν να υπηρετήσουμε τις ανάγκες της Κοινότητας. Ελπίζω μέσα σε αυτό το χρόνο να μην στενοχώρησα άθελα μου κανένα συμπάρικο, και αν το έκανα ζητώ συγνώμη. Σίγουρα δεν έγινε με κακή πρόθεση. Αυτό που με συγκίνησε πραγματικά αυτή τη χρονιά ήταν η συμμετοχή των «έξω», δηλαδή των ατόμων που δεν ήταν στα συμβούλια, που προσέφεραν αφιλοκερδώς για το καλό όλων μας. Σε αυτούς τους ανθρώπους τρέφω μεγάλη εκτίμηση και ευγνωμοσύνη. Ενδεικτικά σας αναφέρω τη χορωδία μας, τους ψάλτες μας, την κα Ειρήνη Μαυρουδή, η οποία εκτός από την τεράστια δουλειά που έχει βάλει στην χορωδία παλιότερα, τώρα βρίσκεται στην ψαλτική με τους υπόλοιπους ψάλτες και επιπλέον διδάσκει τελείως αφιλοκερδώς και τη Βυζαντινή τάξη, για να έχουμε ψάλτες για το μέλλον. Ο πατέρας Κωνσταντίνος είναι πλέον μέλος της οικογένειάς μας και πνευματικός ηγέτης της Εκκλησίας μας και με το ταπεινό του φρόνημα είναι πάντα εκεί για όλους μας. Τι να πω για το Διάκο μας και την οικογένεια του, που συμμετέχουν ενεργά παντού και σε όλα. Η Φιλόπτωχος μας συνέχεια εργάζεται, για να εκπληρώνει τις φιλανθρωπικές ανάγκες της εκκλησίας μας. Για όσους δεν το γνωρίζετε η Φιλόπτωχος είναι μέρος της Εκκλησίας μας και στενός συνεργάτης του Συμβουλίου. Το Συμβούλιο οργανώνει τα διαδικαστικά και οι Κυρίες της Φιλοπτώχου προάγουν το φιλανθρωπικό έργο της Κοινότητας. Η κα Αθηνά Ντίνος και όλο το Ελληνικό μας σχολείο κάνουν καταπληκτική δουλειά, όπως και η πρεσβυτέρα μας που εργάζεται μαζί με τα παιδιά της GOYA, αλλά και το Κατηχητικό σχολείο με τη κα Victoria Marckx και το Nτίνο Χουζούρη. Είδατε τον Άγιο Βασίλη, παραδοσιακό Πατριάρχη. 11 Message from the Community President είναι πάντα πρόθυμη να βοηθήσει όλους μας. Η Λιλιπούπολη είναι η παιδική χαρά της Κοινότητας γιατί γεμίζει τα κτίρια μας με παιδικές φωνούλες και τα μετατρέπει από άψυχα ντουβάρια σε χώρο με ζωή και γέλιο. Η χορευτική ομάδα είναι αυτό που λέει το όνομα της, μια κεφάτη παρέα, που ενώνει την παράδοση της πατρίδας μας με τη χαρά. Η ομάδα των seniors γέμισε την καρδιά μου με ευγνωμοσύνη με την βραδιά που οργανώσανε. Ελπίζω και άλλοι να ακολουθήσουν το παράδειγμα σας. Κάνοντας λοιπόν το απολογισμό της προηγούμενης χρονιάς μπορώ να πω, πως νιώθω πληρότητα και ευχαρίστηση για όσα καταφέραμε. Ήταν μια παραγωγική χρονιά και εύχομαι και φέτος να συνεχιστεί με την ίδια θέρμη. Ο Θεός να σας δίνει υγεία και ευτυχία. Dear parishioners, ~~~~~~~~~~ Happy New Year to all. May 2016 be a blessed one on a personal and community level. I would like to welcome the New Board members to wish them an exciting three years. Please bring with you your talents and positive energy. Remember that you are called to be the guardian angels of our Community. What really touched my heart was the participation of people outside of the Board that showed their love and care in special ways. 13 Church Etiquette When attending Divine Services we all have the responsibility of maintaining proper decorum and atmosphere in the church. The very first thing to keep in mind is that we are to be at Divine Services on time. The church is the House of God. Reverence and good manners are required at all times. No irreverent or irrelevant conversations should go on in the Narthex or in the church proper. There are certain times during the Divine Services when no one should be moving about, or entering the church, or being seated at a pew. Wherever a person happens to be at these moments, he or she should stop and stand reverently until the proper moment to be seated. These times are: 1. During the Doxology, while the priest is censing. 