The message of His victory, when He trampled down death by death. Along with the beautiful springtime, when all of nature blossoms, our hearts spring open also as we stare with hope to Heaven, to the Father of Lights, from Whom every perfect gift descends. God became man to save the world from sin and the devil. This was His mission which He successfully accomplished. The Church, that forms the body of His eternal presence on earth, has been commanded by Him to save the world: Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations (Matt. 28:19-20). This is the reason why every Christian community, every parish, has a unique mission and reason of existence: to continue Christ s mission in the world and to guide people to salvation. Not only its members but the whole world. This mission is ours too, and all our actions and activities should conform with it. Therefore, there arises a need for us to examine if as a parish we comply with the Lord s command. To answer questions like: are we growing spiritually? To look back with constructive self examination, and as Christians who are familiar with repentance and change of mind, locate possible mistakes we made and find ways to correct them. An old saying is very applicable here: If you keep doing what you are already doing, you are going to keep getting what you have already got. Few obstacles present more of a challenge to church growth than resistance to change. That people in general fear change is natural. Change has to do with the unknown, and people fear these things they do not know or do not understand. The fear of change has however a theological and spiritual dimension. Christians are by definition people who are evolving, becoming holy, changing from glory to glory, just as by the Spirit of the Lord (2 Cor. 3:18). Baptism is a change, confession and repentance are another. Living a Christ-like life involves changes which should not cause any fear. Beloved, if we wish that our Parish continues to perform Christ s mission in the world, it is imperative that we examine carefully who we are and where we are heading. I humbly ask you to join me in this exciting adventure, of rediscovering our mission. United together, we will reaffirm that Christianity is another way of life, a life full of spiritual growth. may the grace of our lord Jesus Christ be with you

3 Χριστός Ανέστη! Η αλλαγη του χριστιανου Ηχησε και πάλι στα αυτιά μας το χαρμόσυνο μήνυμα της Αναστάσεως του Κυρίου μας. Το μήνυμα της νίκης πάνω στο θάνατο, που έκανε γιά λογαριασμό ολόκληρου του ανθρώπινου γένους. Παρέα με την όμορφη Ανοιξη, ανοίγεται και η ψυχή μας, θωρώντας με ελπίδα προς τα πάνω, προς τον Πατέρα των Φώτων, από Τον οποίο προέρχεται κάθε τέλειο δώρο. Ο Θεός έγινε άνθρωπος γιά να σώσει τον κόσμο από την αμαρτία και τον Σατανά. Αυτή ήταν η αποστολή Του και αυτό έκανε. Η Εκκλησία, που είναι το σώμα της παντοτινής παρουσίας του Κυρίου στη γη, έχει πάρει από Εκείνον την εντολή να σώσει τον κόσμο: «πορευθέντες μαθητεύσατε πάντα τα έθνη, βαπτίζοντες αυτούς...» (Ματθ. 28:19-20). Γι αυτό κάθε εκκλησιαστική κοινότητα, κάθε ενορία, έχει ένα και μοναδικό σκοπό και λόγο υπάρξεως, να συνεχίσει την αποστολή του Χριστού στον κόσμο και να οδηγήσει τους ανθρώπους στην Σωτηρία. Οχι μόνο τα μέλη της, αλλά όλο τον κόσμο. Οπως λοιπόν ανανεώνεται η φύσις, έτσι χρειάζεται και εμείς να ανανεωθούμε στα δρώμενα της ενορίας μας. Να εξετάσουμε αν υπακούμε συλλογικά στην εντολή του Χριστού. Να κυττάξουμε πίσω μας αυτοκριτικά, και σαν χριστιανοί που είμαστε και γνωρίζουμε από αλλαγή και μετάνοια, να εντοπίσουμε τυχόν παραλείψεις που έγιναν, αναζητώντας τρόπους να τις διορθώσουμε. Οι παλιοί έλεγαν: «Αν συνεχίζεις αυτά που έκανες, τότε θα παίρνεις μιά μερίδα από τα ίδια». Λίγα εμπόδια παρουσιάζουν μεγαλύτερη πρόκληση γιά την ανάπτυξη μιάς ενορίας, όσο η αντίσταση στην αλλαγή. Το ότι οι άνθρωποι φοβούνται τις αλλαγές είναι φυσικό. Η αλλαγή έχει να κάνει με το άγνωστο, και οι άνθρωποι φοβούνται όσα πράγματα δεν γνωρίζουν ή δεν καταλαβαίνουν. Ο φόβος της αλλαγής όμως έχει πνευματικές και θεολογικές επιπτώσεις. Εν τούτοις οι Χριστιανοί, όπως μας λέει σχετικά ο Απόστολος Παύλος, είναι εξ ορισμού άνθρωποι που αλλάζουν, ξεκινώντας από την αμαρτία και επιζητώντας να γίνουν άγιοι, «πορευόμενοι από δόξης εις δόξαν» (Β Κορ. 3:18). Το Βάπτισμα είναι μιά αλλαγή, η Εξομολόγηση και η Μετάνοια είναι μιά άλλη. Η ζωή κοντά στον Χριστό είναι γεμάτη αλλαγές που δεν τρομάζουν τον Χριστιανό. Αδελφοί, αν επιθυμούμε να αναπτυχθεί η ενορία μας και να εκπληρώσει την αποστολή του Χριστού στον κόσμο, τότε είναι αναγκαίο να εξετάζουμε συχνά ποιοί είμαστε και που πάμε. Σας προσκαλώ να προχωρήσουμε μαζί σ αυτήν την υπέροχη περιπέτεια, και να επαναβεβαιώσουμε ξανά την αποστολή μας στον κόσμο. Τότε θα νοιώσουμε ότι ο Χριστός είναι μαζί μας, και ότι ο Χριστιανισμός είναι ένας «αλλοιώτικος» τρόπος ζωής γεμάτος πνευματικές χαρές. Εύχομαι η Χάρις του Κυρίου ημών Ιησού Χριστού να είναι παντα μαζί σας

4 My dearest parishioners, Christos Anesti A NOTE FROM OUR PARISH COUNCIL PRESIDENT Forty days of spiritual preparation, fasting, repentance, prayer, and self control bring us to Holy Week, where we relive in a short period of time the most important part of the life of our Savior and Lord, Jesus Christ. The mystical supper, the crucifixion, the burial and the resurrection of Christ constitute the very heart and center of this Great Week. On Holy Friday our church was beautifully decorated and full of faithful followers and our chanter and choir performed the lamentations beautifully, accompanied by those in attendance. We took the Epitaphios outside and around before it was dismantled. During the Anastasi service, our church was once again filled with faithful and it was very encouraging to see many new faces in our church. Many people stayed for the Divine Liturgy after Father Konstantinos proclaimed Christos Anesti, and enjoyed a nice reception in the upstairs hall at the end. I would like to thank Father Konstantinos for his spiritual guidance, great work, and patience during this spiritually demanding period. Thank you Presbytera Anna and Eleni for your constant support. Thank you to our chanter and choir for their many hours of great performance during Holy Week. Thank you to the altar boys for assisting Father every day during Holy Week. Thank you to all who helped decorate the Epitaphio. Thank you to our Philoptochos Ladies for preparing the red eggs. Thank you Petro and Aphrodite for assisting in selecting and purchasing all the flowers every year for the Epitaphio. Thank you Eleni, Arthur, and Dorothea for cleaning the church and decorating the icons. Thank you to our