1 MARCH/APRIL 2013 PUBLICATION DORMITION OF THE VIRGIN MARY GREEK ORTHODOX CHURCH 29 Central St., Somerville, MA, Tel.( 617) Fax (617) Web : office@dormitionchurch.org FLESH AND THE SPIRIT Beloved Brothers and Sisters in Christ, Every Christian has two births, the old and fleshly and the spiritual and new, and each is opposed to the other. «That which is born of the flesh is flesh, and that which is born of the spirit is spirit» (Jn. 3:6). Because they are opposed to each other, from this arises a conflict and a struggle between a Christian s flesh and spirit. The flesh desires to kill the spirit, and the spirit the flesh. The flesh desires to rule the spirit and the spirit the flesh. The flesh desires to be wrathful, to be proud, to quarrel and to be avenged in deed or in word, but the spirit desires to forgive everything in meekness. The flesh desires to be malicious, to flatter, to lie, to be crafty, to deceive and to be hypocritical, but the spirit hates this and desires to be truthful and straightforward in all dealings. As someone renewed, a Christian should live not according to the flesh but according to the spirit, and should subjugate the flesh to the spirit, according to the Apostle s words: «Walk in the Spirit and you shall not fulfill the lust of the flesh» (Gal. 5:16). This warfare, this saving struggle we are called to fight in order to become true Christians. Because, what use is it to be called Christians, yet not truly be Christians? Our Holy Church sets before us a period called Great Lent. During those few weeks we are called upon, to examine our relationship with the others and with God. We are also given the opportunity to break free from the slavery of our flesh. However there are some conditions to be met for such a release. The first condition is fasting. Fasting is the refusal to accept the wishes and needs of our fallen nature as normal, and try to get rid of the dictatorship of the flesh and matter over our spirit. The second condition is forgiveness. «If you forgive men their offenses, your Father in heaven will also forgive yours». We are called to forgive, ignoring the desperate impasses of human relations, and stacking them on the feet of Christ. Only then can we experience the peace of the Kingdom of God in this, our fallen world... HAVE A GREAT HOLY LENT! ΚΑΛΗ ΣΑΡΑΚΟΣΤΗ!

3 The Salutations Of The Theotokos Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, Holy Lent begins in a few weeks and the Church asks us to prepare ourselves accordingly in order to live the events that took place at the Passion of our Lord and welcome his Resurrection in a spirit of repentance. The Salutations of the Theotokos along with the Liturgies of the Presanctified Gifts and the Services of the Great Compline add to the spirituality of this period. History tells us that the Salutations of the Theotokos were initiated by the people of Constantinople as a way to thank the Virgin Mary for saving the city in 626AD from its attackers. The words therefore represent the feelings of joy regarding their salvation through the Theotokos. The word rejoice is repeated through out the hymn and the Theotokos is saluted a hundred and forty four times in all. The Salutations also refer to the joyful message of the Annunciation of the Theotokos for the birth of the Lord our Savior. The central character of the hymn is the Virgin Mary and in her holy person we perceive women as the source of life. In her we find both the virgin and the mother, as both of these periods of her life where sanctified. Therefore the Theotokos becomes a model of life whom we should aim to imitate. It is she who is glorified by all, the married and the celibate alike, as our helper and protector in our joys and sorrows. Every Friday during the Salutations, the priest chants thirty six times Rejoice to the Virgin Mary, while the people repeat Rejoice, oh unwedded bride. This creates a joyful atmosphere right before the Holy Week. As humans we rejoice because we are ridden of sin and the danger of eternal loss. We rejoice because we are allowed to taste in this life the fruits of the endless mercy of God. The Virgin Mary holds the central role in Divine Dispensation as she becomes the source of joy for all of us. This is why we cry out Rejoice, through whom is the joy to shine forth.rejoice, through whom is the curse to vanish. And this we do, because we are saved and freed from our sins and the tragic effects of the Fall. When the curse is lifted then comes joy. The Theotokos also represents the icon of the Church since it was through the Church that man was transformed and the world was renewed. Since she became the expression of the new Adam we cry out Rejoice, through whom is creation re-created. Finally the Theotokos also represents the ladder through which God descended to earth but also through which man ascended to the heavens. The focus of the Holy Scriptures lies on Jesus Christ and therefore the Theotokos remains in His shadow. Despite that, we can still describe her main virtues which are silence, humility, obedience to the word of God and faith in His Divine Dispensation. Because the Theotokos is the expression of human beauty, she became the mother of the Son of God and was therefore the means by which God came to the earth to save His people. Therefore it is this mother of the New Adam, of the new human race, whom we venerate during the Salutations. By venerating her we glorify God who selected her for the salvation of humanity. For all these reasons we should partake in the Salutations of the Virgin Mary, and we should not permit our spiritual lethargy to keep us away from the Church s Services. The more we are sanctified in this life the more comfortable we will feel in the other. AMEN FR. Konstantinos Manetas

4 PANAGIA AXION ESTIN In 980 an Elder and his disciple lived not far from Karyes, the capital and administrative center of Mount Athos, Greece. One Saturday night the Elder, leaving his disciple at the hermitage, left for the All-night Vigil in the Protaton, the main church in Karyes. Instructing his disciple to read the service by himself, the Elder left and the disciple began to read the service. As it grew dark, the disciple heard a knock at the door. Outside stood an unknown monk who said his name was Gabriel. The disciple invited the monk Gabriel in and offered him hospitality, as is customary on Mount Athos.The two then began to read Matins for Sunday. When they came to the ninth ode of the canon, they read the verse My soul doth magnify the Lord, and my spirit hath rejoiced in God my Saviour, after which they chanted More honorable than the Chrerubim, and beyond compare more glorious than the Seraphim, thee who without corruption gavest birth to God the Word, the very Theotokos, thee do we magnify. However, after the second verse, For He hath looked upon the lowliness of His handmaiden; for behold, from henceforth all generations shall call me blessed the stranger added the following words that the disciple had never heard before: It is truly meet to call thee blest, the Theotokos the ever-blessed and all immaculate and Mother of our God. While this hymn was being chanted, the Icon of the Theotokos shone with a heavenly light. After the monk finished chanting he turned to the disciple saying: We sing it like this at home. The disciple, struck by the simple beauty of the words and the heavenly singing, asked his visitor to write down the words so that he too could chant it. As there was neither ink nor paper, the mysterious stranger took a tile from the roof and miraculously wrote the words on the surface with his fingers, saying, Chant these words, and all the Orthodox faithful as well. The visitor then disappeared. The disciple, seeing and hearing all this, understood that his visitor was none other than Archangel Gabriel in the guise of a monk. The Icon of the Mother of God before which the hymn It is Truly Meet was first sung, was transferred to the Church of the Protaton, where an annual feast in honour of the Theotokos was established in commemoration of the miracle. The tile was also brought to the Church of the Protaton, after which the Athonites sent it to Constantinople, to the Ιmperial court and the Ecumenical Patriarchate, as evidence of the miracle. From then on, the hymn It is Truly Meet began to be chanted during the Divine Liturgy and other services in all Orthodox churches throughout the world. The place where the miracle occurred was later called Adein, which is the Greek word for to sing. The famous hymn It is Truly Meet is also chanted before every icon of the Theotokos. The original Axion Estin Icon is found in the Church of the Protaton, Karyes, Mount Athos, Greece. It is situated on the throne behind the Holy Table. There is a strict rule that forbids lay people from entering the altar of any church on Mount Athos. An exception is made to allow all pilgrims to enter the altar in order to venerate the holy Axion Estin Icon. In 1964, the monks of Mount Athos celebrated the 1000 th anniversary of the appearance of the Archangel Gabriel. This was the largest celebration ever to take place on Mount Athos, and was attended by representatives from throughout the Orthodox world. Of all the many spiritual treasures on the Holy Mountain, the Axion Estin Icon that the Archangel Gabriel himself sang the great hymn to her who is more honorable than the Cherubim and beyond compare more glorious than the Seraphim.

