ΕΛΠΙ Α (Elpida), pronounced Elpitha and meaning HOPE, is the magazine of the Fund (GAWF). Founded in 1959, GAWF s mission is to bring about significant and lasting improvement relevant to the treatment and status of animals in Greece. We do this through co-operation and support for local Greek initiatives that will further this aim. The editor and GAWF Council do not necessarily agree with all views expressed in the magazine. Contributors/Thanks: Janet Eley, Elisa Geskou, Angela Humphery, Evgenia Mataragka, Carol McBeth, Sophie More, Sue Scrase, Rosie Scourti, Lucy Westmore Editor : Elizabeth Koubena Greek Translation: Amalia Koundouri Design: digitworks Council of Management Brian Cowie (Chair) Tara Economakis Lily Venizelou Malcolm Corner MRCVS Anna Stamatiou Head Office 1-2 Castle Lane, London SW1E 6DR Tel: +44 (0) Fax: +44 (0) Athens Office Zaloggou 13-15, Athens Tel/Fax (00 30) Mobile (00 30) The Fund Charity No A message from the Head of UK Operations Welcome to your new look Elpida. As you can see, this issue has been produced in full colour. By doing a little research, we have been able to bring the magazine to you in colour and on a more environmentally sound paper and still save money - simply by switching to a more cost effective printer. So you can now see our fabulous photographs in all their coloured glory. And the funds we save each time we produce the magazine will go straight back into our life saving work. We hope you enjoy the new look Elpida. In this issue you will find an article about fundraising and we hope it will encourage you to get involved and suggest your own ideas for raising money for the animals (page 24). And we encourage all of you budding photographers out there to enter our Christmas card photography competition (page3). Finally, please complete the enclosed questionnaire and send it back to us in the envelope provided. This will help us find out exactly what you want to see GAWF doing in the future and what you think our priorities should be. Highlights 3. Shame of Hydra GAWF would like someone to explain why residents on the island can tolerate the daily sight of sick and injured cats. A message from GAWF s Director in Greece Life with GAWF is always busy and packed full of various activities that keep Evgenia and I more than occupied. Sometimes we feel that there just aren t enough hours in one day to get everything done. As you will read in the Stop Circus Suffering Campaign article in this issue, it is obvious that, although circuses do not have the necessary licences to perform, they are still performing and local authorities and police are not enforcing the law. The only way forward is to lobby for a law banning circuses with performing animals. Evgenia has begun to contact a number of MPs and significantly she has already had 3 pledges of help from concerned MPs. Meanwhile, the GAWF education programme continues to inform children encouraging them to treat animals with justice and respect. Lately, during a class, one young boy told me that if we were kind to animals, and we all should be, that no animal would ever hurt us. Comments like this give me great hope for the future. Photography competition GAWF would like to invite you to enter our Christmas Card 2007 photography competition. We are looking for a photograph that captures the spirit of Greece and its animals and we invite both members and non-members to take part. Please send us your best photographs (these must be taken in Greece) by Friday 24th August. We have this lovely prize to give away to the winning photographer. Medasset (Mediterranean Association to save Sea Turtles), one of the groups GAWF awards an annual grant to, commissioned a solid silver turtle pendant as their good luck charm for The charm has been kindly donated by Anna Stamatiou, one of GAWF s Trustees. The winner will receive this beautiful pendant and their In January, Amalia and I travelled to Mytilini on the island of Lesvos where we carried out a neutering programme. Not only were the numbers of animals neutered high but Amalia also trained a local vet on the technique of flank spaying a female cat. The vet will continue the neutering programme to reduce the number of stray cats in Mytilini town. None of the above would have been possible without your help. We truly appreciate your continued support, and I am sure the animals in Greece do too. Thank you, Carol McBeth photograph will appear as one of GAWF s Christmas card designs for In 2006 we sold our Christmas cards to supporters all over the world so your talent could be showcased far and wide. Please take part and help us produce our best Christmas card ever. Don t forget to pack your camera when you go on holiday this year! Please note all photographs must be taken in Greece. It will not be possible to return photographs sent through the post. By entering this competition you are giving GAWF permission to publish your photograph in any of its publications. Deadline for all entries is 24th August, The Circus Flies The puppet theatre group, Wings of Myth, has produced a wonderful story that enchants children whilst they learn the truth about circuses with performing animals. The well made puppet models are all lifelike and the voices are all superb. The animal puppets, an elephant, a lion, a snake, a monkey, a young bear, a giraffe and a mouse are depicted as having a hard life full of suffering in the circus. The cruel ring master shouts and constantly whips them. Forced to do unnatural tricks, the poor animals are humiliated every day. The animals speak about their difficult life and how they would all like to escape and return to their natural environment. The monkey has been sent to the circus to rescue the snake and take him on a magic flying carpet back to his natural environment. Finally, she collects all the animals with the exception of the mouse and they escape from the circus on the magic carpet. The mouse stays to spread the word on circus cruelty and to help animals in other circuses. GAWF would like to congratulate the group on producing such an exceptional and heart warming story which will assist children to comprehend why circuses must not have performing animals. 26. 3 Exotics Campaign In December, GAWF launched a public awareness campaign exposing the suffering behind the exotic pet trade. Sadly, owning an exotic has become a fashion in Greece and it is now possible to buy iguanas, snakes, turtles, squirrels, tarantulas and even monkeys. GAWF believes that these creatures are wild and keeping them as pets in the name of fashion cannot be justified. It is estimated that 90% of wild caught exotics die before they even reach the pet shops. Even if they do survive, they are usually kept in unacceptable conditions before being sold to inexperienced owners. Few pet shop owners give correct advice to their customers regarding care resulting in even more suffering and death. Even if the owner recognises that their exotic is sick, it is highly unlikely that they will be able to find a vet in Greece who knows about health problems in exotics. The public are also unaware that when they buy wild caught exotics they can be carriers of zoonotic diseases e.g. reptiles with Salmonella and parrots with Psittacosis. Some of these creatures may be cheap to buy, but they are certainly not low maintenance. The Green Iguana, on sale for around 15 Euros, requires an expensive diet, a special tank with a heater and thermometer as well as UVA and UVB light. Tanks need to be replaced as the iguana grows and finally reaches its adult size of over 1 metre long. Owners and employees from the majority of pet shops surveyed in the Athens area advised that if iguanas were kept in small tanks, they would not grow very big!! Of course, the novelty of having an exotic often wears off and irresponsible owners then abandon these creatures. Iguanas are being found all over the country and recently someone on Crete found an iguana measuring over 1 metre up a tree. These wild creatures, not native to Greece, can cause irreparable damage to Greek wildlife and nature. Furthermore, with the permanent ban on wild caught birds for the pet trade, there is concern that the catchers will turn their attention to reptiles and other exotics resulting in even more imported exotics arriving in Greece. Pet Shop, Athens Εκστρατεία για τα εξωτικά ζώα Media coverage of the campaign launch was excellent with the press release appearing in national and local newspapers, radio interviews and TV interviews. Leaflets exposing the cruel trade have been distributed all over Greece. GAWF would like to thank the