3 3 Christmas Reflection 2014 O Son of God, born of the Virgin, Save us who sing to you, alleluia Once again this Christmas we celebrate the birth of the only begotten Son and Logos of God. We celebrate the mystery of the Incarnation the mystery that has marked mankind s history. God Himself came to live among us. And the word became flesh and dwelt among us, full of grace and truth; we have beheld His glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father (John 1:14). The birth of our Savior reaches beyond the limits of space and time and becomes present today. Today, Christ is born of the Virgin in Bethlehem. Today, He who knows no beginning now begins to be and the Word is made flesh (Doxastikon of the Christmas Orthros). The word today underscores that the Savior s birth affects and permeates the whole of history. The Eternal God entered into the limits of time and space in order to make possible our encounter with Him today. God offers to each of us today the possibility of receiving Him as did the shepherds in Bethlehem centuries ago, so that He may be born in our lives in order to transfigure them by His presence. The Logos of God was sent by God the Father to save us who live today from the evil deeply rooted in man and in history. The evil of separation

4 4 from God. The prideful presumption of being self- sufficient, of trying to compete with God. Of trying to take His place. Of deciding what is good and evil. Of being the master of life and death (Genesis 3:1-7). This is the great evil, the great sin from which we cannot save ourselves without God s help. O Son of God, born of the Virgin save us who sing to you, alleluia. The Incarnation should be considered in the light of the Paschal Mystery. Both are part of the redemptive work of Christ. Jesus incarnation invites us to direct our gaze to His death and resurrection. Christmas and Easter are both feasts of the Redemption. Easter celebrates redemption as the victory over sin and death: It signals the final moment, when the glory of the Theanthropos shines forth as the light of day. Christmas celebrates redemption as God s entrance into history, His becoming man in order to restore man to God. It marks the initial moment when we begin to see the first light of dawn. Just as dawn heralds the light of a new day, so Christmas announces the cross and the glory of the resurrection. The Fathers of the Church interpreted Christ s birth in the light of the whole work of Redemption which finds its summit in the Paschal mystery. God becomes man. He takes on our flesh to conquer death and sin. St. Basil the Great writes, God assumes flesh to destroy death hidden within it. Just as antidotes to poison, when ingested, eliminate the poison s effects, and as the shadows within a house clear with the light of the sun, so death, which had dominated human nature, was destroyed by the presence of God. And as ice remains solid in water as long as night endures and shadows reign, but melts at once by the sun s heat, so death (which had reigned until the coming of Christ) as soon as the grace of God our Savior appeared and the Sun of Justice arose, was swallowed up in victory (1 Corinthians 15:54), for it cannot coexist with Life (Homily on Birth of Christ, 2: PG 31, 1461). In another text St. Basil issues this invitation: Let us celebrate the world s salvation and mankind s birth. Today Adam s guilt has been remitted. Now we need no longer say: you are dust and to dust you shall return (Genesis 3:19), but rather: united to Him who descended from heaven, you shall be admitted into heaven (Homily on the Birth of Christ, 6: PG 31, 1473). As we gather with our families this Christmas, may we encounter the tenderness and love of the Incarnate Logos who stoops down to our limitations, to our weaknesses, to our sins. He lowers Himself to us. St. Paul affirms that

5 5 Jesus Christ though He was in the form of God emptied Himself, taking the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of men (Philippians, 2:6-7). God lowers Himself to the point of being born in a manger as a prelude of His self- abasement in the hour of His passion. God s love passes by way of a manger in Bethlehem to the Sepulcher of Jerusalem Let us live this wondrous event. The Son of God is born today to bring us to Himself. We are invited today (and every day) to discover the presence of God s saving love in our midst. The Logos of God comes this Christmas to transform our lives by the power of His love. Let us contemplate the mystery of Christ s birth against the backup of the Pascal mystery to the redemption won for us on the cross and the glory of the resurrection. May we prepare ourselves to become mangers to embrace our Savior who comes today to reign in our hearts and souls. 