Balis, University of Michigan Newsletter Fall-Winter, 2008 A MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT By Dr. John Balis, President, AFGLC/IFGLC Dear Members and Friends of AFGLC/IFGLC, Dr. Bayzar Erkman-Balis, an Armenian-American and a dedicated co-worker of AFGLC, rested in peace last week in the Garden of Memories, next to the late Dr. Demetrios Halkias, a very dear friend of my family and a pillar during the creation and growth of our Foundation. Prior to her pending death she instructed me to establish a fund, under the overall oversight of a committee headed by our son Dr. Ulysses J. Balis, to support in perpetuity AFGLC educational activities. Her wishes will be fulfilled. In spite of major setbacks including personal catastrophes involving families of AFGLC coworkers here at Tampa Bay and at the Tri-State Center, our Foundation continues to display a sustained vitality and growth. This is due primarily to its collective leadership here in United States as well as in Athens, Greece. The following represent significant recent accomplishments of AFGLC/IFGLC in 2008: 1. Mr. George Behrakis has graciously accepted the title of Honorary AFGLC/ IFGLC President, and will be in attendance for the bestowal of this Title at the up-coming 2009 Forum/Conference. 2. The evidence that AFGLC is increasingly recognized as An Educational Voice of Hellenism ; this is exemplified by the recent unanimous recommendation of a select committee panel - appointed by the Mayor of Athens, Mr. Nikitas Kaklamanis and presided by Dr. Vassilis Vitsaxis, Ambassador of Greece h.c. to award the prestigious City of Athens Award 2008 to AFGLC for the very valuable activities in the field of promotion of the Greek cultural values. 3. The high quality and success of major educational events, including the 4th International Conference in Athens-Zappeion, June, 2008, which followed an equally successful educational event here at USF in March 7-8. Kudos to Dr. Manolis Bechrakis and his Planning Committee. 4. The demonstrated excellence of the ICHS at the Richard Stockton College of New Jersey. Kudos to its Director Dr. Tom Papademetriou and to Dr. Peter Yannos, President of AFGLC Tri-State Center. 5. The continued publication of meaningful AFGLC/IFGLC news via Newsletters and Bulletins. Many thanks to The IFGLC/AFGLC Vice President and Editor, Dr. Byron Palls. (Incidentally, Dr. Palls published last year an interesting and timely book, entitled Cultural Portraits. This book can be very useful to promote amicable interaction with people of different countries and cultures). 6. The seamless sewing of the gaping tear in coping with the Treasurer s responsibilities, as well as the implementation of the Scholarship Activity in the Tampa Bay area, following the untimely departure of the Dr. Demetrios Halkias. Kudos to his daughter Ms. Kalliope Halkias, President of the AFGLC Tampa-Bay Center. 7. The leadership in promoting sustained recruitment in our Foundation. Finally, I should report, in spite of the appearance of being self-serving, that Kudos are due to my son Dr. Ulysses J. Balis, Director of AFGLC/IFGLC Website, for his important work to create and continuously upgrade the AFGLC website, as well as for his valiant effort to establish an AFGLC Presence at the University of Michigan. His mother, the late Dr. Bayzar Erkman-Balis and I are very proud of him. Balis, M.D. President of AFGLC/IFGLC Jbalis1@tampabay.rr.com Tampa Bay Center Report Ms. Kalliope Halkias, President The Tampa Bay Center sponsored its Second Annual Fall Dinner-Dance, a fund-raising event, on November 21, 2008 at the Rusty Pelican, an elegant waterfront restaurant on the Courtney Campbell Causeway. This was a beautiful and quite successful event with more than 110 guests in attendance. We received numerous compliments for having chosen this venue for the second year in a row; from what we observed and the positive comments made, it is most gratifying to know that all who attended the dinner-dance had a wonderful time. Noteworthy also is the fact that we received several donations, for which we are grateful. Thanks to your sponsorship, we were able to invite and pay for several students from the University of South Florida to join us for fun and fellowship. The Tampa Bay Center continues to work on its membership drive and it s encouraging to see new members joining the AFGLC Family. Please remember to renew your membership for (see p. 10 for membership form). The Center is looking forward to assisting with the 2009 Educational Forum/Conference (see p. 7 for details). 