RSPCA for sponsoring this important campaign. Some of these creatures may be cheap to buy, but they are certainly not low maintenance. Επιπλέον, µετά τη µόνιµη απαγόρευση της εµπορίας άγριων πτηνών, υπάρχουν ανησυχίες ότι οι έµποροι θα στρέψουν την προσοχή τους στα ερπετά και άλλα εξωτικά ζώα και θα εισαχθούν Review: The Demon s Trial by J.C. Costa When I first encountered this new book by an author totally unknown to me I didn t know what to expect. A friend gave it me as present with the cryptic words: It s a little weird, but I think you will like it. The easiest way to explain the concept is to tell you the story. A young man, an animal welfare campaigner, falls downstairs in his office. He s concussed and when he comes round he feels that he has to write a book. He knows he won t do this if he stays in his London office so he packs his bag and sets off for the almost total isolation of a Scottish island. The place is magical and he is totally seduced by it. Staying in a very basic cottage he begins to write. Or does he? He is visited by ghosts, images from his past with whom he communes. Not the ghosts of humans but of animals who have crossed his path over the years. Like the pet dog he looked after as a child. He took the dog for walks, made sure it was fed, was kind, gentle and compassionate. One could not ask for more from any dog owner. But did the animal see it that way? Was this a happy, healthy pet or a captive, a creature made dependent on its owner? In the most startling episode in the book we encounter two monkeys. Mr Costa, (I am assuming this book is partly autobiographical), encounters a tourist couple in Latin America who have bought the monkeys and plan to take them back to the US. Costa persuades them to let him have the monkeys. He has rescued them. Now they appear in his Scottish hideaway and a strange and unsettling discourse occurs. One of the monkeys died very shortly after the rescue, the other was placed in a sanctuary. In their ghostly apparitions, their behaviour is markedly different. The one who died is friendly, the other hostile. As I read on I began to think I was in a courtroom. Costa is in effect on trial. His ghostly visitors are witness, jury and judge. The events described are not real, they come from a magical world deep in the subconscious. Yet through the fantasy, through this spirit world, reality is observed; and not only observed, but shown in all its complexity and contradiction. There are further twists that I won t give away; nor will I reveal the verdict of the jury. But I will advise you to buy this book. Costa had to come to terms with the reality of his own behaviour towards animals; in so doing he flirted with insanity. I don t think it will drive any reader mad but it will make you re-examine your own attitudes. My friend was right about it being a little weird but it s also compulsive reading. I only hope a second novel is in the pipeline. The Demon s Trial can be purchased online at: com/ By Lucy Westmore 04 ΕΛΠΙ Α Issue Twenty Two Spring 2007

GAWF Programmes are not just for Athens GAWF offers groups all over Greece the opportunity to participate in various practical programmes organised by GAWF. Areas where there are no practicing vets can benefit from visits where GAWF sets up a temporary surgery and strays are neutered. School programmes and First Aid Courses are also on offer to groups. The demand is high and Carol McBeth, Amalia Koundouri and Evgenia Mataragka travel all over Greece carrying out programmes for local groups. The following took place last autumn and winter. Poros First Aid Seminar/ Workshop In September, Carol McBeth spent two days on the island of Poros where she gave members of the Poros Animal Welfare Society (PAWS) a seminar/workshop on first aid. As there is no permanent small animal vet on the island, it is important that the volunteers on Poros have a sound knowledge of first aid. The delegates enjoyed the course and felt that they were better informed on how to evaluate sick/injured animals and carry out first aid procedures. Public Awareness and School Programme on Paxos In October, Evgenia visited Paxos where she gave a presentation to the school children followed by an evening presentation to the adults living on the island. In addition, she gave valuable advice to the new group working there. At the school, most of the children gave positive replies to animal related questions, they enjoyed watching the film that Evgenia showed and commented enthusiastically on the content of the film. A few children expressed their dislike of cats and Evgenia explained that animals are defenseless towards humans just like children and all they need is love, and basic care. In the evening, PAWS organised a presentation at the Municipal Conference Room, at which the Mayor of Paxos Mr. Spiros Bogdanos and all inhabitants of the island were invited to attend. There was a good response from the public, though mainly from foreigners living permanently on the island, but also some caring Greek people. Myconos children learn about animals In November, Carol and Evgenia spent 3 days on Myconos teaching children to treat animals with justice and respect. The children were all enthusiastic and eagerly participated in all the activities. It was obvious that many of them cared deeply about animals and some even understood the necessity of neutering to control the number of unwanted animals. In addition to the school programme, Carol and Evgenia were able to offer advice on various issues to the group working on the island. GAWF Neuters Eighty Animals on Lesvos In January, Amalia Kountouri and Carol McBeth spent a busy four days working in Mytilini on the island of Lesvos. The visit was organised by the local group, Animal Welfare Society of Lesvos (PAN). The group has a small centre comprised of kennels, a fully equipped veterinary surgery and a small office. Amalia spaying a cat The centre is not a shelter and only keeps dogs pre/post neutering and treats sick and injured strays. All strays are returned to their neighbourhoods where local people care for them. The group, all volunteers, had planned and prepared everything perfectly. There were a large number of cats waiting for surgery every day and volunteers on hand to help transfer the cats into the restrainer cages and assist with various other tasks. Maria Perou, a local vet (interested in learning how to spay cats with a flank incision), and Giassemi Kerengi, a final year vet student, received instruction and practical help from Amalia. By the end of the visit, Maria, who is a competent surgeon, had mastered the surgical skill of spaying cats with a flank incision. GAWF would like to thank all the volunteers and in particular Vaso and Sotiris for their marvellous hospitality. GAWF Helps Save Animals After Chalkidiki Fire The August fires on the Kassandra Peninsula on Chalkidiki destroyed 4000 hectares of pine forest and 3500 hectares of thinly wooded land and scrubland. Approximately 100 houses, and 2 hotels were also damaged or completely destroyed. Some 6,000 beehives and 35,000 olive trees were burnt to a cinder. As the fires raged, the TV coverage showed horrendous footage of the fires. GAWF took immediate action and spoke to all their contacts in the area offering assistance. Too late to save Julie Tsimakis informed us that a veterinary surgeon based in Chalkidiki was working day and night to help the badly injured farm animals. After speaking with the vet, GAWF sent emergency funding to help treat the victims, many of whom were suffering from serious burns and respiratory problems. Thanks to GAWF s speedy action and the vet s commitment, offering his services free and working long hours, 120 animals were saved. Sadly, most of the wildlife in the area, which included tortoises, snakes, jackals and birds, died in the fire. Their habitats and food sources were also completely destroyed. Stavros Kalpakis, President of the First Aid Station of the Hellenic Wildlife Hospital, spent days searching for wildlife casualties in need of help. Alas, the only life he found was some turtles in a small pond, no other wild creature had survived. Chalkidiki is on the route for many migrating birds. Following lobbying from GAWF and other groups, the forestry commission and local hunting union has agreed to ban hunting for a period of 3 months. At least, this is a small victory. We will continue to put pressure on, urging the authorities to ban hunting in the area for at least 1 year. Fireman, Miltiadis Kipouros, rescuing his own two puppies from his house which was completely burnt down.

