'God is love', writes St John the Theologian and, adds St Gregory the Theologian, 'when I say God, I mean Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.' For the Eastern Fathers God is a social being - communion of love between three persons: 'In the life-creating nature of Father, Son and Holy Spirit there is no division, but only a continuous and inseparable communion [koinonia ] between them... It is not possible to envisage any severance or division, such that one might think of the Son without the Father, or separate the Spirit from the Son; but there is between them and ineffable and inconceivable communion [koinonia ] and distinction. They found it impossible to conceive of a lonely God. If love is the very being of God then He cannot be alone. Love is not possible in isolation. When people follow God in faith, according to the Fathers, they come to see that God is not alone in His divinity. This is the mystery of all mysteries, the truth of all truths. Nor would it have been an adequate solution to claim that God fulfilled His essential need to love by creating of the world. This would deny God's absolute freedom to act beyond any external or internal necessity and love cannot exist in the absence of freedom. While the Trinity is a mystery it is possible to attain to the meaning of God's triunity as long as we do not rely only on human powers of critical analysis. St Gregory the Theologian points out that it is known solely by those to whom the triune God chooses to reveal Himself and the divine and eternal Trinity is accessible only to those who theologise 'not in the manner of Aristotle but of the fishermen.' Of course all forms of language and every image drawn from human experience is necessarily limited in expressing God. Nevertheless doctrinal statements, whether biblical or conciliar, are useful as signposts pointing to the transcendent truth. In a way they serve as a fence around the mystery of the Trinity while never being quite able to delineate its content. It does matter then how we speak of God. Our words can point in the right or wrong direction. (page continued..)

2 And so the Fathers proclaim, following the Biblical witness, that God has a Son. God is Father by nature not because human beings have projected this title onto Him from their human experiences. God is Father because He has a Son as a necessary element of His divine being and life. And while Orthodox theology maintains that it would be misleading to speak of God as Mother and Daughter any notions of divine paternity and filiation cannot be interpreted literally and infinitely surpass any human experiences for He transcends all gender and sexuality just as He transcends everything else. If God is then a social being, humans are also social beings. If God is personal then humans are also persons. If God is communion then humans are also meant to be in communion. The Greek word for person is prosopon which means 'to face towards'. To see or to hear another (per sonare - person [Latin equivalent]) is to establish contact and to enter into communion. This is a far cry from being an individual - autonomous, separate, self-centred, in isolation. It is only in relationships that we become true persons and reflections of the communion that exists within the Holy Trinity. The Fathers in seeking to describe hell tended to give, not so much images of fire and brimstone, as images of a break in communion or relationships. Being tied to another person back to back, never being to behold their face, or total isolation from God and all others - the ultimate individualism - was hell. There is in Dostoevsky the story of an old woman whose selfish life had finally condemned her to hell. The only kind act she had ever done was to offer an onion to someone in their hunger. This same onion is now offered to her as a means of escaping from the lake of fire. She reaches out and grabs it. Others around her also try to take hold of it. No sooner does the call out, 'Its my onion, not yours', than the onion breaks in two and she falls back into the fiery lake. She had refused to share. She had refused to say 'our onion' and so had denied herself participation in the life of the Trinity. She had denied her own personhood. The words of the late Vladimir Lossky ring very true - 'Between the Trinity and hell there lies no other choice.' The doctrine of the Trinity, then, cannot be dismissed as some philosophical abstraction or an optional extra for monotheists. It holds within it the very essence of what it means to be divine and human. The way of communion, of personal diversity and solidarity with all others provides the only way for true life. True faith in the Triune God is a radical step. It obliges us to seek to conform all our relationships to the divine model of love - whether family, church, economics, society, politics etc. 'Our social program is the doctrine of the Trinity,' said Nicolas Fyodorov ( ).

