14 Preface The 11th International Conference on Greek Linguistics was held at the Department of Mediterranean Studies, University of the Aegean, from September 26 to 29, In total, 234 papers were presented, including three plenary talks by invited speakers, six thematic workshops, and a pre-conference student workshop. This edited volume contains the majority of the papers submitted, which were selected after a blind review process, and illustrates the wide range of current research in all branches of Greek linguistics, synchronically and diachronically. This publication is the result of the work of many people to whom we would like to express our gratitude. 15 ON THE PHONOLOGY AND ORTHOGRAPHY OF THE THESSALIAN MID-LONG VOWELS Matthew J.C. Scarborough University of Cambridge Abstract In all attested periods of the Ancient Thessalian dialect there are two mid-long vowels, written as <E> and <O> in the archaic epichoric alphabet and <EI> and <OY> in the Ionic alphabet. Traditionally the Ionic alphabet spellings have been explained as raised mid-high vowels /eː/ and /oː/. This paper problematizes this assumption, examining evidence from inscriptions transitional between the two scripts, and proposes that the spellings <ΕΙ> and <ΟΥ> may be plausibly interpreted instead as a specifically Thessalian standardized orthography for central-mid vowels /e ː/ and /o ː/. Keywords: Thessalian, Greek dialectology, historical phonology, long vowel systems, orthography, epigraphy 1. Classification of long vowel systems in the Ancient Greek dialects since the work of Heinrich Ahrens (1839, 1843) can be thought of in terms of the configuration of the mid-long vowels in a given dialectal system. 1 Ahrens classified the Doric dialects according to their reflexes of long vowels from secondary sources into dialects of mitior or seuerior character. 2 Although this system of classification was applied only to the Doric dialects, the basic principles can be extended to the rest of Ancient Greek as a system of typological classification. The vocalism ascribed to Ahrens s Doris seuerior type reflect a five-vowel, three-aperture system, inherently stable and balanced in its phonological space, quite similar to the system inherited by Common Greek from Late Proto-Indo-European. 3 By contrast, the vocalism of Ahrens s Doris mitior type is innovative, and created two new secondary close-mid long vowel 1 In reference works on Greek dialects and their phonology (e.g. Bartoněk 1966, 1972, Allen 1987) it is common to use the symbols ē, ō and ē, ō to represent vowels of open-mid and close-mid quality respectively. Throughout this paper I use the corresponding symbols of the International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA), i.e. ē = [ɛː], ō = [ɔː], ē = [eː], ō = [oː]. For vowels of central-mid quality there is no exact equivalent in IPA, and the symbols [e ː] and [ɛ ː] could in principle be used to represent the same front central-mid vowel phonetically. In this paper I will use [e ː] and [o ː] to designate vowels of central-mid character as found in Greek dialects of the Doris seuerior type. Note that all dialectal forms cited other than Attic-Ionic and Lesbian will be marked without accentuation, as we have little reliable information about the accentuation of other dialects. Cf. Probert (2006: 70ff.). 2 Ahrens (1843: ) 3 Doris seuerior vocalism can be found in e.g. Lakonian, but from the viewpoint of Greek-internal sound changes, a dialect such as Lesbian could also be considered to be seuerior on a typological level. 16 11th International Conference on Greek Linguistics phonemes /eː/ and /oː/ from the three waves of compensatory lengthening, isovocalic contractions, and monophthongization of inherited *ei and *ou. These new mid-long vowel phonemes were distinct from the inherited primary central-mid /e ː/ and /o ː/ vowels, which in turn were pushed down to low-mid /ɛː/ and /ɔː/.4 2. The principle difficulty in detecting the configuration of a given dialect s long vowel system at an early period, however, is the limitations of various epichoric alphabets in use before the general adoption of the Ionic alphabet. The case of Attic epigraphy furnishes the best-known example. As the Athenian state officially adopted the Ionic alphabet in 403 bc the orthographic system reflected the seven-vowel, four-aperture mitior vocalism in Ionic. Hence the new close-mid vocalic phonemes /eː/ and /oː/ were represented through the digraph spellings <ΕΙ> and <ΟΥ>, whereas the original, inherited long vowels which were pushed down in their phonological space to /ɛː/ and /ɔː/ were indicated by the new graphemes <Η>and <Ω>.5 Attic s adaptation of this system was fairly straightforward, as the dialect s vowel system developed more-orless phonologically parallel to Ionic. Early Attic had a four-grade mitior system, but it further fronted inherited /uː/ to /yː/, dragging secondary /oː/ into fronted /yː/ s former position, resulting in the following system. 