Once upon a time in Thessaloniki, in a region called Dendropotamos, there was the 5 th Primary School of Menemeni. Through the Comenius project, the pupils had the chance to get to know many pupils from other schools in European countries. A certain group of kids had a closer relationship, because of an adventure they experienced in Greece and especially in the Ancient Agora (Forum) in Thessaloniki. In January 2013, Hans from Germany, Tibu from Spain, Aniezka from Poland and Valentino from Italy arrived in Thessaloniki and met Lefteris and Anna from Greece, pupils of the 5 th and 3 rd grade respectively.

Early one morning, the six kids decided to visit the Archaeological area of the Ancient Forum in the center of Thessaloniki to see for themselves what their teachers have told them about this monument. Going into the Ancient Forum through the entrance on Makedonikis Aminis Street, they saw the square and the shops along the cryptoporticus. Getting closer to the southern side of the shopping street, they found themselves looking at a building guarding the city's archives.

Hans, who was the bravest of the kids, suggested they go down the marble stairs and into the dark area of the city's archives. As they were walking on the mosaic floor, a part of the floor beneath their feet collapsed and they fell into the gap. After they regained consciousness, they realized that, although they were still in the Ancient Forum, they had been magically transported through a time machine centuries ago and more specifically to the 1st century AD.

Suddenly, loud voices were heard, and the kids were driven to the Conservatory. There the ecclesia had a meeting. It was the time the Pythia were held. They were athletic and music games held in the town every four years. The subject of the meeting was how they would find the necessary funds for the organization

The ecclesia adopted the kids' suggestion and unanimously voted the collection of the golden and silver items for the creation of coins.

In the afternoon, tired but satisfied from the what they had accomplished, the kids met with the Macedoniarch, the leader of Macedonia, to give him the coins.

He also invited them to the Conservatory to attend the evening concert held in their honor.

While the children were relaxing in the Baths, they were discussing the impressions from the experience they had in the Ancient Agora. They were so happy that, instead of returning to Thessaloniki at the present time, they decided to use the time machine and visit one by one the monuments in each and every country and experience similar excitement.

14 As soon as they returned to the present, the children wouldn t leave this opportunity unexploited. They had to chance to travel through time. As they discovered that the strength of their desire to know their origins, lead them to the past, they decided to repeat it making an appointment to meet each other in their next trip to Germany. Therefore they met in Wuppertal and after having visited significant parts of the city, they decided that the means that would lead them to the past would be the hanging railway train. They waited for the first train at dawn. As soon as they got in, they were transferred to the past

15 Wuppertal in 19th century Oh, where are we now? It is the year We are in a factory where they spin cotton. All children have to work for 69 hours a week. We must start our job at 6 o clock in the morning and finish at 7 o clock in the afternoon. Then we go to a room in the factory where we have school for two lessons. If we are tired and fall asleep, the teacher beats us with a stick. In the factory we have to crawl into the machines to put the strings of cotton together with a knot when they teared. What a hard job. Everywhere is the dust of cotton and many children are ill because they have not enough food. It is so noisy in this factory that I cannot understand what you say and some of the kids here seem to be death. A terrible time this is. Let us leave. Lasst uns weiterreisen.

16 On the bottom, right hand side you see the children making knots to threads in a machine (Foto: Museum of early industrialisation, Wuppertal) This photo shows the house and factory of Mr Engels. He was the first who felt social responsibility for his workers. Today the house is a museum.

17 Castle Schloss Burg What do these men look like? Hey kids, we are in the year This is the castle Burg, high above the river Wupper. And these men are knights. The two men with iron helmet and spears are coming up to us! Hey, you, what are you doing here? We are ambassadors of the king of Normandy, bring us to the count of Berg and Mark. Look, there is a jester. We may not talk to him because he must make the count laugh. If he does not, they will chase him away or even kill him. But let s ask the knight over there some questions. Sir, is it nice to be a knight? It is nice behind the walls of the castle. But when you have to leave into a battle it is really hard. What weapons do you prefer? A good sword and a strong buckler and of course a mace. I fight for the count and he gives me some land for farming and money. But I have to go now. Hey, Ihr, was macht Ihr hier?