5 Παναγια Αξιον Εστιν Με τον όρο Άξιον Εστί αναφερόμαστε στην εικόνα της Παναγίας, της «εφέστιας προστάτιδας», του Αγίου Όρους. Η εικόνα της Παναγίας, το «Άξιον Εστί», είναι μια από τις περίφημες εικόνες του Αγίου Όρους. Βρίσκεται στο ναό του Πρωτάτου στις Καρυές του Αγίου Όρους, θεωρούμενη ως «κοινή εφέστιος προστάτις» εικόνα όλων των Αγιορείτικων Μονών, φέρουσα στο πλαίσιό της τις σφραγίδες και των 20 Μονών. Επί της εικόνας αυτής έγιναν κατά καιρούς πλείστα πιστά αντίγραφα ανά ένα εκ των οποίων βρίσκεται σε κάθε Μονή του Άθω. Εορτάζει με μεγάλη θρησκευτική λαμπρότητα τη Δευτέρα του Πάσχα και στις 11 Ιουνίου σε ανάμνηση του κάτωθεν θαύματος, αρχή της φήμης της εικόνας και ως θαυματουργής. Παλιά η εικόνα αυτή βρισκόταν σε ένα παντοκρατορινό κελί στην τοποθεσία τη λεγόμενη «κοιλάδα του Άδειν» κοντά και κάτω από τη σκήτη του Αγίου Ανδρέα. Την 11 Ιουνίου 980 ο γέροντας έλειπε από το κελί, καθώς είχε πάει σε μια αγρυπνία στις Καρυές, αφήνοντας μόνο τον υποτακτικό του. Ο υποτακτικός τη νύχτα έκανε κανονικά τον κανόνα του. Ακούει σε μια στιγμή να του χτυπάνε την πόρτα, ανοίγει και βλέπει έναν περαστικό να του ζητάει να τον φιλοξενήσει, πράγμα που γίνεται. Συνεχίζει ο μοναχός τον κανόνα του μέχρι που φτάνει στην 9η ωδή «Την τιμιωτέρα των Χερουβείμ...». Τότε τον διακόπτει ο φιλοξενούμενος και του λέει: «Όχι, πρώτα θα πεις: Άξιον Εστί ως αληθώς...» ως συμπλήρωμα του υπό του Κοσμά Μαϊουμά Μεγαλυνάριου της Θεοτόκου. Ο μοναχός ενθουσιασμένος ζητάει να του γράψει ο νέος τον ύμνο. Όταν άκουσε αυτό ο υποτακτικός ενθουσιάστηκε αφ' ενός για το νέο ύμνο, αφετέρου για την κατά κάποιο τρόπο Αγγελοειδή φωνή και ουράνιο μελωδία που άκουσε και λέει προς τον ξένο μοναχό: «Εμείς μόνο την Τιμιωτέρα ψάλλουμε, το Άξιον Εστίν, δεν το έχουμε ακούσει ποτέ, ούτε εμείς αλλά ούτε και οι πρωτύτεροι από μας. Αλλά σε παρακαλώ, κάνε αγάπη και γράψε σε μένα τον ύμνο αυτό για να τον ψάλλω και γώ στην Θεοτόκο». «Φέρε μου μελάνι και χαρτί για να γράψω τον ύμνο», του είπε ο ξένος μοναχός. «Δεν έχω ούτε μελάνι, ούτε χαρτί», είπε ο υποτακτικός. Τότε ο ξένος μοναχός είπε: «Φέρε μου μια πλάκα». Ο υποτακτικός πήγε τότε και έφερε (μάλιστα λέγεται ότι η πλάκα αυτή ήταν από το δάπεδο του ναού κάτι που είναι πολύ πιθανόν). Την πήρε λοιπόν ο ξένος, και έγραψε πάνω σ' αυτήν με το δάκτυλο του τον παραπάνω ύμνο, το Άξιον Εστίν. Κι ώ του θαύματος!!! Τα γράμματα χαράχθηκαν τόσο βαθιά πάνω στην σκληρή πλάκα σαν να γράφτηκαν σε μαλακό πηλό. Και ποιος να περιγράψει την έκπληξη του υποτακτικού που βρέθηκε μπροστά σ' αυτό το εξαίσιο γεγονός, ο οποίος δίκαια στάθηκε εμβρόντητος και παράλαβε την πλάκα από τον ξένο. Μετά είπε ο ξένος στον υποτακτικό: «Από σήμερα και στο εξής έτσι να ψάλλετε αυτό τον ύμνο και εσείς, αλλά και όλοι οι Ορθόδοξοι στην Κυρία ημών Θεοτόκο». Και μετά εξαφανίστηκε. Ήταν ο Αρχάγγελος Γαβριήλ, απεσταλμένος από το Θεό, για να αποκαλύψει τον αγγελικό αυτό ύμνο στην ανθρωπότητα. Ο υποτακτικός μοναχός δοκιμάζοντας έκπληξη στην έκπληξη και χαρά στην χαρά, προσκύνησε τον τόπο όπου στάθηκε ο Άγγελος και ξεφώνησε: «Νυν είδα αληθώς ότι εξαπέστειλε Κύριος τον Άγγελο Αυτού» και ατενίζοντας την εικόνα της Θεοτόκου «Δεδοξασμένα ελαλήθη περί σού η πόλις του Θεού, Δέσποινα μου Μαρία». Όταν επέστρεψε ο γέροντας του είπε ο υποτακτικός τα γεγονότα και αφού ενημερώθηκε η Ιερά Κοινότητα μεταφέρθηκε η εικόνα στο Πρωτάτο, όπου και συνεχίζει να θαυματουργεί μέχρι σήμερα, ενώ και το κελί που τιμήθηκε από την Αρχαγγελική επίσκεψη φέρει επίσης το όνομα «Άξιον εστί». Έτσι, το Μεγαλυνάριο αυτό της Θεοτόκου που συνέθεσε ο Κοσμάς (Επίσκοπος Μαϊουμά) σήμερα ονομάζεται «Άξιον Εστί», εκ των δύο πρώτων λέξεων του Θεομητορικού αυτού Ύμνου και ψάλλεται σε κάθε Θεία Λειτουργία.