Το GAWF στειρώνει ογδόντα ζώα στη Λέσβο My parents didn t want me to have a pet until the day I saw a tiny, all white puppy in a shop window. My brother and I fell in love with it! When we told our mum and dad about it they said that a puppy has a lot of needs and it was going to make a lot of mess in the house. We begged and begged and we promised that we would look after it until they accepted to have a look at it. So, two days later we went back to the shop with our mother to see it. It was still there. The girl there told us that people didn t buy it because it was the smallest and the weakest. That was it! The puppy joined our family! In the article reporting on the prize giving ceremonies for GAWF s annual competition, the photograph caption Section 2, 2nd Prize: Anna Kaltsa is incorrect. The correct caption is as below. We apologise for this mistake. Section 3, second prize: Sophia Hatzibirou It was a girl and she was very cute so I called her Sheba, like the queen! Slowly my parents changed their mind because they were happy to see my brother and me laughing all the time and playing with her. She was our baby! My mother held her in her arms when she was writing on the computer and my father thought she was funny because when she wanted to sleep she was always putting her nose into his slippers! We really had problems with her but not what our mum and dad said. When we moved to a new house, some neighbours called the police and wanted to send her away because it was unhealthy to keep a dog in our garden. My parents were the first to fight for her this time. They said they had to protect her as they would protect us. Sheba was one of us. Sheba has been with us for seven years now and she is still doing silly things! But we all love her very much and I wouldn t change her for another pet! Animals used for entertainment BEYOND THE STAGE Animals in circuses, zoos or parks may be fun; for instance, a performing tiger can be absolutely thrilling on stage, but what s happening backstage? How can animals perform all these impressive acts? Are performing animals happy? Student Catherine Tsiambera, from the 5th Jr High, Katerini, reports for GAWF magazine Elpida. Imagine you re at a circus with your family. You re watching a horse doing an amazing balancing act. How are you feeling-amazed, impressed, happy-or, perhaps, angry? If you answered amazed, happy, it is not surprising. Animals in circus are very popular not only in Greece but all over the civilized world. They are used and taught to do impressive acts and entertain the audience, usually under the menace of a knut and lack of food-as a punishment for misbehaviour. But, of course, there are not only the circuses. Zoos and places called natural parks are places where animals are used for entertainment. There are even wandering gypsies making poor bears and monkeys to perform on the streets! Let s take another scenario: In the circus, a young woman wearing a bright smile, approaches you, holding a baby lion in her hands. She asks you to be photographed along with the lion. Would you say No? If you said No, then you would do very well. Well, if your child (supposing you were an adult) insisted on being photographed with the baby lion, would you resist his begging eyes and refuse as well? Do you think that the baby lion is happy, when it is embraced and photographed all the time? What s more, baby animals are often separated from their parents, they are not well taken care of and what s even worse- they are kept in cages. Cages! Cage means prison. Have you ever thought of that? All these are just CRUELTY. Think of humans being used for entertainment. Isn t that cruelty? What can be done about this? First, the state has to realize the problem! Governments ought to ban all the animal troupe circuses and the natural parks should be used exclusively for the promotion of animal welfare. Of course, there are some activists already protesting and demonstrating. There are animal welfare societies who really care about animals and fight for their rights. However, we think that animal welfare education should enter the national curriculum so that the animal issues were more effectively coped with. We-Class C3- hope and dream of a society that values all living things: humans, animals and their environments and we promise to do our best! Class C3 campaigns for the solution of the problem of strays INFO of Vital Importance! According to the LAW (1197/1981, 3170/2003), it is illegal to : poison animals let a pet unaccompanied abandon pets leave pets dirt behind be cruel to a pet Don t hesitate to make offenders face the LAW! Call the POLICE! Write to the Mayor and ask for measures to be taken against offenders! Letters Dear Mayor, I am writing on behalf of my class to complain about the stray animals, mainly dogs, which we see everywhere in the city. To begin with, some of them look dehydrated and sick and it is obvious that they need help and special care. We wonder if they are vaccinated for contagious deseases. What s more, they wander in the squares, playgrounds and parks where children frequent and not only dirty the place but also scare the little kids. Some naughty children often beat them or pull their tails and we often hear that stray dogs bite children. This leads to cases of poisoning and the problem of the stray dogs results in a vicious circle. Is there anything that we, students, can do to help? I am looking forward to your reply. Yours sincerely, Helen Stefanides, Class C3. Dear Bishop and Reverend Father, We are writing to protest about a most inhumane behaviour of one of the church-wardens at St George s church in the area of Vatan in Katerini and ask for your immediate intervention. We were informed by ARGOS the local Animal Welfare Society, that the above mentioned church-warden destroyed the stork nest which used to house a couple of storks for years. The storks have been trying for days to build a new one but they are prevented by a wire fence with which he has surrounded the former site of the nest. He claims that a stork nest on top of the church is sacrilege! Storks are endangered species and above all, creatures of the same God. We really cannot understand how a faithful man and a servant of God can possibly act so cruelly. We would be grateful if you intervened immediately and stopped this cruelty. Yours sincerely, Helen Sismanidis, Student at 5th Gymnasyium 08 ΕΛΠΙ Α Issue Twenty Two Spring 2007

Stop Circus Suffering Campaign Autumn and Winter Action GAWF and the groups participating in the campaign continue to put pressure on municipalities where circuses have been performing. One thing is certain, it has not been an easy ride for the circuses and the campaigning groups have made the circuses lives a nightmare. These Italian circuses with their miserable and tormented animals may think twice about returning to Greece. As the word spreads and the public become more aware, it is inevitable that fewer people will attend these performances where animals are degraded and tortured. September Thrakimakidonas An unlicensed circus performed for ten days. In spite of pressure put on the municipality and police to take action, none was taken. Corinth It is unbelievable that after the pressure put on the municipality, and especially Mr Thomas Thomaidis, Mayor of Corinth, that he actually granted yet another licence to a visiting circus with performing animals. Mr Thomaidis appears to condone cruelty and the suffering of animals in circuses. Can anyone tell us why? October Efkapria Although the animal welfare societies have been campaigning against circuses performing in Efkarpia for years, the municipality continues to issue visiting circuses with licenses. No matter how strong the opposition from all the societies and groups, the mayor has ignored everything and has allowed cruelty and suffering to continue. It seems that he doesn t care if animals are suffering. Can anyone explain why? Syros Congratulations, Dance Group on Syros. On 23rd October, 2006 the Mondi Circus arrived on Syros. In spite of two animal groups working on the island, it was a dance group that lobbied and campaigned against the circus. The group organised a demonstration outside the circus and collected signatures which were given to the Mayor. One of the members, Natalia Athanasiadou, met with the Mayor, Dimitris Roussos, and asked him not to issue a license. Although the circus was unable to obtain the correct paperwork, they still held performances every day. December / January Athens The arrival of Circus Mundial was made known to us by the hundreds of posters littering public bridges and columns all around Athens informing their prospective viewers that performances would start at Olympic Properties, in Moshato area on the 15th December. Immediately, all the members of the Stop Circus Suffering coalition leapt into action, sending letters of complaint to both Moshato municipality and Olympic Properties (OP). Olympic Properties was asked to revoke the license that had been granted by them to the circus and evict the circus. From the very beginning, the municipality refused to acknowledge any involvement claiming that only OP had the responsibility in that area because of the 3342 /2005 law. However, the Presidential Decree Number 12 states that a license must be granted by municipalities before they can perform. We asked the municipality if they would be providing the circus with the appropriate license and they sent a fax stating that they were not going to, repeating the OP story line. Meanwhile all attempts to make contact with the responsible people at OP were ignored. Information as well as the Stop Circus Suffering DVD was sent to the President of OA, Mr. Hatziemmanouil. We pressured them on a daily basis with telephone calls and faxes. On Friday, the 22nd December, early in the morning Evgenia Mataragka (GAWF) and Roza Minakouli (POFYZO) went to the circus where, along with 2 of the circus representatives, they were interviewed by MEGA channel. In the evening of the same day a demonstration was held outside the circus. Although it was a very cold evening, many representatives from both animal and ecological societies gathered to express their disgust and loathing of the cruelty perpetrated towards circus animals. Leaflets were handed out and the demonstrators spoke with families going to the performance. SKY TV covered the demonstration interviewing some of the participants. This exposure gave us another opportunity to expose the humiliation and suffering endured by the animals in circuses. Further action included correspondence with the Athens