2. During the Small Entrance - The procession of the priest and altar boys with the Holy Gospel. 3. When the priest censes the Altar, icons, and congregation throughout the Divine Liturgy. 4. During the reading of the Epistle and Gospel. 5. During the sermon. 6. During the Great Entrance - the procession of the priest and altar boys with the Holy Gifts. 7. During the recitation of the Creed and Lord s Prayer (Our Father). 8. During the Consecration of the Holy Gifts. (Se Imnoumen) 9. During Holy Communion.To receive Holy Communion the faithful should come forth from the side aisles and exit via the centre aisle to return to their pew. 10. When receiving any sacrament of the church, use your baptismal/chrismation name. 11. During any special services such as Memorials or blessing of the loaves, special doxologies, etc. The general rule is that whenever the priest is outside the Holy Altar either with the censer or for giving a blessing, there should be no movement in the church. Also, we remind everyone that we should attend the Divine Liturgy and all services of divine worship from the beginning. Please remember that Parish Council members are obligated to maintain order and decorum in the church during worship. Please try to understand us. Cooperate with us. 15 Εκκλησιαστική Εθιμοτυπία Όταν είμαστε στην εκκλησία, όλοι έχουμε την ευθύνη να κρατήσουμε την σωστή ευπρέπεια και ατμόσφαιρα του ναού. Το πρώτο πράγμα που πρέπει να θυμόμαστε είναι ότι πρέπει να είμαστε στην εκκλησία στην ώρα μας. Η εκκλησία είναι ο οίκος του Θεού. Η ευλάβεια και οι σωστοί τρόποι απαιτούνται πάντα. Δεν πρέπει να γίνεται άσχετη ή ασεβής συζήτηση στον Νάρθηκα ή μέσα στον ναό. Υπάρχουν μερικές στιγμές στις ακολουθίες που κανένας δεν πρέπει να κινείται, η να μπαίνει στην εκκλησία, η να κάθεται. Όπου και να βρίσκεται ο άνθρωπος σε αυτές τις στιγμές, πρέπει να σταματήσει και να σταθεί όρθιος με σεβασμό έως την κατάλληλη στιγμή να καθίσει. Αυτές οι στιγμές είναι, 1. Στην Δοξολογία, όταν ο ιερέας θυμιάζει. 2. Στην Μικρή Είσοδο, στην διάρκεια της πομπής του Ευαγγελίου με τα ιερόπαιδα και τον ιερέα. 3. Όταν ο ιερέας θυμιάζει το Ιερό, τις εικόνες, και τον κόσμο στην διάρκεια της Θείας Λειτουργίας. 4. Στην ανάγνωση του Αποστόλου και του Ευαγγελίου. 5. Στο κήρυγμα. 6. Στην Μεγάλη Είσοδο, στην διάρκεια της πομπής των Αγίων Δώρων με τα ιερόπαιδα και τον ιερέα. 7. Στην απαγγελία του Πιστεύω και της Κυριακής Προσευχής (Πάτερ Ημών). 8. Στην Αναφορά (καθαγίαση) Των Αγίων Δώρων (Στον ύμνο Σε Υμνούμεν). 9. Στην Θεία Κοινωνία. Για να λάβουν τη Θεία Κοινωνία, οι πιστοί έρχονται από το πλάι και επιστρέφουν στις θέσεις τους από το μεσαίο διάδρομο. 10. Όταν λαμβάνουμε ένα Μυστήριο της Εκκλησίας, χρησιμοποιούμε το βαπτιστικό μας όνομα. 11. Σε ειδικές ακολουθίες, σαν τα μνημόσυνα, τις αρτοκλασίες, ειδικές δοξολογίες, κλπ. Ο γενικός κανόνας είναι, όταν ο ιερέας είναι εκτός του Ιερού, είτε με το θυμιατό ή για να δώσει ευλογία, δεν γίνεται κίνηση στην εκκλησία. Επίσης, θυμίζουμε όλους ότι πρέπει να είμαστε στην Λειτουργία και σε όλες τις ακολουθίες από την αρχή. Μη ξεχνάτε ότι τα μέλη του συμβουλίου είναι υποχρεωμένα να κρατήσουν την τάξη και την ευπρέπεια στην εκκλησία. Ζητάμε την κατανόηση σας. Συνεργαστείτε μαζί μας. Οι ιερείς είναι εδώ να υπηρετήσουν. 