3 Μήνυμα Ιερέως Δεν είναι καλό για τον Θεό να είναι μόνος «Ο Θεός είναι αγάπη», γράφει ο Άγιος Ιωάννης ο Θεολόγος και, προσθέτει ο Άγιος Γρηγόριος ο Θεολόγος,«όταν λέω Θεός, εννοώ, τον Πατέρα, τον Υιό και το Άγιο Πνεύμα». Για τους Ανατολικούς Πατέρες ο Θεός είναι μία κοινωνική ύπαρξη - κοινωνία αγάπης μεταξύ τριών προσώπων: «Στη δημιουργία της φύσης του Πατρός, του Υιού και του Αγίου Πνεύματος δεν υπάρχει διαίρεση, αλλά μόνο μια συνεχής και αδιαίρετη κοινωνία μεταξύ τους... Δεν είναι δυνατόν να προβλέψουμε το ενδεχόμενο ρήξης ή διάσπασης, τέτοιας που κάποιος θα μπορούσε να σκεφτεί τον Υιό χωρίς τον Πατέρα, ή τον διαχωρισμό του Πνεύματος από τον Υιό. Υπάρχει όμως μεταξύ τους και ανέκφραστη και αδιανόητη κοινωνία και διάκριση. Θα ήταν αδύνατο να φανταστούμε ένα μοναχικό Θεό. Αν η αγάπη είναι η ίδια η ύπαρξη του Θεού, τότε Εκείνος δεν μπορεί να είναι μόνος. Η αγάπη δεν είναι δυνατή σε απομόνωση. Όταν οι άνθρωποι ακολουθούν τον Θεό με πίστη, σύμφωνα με τους Πατέρες, βλέπουν πως ο Θεός δεν είναι μόνος στην θεότητά Του. Αυτό είναι το μυστήριο όλων των μυστηρίων, η αλήθεια όλων των αληθειών. Ούτε θα ήταν μια κατάλληλη λύση να ισχυριστεί ένας ότι ο Θεός έχει εκπληρώσει την ουσιαστική Του ανάγκη για την αγάπη, δημιουργώντας τον κόσμο. Αυτό θα μπορούσε να διαψεύσει την απόλυτη ελευθερία του Θεού να ενεργεί πέραν από οποιαδήποτε εξωτερική ή εσωτερική ανάγκη και η αγάπη δεν μπορεί να υπάρξει, όταν απουσιάζει η ελευθερία. Ενώ η Αγία Τριάδα είναι ένα μυστήριο, είναι δυνατόν να καταλάβουμε την έννοια της τριαδικότητας του Θεού, εφ 'όσον δεν βασιζόμαστε μόνο στις ανθρώπινες δυνάμεις κριτικής ανάλυσης. Ο Άγιος Γρηγόριος ο Θεολόγος επισημαίνει ότι είναι γνωστό μόνο από εκείνους στους οποίους ο τρισυπόστατος Θεός επιλέγει να αποκαλύψει τον εαυτό Του και η θεία και αιώνια Τριάδα είναι προσβάσιμη μόνο σε όσους ασχολούνται με τη θεολογία, «όχι με τον τρόπο του Αριστοτέλη, αλλά των ψαράδων. Φυσικά, όλες οι μορφές της γλώσσας και κάθε εικόνα που προέρχεται από την ανθρώπινη εμπειρία είναι κατ 'ανάγκην περιορισμένη για να μπορέσει να εκφράσει τον Θεό. Παρ 'όλα αυτά δογματικές δηλώσεις, είτε βιβλικές, είτε συνοδικές είναι χρήσιμες σαν πινακίδες που δείχνουν προς την υπερβατική αλήθεια. Κατά κάποιον τρόπο χρησιμεύουν σαν ένας φράχτης γύρω από το μυστήριο της Αγίας Τριάδος, ενώ ποτέ δεν είναι σε θέση να προσδιορίσουν το περιεχόμενό της. Έχει τότε σημασία πως μιλάμε για το Θεό. Τα λόγια μας μπορούν να δείξουν τη σωστή ή την λανθασμένη κατεύθυνση. Κι έτσι οι Πατέρες διακηρύττουν, ακολουθώντας την βιβλική μαρτυρία, ότι ο Θεός έχει ένα Γιο. Ο Θεός είναι Πατέρας από τη φύση του, δεν είναι επειδή τα ανθρώπινα όντα έχουν προβάλει αυτόν τον τίτλο σ 'Αυτόν από τις ανθρώπινες εμπειρίες τους. Ο Θεός είναι Πατέρας, γιατί έχει ένα Υιό, σαν απαραίτητο στοιχείο της θείας ύπαρξης και της ζωής Του. Και ενώ η Ορθόδοξη θεολογία υποστηρίζει ότι θα ήταν παραπλανητικό να μιλάμε για το Θεό σαν Μητέρα και Κόρη, οποιεσδήποτε έννοιες της θείας πατρότητας και γονικής δεν μπορεί να ερμηνευθεί κυριολεκτικά και ξεπερνούν απείρως κάθε ανθρώπινη εμπειρία διότι Εκείνος ξεπερνά κάθε φύλο και σεξουαλικότητα, ακριβώς όπως ξεπερνά ο,τιδήποτε άλλο.