Prefecture, Ministry of Development, Ministry of Finance and Veterinary Department. All replies confirmed that the circus required a license from the municipality. Complaints to the Moshato police were all disregarded with the excuse that a circus performing without a license was not something they considered an important matter. After contacting the local MP to complain, the chief of police was more cooperative. Readers can imagine how frustrating the campaigners felt. How on earth can something which is against the law continue without any action being taken? Undeterred by this lack of action, Evgenia contacted the Citizens Advice Bureau regarding the municipality s lack of enforcing the law. At last, some positive results and the Citizens Advice Bureau is putting pressure on the municipality to justify why the law is not being enforced. At the beginning of January, another demonstration was organised outside the offices of OP. Permission was refused for representatives to hand over a prepared letter to the president of OA. In fact, no official would accept the letter and the campaigners were informed that they should leave the letter with the janitor. A note was left with the letter complaining of their disregard and total indifference to whatever the groups were trying to say. The demonstration was covered by a number of journalists as well as Sky TV. Towards the end of January, GAWF received a report that the circus was polluting the sea with their rubbish. Evgenia sprang into action immediately and this time actually managed to make contact with an official at OP. The outcome was positive and OP finally made the decision to revoke the license. Without a license, you would think that this would be the end of the story, but no it s not! The circus continued to perform, more rubbish finding its way into the sea; the animals continued to be forced to do their unnatural tricks, beaten and humiliated for the sake of entertainment. The most absurd thing is that the circus has had the audacity to sue OP for breach of contract. We will, of course, continue our campaign to stop this circus performing. January/February Crete The Circus di Praga performed in Chania and in Moires without a license. Local action by Kerenza Blastou and Yiannis Yiannoutsos made life difficult for the circus while the coalition groups bombarded the municipalities with faxes and letters. GAWF received a disturbing report concerning tigers that were shaking with fear and urinating during their performance. What more evidence do we need? These cruel shows must be stopped and the coalition is determined to succeed. Other News Everything is not doom and gloom and there have been many positive achievements. GAWF believes the only way to put an end to these travelling circuses is to campaign for a law banning all circuses with performing animals in Greece. Evgenia has contacted a number of MP s and, to date, GAWF has received encouraging news from three interested MP s. A report has been submitted to Parliament asking for the government to pass a law banning circuses with performing animals. How on earth can something which is against the law continue without any action being taken? The media has been very supportive and articles have appeared in many newspapers, in particular, Elefterotypia and the TV magazine Telerama. The Make money for GAWF while you shop article in Telerama included information on our petition campaign and GAWF was inundated with requests for petition forms from concerned members of the public. There is no doubt that we have a long and difficult road ahead, but GAWF is determined that circuses with performing animals will eventually be banned in Greece. 7 Chinese Delegation Meet with Carol McBeth In June 2006, a delegation of officials from the Beijing Olympic Committee visited Athens for three days to learn what measures were taken with the street dogs during the Olympics in Carol McBeth, GAWF s Director in Greece met with them on 28th June. During the 2 hour meeting, Carol gave them an overview of the situation in Athens before and during the Olympics. She outlined the programmes implemented by the Athens Municipality and the financial assistance which had been made available from the Ministry of Agriculture and the Athens Organising Committee. She stressed that every country was different and that she was aware that Beijing did not have a huge number of strays. She said that obviously the world media would be focused on Beijing and the organising committee would find that animal activists would use the opportunity to raise animal welfare problems in China. In particular, farming bears for bile production and manufacturing of fur coats and soft animal toys made from dog and cat fur would become major issues. Carol was thanked and presented with two beautiful commemorative Beijing 2008 Olympic Medals. Can you spare a few hours to help us with street collections in the London Victoria area? Come along and meet other like-minded people and then join us back at our office afterwards for a coffee and a chat. Please contact us in the London office if you would like to help. 12 ΕΛΠΙ Α Issue Twenty Two Spring 2007

A week in the life Lucy Westmore joined GAWF as Head of UK Operations last summer. She has worked in animal welfare for more than ten years specialising in campaigning and hands-on wildlife rehabilitation. Lucy s first introduction to animals in Greece was when she spent a short time living on the island of Rhodes in 1995 and she always hoped to work for an organisation dedicated to helping the animals of Greece so when the job with GAWF came up, she jumped at the chance. It is really positive that the Municipality has taken this step. I spent the afternoon at the offices of Medasset (Mediterranean Society for the Protection of Sea Turtles) and was warmly welcomed by the staff. Medasset does some very important work in the field of conservation and animal welfare and focuses on the endangered sea turtle (Caretta caretta) living on the island of Zakynthos. GAWF gives funds to Medasset to enable the organisation to continue their vital work. This evening we went to another night school and Carol spoke to two classes about our work. It is common for Carol to visit 2-3 night schools each week. Thursday 2nd November Much warmer today. Evgenia and I began the day with an early morning trip to the National Gardens in search of hungry cats. We didn t have to look far Evgenia called and the cats came running. In all we fed around 8 groups of cats and a couple of individuals and they were very pleased to see us or was that the food? Here Lucy shares with you her observations from her first trip to Athens at the end of last year and reports on a typical week in the lives of GAWF s Director in Greece, Carol McBeth and her assistant, Evgenia Mataragka. Saturday 28th October Carol and I flew in from Slovenia this evening having attended a very useful conference the 8th International Companion Animal Welfare Conference. No sooner did we arrive at Carol s apartment, we headed out before dark to see whether we could find any of the protected street dogs in the area. We were in luck. In a small shopping centre, we found companions Lena and Chocolate two very friendly (and a bit on the heavy side!) street dogs. Just around the corner we met Laura and Othello and later Ksenia and Rex. It was lovely to see the companionship between the dogs under these circumstances it seems that a couple or a group bond for life. That wasn t so of the infamous Nellie however we found her a little later on her own and in a very bad mood. As we approached it became clear that Nellie was tied to a lamppost and being rubbed down. As we got closer, we could smell Nellie and it really wasn t pleasant! Although she was a bit grumpy, Nellie was actually being cared for. Again, she is a protected street dog and she had rolled in something rather pungent so a kindly local resident was holding her nose and cleaning Nellie up. No doubt Nellie, who has taken to sleeping in a nearby bank vestibule when the shops she is welcomed into during the day close, will thank her later. Monday 30th October My first day working with Carol in Athens. One thing I hadn t anticipated when packing my suitcase was torrential and constant rain in Athens! As a result, I spent all day soaked through and made a mental note to always be prepared. The day started with a visit to a small dog shelter funded by GAWF. The shelter was at the foot of the mountain at Argyroupoli and we arrived to some very excited barks. The dogs are all strays rescued from the surrounding neighbourhood and each is neutered and vaccinated, has a warm kennel, food and water, love and attention and a long daily walk. Christiana, the volunteer taking care of the dogs, told me that they are all found loving homes - whether in Greece or abroad. The next stop was the office where Evgenia was hard at work after being informed that there was a circus in the area. Having put plans in motion for tackling the arrival of the circus we popped out to meet Amalia, a vet who has been working with GAWF for around 11 years. Amalia is a dedicated animal welfarist and has neutered numerous cats on the island of Sifnos completely free of charge. She also helps GAWF immensely by offering subsidised and often free neutering of strays. Next on the agenda was a visit to a night school that teaches English as a foreign language (frontisterio) where Carol spoke to five classes ranging in age from 6 to 14 years. Each group had a different level of understanding and therefore Carol tailored the presentations and work to each. The younger students were given a slide show and easy animal welfare related exercises to complete while the higher level students were shown a video and set more complex tasks such as discussing and reasoning. I was extremely impressed when I heard one young lady, Athina, remark during discussions that We are all animals but we humans are the worst kind. We must show animals respect. The GAWF education programme is clearly working wonders. Tuesday 31st October It s still raining in fact, it hasn t stopped! Today Evgenia took me to meet Anna Makri who is a vet and the Director of the Athens Municipality stray programme. This was an interesting meeting and thanks to Evgenia s translating skills I learnt of the work Anna and her team are undertaking together to tackle the stray dog problem in the city. Anna estimated that there are at least 2500 stray dogs living in the city and of those, her department has successfully managed to vaccinate, neuter and treat a large number of these dogs since the programme