3 LISTENING COMPREHENSION TEST ΓΕΝΙΚΕΣ ΟΔΗΓΙΕΣ ΓΙΑ ΤΟΝ ΚΑΘΗΓΗΤΗ Το NEW Michigan ECCE B2 Listening Practice αποτελεί την εξελιγμένη μορφή του ECCE Listening Practice που οδήγησε στην επιτυχία χιλιάδες υποψήφιους του ECCE. Η κάθε ομιλία περιλαμβάνει μια σύντομη εισαγωγή που εισάγει τον εξεταζόμενο στο πνεύμα και στο θέμα της ομιλίας, όπως: Listen to a teacher in a music class. ή Listen to a radio broadcast from a sporting event. Ακούνε και διαβάζουν για παράδειγμα: Look at questions X-Z. Then, listen to a teacher in a music class.

4 A Guide to Part I of the Michigan Listening Test. In this part of the exam a dialogue will be heard only once. Three options in picture form, which are related to the dialogue, will be presented to the candidate. You will be expected to answer a question at the end of the dialogue. Each picture, A, B or C may be the correct answer depending on the question asked. For this reason you should listen carefully to the whole dialogue before answering the question. The dialogues in the exam cover a wide range of topics and a list of all of them cannot possibly be covered. However, a list of the most commonly examined ones is given below: ANIMALS - pets, farm animals and those encountered in a zoo PRESENTS - buying presents for and receiving them from others BUYING OR DESCRIBING PERSONAL ITEMS - clothing, shoes and accessories SHOPPING - supermarket items, furniture and electrical goods TIME - times of going to work, waking up, flights and meetings ODD JOBS - outdoor (gardening) and indoor (do - it - yourself) SEQUENCE OF DOING THINGS - going first or last to various places (the bank, office, hairdressers, supermarket and other such locations) FILLING IN A VARIETY OF FORMS - applications for jobs and club memberships PERSONAL APPEARANCE - style of hair, height, clothes and general appearance DIRECTIONS - how to get to a cinema, hospital and other locations (often in the form of a brief map) DAYS AND MONTHS - when an appointment is to be kept or a bill paid WEATHER - temperatures and different weather conditions (often in the form of a graph) SPORTS - on TV, at school, scores of games and matches HOBBIES - reading, drawing and other such activities FOOD - ingredients, cooking, restaurants and parties LOCATIONS - where various people, objects, towns, buildings and such like are located FEELINGS AND EXPRESSIONS - recognizing anger, happiness and laughter FREE TIME - going out to cinemas, theaters, exhibitions and such like HOLIDAYS - packing, suitcases, destinations and weather NUMBERS - bills, hotel room prices, prices of items when shopping, borrowing money (often requiring some form of calculation) The above list gives an overall impression of what has frequently been examined. Thus, you are advised to increase your knowledge of vocabulary when dealing with the above topics. The following specimens from the exam have been grouped for easier reading and understanding but should under no circumstances be regarded as a complete picture of the listening test. The groups are merely samples written to serve as a guide. 1. A General example showing multiple questions and answers 2. An Implied Picture 3. Reversion to an Original Answer 4. An Alternative Answer 5. Negative Questions 6. Sequence Dialogues 7. Detailed Pictures 8. Hesitation and Uncertainty 4

5 Exercise 1. A General example showing multiple questions and answers. Topic used: PETS In this example one dialogue will be given with three possible questions and answers. F: Oh, Jim, wouldn t it be wonderful if we had a dog! M: No way, Mary. A dog isn t happy shut up all day in an apartment and cats can damage your furniture when they feel lonely. F: Mmm I suppose you re right. M: Look, we could get a goldfish. That s a nice little pet. F: Okay, I suppose it ll do. Question 1: What will they buy? Answer 1: B a goldfish. Question 2: What did the woman originally want? Answer 2: C a dog. Question 3: Which pet could cause damage to the furniture? Answer 3: A a cat. The above example illustrates the need for you to listen to the whole dialogue before answering. Exercise 2. An Implied Picture Topic used: PRESENTS In a dialogue like this only two of the pictures are definitely stated and the third one is not mentioned (it is implied). Three possible questions and answers will be given. M: I brought you a little something from my visit to one of the Greek islands F: Oh... what is it? One of those illustrated guide books full of pictures? M: No... F: Oh I know! I bet it s some of the local wine. M: No, it isn t. Look. F: Oh what a surprise! I had no idea you knew I collected these things. Question 1: What was the first item mentioned? Answer 1: C an illustrated guide book. Question 2: What did the woman think he had brought for her? Answer 2: B local wine. Question 3: Why was the woman surprised? Answer 3: A shells. The word shells is not given in the dialogue but we are told the woman collects something. This answer is implied. 5

