Ἀδελφοί, πίστει παρῴκησεν Ἀβραὰμ εἰς τὴν γῆν τῆς ἐπαγγελίας ὡς ἀλλοτρίαν, ἐν σκηναῖς κατοικήσας μετὰ Ισαὰκ καὶ Ιακὼβ τῶν συγκληρονόμων τῆς ἐπαγγελίας τῆς αὐτῆς ἐξεδέχετο γὰρ τὴν τοὺς θεμελίους ἔχουσαν πόλιν, ἧς τεχνίτης καὶ δημιουργὸς ὁ Θεός. Έκτακτη Γενική Συνέλευση 3 Ιανουαρίου 2016 Ανακοινώσεις Η Κοινότητα καλεί τα μέλη της σε Έκτακτη Γενική Συνέλευση με θέμα τη συζήτηση και έγκριση τοποθέτησης νέων παραθύρων με υαλογραφίες (βιτρώ) στον ιερό ναό. Η Συνέλευση θα πραγματοποιηθεί την Κυριακή, 3 Ιανουαρίου, αμέσως μετά τη Θεία Λειτουργία στο Κοινοτικό Κέντρο. Παρακαλούμε όλα τα μέλη να παρευρεθούν. Λεπτομέρειες στάλθηκαν στα μέλη ταχυδρομικά. Τα εισιτήρια είναι 25 δολ. για ενήλικες, 12 δολ. για παιδιά 6-12 ετών και δωρεάν για παιδιά κάτω των 5 ετών. Σύλλογος Αρκάδων Κοπή της βασιλόπιττας 10 Ιανουαρίου Ο Σύλλογος Αρκάδων καλεί τα μέλη του στην κοπή της βασιλόπιτας που θα πραγματοποιηθεί κατά το γεύμα της Φιλοπτώχου Αδελφότητας, την Κυριακή 10 Ιανουαρίου, στις 12 το μεσημέρι. Tα έσοδα θα διατεθούν για τους φιλανθρωπικούς σκοπούς της Φιλοπτώχου Αδελφότητας. Η ιστορία της Ελληνικής Κοινότητας και του Φεστιβάλ σε ένα ντοκιμαντέρ -17 Ιανουαρίου 2016 Η Κοινότητα ετοίμασε ένα ντοκιμαντέρ το οποίο αφορά την ιστορική διαδρομή της, καθώς και τη διαδρομή του ετήσιου φεστιβάλ που θα προβληθεί την Κυριακή, 17 Ιανουαρίου 2016, στις 2 το απόγευμα στο Κοινοτικό Κέντρο. Η είσοδος θα επιτρέπεται από τις μ.μ. Ο αριθμός των θέσεων θα είναι περιορισμένος. Είσοδος ελεύθερη. H A.X.E.Π.A. διοργανώνει «Βραδιά Κωμωδίας» με τον Άγγελο Τσαρούχα, την Παρασκευή, 29 Ιανουαρίου 2016, στο Κοινοτικό Κέντρο. Η είσοδος θα είναι ανοιχτή από τις 7.30 μ.μ. 3 Ανακοινώσεις Φιλόπτωχος Πώληση χριστουγεννιάτικων γλυκισμάτων - Σήμερα Η Φιλόπτωχος Αδελφότης θα πωλεί, παραδοσιακά, χριστουγεννιάτικα γλυκίσματα (μελομακάρονα, κουραμπιέδες κλπ). Η πώληση θα γίνεται σήμερα, αμέσως μετά το τέλος της Θείας Λειτουργίας, στο χωλ του Ιερού Ναού. Οι μοναχές από το μοναστήρι «Παναγία η Παρηγορήτισσα» θα πωλούν Xριστόψωμα και βασιλόπιτες σήμερα, αμέσως μετά το τέλος της Θείας Λειτουργίας στο χωλ του Ιερού Ναού. Χριστουγεννιάτικα καλάθια Ευχαριστούμε τους δωρητές! Τα μέλη της Φιλοπτώχου Αδελφότητας και τα παιδιά του Κατηχητικού Σχολείου και των Ομάδων Νεολαίας, επιθυμούν να ευχαριστήσουν όλους όσοι δώρησαν τρόφιμα, χρήματα ή βοήθησαν κατά την προετοιμασία των χριστουγεννιάτικων καλαθιών. Με τη δική σας συνεισφορά είμαστε, και πάλι, σε θέση να βοηθήσουμε περισσότερες από εκατό οικογένειες που έχουν ανάγκη. Για όσους δεν πρόλαβαν να συνεισφέρουν, μπορούν να κάνουν, ακόμα και τώρα, τη δωρεά τους προς τη Φιλόπτωχο Αδελφότητα. Φιλόπτωχος Αδελφότης Pajama Drive Η Φιλόπτωχος Αδελφότης, για δεύτερη κατά σειρά χρονιά, διοργανώνει Pajama Drive και σας καλεί να την στηρίξετε. Η προσπάθεια αυτή αποβλέπει στο να συγκεντρωθούν πιτζάμες για παιδιά των οποίων οι οικογένειες αντιμετωπίζουν φτώχεια, εθισμό, ενδοοικογενειακή βία και θέματα ψυχικής υγείας. Μέσω αυτού του προγράμματος, μπορείτε να συμβάλετε σε έναν «πιο ζεστό και πιο όμορφο ύπνο» για τα παιδιά αυτά. Οι πιτζάμες πρέπει να είναι για παιδιά ηλικίας 3 μηνών έως και 12 ετών και, επιπλέον, να είναι καινούργιες και αμεταχείριστες. Μπορείτε να αφήνετε τις πιτζάμες: τις Κυριακές στο χωλ του ναού στη διάρκεια της εβδομάδας στο γραφείο του ναού τα Σάββατα στο Ελληνικό Σχολείο ή να τις φέρετε μαζί σας κατά την έναρξη. Εάν δεν έχετε χρόνο να ψωνίσετε οι ίδιοι, μπορείτε να δώσετε τη δωρεά σας στην Φιλόπτωχο που θα φροντίσει κάνει την αγορά εκ μέρους σας. 4 Epistle of St. Paul: Hebrews 11:9-10; Blessed are you, O Lord, the God of our fathers. Verse: For you are just in all you have done. BRETHREN, by faith Abraham sojourned in the land of promise, as in a foreign land, living in tents with Isaac and Jacob, heirs with him of the same promise. For he looked forward to the city which has foundation, whose builder and maker is God. And what more shall I say? For time would fail me to tell of Gideon, Barak, Samson, Jephthah, of David and Samuel and the prophets - who through faith conquered kingdoms, enforced justice, received promises, stopped the mouths of lions, quenched raging fire, escaped the edge of the sword, won strength out of weakness, became mighty in war, put foreign armies to flight. Women received their dead by resurrection. Some were tortured, refusing to accept release, that they might rise again to a better life. Others suffered mocking and scourging, and even chains and imprisonment. They were stoned, they were sawn in two, they were tempted, they were killed with the sword; they went