18 Neanderthal Oh, what happened to our time machine? We went back for years. Look at that strange looking people. Who are they? Let us ask that girl, she looks friendly. Hallo, who are you? My name is Bruna. And where is your family Well, we live in a gaggle of 14 persons who are my parents and grandparents, two uncles my two brothers, my sister and the three daughters of my aunt. My Uncle Aylu is able to make fire by beating two stones against each other. My Grandma has to take care of the fire so that it never goes out. When the men come home from hunting in the evenings the women prepare the meal. My uncle graves amulets off bones and my grandpa tells stories. Later he dances around the fire and swears to the animals and ghosts so that they are kind to us. Oh friends, look over there! A bear is coming up to us. Let us leave, quick! Lasst uns verschwinden, schnell!

19 Their following meeting was set in Cordoba, where The bus arrived at twelve o`clock. Five students; Hans, Aniezca, Valentino, Anna y Letherin downed the stairs. Suddenly, they saw and greeted Tibu happily. They left the bags in the hotel, then, they went to visit the town. First, they visited all the churches, went around the jewry and gardens of the town. They ate typical food, "salmorejo", "gazpacho" and "jamón ibérico". Finally they visited "La Mezquita". However, not everything was as they expected it to be Primero, ellos visitaron todas las iglesia, hicieron un recorrido por la judería y los jardines de la ciudad.

20 They were walking around the streets of Jewry till, the Mosque. Hans stopped at the gift shop and the group left without him. He realized that his friends were gone, then ran, looking for a phone to call Tibu. What he did. Fortunately, nothing bad happened and continued the visit. They came to the mosque and saw the historic yard of the orange trees. They took pictures and found a fountain with coins inside. Ana, astonished, asked Tibu why there were coins in the fountain. Tibu responded: because people said it can make your wish come true. Then all caught a 5 cent coin and tossed it into the fountain and made a wish to return to X century!!!

Suddenly that pond split in two and a surprising strength dragged the children away. Everything turned up dark. At the bottom they found a light that guided them to an alley which seems to be the outside. When they made up themselves, light clothes and sandals were replacing their vests and shoes. The brick on the streets changed for reddish dichcolth and the great monument of yellow and red arches turned into scaffolding and workers.

22 Confused, they got out of there and searched for help. They walked through Jewry, now full of markets and Arab bazaars; they wondered what could have happened. Unfortunately, nobody knew the answer because of the language differences. When they thought that they had no escape they found a man babbling Latin. Valentino, thanks to classes of this old language, recognised the language and could ask what was happening. This man told them they were in Corduba in the Xth century under Al-Haken II kingdom. After some discussion they came to the conclusion that their wish come true. The solution was easy: They should return to the yard of the orange trees, find the pond, toss a coin again with a different wish now... To return to the XXIst century

Wuasift, the man who helped them, took the group to the works of the Muslim temple. He told them he was the designer of a new enlargement; all of them stared at his plans total bewildered. Once in the yard of the orange trees, they rushed into the pond, but... it wasn't there. It was not built YET. What could they then do to come back?

No estaba construida todavía. Qué podrían hacer para volver? Suddenly, Wuasift said "the only way for you to come back, will be building the pond. I could help you, but you should help me to finish the design and the works. The children accepted delighted. Their stay in this time was delightful, they could learn a lot about the economy of this century, the cultural richness of Corduba. They even had time to talk to great character of this period such as Averroes the famous philosopher and doctor.

Three weeks later they had helped Wuasift with the plans and could build "their" pond to go home. After saying goodbye, they caught a dinar (andalusí coin) with the registration of Califato of Córdoba and year They cast it into the fountain and they wished to return to the XXI century. They opened their eyes wide, they were sitting on the floor opposite the fountain, then watched the coins in the pond. All were shining; however there was a coin which had very special luminosity. Letherin introduced his hand and extracted the coin. He read therein: "Califato of Corduba, year " They got very shocked.