6 Exercise 3. Reversion to the Original Answer Topic used: BUYING CLOTHING In this exercise we will examine the type of dialogue that gives a clear, positive answer then reverses it only to produce the same original answer in the end. Listen carefully. Three different questions and answers will be given. M: Hi, I m looking for a tie... dark with a thin light stripe in it. F: Certainly. What about this one? M: Oh, yes. That s exactly what I want. I ll take it. How much is it? F: $100. M: What! That s too expensive. There s no way I can buy it. Have you anything cheaper? F: Yes, this one but the stripe is much thicker. M: Mmm... I suppose I should buy this cheaper one but... F: We have this one too. A bow tie. M: No, that s not suitable for what I want. Oh... I ll go with the first one! Question 1: Which tie will the man buy? Answer 1: C the original one he wanted but then decided not to buy because of the price. Question 2: Which tie did he think he should buy? Answer 2: B because it was cheaper. Question 3: Which tie was not suitable? Answer 3: A the bow tie. Exercise 4. Alternating Answer Topic used: TIME In this exercise the dialogue jumps back and forth to the answer so pay attention. Three possible questions and answers will be given. M: So what time is your flight? F: Er am. M: Good. You ll be there in time for lunch. F: Well, I m not sure. Maybe I should catch the 1 o clock flight. M: In that case you would have to go straight to the office there. Better catch the 10 o clock flight. F: You know there s another plane at 2 o clock. That d give me plenty of time to get to the airport. I wouldn t have to rush in the morning. M: Mmm... yes, but you d only just be in time for the meeting. Better stick to the original one. F: Mmm... right. Question 1: Which flight will she get? Answer 1: A the 10am one. Question 2: Which flight would allow her not to rush in the morning? Answer 2: C the 2pm one. Question 3: What was the time of the second flight she mentioned? Answer 3: B 1pm. 6

7 Exercise 5. Negative Questions Topic used: OUTDOOR ODD JOBS In this type of dialogue a negative question is asked even though a positive one is expected. As before, three possible questions and answers will be given. F: It would be a good idea if you cut the grass this weekend instead of going to play football. M: Sorry, honey, the lawn mower doesn t work. It s broken. F: Oh then you could water the fruit trees and pick some of the fruit for us! M: Sorry again. The weather forecast calls for rain this weekend. I can t do the gardening in the rain! F: So you won t be able to play football then. M: Er... that s different. Expected Question: What will he do this weekend? Answer: C play football. Negative Question 1: Why won t he pick some fruit? Answer 1: A it will rain. Negative Question 2: Why won t he cut the grass? Answer 2: B the lawn mower is broken. Exercise 6. Sequence Topic used: JOBS TO BE DONE In this type of dialogue you will hear the characters talking about which order (sequence) they should do something. It is a good idea to put numbers 1, 2 and 3 next to the pictures in the order they are mentioned. Then put small a a, b and c when the characters definitely state which place they will go to first or last. Help will be given in the dialogue and four possible questions and answers will be given. F: Let s go to the supermarket and get our shopping done. (Put 1 next to the picture of a supermarket) M: Er... that s not a good idea. The banks will be closing soon. We should go there first. (Put 2 next to the picture of a bank) F: Well we can t go riding around in a dirty car. We ll have to go to the car-wash first. (Put 3 next to the picture of a car-wash) M: I agree. We ll go there first. (Put a next to the car-wash, b next to the bank and c next to the supermarket) Question 1: Which place was mentioned first? Answer 1: B the supermarket. Question 2: Which was the second place mentioned? Answer 2: A the bank. Question 3: Where will they go first? Answer 3: C the car-wash. Question 4: Where will they go last? Answer 4: B the supermarket. 7

8 Exercise 7. Detailed Pictures Topic used: AN APPLICATION FORM In this category the student is usually presented with a confusing amount of information in the three pictures. The first thing to do is to look at the pictures closely and find where their differences are. It is there that the choice will be made. The best way to proceed in such a question is to cross out parts of the pictures not needed as the dialogue unfolds. An example of this is provided in the exercise. One question and answer will be given. M: Er... could you help me with this form, please? I ve already filled in my name, address and home phone number. F: We don t want your home phone number (cross out home tel in picture A ), we prefer your cell phone number. Oh, and don t forget to put your post code with your address. M: Oh, okay, done. Do you need my office number? F: No (cross out office tel in picture C ), but you can add your if you have one. M: Yes... I ll write it now. Question: What should his application form look like? Answer: B Exercise 8. Hesitation and Uncertainty Topic used: PERSONAL APPEARANCE In this kind of dialogue the characters may not explicitly state what they feel or want. Many such dialogues end in a vague phrase or sentence and the student is left with a general idea rather than with a specific statement. F: I was thinking of having my hair dyed two colors. What do you think? M: What?! Er... I mean... er. well, at your age... honey? F: Hm. Well if you don t like the idea I suppose I could have my hair cut and permed... without the rest. M: Ugh, a perm?! I don t mean... Well, it wouldn t suit you. F: Okay, I get it! Just cut? M: Well, if you like... but don t let me stop you... you know. F: Yeah, yeah, I know. So I suppose that d be my best bet, then. Question 1: What will the woman have done at the hairdressers? Answer 1: B a haircut. Question 2: What idea shocked the man? Answer 2: A two colors. Question 3: What style did the man think wouldn t suit the woman? Answer 3: C a perm. The above groups and exercises should be seen as a sample of the dialogues given in the exam and should not be taken as a complete picture. The only way for you to become competent is through practice. Remember practice makes perfect. Good luck! 8