6 Figure 1: The Classical Attic System of Long Vowels (cf. Allen 1987: 62) <Ι> /iː/ /yː/ <Υ> /uː/ <ΟΥ> <ΕΙ> /eː/ <Η> /ɛː/ /o ː/ <Ω> <Α> /aː/ 3. The Boeotian vowel system, as is well known, developed quite differently in the early period. Its early monophthongization of the inherited diphthong *ai > /ɛː/ triggered a push-chain on the front axis in its long vowel system foreshadowing itacism in the 4 Doris mitior vocalism can be found in, e.g. the North West Greek dialects Aetolian and Lokrian, but by typological extension, a dialect like early Ionic could be described as having a Doris mitior type vowel system. 5 Elements of the Ionic alphabet were used in Attica in prior to 403 BC, and it would be misleading to suggest that there was not a period of transition in private and public inscriptions from the local Attic alphabet to the Ionic alphabet before its use was officially mandated, and there exist sporadic examples of the use of <Η> and <Ω> as graphemes in Attic already prior to 450 BC (cf. Threatte 1980: 41ff.). Nevertheless, the date of the state-sanctioned adoption of the Ionic alphabet as a standard orthography for Attic serves as a recognizable point of departure for our discussion. 6 For a detailed rehearsal of the development of the Attic-Ionic vowel systems, see Thompson (2006). 17 selected papers / πρακτικα long vowel systems from the Hellenistic koiné to Modern Greek. 7 Boeotian first created a new secondary close-mid /eː/ on the front axis from the first and second compensatory lengthenings and the monophthongization of *ei, a development reminiscent of dialects of the mitior type, however secondary long vowels on the back axis vowels merged with inherited central-back /o ː/, a development of the seuerior type. These unique developments did not create the pressures on the back axis that might have triggered a fronting of inherited *ū to /yː/ from back-axis crowding, and consequently the Boeotians adaptation of the Ionic script from Attica was relatively unproblematic, as the Attic graphemes <Η> = [ɛː], <ΕΙ> = [eː], <Ω> = [ɔː], and <ΟΥ> = [uː], since all had direct phonetic equivalents in the Boeotian long vowel system, despite that the Boeotian vowels had developed rather differently from those of Attic. The result is that Boeotian orthography, at the time of the adaptation of the Attic script, has the appearance of being written phonetically, if one were to consider the Attic adaptation of the Ionic script as a phonetic script. Example (1) compares equivalent grammatical forms in Attic and Boeotian orthography. (1) Boeot. ασουλια /asuːlía/ (IG VII ; etc.) vs. Att.ἀσυλία /asyːlía/ (IG II² ; etc.) Boeot. ουσστερω /ʰuːsːtéro ː/ (IG VII 522.2) vs. Att. ὑστέρου /ʰyːstéruː/ (IG II² 381.6) 4. While tracing diachronic relationships between phonology and orthography in better attested dialects such as Ionic, Attic, and Boeotian is comparatively easy due to abundant evidence with clear phonological interpretations, the evidence for interpreting the Thessalian vowel system scarcer and more perplexing. The archaic local Thessalian alphabet, like many other archaic alphabets, did not distinguish vocalic length, and mid-vowels from any source were only marked as front or back quality using either <Ε> or <Ο>. 8 When the Ionic alphabet was introduced in the fourth century, however, all mid-long vowels, whether primary or secondary sources, were written with digraphs <ΕΙ> and <ΟΥ>, and the Ionic graphemes <Η> and <Ω>, occasionally appearing in a small number of inscriptions transitional between the two scripts, completely disappear from Thessalian proper. The interpretations of the spellings of Thessalian mid-long vowels made by Buck and Thumb in their respective dialect handbooks are unsatisfactory. Both interpret the spellings as representing their corresponding Attic values, i.e. <ΕΙ> as front close-mid [eː] and <ΟΥ> as back high [uː]. 10 However, if we were to follow this literal transposition of phonetic values to our graphemes within the phonological system of Thessalian, we would arrive at an arrangement of the long vowel system that has a pileup of vowels at the top and front of the vowel space (/iː/, /yː/, /uː/, /eː/), but hardly anything in the low and back of the vowel space except for a lone /aː/. Such a system would also appear to be radically asymmetrical to the corresponding short vowel system as well. 6. Not long after the appearance of the first editions of Buck and Thumb s handbooks, Bechtel analyzed the Thessalian spellings of mid-long vowels in the Ionic alphabet as parallel raisings of inherited central-mid /e ː/ and /o ː/ to their corresponding high-mid values, noting that Die gleichzeitige Veränderung der Aussprache von ē und ō in jeder Lage ist ein charakteristisches Merkmal des Thessalischen and that this configuration was structurally unique to the Thessalian dialect. 11 Although Bechtel s observations were not incorporated into the revised editions of Buck (1955) and Scherer s (1959) revision of Thumb s (1909) handbook, both repeating the exact interpretations found in their respective first editions verbatim. Bechtel s interpretation of the Thessalian digraph spellings as close-mid [eː] and [oː], however, was swiftly re-asserted, as Bartoněk (1962) rightly pointed out that the comparison with Boeotian phonology, and by extension, the direct transposition of Attic 9 <Y> for monophthongized *ou at Matropolis (cf. 19 selected papers / πρακτικα orthography upon Thessalian, was not valid, as it could be shown that the structural motivations for the raising of inherited *ē in Boeotian were incompatible with what can be ascertained from the Thessalian data. The motivations for the raising in Thessalian must have been of a different nature than that for Boeotian. 