secretaries for assisting in organizing the preparation of the Holy Week. Thank you to Diane for making all of the floral vase arrangements displayed during Holy Week. Finally, I would like to thank all the parish council members for their participation and hard work during the whole period of Pascha. March and April has been a very active period. We celebrated and commemorated the 193 rd anniversary of the revolution of 1821 and paid our respects to hero George Dilboy, in Somerville City Hall, on March 22 nd with a very patriotic program. April 6 th, our church had a dynamic participation in the Greek Independence Day parade organized by the Federation of the Hellenic Association of New England. Our annual Bakaliaro and Palm Sunday functions were once again very well organized and extremely well attended. They are both the most financially successful events after our festival. This year we introduced another event, Parishioner of the Year Luncheon, which was attended by 100 people who enjoyed a great meal and had a lot of fun. It s our belief that many parishioners are unable to participate in the Metropolis awards function honoring the parishioners of the year. This is an opportunity to honor our parishioner of the year, in our church. This year, the award recipient is our Parish Council assistant treasurer, Themis Caulfield aka Cookie. Cookie was born in New Jersey, moved to Somerville in 1968, and has 2 sons & 3 grandchildren. You will always find her at the Pangari on Sundays, and she organizes the monthly Pangari schedule for PC members. She always assists in setting up any function or service we have at Church and she is the one the last ones to leave. She spends the Festival weekend helping to organize, count and keep track of all the money, as well as handling the money for other PC events. She spends countless hours in the office working, assisting, or researching many projects or issues. She always has a smile on her face, is always ready to volunteer, and never refuses to undertake any task. She makes us all look more organized and efficient. She is a loyal and very humble servant of our parish. Cookie, on behalf all of us, congratulations and thank you very much. 5 ΚΑΙ ΣΤΑ ΕΛΛΗΝΙΚΑ... Πολυαγαπημένοι μου ενορίτες, Χριστός Ανέστη Σαράντα ημέρες πνευματικής προετοιμασίας, νηστείας, μετανοίας, προσευχής, και αυτοελέγχου μας φέρνουν στην Μεγάλη Εβδομάδα, όπου ξαναζούμε σε σύντομο χρονικό διάστημα το πιο σημαντικό μέρος της ζωής του Σωτήρα και Κυριού μας, Ιησού Χριστού. Ο Μυστικός Δείπνος, η Σταύρωση, η Ταφή και η Ανάσταση του Χριστού αποτελούν την καρδιά και το επικέντρο αυτής της Μεγάλης Εβδομάδας. Η εκκλησία μας την Μεγάλη Παρασκευή ήταν όμορφα διακοσμημένη και πλήρης πιστών. Ο ψάλτης και η χορωδία μας έψαλαν όμορφα τον Επιτάφιο θρήνο, συνοδευόμενοι από όλους τους πιστούς. Περιφέραμε τον Επιτάφιο στους γύρω δρόμους πριν τον ξεστολίσουμε από τα λουλούδια. Κατά την Λειτουργία της Αναστάσης, η εκκλησία μας ήταν και πάλι γεμάτη με πιστούς και ήταν πολύ ενθαρρυντικό να βλέπει κανείς πολλά νέα πρόσωπα στην εκκλησία μας. Πολλοί άνθρωποι έμειναν κατόπιν για τη Θεία Λειτουργία όπου ο Πατέρας Κωνσταντίνος διακήρυξε το Χριστός Ανέστη. Στο τέλος απόλαυσαν μια ωραία δεξίωση στην επάνω αίθουσα. Θα ήθελα να ευχαριστήσω τον Πατέρα Κωνσταντίνο για την πνευματική καθοδήγηση του, την εξαιρετική δουλειά, και υπομονή κατά τη διάρκεια αυτής της πνευματικά απαιτητικής περιόδου. Σας ευχαριστούμε Πρεσβυτέρα Άννα και Ελένη για τη συνεχή υποστήριξή σας. Ευχαριστούμε τον ψάλτη και την χορωδία μας για τις πολλές ώρες εξαιρετικής απόδοσης κατά τη διάρκεια της Μεγάλης Εβδομάδας. Ευχαριστώ τα αγόρια του Ιερου για την βοήθεια στον Πατέρα Κωνσταντίνο κάθε μέρα κατά τη διάρκεια της Μεγάλης Εβδομάδας. Ευχαριστώ όλους όσους βοήθησαν να διακοσμηθεί ο Επιτάφιος. Ευχαριστούμε τις Κυρίες της Φιλοπτώχου μας για την προετοιμασία των κόκκινων αυγών. Ευχαριστώ τον Πέτρο και την Αφροδίτη για την βοήθεια στην αγορά όλων των λουλουδιών για τον Επιτάφιο κάθε χρόνο. Ευχαριστώ την Ελένη, τον Θανάση, και την Δωροθέα για τον καθαρισμό του ναού και τη διακόσμηση των εικόνων. Ευχαριστώ τις γραμματείς μας για την βοήθεια στην οργάνωση της προετοιμασίας της Μεγάλης Εβδομάδας. Ευχαριστώ την Δήμητρα, για τις συνθέσεις των λουλουδιών στα βάζα. Τέλος, θα ήθελα να ευχαριστήσω όλα τα μέλη του κοινοτικού συμβουλίου για τη συμμετοχή τους και τη σκληρή δουλειά τους κατά τη διάρκεια ολόκληρης της περιόδου του Πάσχα. Ο Μάρτιος και ο Απρίλιος υπήρξαν μια πολύ δραστήρια περίοδος. Γιορτάσαμε και τιμήσαμε την 193η επέτειο της επανάστασης του 1821 και αποτίσαμε φόρο τιμής στον ήρωα Γιώργο Διλβόη στο δημαρχείο του Σομερβιλ στις 22 Μαρτίου, με μια πολύ πατριωτική εκδήλωση. Στις 6 Απριλίου η εκκλησία μας είχε μια δυναμική συμμετοχή στην παρέλαση για την Ημέρα της Ελληνικής Ανεξαρτησίας που διοργανώθηκε από την Ομοσπονδία των Ελληνικών Σωματείων της Νέας Αγγλίας. Το Ετήσιο γεύμα του Μπακαλιάρου και της Κυριακής των Βαΐων ήταν για άλλη μια φορά πολύ καλά οργανωμένο και με πολύ καλή συμμετοχή. Είναι και οι δύο οι πιο οικονομικά επιτυχημένες εκδηλώσεις μετά από το φεστιβάλ μας. Φέτος εισηγάγαμε μια άλλη εκδήλωση. Το γεύμα για τον Ενορίτη της Χρονιάς, στο οποίο συμμετείχαν 100 άτομα που απόλαυσαν ένα υπέροχο γεύμα και ολοι είχαν πολύ διασκέδαση. Είναι πεποίθησή μας ότι πολλοί ενορίτες δεν είναι σε θέση να συμμετέχουν στη δεξίωση για τα βραβεία της Μητρόπολης τιμώντας τους ενορίτες του έτους. Αυτή είναι λοιπόν, μια ευκαιρία να τιμήσουμε τον ενορίτη της χρονιάς στην εκκλησία μας μπροστά σε όλους. Φέτος, ο αποδέκτης του βραβείου είναι η βοηθός ταμία του Ενοριακού Συμβουλίου, Θέμης Caulfield aka Cookie. Η Cookie Γεννήθηκε στο New Jersey, μετακόμισε στο Somerville το 1968, και έχει 2 γιους & 3 εγγόνια. Θα την βρείτε πάντα στο παγκάρι τις Κυριακές. Η Cookie οργανώνει το μηνιαίο χρονοδιάγραμμα Pangari για τα μέλη του PC. Βοηθά πάντα στην οργάνωση οποιασδήποτε διακονίας ή υπηρεσίας που έχουμε στην Εκκλησία και είναι πάντα η τελευταία που φεύγει. Περνάει το Σαββατοκύριακο στα Φεστιβάλ βοηθώντας στην οργάνωση, μετρώντας και παρακολουθώντας τις εισπράξεις, κάνει το μέτρημα των χρημάτων για τις άλλες εκδηλώσεις του ΔΣ. Περνά αμέτρητες ώρες στο γραφείο εργαζόμενη, υποστηρίζοντας ή ερευνώντας πολλές εργασίες ή θέματα. Έχει πάντα ένα χαμόγελο στα χειλη. Είναι πάντα έτοιμη να προσφέρει εθελοντική υπηρεσία, και ποτέ δεν αρνείται να αναλάβει οποιοδήποτε διακόνημα. Μας κάνει όλους μας να φαινόμαστε πιο οργανωμένοι και αποτελεσματικοι. Είναι μια πιστή και πολύ ταπεινή υπηρέτης της ενορίας μας. Παξιμάδι, εξ ονόματος όλων μας, συγχαρητήρια και σε ευχαριστούμε πάρα πολύ. Θα ήθελα να υπενθυμίσω σε όλους για τις προσεχείς εκδηλώσεις μας. 6 