3 Page 3 Athens Center Report Prof. Manolis Bechrakis, President The IFGLC Athens Center held a most successful International Conference this past summer. What follows is the Center s press release of this important intellectual event 4 ο ιεθνές Συνέδριο, Ιουνίου 2008: Ζάππειο Μέγαρο «ηµοκρατικές Αρχές των Κλασσικών Χρόνων στους Σύγχρονους Πολιτικούς Θεσµούς» ήταν το θέµα του τριήµερου διεθνούς συνεδρίου που πραγµατοποιήθηκε στις Ιουνίου στο Ζάππειο Μέγαρο από το ιεθνές Ίδρυµα για την Ελληνική Γλώσσα και τον Πολιτισµό (.Ι.Ε.Γ.Π.). Τις εργασίες του συνεδρίου άνοιξε ο Υφυπουργός Εξωτερικών κ. Θεόδωρος Κασσίµης ο οποίος τόνισε τη σηµασία της διάδοσης και διάσωσης της ελληνικής γλώσσας. Είπε χαρακτηριστικά ότι το Υπουργείο στέκεται δίπλα σε κάθε τέτοια προσπάθεια υποστηρίζοντάς την µε όποιο τρόπο µπορεί.ο Πρόεδρος του ιεθνούς Ιδρύµατος για την Ελληνική Γλώσσα και τον Πολιτισµό Ελληνικό κέντρο Καθηγητής κ. Μανόλης Μπεχράκης καλωσόρισε τους καλεσµένους εξηγώντας τους σκοπούς του ιδρύµατος και τονίζοντας τη σηµασία των συνεδρίων που έχουν ως κύριο σκοπό να ευαισθητοποιήσουν και να κινητοποιήσουν τα άτοµα, τις κοινωνίες, τους κοινωνικούς και οικονοµικούς φορείς και τις πολιτικές ηγεσίες για την προσφορά της κλασικής παιδείας. «Ο σκοπός του ιδρύµατος είναι διττός: αφενός να υποστηρίξει επικουρικά τις Ελληνικές σπουδές σε πανεπιστηµιακό επίπεδο και αφετέρου να φροντίζει την καλλιέργεια και τη διατήρηση της Ελληνικής γλώσσας, του πολιτισµού και της ταυτότητας στην Οµογένεια». Μάλιστα τόνισε πως αν και το AFGLC δηµιουργήθηκε αρχικώς στην Tampa, Florida, USA (American Foundation for Greek Language and Culture = Αµερικάνικο Ίδρυµα για την Ελληνική Γλώσσα και Πολιτισµό = ΑΙΕΓΠ) µε την αξιέπαινη και την αξιοθαύµαστη πρωτοβουλία εµψυχωµένων µε αποστολική διάθεση ορισµένων Ελληνο-αµερικανών από τον ακαδηµαϊκό και επιχειρηµατικό κόσµο µε σκοπό την αποκατάσταση και την ενίσχυση των Ελληνικών Γραµµάτων και του Ελληνικού Πολιτισµού στις ΗΠΑ, γρήγορα επεκτάθηκε και στην Ελλλάδα (µε προοπτική να επεκταθεί και σε άλλες χώρες), και έτσι δηµιουργήθηκε το ιεθνές Ίδρυµα για την Ελληνική Γλώσσα και Πολιτισµό ΙΕΓΠ = IFGLC: International Foundation for Greek language and Culture. Σε χαιρετισµό που απέστειλε ο Πρόεδρος του AFGLC/IFGLC καθηγητής κ. Γιάννης Μπαλής υπογράµµισε πως αποστολή του ιδρύµατος είναι η διατήρηση και περαιτέρω προαγωγή και ενίσχυση της ελληνικής γλώσσας και του πολιτισµού σε παγκόσµιο επίπεδο µε τη δηµιουργία ιεπιστηµονικών Κέντρων Ελληνικών Σπουδών ( ΚΕΣ) σε ακαδηµαϊκά ιδρύµατα των ΗΠΑ και σε ολόκληρο τον κόσµο. Ο Ειδικός Γραµµατέας του Υπουργείου Παιδείας κ. Άγγελος Συρίγος είπε ότι ο πολιτισµός της χώρας µας, µιας µικρής σε έκταση χώρας, επηρέασε όλη την ανθρωπότητα και διαδόθηκε σε όλο τον κόσµο. Ως λαός καταφέραµε να διατηρήσουµε τη γλώσσα µας αναλλοίωτη εδώ και πολλά χρόνια και τη µεταλαµπαδεύσαµε στους νεότερους. Το να καταδείξεις τις ηµοκρατικές Αρχές των Κλασσικών Χρόνων στους σύγχρονους πολιτικούς θεσµούς µέσα από ένα συνέδριο έχει πολύ µεγάλη σηµασία. Ο εκπρόσωπος του Μακαριωτάτου Αρχιεπισκόπου Αθηνών και πάσης Ελλάδος κ.κ. Ιερώνυµου, Θεοφιλέστατος Επίσκοπος Μαραθώνος κ. Μελίτων είπε: «Ο λόγος είναι πολύ σηµαντικός στη ζωή των ανθρώπων. Είναι ο πλούτος τους. Είναι αυτό που τον κάνει να διαφέρει από τα ζώα. Πρέπει λοιπόν να τον διαφυλάξουµε µαζί µε τη γλώσσα µας και κατ επέκταση τον πολιτισµό µας τον οποίο διατηρούµε εδώ και εκατοντάδες χρόνια». Ο τ. Πρόεδρος και εκπρόσωπος του ΕΒΕΑ κ ρακούλης Φουντουκάκος επικεντρώθηκε στα ερωτήµατα που θέτει το συνέδριο και που απασχολούν καθηµερινά τους πολίτες. Κατά πόσο θεσµοθετηµένοι κανόνες από την πολιτεία εφαρµόζονται και πόσο καταστρατηγούνται; Τόνισε την ανάγκη διεθνοποίησης, τις αλλαγές στα εκπαιδευτικά ιδρύµατα και στην ανάγκη προσαρµογής τους στις νέες συνθήκες. Η εκπρόσωπος της Ελληνικής Γλωσσικής Κληρονοµιάς κα Αννα Σταφιδά-Βαλαβανίδου τόνισε χαρακτηριστικά ότι «Η υπεράσπιση της ελληνικής παιδείας σηµαίνει υπεράσπιση του διαπολιτισµικού χαρακτήρα του ελληνικού πολιτισµού που από τον Ισοκράτη ως τις µέρες µας ορίζει τον πλουραλισµό, την ισονοµία, τον σεβασµό στις δηµοκρατικές λειτουργίες του πολιτεύµατος και