18 Church Iconography Program Beloved in Christ, In this bulletin you will find the program of our iconography, as well as a sample of what the remaining icons will look like. The top layer of the icons is the New Testament icons, which will be put up on the right side of the church (as you face the Altar). The bottom layer is the Old Testament icons, which will be put up on the left side of the church. The theme is Promise and Fulfilment, and it depicts the promises given by God in the Old Testament, and the parallel, or fulfilment of each promise in the New Testament. These icons will be installed on the top halves of the side walls of our church. We are also installing icons of individual saints along the lower halves of the side walls of the church. There is no program for these icons, meaning that each donor can choose the Saint to be depicted (as long as it hasn t been donated already). I can give you some suggestions if you d like. Finally, we are changing the small icons on the iconostasis (temblon) of our Altar, as the current ones have been aged and darkened. For a list of those icons, please contact me directly. The price for a scriptural scene (upper half of the walls) panel is $9,500. The price for an individual saint (lower half of the walls) is $2,500. The price of the icons on the iconostasis is $2,500. You can also make a general donation toward the iconography of the church, as many people have done already. Another option is donating an icon as a group. We are all together in this amazing journey and no one is excluded from our loving care, a fulfilment of our mission, His hand extended to all who need our help. Μαζι λοιπον σε αυτη την υπεροχη φιλανθρωπικη πορεια εκτελωντας την εντολη Του προς τον πλησιον (γιατι το χερι Του ειναι παντα ανοιχτο σε οσους εχουν αναγκη), η Φιλοπτωχος προσφερει παντα με αγαπη και επειδη η αγαπη ειναι εμπρακτος. 22 Development of a Greek Community within Charleswood Care Centre Goal: to develop a grouping of Greek Residents within the care centre. Ideally, with a large enough group there would be the opportunity to re-design one unit for the Greek Residents to include an adjoining lounge and dining area. Considerations: Menu and diet with opportunities to enjoy traditional Greek foods Celebration of significant Greek Orthodox events: Christmas, Easter and Annunciation of the Virgin Mary (August 15th) Opportunities for the priest from the Greek Orthodox Church to visit and provide services if desired. Opportunities for members of the Greek Community to visit with several Residents together in a group setting. Opportunities for members of the Greek community to come and provide entertainment and share other aspects of the culture with other Residents and staff to help the larger care centre population understand the Greek culture more fully. Tours for members of the Greek community to become familiar with the care centre. All of the above considerations are possible now within our current set-up and structure. This would help to build the sense of understanding and unity with the Greek community. Next steps: Members of the Seniors Group to visit the care centre to become more familiar with the structure and set up. They will be the main contact for the day to day planning going forward. 30 KEFI Dancers (Senior, Junior, Adult) Dance Classes for the 2015/2016 Season: Psarakia (grades 1-3) and Delfinakia (grades 4-6) will continue to have dance class during Greek School. If your child is NOT registered in Greek School and would like to participate in dance classes, please contact the Greek School for exact practice times for each grade. Jr. Kefi (grades 7-11): Classes will be Sundays from 6-7pm in the MHCC multipurpose room, unless otherwise noted. Registration fee is $50 per student. Junior Kefi Dance practice will start again January 17, Please contact Agapi Katrakis at or if you are unable to attend dance practice.