4 Αν ο Θεός είναι τότε ένα κοινωνικό ον, οι άνθρωποι είναι, επίσης, κοινωνικά όντα. Αν ο Θεός είναι προσωπικός τότε οι άνθρωποι είναι, επίσης, πρόσωπα. Αν ο Θεός είναι κοινωνία τότε οι άνθρωποι έχουν επίσης ως στόχο να είναι στην κοινωνία. Η ελληνική λέξη πρόσωπο σημαίνει «να βλέπεις προς». Για να δείτε ή να ακούσετε ένα άλλο πρόσωπο (per sonare - [Λατινικό ισοδύναμο]) σημαίνει να έρθεις σε επαφή και να εισέλθεις στην κοινωνία. Αυτό απέχει πολύ από το να είσαι ένα άτομο - αυτόνομο, ξεχωριστό, εγωκεντρικός, σε απομόνωση. Μόνο με σχέσεις μπορούμε να γίνουμε πραγματικά πρόσωπα και αντανακλάσεις της κοινωνίας που υπάρχει μέσα στην Αγία Τριάδα. Οι Πατέρες στην προσπάθειά τους να περιγράψουν την κόλαση έτειναν να δώσουν, όχι τόσο εικόνες από φωτιά και θειάφι, όσο εικόνες από μία διακοπή στην κοινωνία ή στις σχέσεις. Να είσαι δεμένος με ένα άλλο πρόσωπο, πλάτη με πλάτη και να μη βλέπεις ποτέ το πρόσωπό του, ή να βρίσκεσαι σε πλήρη απομόνωση από το Θεό και απ όλους τους άλλους με απόλυτο ατομικισμό αυτή ήταν η κόλαση. Υπάρχει στον Ντοστογιέφσκι η ιστορία της μια ηλικιωμένης γυναίκας της οποίας η εγωιστική ζωή της, την είχε τελικά καταδικάσει να πάει στην κόλαση. Η μόνη καλή πράξη που είχε κάνει ποτέ ήταν να προσφέρει ένα κρεμμύδι σε κάποιον πεινασμένο. Το ίδιο κρεμμύδι προσφέρεται τώρα σ αυτήν σαν μέσο διαφυγής από τη λίμνη της φωτιάς. Τεντώνει το χέρι της και το αρπάζει. Άλλοι γύρω της προσπαθούν να το πάρουν. Αυτή φωνάζει «είναι δικό μου το κρεμμύδι δεν είναι δικό σας», το κρεμμύδι τότε σπάει στα δύο κι αυτή πέφτει πίσω στην πύρινη λίμνη. Είχε αρνηθεί να μοιραστεί. Είχε αρνηθεί να πει «το κρεμμύδι μας και έτσι είχε αρνηθεί στον εαυτό συμμετοχής στη ζωή της Αγίας Τριάδος. Είχε αρνηθεί τη δική της προσωπικότητα. Τα λόγια του αείμνηστου Βλαντιμίρ Lossky είναι πολύ αληθινά - «Μεταξύ της Αγίας Τριάδας και της κόλασης δεν υ- πάρχει άλλη επιλογή. Το δόγμα της Αγίας Τριάδας, στη συνέχεια, δεν μπορεί να απορριφθεί σαν κάποια φιλοσοφική α- φηρημένη έννοια ή κάτι επιπλέον προαιρετικό για μονοθεϊστές. Κατέχει μέσα του την ίδια την ουσία του τι σημαίνει να είναι θείο και ανθρώπινο. Ο τρόπος της κοινωνίας, της προσωπικής διαφορετικότητας και της αλληλεγγύης με όλους τους άλλους, παρέχει τον τον μόνο τρόπο για την αληθινή ζωή. Η αληθινή πίστη στον Τριαδικό Θεό είναι ένα ριζοσπαστικό βήμα. Μας υποχρεώνει να επιδιώκουμε να συμμορφώνουμε όλες τις σχέσεις μας με το θείο πρότυπο της αγάπης - είτε είναι οικογένεια, εκκλησία, οικονομικά, κοινωνία, πολιτική, κλπ. «Το κοινωνικό μας πρόγραμμα είναι το δόγμα της Αγίας Τριάδας», είπε ο Νίικολας Fyodorov ( ).