το σεβασµό του πολίτη». Κύριος οµιλητής της τελετής έναρξης του συνεδρίου ήταν ο Ακαδηµαϊκός Καθηγητής κ. Κωνσταντίνος εσποτόπουλος, µε θέµα οµιλίας: «Η δηµοκρατία, θεσµός των Ελλήνων και οι όροι της σύγχρονης ισχύος της» ο οποίος αφού ανέλυσε τη σπουδαιότητα και το ρόλο της δηµοκρατίας τόνισε τη σηµασία των Μέσων Μαζικής Ενηµέρωσης στη διαµόρφωση αντίληψης και άποψης των ανθρώπων, ιδιαίτερα του ραδιοφώνου και της τηλεόρασης, που αδιάκριτα και χωρίς κανέναν έλεγχο εισδύουν στο οικογενειακό άδυτο, την ανάγκη πλήρους διαφάνειας και ακεραιότητας αλλά και το σεβασµό των ακροατών και τηλεθεατών οι οποίοι λόγω έλλειψης αναγκαίου χρόνου αδυνατούν να αντιδράσουν κριτικά. Στην έναρξη του συνεδρίου βραβεύθηκαν για το πολύπλευρο κοινωφελές και κοινωνικό τους έργο οι ακόλουθες προσωπικότητες: Prof. John Anton, ιακεκριµένος Καθηγητής Ελληνικής Φιλοσοφίας και Πολιτισµού, USF, ΗΠΑ. 4 Page 4 AFGLC s ICHS (Interdisciplinary Centers for Hellenic Studies) University of South Florida Dr. James Strange, Director Recent academic activities of those who hold AFGLC-created professorships at USF: >Dr. Michael Decker, the Maroulis Professor of Byzantine History and Orthodox Religion, has completed one research trip to Tunisia in 2006 examining Towers, Refuges and Farms in the Late Roman East. In 2007 he engaged in an archaeological surface survey for Byzantine agricultural practices and localities in Turkey. He has published Production, Manufacture and Technology Agriculture and Agricultural Technology in The Oxford Handbook of Byzantine Studies, edited by Elizabeth Jeffreys, John Haldon, and Robin Cormack (2008). He has edited Tilling the Hateful Earth: Agricultural Production and Trade in the Late Antique East (Oxford: Oxford U. Press, scheduled to appear in 2009). He researches agricultural economy and society of the late antique Levant, including Byzantium and Islam. He has participated in the Oxford Archaeological Survey of Anderin, Syria. >Dr. Ippokratis Kantzios, the Kourmolis Professor of Greek Language and Literature, presented a paper at the Fifth Annual Interdisciplinary and Multicultural Conference on Food Representation in Literature, Film and the Other Arts in February of The paper was entitled Ithaca s Wine and the Return of Odysseus. He attended the Conference of American Ancient Historians in April of Dr. Kantzios presented a paper, New Pan in Menander s Dyskolos, at the Annual Meeting of the Classical Association of Middle West and South, April of >Dr. William M. Murray, the Stathis Professor of Greek History, has attended the Association of Ancient Historians conference in 2007, the Archaeological Institute of America conference in February of 2008, and made an extended research trip to Greece the summer of He is deeply involved with the Annual meeting for the Association of Ancient Historians conference scheduled to be held at USF at the same time as the AFGLC-ICHS Forum in Dr. Murray researches ancient Naval and Military Technologies. He has contributed the following articles to the Cambridge Dictionary of Classical Civilization, 2006: navies, Roman; navigation; ships and shipbuilding; and triremes. He has also contributed to the Oxford Encyclopedia of Maritime History, 2007: Ancient Navies; Over- view and the Ancient Navies of Rome, Hellenistic states; Carthage, and Phoenicia. >Dr. Joanne Waugh, the AFGLC Professor of Greek Culture, has published with David Garrison Paideia before Plato: The Sophia of Xenophanes, in Paideia in a Global Era, Konstantine Boudouris and Kostas Kalimtzis, eds. (Athens: Ionia Publications (2008). In addition she has published with Roger Ariew, On the History of Philosophy and the Philosophy of Science, in the Routledge Companion to the Philosophy of Science, Martin Curd and Stathis Psillos, eds. (Routledge, 2008). She has submitted for publication with Jennifer Ingle The End of Feminist Aesthetics, in Feminism and Aesthetics, Ryan Musgrave, ed. (Kluwer), which is forthcoming. Her work in progress is on The Platonic Dialogue as Paideia. In 2007 Dr. Waugh was particularly active presenting papers. She read a paper entitled Philosophy: The Very Idea, at the Society for Ancient Greek Philosophy, Fordham University Lincoln Center, New York, New York, October 20, Also in November of 2007 she read her paper entitled Philosophy: The Very Idea for a conference on Philosophy