7. While Bartoněk (1962) persuasively put the difficulties of Buck s and Thumb s assumption of a direct transposition of post-403 BC Attic and Boeotian orthography to rest, his structuralist analysis of Thessalian vocalism still ran into difficulties in explaining the configuration of the Thessalian long vowel system ca. 350 BC. The interpretation of the spellings <ΕΙ> and <ΟΥ> as [eː] and [oː] necessarily constituted a five-vowel system, but one unbalanced in its phonological space. Bartoněk (1966) later offered a possible explanation for the raising of the vowels as a result of a general, unmotivated raising of inherited /aː/ upwards in the vowel space (perhaps [a ː]), with the effect that the mid-long vowels would be pushed upwards in order to maintain equilibrium. Figure 2: Bartoněk (1966:180) s Reconstruction of the Thessalian Long Vowel System ca. 350 BC /iː/ /uː/ (oi ) /eː/ /oː/ (ai ) (?) /aː/ In principle, such a chain-shift in the long-vowel system would be typologically unobjectionable, however the principal problem of assuming such a chain-shift in Thessalian beginning with a heightened pronunciation of /aː/ is the inherent limitations of the epigraphical data Since Bartoněk (1966), it has been generally unquestioned in the literature that the Thessalian digraph spellings <ΕΙ>and <ΟΥ> represent their Ionic values as close-mid 12 The first general principle of vowel shifting, as observed by William Labov (1994: 116ff.) is the tendency for long vowels to rise in chain shifts. Slight differences in dialectal pronunciation of /aː/ can occasionally be detected, but usually only through chance-examples of indirect evidence. The famous sixth century Lakonian dedication to Zeus at Olympia (IG V,1 1562) may give such an example via the spelling hιλε ϝοῑ (expected: hιλα ϝοῑ). In Elean, the phoneme /ɛː/ had acquired a more low and open character, closer to [æː], and was written with <Α> in Elean inscriptions (e.g. El. ϝρα τρα = Att. ῥήτρα). Lakonian /aː/ must have been perceptually distinct from Elean /æː/ <Α>, and the local stonecutter, making the dedication in the local Elean alphabet, must have hypercorrected the spelling * hιλα ϝοῑ to hιλε ϝοῑ in order to distinguish the difference between the vowels. 20 11th International Conference on Greek Linguistics [eː] and [oː], establishing the exact chronology of this raising based on the evidence of the inscriptions is problematic. Blümel (1982: 43) has noted that while the introduction of the spellings in the Ionic alphabet between the fifth and the fourth century secure a terminus ante quem for the vowel raising. Healso indicates two examples of <ΟΥ> apparently being used to spell inherited *ō in earlier inscriptions that may indicate the seventh century or the fifth century as possible earlier examples. These examples deserve to be reconsidered. 9. The earliest possible example of <ΟΥ> being used to write inherited *ōis an inscription on a seventh century Corinthian aryballos: (2) McDevitt 1167 Corinthian aryballos Prov. unkn. ca BC (Lejeune REA 47 (1945) 97; Jeffery 1990:125n3; cf. Wachter 2001: 30-31) ΑΠΛΟΥΝ The inscription has been known since at least 1841, although Lejeune (1945) was the first to interpret it as la plus ancienne inscription thessalienne, interpreting it as a dedication to Apollo made by a Thessalian potter operating in Corinth. While the reading as Απλουν is attractive, recalling known Thessalian dedications to Apollo with characteristic syncopation its medial stem syllable (cf. Απλο νι in archaic script (IG IX,2:1027; Larisa, BC); Απλουνι in Ionic script (IG IX,2:1234; Phalanna, 1 st c. BC). However this interpretation of this inscription is not so clear. Although Corinthian alphabet utilizes spurious diphthongs to spell close-mid vowels quite early, allowing such a raising of original central-mid *ō to /oː/ be observable on the backaxis, 13 the syntax of Απλουν as a nominative rather than a dative or genitive case form is unexpected for a votive object. The interpretation favored by Wachter (2001: 30-31), that the inscription should be read as ἁπλοῦν simple, unmixed describing the contents of the vessel, (scil. ἔλαιϝον, μύρονvel sim.), appears to be preferable in this situation. 10. The other inscription Blümel cites as evidence for early digraph spellings for inherited *ō is IG IX,2:199, a fifth century dedication from Achaea Phthiotis. (3) IG IX,2:199 (Achaea Phthiotis, Eretria) ca BC (Jeffery 1990: 96n1) Μεθιστας Πιθουνειος Απλουνι The digraph <ΕΙ> in the patronymic Πιθουνειος need not concern us, as the formation of the patronymic adjective likely contains a real diphthong. However the presence of <ΟΥ> in the second syllable of Πιθουνειος and Απλουνι is unexpected in 13 Corinthian monophthongized its diphthongs *ei and *ou at an early date, resulting in the creation of the new digraphs already in its archaic alphabet.