6 6 Χριστουγεννιάτικη Περισυλλογή 2014 «Ω, Υιέ Θεού, ο εκ Παρθένου γεννηθείς, Σώσον ημάς, ψάλλοντάς Σοι, Αλληλούϊα» Για μιά ακόμη φορά εορτάζουμε και πάλι στα φετεινά Χριστούγεννα τη γέννηση του Μονογενούς Υιού και Λόγου του Θεού. Εορτάζουμε το μυστήριο της Ενσαρκώσεως το μυστήριο που σημάδεψε την ιστορία της ανθρωπότητας. Ο ίδιος ο Θεός ήλθε να ζήσει ανάμεσά μας. «Και ο Λόγος σάρξ εγένετο και εσκήνωσεν εν ημίν, καί εθεασάμεθα τήν δόξαν αυτού, δόξαν ως μονογενούς παρά πατρός, πλήρης χάριτος και αληθείας» (Ιωάν. 1:14). Η γέννηση του Σωτήρα μας επεκτείνεται πέρα από τα όρια χώρου και χρόνου και γίνεται παρούσα και σήμερα. «Σήμερον ο Χριστός εν Βηθλεέμ γεννάται εκ Παρθένου. Σήμερον ο άναρχος άρχεται, και ο Λόγος σαρκούται» (Δοξαστικό του Όρθρου των Χριστουγέννων). Ο λόγος υπογραμμίζει σήμερα ότι η γέννηση του Σωτήρα μας επηρεάζει και διαπερνάει ολόκληρη την ιστορία. Ο αιώνιος Θεός εισήλθε μέσα στα όρια του χώρου και του χρόνου για να κάνει δυνατή την συνανάντησή Του με μας σήμερα. Ο Θεός προσφέρει στον καθένα μας και στην καθεμιά μας σήμερα την δυνατότητα να Τον δεχτούμε όπως Τον δέχτηκαν οι ποιμένες της Βηθλεέμ πριν πολλούς

7 7 αιώνες, για να γεννηθεί μέσα στη ζωή μας και να την μεταμοφώσει με την παρουσία Του. Ο Λόγος του Θεού εστάλη από τον Θεό Πατέρα για να σώσει εμάς που ζούμε σήμερα από το κακό που είναι βαθειά ριζωμένο στον άνθρωπο και στην ιστορία. Είναι το κακό του χωρισμού από το Θεό. Είναι το υπερφύαλο θράσος της αυτάρκειας, της προσπάθειας μας να συναγωνιστούμε με το Θεό, να σφετεριστούμε τη θέση Του, να καθορίσουμε εμείς τί είναι καλό και τι κακό, να είμαστε εμείς ο κύριος της ζωής και του θανάτου (Γεν. 3:1-7). Αυτό είναι το μεγάλο κακό, η μεγάλη αμαρτία από την οποία δεν μπορούμε να σωθούμε χωρίς την βοήθεια του Θεού. «Ω, Υιέ Θεού, ο εκ Παρθένου γεννηθείς, Σώσον ημάς, ψάλλοντάς Σοι, Αλληλούϊα». Η Ενσάρκωση πρέπει να κατανοηθεί υπό το φώς του Πασχαλινού Μυστηρίου. Αυτά τα δύο είναι αναπόσπαστα μέρη του απολυτρωτικού έργου του Χριστού. Η ενσάρκωση του Ιησού μας προσκαλεί να κατευθύνουμε τό βλέμμα μας στο θάνατο και στην ανάσταση. Τα Χριστούγεννα και το Πάσχα είναι και τα δύο εορτές της Απολύτρωσης. Το Πάσχα εορτάζουμε την απολύτρωση ως την νίκη κατά της αμαρτίας και του θανάτου: Η εορτή αυτή σηματοδοτεί την τελική στιγμή κατά την οποία λάμπει η δόξα του Θεανθρώπου ως το φώς της ημέρας. Τα Χριστούγεννα εορτάζουμε την απολύτρωση ως την είσοδο του Θεού στην ιστορία, την ενανθρώπησή Του για την επιστροφή του ανθρώπου προς τον Θεό. Η εορτή αυτή σηματοδοτεί την πρωταρχική στιγμή κατά την οποίαν ξεπροβάλλει το πρώτο φως της αυγής. Όπως η αυγή αναγγέλει το φως της νέας ημέρας, έτσι και τα Χριστούγεννα εξαγγέλουν τον σταυρό και την δόξα της αναστάσεως. Οι Πατέρες της Εκκλησίας ερμήνευσαν την γέννηση του Χριστού υπό το φώς του όλου έργου της Απολύτρωσης, το οποίο αποκορυφώνεται στο Πασχαλινό μυστήριο. Ο Θεός γίνεται άνθρωπος. Ντύνεται την σάρκα μας για να κατανικήσει τον θάνατο και την αμαρτία. Ο μέγας Βασίλειος γράφει, «Ο Θεός έλαβε σάρκα για να νικήσει τον θάνατο που κρυβόταν μέσα της. Όπως το αντίδοτο στο δηλητήριο, όταν εισέρχεται στο στομάχι, εξαλείφει τις δηλητηριώδεις ενέργειές του, και όπως τα σκοτεινά μέρη ενός σπιτιού διαλύονται από το φώς του ήλιου, έτσι και ο θάνατος, που είχε κυριαρχήσει πάνω στην ανθρώπινη φύση, καταστράφηκε με την παρουσία του Θεού. Και όπως ο πάγος παραμένει συμπαγής μέσα στο νερό εφ όσον κρατάει η νύχτα και βασιλεύει το σκοτάδι, αλλά λειώνει πάραυτα με την ζέστη του ήλιου, έτσι και ο θάνατος (που είχε βασιλέψει μέχρι τον ερχομό του Χριστού) μόλις εμφανίστηκε η χάρις του Θεού και Σωτήρα μας και ανυψώθηκε ο Ήλιος της Δικαιοσύνης κατεπόθη εν νίκη (Α Κορ. 15:14), γιατί δεν μπορεί να συνυπάρξει με την Ζωή» (Ομιλία είς την Γέννησιν του Χριστού, 2, PG 31:1461).

8 8 Σε ένα άλλο κείμενό του ο Άγιος Βασίλειος απευθύνει την εξής πρόσκληση: «Ελάτε να εορτάσουμε την σωτηρία του κόσμου και την γέννηση της ανθρωπότητας. Σήμερα η ενοχή του Αδάμ συγχωρήθηκε. Τώρα πιά δεν χρειάζεται να λέμε, Γη ει και εις γην απελεύση (Γέν. 3:19), αλλά μάλλον, ενωμένος μ Εκείνον που κατήλθε από τον ουρανό, θα γίνεις και εσύ δεκτός στον ουρανό (Ομιλία εις την Γέννησιν του Χριστού, 6, PG 31:1473). Καθώς συγκεντρωνόμαστε ξανά σαν οικογένειες αυτά τα Χριστούγεννα, ας αποβλέψουμε στην τρυφερότητα και στην αγάπη του Ενσαρκωθέντος Λόγου που κατεβαίνει στα περιορισμένα όριά μας, στις αδυναμίες μας, στις αμαρτίες μας. Κατεβαίνει ο Ίδιος αυτοπροσώπως σε μας. Ο Απόστολος Παύλος δηλώνει ότι ο Ιησούς Χριστός «αν και ήταν έν μορφή Θεού... εκένωσε τον Εαυτόν Του, παίρνοντας την μορφή δούλου, και γενόμενος όμοιος με τους ανθρώπους» (Φιλιπ. 2:6-7). Ο Θεός κατεβάζει τον Εαυτόν Του στο σημείο που γεννιέται σε μια φάτνη αλόγων σαν προοίμιο της Αυτοταπείνωσής Του στην ώρα του πάθους Του. Η αγάπη του Θεού περνάει μέσα από την φάτνη της Βηθλεέμ και κατευθύνεται στον Τάφο της Ιερουσαλήμ. Ας ζήσουμε αυτό το θαυμαστό γεγονός. Ο Υιός του Θεού γεννιέται σήμερα για να μας φέρει κοντά Του. Προσκαλούμαστε σήμερα (όπως και καθημερινά) να ανακαλύψουμε ανάμεσά μας την παρουσία της σωτήριας αγάπης του Θεού. Ο Λόγος του Θεού έρχεται αυτά τα Χριστούγεννα να μεταμορφώσει τις ζωές μας μέ την δύναμη της αγάπης Του. Ας αναλογισθούμε και πάλι το μυστήριο της γέννησης του Χριστού σε συσχετισμό με το Πασχαλινό μυστήριο με την απολύτρωση που κέρδισε για μας επάνω στον σταυρό και την δόξα της αναστάσεως. Ας προετοιμάσουμε τους εαυτούς μας να γίνουμε φάτνες που θα αγκαλιάσουν τον Σωτήρα που έρχεται σήμερα να βασιλεύσει στις καρδιές και