and Its History at the University of South Florida. In Greece, on July 20, 2007 she presented a paper co-authored with David Garrison, Paideia before Philosophy: The Sophia of Xenophanes ; this was read at the meeting of the International Society for Greek Philosophy, Samos Island. On April 18, 2007 she read a paper at the meeting of the International Society for Intellectual History in London. The title was Philosophia and Historiē: Intellectual History and the History of Philosophy. Finally on March 2, 2007 she read a paper entitled Metaphors of Nature and the Nature of Metaphor: Lessons from the Ancients, at the meeting for Science in Humanities Humanities in Science. On March 21, 2008 she read a paper at the Annual Meeting of the Society for Analytical Feminism with the American Philosophical Association, Pasadena, California, entitled The End of Feminist Aesthetics? Dr. Waugh has a forthcoming presentation scheduled for April 23-25, 2009 for the Society for Ancient Philosophy, Baltimore, MD. The paper is on Reading, Writing, and Doing Philosophy: The Platonic Dialogue Revisited. This paper is the keynote address for that conference. AFGLC ON THE MOVE Our Foundation has been working quietly to establish an AFGLC presence on a number of US campuses. Several persons deserve special recognition for their exceptionally strong efforts to bring this goal to fruition: Dr. Kimon Valavanis (University of Denver); Dr. Ulysses Balis and Dr. Vassilis Lambropoulos (University of Michigan); Mr. Nicolas Karakas and Dr. Diane Touliatos (University of Missouri, St. Louis); and Mr. Peter Tsandes and Dr. Stella Tsirka (Stony Brook University of New York). The Foundation is fortunate to count these persons among its own! After a hiatus of a few years, AFGLC is moving forward again. More information on these ventures will be forthcoming, as each one becomes a reality.

5 Page 5 TRISTATE REPORT Dr. Peter Yiannos, President Here are a few items worthy of note in our Tri-State AFGLC Center in the past few months: *The Board of Directors concentrated on generating the funds towards the support of the Stockton Inter-Disciplinary Center for Hellenic Studies (ICHS). Thanks to the generosity of a few board members and a couple supporters of the Stockton Hellenic program, we were able to express our support to the Stockton ICHS with a check of $10, The presentation was made to the Development Officer of the Stockton College on October 26, 2008, at the Sofia Restaurant at Margate, NJ. There, the Hellenic Friends for Stockton (HFS) organization had a fundraiser dinner event in support of the ICHS as well. This, by design, coincided with St. Demetrios and OXI Day of celebration and was attended by over 100 people. The program included very impressive presentations in Greek by students of the College. Obviously, our Rev. Dr. Demetrios Constantelos celebrated his name day and everyone there wished him well. *The recent disastrous riots in Greece by some students (using the word student loosely), brings further into focus the need for rediscovering Greek Classics across the Globe. One wonders whatever happened to Socrates virtue Περί Πατρίδος. Τι έγινε το "«Μητρός τε και πατρός και των άλλων προγόνων απάντων τιµιώτερον η πατρίς εστί και σεµνότερον και αγιώτερον και εν µείζονι µοίρα και παρά θεοίς και παρ ανθρώποις τοις νουν έχουσι»; I suppose the last phrase, «τοις νουν έχουσιν» / capable of thinking, says it all! *Has the world forgotten that without virtues, no nation can achieve civilization status, and if a civilized nation loses the word virtue from its vocabulary and its behavior, that nation is doomed to oblivion? The key Greek words here are φιλοφρόνησις (love of prudence) and φιλοµάθεια (love of learning), which are essential to ethos development and come from true Hellenic paedeia. The tree of Hellenic wisdom below indicates the key components for developing ethos or character. Our educational system and family structure have changed to the point that we seem to ignore the fundamental principles that our unsurpassed ancestors and their cultural descendants, the creators of Renaissance for the West, envisioned for life and on which they based their thinking and actions to raise us from darkness and bring us to the age of reason. *We reproduce here a year-end advertisement in The Hellenic News of America, which