5 Feast of the Holy and Glorious Great Martyr Saint Demetrios, The Myrrh-Streamer Saint Demetrios suffered in Thessalonica during the reign of Galerius Maximian (c. 306). He belonged to one of the most distinguished families of the province of Macedonia and was widely admired not only because of his noble ancestry and grace of bearing, but also for virtue, wisdom and goodness of heart surpassing that of his elders. The military expertise of Saint Demetrios led Galerius, as Caesar of the Eastern Empire, to appoint him commander of the Roman forces in Thessaly and Proconsul for Hellas. But for all this, Demetrios remained ever aware of the underlying realities of life. Since faith in Christ had touched his heart, all the glory of this world meant nothing to him, and there was nothing he preferred to teaching and preaching the word of God. Despite the persecution directed against Christians by the Emperor, Saint Demetrios brought a large number of pagans to the faith. His words convinced them because they saw in the righteousness, peace and brotherly love that marked his life an illustration of the truth of which he spoke. The Emperor Maximian had just won a series of brilliant victories over the Scythians and was on his way back to Rome when he halted at Thessalonica to receive the acclamations of the populace and to offer sacrifices in thanksgiving to the idols. A number of pagans, envious of the success of the Saint, took advantage of the Emperor's presence in the city to denounce Demetrios as a Christian. Maximian's astonishment gave way to violent indignation when he was told that Demetrios' was making use of his official position to spread the faith. Demetrios was summoned and confined in a cell, located in the basement of nearby baths. Maximian arranged for games and gladiatorial combats to take place in the amphitheater of the city. He had brought with him a man of gigantic stature and Herculean strength called Lyaios, a Vandal by origin. Such was this man's strength and skill in single combat that no one could withstand him. There was in the city a young Christian called Nestor, who observing the empty pride of the Emperor in the victories of his champion, made up his mind to show him that real power belongs to Christ alone. He ran to the baths where Demetrios was imprisoned and asked for the protection of his prayer in going to confront the giant. The Martyr made the sign of the Cross on the brow and the heart of the boy, and sent him like David before Goliath. He reached the amphitheater just as the heralds were crying out on all sides for any who would stand against Lyaios. Advancing towards the Emperor, Nestor threw his tunic to the ground and shouted, "God of Demetrios, help me!" In the first encounter, at the very moment the giant rushed upon him, Nestor slipped aside and stabbed him to the heart with his dagger. There was uproar and amazement at the marvel, and people asked themselves how a mere child, relying neither on strength nor weapons, could so suddenly have brought down the barbarian.

6 Rather than yield to the sign of the sovereign power of God, the Emperor flew into a rage and ordered the immediate arrest of Nestor and his beheading outside the city. He had heard Nestor calling upon the God of Demetrios and, supposing the Saint had used some kind of witchcraft, Maximian ordered his soldiers to go and thrust Demetrios through with their lances, without trial, in the depths of his prison cell. There were some Christians, including Demetrios' servant Lupus, present at his martyrdom, and when the soldiers had gone, they reverently buried the Saint's body. It was God's will that the grace with which He filled Saint Demetrios should remain active even after his death. This is why He caused to flow from his body a myron with a delightful scent, which had the property of healing all who took it as an unction, with faith in the intercession of the Saint. Time and again, during sixteen hundred years, Saint Demetrios has given proof of his benevolent care for the city of Thessalonica and its inhabitants. He has defended them from the attacks of barbarians, he has preserved them from plague and famine, healed the sick and comforted the afflicted. HYMNS OF THE FEAST Apolytikion (Third Tone) The world has found in you a great champion in time of peril, as you emerged the victor in routing the barbarians. For as you brought to naught the boasts of Lyaios, imparting courage to Nestor in the stadium, in like manner, holy one, great Martyr Demetrios, invoke Christ God for us, that He may grant us His great mercy. Kontakion (Second Tone) God, who gave you invincible power and with care kept your city invulnerable, royally clothed the Church in purple with the streams of your blood, for you are her strength, O Demetrios.