The Psaltic Art as «Ψυχαγωγός» by Grammenos Karanos, Ph.D., Assistant Professor of Byzantine Music, Holy Cross Greek Orthodox School of Theology Reverend Fr. Constantine, I would like to thank you for the honor of inviting me to say a few things to the congregation of the Dormition Church, a parish that is always in my heart, since it was here that I was first appointed a Protopsaltis sixteen years ago, it was here that His Eminence Metropolitan Methodios of Boston ordained me to the clerical rank of cantor, and my wife and I have always received the love of the priests and parishioners of this church. I know that the entire community and you personally value and respect Byzantine Music or, as it should more properly be called, the Psaltic Art. You have a protopsaltis who offers his ministry with zeal and dedication, and a choir that draws its inspiration and repertoire from the great works of the old Byzantine composers. Therefore, what I am about to say will not be news to this type of audience, yet I will do my ecclesiastical obedience to the presbyter and speak briefly on the subject The Psaltic Art as Ψυχαγωγός. The Greek word ψυχαγωγός and its derivative ψυχαγωγία are usually translated as entertainer and entertainment respectively. Thus, a very loose translation of the title of my talk might be The Psaltic Art as Entertainment. But this would thoroughly miss the point, since the original meaning of ψυχαγωγός is very different. The word is derived from ψυχή and ἄγω and literally means the guide of souls, the one that guides souls unto better, higher things. This is precisely the true function of the Psaltic Art. It is to guide the souls of the faithful Orthodox Christians to better things. What are these better things and by what road does the Psaltic Art lead to them? There are three such roads. One road is horizontal and intertemporal. The second one is horizontal and interspatial. The third one is vertical. Thus, we can imagine the Psaltic Art as having the shape of a three-dimensional cross, which, like the Cross of Christ, unites the heavens with the earth and stands in a conspicuous place, so that it can be seen by all and and embrace everyone and everything. Let us look at these three roads separately. First, I mentioned the horizontal and intertemporal road. What do I mean by this? I mean that the Psaltic Art guides the minds and hearts of the faithful back and forward in time and, as such, unites them with the departed and the ones to come. It leads the mind to the Ottoman period, during which the enslaved Orthodox Greeks learned their language and preserved their customs and traditions by studying the Psalter and the Octoechos, the two basic books of the cantor s stand. It leads the mind even further back, to the age of imperial glory and ascetic struggles, the age when the masterpieces of Christian hymnography were composed and chanted for the first time; masterpieces such as Romanos the Melodist s kontakia, John of Damascus and Andrew of Crete s kanons, as well as the ancient simple hymns, such as Christ is risen, Through the intercessions of the Theotokos, and Save us, O Son of God, whose composers are unknown, yet all the faithful have been chanting them in the same manner for centuries. And, finally, it leads the mind to the ancient Greeks, whose music had the same core essence and characteristics as the Psaltic Art, as has been amply demonstrated by modern musicology and by the examination of ancient theoretical treatises by the Pythagoreans, Euclid of Alexandria, Aristoxenos, Aristides Quintilianus, and many others. This monophonic music, which in its most simple and unadorned form can be chanted by young and old, men and women, accomplished protopsaltae and novices alike, unites us with our ancestors, but also with the future generations that will praise God in the same fashion. This unity of the generations is, if I may borrow the phrase from the Book of Genesis, very good. The second road by which the Psaltic Art guides the soul is the one I called horizontal and interspatial. Better yet, interspatial and interpersonal. Why? Because psalmody, as we saw, unites the faithful with the departed fathers and brothers and the future sons and daughters, but, more importantly, it unites him with the contemporary fellow travelers to the Kingdom of Heaven, regardless of where on earth they are. With one mouth and one heart everybody together chants Κύριε ἐλέησον, everybody together chants Τῇ Ὑπερμάχῳ, everybody together chants Ἐν τῇ Γεννήσει τὴν παρθενίαν ἐφύλαξας, or at least everybody together should chant. We all become one voice, one cry, one soul, ultimately we become one body, the Body of Christ, the Church. Of course, the Psaltic Art is primarily the liturgical vestment of the Greek sacred words, since the same holy fathers and mothers that composed the words also composed the music. Nevertheless, since it is a sacred art, it is not and cannot be partial. Rather it can serve equally well as the liturgical vestment of the sacred words in other languages.

7 The Psaltic Art as «Ψυχαγωγός» ( Continued) A solid proof of this is the chanting of the Arabs, the chanting of the Romanians, and now the chanting of the Americans. At Holy Cross School of Theology all the services are bilingual, but this does not distract the mind because the Psaltic Art provides an aesthetic uniformity to the worship experience, and unites the languages, the cultures, the backgrounds of all the worshippers. Again here the Psaltic Art ψυχαγωγεῖ, it guides the souls to unity and oneness of mind and this is also very good. Finally, let us look at what I called the vertical road of ψυχαγωγία. This is the most significant one because it does not simply guide, but it guides downward and upward. First, downward. It guides the divine truths from heaven to earth, from the celestial spheres to the hearts of humans. The Church considers all hymnology as being divinely inspired and, according to tradition, some hymns, such Holy, holy, holy, It is truly right, and Glory to God in the highest, have an otherworldly origin. Angels composed and taught them to men. But more importantly, the Psaltic Art guides upward. It guides the soul from earth to heaven. Chanting is not simply musical notes, scales, harmonies and rhythms, it is, above all, prayer. It is a union of the creature with the Creator. This is why the Psaltic Art is by its very nature simple, without unnecessary airs and graces, as Photios Kontoglou used to say. It must be simple, so as not to belong to the few that have specialized musical knowledge and skills, but rather to anyone that wishes to travel