6 Αγαπητοί εν Χριστώ αδελφοί, ΟΙ ΧΑΙΡΕΤΙΣΜΟΙ ΤΗΣ ΘΕΟΤΟΚΟΥ Σε λίγο θα αρχίση η περίοδος της Μεγάλης Σαρακοστής κατά την οποία, η Εκκλησία μας ζητάει να προετοιμασθούμε κατάλληλα γιά να βιώσουμε πιό έντονα τα γεγονότα του Πάθους του Κυρίου και να υποδεχθούμε την Ανάσταση του μέσα σε κλίμα μετάνοιας. Οι Χαιρετισμοί της Θεοτόκου, μαζί με τις Λειτουργίες των Προηγιασμένων δώρων και τις Ακολουθίες του Μεγάλου Αποδείπνου, προσδίδουν έναν αγιαστικό και πνευματικό χαρακτήρα σ αυτήν την κατανυκτική περίοδο. Γνωρίζουμε από την ιστορία ότι οι ακολουθίες των Χαιρετισμών καθιερώθηκαν ως έκφραση ευχαριστιών και ευγνωμοσύνης του Βυζαντινού λαού γιά την διάσωση της Κωνσταντινουπόλεως από την πολιορκία των βαρβάρων το έτος 626 μχ. Εξέφραζαν λοιπόν το βίωμα και την εμπειρία της χαράς γιά την σωτηρία του λαού μέσω της Υπεραγίας Θεοτόκου. Η λέξη χαρά επαναλαμβάνεται συνεχώς μέσα σε όλο τον ύμνο. Μόνον η κλασσική προσφώνηση «χαίρε» καταγράφεται εκατόν σαράντα τέσσερις φορές και προτάσσεται σε κάθε στίχο. Οι Χαιρετισμοί πήραν λοιπόν το όνομα από το χαίρε που προτάσσεται στους ύμνους, και αναφέρονται στο χαρμόσυνο μήνυμα του Ευαγγελισμού της Θεοτόκου γιά την Γέννηση του Κυρίου και Σωτήρα μας. Κεντρικό πρόσωπο των ύμνων είναι η Παναγία Παρθένος. Στο άγιο πρόσωπό της εξυψώνεται η γυναίκα ως πηγή της ζωής. Πάνω της διακρίνουμε την γυναίκα παρθένο και την γυναίκα μητέρα. Και οι δύο μορφές ζωής καθαγιάστηκαν στο πρόσωπό της. Ετσι η Θεοτόκος γίνεται γιά μας τύπος ζωής και εικόνα μίμησης. Αυτή υμνολογείται και χαιρετίζεται από όλους, εγγάμους και μοναχούς, ως βοηθός και προστάτης στις χαρές και τις θλίψεις μας. Κατά την πρώτη ακόμη ημέρα των Χαιρετισμών, και στους πρώτους έξη Οίκους του Υμνου, ο ιερέας θα απευθύνει τριανταέξη φορές το «Χαίρε» προς την Παρθένο και ο λαός θα επαναλαμβάνη το «Χαίρε νύμφη ανύμφευτε». Ετσι δημιουργείται μιά πλήρης χαρμόσυνη ατμόσφαιρα εν όψει της Εβδομάδος των Παθών. Οι άνθρωποι χαιρόμαστε διότι απαλασσόμαστε από την απειλή και τον κίνδυνο της αμαρτίας και της αιώνιας απώλειας. Χαιρόμαστε γιατί ζούμε από τώρα τους καρπούς του ελέους και της χάριτος του Θεού. Στο λυτρωτικό και σωτηριολογικό σχέδιο της Θείας Οικονομίας η Παναγία παίζει ένα κεντρικό ρόλο. Εκείνη γίνεται η αιτία και η πηγή της χαράς όλων μας. Γι αυτό και εμείς αναφωνούμε: «Χαίρε δι ης η χαρά εκλάμψει, χαίρε δι ης η αρά εκλείψει». Και τούτο, διότι με την γέννηση του Υιού της αίρονται και εξαλείφονται οι τραγικές συνέπειες της πτώσης των ανθρώπων. Οταν αίρεται η «αρά», η κατάρα, τότε έρχεται η χαρά. Η Παναγία είναι ακόμα η εικόνα της Εκκλησίας εφ όσον μέσα στην Εκκλησία έγινε η μεταμόρφωση του ανθρώπου και η ανακαίνιση του κόσμου. Επειδή λοιπόν αυτή έγινε έκφρασις της παρουσίας του νέου Αδάμ γι αυτό και εμείς αναφωνούμε «Χαίρε δι ης νεουργείται η κτίσις». Ακόμη έγινε η κλίμακα από την οποία κατέβηκε ο Θεός στη γη αλλά και η γέφυρα από την οποία ανέβηκε ο άνθρωπος στον ουρανό. Στα ιερά κείμενα κεντρικό πρόσωπο είναι ο Ιησούς Χριστός. Η Παναγία παραμένει πάντα στην σκιά του Υιού της. Παρόλα αυτά είναι δυνατό να περιγράψουμε τα βασικά χαρακτηριστικά της προσωπικότητάς της που είναι η σιωπή και η ταπεινοφροσύνη της. Ακόμη είναι η υπακοή της στο θέλημα του Θεού και η πιστή διακονία της στο σχέδιο της Θείας Οικονομίας. Η Παναγία επειδή είναι έκφραση του ανθρώπινου κάλλους έγινε μητέρα του Υιού του Θεού και κατέβασε τον Θεό από τον ουρανό γιά χάριν των ανθρώπων. Αυτή την Μητέρα του νέου Αδάμ, του ανθρώπινου γένους, τιμούμε κατά τις Ακολουθίες των Χαιρετισμών, και τιμώντας αυτήν αποδίδουμε δόξα στον Θεό που την επέλεξε για τη σωτηρία των ανθρώπων. Γι αυτό πρέπει όλοι να προσερχόμαστε στους Χαιρετισμούς συμμετέχοντας σ αυτήν την Δοξολογία των Ανω, και να μην αφήνουμε την πνευματική ραθυμία να μας κρατάει μακριά από τον Ιερό Ναό. Οσο πιό πολύ αγιαζόμαστε σ αυτήν τη ζωή, τοσο πιό άνετα θα περάσουμε στην άλλη. ΑΜΗΝ Π. ΚΜ

7 A NOTE FROM OUR PARISH COUNCIL PRESIDENT My dearest parishioners Ιt is a great honor privilege and a great responsibility to be the President of this historic community of our beloved Dormition of the Virgin Mary Church. The times are very challenging both spiritually and financially and I promise you that I will work very hard, like all my predecessors, for the betterment of our church and community. I look forward to working together with our Priest and every person and organization of our community. Greek emigrants in Somerville established the Hellenic Association in 1916 and the first Greek Church opened its doors in August in Union Square. These early Greeks wanted to maintain their traditions, culture, language, education and to pray and worship God. Ninety seven years later and after two building relocations we are ready to start celebrating our Church s 100 th Anniversary. The 100 th Anniversary committee and her chairperson Mrs. Evelyn Galatis have started working on the first plans. This is a milestone for our community. Our parish continues, after almost a century, to believe in the same principles and goals. Panagia has been guiding us for almost a century and I believe will continue to guide us for generations to come. I encourage all of us to work together with the committee in order to successfully celebrate the 100 th anniversary of our Dormition Church. In the next several months we will have