F: Er that s not him. That s our captain. Q: Which photo doesn t show her boyfriend? 11 F: My lollipop is in the shape of a flower. Mmm, lovely. M: Mine s an aeroplane. F: Which ones shall we get tomorrow? M: Let s both get the same an animal one. Q: What has the boy got? 12 F: I ve got so many small jobs to do today as well as the weekly shopping. I ve just loaded the washing machine and now I ll see to that cupboard in the kitchen. M: What s wrong with it? F: One of the doors is loose and M: Don t worry, I ve got that covered. Q: Which job won t the woman have to do? 10

11 13 14 F: Well look at this. It says a dog saved some people in an earthquake. Dogs are very clever, aren t they? M: All animals are. They say, for example, that an elephant never forgets. F: Mmm yes. I had a friend once whose parrot used to shout HELLO whenever the phone rang. It made us laugh. Ha, ha! Q: Why did the woman laugh? F: Listen. What s that noise? It sounds like a car alarm. M: No I don t think it is. It sounds more like a police siren. F: Er no. It must be a fire-truck. M: Goodness! I hope it s not a big fire. Q: Where is the noise coming from? F: Will you do my shopping for me, Frank. Here s my shopping list. M: Sure, honey. Right let s see coffee, milk, sugar er m is that an m m eat. Meat. Is that what it says? Oh wait a minute. That s not an m. Does it say tea? F: Let me have a look. Oh, er I can t make it out myself. Oh, I know. It says bread. Q: What s the word on the shopping-list? F: What do you think we should have for dessert at our wedding reception, Steve? M: Aren t we going to have a wedding cake? You know, with the tiny bride and groom on top? F: Yes, of course, but for extra. We could choose between lemon cake squares with a slice of lemon on top or tiny chocolate rolls. M: Mmm stick with the lemon squares. Q: What will the wedding guests be offered? M: Yeah, hi. I m looking for a mixer that F: Oh yes. We ve got these. They do everything Make cakes M: No, I mean a smaller one that F: Oh yes. One of these hand mixers. They also do a lot of things whipped cream M: Er I m looking for a small one for making frothy coffee in the glass. Q: What kind of mixer does the man want? 18 F: Do you think we could stop and eat something? M: We ll be at the hotel soon and then we can have a meal. That would be best. F: Yes I know but I feel a bit dizzy with all this driving and I need something in my stomach. M: Well there s some fruit in one of the bags or you can have this candy bar. F: I suppose I d better wait. Q: What would be best for her to eat? 11

12 19 F: Why don t you join the Sports Center I go to? You can do many kinds of sport. M: What do you do? F: I learn judo but you can do kick-boxing or aerobic dancing or anything you like. M: Well, certainly not that last one! Q: What does the woman do? 20 F: Phew! I m a bit late. Sorry. It s my watch. The hands are so small I can t tell the time. Q: What does her watch look like? 21 F: Aren t we going to that concert this weekend? M: Which one? The Modern Classic concert? That s booked solid for the next six months. F: No not that one. Q: Which box will he choose? 24 M: Here are some pictures of my family. F: Ah these are really old! It s a good thing they re safe in this photo album. M: Yes, they were in terrible condition. You should ve seen how my grandmother had them. Piles everywhere. I even found quite a few in one of her old bags. Q: Where are the photos now? 12

13 25 F: Oh, my right wrist hurts me. It s probably from carrying all these heavy shopping bags. I m worried because my left wrist hurt me a couple of months ago when I lifted a heavy chair. M: Perhaps you should see a doctor. My foot hurt me some time ago from playing football and now my doctor told me to have an X-ray. Q: What caused her left wrist to hurt? 26 F: How do you come to work, Jack? Have you got a car? M: Yes. It s an old mini. Very small but better than what I had last year. F: What was that? Just fill in this application form. Put your name, address, telephone number and previous job experience. F: But this will be my first job. And I m new in town and staying with friends. M: Well just leave those parts blank. Q: What will the girl s application form look like? 28 F: Hey Sam, good news. I got the job! I m going to be a model. M: Well you certainly look the part. F: Good morning Mr Green. Could I have a word with you, please? M: Sure, come in. F: It s about some blinds for my office windows. The sun comes in a lot and it makes working difficult. M: Ah, yes. You ve got the corner office with windows on two sides. F: Yes, and they re big windows too. Q: What does her office look like? F: My husband and I have been on a tight budget since we bought our summer-vacation house. M: Wow! That must be great! Coming out of your door straight onto the beach and then having drinks on your veranda. F: Well, it s not really near the sea. It s up on a hill and it s very small. And er I m afraid there s no balcony. Q: Which house did the man have in mind? 13

