John Romas (914) Ήχος Βαρύς-Εωθινόν Ευαγγέλιο Ι Ο γνωστός Όσιος Παίσιος ανακυρήχθηκε Άγιος την Τρίτη 13 Ιανουαρίου, Το παρακάτω κείμενο είναι μια απο της πολύ σοφές του διδασκαλίες περί της απλότητας του ανθρώπου. - Γέροντα, η μελέτη των βιβλίων και η γνώση βοηθούν να γνωρίσει κανείς τον Θεό;- Κοίταξε να σου πω όταν εργασθεί κανείς πνευματικά και φθάσει σε μια καλή πνευματική κατάσταση, βλέπει μερικά πράγματα πολύ καθαρά, με τον θείο φωτισμό, χωρίς να τα έχει γνωρίσει από τα βιβλία. Και μάλιστα τα βλέπει καθαρώτερα από άλλους που έχουν διαβάσει του κόσμου τα βιβλία. Με την εσωτερική του καθαρότητα βλέπει καθαρά πολύ μακριά και πολύ βαθιά, γιατί έχει βγη από την κοσμική τροχιά και κινείται πλέον στην πνευματική τροχιά, στον μυστηριακό χώρο. Όσοι απέκτησαν την εσωτερική απλότητα και καθαρότητα βλέπουν τα υπερφυσικά πράγματα πολύ απλά, σαν φυσικά, γιατί στον Θεό όλα απλά είναι- όπως και ο Ίδιος είναι πολύ απλός, και μας το φανέρωσαν ο Υιός Του επί της γης με την αγία Του απλότητα-και δεν χρησιμοποιεί μεγαλύτερη δύναμη για τα υπερφυσικά και μικρότερη για τα φυσικά, αλλά την ίδια δύναμη για όλα.- Δηλαδή, Γέροντα, μπορεί ένας άνθρωπος χωρίς πολλή μελέτη να γνωρίσει τα μυστήρια του Θεού;- Ναι, αν έχη την αγία απλότητα, μπορεί όχι μόνο να γνωρίσει αλλά και να ζήση τα μυστήρια του Θεού. Θυμάστε εκείνον τον πολύ απλό μοναχό που αξιώθηκε να φάη μαζί με τον Χριστό; Πριν γίνη μοναχός, ήταν βοσκός, και το μόνο που τον ενδιέφερε ήταν πώς θα σωθή. Κάποτε πέρασε από τα μέρη του ένας ερημίτης και του είπε: «Αν θέλης να σωθής, να βαδίζης τον ίσιο δρόμο». Αυτός πήρε κατά γράμμα τον λόγο του. Παίρνει λοιπόν ένα δρόμο και τρεις μέρες βάδιζε συνέχεια όλο ίσια, ώσπου τελικά έφθασε σε ένα μοναστήρι.εκεί ο ηγούμενος, όταν είδε τον πόθο που είχε για την σωτηρία του, τον έκανε αμέσως μοναχό και τον έβαλε να διακονή στην εκκλησία. Μια μέρα, την ώρα που καθάριζε τον ναό, πέρασε ο ηγούμενος και τον συμβούλεψε να κάνη καλά τη δουλειά του. Εκείνος, αφού άκουσε τις συμβουλές,ρώτησε τον Γέροντα δείχνοντας τον Εσταυρωμένο: «Γέροντα, ποιός είναι αυτός που στέκεται εκεί επάνω; Έχω τόσες μέρες εδώ και δεν κατέβηκε ούτε να φάη ούτε να πιή». Θαύμασε ο ηγούμενος την απλότητά του και του λέει: «Εγώ τον τιμώρησα να στέκεται εκεί επάνω, γιατί δεν έκανε καλά τη δουλειά του». Ο μοναχός τον άκουσε χωρίς να πη τίποτε. Το βράδυ πήρε το φαγητό του και κλείσθηκε μέσα στον ναό. Πήγε κάτω από τον Εσταυρωμένο και Του είπε με πόνο: «Κατέβα, αδελφέ, να φάμε μαζί». Τότε ο Χριστός κατέβηκε και έφαγε μαζί με τον απλό μοναχό και του υποσχέθηκε ότι θα τον πάρη στο σπίτι του Πατέρα Του, για να ευφραίνεται αιώνια. Πράγματι, μετά από λίγες μέρες ο απλός αυτός μοναχός κοιμήθηκε ειρηνικά. Βλέπετε, τέλεια άγνοια είχε, αλλά τι αξιώθηκε να ζήση, χάρη στην πολλή απλότητα και καθαρότητα που είχε! Για να αναπαυθεί η Χάρις του Θεού στον άνθρωπο, πρέπει να υπάρχει μέσα του αυτό το άδολο, το καθαρό. Ο Θεός χαρίζεται σε όσους έχουν εξαγνισμένη απλότητα. Όταν προηγηθή η απλότητα και η καθαρότητα, με την θερμή πίστη και την ευλάβεια, φθάνει μετά ο άνθρωπος να έχη θεία γεγονότα και να γνωρίζη τα μυστήρια του Θεού, χωρίς να έχει γνώσεις. Γιατί τότε φιλοξενείται μέσα του η Αγία Τριάδα και με τον θείο φωτισμό που έχει βρίσκει εύκολα τα κλειδιά των θείων νοημάτων και ερμηνεύει το πνεύμα του Θεού πολύ απλά και φυσικά, χωρίς διανοητικό πονοκέφαλο. Όταν καθαρίσουμε την πονηρή μας καρδιά, «εκ της οποίας εξέρχονται όλα τα κακά», θα γίνουμε καθαρά και ταπεινά δοχεία της θείας Χάριτος και Θα αναπαύεται πλέον μέσα μας η Αγία Τριάδα. Θα εύχομαι κι εγώ για σας, καθώς κι εσείς να εύχεσθε για μένα,να βοηθήσουν ο Χριστός και η Παναγία να καθαρισθούν οι καρδιές μας, για να δούμε τον Θεό. «Μακάριοι οι καθαροί τη καρδία, ότι αυτοί τον Θεόν όψονται». St. Paul's Letter to the Hebrews 13:7-16 Brethren, remember your leaders, those who spoke to you the word of God; consider the outcome of their lives, and imitate their faith. Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and for ever. Do not be led away by diverse and strange teachings; for it is well that the heart be strengthened by grace, not by foods, which have not benefited their adherents. We have an altar from which those who serve the tent have no right to eat. For the bodies of those animals whose blood is brought into the sanctuary by the high priest as a sacrifice for sin are burned outside the camp. So Jesus also suffered outside the gate in order to sanctify the people through his own blood. Therefore let us go forth to him outside the camp and bear the abuse he endured. For here we have no lasting city, but we seek the city which is to come. Through him then let us continually offer up a sacrifice of praise to God, that is, the fruit of lips that acknowledge his name. When He saw them He said to them, "Go and show yourselves to the priests." And as they went they were cleansed. Then one of them, when he saw that he was healed, turned back, praising God with a loud voice; and he fell on his face at Jesus's feet, giving Him thanks. Now he was a Samaritan. Then said Jesus: "Were not ten cleansed? Where are the nine? Was no one found to return and give praise to God except this foreigner?" And He said to him: "Rise and go your way; your faith has made you well."

5 CANONIZATION OF SAINTS On January 13, 2015, the Orthodox Church canonized elder Paisios into the ranks of saints. The Orthodox Church does not follow any official procedure for the "recognition" of saints. Initially the Church accepted as saints those who had suffered martyrdom for Christ. The saints are saints thanks to the grace of God, and they do not need official ecclesiastical recognition. The Christian people, reading their lives and witnessing their performance of miracles, accept and honor them as saints. St. John Chrysostom, persecuted and exiled by the civil and ecclesiastical authorities, was accepted as a saint of the Church by popular acclaim. St. Basil the Great was accepted immediately after his death as a saint of the Church by the people. Recently, in order to avoid abuses, the Ecumenical Patriarchate has issued special encyclical letters (tomoi) in which the Holy Synod "recognizes" or accepts the popular feelings about a saint. Such an example in our days is St. Nicodemos of the Holy Mountain (1955).Since the early Christian period there have been preserved many moving descriptions of the lives and martyrdoms and the miracles of the saints. They were (and still are) called synaxaria (from the Greek word Synaxis, meaning a meeting in the church for liturgical purposes, where the lives of the Saints were read). St. Nicodemos of the Holy Mountain composed synaxaria of the saints during the eighteenth century; and, most recently, Fr. George Poulos and Dr. Constantine Cavarnos have written lives of the saints in English. *** Brief Summary of the life of St. Paisios Elder Paisios of Mount Athos of eternal memory, Arsenios Eznepidis in the world ( ), is the greatest figure of modern Orthodox monasticism. His spiritual brilliance has for a long time exceeded Greece's borders, as well as those of the Greekspeaking local Churches, and has spread throughout all Orthodoxy, even captivating many heterodox. It has not diminished as time passes but has increased because of the many miracles that his sanctified soul performs even after his death, being next to the Throne of glory in Christ's Kingdom. Even a brief reference to the events in his life would certainly not do justice to his universally acknowledged spiritual glory, which cannot be completely apprehended, not even through his extensive teachings, which consist of numerous volumes, nor through the narration of third parties about his wondrous life and miracles. This is because the sanctity of the saints is immaterial, indescribable and incomprehensible and has been obtained by God's grace through secret, supernatural struggles. We can only be partakers of it to a certain extent, according to the degree that the charitable Lord's providence allows.elder Paisios' life is also distinguished for his excessive asceticism, vigils, fasting, and ceaseless