with it as a guide from earth to heaven. Once again, this is the ultimate goal of the Psaltic Art, to guide souls to better, higher, more perfect things. In conclusion, I will quote the words of a contemporary God-bearing father, Elder Timotheos Tzanis the Cretan, who fell asleep in the Lord in 1991: The cantor who chants with the grace of God is captured by the Holy Spirit, he does not live in this world, he ascends to the heavens! And he imparts this grace to the entire congregation! If only we had eyes to see the rays of light that come out of the cantor s mouth and fall on the heads of the faithful! Another contemporary saint, Elder Paisios the Athonite, who fell asleep in 1994, explains what it means for a cantor to chant with the grace of God: What matters is reverence. Without reverence chanting is flat; it sounds like an instrument that is out of tune, clink clunk. And it doesn t matter whether one chants in a loud or a soft voice; what matters is to chant with reverence. Then soft chanting is humble, sweet; it isn t drowsy. And loud chanting is intense and heartfelt; it isn t harsh. Father Makarios Bouzikas had a thunderous voice, but he chanted naturally, with reverence and longing; he made you feel that his heart lifted off, and made your heart lift off too. An old monk used to say, it pierces your guts. Let us also approach this sacred heritage of the Psaltic Art with reverence, let us transmit it to our children, so that the faithful can always feel their guts pierced and their minds detached from the earth and ascending to the high heavens, where abides the Triune God, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. 8 Η Ψαλτική Τέχνη ως «Ψυχαγωγός» του Δρος. Γραμμένου Καράνου, Επικούρου Καθηγητού της Θεολογικής Σχολής Τιμίου Σταυρού Αιδεσιμολογιώτατε π. Κωνσταντίνε, Σας ευχαριστώ για την τιμή που μου κάνατε να με προσκαλέσετε να πω δυο λόγια στο εκκλησίασμα της Κοιμήσεως της Θεοτόκου, μιας ενορίας που έχω πάντα μέσα στην καρδιά μου, αφού από εδώ ξεκίνησα πριν από δεκαέξι περίπου χρόνια την ψαλτική μου σταδιοδρομία, εδώ χειροθετήθηκα στην τάξη των ιεροψαλτών από τον Σεβασμιώτατο Μητροπολίτη Βοστώνης κ. Μεθόδιο κι εδώ οι ιερείς και οι ενορίτες περιέβαλαν για χρόνια κι εμένα και τη σύζυγό μου με στοργή και αγάπη. Ξέρω ότι κι εσείς και όλη η κοινότητα αγαπάτε τη Βυζαντινή Μουσική ή, όπως είναι σωστότερο να την ονομάζουμε, την Ψαλτική Τέχνη. Έχετε έναν αφοσιωμένο πρωτοψάλτη που διακονεί το ιερό αναλόγιο με πολύ ζήλο και προσήλωση, έχετε και μία χορωδία που αντλεί πάντοτε την έμπνευση και το ρεπερτόριό της από τα μεγάλα έργα των παλαιών βυζαντινών μελουργών. Επομένως, αυτά τα λίγα που θα πω λοιπόν είναι ίσως καταλληλότερα για άλλο ακροατήριο, λιγότερο υποψιασμένο, θα κάνω όμως την εκκλησιαστική υπακοή στον πρεσβύτερο και θα μιλήσω, με κάθε δυνατή συντομία, με θέμα «Η Ψαλτική Τέχνη ως Ψυχαγωγός». Η λέξη «ψυχαγωγία» έχει μάλλον εκφυλιστεί σήμερα, καθώς συνήθως σημαίνει τη διασκέδαση, καμιά φορά μάλιστα την κακώς νοουμένη διασκέδαση, τη φτηνή ευχαρίστηση. Η αρχική σημασία της λέξης όμως είναι άλλη. «Ψυχαγωγός» είναι αυτός που άγει, οδηγεί δηλαδή, τις ψυχές. Τις οδηγεί «επί τα κρείττω», προς τα ανώτερα και καλύτερα, όχι «επί τα χείρω». Αυτή ακριβώς είναι και η βαθύτερη λειτουργία της Ψαλτικής Τέχνης. Οδηγεί τις ψυχές των πιστών Ορθοδόξων Χριστιανών επί τα κρείττω. Ποια είναι αυτά «τα κρείττω» και πώς οδηγεί σ αυτά η Ψαλτική; Τρεις είναι οι κατευθύνσεις της αγωγής αυτής. Η μία είναι οριζόντια και διαχρονική. Η δεύτερη είναι οριζόντια και διατοπική. Η τρίτη είναι κάθετη. Μπορούμε λοιπόν να τη φανταστούμε σε σχήμα τρισδιάστατου σταυρού που, όπως ο Σταυρός του Κυρίου, ενώνει τα άνω και τα κάτω και στέκεται σε θέση εποπτική, ώστε να αγκαλιάζει τους πάντες και τα πάντα. Ας δούμε αυτές τις τρεις κατευθύνσεις ξεχωριστά. Και πρώτα πρώτα την οριζόντια και διαχρονική κατεύθυνση. Τι εννοώ μ αυτό; Εννοώ ότι η Ψαλτική οδηγεί τον νου και την καρδιά του προσευχομένου πιστού και μάλιστα του Έλληνα πίσω αλλά και μπροστά στον χρόνο και τον ενώνει με τους προαπελθόντας και τους ερχομένους. Τον οδηγεί στην περίοδο της Τουρκοκρατίας, κατά την οποία οι υπόδουλοι Έλληνες μάθαιναν τη γλώσσα και διατηρούσαν τα ήθη και τα έθιμά τους, ξεκινώντας από την Οκτώηχο και το Ψαλτήριο, τα δύο βασικά βιβλία του αναλογίου. Τον οδηγεί και πιο πίσω ακόμη, στην εποχή της αυτοκρατορικής δόξας και των ασκητικών αγώνων των αγίων, την εποχή που γράφτηκαν και πρωτοψάλθηκαν τα αριστουργήματα της υμνογραφίας, τα κοντάκια του Ρωμανού του Μελωδού, οι κανόνες του Ιωάννου Δαμασκηνού και του Ανδρέα Κρήτης, οι αρχαίοι απλοί ύμνοι, όπως Χριστὸς ἀνέστη, Ταῖς πρεσβείαις τῆς Θεοτόκου, Σῶσον ἡμᾶς, Υἱὲ Θεοῦ, που κανείς δεν ξέρει ποιος τους συνέθεσε, όλοι όμως ξέρουν να τους ψάλλουν με τον ίδιο τρόπο εδώ και αιώνες. Τον οδηγεί, τέλος, και στο απώτερο παρελθόν, στην αρχαία Ελλάδα, όπου το βασικό υφάδι της μουσικής ήταν το ίδιο κι απαράλλαχτο με αυτό που διαφυλάχτηκε στην Ψαλτική Τέχνη, όπως έχουν περίτρανα αποδείξει οι μουσικολογικές έρευνες και η μελέτη αρχαίων μουσικοθεωρητικών συγγραμμάτων, όπως των πυθαγορείων, του Ευκλείδη, του Αριστόξενου, του Αριστείδη Κοϊντιλιανού και άλλων πολλών. Αυτή λοιπόν η μονοφωνική μουσική, που στην πιο απλή έκφρασή της μπορεί να ψαλεί από μικρούς και μεγάλους, άντρες και γυναίκες, φτασμένους πρωτοψάλτες και αρχάρια μαθητούδια, μας ενώνει με τους προγόνους μας, αλλά μας ενώνει και με τις μελλοντικές γενιές που με τον ίδιο τρόπο θα υμνούν τον Θεό και τα μεγαλεία του. Κι αυτή η ένωση των γενεών μέσα στο διάβα της ιστορίας είναι, για να δανειστώ τη φράση από το βιβλίο της Γενέσεως, «καλή λίαν». Αυτός λοιπόν είναι ο πρώτος τρόπος με τον οποίο η Ψαλτική μάς άγει επί τα κρείττω, επί τα «καλά λίαν». Η άλλη κατεύθυνση της «ψυχαγωγικής» διάστασης της Ψαλτικής είναι αυτή που ονόμασα οριζόντια και διατοπική. Διατοπική και διαπροσωπική καλύτερα θα έπρεπε να πω. Κι αυτό γιατί η ψαλμωδία ενώνει μεν τον πιστό με τους προαπελθόντας πατέρας και αδελφούς και τους μελλοντικούς υιούς και θυγατέρες, αλλά πολύ περισσότερο τον ενώνει με τους παρόντας και συνοδοιπόρους, σε όποιο μέρος και αν βρίσκονται. «Ἐν ἑνὶ στόματι καὶ μιᾷ καρδίᾳ», με ένα στόμα και μια καρδιά όλοι μαζί ψάλλουν Κύριε ἐλέησον, όλοι ψάλλουν Τῇ Ὑπερμάχῳ, όλοι ψάλλουν Ἐν τῇ Γεννήσει τὴν παρθενίαν ἐφύλαξας, ή τουλάχιστον όλοι μαζί θα πρέπει να ψάλλουν. Όλοι γίνονται μία φωνή, μία βοή, μία ψυχή, σε τελική ανάλυση γίνονται ένα σώμα, το Σώμα του Χριστού, η Εκκλησία. Βέβαια η Ψαλτική είναι πάνω απ' όλα το ιερό άμφιο του ελληνικού ιερού λόγου και μάλιστα προστάτευσε την ελληνική γλώσσα σε εποχές δύσκολες. Εν τούτοις, ως ιερή που είναι, δε μεροληπτεί. Μπορεί με την ίδια ευκολία να επενδύσει τα ιερά λόγια και σε άλλες γλώσσες.