27 Lefteris, impressed by the gold coin and suggested to his friends to keep it as it might prove itself useful in the future. A few months later, they met in Montopoli of Italy and for the first time the company seemed indecisive to which place they should choose next,so I cinque ragazzi partono con la macchina del tempo perché vogliono visitare l Italia del passato. The five kids leave with the time machine because they want to visit Italy in the past. Unfortunately the machine doesn t work well and they can t go all in the same period: They first stop in the XV th century, then in the Roman time, the Etruscan time and at last in the prehistoric time.

Siamo a Montopoli V/A, ragazzino. Finalmente abbiamo sconfitto Pisa, Lucca, Siena!

29 Catapulted back in time..... puff.. Hans finds himself on green grass: the sun is shining and he hears the clip clop of horses and the joyful laughter of children around him. Hans, a young German boy of 12 wearing jeans and a sweatshirt who is used to TV, cars and computers, draws closer to a boy who seems very strange to him and thinks to himself: How can he go around wearing that tunic without any video games. Hans goes up to Paolo, that s the name of the strange boy, and as he comes closer he realises strange things around him. stone buildings, horses and knights, they are all talking and smiling happily but there are no mobile phones, roads, skyscrapers or trains, nothing at all. Excuse me, where are we? Why is everyone so happy? We re in Montopoli Val d Arno, boy. We re happy because today, after 300 years of battle, the war is finally over and Montopoli is under the rule of Florence. We ve finally conquered Pisa, Lucca, Siena!

Continuano a camminare e Paolo esordi- sce Guarda quell arco in pietra com è imponente! The Insigne Castello ( Famous Castle, as it s called by the poet and writer Boccaccio) has in fact been under constant siege from the great Tuscan cities for years due to its strategic position. Amazed by what is happening to him, Hans continues talking to Paolo. The year is 1432 and in that period incredible things are happening in Tuscany. He tells him of important personalities who have lived in Florence, such as Dante, Boccaccio, Filippo Lippi and Donatello. Hans notes that as he speaks, Paolo draws on stone using charcoal - he s very good. They keep on walking and suddenly Paolo says Look at that magnificent stone arch! It s the arch of Castruccio Castracani, a noble and powerful leader of mercenaries from Lucca who waged battles more or less everywhere in Tuscany, also here in Montopoli!

31 E guarda quella Torre! And look at that Tower! Florence built it to fortify this castle here. This fortress is impenetrable. It s the beautiful Tower of San Matteo! Do you know what Hans? I d like to be famous someday, too, just think what it would be like to be well-known to our descendants, to be immortal for ever just like Dante or this Tower!

32

Hans was so enthusiastic about his new acquaintance and this wonderful, magical place that he no longer wanted to go away: he didn t want to leave his knowledgeable new friend, so different from him yet so similar at the same time. But Hans had to go home, his family would surely be waiting for him: it was already late so he had to leave this enchanted place. He said goodbye to Paolo Farewell my Italian friend, and thank you. I m con- vinced you ll be remembered just like Dante or this Tower! And winking to him, he went away hastily. And so it came to pass that 3 years after Hans visit, Paolo Uccello (Florence 15 June Florence 10 December 1475) painted La Battaglia di San Romano (The Battle of San Romano). An immortal painting, today preserved at the Uffizi Gallery in Florence, the Louvre Museum in Paris and the National Gallery in London. Every time he sees that painting, Hans thinks back with a smile to his incredible adventure and his friend Paolo.

I arrived in Rome with the time machine, I decided to walk along the streets, I met artisans with shops selling ceramic pots, jewellery and things made of glass. A seat was Julius Caesar with the silver armour and a sword of golden and fifteen guards who protected him. I was excited and when I go close to Caesar, the wards stopped me because they thought I was a servant. Then they made me clean the room of Caesar, and when I cleaned the windows in the garden I saw that there was the time machine, I went up and in an instant I found myself at home knowing I had a fan- tastic feeling.