highlights two key accomplishments in our Tri- State area and the corresponding organizations that sponsored them. Thalia Vassilatos Warnement, αge 41, of Arlington, VA, died January 13, 2009, surrounded by her family at home after a ten-month battle against leukemia. Thalia, a patent lawyer and partner in the law firm Finnegan Henderson Farabow Garrett & Dunner LLP, was born in Wilmington, DE and graduated from Concord High School in She graduated from the University of Virginia in 1989 and completed a law degree at the College of William and Mary Marshall-Wythe School of Law in Despite her rigorous work demands she was an active volunteer at her children's schools and with Girl Scouts. 7 Page 7 ANNOUNCING the 14th ANNUAL AFGLC FORUM/CONFERENCE February, 2009 University of South Florida, Tampa, Florida Underwritten by the philanthropists and AFGLC Benefactors Margo and George D. Behrakis This year s Forum/Conference on Hellenism and the University will focus on the preservation and promotion of Hellenic Studies in American Universities, and will be held on the campus of the University of South Florida (USF), Tampa, Florida. The Forum/Conference is being organized by the American Foundation for Greek Language and Culture (AFGLC) in partnership with the two Interdisciplinary Centers for Hellenic Studies (ICHS) it has established, one at USF and the other at the Richard Stockton College of NJ (RSCNJ). The Forum/Conference aims at bringing together academics, scholars, and interested individuals, who will... explore ways to include Hellenic studies in the academic curricula of colleges and universities; organize a workshop on the creation, operation and funding of AFGLC chapters with ICHS in academic institutions; and present scholarly papers. THEMES: Some of the themes of the papers and panel discussions of the Forum/Conference will be: > Hellenic Culture in Promoting Interdisciplinary Approaches to the Origins of Science, Philosophy and Humanities; > Modern Age Relevance of Educational Models from Ancient Greece and Byzantium; > Exposure of students to Greek language and culture, in preparation for future ICHS Programs. SPECIAL LECTURES Two important lectures will be the highlight of this event: The Annual AFGLC-ICHS Lecture on Hellenism, that will be delivered by Dr. John P. Anton, a well-known USF professor of philosophy. His topic will be: The Challenge of Hellenism in Our Times; and The Keynote Address of the Forum/Conference, that will be delivered during the Friday evening traditional reception--which will take place at the Embassy Suites Hotel on Fowler Avenue, near the USF campus; it will be delivered by the Rev. Dr. Stanley Harakas, and his topic will be Hellenism and Orthodox Christianity. SPECIAL HONOR During the Friday reception, Dr. John Balis will have the distinct pleasure of bestowing upon a great Hellene and one of our benefactors, Mr. George Behrakis, the title of Honorary President of IFGLC/AFGLC in recognition of his steadfast support of the noble mission of our Foundation. Several workshops and round table discussions have been planned in order to review the Creation, Operation and Funding of AFGLC Chapters with ICHS in Academic Institutions, in an attempt to incorporate the ideas, conclusions and recommendations of several groups in order to produce a guide/blueprint to be followed when establishing Hellenic Centers in institutions of higher learning. Rounding off the Forum/Conference will be student papers, posters, and Greek Dances. The Conference proceedings will be available electronically on the AFGLC web site. Balis As the foundation approaches the significant milestone of its first decade of service to the numerous communities, where it works in partnership with both Philhellenes and academia (recognizing, of course, that the true underpinnings of the foundation go as far back as 1992 or earlier), there emerges a remarkable legacy of written documents, transcripts of presentations, photographs and yes, even video footage of a number of noteworthy events. Perhaps exceeding 7300 in number, and counting, these documents represent not only the legacy and prior accomplishments of the Foundation, but a valuable edifice of information that is of immediate interest to scholars, members of the Foundation, and the general public alike. One of the strategic plans for