Illinois has dropped 10 straight games, including an home loss to Iowa on Jan. 30, while the Hawkeyes have won three straight after a surprisingly slow start to conference play. Career Day: Sophomore All-America candidate Karisma Penn exploded for a career-high 33 points against No. 11 Michigan State on Sunday, marking the highest single-game point total in Big Ten games this season. She hit 14-of-21 from the field (67 percent) and also pulled down 11 rebounds against the Big Ten s, and one of the nation s, top team. Select Company: Penn is one of six players nationally and one of just two in a BCS conference that averages at least 18 points and 10 boards per game. The others are VCU s Courtney Hurt, Buffalo s Kourtney Brown, Ohio State s Jantel Lavender, Alabama State s Tanika Jackson and Xavier s Amber Harris. Freshman Impact: Illinois boasts three of the top six freshman scorers in the Big Ten. Redshirt freshman Amber Moore is third (8.5 ppg), while true freshmen Centrese McGee (6.0 ppg) and Alexis Burke (4.9 ppg) rank fourth and sixth, respectively. McGee, a 5-8 guard, leads all conference freshmen in rebounding (4.9) and is second in steals (1.3 spg), while Moore leads league rookies in FT percentage (.920) and is second in threes made (50) and third in assists (1.7 apg). Block Party: Penn needs five blocks to break Jenna Smith s single-season Illinois blocked shots record. After setting the UI freshman blocks mark with 57 last year, she has 66 rejections so far this season, which is second on the UI list behind only Smith s record of 70 in Penn s career total of 123 already ranks fifth all-time at Illinois and puts her on pace to break Smith s career mark of 231. Jock Jams: UI student-athletes are hosting the second annual Illini Jock Jams, a variety act/talent show featuring Illini athletic teams, on Wednesday, Feb. 23 at Huff Hall (7 pm). Since the Illini will be on their way to Iowa City during the show, the team taped an Orange and Navy music video that will be shown at the event. Look for it at later this week. Tickets to Jock Jams are $5 with proceeds going to local, national and international charities University of Illinois Women s Basketball Game Notes // 1

Sophomore Jaime Printy (15.4 ppg,.363 3FG%) leads the team in scoring and three-point shooting, while senior Kachine Alexander (14.1 ppg, 9.5 rpg) is one of the top all-around players in the conference. Juniors Kamille Wahlin (12.3 ppg, 49 3FGM) and Kelly Krei (9.3 ppg, 45 3FGM) are perimeter threats, while sophomore Morgan Johnson (10.7 ppg, 6.8 rpg, 2.4 bpg) patrols the paint. Thursday night s game will be senior night for Alexander and forward Kelsey Cermak. It will also be Break the Record Night, as Iowa needs 7,464 fans at the game to break the program s single-season attendance record. The Illinois-Iowa Series: Iowa owns a advantage over Illinois in the all-time series and has won six straight and 12 of the last 13 over the Illini. The Hawkeyes have been dominant in Iowa City, going 24-5 against the Illini there, including 22 of the last 24 since Illinois last win in the series was a victory at Carver-Hawkeye Arena on Feb. 15, Law Faces Alma Mater: Illinois head coach Jolette Law heads back to her alma mater for the third time as a head coach when the Illini travel to Iowa City. As the Hawkeyes point guard from , Law helped Iowa to four consecutive Big Ten titles. She was a two-time first-team All-Big Ten selection (1989 & 90) while playing for former Hawkeye coach and long time mentor C. Vivian Stringer. Law graduated from Iowa in 1990 with a degree in sports studies/corporate fitness. Karisma Penn led Illinois with 22 points, 12 rebounds, four steals and two blocks and Lydia McCully dished out nine assists to go along with 11 points in defeat. The game was close throughout until Iowa pulled away at the free throw line in the final two minutes. Illinois got within three with 2:09 remaining after five straight points from McCully brought the Illini within 68-65, but Iowa s Kelly Krei hit a dagger three-pointer on the ensuing possession to push the lead back to six. The Hawkeyes then hit 9-of-12 from the line in the final 1:21 to close it out. For the game, Iowa hit 8-of-12 from behind the arc and shot 52 percent overall. For the full box score from the 1/30 game, see page 26 CLOSE, BUT... The Illini have lost four games this season where the opponent has made a shot in the final 10 seconds with the game tied or Illinois leading. Take a look at Illinois buzzer-beating defeats: Dec. 8 at Oakland: Oakland s Bethany Watterworth hit a putback with 2.3 seconds left to give the Grizzlies a one-point lead, then Amber Moore s 35-footer at the buzzer rattled in and out in the OT loss. Jan. 9 vs. Northwestern: NU s Beth Marshall hit a three as time expired to send the game into overtime. In OT, Illinois missed two threes in the final seconds in the defeat. Jan. 27 vs Penn State: PSU s Julia Trogele scored the go-ahead bucket with 9.1 seconds left and then Illinois Lydia McCully missed the potential gametying shot at the buzzer in the loss. Feb. 3 at Northwestern: With Illinois leading 79-78, Northwestern s Amy Jaeschke hit a contested, turnaround, fall-away, 15-foot bank shot with 1.4 seconds left to give the Wildcats an win. PENN FILLING BIG SHOES Heading into the season, many