about in skins of sheep and goats, destitute, afflicted, ill-treated - of whom the world was not worthy - wandering over deserts and mountains, and in dens and caves of the earth. And all these, though well attested by their faith, did not receive what was promised, since God had foreseen something better for us,that apart from us they should not be made perfect. Philoptochos Vasilopita Luncheon - January 10th The Greek Ladies Philoptochos Society s annual Vasilopita Luncheon will be held at the Banquet Centre on Sunday, January 10 th at 12:00 p.m. Everyone is welcome and encouraged to attend our first gathering of the year as one family where Father Alex will Bless and cut the Vasilopita. Tickets are $25 for Adults, $12 for Children 6-12 years of age, and free for Children 5 years & under. Arcadian Association Vasilopita celebration January 10th The Arcadian Association invites its members and friends to celebrate the cutting of the Vasilopita in conjunction with the Ladies Philoptochos Society on Sunday, January 10th at 12:00 p.m. All proceeds from this luncheon will go to Philoptochos so they may continue helping those in need. A Documentary-History of the HCO & Ottawa GreekFest January 17 t Our Community has produced a visual expression of the history of the Hellenic Community of Ottawa and Ottawa GreekFest. We invite you to the premier screening of this documentary on Sunday, January 17 th, 2016 at 2:00 p.m. at the Hellenic Meeting and Reception Centre. Admission is free. Seating is limited. 5 Announcements Philoptochos Christmas Bake Sale - Today The Ladies of Philoptochos will be holding their annual Christmas Bake Sale of traditional sweets in the Church Hall following the Liturgy. The sisters from Panagia the Comforter Monastery will be selling their Christmas Bread and other goodies in the Church Hall following the Liturgy. Christmas Baskets THANK YOU The Greek Ladies Philoptochos Society, our Sunday School and Youth groups would like to thank everyone who donated food, funds and their time to make the annual Christmas baskets program a success. We were able to help over 100 families this year. If you wanted to contribute and didn't have the opportunity to do so, you can still make a monetary donation to the Greek Ladies Philoptochos Society. Philoptochos - Pajama Drive Please help the Greek Ladies Philoptochos for the second year provide new cozy pajamas to children in need in Ottawa and the Greater Ottawa Valley. These families face difficult challenges such as poverty, addiction, domestic violence and mental health issues. Through the Pajama Drive, you are contributing to a warmer, more loving bedtime. The pajamas are to be new and unused, a complete set for ages 3 months to 12 years old. Please feel free to drop off pajamas on Sundays in the Church Hall; during the week in the Church office; or on Saturdays at Greek School. Abraham was the father of Isaac, and Isaac the father of Jacob, and Jacob the father of Judah and his brothers, and Judah the father of Perez and Zerah by Tamar, and Perez the father of Hezron, and Hezron the father of Ram, and Ram the father of Amminadab, and Amminadab the father of Nahshon, and Nahshon the father of Salmon, and Salmon the father of Boaz by Rahab, and Boaz the father of Obed by Ruth, and Obed the father of Jesse, and Jesse the father of David the king. So all the generations from Abraham to David were fourteen generations, and from David to the deportation to Babylon fourteen generations, and from the deportation to Babylon to the Christ fourteen generations. Now the birth of Jesus Christ took place in this way. When his mother Mary had been betrothed to Joseph, before they came together she was found to be with child of the Holy Spirit; and her husband Joseph, being a just man and unwilling to put her to shame, resolved to divorce her quietly. But as he considered this, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream, saying, "Joseph, son of David, do not fear to take Mary your wife, for that which is conceived in her is of the Holy Spirit; she will bear a son, and you shall call his name Jesus, for he will save his people from their sins." All this took place to fulfill what the Lord had spoken by the prophet: "Behold, a virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and his name shall be called Emmanuel" (which means, God with us). When Joseph woke from sleep, he did as the angel of the Lord commanded him; he took his wife, but knew her not until she had borne a son; and he called his name Jesus.