many events at our church by the Parish Council and other Church Organizations. I hope that we all can work together and support every organization in these important events. Upcoming events organized by the Parish Council include a Greek Evening with renowned singer Katerina Topazi on Saturday, March 16, the Bakaliaro dinner on Sunday, March 24, Palm Sunday Fish Dinner on Sunday, April 28, Team Trivia Night on Friday, May 16, and Gyro Day on Saturday May 18 th. I hope that most of you will be able to join us on these days to have fun and to support our church. Most of this money is going to fund this year s repairs and renovations. Thank you Father for your vision, leadership and guidance. You make a difference in our lives. I would like to thank two outgoing members of the Parish Council, Charlie Loridas and Eleni Raschi. Thank you Charlie for your hard work during the last few decades! We wish you a speedy recovery from your operation. Thank you Eleni for all you have done and continue to do for the Parish Council and several other organizations in the last few years. I would like to welcome three new parish council members, Guy Bressette, Andy Galbadis and Carol Salvo. I would also like to thank the outgoing President, Ted Menounos, and the outgoing First Vice- President, Nick Boulas for their hard work and support and their devotion and commitment to our church. 8 A NOTE FROM OUR PTO PARENT TEACHER ORGANIZATION Dear Dormition Families and Friends: The month of February, 2013 marked the first year anniversary of Father Konstantino's pastoral assignment by His Eminence Metropolitan Methodios to our beloved parish. We are truly blessed to have Father Konstantinos, Presbytera Anna and Eleni as part of our family. We wish them all the best in their second year and beyond with us. May God bless them and keep all of us strong as a family growing closer in Christ. We would like to thank Father for bringing to the PTO's attention the fact that the Hellenic Nursing Home's gold chalice in Canton, MA was in a state of disrepair. The PTO Committee voted and pledged to pay for the repair of their chalice which is used to administer Holy Communion to our Orthodox Seniors. Now our Seniors can continue to approach with fear, faith and love to receive the body and blood of Christ uninterrupted in their newly repaired chalice. the annual Bakaliaro Dinner to listen to our Greek school children recite their Greek Independence Day poems and songs. We wish everyone a Happy Greek Independence Day. This year marks the 192nd year of Independence. "An hour's time of living free, is better than forty years of prison and slavery" a translation of Rigas Feraios's poem called Thourios which inspired many in Greece and in the Balkans to revolt against the Ottoman Turks. Long live Greece and long live freedom. On April 28, 2013, the Saturday of Lazarus, our children and parishioners are invited to attend the pot luck lunch after liturgy. This lunch is free to all parishioners. We hope that you will please bring a Lenten dish or two for everyone to enjoy. Our children will learn and assist with the making of our palm crosses. There will be educational activities planned to teach our children about lent and Easter by Father, Mrs. Eleni Raschi, Mrs. Georgia Ververis and Mrs. Tina Armand. We are fortunate and blessed to have these caring and accomplished educators who assist us annually with this program. Unfortunately, due to the low number of responses from our families we had to postpone the weekend trip in February to the Metropolis Retreat House in New Hampshire. We will attempt to re-schedule this event in the future. We hope that more families and parishioners will commit to visit our newly renovated camp. During these next few months the PTO Committee has planned several activities for our youth. On Saturday, March 9, 2013 at 4:00 p.m. we will hold our annual bowling night at Ryan's Family Amusements located at 11 Charles Street, Malden, MA. We invite you to attend this evening of fun which only costs $10.00 per person. The price includes 2 strings of bowling, shoes, dinner and free parking. We recognize and thank Mrs. Helen Boulas for her contributions and assistance in organizing this event. We will hold one of our major fundraisers, the PTO Bake Sale on Sunday, March 17, We hope that you will continue to support this annual event as it is a major source of revenue for our ministry. Past proceeds from this event were used to purchase many of the audio visual equipment for our children's classrooms. Once again we need to raise funds to replace some of these missing items and to equip the third classroom with the same electronic equipment which are available for use not only by our children but for all parish ministries. All classrooms are equipped with free Wi-Fi compliments of the parish council. We welcome any monetary donations and/or donated bake item(s) for sale at our event. Lenten items are preferred since lent begins on Monday, March 18, Professor Kakava, Mrs. Elizabeth, Ms. Anna and Ms. Nicoletta have another wonderful Greek school program to share with us. On Sunday, March 24, 2013, please attend This year we are pleased to announce that Ms. Stella Saih of Byzantino, which is located at 355 Cambridge Street, Cambridge, MA, has offered to donate a portion of the proceeds from the sale of her beautiful Easter candles purchased by our Dormition families from her store to the PTO general account. Please call Mrs. Saih early at or her at stellasaih@comcast.net to place your orders for your child(ren), god-child(ren) and/or grand-child (ren). Be certain to mention when placing your order that you are a Dormition parishioner so that the PTO will receive some credit for your purchase(s). Lastly, on Easter Sunday, May 5, 2013, after the agape service, we will hold our annual Easter Egg Hunt which is organized and sponsored by Mr. and Mrs. Nick Sfikas. 