7 Ὁ Ἅγιος Δημήτριος ὁ Μεγαλομάρτυρας ὁ Μυροβλύτης Ο άγιος Δημήτριος γεννήθηκε το δεύτερο μισό του 3ου αιώνα μ.χ. στη Θεσσαλονίκη. Οι γονείς ήταν ευλαβής και ευκατάστατοι. Ο «ευσεβέστατος» Δημήτριος, όπως τον αποκαλεί το Συναξάρι του, ανατράφηκε εν παιδεία και νοθεσία Κυρίου και αναδείχθηκε «διδάσκαλος της πίστεως του Χριστού». Το μαρτύριο του Δημητρίου τελέστηκε όταν ο Μαξιμιανός ε- πισκέφθηκε την Θεσσαλονίκη (296 ή 306), προκειμένου να α- πολαύσει τους αγώνες που διεξάγονταν μέσα στα πλαίσια του εορτασμού της νίκης των Ρωμαίων κατά των Σκυθών. Τότε ο Μαξιμιανός εξέδωσε διάταγμα, όπως φυλακιστεί ο Δημήτριος, με το αιτιολογικό ότι ομολόγησε πίστη προς τον Χριστό. Ο Δημήτριος, λοιπόν, ρίχτηκε σ ένα δημόσιο λουτρό, από όπου κήρυσσε το Ευαγγέλιο. Στους αγώνες λάμβανε μέρος και ένας μεγαλόσωμος αθλητής, ο Λυαίος, ο οποίος είχε μεγάλη φήμη για τις ικανότητές του στο άθλημα της πάλης. Επειδή δε ο Λυαίος προκαλούσε τα πλήθη να παλαίψουν μαζί του, ένας από τους μαθητές του Δημητρίου, ο Νέστορας, ζήτησε την ευλογία του Αγίου, προκειμένουν να αντιμετωπίσει τον Λυαίο. Ο Άγιος Δημήτριος πράγματι ευλόγησε το Νέστορα σφραγίζοντάς τον στο πρόσωπο, με το σημείο του τιμίου σταυρού, και λέγοντάς του: «και τον Λυαίο θα νικήσης και για τον Χριστό θα μαρτυρήσεις». Ο νεαρός Νέστωρας εισήλθε μέσα στο Στάδιο, και λέγοντας «ο Θεός Δημητρίου βοήθει μοι», πάλεψε και νίκησε τον Λυαίο. «Και βαλών αυτώ καιρίαν πληγήν κατά καρδίας αφήκεν άπνουν επί της γης τον πρώην μεγάλαυχον», αναφέρει το Συναξάρι. Ο Μαξιμιανός βλέποντας το γεγονός εξοργίστηκε, γι αυτό και διέταξε να θανατωθεί ο Δημήτριος, θεωρώντας τον υπαίτιο για την ταπεινωτική ήττα του Λυαίου. Έδωσε εντολή, λοιπόν, όπως θανατωθεί πρώτος ο Δημήτριος δια λογχισμού. Ο θάνατος του Δημητρίου ήταν ακαριαίος, αλλά όμως, «πολλών θαυμάτων και ιάσεων παραδόξων μετά την τελευτήν γενόμενος ποιητής», υπογραμμίζει το Συναξάρι. Μετά το Δημήτριο σειρά είχε ο Νέστορας τον οποίο καρατόμησαν με το ίδιό του το ξίφος. Ένας άλλος μαθητής του Αγίου Δημητρίου, ο Λούπος, μάζεψε το τίμιο αίμα του Μεγαλομάρτυρα Δημητρίου με το πανωφόρι και το δακτυλίδι του Αγίου και με αυτό επιτελούσε διάφορα σημεία και ιάσεις ασθενειών. Επειδή όμως πολλοί πίστευαν στον Χριστό υπέστη και ο Λούπος παρόμοιο μαρτύριο με αυτό του Αγίου Δημητρίου και του Νέστορα, όπως εξάλλου και πολλοί άλλοι χριστιανοί της εποχής. Το σκήνωμα του Μεγαλομάρτυρα Δημητρίου οι χριστιανοί το ενταφίασαν σ εκείνο το δημόσιο λουτρό, όπου άρχισε να αναβλύζει μύρο, γι αυτό και ο Δημήτριος έλαβε το προσωνύμιο Μυροβλήτης. Στο τόπο του μαρτυρίου του εκτίσθηκε ένας μικρός ναός το 313 αφιερωμένος στο όνομά του. Το 324 στον ίδιο τόπο ανεγέρθηκε μία τρίκλιτη Βασιλική και το 413 κτίστηκε μία μεγαλύτερη. Η σημερινή μορφή του Ναού ανάγεται στο Σημειωτέον ότι από το 413 μέχρι το 1950 ο Ναός υ- πέστη πολλές καταστροφές και λεηλασίες. Η τελευταία καταστροφή σημειώθηκε το 1917 από μεγάλη πυρκαϊά. Στα υπόγεια του Ναού αυτού σώζεται ο τόπος όπου φυλακίστηκε ο Άγιος Δημήτριος καθώς και το πρώτο του μνήμα. Στο Ναό φυλάσσονται τα τίμια λείψανα του Αγίου. Ο Μεγαλομάρτυρας Δημήτριος είναι ο πολιούχος και προστάτης της Θεσσαλονίκης, και η μνήμη του τελείται στις 26 Οκτωβρίου. Η μνήμη των Αγίων Νέστορος και Λούπου τελείται την επομένη μέρα, 27 Οκτωβρίου.