στις ψυχές μας. 9 9 LETTER FROM THE PRIEST CHRISTMAS 2014 Dear Members and Friends of our Parish of St. John the Baptist, The month of December is marked by the Great Feast of Christmas, which St. John Chrysostom calls The Metropolis of the Feasts of the Lord. This year s December has 4 Sundays, the first two are specified as the tenth and the eleventh of St. Luke, and the last two are associated with the Great Feast of Christmas and are known as the Sunday before and the Sunday after Christmas. The Gospel Lessons are taken from the Gospels of St. Luke and St. Matthew respectively. On the First Sunday, Dec. 7, we observe our Annual Agape Luncheon, which gives the opportunity to express our love for our parish and for one another. Our preparation for Christmas by fasting and spirtitual renewal which began on the 15 th of November will end on the Eve of Christmas. Christmas is an immovable (fixed) Feast and is always celebrated on December 25, but its celebration includes a Forefeast (Dec ) and an Afterfeast (Dec ). Particularly important is the Christmas Eve (Παραμονή), Dec. 24, because it is marked by exceptional Services. These include The Great Hours, which are also called The Royal Hours, because in Byzantine times they were attended by the Emperor and his entire Court. They are followed by Great Vespers and the Liturgy of St. Basil the Great. Also important is the first day after Christmas, Dec. 26, known as the Synaxis of the Theotokos, when we honor our spiritual Mother as the most important person after the Lord in the Feast of Christmas and generally in the Church. Since Christmas marks the beginning of our Lord s economy for our salvation, I chose as special reading a solemn and inspiring article of one of the twentieth century Saints of Orthodoxy, the Serbian Father St. Justin Popovic, which refers to the profound meaning of the Incarnation of our Lord that marks the beginning of our salvation. May the Lord bless us all during these holy days and renew our dedication to Him and our commitment to one another. Fr. George Dion. Dragas

Pineo BROOKLINE -- Metropolitan Methodios, leader of the Greek Orthodox Metropolis of Boston, recently returned from a trip to Istanbul, Turkey where he witnessed first-hand a historic meeting between Pope Francis and Orthodox Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew of Constantinople. Metropolitan Methodios spoke with The Pilot Dec. 5 about his experience of this important ecumenical moment. "Catholicism and Orthodoxy are blessed, in our days, with two leaders that are visionary, that care about the voice of the Church. In a world that is fragmented by division, hatred, and war, here are two men that are leading their churches by example, and I hope God

11 11 gives them both many years to live to continue leading us to what is God's will," the metropolitan said. In Turkey from Nov. 24 through Nov. 30, the metropolitan of Boston was there for the Orthodox synod and the entirety of Pope Francis' visit, which took place from Nov. 28 through Nov. 30. "It was a blessing for me. This was the second time I have served on the Orthodox synod in Constantinople, and both times I happened to be there when a pope visited," said Metropolitan Methodios. In a tradition established after the Second Vatican Council, the pope and the patriarch normally send delegations to their counterpart each year for the celebrations of the mutual feast days of their patron saints -- the Catholic patronal feast of Sts. Peter and Paul on June 29 and the Orthodox patronal feast of St. Andrew on Nov. 30. This year, Pope Francis traveled to Turkey personally. "His humility and his kindness just emanate from this man's presence. He just has a beautiful smile. He is humble," Metropolitan Methodios said. In Turkey Metropolitan Methodios was present at liturgies celebrated by Pope Francis at Istanbul's Catholic Cathedral of the Holy Spirit and Patriarch Bartholomew at the Patriarchal Church of St. George. Patriarch Bartholomew celebrated the Divine Liturgy for the Feast of St. Andrew, both leaders gave remarks, and the two issued a joint statement. "They made it clear in both their elocutions, and in the joint statement, that they are going to urge an international theological dialogue between Orthodox and Catholic theologians. They are urging them to continue striving for theological unity," Metropolitan Methodios said. Enthroned as the bishop of Boston in 1984, Metropolitan Methodios has experience on ecumenical matters at a both a local and international level. Metropolitan Methodios currently serves as co-chair of the North American Orthodox-Catholic Theological Consultation. Metropolitan Methodios noted that while meetings and collegiality between a pope and a patriarch connote improved relations between the two Churches, they do not by themselves recreate the unity the Church had in the first thousand years before the Great Schism. "We would love to be able to commune together, to come to the table of the Lord and share the sacrament, but we cannot do that unless we have worked out the various issues that still exist," he said.