9 Συλλογος Γονεων και Διδασκαλων Αγαπητές οικογένειες και φίλοι της Κοίμησης, O μήνας Φεβρουάριος του 2013 σηματοδοτεί την πρώτη επέτειο της ποιμαντικής τοποθέτησης τού πατέρα Κωνσταντίνου από το Σεβασμιώτατο Μητροπολίτη Μεθοδίο στην αγαπημένη ενορία μας. Είμαστε πραγματικά ευλογημένοι να έχουμε τον πατέρα Κωνσταντίνο, την Πρεσβυτέρα Άννα και την Ελένη ως μέρος της οικογένειάς μας. Τους ευχόμαστε ότι το καλύτερο κατά το δεύτερο έτος της παρουσίας τους μαζί μας. Είθε ο Θεός να τους ευλογεί και να μας κρατήσει όλους ενωμένους, σαν μια ισχυρή οικογένεια που αναπτύσεται πιο κοντά στον Χριστό. Θα θέλαμε να ευχαριστήσουμε τον Πατέρα που ενημέρωσε το PTO για το γεγονός ότι το χρυσό δισκοπότηρο του Ελληνικού Γηροκομείου στο Canton, MA, ήταν σε κατεστραμένο. Η Επιτροπή PTO ψήφισε και υποσχέθηκε να πληρώσει για την επισκευή του δισκοπότηρου τους, το οποίο χρησιμοποιείται για να μεταλαμβάνουν οί Ορθόδοξοι ηλικιωμένοι μας. Τώρα αυτοι μπορούν να συνεχίσουν αδιάκοπα να προσεγγίζούν μέ φόβο, πίστη και αγάπη για να λάβουν το σώμα και το αίμα του Χριστού στο πρόσφατα επισκευασμένο δισκοπότηρο τούς. Δυστυχώς, λόγω του μικρού αριθμού ενδιαφερομένων οικογενειών, έπρεπε να αναβάλουμε το Σαββατοκυριακάτικο ταξίδι του Φεβρουαρίου στην Κατασκήνωση της Μητρόπολης στο New Hampshire. Θα προσπαθήσουμε να προγραμματίσουμε αυτό το γεγονός στο μέλλον. Ελπίζουμε ότι περισσότερες οικογένειες και ενορίτες θα δεσμευτούν να επισκεφθούν το πρόσφατα ανακαινισμένο κέντρο. Η Επιτροπή του PTO έχει προγραμματίσει διάφορες δραστηριότητες για τους νέους μας κατά τη διάρκεια των επόμενων μηνών. Το Σάββατο, 9 Μαρτίου 2013 στις 4:00 μ.μ. θα πραγματοποιήσουμε την ετήσια βραδιά μπόουλινγκ στο Ryan's Family Amusements πού βρίσκεται στο 11 Charles Street, στό Malden, MA. Σας καλούμε να συμμετέχετε σ αυτή τη διασκεδαστική βραδυά που κοστίζει μόνο $10 τό άτομο. Η τιμή περιλαμβάνει 2 γραμμές μπόουλινγκ, παπούτσια, δείπνο και δωρεάν χώρο στάθμευσης. Θέλουμε να αναγνωρίσουμε και να ευχαριστήσουμε την κα Ελένη Μπούλα για τη συμβολή και τη βοήθειά της στη διοργάνωση αυτής της εκδήλωσης. Τήν Κυριακή 17 Μαρτίου 2013 θά έχομε ένα από τούς πιο σημαντικούς εράνους μας, την πώληση γλυκών και αρτοσκευασμάτων. Ελπίζουμε ότι θα συνεχίσετε να στηρίζετε αυτή την ετήσια εκδήλωση, καθώς είναι μια σημαντική πηγή εσόδων για τήν διακονία μας. Τα έσοδα από αυτή την εκδήλωση χρησιμοποιήθηκαν στό παρελθόν για να αγοράσουμε ορισμένο από τον οπτικοακουστικο εξοπλισμό για τις αίθουσες διδασκαλίας των παιδιών μας. Για άλλη μια φορά θα πρέπει να συγκεντρώσουμε κεφάλαια για να αντικαταστήσουμε μερικά από αυτά τα όργανα που λείπουν και επίσης να εξοπλίσουμε την τρίτη τάξη με τόν ίδιο ηλεκτρονικό εξοπλισμό που είναι διαθέσιμος για χρήση όχι μόνο από τα παιδιά μας, αλλά και από όλες τις διακονιες της ενορίας μας. Όλες οι αίθουσες είναι εξοπλισμένες με ελεύθερα προσβάσιμο Wi-Fi, προσφορά της ενορίας μας. Δεχομαστε οποιεσδήποτε χρηματικές, καθώς και υλικές δωρεές προς πώληση στην εκδήλωση μας. Προτιμώνται τα νηστήσιμα γλυκά και αρτοσκευάσματα μια και η Σαρακοστή αρχίζει την Δευτέρα, 18 Μαρτίου Η Καθηγήτρια κα Κακαβά, η κα Ελισάβετ, οι Δεσποινίδες Άννα και Νικολέττα έχουν άλλο ένα υπέροχο ελληνικό πρόγραμμα για να μοιραστούν μαζί μας την Κυριακή 24, Μαρτίου Παρακαλούμε να παραβρεθήτε στο ετήσιο γεύμα μπακαλιάρου, να ακούσετε τους μαθητές του Ελληνικού Σχολείου μας να απαγγέλλουν ποιήματα και τραγούδια γιά τήν Ημέρα της Ελληνικής Ανεξαρτησίας. Ευχόμαστε σε όλους χαρούμενη Ημέρα της Ελληνικής Ανεξαρτησίας. Αυτή η χρονιά σηματοδοτεί το 192ο έτος της Ελληνικής Ανεξαρτησίας. Το "καλύτερα μιάς ώρας ελεύθερη ζωή παρά σαράντα χρόνια σκλαβιάς και φυλακή" είναι ένα κομμάτι απο τόν Θούριο τού Ρήγα Φεραίου που ενέπνευσε πολλούς στην Ελλάδα και στα Βαλκάνια να επαναστατήσουν εναντίον των Τούρκων. Ζήτω η Ελλάδα και Ζήτω η Ελευθερία. Το Σάββατο του Λαζάρου στις 28 Απρίλου 2013, τα παιδιά και οι ενορίτες μας, καλούνται να συμμετάσχουν στο γεύμα με ότι βρεθεί μετά την Θεία Λειτουργία. Αυτό το γεύμα είναι δωρεάν για όλους τους ενορίτες. Σας παρακαλούμε να φέρετε ένα η δύο νηστίσιμα φαγητά για να τα απολαύσουν όλοι. Τα παιδιά μας θα μάθουν και θα βοηθήσουν με την κατασκευή των σταυρών με φύλλα φοινικιάς. Θα υπάρξουν εκπαιδευτικές δραστηριότητες που σχεδιάζονται για να διδάξουν τα παιδιά μας για την Σαρακοστή και το Πάσχα από τον Πατέρα Κωνσταντινο, την κα Ελένη Raschi, την κα Γεωργία Βερβέρη και την κα Τίνα Armand. 