website development, announced at the IFGLC/AFGLC forum in Athens, Greece last year, has been the provisioning for modern archival and file presentation services on our website, such that this valuable and growing compendium of documentation can be collated, indexed and made available for all, via a new, expanded archives section on the AFGLC/IFGLC Website. Towards this goal, over the prior seven months, the necessary infrastructure and database expansions have been added to the underpinnings of the website, with our anticipation for being able to showcase this new, greatly expanded content and functionality at the 2009 AFGLC Forum in Tampa, Florida. Towards the goal of making the archive as complete and meaningful as possible, I encourage any of you reading this to look into your own personal archives for photos, meaningful and germane correspondence and other salient documents, that pertain to the legacy and evolution of the AFGLC/IFGLC, and forward these documents to the archival team, electronically, at archivist@afglc.org. Η βραδιά έκλεισε µε τον διεθνούς φήµης καλλιτέχνη Αλέξανδρο ο οποίος έπαιξε ζωντανά και τραγούδησε την µελοποιηµένη σύνθεσή του ΤΗΣ ΑΝΑΜΝΗΣΗΣ ΦΤΕΡΑ, ΤΗΣ ΨΥΧΗΣ ΜΑΣ ΙΕΡA. Μανόλης Μπεχράκης άνοιξε τη δεύτερη µέρα του συνεδρίου µε πολύ σηµαντικούς οµιλητές οι οποίοι ανέλυσαν θέµατα όπως η Οικουµενικότητα της Ελληνικής Κληρονοµιάς οι ηθικοπολιτικές αξίες της ελληνικής αρχαιότητας στο σύγχρονο κόσµο, οι τύποι ηγεσίας µε αφορµή τον Πολιτικό του Πλάτωνα, η ηµοκρατία και φιλοκαλία: ιδανική σύζευξη δύο διαχρονικών πολιτισµικών αξιών. > Ο διακεκριµένος Καθηγητής Ελληνικής Φιλοσοφίας και Πολιτισµού, USF, ΗΠΑ, John Anton, τόνισε τη σηµασία της ταυτότητας και του πολιτισµικού έργου των αποδήµων Ελλήνων σε όποια γωνιά του κόσµου και αν βρίσκονται καθώς και την ανάγκη συνεργασίας των Ελλήνων ακαδηµαϊκών και οµογενών. Αυτό όµως δεν µπορεί να γίνει χωρίς την ουσιαστική αρωγή της Πολιτείας. > Η Μυρτώ ραγώνα - Μονάχου, καθηγήτρια Φιλοσοφίας Πανεπιστηµίου Αθηνών στην εισήγησή της επικεντρώθηκε στην προϊστορία των ανθρωπίνων δικαιωµάτων και στην αρχή της ηθικής ισότητας όλων των ανθρώπων. Μιας αρχής που γεννήθηκε στην Ελλάδα. Τόνισε πως το σπουδαιότερο ηθικο-πολιτικό επίτευγµα και µέγιστο πολιτισµικό γεγονός του περασµένου αιώνα υπήρξε η Οικουµενική ιακήρυξη των Ανθρωπίνων ικαιωµάτων. > Ο Αντώνης Μακρυδηµήτρης, καθηγητής της ιοικητικής Επιστήµης στη Νοµική Σχολή του Πανεπιστηµίου Αθηνών ανέλυσε τους τύπους ηγεσίας µε αφορµή τον Πολιτικό του Πλάτωνα. > Η Ισµήνη Κριάρη Κατράνη, καθηγήτρια Παντείου Πανεπιστηµίου, Τµήµα ηµόσιας ιοίκησης αναφέρθηκε στην σηµασία της εκκλησίας του ήµου, στις συνελεύσεις και στην επίτευξη συναίνεσης (consensus conferences). > Ο Θανάσης Παπαδόπουλος, καθηγητής Αρχαιολογίας Πανεπιστηµίου Ιωαννίνων, Αντιπρόεδρος ΙΕΓΠ- Ελληνικό Κέντρο ανέλυσε στην οµιλία του την ιδανική σύζευξη δύο διαχρονικών πολιτισµικών αξιών, της δηµοκρατίας και της φιλοκαλίας. > Ο Χριστόφορος Χαραλαµπάκης, καθηγητής Γλωσσολογίας στη Φιλοσοφική Σχολή του Πανεπιστηµίου Αθηνών, αναφέρθηκε στην εξελικτική πορεία των εννοιών του πολίτη, της πολιτικής και του πολιτισµού. Όσον αφορά στην τελευταία έννοια επεσήµανε τον διαχωρισµό του πολιτισµού από την έννοια της κουλτούρας. Όπως ανέφερε ο πολιτισµός αναφέρεται στα επιτεύγµατα ενός λαού ενώ η έννοια της κουλτούρας εµπεριέχει τις γενικότερες γνώσεις που έχει κάποιος για έναν λαό. > Ο τ. Πρύτανης του Παντείου Πανεπιστηµίου και τ. υπουργός κ. Γ. Κοντογιώργης υποστήριξε ότι στην σηµερινή εποχή υπάρχει δηµοκρατικό έλλειµµα, µε ηθικούς όρους, καθώς αρκετοί καταγγέλλουν τους πολιτικούς ότι δεν «ακούν» την βούληση των πολιτών. Κάλεσε δε για αναστοχασµό της εποχής µας. Στόχος της παρούσας εισήγησης είπε είναι η διαχρονική σηµασιολογική ανάλυση των οµόρριζων όρων: πολίτης, πολιτική και πολιτισµός στις ποικίλες συνδυαστικές µορφές και εκφάνσεις τους, µε παράλληλη αξιοποίηση των αντίστοιχων µεταφραστικών δανείων από την αγγλική, τη γαλλική και τη γερµανική γλώσσα. Έµφαση δίνεται στον ρόλο του πολίτη από την αρχαιότητα έως σήµερα, και ιδιαίτερα στις νέες προκλήσεις που έχει να αντιµετωπίσει ο σύγχρονος Ευρωπαίος. Ερευνάται η ευρωπαϊκή πολιτειότητα (European citizenship) σε σχέση µε την εθνική ταυτότητα, και προτείνεται ως λύση το µοντέλο των πολλαπλών ταυτοτήτων. Επανεξετάζεται, τέλος, το ύφος και το ήθος της πολιτικής στην πρακτική της εξάσκηση µε επίκεντρο το αίτηµα