12 12 To restore the unity that existed, he said, work must be done at lower levels in and between the Catholic and Orthodox communities. "Before you get to the top floor, you have to take the elevator up, stop along the way, and have your embrace open to the theology of both sides, work together, study the documents, go back to the seven ecumenical councils, and how the Fathers of the Church from all over the world were able to come together and place the foundations of Christian beliefs. That has to be done again, now, and I think it is," he said. He said the work of unifying the Church should continue, and the example set by the pope and patriarch should be reflected by the clergy in the churches. However, he noted that the ecumenical patriarch does not have the same unilateral power as the pope. "He does not have the same authority as the pope of Rome in the Catholic Church. The ecumenical patriarch is the first among equals. He is the patriarch of 'New Rome,' which is Constantinople, and he convenes the Holy Synod, which is comprised of the other patriarchs and leaders of the autocephalous Orthodox Churches, but decisions are made collegially. The patriarch of Constantinople cannot intervene in the affairs of the Church of Alexandria, or Antioch, or Russia for that matter," Metropolitan Methodios said. Metropolitan Methodios has worked alongside Cardinal Seán P. O'Malley for years on matters of Catholic and Orthodox unity in matters of faith and sometimes in the public square. The two men also jointly led a group of Boston Catholics and Orthodox to Rome and Constantinople on pilgrimage in 2007; in 2012 the metropolitan joined Cardinal O'Malley in an interreligious coalition against a push to legalize physician assisted suicide. "We speak at each other's divine services in order to assure the congregations -- both the Catholic congregations and the Orthodox congregations -- that we're still unfortunately not united 100 percent, but we are working towards that," he said. Metropolitan Methodios said the mutual respect demonstrated by the two leaders should be reflected throughout Catholicism and Orthodoxy. He particularly referenced the humility demonstrated in a widely publicized photo of Pope Francis receiving a blessing from Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew. "I think that Bartholomew respects and loves Francis like a brother. It's something that should be replicated by all of us on the local level, between myself and Cardinal O'Malley, between bishops in Detroit, and California, in Los Angeles, and all over the world. If we showed that humility and that leadership, I think our people would follow," he said.

Ἐκφράζομεν τήν εἰλικρινῆ καί σταθεράν ἀποφασιστικότητά μας, ὑπακούοντες εἰς τό θέλημα τοῦ Κυρίου ἡμῶν Ἰησοῦ Χριστοῦ, νά ἐντείνωμεν τάς προσπαθείας μας διά τήν προώθησιν τῆς πλήρους ἑνότητος ὅλων τῶν Χριστιανῶν καί, ὑπεράνω ὅλων, μεταξύ τῶν Καθολικῶν καί τῶν Ὀρθοδόξων. Ὡσαύτως, προτιθέμεθα νά στηρίξωμεν τόν θεολογικόν διάλογον, ὁ ὁποῖος ἤρχισεν ἀκριβῶς πρό τριάκοντα

14 14 πέντε ἐτῶν ὑπό τοῦ Οἰκουμενικού Πατριάρχου Δημητρίου καί τοῦ Πάπα Ἰωάννου Παύλου Β' ἐδῶ εἰς τό Φανάριον, καί ὁ ὁποῖος ἀσχολεῖται κατ' αὐτάς μέ τά πλέον δύσκολα ζητήματα, τά ὁποῖα ἐσημάδευσαν τήν ἱστορίαν τῶν διαιρέσεών μας καί ἀπαιτοῦν προσεκτικήν καί λεπτομερῆ μελέτην. Πρός τόν σκοπόν αὐτόν παρέχομεν τήν διαβεβαίωσιν τῆς διαπύρου προσευχῆς μας ὡς Ποιμένων τῆς Ἐκκλησίας, ζητοῦντες ἀπό τούς πιστούς μας νά ἑνώσουν τάς προσευχάς των μέ τάς ἰδικάς μας «ἵνα πάντες ἕν ὦσιν, ἵνα ὁ κόσμος πιστεύσῃ» (Ἰω. ιζ, 21). Ἐκφράζομεν τήν κοινήν ἡμῶν ἀνησυχίαν διά τήν τρέχουσαν κατάστασιν εἰς τό Ἰράκ, τήν Συρίαν καί ὅλην τήν Μέσην Ἀνατολήν. Εἴμεθα ἡνωμένοι ἐν τῇ ἐπιθυμίᾳ μας διά εἰρήνην καί σταθερότητα καί εἰς τήν θέλησιν νά προωθήσωμεν τήν ὑπέρβασιν τῶν συγκρούσεων διά τοῦ διαλόγου καί τῆς καταλλαγῆς. Ἐνῷ ἀναγνωρίζομεν τάς προσπαθείας, αἱ ὁποῖαι ἤδη καταβάλλονται πρός προσφοράν βοηθείας εἰς τήν περιοχήν, συγχρόνως καλοῦμεν ὅλους ὅσοι ἔχουν εὐθύνην διά τάς τύχας τῶν λαῶν νά ἐπιτείνουν τήν δέσμευσίν των ἔναντι τῶν κοινοτήτων αἱ ὁποῖαι ὑποφέρουν, περιλαμβανομένων καί τῶν χριστιανικῶν, καί νά τάς ἐνισχύσουν νά παραμείνουν εἰς τήν χώραν τῆς καταγωγῆς των. Δέν δυνάμεθα νά ἀποδεχθῶμεν μίαν Μέσην Ἀνατολήν χωρίς Χριστιανούς, οἱ ὁποῖοι ὁμολογοῦν τό Ὄνομα τοῦ Ἰησοῦ ἐκεῖ ἐπί δύο χιλιάδες χρόνια. Πολλοί ἀπό τούς άδελφούς καί τάς ἀδελφάς μας διώκονται καί ὑπεχρεώθησαν βιαίως νά ἐγκαταλείψουν τάς ἑστίας των. Φαίνεται ὅτι ἀκόμη καί ἡ ἀξία τῆς ἀνθρωπίνης ζωῆς ἔχει χαθῆ τό ἀνθρώπινον πρόσωπον δέν ὑπολογίζεται πλέον καί δύναται νά θυσιασθῇ δι ἄλλους σκοπούς. Καί, τό τραγικώτερον, πάντα ταῦτα συναντοῦν τήν ἀδιαφορίαν τῶν πολλῶν. Ὅπως μᾶς ὑπενθυμίζει ὁ Ἅγιος Παῦλος, «εἴτε πάσχει