10 On January 27, 2013 the Parish Council named Evelyn Galatis as Chair of the 100 th Anniversary effort for our Church. Here are excerpts from her speech. I d like to say thank you to the Parish Council for their confidence and support. I am very honored and excited to be a part of this historic effort. I said yes for 2 reasons - to honor my parents and grandparents who left this legacy for me. And for my children - to leave a legacy for them that will continue into the future. We have worked hard. We have done a good job. This is something we should be proud of. As Somerville has grown, it has given birth to many other parishes. Our children have grown, married, and begun more Churches in Arlington, Lexington, Woburn, Andover, and beyond. This Church defines us all We are Greek Orthodox. This is an historic Church and we belong to it. Let us be witnesses to what our ancestors have done and what we continue to do. Do you want to be a part of history in the making? Do you want to bring our Church from the first 100 years into the 2 nd century? This is the time, like never before, to step forward. Join us. Volunteer your expertise, experience, ideas, enthusiasm, and love this is filotimo. Join us. Be a part of making our Church s history by helping with this 100 th Anniversary effort. Do it for your great grandparents, your grandparents, your parents, your children, and most importantly, you. Join us! We are looking for people with ideas, connections, workers, and helpers. Make a difference in our Church. Be a part of this historic effort. We are strong. We ve seen what our ancestors have accomplished. To honor them we must continue. 11 Στις 27 Ιανουαρίου του 2013 το Ενοριακό Συμβούλιο ανέθεσε στην Evelyn Γαλάτης την Προεδρία της Επιτροπής της Εκατοστής Επετείου. Παραθέτουμε μερικά αποσπάσματα από την ομιλία της. Θα ήθελα να ευχαριστήσω το Συμβούλιο για την εμπιστοσύνη του και την υποστήριξή του. Είναι μεγάλη μου τιμή και ειμαι πολυ ενθουσιασμένη που λαμβάνω μέρος σε αυτήν την ιστορική προσπάθεια. Δεχθηκα για δύο λόγους - για να τιμήσω τους γονείς και τους παππούδες μου που άφησαν αυτή την κληρονομιά σε μένα. Και για τα παιδιά μου για να αφήσω μια κληρονομιά σ αυτούς που θα συνεχιστεί και στο μέλλον. Καθώς μεγαλωσε το Somerville έδωσε έμψυχο υλικό γιά να δημιουργηθουν πολλές άλλες ενορίες. Έχουμε εργαστεί σκληρά. Έχουμε κάνει καλή δουλειά με τα παιδια μας. Αυτό είναι κάτι γιά το οποίο πρέπει να είμαστε υπερήφανοι. Τα παιδιά μας μεγάλωσαν, παντρεύθηκαν, και βοήθησαν να ανοίξουν και άλλες Εκκλησίες στο Arlington, Lexington, Woburn, Andover, και αλλού. Αυτή η Εκκλησία μας χαρακτηρίζει όλους - «Είμαστε Έλληνες Ορθόδοξοι. Ανήκουμε σε μια ιστορική Εκκλησία». Ας γίνουμε κήρυκες των όσων έκαμαν οι πρόγονοί μας, και που θα συνεχίσουμε να κάνουμε κι εμείς. Θέλετε να συμετέχετε στην ιστορία που γράφεται τώρα; Θέλετε να φέρετε την Εκκλησία μας από τα πρώτα 100 χρόνια της στον δεύτερο αιώνα της ζωής της; Αυτή είναι μιά μοναδικη στιγμή για να προχωρήσουμε μπροστά. Ενωθήτε μαζί μας. Προσφέρτε εθελοντικά τις γνώσεις, την εμπειρία, τις ιδέες, τον ενθουσιασμό και την αγάπη σας. Αυτό θα πει «φιλότιμο». Ενωθήτε μαζί μας. Γίνετε συντελεστές της δημιουργίας της ιστορίας της Εκκλησίας μας, βοηθώντας στην προσπάθεια της 100 ης επετείου. Ενωθητε μαζί μας. Κάντε το για τους προ παππούδες και τις προ-γιαγιάδες, τους παππούδες και τις γιαγιάδες, τους γονείς, τα παιδιά σας, και το πιο σημαντικα, για σας. Ενωθήτε μαζί μας.. Ψάχνουμε για ανθρώπους με ιδέες και γνωριμίες, που θα εργασθούν και θα βοηθήσουν. Ενωθήτε μαζί μας. Κάντε τη διαφορά στην Εκκλησία μας. Γινετε μέρος αυτής της ιστορικής προσπάθειας. Ελάτε μαζί μας. Είμαστε δυνατοί. Είδαμε τι κατάφεραν οι πρόγονοί μας. Για να τους τιμήσουμε πρέπει να συνεχίσουμε. Αυτή είναι η αρχή μιας συναρπαστικής εποχής για όλους μας. Ελάτε μαζί μας. Χρειαζόμαστε τη οποιαδήποτε βοήθειά σας και με οποιοδήποτε τρόπο. Ο πρώτος τρόπος είναι σήμερα, αυτή τη στιγμή. Σας ζητάμε να μας δώσετε πληροφορίες για το πώς να επικοινωνήσουμε μαζί σας. Παρακαλούμε συμπληρώστε τα στην είσοδο. Ελάτε μαζί μας. Οι συναντήσεις μας για τους επόμενους 2 μήνες θα πραγματοποιηθούν μετά την Εκκλησία, την Κυριακή 17 Μαρτίου και την Τρίτη 16 Απριλίου. 12 ΚΑΙ ΣΤΑ ΕΛΛΗΝΙΚΑ... Πολυαγαπημενοι μου ενορίτες Αποτελεί πολυ μεγαλη τιμή, προνόμιο και ευθύνη να είμαι ο Προέδρος της ιστορικής αυτής κοινότητας της αγαπημένης μας Κοιμήσεως της Θεοτοκου. Οι σημερινές εποχές είναι πολύ δύσκολες τόσο πνευματικά και οικονομικά και σας υπόσχομαι ότι θα εργαστώ πολύ σκληρά, όπως και όλοι οι προκάτοχοι μου, για τη βελτίωση της εκκλησίας και της κοινότητας μας. Προσβλέπω σε μια καλή συνεργασία με τον Ιερέα μας, καθε οργάνωση και κάθε μέλοςτης κοινότητας μας. Οι Έλληνες μετανάστες στο Somerville ίδρυσαν το 1916 την Ένωση Ελλήνων και η πρώτη ελληνική εκκλησία άνοιξε τις πόρτες της τον Αύγουστο στο Union Square. Οι πρώτοι εκείνοι Έλληνες ήθελαν να διατηρήσουν τις παραδόσεις τους, τον πολιτισμό, τη γλώσσα, την εκπαίδευση και να προσευχηθούν και να προσκυνήσουν τον Θεό. Ενενήντα επτά χρόνια αργότερα και μετά από δύο μετεγκαταστάσεις κτιρίων είμαστε έτοιμοι για να ξεκινήσουμε τον εορτασμό της 100 ης Επετειου της Εκκλησίας μας. Η Επιτροπή της 100ής Επετείου και η πρόεδρός της κ. Evelyn Γαλάτης έχουν αρχίσει να εργάζονται πάνω στα πρώτα σχέδια. Αυτό είναι ένα ορόσημο για την κοινότητά μας. Η Ενορία μας συνεχίζει, μετά από περίπου έναν αιώνα, να έχη τις ίδιες αρχές και στόχους. Η Παναγία μας έχει καθοδηγήσει για σχεδόν εκατό χρόνια και πιστεύω ότι θα