6 Getting the Sheep Over the Bridge Περνώντας το αρνί από τη γέφυρα Let me share with you a story by Corrie Ten Boom because it shows how God uses disappointments to draw us closer to Him. I once heard about a mother who lost her child. She was very embittered and rebellious. One day she walked alone in the fields with a heavy heart. Suddenly she noticed a flock of sheep. The shepherd tried to have the sheep cross over a narrow bridge into another field, but the sheep did not want to set their feet on the shaky little bridge. They went right and left and turned just like sheep do, but they did not obey the shepherd. Finally, the shepherd grabbed a little baby lamb that had been pressing itself against the soft wool of its mother s body. The man now carried the little lamb across the narrow bridge and put it into the meadow on the other side. Immediately, the mother sheep, bleating loudly, followed across the bridge, and then all the others followed. The bereaved mother had observed all this with interest. Suddenly she knew that this was a message for her. She realized that for many years she had stubbornly gone her own way instead of following the call of the Good Shepherd: Come unto me? Now he had taken away her little son and brought him safely to the other side. His purpose was that she would come to Him, and lead the way for many others to come to Jesus. This is what happened. She went to the Lord and gave Him her heart and life. Then she was able to be a witness to many others and help them to find the way to the Good Shepherd. The great disappointment of the death of her child became for this mother one of the great blessings of her life. God uses our disappointments to try to point our life in the direction of His kingdom. Anthony Coniaris, Daily Vitamins for Spiritual Growth. Ήταν πολύ πικραμένη και δεν την ένοιαζε πια για τίποτα. Μια μέρα, περπατούσε μόνη της στους αγρούς με την καρδιά γεμάτη θλίψη. Ξαφνικά, βλέπει ένα κοπάδι από πρόβατα. Ο βοσκός προσπαθούσε να τα κάνει να περάσουν πάνω από μια στενή, κι όχι πολύ σταθερή, γέφυρα και να πάνε απέναντι αλλά τα ζώα δεν τον υπάκουαν με τίποτα. Πήγαιναν δεξιά κι αριστερά και γύριζαν γύρω-γύρω, έτσι όπως ακριβώς κάνουν τα πρόβατα, αλλά κανένα δεν άκουγε τις διαταγές του βοσκού. Τότε, εκείνος παίρνει αγκαλιά ένα μικρό πρόβατο, που είχε κολλήσει πάνω στη μάνα του, και αφού πέρασε τη γέφυρα το άφησε κάτω στον απέναντι αγρό. Βλέποντας να της παίρνουν το παιδί της, η μάνα αρχίζει να βελάζει δυνατά κι ακολουθεί το βοσκό περνώντας έτσι το γεφύρι. Ύστερα την ακολούθησε και ολόκληρο το κοπάδι. Αυτή η σκηνή κίνησε το ενδιαφέρον της χαροκαμένης μάνας και, ξαφνικά, κατάλαβε πως τούτο ήταν ένα μήνυμα για την ίδια. Συνειδητοποίησε πως, για πολλά χρόνια, είχε ακολουθήσει, πεισματικά, το δικό της δρόμο αντί να ακούσει το κάλεσμα του Καλού Βοσκού: «Ελάτε σε εμένα». Εκείνος είχε πάρει και το μικρό της γιο και τον είχε οδηγήσει, με ασφάλεια, στην αντίπερη όχθη. Σκοπός Του ήταν να έλθει κι εκείνη κοντά Του και έτσι να ανοίξει και για άλλους το δρόμο προς τον Ιησού. Έτσι και έγινε. Η μητέρα έδωσε την καρδιά και τη ζωή της σ Εκείνον κι έτσι βοήθησε και πολλούς άλλους να βρουν το δρόμο που οδηγεί προς τον Καλό Βοσκό.» Ο μεγάλος καημός για το θάνατο του παιδιού της, έγινε για αυτή τη μητέρα μια από τις μεγαλύτερες ευλογίες της ζωής της.