ἕν μέλος, συμπάσχει πάντα τά μέλη, εἴτε δοξάζεται ἕν μέλος, συγχαίρει πάντα τά μέλη» (Α' Κορ. ιβ, 26). Τοῦτο ἀποτελεῖ τόν νόμον τῆς Χριστιανικῆς ζωῆς, καί μέ τήν ἔννοιαν αὐτήν δυνάμεθα νά εἴπωμεν ὅτι ὑπάρχει ἐπίσης καί ἕνας οἰκουμενισμός τῆς ὀδύνης. Ὅπως ἀκριβῶς τό αἷμα τῶν μαρτύρων ὑπῆρξε τό σπέρμα τῆς δυνάμεως καί ἀναπτύξεως τῆς Ἐκκλησίας, κατά τόν ἴδιον τρόπον ἡ συμμετοχή εἰς τάς καθημερινάς θλίψεις ἠμπορεῖ νά ἀποβῇ ἀποτελεσματικόν ὄργανον ἑνότητος. Ἡ τρομερά κατάστασις τῶν χριστιανῶν καί ὅλων ὅσοι ὑποφέρουν εἰς τήν Μέσην Ἀνατολήν καλεῖ ὄχι μόνον εἰς συνεχῆ προσευχήν, ἀλλά καί εἰς τήν κατάλληλον ἀνταπόκρισιν ἐκ μέρους τῆς διεθνοῦς κοινότητος. Αἱ σοβαραί προκλήσεις, τάς ὁποίας ἀντιμετωπίζει ὁ κόσμος εἰς τήν παροῦσαν κατάστασιν, ἀπαιτοῦν τήν ἀλληλεγγύην ὅλων τῶν ἀνθρώπων καλῆς θελήσεως, καί διά τοῦτο ἀναγνωρίζομεν ὡσαύτως τήν σπουδαιότητα τῆς προωθήσεως

15 15 ἐποικοδομητικοῦ διαλόγου μετά τοῦ Ἰσλάμ ἐπί τῇ βάσει ἀμοιβαίου σεβασμοῦ καί φιλίας. Ἐμπνεόμενοι ἀπό κοινάς ἀξίας καί ἐνισχυόμενοι ἀπό γνήσια ἀδελφικά αἰσθήματα, Μουσουλμάνοι καί Χριστιανοί καλοῦνται νά ἐργασθοῦν ἀπό κοινοῦ χάριν τῆς δικαιοσύνης, τῆς εἰρήνης καί τοῦ σεβασμοῦ τῆς ἀξιοπρεπείας καί τῶν δικαιωμάτων κάθε προσώπου, ἰδιαιτέρως εἰς τάς περιοχάς ἐκείνας, ὅπου ἄλλοτε ζοῦσαν ἐπί αἰῶνας μέ εἰρηνικήν συνύπαρξιν, καί ἤδη ὑφίστανται ἀπό κοινοῦ τήν τραγικότητα τῆς φρίκης τοῦ πολέμου. Ἐπί πλέον, ὡς Χριστιανοί Ἡγέται, καλοῦμεν ὅλους τούς θρησκευτικούς ἡγέτας νά ἐπιδιώξουν καί ἐνισχύσουν τόν διαθρησκειακόν διάλογον καί νά καταβάλουν κάθε προσπάθειαν διά τήν οἰκοδόμησιν ἑνός πολιτισμοῦ εἰρήνης καί ἀλληλεγγύης μεταξύ ἀνθρώπων καί λαῶν. Ἐνθυμούμεθα, ἐπίσης, ὅλους τούς λαούς, οἱ ὁποῖοι δοκιμάζονται ἀπό τά δεινά τοῦ πολέμου. Ἰδιαιτέρως προσευχόμεθα διά τήν εἰρήνην εἰς τήν Οὐκρανίαν, χώραν μέ ἀρχαίαν Χριστιανικήν παράδοσιν, καί ἀπευθύνομεν ἔκκλησιν πρός ὅλα τά ἐμπλεκόμενα μέρη νά ἀκολουθήσουν τήν ὁδόν τοῦ διαλόγου καί τοῦ σεβασμοῦ τοῦ Διεθνοῦς Δικαίου πρός τόν σκοπόν τοῦ τερματισμοῦ τῶν συγκρούσεων, ὁ ὁποῖος θά ἐπιτρέψῃ εἰς ὅλους τούς Οὐκρανούς νά ζήσουν μέ ἁρμονίαν. Ἡ σκέψις μας στρέφεται πρός ὅλους τούς πιστούς τῶν Ἐκκλησιῶν μας ἀνά τόν κόσμον, τούς ὁποίους χαιρετοῦμεν παραθέτοντες αὐτούς εἰς τόν Σωτῆρα μας Χριστόν, ὥστε νά εἶναι ἀκάματοι μάρτυρες τῆς ἀγάπης τοῦ Θεοῦ. Ὑψώνομεν τήν διάπυρον προσευχήν μας πρός τόν Κύριον ὅπως χαρίσῃ τήν δωρεάν τῆς εἰρήνης ἐν ἀγάπῃ καί ἑνότητι εἰς ὅλην τήν ἀνθρωπίνην οἰκογένειαν. «Αὐτός δέ ὁ Κύριος τῆς εἰρήνης δῴη ὑμῖν τήν εἰρήνην διά παντός ἐν παντί τρόπῳ. 16 16 Joint Declaration of His Holiness Pope Francis and His All-Holiness Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew (November 30, 2014) We, Pope Francis and Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew I, express our profound gratitude to God for the gift of this new encounter enabling us, in the presence of the members of the Holy Synod, the clergy and the faithful of the Ecumenical Patriarchate, to celebrate together the feast of Saint Andrew, the first called and brother of the Apostle Peter. Our remembrance of the Apostles, who proclaimed the good news of the Gospel to the world through their preaching and their witness of martyrdom, strengthens in us the aspiration to continue to walk together in order to overcome, in love and in truth, the obstacles that divide us. On the occasion of our meeting in Jerusalem last May, in which we remembered the historical embrace of our venerable predecessors Pope Paul VI and the Ecumenical Patriarch Athenagoras, we signed a joint declaration. Today on the happy occasion of this further fraternal encounter, we wish to re affirm together our shared intentions and concerns. We express our sincere and firm resolution, in obedience to the will of our Lord Jesus Christ, to intensify our efforts to promote the full unity of all Christians, and above all between Catholics and Orthodox. As well, we intend to support the theological dialogue promoted by the Joint International Commission, instituted exactly thirty five years ago by the Ecumenical Patriarch Dimitrios and Pope John Paul II here at the Phanar, and which is currently dealing with the most difficult questions that have marked the history of our division and that require careful and detailed study. To this end, we offer the assurance of our fervent prayer as Pastors of the Church, asking our faithful to join us in praying "that all may be one, that the world may believe" (Jn 17:21). We express our common concern for the current situation in Iraq, Syria and the whole Middle East. We are united in the desire for peace and stability and in the will to promote the resolution of conflicts through dialogue and reconciliation. While recognizing the efforts