συνεχίσει να μας καθοδηγή και στις επόμενες γενιές. Προτρέπω όλους μας να συνεργαστούμε με την Επιτροπή, προκειμένου να γιορτάσουμε με επιτυχία την 100η επέτειο της Εκκλησίας μας της Κοιμήσεως της Θεοτόκου. Κατά τους επόμενους μήνες θα έχουμε πολλές εκδηλώσεις στην εκκλησία μας από το Ενοριακό Συμβούλιο και άλλες εκκλησιαστικές οργανώσεις. Ελπίζω ότι όλοι μπορούμε να συνεργαστούμε και να στηρίξουμε κάθε οργάνωση σε αυτές τίς σημαντικές εκδηλώσεις. Προσεχείς εκδηλώσεις που διοργανώνονται από την Ενοριακό Συμβούλιο περιλαμβάνουν μια Ελληνική Βραδιά με τη γνωστή τραγουδίστρια Κατερίνα Τοπάζη για το Σάββατο, 16 Μαρτίου, το δείπνο Μπακαλιάρου την Κυριακή, 24 Μάρτη, δείπνο Ψαριων την Κυριακή, 28 Απριλίου, βραδυα ομάδας ασημαντων ερωτήσεων την Παρασκευή, 16 Μαΐου, και την ημέρα Γύρου, το Σάββατο 18 Μαΐου. Ελπίζω ότι οι περισσότεροι από εσάς θα είναι σε θέση να έλθουν αυτές τις μέρες για να διασκεδάσουν και να υποστηρίξουν την εκκλησία μας. Αυτά τα χρήματα πρόκειται να χρηματοδοτήσουν τις επισκευές και ανακαινίσεις του τρέχοντος έτους. Σας ευχαριστούμε Πάτερ για το όραμα σας, την ηγεσία και την καθοδήγησή σας. Κάνετε τη διαφορά στη ζωή μας. Θα ήθελα να ευχαριστήσω τα δύο απερχόμενα μέλη του Ενοριακού Συμβουλίου, τον Κώστα Λωρίδα και την Ελένη Raschi. Σε ευχαριστούμε Κώστα για τη σκληρή δουλειά σου κατά τη διάρκεια των τελευταίων δεκαετιών! Σου ευχόμαστε ταχεία ανάρρωση από τη εγχείρηση σου. Σε ευχαριστούμε Ελένη για όλα όσα έχεις κάνει τα τελευταία χρόνια και θα συνεχίσεις να κάνεις για το Ενοριακό Συμβούλιο και διάφορους άλλους οργανισμούς. Επίσης επιθυμώ να καλωσορίσω τρία νέα μέλη του Ενοριακού Συμβουλίου, τον Guy Bressette, τον Ανδρέα Γαλβάντη και την Κυριακή Σαλβο. Επίσης θα ήθελα να ευχαριστήσω τον απερχόμενο πρόεδρο, Θεόδωρο Μενούνο, καθώς και στον απερχόμενο Πρώτο Αντιπρόεδρο, Νίκο Μπούλα για τη σκληρή δουλειά, την υποστήριξή τους, την αφοσίωσή τους και τη δέσμευσή τους στην Εκκλησία. 19 GOYA A Youth Ministry of our Parish Dear Parishioners, I hope everyone is having a fun, safe, and snowy winter. In the past couple months GOYA has been very busy. We hosted coffee hour on January 20 th, Thank you to everyone who made a donation; it truly warms my heart to see everyone support us so generously. Also during January we cleaned out the boiler room along with the parish council directing us. It was a major success; we got rid of items that haven t been used for ages! Thank you to Phil Dres for donating coffee and bagels and Taso Dres for the water, pizza, and salad for everyone to munch on. Rewarding ourselves for all our hard work on that day, we took a trip to Plaster Fun time located in Reading, Massachusetts. There we painted different ceramic pieces and turned out to be lots of fun! Our next major event for the year is the 30 Hour Famine that we will be hosting on April 5 th and 6 th Like every other year, GOYA raises money for starving children around the world then sends it to the country that needs it the most. We will be collecting the money on April 5 th when we do our annual lock in and sleep over the church. If you would like to raise money and participate with GOYA you are more than welcome to do so! Our last major and most important event of the year is our annual Mother s Day Luncheon. We will be hosting it on May 12 th You will definitely miss out if you don t go! Can t wait to see everyone! Κάναμε ένα ταξίδι στο Plaster Fun time που βρίσκεται στο Ρέντινγκ της Μασαχουσέτης, επιβραβεύοντας έτσι τους εαυτούς μας για τη σκληρή δουλειά μας εκείνη την ημέρα, Εκεί είδαμε ζωγράφισμενα διάφορα κεραμικά κομμάτια και είχαμε πολλή διασκέδαση! Η επόμενη μεγάλη εκδήλωση μας είναι οι 30 ώρες πείνας που θα πραγματοποιηθή στις 5 και 6, Απριλίου Όπως κάθε άλλη χρονιά, η GOYA συγκεντρώνει χρήματα για τα παιδιά όλου του κόσμου που πεθαίνουν από την πείνα καί τα στέλνει στη χώρα που τα χρειάζεται περισσότερο. Θα συλλέξουμε χρήματα στις 5 Απριλίου, όπως κάνουμε καθε χρονο όταν μαζευόμαστε κλειδωνόμαστε και κοιμόμαστε πάνω από την εκκλησία. 22 A NOTE FROM CHOIR Α Liturgical Music Ministry of our Parish As we continue on through the Liturgical year, I am working to introduce more chants into our music for the Divine Liturgy. As we travel through the second half of the Liturgical year you will hear a different Trisagion Hymn, some different responses throughout, and perhaps even a new Cherubic Hymn for Pascha. You might wonder how exactly I find music for the Liturgy. There are several sources. I look through numerous liturgies arranged by several Greek Orthodox composers from different parts of the country, and also peruse a couple of websites devoted to this exact subject. The tricky part is being sure that the music chosen flows seamlessly throughout the Liturgy without drawing undue attention to itself. The music needs to enhance the Liturgy and reflect the particular sentiment of the current Liturgical season. The big test of whether or not particular music is the right choice is during the Liturgy it self in context, as I m working with Father and the choir. Some obvious questions come to mind immediately, such as can Father and the choir sing comfortably in the same tonality, does one section of music flow into another without difficulties, and can we pick up where we left off successfully