για ένα νέο πολιτικό πολιτισµό. > Ο Γιάννης Καζάζης, καθηγητής της Κλασσικής Φιλολογίας του Αριστοτελείου Πανεπιστηµίου, Αντιπρόεδρος του Κέντρου Ελληνικής Γλώσσας αποσαφήνισε τη σηµασία της πρώτης εµφάνισης του όρου Κοινωνία των Πολιτών από τον Αριστοτέλη, το πέρασµα από τον Κικέρωνα και τον Αυγουστίνο µέχρι τη µεταµόρφωση του όρου από τους Hobbes, Locke, Hegel, Marx στη µορφή που έχει σήµερα. > Ο Γιάννης Παπακώστας, Οµότιµος καθηγητής της Νεοελληνικής Φιλολογίας του Πανεπιστηµίου Αθηνών, µέλος Εθνικού Ραδιοτηλεοπτικού συµβουλίου ανέλυσε το ποιητικό έργο του Σικελιανού και τη σχέση του µε την αρχαία µυθολογία. Στο τέλος της δεύτερης ηµέρας του συνεδρίου είχε εξαιρετικό ενδιαφέρον η στρογγυλή τράπεζα µε θέµα «Πολιτική: Επάγγελµα ή πρόσκληση και πρόκληση. Τρόποι εκλογής αιρετών αξιωµάτων: κοµµατικά ή ενιαία ψηφοδέλτια, θητείες (επανεκλογιµότητα) και διαφθορά» όπου πήραν µέρος οι δηµοσιογράφοι: Αθανάσιος Παπανδρόπουλος, Σταύρος Λυγερός, Νίκος Ξυδάκης και Γιάννης Τριάντης µε συντονιστή τον Καθηγητή Γιώργο Κοντογιώργη, τ. Πρύτανη Παντείου Πανεπιστηµίου και τ. Υπουργό. Τα συµπεράσµατα της συζήτησης ήταν ότι η κρίση που πλήττει τα κόµµατα και αφορά κυρίως την αξιοπιστία τους, την αντιπροσωπευτικότητά τους και τη διαφθορά. Τονίστηκε ότι τα ελληνικά κόµµατα αποτελούν ένα νέο είδος φεουδαρχισµού. Προτάθηκε έτσι η πλήρης ανασυγκρότησή τους και η αναθεώρηση της εκλογιµότητας των βουλευτών. Τέλος υπογραµµίστηκε η ανάγκη να επαναθεµελιωθεί η δηµοκρατία µας πάνω σε βάσεις που θα δίνουν µεγάλο βάρος στην Κοινωνία των Πολιτών. Την Τρίτη ηµέρα του συνεδρίου µίλησαν: > Ο Prof. Christos Evangeliou, Καθηγητής Ελληνικής Φιλοσοφίας Towson University µίλησε για τη Γλώσσα και την Παιδεία και το ρόλο τους στην εκπαίδευση του ιστορικού και διεσπαρµένου Ελληνισµού. > Ο John Camp, διευθυντής Αρχαιολογικών Ανασκαφών στην Αµερικάνικη Αρχαιολογική Σχολή που εποπτεύει τις εργασίες στην Αρχαία Αγορά Αθηνών, παρουσίασε το σηµαντικό έργο της Σχολής για την ανάδειξη και καταγραφή των αρχαιολογικών ευρηµάτων που αποτελεί σηµαντική πηγή για τους σύγχρονους αρχαιολόγους. Επιπλέον αναφέρθηκε στον τρόπο λειτουργίας της Αθηναϊκής ηµοκρατίας. > Η Βασιλική Παπούλια, Καθηγήτρια, ανέλυσε τα δικαιώµατα του πολίτη µέσα από το βυζαντινό δίκαιο ως έκφραση της συνέχειας µεταξύ της αρχαιότητας και των νεότερων χρόνων. > Η Γεωργία Ξανθάκη- Καραµάνου, καθηγήτρια της κλασικής Φιλολογίας και Πρόεδρος του Τµήµατος Φιλολογίας της Σχολής Ανθρωπιστικών Επιστηµών και Πολιτισµικών Σπουδών του Πανεπιστηµίου Πελοποννήσου είχε σαν θέµα της οµιλίας της την Ισονοµία. Ισονοµία και κοινωνική δικαιοσύνη, τήρηση των άγραφων νόµων και του γραπτού θεσµοθετηµένου δικαίου και σεβασµός προς τα ανθρώπινα δικαιώµατα είναι θεµελιώδεις διαχρονικές αξίες που αναδεικνύονται µέσα από τα αθάνατα κείµενα της αρχαίας ελληνικής τραγωδίας. Οι δηµοκρατικές αυτές αρχές των Αθηνών της κλασικής εποχής αποτελούν συνιστώσες των σύγχρονων δηµοκρατιών και των ευνοµούµενων κοινωνιών, όπου γης. Ακολούθησε στρογγυλή Τράπεζα µε Θέµα: «Εκπαίδευση και διατήρηση της Ελληνικής ταυτότητας στην Οµογένεια». > Ο Dr. Tom Papademetriou, καθηγητής, ιευθυντής του διεπιστηµονικού Κέντρου Ελληνικών Σπουδών, Richard Stockton College, New Jersey, Pamona παρουσίασε την η εµπειρία του ιεπιστηµονικού Κέντρου για τις Ελληνικές Σπουδές στο Richard Stockton College of New Jersey. > Ο Rev. Dr. Demetrios J. Constantelos, ιακεκριµένος Επίτιµος καθηγητής, Stockton College τόνισε τη σηµασία να υπάρχουν Ακαδηµαϊκές Έδρες ή διακλαδικά προγράµµατα Ελληνικών Σπουδών. > Η Ms Kalliope Halkias, Πρόεδρος, IFGLC, Tampa αναφέρθηκε στο έργο του πατέρα της καθηγητή ηµήτριου Χαλκιά ο οποίος µέσω των ετησίων διαλέξεων του προσέγγιζε το όραµα του AFGLC µε πίστη και αίσθηµα ευθύνης. > Τέλος, ο Dr. Ulysses Balis, Καθηγητής Πανεπιστηµίου Michigan, Ann Arbor ανέλυσε τους τρόπους προώθησης της εκπαίδευσης για τον Ελληνισµό δια µέσω του διαδικτύου και υπογράµµισε τη µεγάλη αξία αυτού του εγχειρήµατος. Κλείνοντας τις εργασίες του 4 ου ιεθνούς συνεδρίου ο Καθηγητής Μανόλης Μπεχράκης, Πρόεδρος ΙΕΓΠ- Ελληνικό Κέντρο, έκανε µια ευχή: να υπάρξουν συνεχιστές του τόσο σπουδαίου έργου της διάδοσης της ελληνικής γλώσσας και του ελληνικού πολιτισµού σε όλο τον κόσµο. Ακολούθησε θεατρική παράσταση από φοιτητές και µέλη του ΕΠ του Stockton College, ΗΠΑ στο Παλαιό Πανεπιστήµιο Αθηνών στην Πλάκα. 