What can be found on the website? a. original student plays b. student reviews of plays c. suggestions for the assignment d. the professor s office hours LISTENING TRANSCRIPT F: Hello everyone. There are quite a few people absent today, but I ll still tell you about the endof-year assignment. Now remember, (31) you must all do this assignment in order to pass the year. It doesn t matter how well you ve done during the rest of the year in your exams and class performance - (31) I will not pass anyone who fails to do this. Basically, what I want you all to do is to attend two different performances and combine them into one play which you will perform, either by yourself, or in pairs. (32) I should point out that you should keep away from choosing two similar performances. It will make your own play less interesting, (33) both to write, and to perform. Now I know that (33/34) it s difficult to write and perform, so that s why I ll be extending my office hours until the end of the year. Feel free to ask me for any help you want, but be sure to make an appointment with my secretary first. I m Jennifer Bales, from the University of Los Angeles. (37) Today I ll be giving you some advice on how to get into our university. Believe me, most universities are looking for similar qualifications, and we are no exception. I think the most important thing to remember is that at ULA we get applications from a lot more students than we can accept. So, (38) to get into ULA you need to be a lot better than the average student. For example, theoretically, you only need a 60% grade to apply, but last year, all of our new students had 70% or higher. If you want (39) to see how your grades compare to other applicants, you should take a look at our interactive website. All you do is type in the information it asks you for and you can (39) get a rough idea of where you stand in comparison with other applicants. Now, I m sure there are some of you who are wondering (40) What s so good about ULA? Well, if that s the case, come on down to our exhibition at the expo center. We have a long desk with tons of information about our university and the courses we offer. You can learn about who we really are, and if this really is the right place for you! 15

LISTENING TRANSCRIPT M: Good afternoon everyone and welcome to one of the largest sales teams on the east coast. (41) We, at Atlas Tapes, are definitely one of the most successful companies producing adhesive tapes, staples and other office supplies - and we re proud of our track record. I must say, you all look quite enthusiastic, which is the right attitude to have if you want to get ahead. I m the head of sales, (42) and according to my watch Ernest Craig, the Vice President of the Company, should have been here already to tell you about how our company is structured. Hmm, he must be running a bit behind schedule. Never mind, I ll just have to continue, but I do want you to meet Mr. Craig; he was a top salesperson before moving up in the company, (43) and you could all take a page out of his book. He s quite an incredible man in many ways. Now (44) I m going to talk to you about what your main priorities must be when you go out to meet our clients. It s important for you all to know what we expect of you and how you can achieve this. Of course, for the first month, you will all be doing intensive sales courses, as well as learning everything you need to know about our extensive product line. We don t want you going out there unprepared! And no need to worry - (45) on your first assignments you ll always be accompanied by some of our most experienced sales staff. No matter how much theory you know, (46) there s nothing like a hands-on approach, and watching talented salespeople do their thing. 16

Most of the participants will leave the race if it rains. b. The winners of the race will be hard to spot. c. The bad weather will make it clear who are the better sailors. d. The speaker was wrong in his predictions. LISTENING TRANSCRIPT M: Hi, this is Andrew Thorn, reporting from Florida, the city which is hosting the Super Yacht Race this year. Super yachts are super expensive boats owned by super rich people. (47) And these rich people are the ones who take part in this race. I m sure a lot of you are wondering why they would bother to race their expensive boats. I mean, it s like having a race for people who own Rolls Royces or expensive private jets. Anyhow, yesterday was the opening day of the event, and let me tell you, the weather conditions couldn t have been better - (48) a typical spring day. (49) The wind was strong, but not too powerful; the weather was sunny, but not too hot everything was perfect for both the spectators and the participants. Today, however, seems to be a different matter altogether. We are seeing some dark clouds on the horizon, and the weatherman has predicted thunderstorms a little later. Of course, this will make things harder for our yachtsmen (50) and it will no doubt separate the men from the boys. Personally, I think difficult weather conditions make the race more interesting. I was afraid that in Florida, all we d get would be sunshine and clear skies, but I guess I was wrong! There are already two yacht owners I know of who are thinking about withdrawing from the race because of the predicted change in the weather. I can t wait to see who s left at the end of the day! 17