wondered how the Illini would replace Jenna Smith, a three-time first team All-Big Ten selection and the school s all-time leader in points, rebounds and blocks. While Smith left some big shoes to fill, Illinois sophomore Karisma Penn has virtually matched Smith s numbers as a sophomore, when she was named an honorable mention All-American. That total also ranks fourth on the Illinois single-season double-doubles list. She has posted eight double-doubles during conference play, which also leads the league, and has 17 in her career. All-Around Player: Penn is the only player in the conference that ranks in the top-five in scoring, rebounding, blocks and steals this season. The Shaker Heights, Ohio, native is fourth in the conference in scoring (18.3 ppg), second in rebounding (10.3 rpg), second in blocks (2.4 bpg) and fifth in steals (2.1 spg), while also ranking sixth in FG percentage (.512). Climbing the Charts: Penn currently ranks second in the Big Ten and 24th in the nation in blocks (2.4 bpg) and is quickly climbing up the program s rejection lists. She is second on the UI single-season blocked shots list with 66, just four short of tying Jenna Smith s school record of 70, and is already fifth on the UI career list with 123, putting her on pace to break Smith s all-time mark of 231 swats. Penn POW: Penn picked up her third Big Ten Player of the Week honor of the season on Jan. 31 after averaging 21.5 points, 12.5 rebounds, 3.5 blocks and 3.0 steals in close losses to Penn State and #18 Iowa. She also won POW honors on Jan. 3 and Dec. 20, tying her for the second most POW honors in a season by an Illini. BOMBS AWAY! After sitting out last season with a torn ACL, redshirt freshman Amber Moore has had come back healthy and has been an explosive outside threat for the Illini this season. Moore has hit 29 threes during conference play (2.1 per game) to rank seventh in the Big Ten. She is averaging 10.0 ppg in Big Ten games, well above her average of 6.8 ppg in non-conference action. Her seven threes at Indiana on Jan. 13 equaled the second most in a game in school history behind only Katie Coleman s school-record of nine in 1997, and her 50 threes this season already put her in eighth place on the UI singleseason three-point field goals list. GOOD AS GODBOLD Sophomore Adrienne GodBold relishes her role coming off the bench and as a defensive stopper, especially as of late. In the last seven games, GodBold is averaging 10.0 points, 2.6 steals and 2.1 blocks per game has set or tied career-highs in all three categories within the last month (16 points and five steals at Michigan on 2/6, six blocks vs. PSU on 1/27, five steals vs. MSU on 2/20). She s also become one of the team s top threepoint threats, hitting.370 from behind the arc in Big Ten play, and ranks sixth in blocks per game during league play. McCULLY ON POINT Junior Lydia McCully has given the Illini excellent point guard play as of late, combining for 30 assists, nine steals and eight turnovers in five games from Jan. 30 to Feb. 13. Her 10 point, 11 assist, zero turnover game at Northwestern on Feb. 3 not only marked her first career double-double, but also is the second-highest assist total in a Big Ten game this season. She currently ranks fifth in assists overall (4.0 apg) and seventh in assist/ TO ratio (1.4) during conference games. CROATION SENSATION Stepping Up Junior forward Lana Rukavina exploded for a careerhigh 22 points at Northwestern on Feb. 3, shattering her previous high of 13. She hit 9-of-14 from the field, including a career-high two three-pointers, and also had a career-high three steals versus the Wildcats. In her first two seasons, Rukavina averaged just 1.0 points and 5.1 minutes per game while playing behind All- American Jenna Smith. This year, she has stepped up to start all 27 games and is averaging 5.7 points and 24.4 minutes per game. In the last five games, she averaging 9.0 points per game and is shooting.500 from behind the three-point line. Lana actually learned Croatian as a first language when she was little before mastering English. Lana s parents, Davor and Mirella, moved to the U.S. from Croatia in 1983 and each summer they take the family back to the Croatian coastline near the city of Zadar to visit over 20 family members that still live there. A psychology major, Lana hopes to return to her native land to play professionally after she earns her degree from Illinois. CONSISTENCY IS KEY Coach Jolette Law has used just three starting lineups this season. Lydia McCully, Eboni Mitchell, Centrese McGee, Karisma Penn and Lana Rukavina started the first 18 games for the Illini. For the Jan. 20 game against Ohio State, Amber Moore was inserted into the lineup in place of Mitchell and that remained for the next eight of the last nine games. The only exception was Feb. 13 at Purdue when Adrienne GodBold made her first start of the season in place of Moore. UPCOMING PROMOTIONS On Sunday, Feb. 27, the Illini will close the regular season by hosting Michigan at 2 p.m. It will be Bring-A-Buddy Day at Assembly Hall, as Illini Kids Club members can bring a guest to the game for free. It will also be Team Day (teams need to preregister by calling Shanna Diller at ). WHERE ARE THE SENIORS? Illinois is one of only seven Division I teams in the nation without