9 Η Ψαλτική Τέχνη ως «Ψυχαγωγός» ( συνέχεια ) Απόδειξη η ψαλμωδία των Αράβων, η ψαλμωδία των Ρουμάνων, και τώρα πλέον η ψαλμωδία των Αμερικανών. Στη Θεολογική μας Σχολή οι ακολουθίες είναι δίγλωσσες, η Ψαλτική όμως όχι μόνο προσδίδει αισθητική ομοιομορφία στη λατρεία, αλλά ενώνει τις γλώσσες, ενώνει τους πολιτισμούς, ενώνει όλους τους πιστούς. Κι εδώ λοιπόν «ψυχαγωγεί», «άγει τις ψυχές» σε ένωση και ομόνοια κι είναι κι αυτό «καλόν λίαν». Τέλος, έχουμε την κάθετη κατεύθυνση της ψυχαγωγίας. Κι αυτή είναι η πιο σημαντική, γιατί δεν άγει απλώς, αλλά κατάγει και ανάγει. Πρώτον, κατάγει. Οδηγεί τα θεία νόηματα από πάνω προς τα κάτω, απ τους ουράνιους θόλους προς τις καρδιές των ανθρώπων. Όλη η υμνολογία θεωρείται θεόπνευστη και μάλιστα κάποιοι ύμνοι, όπως το Ἅγιος, ἅγιος, ἅγιος, το Ἄξιόν ἐστιν, το Δόξα ἐν ὑψίστοις Θεῷ καὶ ἐπὶ γῆς εἰρήνη, κατά την παράδοση έχουν υπερκόσμια, άυλη θα λέγαμε, προέλευση. Άγγελοι τους συνέθεσαν και από αγγέλους τους διδάχθηκαν οι άνθρωποι. Και το σπουδαιότερον, η Ψαλτική ανάγει, ανεβάζει την ψυχή από κάτω προς τα πάνω. Δεν είναι μόνο νότες και κλίμακες και αρμονίες και ρυθμοί, είναι κυρίως προσευχή. Είναι ένωση του πλάσματος με τον Πλάστη. Και είναι από τη φύση της απλή η Ψαλτική, χωρίς περιττά καμώματα και φτιασίδια, όπως έλεγε ο Φώτιος Κόντογλου, για να μην είναι αποκλειστικό προνόμιο των λίγων που έχουν ειδικές μουσικές γνώσεις, αλλά να ανήκει σε όλους όσοι θέλουν μέσω αυτής να κάνουν το ταξίδι απ τα γήινα στα επουράνια. Θα το επαναλάβω λοιπόν ότι αυτός είναι ο τελικός σκοπός της Ψαλτικής, η ψυχαγώγηση προς τα κρείττω, η καθοδήγηση των ψυχών προς τα καλύτερα, τα ανώτερα, τα τελειότερα. Θα ολοκληρώσω παραθέτοντας τον λόγο ενός σύγχρονου θεοφόρου πατρός, του γέροντος Τιμοθέου Τζανή του Κρητικού, που εκοιμήθη το 1991: «Ο ψάλτης που ψάλλει με την χάρη του Θεού, καταλαμβάνεται από το Πνεύμα το Άγιον, δεν ζει στον κόσμο τούτο, ανεβαίνει στους ουρανούς! Και μεταδίδει την χάρη και σ' όλο το εκκλησίασμα! Αν είχαμε μάτια να βλέπαμε από το στόμα του ψάλτη να φεύγουν σαν δεσμίδες φωτός και να πέφτουν στα κεφάλια των πιστών!» Κι ένας άλλος σύγχρονος άγιος, ο γέρων Παΐσιος ο Αγιορείτης, που εκοιμήθη το 1994, εξηγεί τι σημαίνει να ψάλλει ο ψάλτης με τη χάρη του Θεού: «Το παν είναι η ευλάβεια. Χωρίς ευλάβεια η ψαλτική είναι ξεθυμασμένη μοιάζει με όργανο ξεκουρντισμένο, που κάνει γκλιν-γκλιν. Ούτε έχει σημασία αν ψάλλη κανείς δυνατά ή σιγανά σημασία έχει να ψάλλη με ευλάβεια. Τότε το σιγανό ψάλσιμο είναι ταπεινό, γλυκό δεν είναι κοιμισμένο. Και το δυνατό είναι έντονο και καρδιακό δεν είναι άγριο. Ο πατήρ Μακάριος Μπουζίκας είχε βροντερή φωνή, αλλά έψελνε φυσικά, με ευλάβεια και με καημό ένιωθες ότι ξεκοβόταν η δική του καρδιά, και ξεκολλούσε και η δική σου. Σου κάνει τα τζιέρια άνω κάτω, έλεγε ένα γεροντάκι.» Είθε κι εμείς να προσεγγίσουμε αυτήν την ιερά παρακαταθήκη της Ψαλτικής Τέχνης με ευλάβεια, να τη μεταδώσουμε στα παιδιά μας, ώστε και στις επόμενες γενιές τα τζιέρια των πιστών να γίνονται άνω κάτω και ο νους τους να ξεκολλάει από κάτω και να ανεβαίνει προς τα πάνω! Δέσποτα συγχώρησον τας ανομίας ημίν. Αγιε επίσκεψαι και ίασαι τας ασθενείας ημών, ένεκεν του ονόματος Σου. Κύριε ελέησον, Κύριε ελέησον, Κύριε ελέησον. Πάτερ ημών ο εν τοις ουρανοίς... Κύριε, Σ ευχαριστώ γι αυτήν την Αγια ώρα που με τ αμαρτωλά μου χέρια μ αξιώνεις να ζυμώνω τα Πανάχραντα Δώρα της αγάπης Σου. Σε παρακαλώ κατάπεμψον το Πανάγιό Σου Πνεύμα που ευλογεί όλα τα Μυστήρια της Εκκλησίας, να ευλογήσει και τούτα τα Δώρα για να γίνουν καλά και ευπρόσδεκτα στο Αγιό Σου θυσιαστήριο. Και ας με αξιώνεις να Σου τα προσφέρω πάντοτε ενσυνείδητα. 1 2/3 cup χλιαρό νερό ½ tsp αλάτι ½ tsp μαγιά ξερή 4 cups άσπρο αλεύρι 1 cup σιμιγδάλι ψιλό (semolina) για να γίνει σφιχτή ζύμη ΟΔΗΓΙΕΣ ΚΑΙ ΥΛΙΚΑ ΓΙΑ 1 ΠΡΟΣΦΟΡΟ ΓΙΑ ΤΑΨΙ ΜΕ ΕΛΑΤΗΡΙΟ ( SPRINGFORM) 9 ίντσες Τα ζυμώνω ολα μαζί, να γίνει σφιχτή ζύμη. Αρκετή ώρα. Την αφήνω σκεπασμένη με ζελατίνα (wrap) και πανί από πάνω μέχρι να φουσκώσει. Περίπου 1 ½ - 2 ώρες. Το ξαναζυμώνω και ετοιμάζομαι να το βάλω στο ταψάκι. Είμαι καθαρή και αφού βάλω μπροστά μου την εικόνα της Παναγίας με το καντήλι αναμμένο, λιβανίζω τον χώρο γύρω μου και διαβάζω την ειδική προσευχή. Το πρόσφορο συμβολίζει την Παναγία από όπου θα βγει ο αμνός (ο Χριστός) για να γίνει η Θεία Λειτουργία. Χωρίζω την ζύμη μου σε 2 ίσα μέρη και φτιάχνω 2 στρογγυλά λίγο μικρότερα απο την διάμετρο του ταψιού μου. Αυτά συμβολίζουν τις 2 φύσεις του Χριστού. Ανθρώπινη και Θεϊκή. Τα βάζω στο ταψί το ένα πάνω στο άλλο, αφού αλείψω με λίγο νερό το 1ο για να κολλήσει καλά το 2ο. Αλευρώνω την σφραγίδα μου χωρίς να πάει αλεύρι μέσα στις εγκωπές. Βάζω λίγο αλεύρι πάνω στο ζυμάρι και το τρίβω με την παλάμη μου κυκλικά παντού. Πατάω την σφραγίδα με δύναμη στο κέντρο της ζύμης και κάνω και στριφτές κινήσεις δεξιά-αριστερά χωρίς να την σηκώσω. Τώρα θα απλώσει η ζύμη και θα γεμίσει ολο το περιθώριο που αφήσαμε. Κάνω 12 τρύπες γύρω από την σφραγίδα κυκλικά. Συμβολίζει τους 12 Αποστόλους. Αν δεν είναι πολύ σφιχτή η ζύμη, δεν είναι κακό να αφήσω την σφραγίδα πάνω στο πρόσφορο να ανέβει μαζί με το ζυμάρι και να την βγάλω αμέσως πριν ψηθεί. Αρκεί να μην καλύπτεται η σφραγίδα από ζυμάρι για να βγει εύκολα. Το σκεπάζω με μία πετσέτα και από πάνω με ένα νάϋλον, και το αφήνω περίπου 30 σε ζεστό μέρος. Οταν ανέβει σχεδόν μέχρι το χείλος του ταψιού, βγάζω προσεκτικά την σφραγίδα. Κάνω 4 τρύπες γύρω από τον «αμνό» *. Ψήνω το πρόσφορο στην αρχή στους 325 F F για περίπου ή μέχρι να ροδίσει. Δεν πρέπει να ξεροψηθεί. Το αφήνω λίγη ώρα μέσα στον σβηστό φούρνο για να μην σκάσει από την αλλαγή θερμοκρασίας. Μόλις το βγάλω απο τον φούρνο, το ξεφορμάρω και το τυλίγω αμέσως σε μια καθαρή πετσέτα και το αφήνω να κρυώσει τυλιγμένο. Ετσι θα μαλακώσει η κόρα και θα μπορεί να το κόψει εύκολα ο Ιερέας στην Προσκομιδή. Η σφραγίδα πρέπει να έχει τουλάχιστον 6 διάμετρο για το ταψί που αναφέραμε. Και η λίγο μεγαλύτερη κάνει. Οι μικρές σφραγίδες δεν εχουν μεγάλο και ευκρινή αμνό και δεν μπορούν εύκολα να ξεχωρίσουν