after we ve stopped to recite prayers (Creed, Pater imon, etc.). And then there s the big overall question, does all of this really fit together? In fact, if you are reading this article and are getting bored, then that is a good indication I have chosen music for the Liturgy that is blending and uneventful. And that s the goal! It s sort of like a casserole. When all the ingredients are mixed together and baked, it s supposed to taste fantastic. So this is a bit of what I am doing to help create a more chant-like Liturgy, with music that hopefully enhances the worship experience for all of us. Evelyn Sophia Czaja Choir Director Καθώς προχωράμε μέσα στο λειτουργικό έτος, εργάζομαι για την εισαγωγή περισσότερων ύμνων στη μουσική μας για την Θεία Λειτουργία. Στο δεύτερο εξάμηνο θα ακούσετε ένα διαφορετικό Τρισάγιο Ύμνο, κάποιους διαφορετικά αντίφωνα, και ίσως ακόμη και ένα νέο Χερουβικό για το Πάσχα. Ίσως αναρωτιέστε πώς ακριβώς βρίσκω τη μουσική για τη Λειτουργία. Υπάρχουν διάφορες πηγές. Κοιτάζω μέσα από πολυάριθμες λειτουργίες που διοργανώνονται από διάφορους Ελληνες Ορθόδοξους συνθέτες από διάφορα μέρη της χώρας, καθώς επίσης μελετώ ένα ζευγάρι διαδικτυακών σελίδων που διατίθενται για αυτό ακριβώς τοσκοπό. Το δύσκολο μέρος είναι να σιγουρεύομαι ότι η επιλεγμένη μουσική ρέει απαλά καθ 'όλη τη Θεία Λειτουργία χωρίς να επισύρει αδικαιολόγητη προσοχή πάνω της. Η μουσική πρέπει να ενισχύει τη Λειτουργία και να αποδίδει το ιδιαίτερο ύφος της τρέχουσας Λειτουργικήπεριόδου. Η μεγάλη δοκιμη για το αν ή μουσική είναι η όχι σωστή επιλογή γίνεται κατά τη διάρκεια της Λειτουργίας... στο πλαίσιο αυτό, όμως δουλεύω με τον Ιερέα και τη χορωδία. Μερικές προφανείς ερωτήσεις έρχονται στο μυαλό αμέσως, όπως, μπορεί ο Ιερέας και η χορωδία να τραγουδούν άνετα στην ίδια τονικότητα; μπορει ένα τμήμα της μουσικής να ρέει ομαλά μέσα στό άλλο χωρίς δυσκολίες, και μπορούμε να συνεχίσουμε από εκεί που σταματήσαμε με επιτυχία αφού έχουμε διακόψει γιά να απαγγέλλουμε τις προσευχές; (Σύμβολο της Πίστεως, Πάτερ ημών, κλπ.). Υπάρχει μια μεγάλη συνολική ερώτηση, εαν όλα αυτά πραγματικά ταιριάζουν μεταξύ τους. Στην πραγματικότητα, αν διαβάζετε αυτό το άρθρο και έχετε βαρεθεί, τότε αυτό είναι μια καλή ένδειξη οτι έχω επιλέξει μουσική για την Θεία Λειτουργία που εχει καλη ανάμειξη και κυλάει ομαλά. 24 DORMITION CHURCH WEDDING PHOTOGRAPHS Thank you for the initial response for wedding pictures! We are well on our way to filling a book of all the weddings that have taken place at our Assumption/Dormition Church, having received over 50 photographs in the last two months! We are far from finished though, and we need YOUR wedding photo. Were you married at our Dormition Church or maybe it was then called the Assumption Church? Whether you were married at 29 Central Street, down on Somerville Avenue or upstairs in Union Square, we would love to include your wedding photo in a photo book that will be compiled of all the weddings that have been blessed at our beloved Church in Somerville. Also, were your parents married in our Church? Maybe your aunts, uncles, cousins or other relatives who have now passed away were married in Somerville, but you still have access to their wedding photos that could be included in this book? We are asking parishioners, former parishioners and friends to come forward in order to share these memorable wedding photos for all to enjoy. We are trying to include as many couples as possible that have been married here over the past 95-plus years that our parish has been in existence. Here s how you can help: 1. On a sheet of paper, please print clearly the name of the bride (including her maiden name) and the groom, the date (or approximate date) of the wedding, and the names of other people in the photo, if there are any and if you can identify them. Submit the names and wedding date with a copy of each photo. OR 2. Scan in the photo using a setting of at least 300 dpi. OR 3. Bring your photos to the Church to be scanned the photos will not be damaged at all after Divine Liturgy on Sunday, March 17 or April 21. There will be a scanner available and you ll promptly take your photo back home. You may submit the wedding photos and identifying information to the Church Office. Φέρτε τις φωτογραφίες σας στην Εκκλησία για την ηλεκτρονικη αντγραφήη φωτογραφία δεν θα καταστραφεί καθολου - μετά την Θεία Λειτουργία την Κυριακή, 17 Μαρτίου η 21 Απριλίου. It is then, within the liturgical environment of our worship, that the faithful become sanctified. Our Holy Church reenacts for us the Divine Passion, the death on the Cross, the three-day burial, and the Resurrection of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ through scriptural readings, appropriate hymns and divine services. The whole atmosphere of the Holy Week creates in our soul contemplation, piety, repentance, purification, and therefore initiates us to the deeper meaning of the Divine Passion and sacrifice on the Cross of our Lord Jesus Christ. Let us participate with piety and reverence in each and every divine service in order to be able to feel all these emotions, and enjoy the Inextinguishable Light and the ineffable beauty of His Resurrection, while we preach to the rest of the world the message of the Angel: "Do not be alarmed.