a senior on its roster heading into the season, joining Maryland, Miami (Fla.), Murray State, Oral Roberts, Purdue and Rutgers. With the absence of senior leadership, Illini head coach Jolette Law has singled out redshirt junior Lydia McCully and sophomores Karisma Penn and Kersten Magrum as players who have stepped up as leaders this season. LAST TIME OUT: PENN GOES FOR 33 Karisma Penn scored 21 of her career-high 33 points in the second half and the Illini outscored 11th-ranked Michigan State after the intermission, but the hosts couldn t overcome a sluggish first half in a loss to the Spartans at Assembly Hall Sunday. Penn hit 14-of-21 from the field (67 percent) and 5-of-7 from the free throw line (71 percent) to eclipse her previous high of 30 points set against Cal Poly in November. The 33 points is the highest total by a player in a Big Ten game this season. The Shaker Heights, Ohio, native also added a game-high 11 rebounds, two steals and one block. The double-double is her Big Ten-leading 16th of the season. The Orange and Blue had six turnovers in the first 3:22 of the game and didn t get their first bucket until the 14:27 mark. Later in the half, Adrienne GodBold sparked a 7-0 run that pulled the Illini within 19-15, but MSU countered with a 13-2 run to push lead to 15 and eventually took a lead into halftime. In the second half, Illinois used a 10-2 run to get back within six, 45-39, with 13:52 remaining. However, the Spartans responded with a 9-0 run to push the lead back to 15 and the Illini would get no closer than nine the rest of the way. The game was Illinois fifth annual WBCA Pink Zone game, which raised funds and awareness for breast cancer research. The Illini wore pink uniforms and the Courtsiders booster club held a raffle featuring Illini merchandise to raise money toward finding a cure. FRESH FACES Four newcomers show up on the Fighting Illini roster this season, two players and two coaches. Jolette Law and staff welcome two freshman players to the squad in Centrese McGee (Calumet City, Ill.) and Alexis Burke (Bainbridge, Ga.), while redshirt freshman Amber Moore (Detroit, Mich.) is back in the mix after missing all but one game last season with a torn ACL. All three players have made a big impact early in the season as the three freshmen are combining to average 19.4 points and 9.8 rebounds per game thus far. ROAD WARRIORS The Fighting Illini played nine of their first 13 nonconference games away from home, logging over 15,000 miles of travel during November and December. Illinois made round trips to Honolulu (4,900 miles), Boulder, Colorado (1,000 miles), Columbia, South Carolina (750 miles), Rochester, Michigan (400 miles), Milwaukee (225 miles), Chicago (150 miles) and Peoria (90 miles) in a span of 37 days. MAGRUM OUT FOR SEASON It was announced on Jan. 19 that sophomore Kersten Magrum would miss the rest of the season due to a nagging foot injury. She had surgery on Nov. 10 in hopes of being healthy by the end of December, but had continued problems with the foot after coming back against Marquette on Dec. 21. Magrum saw action in three games during the first half of the season. She will apply for a medical hardship waiver, leaving her with three years of eligibility remaining starting next year. BIG TEN BACK TO 16 After playing 18 conference games for the last three years, the Big Ten has gone back to a 16 game schedule for That means each team will play six teams twice and four teams once during conference play. Illinois one-plays this year are Minnesota and Ohio State at home and Purdue and Wisconsin on the road. LAW ADDS WALK-ON Coach Jolette Law added walk-on Courtney Owens to the Fighting Illini roster in late November. Owens is a 5-10 sophomore guard from Oak Brook, Ill. She was a three-year starter at York High School, where she averaged 15 points and 12 rebounds as a senior in Owens suited up for the first time at Bradley on Nov. 19 and saw her first playing time on Nov. 22 vs. Cal Poly University of Illinois Women s Basketball Game Notes // 4

Sophomore Karisma Penn (21 points, seven rebounds, four blocks) had another impressive game for the Fighting Illini, but it wasn t enough to keep Indiana from earning a win. It marks the eighth consecutive loss for Illinois and ends a nine-game skid for the Hoosiers. Indiana led by 10 at halftime and never trailed in the second half, but Illinois certainly made a game out of it. The Illini used a 14-5 run to cut the Hoosier lead to with 8:08 left, however, IU countered with a quick 7-0 run to push the lead back to eight with 6:37 to play. Indiana later extended the lead to nine, 54-45, with 3:39 left but the Illini used a 7-1 run to get back within three in the final minute. IU s Whitney Lindsay hit all four of her free throws in the last 43 seconds to seal the win for the Hoosiers. Penn hit 14-of-21 from the field (67 percent) and 5-of-7 from the free throw line (71 percent) to eclipse her previous high of 30 points set against Cal Poly in November. The 33 points is the highest total by a player in a Big Ten game this season. In the second half, Illinois used a 10-2 run to get back within six, 45-39, with 13:52 remaining. However, the Spartans responded with a 9-0 run to push the lead back to 15 and the Illini would get no closer than nine the rest of the way.
