Kosta Petrogeorge The ecclesiastical (Church) new years, according to Byzantine practice, begins on September 1 st. The calendar consists of many and diverse feasts and fasts. By participating in this rhythm of the Church, we become heightened to the truth that God s glory and goodness exists in every day and moment! A group of nuns living in China at the time of the Communist revolution faced many hardships and unusual suffering. One day the nuns were ordered by the authorities to sweep the streets. In a panic, the abbess went to her bishop and complained about being forced to leave the monastery to sweep the streets. The bishop listened sympathetically and calmly said, "Well, then, blessed Mother, I guess you'll just have to sweep the streets." Faced with an additional activity, the nuns in China had to adjust to their new situation that threatened to take them away from their customary routine and spiritual practices. Living in the world creates similar situations. Concerns about finances, the work place, raising children and taking personal time often overwhelm our thoughts and result in the neglect of one's spiritual life. Having Christ at the center of one's life changes the perception of the many day-to-day routines. In the lovely book, In The Spirit of Happiness (Monks of New Skete) it is noted, it is noted that something as simple as "picking up after ourselves around the house, assuming proper responsibility towards those we love, or listening with complete attention to a person you are having a conversation with", are all ascetic practices that train the soul to respect our environment and The Nuns in China had to leave the peace and quiet of their hermitage in order to sweep the busy, loud, and dirty streets. They discovered how to make that action into an ascetic discipline by not allowing the physical burden to be an empty action. They gave the physical activity of sweeping the street an eternal value by making it a prayer in action. Creation is a gift from God and reflects his beauty. By caring for the streets, they were honoring God and His creation. This made others who walked daily on the streets see their world differently. A clean street gave the message that someone cared how the condition of the city affected the lives of others. In turn, thankfulness was born in the hearts of the people that was not present before. It is in this thankfulness that God is glorified, and the human person is elevated. This perspective of time and activity, is what is celebrated throughout the year. May we be familiar with the calendar of the Church, and find great joy by being near it!

4 THE SOURCE SEPTEMBER 2014 Page 4 Parishioners, PARISH COUNCIL September is going to be a busy and exciting month. September first is the beginning of the New Ecclesiastical Year. All of our organizations will be starting their programs for the coming year. Our parish is fortunate to have parishioners that are willing to run the many programs. Sign your children up for Altar boys, Sunday School, Greek School and Greek dancing. Join the choir. Plan to participate in the GOYA/JOY, Senior citizens, Philoptochos, etc. Help teach your children to participate in the various church programs. It will make a difference in their lives. The parish council is making renovations within the church. The lower level classrooms and the hallways are painted and the woodwork is being sanded and stained. The kitchen has a new non-slippery floor. Our cathedral is one of the largest and best facilities in our metropolis and we are planning to make improvements and renovations as needed. On behalf of the parish council, I challenge all the parishioners to think about running for the parish council. Everyone that is in good standing as of August 31 is eligible to run. For those that do not wish to run for office there are other opportunities to serve the church. There are various committees that need individuals to participate. Step up and let someone on the parish council know if you want to participate. Parish council meetings are usually held the second Tuesday of the month. Anyone wishing to attend and contribute their thoughts is welcomed to come. The Metropolis Clergy-Laity Assembly will take place at our church from Thursday, September 25 to Saturday, September 27. We are honored to be chosen to host this event and it is a great opportunity for all of us to see our church at work. Please plan to volunteer and attend. There will be excellent speakers, discussion groups and opportunities to meet clergy and laity from across our Metropolis. We will providing the meals and the use of our facilities. Please check the Sunday bulletins for instructions if you want to participate in events. We need volunteers as greeters and to help with serving food. 6 THE SOURCE SEPTEMBER 2014 Page 6 VOTER ELIGIBILITY FOR PARISH COUNCIL ELECTIONS In order to be eligible to vote in the Parish Council Elections, an individual must be a member in good standing of the Parish, as defined in the Uniform Parish Regulations of the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America. In Chapter One, Article 18, Section 1, of these regulations, a parishioner in good standing is defined as: "Any person, eighteen years of age or over, who was baptized and chrismated according to the rites of the Orthodox Church and lives according to the tenets of the Orthodox faith." The Uniform Parish Regulations also provide that a member in good standing is one who has met his or her stewardship obligation to the Parish. Under Article VI, Section 1, of our Parish Bylaws, this stewardship obligation is defined as follows: "For purposes of voting in the annual election of Parish Council members, a parishioner in good standing is defined as any member of the Parish who submits a completed stewardship pledge card on or before the end of the Ecclesiastical Year, August 31, prior to the elections on the third Sunday in November of each calendar year." In addition, Article VI, Section 6, of the Parish Bylaws provides that "Absentee ballots shall be made available to parishioners who for physical or health reasons are unable to personally cast a ballot on the day of elections and who are otherwise able, competent, and eligible to vote." Requests for absentee ballots will be available in the church office. Please remember that if you do not turn in a pledge card, you are NOT eligible to vote in the Fall elections for Parish Council, NOR are you able to run as a candidate. August 31, 2014 is the deadline to submit your stewardship pledge card. 12 THE SOURCE SEPTEMBER 2014 Page 12 BYLAWS OF OLYMPIC FLAME DANCERS Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Cathedral 1000 Yverdon Drive Camp Hill, PA (Revised November ) 1. The Board of the Olympic Flames: The Board of the Olympic Flames will consist of 2 Directors, Treasurer, Recording Secretary, Corresponding Secretary and Costume Coordinators. 2. Roles of the The Board: a. Directors: Responsible for the day to day running of the Olympic Flame Dance Group. Duties include scheduling and presiding over meetings, collecting registration monies from dancers, scheduling practice times, hiring dance instructors and signing their monthly pay records. b. Treasurer: Responsible for maintaining the Olympic Flame Checking Account and Checkbook, making timely deposits (deposits must be made within one week of receiving checks from the Director), preparing a monthly financial report. c. Recording Secretary: Principal duties include taking minutes at monthly meetings and distributing copies of those minutes to dancers and parents prior to the next monthly meeting. Minutes may be distributed via . d. Corresponding Secretary: Principal duties shall include collecting and responding to correspondence related to the Olympic Flames. Submitting information about Olympic Flame activities to the Holy Trinity Secretary for inclusion in the Monthly Source and weekly bulletins. Preparing a monthly newsletter to be ed to dancers and their parents. e. Costume Coordinators: Responsible for maintaining the costumes owned by the Olympic Flames. Their duties will include distributing costumes to dancers as needed, collecting deposits and ordering new costumes when necessary. 3. Dance Levels: Beginners (Grades 1 st and 2 nd or up to age 8) Intermediate (Grades 3 rd, 4 th and 5 th ) Junior (Grades 6 th, 7 th and 8 th ) Senior (Grades 9, 10 th, 11 th and 12 th ) Dancers (who are older than Beginner age) but have no prior Greek Folk dance experience will be observed by instructors and the Board and will be placed accordingly. 3. Dancers are expected to attend practice on a regular basis. This is very important because some dances involve partners and if one partner is absent, it hinders the progress of the other individual. The instructors will take attendance at every class.