10 Page 10 SCHOLARSHIP ACTIVITY IN THE TAMPA BAY AREA The AFGLC / DR. DEMETRIOS G. HALKIAS SCHOLARSHIP On December 21, 2008, AFGLC was excited to present three $ scholarships to deserving students. The scholarship committee was very challenged by the five applications received and the top three candidates were selected and awarded scholarships. The recipients are: Mr. Charlie Hambos, a junior at the University of Tampa majoring in Psychology, Ms. Evangelia Nezis, a Senior at the University of South Florida majoring in Health Sciences and pursuing a career in Optometry, and Ms. Deborah Doucas, a Senior at the University of South Florida studying law who has just been accepted to Stetson Law School. We are very proud of all the applicants and we are excited to be able to provide three scholarships this year in memory of Dr. Halkias, to continue his legacy. We know that Dr. Halkias would be very proud of their accomplishments. The Halkias Family sincerely appreciates the numerous donations that were made this past year to this scholarship in honor of Dr. Halkias that made possible the award of a third scholarship. (Photographs of the three awarders may be seen on p. 11) Those who become members of AFGLC are given a pin as a symbol of their membership. The initials of our Foundation in English (AFGLC) appear at the top part of the pin, and their corresponding Greek letters (ΑΙΕΓΠ) at the bottom. The scene is representative of our efforts to preserve and promote Hellenism abroad. This AFGLC emblem is a depiction on a cup, dating from the beginning of the 5th century B.C., which was found in Vulci, Tuscany. Today it belongs to the British Museum. The scene shows a teacher as he is unfolding a parchment scroll on which epic poetry has been written. In summary, just as the Greek Historian, Thucydides, set the standard for rigor in the collection and analysis of historical documentation, we should similarly emulate his directives in the stewardship of our own meaningful and growing legacy of contributions to society in general and Hellenic higher education as our predicate exemplar. The AFGLC / PETER & SOPHIA KOUMOLIS SCHOLARSHIP In January 2009 Ten $ scholarships will be awarded to deserving students from various Tampa Bay communities as well as from communities in the Akron and Canton Ohio area. Numerous Scholarship committees have been established to help in the selection process for the awards. The various Church committees were notified back in October to begin advertising for the Kourmolis Scholarship. The monies for the Scholarship were received in September 2007 and have been invested. The interest accrued will be used for the Scholarships. This Scholarship will remain in Perpetuity in honor of the late benefactor, Mr. Peter Kourmolis who believed in the mission of AFGLC. We will keep you posted on the awardees at a later date. WOULD YOU LIKE TO ESTABLISH YOUR OWN SCHOLARSHIP? An amount of $50,000 would suffice to fund an annual scholarship. If placed in a CD or a similar account at a 3-5% interest, it would yield $1,500-2,500 annually, enough for one or even two scholarships (your decision). Since the principal would never be touched and only the interest would be awarded in scholarships annually, your scholarship fund would keep on helping deserving students year after year, in perpetuity. Each scholarship is named after the donor, i.e.: The AFGLC/John Papadopoulos Scholarship. The name of the donor is also added to our benefactors list for all to see. What a noble act indeed! HALKIAS SCHOLARSHIP Give a chance to today s students to become tomorrow s leaders Two scholarships will be given annually to two graduate or undergraduate students majoring in the sciences or enrolled in a pre-medical program of study. To be considered, applicants or their parents must be Orthodox Christians and must submit their application and transcripts of their academic work by August 30, The scholarships will be awarded at the exclusive discretion of the Scholarship Committee. The Scholarship Committee s evaluation of all applications will be based on the following: 1. Course work during the semester prior to the Application. 2. Complexity of courses taken. 3. Grade point average, for the course work completed and overall. 4. Time spent outside the classroom, working to pay for own expenses. 5. Membership and time spent in school-related organizations. 6.
