Nora Presti THE ASCENSION OF OUR LORD AND SAVIOR JESUS CHRIST By His Eminence Metropolitan Panteleimon of Antinoes The events of the Ascension into Heaven and the Enthronement of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on the right hand of God the Father is mentioned by the Evangelist St Luke at the end of his Gospel (Luke 24:50) and at the beginning of the Book of Acts (1:1-11). Partially, the Evangelist Mark towards the end of his Gospel, which was added in a later stage, refers to the event, but very shortly he says: after He spoken to them He ascended into heaven and sat on the right of God (Mark 16:19). St John the Apostle and Evangelist has a prophetic saying concerning the Divine Ascension in chapter 20:17 of his Gospel. The Ascension of our Lord took place near Jerusalem, on Mount of Olives, in the district of Bethany, forty days after His glorious Resurrection. During those forty days the Lord after his suffering he presented himself alive to them by many convincing proofs, appearing to them during forty days and speaking about the kingdom of God (Acts 1:3). Also, on the Mountain Christ prayed to His Father before His Sufferings. The Suffering on the Cross led to the glory of the Resurrection, and in turns to the Divine Ascension. The mystery of Christ s Ascen- sion and the Enthronement on the right hand of God the Father is a supernatural, but historical, event which is beyond any natural experience of the eyewitnesses, the holy Apostles. The Ascension of Christ is not merely an event of His life on earth, but an event which takes place also in the sphere of the supernatural world, where it finds its real cosmic dimensions. The Messianic Psalm 23 refers to the dialogue which takes place between the Angels, who express their admiration for Jesus Christ Who enters

2 The Mystery of Ascension into Heaven: Lift up your gates, ye princes, and be ye lifted up, ye everlasting doors; and the king of glory shall hand of God the Father come in. Who is this king of Glory? the Lord strong and mighty, the Lord mighty in battle. Lift up your gates, ye princes; and be ye lift up, ye everlasting doors; and the king of glory shall come in. Who is this king of glory? The Lord of hosts, he is this king of glory (Psalm 23:7-10). Psalm 109:1-4 refers to the Messiah s Enthronement on the right of God the Father and His victory against His enemies. Ascension Day, as a feast was introduced from the 4 th century, in the beginning by the Church of Jerusalem. Before the 1 st Ecumenical Council in the year 325 AD, Ascension Day was celebrated together with the Day of Pentecost. The mystery of Ascension refers to the Royal Office of Christ, as King. The Catholic Epistle to the Hebrews connects the heavenly intervention of Jesus with His supreme hierarchal attribute, as a High Priest. The whole Divine Economia (Dispensation) of our salvation is not only Christ-centered, but it was realized together with the Father and the Holy Spirit. The Lord s Ascension was realized by the Father in the glory of the Holy Spirit. Thus, the Almightiness and the Royal Office of the Son of God is revealed. With the Ascension Christ s Nativity is fulfilled, for the human nature of Christ, glorified The whole work of salvation of and deified, is united inseparably with the Divine Nature. Christ, from the Incarnation to the Ascension, has two movements: 1) from top to bottom, and 2) from the bottom to the top, descent and ascent, consent and elevation, emptiness and glory. The continuous descent, in other words the willing humbleness of the Son of God, consist the mystery of the Nativity, which continues throughout the earthly life of Christ till the Sufferings and Death on the Cross and the Descent into Hades. Pascha is realized from the moment of death and the entrance into the new life, by which the ascent from bottom to top takes place, with the glorious Ascension of Christ from the depths of the earth to the Heavenly Father. The Feast of the Divine Ascension has an important meaning for Christianity and the spiritual life, because it is refers to the deification of each and every man, which in its turns refers to the deepest meaning of the spiritual life in Christ. This perfect feast invites us all to reach our spiritual perfection and fulfillment, which is achieved only within the Church. For without Christ we cannot achieve anything. The Lord ascended into Heaven with all His glory, let this day become for us our ascension into the heights of virtues, for the glory of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. Amen. A FUNERAL OF A COUNTRYMAN On Friday, 20 th May, 2011, at Kalas Funeral Home, (6160 Oxon Hill Rd., Oxon Hill, MD 20745), took place the funeral of the late GEORGE KALOS, who passed away on the 15 th May, 2011, at the age of 84. Was buried at RESURRECTION CEMETRY, Oxon Hill. His Eminence Metropolitan Panteleimon of Antinoes, the President, the Administrative Committee and all the parishioners of St Theodore Greek Orthodox Church, Lanham MD, express their heartfelt condolences to the KALOS family, for the departure of the late GEORGE KALOS. May his memory be eternal. MONASTERY PILGRIMAGE The pilgrims to the Monastery of St. Nektarios gather for a memorable photograph. A group of parishioners from St. Theodore joined in a pilgrimage to the Holy Monastery of St. Nektarios in Roscoe, New York, from May 28th-29th. The pilgrimage was immensely spiritually beneficial; a retreat and reprieve from the everyday world. Special thanks to Athanasia Mantzouranis for her efforts in planning and as serving as an invaluable guide.