τα διάφορα τμήματα που χρειάζονται γιά την Θεία Λειτουργία. In March, the GOYAns and their advisors processed in the church Sunday of Orthodoxy icon procession. Later the parents and GOYA advisors took some time to get to know each other better and have a feedback gathering together. The GOYAns ended the month by serving at the Bakaliaro Luncheon on March 23rd. On May 10 the GOYAns are celebrating the mothers of the community with a Mother's Day Dinner Dance. They have been preparing for months and look forward to seeing you all there. Tickets are already on sale. Buy yours today and celebrate your mother! The following weekend, on May 16-18, the GOYAns are looking forward to a retreat weekend led by Fr. Konstantinos at the Metropolis Camp in Contoocook, NH. We wish you continued strength! Hello everyone, It has been a busy time for everyone with many events going on and the St. Catherine s Philoptochos Society couldn t have done it without the help of our members and the parishioners who supported us. I would like to thank all the ladies who helped decorate the Epitaphio on Good Friday and brought food for our potluck. I would also like to thank the children for decorating the colored Easter eggs with a golden cross. It was nice to see everyone participating in our Don t forget that we cook for the Homeless Shelter once a month. If anyone is interested in cooking or making any monetary donations, please, see one of the Philoptochos Board Members. We would like to thank the following people who gave monetary donations for the Homeless Shelter. 18 Dear friends of Greek School, GREEK SCHOOL With God's help, we are moving towards the end of the school year. The children have enriched their knowledge in the Greek language. They learned to speak better Greek, have become more comfortable to read and write Greek without major errors. They have been very enthusiastic about the very interesting mythology that they learned (and viewed various DVDs). The kindergarten and first grade children have learned their lessons and material through amusing and educational ways. The older children have learned to express their ideas, orally and written. They have learned geography, history, and grammar. We have had an amazing school year enriched with a lot of learning and magnificent holiday programs. Come and admire the children once again, at the end of the year celebration on Sunday, June 15th after the Divine Liturgy. Τα παιδιά πλούτισαν τις γνώσεις τους στην ελληνική γλώσσα. Έμαθαν να μιλούν καλύτερα ελληνικά, να διαβάζουν πιό άνετα, να γράφουν χωρίς μεγάλα λάθη. Ενθουσιάστηκαν με την τόσο ενδιαφέρουσα μυθολογία μας (είδαν διάφορα DVD). Τα παιδιά του νηπιαγωγείου και της Α έμαθαν, διασκεδάζοντας, την ύλη που είχε καθοριστεί. Τα μεγάλυτερα παιδιά έμαθαν να γράφουν τις ιδέες τους. Έμαθαν γεωγραφία, ιστορία, γραμματική. Η σχολική χρονιά, ήταν καταπληκτική. Κι οι σχολικές γιορτές, επίσης. 22 We continue our celebration of the great fifty days of Easter. To most of the world around us Easter is just one day. But we still celebrate, in our hearts and with each other at Sunday Liturgy. Liturgy does some of its best work using music, signs and symbols that in turn elicit responses from those assembled. When we feel water sprinkled on us during Easter, we can t help but feel a sense of being washed, renewed, made clean. We don t need to read about what the water means to us we feel it. We don't need to study music theory or the lives of composers in order to let music make us rise from our everyday routines and transport us to the very gates of heaven. We sing some of our most beautiful hymns during Eastertide. And as we celebrate all the way to Pentecost, June 8, we literally end the choir year with a bang! As we live our lives of love and service, the Easter Season is a wonderful time to join choir. We were saved by Christ in order to serve and what better and more joyful way can there be than singing for the Church? A NOTE FROM CHOIR Α Liturgical Music Ministry of our Parish of behind-the-scenes planning that has to take place in order to prepare for the upcoming choir year and any special events. This is also a time to get new choir members up to speed learning the Sunday liturgical music. We have acquired about four new members this year. Not bad, huh? 23 Coffee hour is an opportunity to welcome visitors, guests, and others to our Dormition community. It is a simple expression of hospitality. After celebrating Liturgy together, we greet and welcome others to the community center, just as we would welcome guests in our home. All parishioners are encouraged to host a coffee hour. You can host it alone or with others. Simple fruits, cookies or cakes, and juice for the children are all that is needed. We make the coffee and assist with set-up and clean-up. Or for a fee the Parish Council can purchase the food and set up for you. 24 The PTO Committee wishes everyone Christos Anesti. We hope that you and your family had a Happy Easter. On April 12, 2014, our Dormition families participated in our annual St. Lazarus Retreat at our Church. The children learned how to make Lazarakia with Presbytera Anna and they made palm crosses with our parishioners. Father offered confession to all our interested children. We sincerely appreciate Presbytera for taking the time to assist the children with this activity as well as the families who attended this retreat. It is important that our children are taught our Orthodox traditions otherwise they will be forgotten. On Easter Sunday morning, our children participated in the annual Easter Egg Hunt after the Agape Service. The children enjoyed this activity. We thank Mrs. Raschi for organizing the event this year. The PTO Committee on March 16, 2014, held a meeting where we unanimously voted to donate two (2) scholarships to our children so that they may enjoy the Metropolis Camp in New Hampshire this summer. We