17 17 already being made to offer assistance to the region, at the same time, we call on all those who bear responsibility for the destiny of peoples to deepen their commitment to suffering communities, and to enable them, including the Christian ones, to remain in their native land. We cannot resign ourselves to a Middle East without Christians, who have professed the name of Jesus there for two thousand years. Many of our brothers and sisters are being persecuted and have been forced violently from their homes. It even seems that the value of human life has been lost, that the human person no longer matters and may be sacrificed to other interests. And, tragically, all this is met by the indifference of many. As Saint Paul reminds us, "If one member suffers, all suffer together; if one member is honoured, all rejoice together" (1 Cor 12:26). This is the law of the Christian life, and in this sense we can say that there is also an ecumenism of suffering. Just as the blood of the martyrs was a seed of strength and fertility for the Church, so too the sharing of daily sufferings can become an effective instrument of unity. The terrible situation of Christians and all those who are suffering in the Middle East calls not only for our constant prayer, but also for an appropriate response on the part of the international community. The grave challenges facing the world in the present situation require the solidarity of all people of good will, and so we also recognize the importance of promoting a constructive dialogue with Islam based on mutual respect and friendship. Inspired by common values and strengthened by genuine fraternal sentiments, Muslims and Christians are called to work together for the sake of justice, peace and respect for the dignity and rights of every person, especially in those regions where they once lived for centuries in peaceful coexistence and now tragically suffer together the horrors of war. Moreover, as Christian leaders, we call on all religious leaders to pursue and to strengthen interreligious dialogue and to make every effort to build a culture of peace and solidarity between persons and between peoples. We also remember all the people who experience the sufferings of war. In particular, we pray for peace in Ukraine, a country of ancient Christian tradition, while we call upon all parties involved to pursue the path of dialogue and of respect for international law in order to bring an end to the conflict and allow all Ukrainians to live in harmony. Our thoughts turn to all the faithful of our Churches throughout the world, whom we greet, entrusting them to Christ our Saviour, that they may be untiring witnesses to the love of God. We raise our fervent prayer that the Lord may grant the gift of peace in love and unity to the entire human family. "May the Lord of peace himself give you peace at all times and in every way. 18 18 Ο ΛΟΓΟΣ ΣΑΡΞ ΕΓΕΝΕΤΟ του Oσίου Ιουστίνου Πόποβιτς μεταγλώττηση στην Νεοελληνική π. Γεωργίου Δ. Δράγα Ό όσιος και θεοφόρος πατήρ Ιουστίνος γεννήθηκε στις 25 Μαρτίου του 1894, ξηµερώµατα του Ευαγγελισµού στην πόλη Βράνιε της νοτίου Σερβίας. Ό πατέρας του ονοµαζόταν Σπυρίδων και ή µητέρα του Αναστασία. Κατά την βάπτιση έλαβε το όνοµα Ευάγγελος. Ή οικογένεια του πατέρα του ήταν εκ παραδόσεως ιερατική και είχε δώσει στην ορθόδοξη Εκκλησία τουλάχιστον επτά ιερωµένους. Αυτό εξάλλου φανερώνει και το επώνυµο Πόποβιτς=Παπαδόπουλος. Από µικρός είχε την τάση προς τα πνευµατικά. Διάβαζε το Ευαγγέλιο, Συναξάρια Αγίων και Πατερικά συγγράµµατα. Το 1914 αποφοίτησε από τη Θεολογική Σχολή του Αγίου Σάββα στο Βελιγράδι αλλά ο πρώτος παγκόσµιος πόλεµος τον διέκοψε. Το 1916 έκάρη µοναχός και ονοµάστηκε Ιουστίνος. Αµέσως µετά σπούδασε στην Αγία Πετρούπολη (Ρωσία) και το 1919 έγινε καθηγητής θεολογίας στο Σρἐµσκυ Κάρλοβτσι. Έπειτα σπούδασε στην Αθήνα όπου έγινε διδάκτορας γράφοντας διατριβή για τον Άγιο Μακάριο τον Αιγύπτιο. Εν συνεχεία δίδαξε θεολογία στο Κάρλοβτσι στην Πριζρένη και στο Μοναστήριο (Βίτολα). Το 1930 εργάστηκε σαµ ιεραπόστολος στη Τσεχοσλοβακία. Το 1934 έγινε καθηγητής Δογµατικής στη Θεολογική Σχολή του Βελιγραδίου και δίδαξε εκεί µέχρι το 1945 οπότε απολύθηκε από το κοµµουνιστικό καθεστώς. Τότε αποσύρθηκε στη Μονή Τσέλιε όπου έζησε και εργάστηκε για 31 χρόνια µέχρι την κοίµησή του εν Κυρίω στις 25 Μαρτίου, Εκεί επετέλεσε ένα τεράστιο συγγραφικό έργο που συµπεριλαµβάνει την περίφηµη τρίτοµη Δογµατική του, τους 12 τόµους Βίων Αγίων, και τους 7 τόµους της Ερµηνείας της Καινής Διαθήκης. Το παρόν άρθρο είναι από το βιβλίο του Άνθρωπος και Θεάνθρωπος που εκδόθηκε στα ελληνικά το 1969 και θεωρείται κλασσικό έργο ορθόδοξης θεολογικής σκέψης. Η Ιερά σύνοδος της Σερβικής Ορθοδόξου Εκκλησίας τον κατέταξε µεταξύ των Αγίων τον Μάρτιο του 2010.