started in 2003 prior to the Olympics. The Medasset Team Wednesday 1st November Bright sunshine and blue skies that s more like it! Today was spent working hard in the office (although Evgenia did take a short break to feed the pigeons through the window!). The phone in the Athens office doesn t stop ringing whether it is someone calling to report a circus in their area or a group needing help or advice Carol and Evgenia have the patience and expertise to deal with all calls calmly and appropriately in order to help and give the caller practical solutions. This evening we travelled to Glyfada for an important meeting organised by Mr Mavroleas, an environmentalist who has become interested in animal welfare. The group meets regularly and discusses different animal welfare issues with a view to finding actions and solutions. Tonight we discussed the issue of pet We are all animals but we humans are the worst kind. We must show animals respect. shops particularly in light of a horrendous fire that broke out the previous week killing 1500 birds and animals. There is clearly a lot to do in this area and others and the group which consists of local group representatives will no doubt work to achieve the common goal of promoting animal welfare in Greece. With advancing years and diminishing shelf-space, a confirmed Hellenophile and long time GAWF member Ron Plowman is selling part of his Greek-orientated library (English language) by sealed bid auction. All proceeds will come to GAWF. The collection includes some valuable items such as a Pausanius, Taylor translation, second edition 1824 in three volumes, and the odd curiosity like the Oxbridge Hellenic Travellers Club privately printed Proceedings of The deadline for bidding is 1st June, 2007 and we will acknowledge all entries after the closing date. Successful bidders will be advised and contacted to discuss payment. We met cats of all shapes, sizes and colours and intellect!! One cat called Carlos seemed so intent on us making a fuss of him that he nearly missed all the food. Luckily Evgenia makes sure there is plenty to go around. The vast majority of the cats in the gardens have been caught, neutered and released and GAWF has been heavily involved with this work. From here we went to meet a vet called Poppy Marouli, a vibrant lady who participates in the subsidised neutering scheme with GAWF. Later in the morning we headed west to Nea Philadelphia to meet with another group funded by GAWF, The Welfare Society. A full list of the books on offer (some 110 items) and a form which enables you to bid can be downloaded from the homepage of our website ww.gawf.org.uk. Alternatively if you would like us to post this to you please send a Postal Order for 3.50 payable to Greek Animal Welfare Fund to: Mr. Ron Plowman 17 Kingswood Road Bromley, BR2 0HG Telephone: Please do take part in the auction and help us to raise funds. 9 We were greeted by a very lively dog a really happy soul who jumped all over us. Later we found that he was the unfortunate victim of neglect he had been found months earlier wandering the streets with a thick, rusty chain embedded so deeply into his neck that it was barely visible. Thanks to the superior skills of the society s vet, Adamandios, the dog, (called Sugar) has made a full recovery and seems extremely grateful to his saviour. Friday 3rd November Carol and I travelled to Markopoulo to KAZ shelter to meet with Fifi Marcou, a lady who has been involved with animal welfare in Greece for twenty years and is the president of the society. The society operates on a catch, neuter and rehome policy and is currently caring for approximately 30 dogs. The dogs are treated and then homes are found for them - usually in Greece, Germany or Austria. It really has been an amazing week I ve learnt so much and can return to the UK with a far greater understanding of the fantastic work our staff in Greece do but before I do that, I will be meeting with our equine team. I have to say, I am really looking forward to a lie in tomorrow! Thursday 9th November The last few days have been spent with the equine team (see page 17 for a full account) but sadly, my journey has come to an end and it s off to the bus station for a 5 hour ride back to the airport. Reluctantly, I head back to the hustle and bustle of London. But there are two people I am very much looking forward to seeing the wonderful Sue and Cheryl in the London office the people who hold everything together behind the scenes. I have thoroughly enjoyed my time in Greece and feel privileged to have met so many wonderful, animal loving people who have invited me into their lives and shown me that it is absolutely possible to improve the lives of animals in Greece. Whilst the vital work in Greece continues, we in London will continue with our side that being the fundraising, membership outreach, accounting, administration and campaigning to mention but a handful of our tasks. I know it will be easier for me to do my job in London now that I have such a clear understanding of the way things work in Greece. My conclusion is that I am part of an organisation which makes a difference. Animal welfare in Greece has moved on in leaps and bounds over the past years and things are only getting better. As always, we would all like to thank you for your continuing support without you we couldn t do what we do. I hope that this short report has given you an even deeper insight into the important work GAWF and the societies we fund do. I would like to finish by telling you that it is clear that there is more to be done but rest assured, you are a very important part of a very worthwhile organisation and on your behalf, we will continue to bring hope and help to the wonderful animals of Greece. Commission Mission Report published after a visit to Greece earlier this year shows that Greece continues to breach animal protection laws regarding transport and slaughter. The overall conclusion states: There has been little progress in the implementation of the actions proposed by CCA. Although staffing levels are a problem, this does not account for the overall level of ineffectiveness of the control system. Apart from the limited effect produced by visits by the CCA s Inspection and Control Directorate, the CCA has been unable to ensure an overall effective and appropriate level of control, with certain local CAs continuing to give no priority to these issues. In relation to the transport of animals, the quality of the checks still remains insufficient. Even where deficiencies were detected, these have never been followed up by written warnings or sanctions as indicated in the CCA action plan. Furthermore, deficiencies were not reported to the CCA, as required by EU legislation and as indicated in the CCA action plan. In relation to animal welfare at slaughter, there was a wide variation in standards and actions taken, with some local CAs providing a completely unacceptable level of control. CA= Competent Authority CCA= Commission Competent Authority Following the damning report, the Commission has decided to take further action in the framework of an infringement procedure. Helping equines all over Greece By Lucy Westmore On the evening of 6th November, 2006 I met GAWF s equine team at Athens airport where we picked up a hire car and drove through the night to our destination beautiful Pertouli in the North of Greece. Pertouli is high up in the mountains but our first visit took us down into the forest to find a group of working mules waiting for us. A mule is a cross between a female horse and a male donkey and is an impressively powerful animal. The mules move large logs and trees up and down the mountains and therefore it is of great importance that they are in the best possible health. The team got to work condition scoring the animals, worming them and then trimming their feet and rasping their teeth. GAWF s farrier John removed the mules shoes and cleared the sole of the hoof from mud and dung. If these materials are not removed debris can become trapped between the sole of the foot and the shoe and the warm airless condition allows bacteria to multiply leading to infection of the frog (found on the underside of the hoof). It is important for working equines to be shod but the Before - extremely overgrown hooves After - being treated by the team shoes these mules were wearing were not appropriate. Rather than the typical horseshoe style shoe we are used to in the UK, which allow the feet to breathe, these shoes are solid metal plates covering the entire sole and frog. John explained to the owners that these shoes were not suitable because they had no grip on the underside which could cause the animal to slip and also, because they cover the entire sole, infection is highly likely. It is equally necessary that the teeth are regularly checked. As equines grind their food, the edges of the teeth become sharp and can damage the inside of the mouth. GAWF s equine dentist Garry started by opening the animals mouths and feeling their teeth for sharp edges. Most had sharp enamel points on their cheek teeth that needed rasping off. A rasp resembles a large metal nail file rough on one side and smooth on the other so as not to damage the cheek or tongue - and is inserted into the mouth and moved backwards and forwards in a steady motion until the teeth feel smooth. Occasionally teeth will need to be trimmed and in Pertouli we found a horse with a couple of exceptionally long teeth. These were clipped off and then filed until smooth. The teeth of equines should be checked several times a year. During day two, high up on a mountain we met a very nervous horse with severely overgrown front and back hooves. The team s first job was to win the confidence of this poor animal so that they could treat it. As I looked on from a distance, I watched them quietly talking to the animal. In no time at all a bond was formed and they were able to lift its foot and get to work. By this time the team had attracted a lot of attention and had an eager and interested crowd looking on. Having been successfully trimmed, the horse s feet needed to be bandaged and the team needed to give some oral medication for this they needed some bread and sugar. Some of the assembled crowd were young lads on bicycles they had stopped riding around and were transfixed by the team s work. As soon as they knew bread and sugar were needed they sped off home without hesitation to get the supplies and returned in a matter of minutes. The treatment was a success and the horse was led off to rest with instructions for the owner on how to continue the care. I found the work of the team inspiring they use their expertise not only to treat animals in need but by spreading the word as they go, they teach equine owners how to care for the animals themselves which makes this a truly sustainable project. The equine team held a small conference on Crete in March 2007 and GAWF funded travel for 20 Greek farriers, vets and dentists so that they could attend and improve their practical skills. Also in attendance were welfare workers who have rescued donkeys wishing to learn more about veterinary nursing of equines. The conference offered one to one equine care training to the delegates and enabled them to take the skills they learned back to their local communities and train others so that the best possible standard of care is afforded to working equines throughout Greece. 16 ΕΛΠΙ Α Issue Twenty Two Spring 2007