Page 4 PREPERATIONS FOR THE WELCOMING AND DINNER IN HONOUR OF HIS EMINENCE METROPOLITAN OF NEW JERSEY EVANGELOS AND THE SACRED CLERGY On Saturday, 21 st May, 2011, at 06:00 pm His Eminence Metropolitan Evangelos of New Jersey arrived at St Theodore Greek Orthodox Church, Lanham MD. His Eminence Evangelos and His Deacons were welcomed by His Eminence Metropolitan Panteleimon of Antinoes, the General Vicar Fr Cosmas, the Clergy, the President Mr. John Maroulis, members of the Administrative Council and Ladies from the Philoptochos. His Eminence Panteleimon then spoke and thanked all the ladies of the Philoptochos Sisterhood as well as all the men who have donated and contributed to the success of the dinner. Special thanks to the General Vicar, Fr Cosmas, and all the pious priests who came from various parts of the Metropolis to honor us with their presence that night. The two Hierarchs first exchanged the kiss of love. Then they went down at the Church s Hall together with the clergy of the Holy Metropolis. His Eminence Evangelos blessed the rich traditional food and addressed the faithful, thanking all those who worked hard in order that this evening to be successful.

Παληειεήκσλ. Page 5 HIERARCHAL CONCELEBRATION On Sunday, 22 nd May, 2011, a Hierarchal cocelebration took place at St Theodore Greek Orthodox Church, Lanham MD. The Divine Liturgy was presided by His Eminence Metropolitan EVAN- GELOS of New Jersey assisted by His Eminence Metropolitan Panteleimon. The Rev. Protopresbyters Fr Stylianos and Fr Demetrios together with the two Deacons Fr. Michael and Fr. Panagiotes also assisted. The choir was lead by Mr. Constantinos Rodousakis. During the Divine Liturgy His Eminence Metropolitan EVANGELOS addressed the faithful and expressed His gratitude to the President and the Council Members for the good work that the small community is doing. He also expressed His heartfelt satisfaction that His Eminence Metropolitan Panteleimon of Antinoes has accepted to be accounted amongst the clergy of the Metropolis of New Jersey. After the Divine Liturgy, His Eminence EVANGE- LOS blessed the new members of the Philoptochos and afterwards coffee and sweets were served down at the Church s Hall.

6 Ζ ΔΣΖΗΑ ΓΔΝΗΚΖ ΤΝΔΛΔΤΖ ΣΖ ΚΟΗΝΟΣΖΣΟ Μεηά από ηελ αλαρώξεζε ηνπ εβ. Μεηξ. Νέαο Ηεξζέεο θ.θ. ΔΤΑΓΓΔΛΟΤ, έιαβε ρώξα ε Δηήζηα Γεληθή πλέιεπζεο ηεο Διιεληθήο Κνηλόηεηαο ηνπ Αγίνπ Θενδώξνπ. Καηά ηελ δηάξθεηα ηεο ζπλέιεπζεο, αθνύ εγθξίζεθαλ ηα πξαθηηθά ηεο πξνεγνπκέλεο ρξνληάο, κίιεζαλ κε ηελ ζεηξά: 1.Ο εβ. Μεηξ. θ.θ. Παληειεήκσλ 2.Ο Πξόεδξνο ηεο Διιεληθήο Κνηλόηεηαο, θ. Ησάλλεο Μαξνύιεο. 3.Ο Σακίαο θ. Παληειήο Εατξεο. Ζ εθπξόζσπνο ηεο Φηινπηώρνπ Αδειθόηεηαο. Ζ ζπλέιεπζε έθιεηζε ρσξίο ηδηαίηεξα πξνβιήκαηα. ΣΖΔ SPRING PARISH ASSEMBLY Page 6 After the departure of His Eminence Metropolitan Evangelos, the Spring Parish Assembly took place, as it was postponed from the last week s schedule. During the meeting the following persons spoke: 1.His Eminence Metropolitan Panteleimon. 2.The President of the Greek Community, Mr John Maroulis. 3.The Treasurer, Mr Pantelis Zairis. The representative of the Philoptochos. The meeting closed in very well manner and without any problems. ELECTIONS OF THE PHILOPTOCHOS On Sunday, 15 th May, 2011, at the Church s Office of St Theodore, Lanham MD, took place the election for the new Administrative Committee of the Philoptochos. The meeting was presided by Mrs. Mary Curtis. After the legal processions a new Administrative Committee was elected, which is composed by: Mrs. Angeline Alexiou, Mrs. Kiki Fanourgakis, Mrs. Stella Higgs, Mrs. Maria Kapsalis, Mrs Koula Kretsis, Mrs Ourania Manessis, Mrs Elaine Michaelides and Mrs. Anthie Zairis. The leaving President Mrs Mary Curtis, was honored as Honoring Member.