request that a parent(s) of any interested child contact a committee member for specific qualifying details for these camp scholarships. We also made a donation to GOYA in support of their upcoming Mother s Day Dance in May. On June 15, 2014, the PTO has scheduled its annual BBQ fundraiser after the liturgy. We hope that you will attend and support this event. There will be activities planned for the children such as wiffle ball and a special guest visitor to entertain our children. Ticket sales will begin in May. The cost of the ticket will be $15.00 per adult. Children 16 and younger eat for free. This is an all you can eat BBQ buffet until supplies last. Advance purchase required. If you would like to volunteer to assist us with preparing for this event then please contact us. Please bring your children so they may have fun and enjoy each other s company. There will be plenty of sunshine and laughter. Finally, on June 29, 2014, the PTO will conduct a committee meeting and hold elections for new officers of our Ministry. We hope that more parents get involved and join us. Στις 12 Απριλίου, οικογένειες ενοριτών, πήραν μέρος στο ετήσιο Retreat του Λαζάρου, στην εκκλησία μας. Τα παιδιά, διδάχτηκαν από την πρεσβυτέρα Άννα πώς να φτιάχνουν Λαζαράκια και σταυρούς με βάγια. Ο ιερέας, εξομολόγησε τα παιδιά που το ζήτησαν. Ειλικρινά, εκτιμούμε που η πρεσβυτέρα διέθεσε το χρόνο της για να βοηθήσει τα παιδιά σ ότι έφτιαξαν, όπως επίσης, και τις οικογένειες που παρευρέθηκαν. Είναι σπουδαίο, τα παιδιά μας να διδάσκονται τα έθιμά μας, αλλοιώς θα ξεχαστούν. Το πρωί της Κυριακής του Πάσχα, τα παιδιά είχαν το ετήσιο «κυνήγι αυγών», μετά την λειτουργία της Αγάπης. Το χάρηκαν. Ευχαριστούμε την κ. Ράση για την φετεινή οργάνωση. Tο PTO, στις 16 Μαρτίου, συνήλθεσε συμβούλιο και ψήφισε, ομόφωνα, να δωρήσουν 2 χρηματικά βραβεία στα παιδιά, για την κατασκήνωση της Μητρόπολης στο Ν.Η., φέτος το καλοκαίρι. Οι γονείς που ενδιαφέρονται, ας επικοινωνήσουν με μέλη του ΡΤΟ για πληροφορίες. Επίσης το ΡΤΟ έκανε μία δωρεά στη GOYA, για τον χορό της γιορτή της μητέρας το Μάη. Στις 15 Ιουνίου, θα έχουμε το ετήσιο ΒΒQ, μετά τη λειτουργία. Ελπίζουμε να μας ενισχύσετε. Θα υπάρχουν προγράμματα που θα ενθουσιάσουν τα παιδιά, κι ένας σπουδαίος επισκέπτης. Εισητήρια θα πωλούνται αρχές Μαΐου. Εθελοντές, ευπρόσδεκτοι. Επικοινωνήστε μαζί μας. Παρακαλούμε, φέρτε τα παιδιά σας. Θα περάσουν υπέροχα. Τέλος, στις 29 Ιουνίου, θα γίνει μία επιτροπή με σκοπό τις ερχόμενες εκλογές. Ελπίζουμε πολλοί γονείς να λάβουν ενεργό μέρος. Υπάρχουν θέσεις για όλους. 32 ÏÀ EÐtA ÖPAÓÅÉÓ ÔïÕ ÑÀΣÔÏÕ ΣÔÏ ΣÔaÕrï Του Αγίου Νικολάου Βελιμίροβιτς (Ἐπίσκοπου Ἀχρίδος) Θέλετε νὰ µάθετε τὴ σηµασία ἐκείνων τῶν ἑπτὰ φράσεων τὶς ὁποῖες εἶπε ὁ Κύριος πάνω στὸν σταυρό. Δὲν εἶναι σαφεῖς; Πρώτη φράση: «Πάτερ, ἄφες αὐτοῖς οὐ γὰρ οἴδασι τί ποιοῦσι»(λούκ. 23,34). Μὲ αὐτὰ τὰ λόγια ὁ Χριστὸς ἔδειξε τὸ ἔλεός του ἀπέναντι στοὺς ἐκτελεστές Του, τῶν ὁποίων ἡ µοχθηρία δὲν ὑποχώρησε οὔτε ὅταν ὑπέφερε στὸν σταυρό. Τὸ δεύτερο εἶναι ὅτι βροντοφώναξε ἀπὸ τὴν κορυφὴ τοῦ βράχου τοῦ Γολγοθᾶ µία ἀποδεδειγµένη ἀλλά ποτὲ καλὰ συνειδητοποιηµένη ἀλήθεια, δηλαδὴ ὅτι αὐτοὶ ποὺ πράττουν τὸ κακὸ ποτὲ δὲν ξέρουν τί κάνουν. Σκοτώνοντας τὸν Δίκαιο στὴν πραγµατικότητα σκοτώνουν τὸν ἑαυτό τους καὶ ταυτόχρονα δοξάζουν τὸν Δίκαιο. Καταπατώντας τὸν νόµο τοῦ Θεοῦ δὲν βλέπουν τὴ µυλόπετρα, ἡ ὁποία ἀόρατα κατεβαίνει πρὸς αὐτοὺς γιὰ νὰ τοὺς συνθλίψει. Ἐµπαίζοντας τὸν Θεὸ δὲν βλέπουν τὰ πρόσωπά τους νὰ µεταµορφώνονται σὲ θηριώδη ρύγχη. Διαποτισµένοι ἀπὸ τὸ κακὸ ποτὲ δὲν ξέρουν τί κάνουν. Δεύτερη φράση: «Ἀµὴν λέγω σοι, σήµερον µετ ἐµοῦ ἔση ἐν τῷ παραδείσῳ» (Λουκ. 23,43). Αὐτὸς ὁ λόγος ἀπευθύνεται στὸν µετανιωµένο ληστὴ στὸν σταυρό. Πολὺ παρήγορος λόγος γιὰ τοὺς ἁµαρτωλούς, οἱ ὁποῖοι τουλάχιστον τὴν τελευταία στιγµὴ µετανοοῦν. Τὸ ἔλεος τοῦ Θεοῦ εἶναι ἀπερίγραπτα µεγάλο. Ὁ Κύριος ἐκπληρώνει τὴν ἀποστολὴ Του ἀκόµα καὶ στὸν σταυρό. Ἕως τὴν τελευταία του πνοὴ ὁ Κύριος σώζει ἐκείνους ποὺ δείχνουν καὶ τὴν παραµικρὴ ἐπιθυµία νὰ σωθοῦν. Τρίτη φράση: «Γύναι, ἴδε ὁ υἱός σου» (Ἰωαν. 19,26). Ἔτσι εἶπε ὁ Κύριος στὴν Ἁγία Μητέρα Του ποὺ στεκόταν κάτω ἀπὸ τὸν σταυρὸ µὲ τὴν ψυχὴ σταυρωµένη. Καὶ στὸν ἀπόστολο Ἰωάννη λέγει: «Ἰδοὺ ἡ µήτηρ σου» (Ἰωαν. 19,27). Αὐτὸς ὁ λόγος δείχνει τὴ φροντίδα, ποὺ ὁ καθένας χρωστᾶ στοὺς γονεῖς του. Γιὰ δές, Ἐκεῖνος ποὺ ἔδωσε ἐντολὴ στοὺς ἀνθρώπους: «Τίµα τὸν πατέρα σου καὶ τὴν µητέρα σου» (Ἐξ. 20,12) ἐκπληρώνει τὴν ἐντολὴ Του τὴν ὕστατη στιγµή. Τέταρτη φράση: «Θεέ µου, Θεέ µου, ἱνατί µὲ ἐγκατέλιπες;» (Ματθ. 27,46). Αὐτὲς οἱ λέξεις δείχνουν, τόσο τὴν ἀδύναµη ἀνθρώπινη φύση, ὅσο καὶ τὴν προορατικότητα τοῦ Κυρίου. Ὁ ἄνθρωπος πάσχει, ἀλλά κάτω ἀπὸ τὸν ἀνθρώπινο πόνο ὑπάρχει ἕνα µυστήριο. Δές, µόνον αὐτὲς οἱ λέξεις µποροῦσαν νὰ διαλύσουν τὴν αἵρεση, ἡ ὁποία ἀργότερα τράνταζε τὴν ἐκκλησία καὶ ἡ ὁποία λανθασµένα κήρυττε ὅτι ἡ Θεία φύση ὑπέφερε στὸν σταυρό. Ὅµως, ἐν τῷ µεταξύ, ὁ αἰώνιος Υἱος τοῦ Θεοῦ γι αὐτὸ καὶ ἐνσαρκώθηκε ὡς ἄνθρωπος, γιὰ νὰ εἶναι ὡς ἄνθρωπος στὸ σῶµα καὶ τὴν ψυχή, γιὰ νὰ µπορέσει ὅταν ἔλθει ἡ στιγµὴ νὰ πάσχει γιὰ τοὺς ἀνθρώπους καὶ νὰ πεθάνει γιὰ τοὺς ἀνθρώπους. Γιατί ἂν ἡ Θεία φύση τοῦ Χριστοῦ ἔπασχε στὸν σταυρό, θὰ σήµαινε ὅτι ἡ Θεία φύση τοῦ Χριστοῦ θὰ πέθαινε. Καὶ αὐτὸ οὔτε κἄν ἐπιτρέπεται νὰ διανοηθοῦµε. Ἐντρυφῆστε ὅσο πιὸ πολὺ µπορεῖτε σ αὐτὲς τὶς µεγάλες καὶ φοβερὲς λέξεις: «Θεέ µου, Θεέ µου, ἱνατί µὲ ἐγκατέλιπες;». Ἡ πέµπτη φράση: «Διψῶ» (Ἰωαν 19,28). Τὸ αἷµα Του ἔρρεε. Γι αὐτὸ καὶ διψοῦσε. Ὁ ἥλιος ἦταν κατὰ τὴ δύση του, ἤδη Τοῦ χτυποῦσε τὸ πρόσωπο καὶ µαζὶ µὲ τὰ ἄλλα βασανιστήρια καιγόταν πολύ. Φυσικὸ ἦταν νὰ διψᾶ. Ἀλλά, Κύριε, διψοῦσες ὄντως γιὰ νερὸ ἤ γιὰ ἀγάπη; Μήπως διψοῦσες ὡς ἄνθρωπος ἤ ὡς Θεός, ἤ καὶ τὸ ἕνα καὶ τὸ ἄλλο; Ἰδοὺ ὁ Ρωµαῖος λεγεωνάριος Σοῦ πρόσφερε ἕνα σπόγγο βρεγµένο στὸ ξύδι. Μιά σταγόνα ἐλέους, τὴν ὁποία δὲν αἰσθάνθηκες ἀπό τούς ἀνθρώπους γιὰ τρεῖς ὁλόκληρες ὧρες κρεµασµένος στὸν σταυρό! Αὐτὸς ὁ Ρωµαῖος στρατιώτης ἁπαλύνει κάπως τὴν ἁµαρτία τοῦ Πιλάτου -τὴν ἁµαρτία τῆς Ρωµαϊκῆς αὐτοκρατορίας- ἀπέναντί