Interviewing the expert Lucy Westmore talks to Janet Eley, GAWF s Equine Project Coordinator LW - How long has GAWF s Equine Project been running? JE - Officially, since However, I have been involved with caring for Equines in Greece for 12 years. LW - What is the Equine Project s greatest achievement? JE I think the fact that the equine owners want to care for their animals because they see the benefits is our greatest achievement. It took many years for us to gain their confidence but now that we have, they can see the benefits in caring for their animals. They realise that a healthy animal will be with them for many years to come. LW What s the most difficult treatment you have had to perform? JE We were asked to treat a foal with a fractured leg. This sort of procedure is fairly straight forward when working from a pristine clinic with all of the tools needed but out in the field, in unbearable heat and having to make do with anything that comes to hand it s a different story. In order to splint the leg we had to remove some guttering from a nearby house and break this down to size. The procedure took a while but eventually we were all able to stand back and admire our handiwork! Another case was a donkey with lots of wire tangled around its legs. The wire had actually penetrated the skin and there was a lot of granulation tissue. We had to make many incisions to remove the wire. Again, this was all done in a makeshift clinic (well, a blanket on the floor!) where we managed to sedate the donkey. One of the most difficult things we find is that these cases seem to come to our attention on the last day of our trip and the animals we attend to often need care for a few days after their treatment. On this occasion we were very lucky to find a local farrier who took the donkey home and redressed its leg over the following week. LW What s your overall aim? JE To work ourselves out of a job! I think we d all like to see equine vets and farriers trained in dentistry and farriery all over Greece running the programme themselves many of the people we meet really want to learn the skills to do this. Of course, we would still be on hand for difficult cases but the bulk of the work can be carried out by Greek vets and the equine owners themselves. Unfortunately few Greek vets are currently willing to treat equines but the situation is improving. It is so Equine News In October 2006, GAWF s Equine team visited Pertouli, Trikala and Larissa in mainland Greece as well as the island of Lesvos. The team met mule and donkey owners who were very interested in learning more about farriery and as a result, they were invited to GAWF s seminar in March on Crete. We wanted to offer alternatives to the traditional heavy wooden pack saddles used for donkey rides in Greece so Judy Merrick, a saddler, demonstrated a variety of saddles and saddle fitting to donkey owners on Lindos. We intend to keep a close eye on the situation and to continue giving help and support in this area. heartening to see people showing such enthusiasm to train and learn to do the work themselves. LW How do you feel after a trip? JE Utterly exhausted! This is tough physical work and we see anywhere between 20 and 30 animals a day. Travelling around and working in the heat of summer can be quite unpleasant too. But we also feel exhilarated. On the plane on the way home from each trip we always discuss our high and low points and our special case of the trip. While the trips are always worthwhile there is always one case that stands out from the rest and we go away thinking that our visit might just have saved that animal s life. John Fairgrieve, our farrier and Andy Cross, our dentist treated 50 animals at a rescue centre on Corfu and gave training to Spiros Nutsis who also attended the practical seminars on Crete in March. Elisa Geskou gave advice on the care and management of the Skyros ponies at the Agricultural College in Thessaloniki. A lady in Chalkidiki asked for help with several donkeys she had rescued and Elisa and Giannis were able to visit and provide veterinary, dental and farriery treatments as well as giving advice on their daily management. Sheep on Lesvos get a helping hand. There are 300,000 sheep on Lesvos and during our last visit we discussed problems at lambing time with Yoita Petrithou and compared treatments for various conditions. Ewes in late pregnancy often have prolapses, which are traditionally replaced and sutured but the stitches are uncomfortable and have to be removed when the ewe commences labour. In the UK we use a type of truss or harness to keep the prolapse in place so the ewe does not have to be sutured. We sent two of these harnesses out to Lesvos for Yoita and Stratis to try on their sheep and we hope they will be of great use and a good alternative to stitches. Finally, it is clear that the farmers on Lesvos are open to new ideas - as Yoita found out after she had described her day working with Texel sheep in Shropshire. One dedicated farmer even went to the trouble of individually trimming each of his sheep s tails with scissors after hearing this was a common practice in the UK. We are very fortunate to have electric clippers for this job but greatly admire this man s efforts to keep his sheep clean and healthy! Living a better life About a year ago, the welfare group Filozoikos Omilos Karditsas in Karditsa asked GAWF for help and advice on two donkeys that they had saved. Hrysanthi, one of the donkeys, had a bad abscess under the jaw that wouldn t heal no matter what they tried. Hrysanthi couldn t eat properly and was in a bad body condition. After our vet s visit and a lot of care from members of the welfare group, Hrysanthi is completely healthy today and lives together with Fotis, accepting the love and care of the school children that come to visit and ride them. Donkey Sanctuary News In December 2006, two donkeys that were saved in Grammatiko in Athens, through the Wildlife Care Association, were transported to the Donkey Sanctuary in Trikala. Irma and Pappous arrived in a terrible body condition, with various problems, very weak and miserable, so much so that we believed they wouldn t survive. However, little by little, they have started putting on weight they enjoy eating so much! Our farrier trimmed and reshaped Pappous unbelievably long and distorted hooves, and he can now walk better. Everything shows that the two donkeys are adapting to their new environment, where they can live happily in their retirement. Animal welfare friendly events in your area Last December GAWF attended Animal Aid s Christmas Without Cruelty Fayre in Kensington. We had a large exhibition area which attracted many people all seeking advice on animal welfare issues in Greece. A vast number of people visit Greece each year and it is so important for GAWF to have a public presence so that we can advise and help people with queries which in turn benefit the animals. The day was a great success and we signed up new members, received donations, ran a prize draw, sold goods and gave out lots of literature. A special thanks is extended to the ethical companies who donated gifts for our prize draw: Saaf Skincare Honesty Cosmetics Lush Yaoh Essential Spirit The Booja Booja Company We would like to attend more events similar to this in 2007 and beyond in order to raise our profile. If there is a show in your area you would like to attend on behalf of GAWF, please get in touch. We can provide you with leaflets, banners, posters, collection tins etc. If you would like to volunteer to help GAWF staff run exhibition stands in London, Bristol and Windsor, please contact us. 18 ΕΛΠΙ Α Issue Twenty Two Spring 2007

The Shame of Hydra The island of Hydra is located in the Saronic Gulf. Guide books describe this small island as paradise with its imposing Venetian mansions, small attractive houses and natural beauty. Cars and motor bikes are not allowed on the island and it is said that the first impression one gets is that the island has not seen much change over the past couple of centuries. But is Hydra a paradise? Well, if you are in any way concerned about cats, it is a nightmare. The island is full of sick cats and kittens. There is no escaping from the sight of emaciated cats scavenging in rubbish bins or the sad faces begging for food at taverna tables. GAWF and Friends of the Cat have been aware of the problems for years and have tried unsuccessfully to establish a volunteer network on the island willing to assist and organise neutering programmes. Although it is difficult to understand, it appears that the residents on Hydra can live with and accept the suffering endured by these Feeding time for the healthy cats on Poros poor cats. Last year, we received numerous distressing reports from visitors describing the horrific and unacceptable misery they had witnessed (see letters page Daryn). Two Poros cats with a friend Neutered healthy stray cat on Poros Sick and miserable kittens on Hydra In addition, an internet forum on Hydra addresses the problems and the following are just two examples of some of the distressing mails: I made friends with a young kitty whose paws were rotting off, and her face was covered with sores. I treated her the 2 days I was there with medicines from the druggist, including oral antibiotics. She was docile and very sweet during these ministrations. She knew I was trying to help. There was said to be a man who tried to help the cats. I left money for him, hoping it would go for the kitty s treatment to continue. She was so hungry, as they all seemed to be. I don t understand how people with plenty do not look after their animals. My husband and I were in Hydra last October and one day we counted no less than 32 cats scavenging for scraps on