prayer. These did not subside with the multitudes who resorted to him for help, nor with the illnesses which especially during the last part of his life unintentionally perfected and completed his earlier intentional asceticism. Of course, his asceticism has become known to us in spite of his deep humility, as it was apparent in the rest of his behavior. For one's behavior is the only firm foundation and seal of sanctity. Elder Paisios' wondrous life, which has been brought to light by Christ's love for His Church, exactingly followed the footsteps of the Saints of old in all its manifestations. These are complete obedience and the seizing of one's will at the start of the monastic life in a cenobitic monastery, complete asceticism and silence, the completion of prayer (as much as is humanly possible), the guidance of other souls and the institution of schools of virtue (monasteries), the spiritual education of spiritual guides embellished with gifts similar to his, the gift of clairvoyance and discernment, the gift of healing, the zealous defense of Orthodoxy against heresies and blasphemy, God-pleasing prayer for the whole world out of love (both for his earthly nation and every soul), the gift of consoling and of simplicity. In addition, in the general consciousness of the Church, even while he was still alive, he was considered a saint according to the example of the ancient ascetics. Finally, his life has been crowned by the world's general testimony to and love for him, which continues to increase despite the 17 years that have passed since his falling asleep. This is proof that God is informing the human heart, which while the love of many grows cold thirsts for love, understanding and support which does not wane.

Orthros 9:00am Hierarchical Divine Liturgy 10:30am Officiated by his Grace Bishop Sevastianos PAULETTE HIOS Paulette Hios was born in North Carolina, USA on February 18, 1943, to Mary P. and Peter Hios. Educated in the New York City School System, Paulette also received her professional diploma from the Brooklyn Conservatory of Music after 6 years of study on June 15, Serving in the capacity of Church Or- ganist and Choir Director, Paulette s talents were well received and greatly appreciated by all. Her efforts were hailed for its excellence by the Choir members and the Community. Paulette was awarded two scholarships: one from New York University and the other from the Hellenic University Scholarship Fund. After attending N.Y.U., her main ambition was to become a concert pianist or a music teacher. Ms. Hios re- cital credits include piano performances at Town Hall, Lincoln Center, Carnegie Recital Hall and Merkin Hall. Her radio credits include WQRS s Artists in Concert and Robert Sherman s Listening Room. Paulette also generously donated her time and talent to perform at Borough Hall for the Brooklyn Borough President s Women s History Month annual celebration. She was a member of NYU s Sigma Alpha Iota Music Fraternity and served as Recording Secretary of the Music Club. For many years, Paulette gave pri- vate piano lessons at her home and was a piano tutor at the Brooklyn Conservatory of Music. In 1978, Ms. Hios established the Belanthi Enterprises on Court Street. A true cultural center, Belanthi became home to a music school, an art gallery and a performance space. There she devoted her time to teaching mu- sic to students of all ages and levels. Paulette produced, presented and performed in many concerts at the Belanthi Center for the Arts, which became the home of the Vocal and Dramatic Arts Studio, headed by the Soprano, Teresa Schoendorf. Paulette Hios passed away at her home on January 22, It was her wish to write the icon of the Nativity above the choir loft where she sang the liturgy from for over 40 years. In coordination with icono- graphers Konstantinos and Stavroula Skordelis who are two faithful longtime members of our community, her wish came true in time for our 100th Year Anniversary in the Spring of We all miss her very much.