19 19 Κατὰ τὴν ἡμέρα τῶν Χριστουγέννων ὁ Λόγος σὰρξ ἐγένετο (Ἰωάν. 1, 14). Αὐτὴ εἶναι ἡ πρώτη καὶ ἡ μεγαλύτερη χαρμόσυνη ἀγγελία, τὸ πιὸ μεγάλο «εὐαγγέλιο», ποὺ ἦτο δυνατὸν νὰ δώσῃ ὁ Θεὸς στὸν ἄνθρωπο καὶ ὁ οὐρανὸς στὴ γῆ. Ἐὰν θέλετε, ὁλόκληρο τὸ Εὐαγγέλιο τοῦ οὐρανοῦ καὶ τῆς γῆς ἀποτελεῖται ἀπὸ τέσσερις λέξεις: «ὁ Λόγος σὰρξ ἐγένετο». Ἔξω ἀπὸ αὐτὸ καὶ χωρὶς αὐτό, ἄλλος εὐαγγελισμὸς δὲν ὑπάρχει γιὰ τὸν ἄνθρωπο, οὔτε σ αὐτὸν οὔτε στὸν ἄλλο κόσμο. Ἐδῶ εὑρίσκεται κάθε τί, τὸ ὁποῖον εἶναι αιώνια ἀναγκαῖο γιὰ τὴν ἀνθρώπινη ὕπαρξη σε ὅλους τοὺς κόσμους. Μοναδικὸ χαρμόσυνο μήνυμα γιὰ τὴν ὕλη σε ὅλες τις μορφές της. Ἀπὸ τὴν πλέον σκληρή καὶ πυκνὴ ὕλη τοῦ διαμαντιού, μέχρι τὴν πλέον λεπτὴ καὶ ἀφανὴ τοῦ ἠλεκτρονίου καὶ φωτονίου. «Ὁ Λόγος σὰρξ ἐγένετο»! Αὐτὸ σημαίνει ὅτι ὁ Λόγος ἔγινε Θεοσάρξ, ἔτσι ὥστε οὔτε ὁ Θεὸς παύει νὰ εἶναι Θεός, οὔτε... ἡ σὰρξ νὰ εἶναι σάρξ. Μόνο ποὺ ἡ σὰρξ στη μυστική ἀλλὰ πραγματική ἔνωσή της μὲ τὸ Θεὸ ζῇ καὶ ἀκτινοβολεῖ με ὅλες τις τελειότητες τοῦ Θεοῦ. «Ὁ Λόγος σὰρξ ἐγένετο» σημαίνει: ὁ Λόγος ἔγινε ψυχή, Θεο- ψυχή, ἀλλὰ παρὰ ταῦτα ὁ Θεὸς παραμένει Θεὸς καὶ ἡ ψυχὴ ψυχή. Μόνο ποὺ ἡ ψυχὴ περιπατάει στοὺς δρόμους τῶν αἰώνιων καὶ χαροποιῶν μυστηρίων τοῦ Θεοῦ σε ὅλους τοὺς ὁρατοὺς καὶ ἀοράτους κόσμους. «Ὁ Λόγος σὰρξ ἐγένετο» σημαίνει καὶ τοῦτο: ὁ Λόγος ἔγινε αἴσθηση, Θεο- αἴσθηση. Ἐν τούτοις, ὁ Θεὸς δὲν παύει νὰ εἶναι Θεός, ἂν καὶ ἔγινε ἀνθρώπινη αἴσθηση, ἐνῷ πάλιν ἡ αἴσθηση παραμένει ἀνθρώπινη αἴσθηση. Μὲ τὴ διαφορὰ ὅτι ἡ αἴσθηση ζῇ ὅλο τὸ θεῖο ἄπειρον σαν δικό της. «Ὁ Λόγος σὰρξ ἐγένετο» σημαίνει ἀκόμη καὶ τοῦτο: ὁ Λόγος ἔγινε κτίσμα, Θεο- κτίσμα, «ὁ ὢν γίνεται, ὁ ἄκτιστος κτίζεται, ὁ ἀχώρητος χωρεῖται» (ἁγ. Γρηγορίου Θεολόγου, Λόγος 45, 9. ΡG 36, 633-6). Μὲ αὐτὸ ἡ φύση τοῦ Θεοῦ δὲν χάνει τὰ θεῖα της ἰδιώματα, ὅπως καὶ ἡ φύση τοῦ κτίσματος δὲν χάνει τὰ κτιστά της ἰδιώματα. Μόνο ποὺ τὸ κτίσμα περνάει διὰ μέσου θαυμαστῶν μεταμορφώσεων, οἱ ὁποῖες τὸ ὁδηγοῦν ἀπὸ δόξης εἰς δόξαν. «Ὁ Λόγος σὰρξ ἐγένετο», τέλος, σημαίνει: ὁ Λόγος ἔγινε ἄνθρωπος, πλήρης ἄνθρωπος, θεάνθρωπος. Ἐν τούτοις, ὁ Θεὸς παραμένει εἰς τὰ ὅριά Του καὶ ὁ ἄνθρωπος στὰ δικά του, ἂν καὶ εἶναι ἡνωμένοι στενώτατα, ἀδιαίρετα καὶ ἀχώριστα. Μόνο πὼς ὁ ἄνθρωπος οἰκειοποιεῖται ὅλες τις ἀπόρρητες τελειότητες τοῦ Θεοῦ καὶ ἀποκτάει τὴ θεία αἰωνιότητα καὶ τὴ θεία δόξα, γίνεται «ὁμόθεος», κατὰ τὴν ἔκφραση