a small heap of rubbish bags outside the Hydra school. We were saddened and felt helpless that most of them would probably starve or be poisoned before the winter. Of all the places we visited, Hydra was the worst island for stray, diseased cats. Determined to have another attempt at organising a programme, Carol McBeth visited the island in October. Her first stop was to meet with the local vet to ask for permission to carry out a neutering programme. The vet, Dimitris Mavraganis, was very open-minded and was willing to have GAWF on the island. There is a local man, Takis, who has been feeding strays on the island for many years and who has been totally against neutering. When told about the numerous tourist reports, he replied that when cats live outside, you can t expect them to be healthy! Takis took Carol to see the colony of cats that he feeds every day. What a shocking and distressful sight all young cats with upper respiratory problems or diarrhoea or just sitting miserably on walls obviously sick. When neutering was discussed, he finally reluctantly agreed that he would accept neutering and perhaps it might help control the numbers. Although representatives from the municipality were keen to assist, they were unable to offer suitable premises that could be used as a temporary surgery. After speaking with a number of people, Carol was told that a new animal welfare society was being formed on the island. The responsible person, Kelsey ----was too busy to meet and it was arranged that contact would be made by . At last, it looked as if the cats of Hydra might have a brighter future. Sadly, this was not the case. After communicating with Kelsey and arranging a weekend programme, Carol received an informing her that the Wild Caught Birds for the Pet Trade After years of campaigning by animal welfare groups all over Europe, the European Commission has banned the import of wild caught birds for the pet trade. Until fifteen months ago, when a temporary ban was introduced as a precautionary measure against bird flu, an average 1.7 million wild caught birds were imported into Europe annually. It is estimated that around sixty percent of these birds died before they even reached the pet shop. This high mortality rate was due to inhumane capture and forced feeding. Large numbers of birds were also crammed into boxes with many of them dying during transportation to European Countries. In November, Eurogroup for Animals produced lobbying postcards in various languages addressed to Markos Kyprianou, the Commissioner for Health and Consumer Protection. GAWF played an active role in helping to achieve the ban on this cruel trade by distributing hundreds of postcards, which were signed and collected and sent to the commissioner. Lobbying in Brussels Battery cages can only be described as inhumane. The floor space allowed per hen is less than the size of an A4 piece of paper. Hens are unable to stretch and are unable to carry out their natural behaviour. This severe restriction of movement in the cage also leads to severe osteoporosis and many battery hens suffer from fractures. Scientific research has established that hens have powerful drives to lay their eggs in a nest, peck and scratch at the ground, dust-bathe and perch. All these are impossible in a barren, overcrowded battery cage. The 1999 Laying Hens Directive bans conventional battery cages for egg laying hens as from Pressure from the egg producers is threatening the Directive. The Directive requires the cage ban to be reviewed before it comes into force. This review was due to take place in November. The European Coalition for Farm Animals (ECFA) organised a two day lobbying programme in Brussels. At the beginning of November, group did not want help from GAWF and would use the local vet for neutering. It appears that this fledgling group doesn t even have the funds to register; 1600 Euro is required and they have only raised 270 Euros towards the cost. We wonder just how they will raise funds to neuter hundreds of cats. Meanwhile, the suffering continues. The neighbouring island of Poros, where the active group recognizes the need for outside help, has succeeded in neutering over 400 cats. The group s tireless efforts and commitment have resulted in colonies of healthy cats. It is a pity that the residents on Hydra are so apathetic and don t follow the excellent example of Poros. Carol McBeth travelled to Brussels to participate in the programme. Carol had positive meetings with a number of Greek MEP s who pledged their support of the directive. Having made contacts with MEP s concerned with animal welfare issues this can only be of great benefit to GAWF in future European campaigns. ECFA Meeting in Athens On Saturday 9th December, GAWF hosted a European Coalition for Farm Animals (ECFA) meeting in Athens. Barbara Dias Pais, CIWF s European Communications Coordinator, chaired the meeting. Farm animal campaigns and humane education were all discussed with delegates from each group given the opportunity to present their campaigns, comment on CIWF education material and future plans. 20 ΕΛΠΙ Α Issue Twenty Two Spring 2007

Και Fundraising - so many ways to help GAWF Fundraising is absolutely crucial to our campaigns and we are extremely grateful to those of you who take time out of your busy lives to help. Here we look at two of our very special members and the different ways they raised vital funds for GAWF. More funds for GAWF! Sophie More is one of GAWF s youngest members, yet she is one of our most active fundraisers. Here Sophie tells of her love of animals and Greece and how this inspired her to get active for GAWF and raise much needed funds for our work. Sophie on holiday in Greece with a beach dog she befriended. Η Βάσω αποκαλύπτει ότι I am 14 and have loved animals all my life and wanted to be a vet for almost as long. I fell in love with Greece as a country the first time I went on τα παιδιά που συναντάει ο Σύλλογος κατά τις επισκέψεις σε σχολεία του νησιού έχουν θαυµάσιες απόψεις σε φιλοζωικά θέµατα. Τα µέλη του Συλλόγου θα ήθελαν να ευχαριστήσουν το GAWF από καρδίας για την πολύτιµη βοήθειά του τα τελευταία χρόνια, και ειδικότερα την Carol McBeth. holiday there (at the age of nine) but at the same time was shocked by the number of stray and mistreated animals. I spent the holiday befriending and trying to look after all of the local dogs and cats and, when I returned to England, I found out about GAWF and have been a member ever since. I raise money for GAWF during the summer holidays each year. I have done several sponsored events, each raising around 100, and this year I made bookmarks and decorated notebooks. I painted or drew patterns on one side of these and put some information about the work of GAWF on the back. I then sold to friends and family. It is my ambition now to move to Greece when I have qualified as a vet and work for a charity (hopefully GAWF!). Until then, I will continue to donate money and help to spread awareness of the animal welfare situation in Greece. Sophie More Ladies (and gentlemen) who lunch In August 2006 GAWF members Angela and Martin Humphery and Diana Lord organised a very successful fundraising lunch at Angela and Martin s house in North London. Below Angela tells us about these special events. We hold three different animal charity lunches every summer, one in the middle of June, the second in the middle of July and third (and last) in the middle of August. Left to right Martin, GAWF trustee Lily Venizelou and Angela We manage to raise about 1,700 at each one from ticket sales and from the raffle. However, they do require a considerable amount of hard work and money - about 150 for 45 guests but, rather than give the charity 150 we can turn it into 1,500. It takes time contacting the various animal charities, agreeing dates plus a speaker from the charity, getting the invitations designed and printed (the charities do this) to addressing envelopes and paying for the postage, which I do. I always include a flyer from the charities with the invitations to explain what the charity actually does. These go out about the end of February when people have recovered from Christmas and before they re booked up for the summer. I have a large data base of about 150 friends, neighbours and acquaintances and send invitations to everyone because, apart from raising money, the invitations alone raise awareness. Even if people don t come, they very often send a donation. We provide home cooked food and we charge 20 a head which includes wine. I and my friends cook and pay for the food while my husband kindly provides the wine. If you find all this a bit beyond your budget, you could always sell wine by the glass. If you re a beginner at fundraising don t start too big, try a smaller event first such as lunch or dinner for just a dozen or even a coffee morning and see how it goes. Needless to say, I have to chase up some people about a month before our first lunch but we ve always managed to get out 45 to each and every one. Friends donate raffle prizes and I always get a guest to sell the tickets, another two to help serve the food and another to act as wine waiter. It s a team effort! We always have the charity speaker between the main course and the dessert, before people start leaving, and draw the raffle after the dessert which usually brings in a couple of hundred pounds. 1 a ticket or seven for a fiver and most pay the fiver. We call these lunches FUN(D)RAISERS because we hope that people will have some fun too. Angela Humphery There are many different ways you can fundraise for GAWF and whether you have 5 minutes to spare or a whole day every penny counts. So why not try one of these top 10 ideas? 1. Hold a sponsored dog walk gather as many local residents as possible. You can even contact the media to let them know what you are doing which means you are raising awareness as well as funds. 2. Sell items at school or to friends and family members - like Sophie 3. Hold a lunch or a coffee morning - like Angela 4. Have a car boot or garden sale have a good old spring clean and ask friends to donate unwanted Christmas presents and other items. 5. Collection tins why not ask your local shopkeeper or your workplace to place one of our static collection tins with some leaflets. Don t forget to empty the tin regularly. 6. Hold a street collection outside your local shopping centre you may need to apply to your local council. We can help with this and supply you with collection tins, leaflets and banners. 7. Organise a summer fete you can have a dog show, sell cakes, donated items and plants, and charge people a fee for entry. 8. Have a mufti day at school, university or in the office just ask your teacher/ boss and ask for a small donation from everyone for the privilege. 9. Hold a quiz night at your local pub charge people to enter. 10. Hold an auction of promises you could hold this in your house or at the local pub. Ask people to donate anything from a taxi ride to the airport to a week of dog walking. The money you raise could be used for one of the following: Subsidised cat spay - approx. 20 Subsidised dog spay - approx. 33 Preventative treatment for external and internal parasites - approx 10 Vaccination of a puppy - approx 6 Vaccination of a cat - approx. 4 Material for visiting a school based on 3 classes with a total of 45 kids - approx 6 If you would like to fundraise for GAWF, please contact us to discuss your ideas. We simply could not continue to help the animals and fund other animal welfare societies in Greece if we didn t receive funds from you, our members. Thank you so much and keep up the good work! 24 ΕΛΠΙ Α Issue Twenty Two Spring 2007