13 THE SOURCE SEPTEMBER 2014 Page Practices will be held once a week for all dance groups. Practice time(s) and day(s) will be determined at the beginning of each ecclesiastical year. If a performance is coming up, then practice will be held more often to prepare for the performance. Everyone must respect the instructors and each other. The teachers have only one hour per week with your children and they have much to teach them. It is important for the children to stay focused and for this reason parents will not be allowed in the rehearsal rooms during practice. 5. Each year, registration will commence in September and will be announced in the Cathedral s publications. All new and on-going members will have to complete and submit a registration form. Once practices begin it is very hard to accept new dancers. Please register early. 6. The annual fee of $ per dancer. This fee will be used exclusively to pay the instructors for their time. Families will be charged full price for the first two children in their family. If a family has more than two children participating in the dance group at the same time the third child will be charged half price and any after will be free. The $ fee will be collected at registration. Parents have the option of paying this fee in full at registration time, or in two increments of $ at registration and the balance of $75.00 by the end of November. This is for a FULL year commitment. The full year begins in September through Mid-December resuming in Mid-January through May. (Total of approx. 8 months).we are not able to prorate the registration fee. 7. Rehearsal Changes/Inclement Weather Policy: All communications with parents with respect to Olympic Flame Dance News will be communicated via unless a parent indicates on the registration form that they wish to receive a phone call. Cancellations or changes in schedule due to weather etc. will be sent via by 4:00pm on the day of rehearsal. Please check your s every Wed. before rehearsal. If Greek School is cancelled due to inclement weather then Dance will also be cancelled. COSTUMES 8. The Olympic Flame Dance Group Costume Managers will distribute costumes to each dancer as needed for performances. Cleaned costumes must be returned no more than one week following the performance. At the time the costumes are handed out a refundable deposit check in the amount of $150 (beginner, intermediate and junior) and $200 (senior) will be collected. Once a costume is returned with all pieces intact within 30 days the check will be returned. In the event that any pieces are missing, your check will be cashed and used to pay for a new costume. This is due to the fact that an entire costume must be ordered to replace even one missing piece. Dancers will not be given a costume until the deposit is paid.. The policy is necessary due to the fact that many costumes are not returned, are returned dirty or with missing pieces. 9. These by-laws will be reviewed and voted upon at the end of each year for the following ecclesiastical year.

14 THE SOURCE SEPTEMBER 2014 Page 14 SEPTEMBER CLERGY-LAITY ASSEMBLY The 2014 Metropolis of Pittsburgh Clergy-Laity Assembly will be held in our Cathedral between Thursday, September 25 Saturday, September 27, According to the Regulations, Article 11, Section 5. Each Parish shall be represented by four (4) representatives, each having one vote and shall include: A. The Parish Priest; B. The President of the Parish Council, and in his or her absence the Vice President, or in his or her absence any member of the Parish Council designated by it; and C. Two members (in good standing) of the Parish elected by the Parish Assembly. This year the cost for each Clergy-Laity Assembly representative is $225 and the two (2) representatives from our community are Chris Petsinis and Peter Pavlis. U.S. POSTAGE PAID Harrisburg, PA Permit No ADVERTISING IN THE SOURCE In an effort to contain printing costs for monthly newsletters, many churches have turned to paid advertisements in their publications. Parish Council has agreed to adopt this funding source for our monthly publication. Doing this would help lessen and possibly erase the expense of publishing the Source. We now have availability for two pages of paid ads in our monthly Source. The ad price will represent a year of advertising or 11 issues as we combine the June and July Source into one issue. Ads are sold by the block. There will be room for 24 ads or blocks per page. You may purchase more than one block for increased space and presentation. The cost of one ad block is $125 per year, and subsequent blocks would be an additional $100 per block. For example, a business card ad would equal two blocks and would cost $225. Camera ready ads are appreciated but not required. Please help us promote this program. If you own or work for a business that may be interested in advertising in our Source which is sent out to over 600 families, please contact Mary in the church office. If you know of a business that may be a potential advertiser, please pass on a contact and phone number. Examples of businesses that may be interested in advertising could be Greek bands, importers, baptismal supplies/clothing stores, and jewelers specializing in crosses. Other possibilities could be lawyers, accountants, real estate agents, etc. The only ads we cannot accept are ones pertaining to credit cards, travel, or insurance. Please contact the church office as soon as possible if interested in this program.