Σου, ἔστω καὶ µὲ ξύδι. Γι αὐτὸ θὰ ἀφανίσεις τὴ Ρωµαϊκὴ αὐτοκρατορία, ἀλλά στὴ θέση της θὰ οἰκοδοµήσεις νέα. Ἡ ἕκτη φράση: «Πάτερ, εἰς χεῖρας σου παρατίθεµαι τὸ πνεῦµά µου» (Λουκ. 23,46). Πού σηµαίνει ὅτι ὁ Υἱός παραδίδει τὸ πνεῦµα Του στὰ χέρια τοῦ Πατρός Του. Γιὰ νὰ γίνει γνωστό, ὅτι ἀπὸ τὸν Πατέρα ἦρθε καὶ ὄχι αὐτεξουσίως, ὅπως Τὸν κατηγοροῦσαν οἱ Φαρισαίοι. Ἀλλά ἀκόµα οἱ λέξεις αὐτὲς ἐλέχθησαν γιὰ νὰ τὶς ἀκούσουν οἱ βουδιστές, οἱ πυθαγόρειοι, οἱ ἀποκρυφιστές, καὶ ὅλοι ἐκεῖνοι οἱ φιλόσοφοι, οἱ ὁποῖοι φλυαροῦσαν περὶ µετοίκισης τῆς ψυχῆς τῶν νεκρῶν ἀνθρώπων σὲ ἄλλους ἀνθρώπους, ἤ ζῶα, ἤ φυτά, ἤ ἀστέρια, ἤ µεταλλικὰ στοιχεῖα. Πετάξετε ὅλες αὐτὲς τὶς φαντασίες καὶ δεῖτε ποῦ κατευθύνεται τὸ πνεῦµα τοῦ νεκροῦ Δικαίου: «Πάτερ, εἰς χεῖράς σου παρατίθεµαι τὸ πνεῦµά µου»! Ἡ ἕβδοµη φράση: «Τετέλεσται» (Ἰωαν.19,30). Αὐτὸ δὲν σηµαίνει ὅτι τελειώνει ἡ ζωή. Ὄχι! Ἀλλά ὅτι τελειώνει ἡ ἀποστολὴ ἡ ἐπικεντρωµένη στὴ σωτηρία τοῦ ἀνθρωπίνου γένους. Τελείωσε, καὶ ἐπισφραγίσθηκε µὲ τὸ αἷµα καὶ τὸν ἐπίγειο θάνατο, τὸ θεῖο ἔργο τοῦ µοναδικοῦ ἀληθινοῦ Μεσσία τῶν ἀνθρώπων. Τελείωσαν τὰ βασανιστήρια, ἀλλά ἡ ζωὴ µόλις ἀρχίζει. Τελείωσε ἡ τραγωδία ἀλλά ὄχι καὶ τὸ δράµα. Στὴ σειρὰ ἕπεται, τὸ µεγαλειῶδες ἀξίωµα: νίκη πάνω στὸν θάνατο, ἀνάσταση, δόξα. Μνησθητι ημων κυριε εν τη βασιλεια σου...

33 HOLY LIGHT The ceremony, which awes the souls of Christians, takes place in the Church of the Resurrection, in Jerusalem. The date of Pascha is determined anew for every year. It must be a first Sunday after the spring equinox and Jewish Passover. Therefore, most of the time it differs from the date of Catholic and Protestant Easter, which is determined using different criteria. The Holy Fire is the most renowned miracle in the world of Eastern Orthodoxy. It has taken place at the same time, in the same manner, in the same place every single year for centuries. No other miracle is known to occur so regularly and so steadily over time. It happens in the Church of the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem, the holiest place on earth, where Christ was crucified, entombed, and where He finally rose from the dead. The Sepulchre is located in the small chapel called Holy Ciborium, which is inside the Church of the Resurrection. Beginning at around 11:00 in the morning, the Christian Arabs chant traditional hymns in a loud voice. These chants date back to the Turkish occupation of Jerusalem in the 13th century, a period in which the Christians were not allowed to chant anywhere but in the churches. We are the Christians, we have been Christians for centuries, and we shall be forever and ever. Amen! - they chant at the top of their voices accompanied by the sound of drums. But at 1:00 pm the chants fade out, and then there is a silence. A tense silence, charged from the anticipation of the great demonstration of God's power for all to witness. Shortly thereafter, a delegation from the local authorities elbows its way through the crowd. At the time of the Turkish occupation of Palestine they were Muslim Turks; today they are Israelis. The Israeli authorities on this Holy Saturday come and seal the tomb with wax. Before they seal the door, they follow a custom to enter the tomb, and to check for any hidden source of fire, which would make a fraud of a miracle. I enter the tomb and kneel in holy fear in front of the place where Christ lay after His death and where He rose again from the dead... (narrates Orthodox Patriarch Diodor - ed.). I find my way through the darkness towards the inner chamber in which I fall on my knees. Here I say certain prayers that have been handed down to us through the centuries and, having said them, I wait. Sometimes I may wait a few minutes, but normally the miracle happens immediately after I have said the prayers. From the core of the very stone on which Jesus lay an indefinable light pours forth. It usually has a blue tint, but the color may change and take many different hues. It cannot be described in human terms. The light rises out of the stone as mist may rise out of a lake it almost looks as if the stone is covered by a moist cloud, but it is light. This light each year behaves differently. Sometimes it covers just the stone, while other times it gives light to the whole sepulchre, so that people who stand outside the tomb and look into it will see it filled with light. The light does not burn I have never had my beard burnt in all the sixteen years I have been Patriarch in Jerusalem and have received the Holy Fire. The light is of a different consistency than normal fire that burns in an oil lamp.... While the Patriarch is inside the chapel kneeling in front of the stone, there is darkness but far from silence outside. One hears a rather loud mumbling, and the atmosphere is very tense. When the Patriarch comes out with the two candles lit and shining brightly in the darkness, a roar of jubilee resounds in the Church. The Holy Light is not only distributed by the Archbishop, but operates also by itself. It is emitted from the Holy Sepulchre with a hue completely different from that of natural light. It sparkles, it flashes like lightning, it flies like a dove around the tabernacle of the Holy Sepulchre, and lights up the unlit lamps of olive oil hanging in front of it. It whirls from one side of the church to the other. It lights up also the candles of certain pilgrims. In fact there are some very pious pilgrims who, every time they attended this ceremony, noticed that their candles lit up on their own accord! Marvel picture. For a few minutes after Holy Fire appearance, if it touches the face, or the mouth, or the hands, it does not burn. This divine light also presents some peculiarities: As soon as it appears it has a bluish hue and does not burn. At the first moments of its appearance, if it touches the face, or the mouth, or the hands, it does not burn. This is proof of its divine and supernatural origin.