Letters Thank you for your letters, and do remember, if you see the abuse of animals, don t just write to us. Let s ensure that people realise the way animals are treated matters. What to do if you witness animal abuse in Greece Ensure you have a copy of the GAWF leaflet Please help the animals of Greece. (These are available from the London office, tel Tell your hotel, your travel company, the police and the local mayor. When complaining to the police or the mayor, quote the number of the animal welfare law 3170/2003 and insist that your complaint is recorded in writing. Ask for a copy of your report and the protocol number. This ensures that the complaint is recorded and not just discarded once you leave the office. If you have had a good experience with the local animal welfare group, do mention this in your report. It will assist the group in its work. Dear GAWF, I thought that you would like an update on Gracie, whose story was featured in the last Elpida. Gracie just loved the snow we had at the beginning of the year. She was stealing the empty dog food cans from the recycling bin and burying them in the snow! When it cleared we found about 20!!! Also she is very adept at catching snowballs. She has plenty of space to run around in our garden and one of her favourite tricks was to throw herself into Pete s carp pond and try to catch a fish!! The pond is now netted! She is well loved and well spoiled - and very happy. Love, Mary Dear GAWF As an American who spent the 2005/ 2006 school year working in Athens as a teaching fellow at Athens College, I thought I had seen it all regarding the awful conditions domesticated, homeless Greek animals must endure on a day to day basis. At the start of the summer I said goodbye to my American roommates and began my stay with a If the treatment of animals by a tourist establishment (donkey rides, carriage horses, dogs near a hotel) concerns you, don t support it and urge others to do the same. It can be inadvisable to complain about strays generally as this may lead to poisoning (to get rid of the problem) before the tourist season. If you see something you believe is illegal, tell the police. Thank you so much. Apart from any help you may be able to give, these actions will greatly help the future wellbeing of the animals we all care about. family in their home in Palio Psychico as well as in their home on Hydra. The majority of my summer was spent on Hydra; an idyllic Greek island for humans clearly not animals. Unfortunately, its incomparable natural beauty is marred by its wanton disregard for the many hundreds of unwanted cats that live there. The wretched conditions that these animals must endure daily is something that I have never before witnessed. Sickly, unmistakably neglected cats run rampant in every direction. One cannot sit calmly at a taverna or café without being bombarded by half a dozen starving cats and kittens. Distinct from much of the Greek population, that appears unaffected when confronted by the abuse and neglect of its country s animals, tourists from the US, UK, Germany, France and other developed nations appear taken aback by the plight of these forgotten creatures. On one especially dark and stuffy night, accompanied by a Greek American who had been visiting the family with whom I was living, I strolled down to Hydra s internet café. Even in the pitch-black darkness I could see what appeared to be a dead bloodied animal on the corner of a step. When taking a closer look, I discovered that what I had been looking at was in actuality a heap of newborn kittens...half of them dead after succumbing to an attack by some other animal (perhaps a stray and hungry tom cat). Though people who lived nearby were aware of this struggling new life, not a soul had the necessary knowledge or the where with all they would have needed to attempt to alleviate these animals suffering. During the next week I did all I could. Though the fate of these helpless creatures seemed very much in doubt I was unwilling to give up. With the priceless help and support I received from the Fund I was ultimately able to save one of six kittens as well as her one eyed mother (missing eyes common amongst the cats on Hydra is a sure result of Cat Flue or Chlamydia). Both would have surely faced prolonged and painful deaths without immediate intervention. Who knows how many more sickly kittens this poor mother would have given birth to before she herself would have passed on? Upon my voyage to the mainland with mother and kitten in tow, a group of French children ran over to me excited and interested to find out about the animals I was transporting. After sharing the story of these cats with one child who spoke English and translated for his friends, the children clearly became upset. The parents of these children began asking me, why there was such an apparent overpopulation of strays in Greece particularly Hydra. Don t these people care? they asked me. How was I to respond? After spending a year in Greece I naturally made many friends and became deeply attached to this splendid and proud country. When these French tourists asked me this question I was at a loss for words. The way animals are treated in Greece and even more specifically in Hydra is a poor representation of the country and its people. After meeting and speaking with dozens of tourists from all over the world I know first hand that seeing such a maltreatment of animals caused these people (who offer Greece millions of dollars each year in tourism) to leave Greece, a country sweet in so many ways with a bitter taste in their mouths, questioning if they could ever return. Why spend thousands of dollars on a vacation to expose oneself to such misery and suffering? It is difficult enough for adult travelers to witness such a clear and flagrant disregard for such helpless creatures, let alone families traveling with young children. On a less extreme level I would also not choose a place for a relaxing summer vacation where I couldn t even sit and enjoy a cup of coffee without being approached by dozens of starving, begging animals. As a lover of both Greece and its animals I would ask anyone in a position of power or authority to do all they can to help their beautiful country to ameliorate this problem in the most humane way possible. Starting an extensive spaying/neutering, health and education program on Hydra would greatly benefit thousands of suffering animals and perhaps of equal importance, present Greece in a manner which is consistent with its natural beauty, its magnificent history and its people s inherent generosity. Sincerely, Daryn Dear GAWF, Just to let you know that I have had my visit with the mayor of Livathos and he is totally committed to helping us with a neutering programme. We have a new vet on the island and she has not got a surgery yet, she is going to work the odd day at the council offices and they are covering all the costs, and we will neuter stray and owned animals, microchip and vaccinate at the same time, both dogs and cats. He was shocked when he saw our accounts and how much we spend on food and vet bills, and is so serious about doing something about the plight of the animals here. I feel very positive now, he is very committed and the deputy mayor has been our friend since we moved to Kefalonia and is a great animal lover he has stray dogs and feeds about 40 cats, he is a softy and his chickens have to die of old age, he says that his family have never killed any of their chickens when they finish laying, or any other animals they have. Send Letters to: GAWF, 1-2 Castle Lane, London SW1E 6DN Regards Pat Dolman What wonderful news. Please pass on our congratulations to the mayor. He is obviously a caring person and GAWF hopes that other mayors on the island will follow his great example. Dear Sue, I received my magazine and was very sad to hear the news of Xionatie. I would like to thank everyone involved in helping her and I have been incredibly impressed by all the effort made by everyone concerned. Would you please convey my thanks to Sylvie for all the great work she does? I wish you all the best for the New Year. Yours Sincerely, Julie Lambert (Xionatie s story was featured on page 15 of Elpida 21, the previous issue) Please Remember the Animals of Greece in Your Will Since 1959 The Fund has worked tirelessly for the suffering animals of Greece, providing practical help and raising awareness about the plight of animals. In the past twenty years GAWF has provided over 1 million for various projects to help animals in Greece. This is only possible through the generosity of our supporters - GAWF receives no state aid from the Greek or UK governments. Making a bequest to GAWF is one of the most important things you can do for the animals of Greece. Remembering them leaves a real legacy of hope. If you intend to benefit the Fund it is important that you state its full name and address - failure to do so can lead to litigation or even the loss of the legacy. Therefore, please use the following words: I bequeath to the Fund, Registered Charity no: , of 1-2 Castle Lane, London, SW1E 6DR, the sum of..., and I direct that the receipt of the Treasurer or other authorised Officer of the Fund shall be good and sufficient discharge of such legacy. GAWF has produced a simple guide on making a will with advice on how best to make provision for your family, friends, animals and causes close to your heart. The guide is available free from GAWF. Help us to give them hope Thank you 26 ΕΛΠΙ Α Issue Twenty Two Spring 2007