11 WISDOM FROM THE HOLY FATHERS Elder, Abba Isaac writes, "No kind of repentance that takes place after the removal of our free will will be a well-spring of joy, nor will it be reckoned for the reward of those who possess it." How can anyone repent without exercising his own free will? One may be forced to repent, having fallen in the eyes of others around him, but such repentance has no humility. This is how I understand it. Do you mean that there is repentance that is not voluntary? Yes, it is compulsory repentance. I ask you to forgive me for some harm I have caused to you so that I may be spared the consequences, but I have not changed inside. A fiendish person will pretend to have repented, and will proceed cunningly, offering prostrations with feigned kindness, to deceive others. When someone goes to tell his sins to a Spiritual Father merely because he is afraid of going to hell, even this is not true repentance. He's not repenting for his sins, he's afraid of going to hell! True repentance means that one is first aware of his sins, is pained by them, asks God for forgiveness, and then goes and confesses them. This is why I always recommend Repentance and Confession together. I never recommend Confession alone. Notice, for example, what happens when we have an earthquake. You see those who have a good disposition will be moved deeply, they will repent and change their way of life. But the majority of people keep this fear of God only for a short period of time; and when the danger is past, they resume their former sinful life. This is why, when someone told me that there had recently been a very strong earthquake in his hometown, I told him, "It shook you up, but did it really wake you up?" "It woke us up," he said. Then I said, "Sure, but you'll go back to sleep again". From Elder Paisios of Mount Athos Spiritual Counsels: "Spiritual Struggle" (vol. 3). A saying from the holy fathers. "My bother, the passions are afflictions; and so the Lord does not excommunicate us because of them, but He says: 'Call upon Me in the day of trouble; I will deliver you, and you shall glorify Me' (Ps. 50:15). Therefore, when beset by any kind of passion, there is nothing more useful than to call upon the Name of God. All we can do, weak as we are, is to flee for refuge to the Name of Jesus. There are 4 major periods of fasting during the year and a number of other days in which Orthodox Christians abstain from meat, dairy products, eggs, fish, wine and oil. Every Wednesday and Friday (with some exceptions) is a fasting day. If a feast day falls on a Wednesday or a Friday the fasting is relaxed as indicated. With the exception of Holy Saturday we never fast from wine and oil on Saturday or Sunday because the Resurrection of Christ is celebrated on these days.