20 20 τῶν Ἁγίων Πατέρων. Ὁ Θεὸς Λόγος ἔγινεν ἄνθρωπος γιὰ νὰ ἐπαναφέρῃ τὸν ἄνθρωπο στὸ ἀρχέτυπό του, στὸ Δημιουργό του, διότι ὁ ἄνθρωπος δημιουργήθηκε στὴν ἀρχὴ διὰ τοῦ Θεοῦ Λόγου ἔχωντας τὸν χαρακτήρα τοῦ Θείου Λόγου (Γεν. 1, Ἰωάν. 1, 9. Κολ. 3, 10). Ὁ Θεὸς Λόγος ἔγινε σὰρξ γιὰ νὰ ἐπαναφέρῃ τὴ σάρκα στὴ πρωταρχική της λογο- κεντρική κατάσταση, διότι «πᾶν ὃ γέγονεν διὰ τοῦ Θεοῦ Λόγου γέγονεν» ( Ἰωάν. 1, 3. Κολ. 1, 16). Ἐπειδὴ ὁ Θεὸς Λόγος εἶναι ὁ δημιουργὸς ὅλης τῆς κτίσεως, Αὐτὸς εἶναι καὶ τὸ θεμέλιο ὁλόκληρου τοῦ κοσμικοῦ οἰκοδομήματος (πρβλ. ἁγ. Μαξίμου, ΡG 91, 668 καὶ ). Ἡ ἁμαρτία καὶ τὸ κακὸ ἀποτελοῦν τὴν τραγικὴ καὶ παράλογη ἀπόπειρα τοῦ ἀνθρώπου νὰ ἀπομακρύνῃ τὸ Θεὸ Λόγο από τά θεμέλια τοῦ σύμπαντος. Ὁ Θεὸς Λόγος σαρκώθηκε γιὰ νὰ ἐπαναφέρῃ τὴν κτίση πρὸς τὸν Δημιουργό, διότι Αὐτὸς εἶναι τὸ πρῶτο θεμέλιό της καὶ ἡ βάση της. Γιά τοῦτο δίκαια εὐαγγελίζεται ὁ θεῖος Ἀπόστολος Παῦλος ὅτι ὁ Θεάνθρωπος Χριστὸς ἀποτελεῖ τὸ μοναδικὸ ἀρραγὲς καὶ αἰώνιο θεμέλιο καὶ ὅτι «θεμέλιον ἄλλον οὐδεὶς δύναται θεῖναι παρὰ τὸν κείμενον» (1 Κορ. 3, 11). Ὅποιος θεμελιώνει καὶ οἰκοδομεῖ ἐπάνω σ αὐτή τήν ἀρραγή καὶ ἀσάλευτη Πέτρα τοῦ σύμπαντος εἶναι «ἀνὴρ φρόνιμος», ἡ προσωπικότης του ἔχει λογοποιηθῇ, ἔχει δηλαδὴ ἑνωθῇ μὲ ὅλα τὰ αἰώνια ἰδιώματα τοῦ Θεοῦ Λόγου, γιὰ τοῦτο καὶ παραμένει ἀκλόνητος σε ὅλες τίς θύελλες καὶ τίς καταιγίδες τῶν ἀνθρώπινων σεισμῶν καὶ τοῦ χάους (πρβλ. Ματθ. 5, Ρωμ. 8, 35-39). Μὲ τὴν ἐνανθρώπησή Του ὁ Θεὸς Λόγος ἔδειξε ὅτι ο Θεῖος Λόγος εἶναι ἡ οὐσία τῆς φύσης μας, τὸ θεμέλιο τοῦ ἀνθρώπινου εἶναι μας, ἡ βάση τῆς ἀνθρώπινης ζωῆς μας καὶ ὕπαρξης. Ἡ καταγωγή μας εἶναι ἀπὸ τὸ Θεό, γι αυτό καὶ τὸ εἶναι μας καὶ ἡ ζωή μας καὶ ἡ ὕπαρξή μας ἐξαρτῶνται ἐξ ὁλοκλήρου ἀπὸ τὸ Θεὸ (πρβλ. Πράξ. 17, 28. Κολ. 3, 1-4). Πράγματι, κατὰ τὸ ἀρχέτυπό της καὶ κατὰ τὴν ἐσώτατη οὐσία της, ὅλη ἡ κτίση εἶναι ἀπὸ τὸν Λόγο καὶ γιὰ τὸν Λόγο (Κολ. 1, 16-17). Σ Αὐτόν, δι Αὐτοῦ καὶ ἐν Αὐτῷ τὰ πάντα ἐπαναφέρονται στὴν ἔλλογη (logosni) καταγωγὴ καὶ ὕπαρξή τους στὴν ἀρχέγονη ἁγιότητα, στὸ κάλλος καὶ στὴ δύναμή τους σ ἐκεῖνο τὸ «γενηθήτω» καὶ «ἐγένετο» στὸ δικό τους παράδεισο. Διότι στὸ Λόγο βρίσκεται ὁ παράδεισος, ἐνῷ ἐκτὸς τῆς λογικότητας βρίσκεται ἡ κόλαση. [ ] Γιά ὅλα αὐτὰ ἡ ἡμέρα τῆς Γέννησης τοῦ Θεοῦ Λόγου «ἐν σαρκὶ» τὰ Χριστούγεννα εἶναι ἑορτὴ θαυμαστὴ καὶ γιὰ τὸ μεγαλεῖο της καὶ γιὰ τὸ μυστήριό της καὶ γιὰ τὸ νόημά της. Ἑορτάζοντας τὰ Χριστούγεννα, οὐσιαστικά ὁμολογοῦμε καὶ δοξάζουμε τὸ μοναδικὸ ἀληθινὸ νόημα καὶ τὸν λόγο τῆς ἀνθρώπινης ὕπαρξης, τοῦ ἀνθρώπινου
