5 Greek Community Care Centre Development of a Greek Community within Charleswood Care Centre May 27/15 Goal: to develop a grouping of Greek Residents within the care centre. Ideally, with a large enough group there would be the opportunity to re-design one unit for the Greek Residents to include an adjoining lounge and dining area. Considerations: Menu and diet with opportunities to enjoy traditional Greek foods Celebration of significant Greek Orthodox events: Christmas, Easter and Annunciation of the Virgin Mary (August 15th) Opportunities for the priest from the Greek Orthodox Church to visit and provide services if desired. Opportunities for members of the Greek Community to visit with several Residents together in a group setting. Opportunities for members of the Greek community to come and provide entertainment and share other aspects of the culture with other Residents and staff to help the larger care centre population understand the Greek culture more fully. Tours for members of the Greek community to become familiar with the care centre. All of the above considerations are possible now within our current set-up and structure. This would help to build the sense of understanding and unity with the Greek community. Next steps: Members of the Seniors Group to visit the care centre to become more familiar with the structure and set up. They will be the main contact for the day to day planning going forward. Shelley Ireland, Social Worker from the care centre will be the primary contact to discuss placement of residents at the care centre and to provide tours. Linda Sundevic, Executive Director will be the primary contact for the development of a grouping of Residents and discussions of a partnership to develop common and dining space (construction). 6 Thoughts from our Parish Priest Αγαπητοί εν Χριστώ, Πολλές φορές, όταν αντιμετωπίζουμε τις αμαρτίες μας, βρισκόμαστε σε πειρασμό να πέσουμε σε απελπισία. Η αίσθηση της ενοχής, όταν την αντιμετωπίζουμε και τη χρησιμοποιούμε σωστά, μπορεί να μας οδηγήσει στην εξομολόγηση των αμαρτιών μας, τη μετάνοια, και τη συμφιλίωση με τον Θεό. Από την άλλη μεριά, η απελπισία μπορεί να μας οδηγήσει σε περισσότερο σκοτάδι με το κάνοντας μας να νομίζουμε ότι οι αμαρτίες μας είναι τόσο σοβαρές που δεν μπορούν συγχωρηθούν. Αυτές τις στιγμές ξεχνάμε ότι μέσω της δύναμης του Θεού και της μετάνοιας μας, κάθε πνευματική αρρώστια θεραπεύεται. Πρέπει να θυμόμαστε πως αν και οι αμαρτίες μας πληγώνουν, δεν μας σκοτώνουν. Υπάρχει μεγάλη διαφορά μεταξύ της πνευματικής πληγής και του πνευματικού θανάτου. Αν και είμαστε πληγωμένοι από τις αμαρτίες μας, οι πληγές θεραπεύονται. Αν όμως αφήσουμε τις πληγές να μείνουν, τότε κινδυνεύουμε να πεθάνουμε πνευματικά. Αυτός ο πνευματικός θάνατος μας κρύβει από το φως του Χριστού, και μας ρίχνει στο σκοτάδι της απελπισίας, της άρνησης ότι υπάρχει συγχώρεση για τις αμαρτίες μας. Υπάρχει λόγος που ακόμα και γιατροί πηγαίνουν σε άλλους γιατρούς όταν είναι άρρωστοι. Δεν μπορούμε να εντοπίσουμε και να θεραπεύσουμε τη δική μας αρρώστια. Αν βρεθούμε στη μέση του λαβυρίνθου δεν μπορεί να δει την έξοδο, αλλά κάποιος πάνω από τον λαβύρινθο μπορεί να δει την έξοδο και να μας καθοδηγήσει. Ο θεραπευτής μας, ο οδηγός μας, είναι Αυτός που, από τον Σταυρό, ζήτησε έλεος για αυτούς που Τον σταυρώνανε, Αυτός που συγχώρεσε τους δολοφόνους και τους ληστές όπως ξεψυχούσε στον Σταυρό. Είναι ο ίδιος ο Ιησούς Χριστός ο οποίος ήρθε εκ μέρους των αμαρτωλών να θεραπεύσει τις ραγισμένες καρδιές και να δέσει τις πληγές τους, και τις πληγές μας. Ο Χριστός λέει, Το Πνεύμα του Κυρίου είναι πάνω Μου. Ο Χριστός (που σημαίνει Ο Διαλεκτός, ή Ο Χρισμένος), χρίστηκε με το Πνεύμα για αυτόν τον λόγο: να κηρύξει τα Καλά Νέα στον φτωχό, τον πονεμένο, και τον πληγωμένο. Ο Χριστός ήρθε να κηρύξει απελευθέρωση στον φυλακισμένο, την αποκατάσταση του φωτός στον τυφλό, και να δυναμώσει τον πληγωμένο μέσω της συγχώρεσης. Ο Χριστός ήρθε σε αυτόν τον κόσμο να σώσει τους αμαρτωλούς και να καλέσει τους άρρωστους κοντά Του, γιατί εμείς οι πονεμένοι και πληγωμένοι Τον χρειαζόμαστε. Ο Χριστός ήρθε να θεραπεύσει τις πληγές μας, αλλά για αυτούς που είναι πνευματικά νεκροί; Και πάλι, είναι ο Χριστός που έχει τη δύναμη ακόμα και να αναστήσει τους νεκρούς. Αυτοί που θα ακούσουν τη φωνή Του και το Ευαγγέλιο Του μπορούν να αναστηθούν ακόμα και από τον πνευματικό θάνατο. Ετσι, ας μαζευτούμε στην εκκλησία κάθε Κυριακή, όχι για να γιορτάσουμε την τελειότητα μας ή την καλοσύνη μας, αλλά για να θεραπεύσουμε τις πνευματικές πληγές μας, με την κλίση των καρδιών και κεφαλιών μας στον Θεό, ώστε να λάβουμε τη συγχώρεση Του, το έλεος Του, και την αγάπη Του, και να λάβουμε το Άγιο Σώμα και Αίμα Του. Αρχίζοντας το εκκλησιαστικό έτος, ας έρθουμε στο πνευματικό νοσοκομείο μας, την εκκλησία. Με προσευχή και μετάνοια, ας δούμε τις πνευματικές πληγές μας και ας τις δώσουμε στον Χριστό, ώστε να λάβουμε τη θεραπεία Του. Τον Σεπτέμβριο αρχίζει από την αρχή το εκκλησιαστικό ημερολόγιο. Ας ετοιμαστούμε τώρα για αυτό το ταξίδι, στο οποίο θα γιορτάσουμε τους Αγίους της Εκκλησίας μαζί με την Ενσάρκωση, Έλεος, Αγιο Πάθος, Θάνατο, και Ανάσταση του Θεού μας. Μην αφήνετε τον πειρασμό να σας παραπλανήσει και να πιστεύετε ότι οι αμαρτίες σας είναι πολύ μεγάλες για τον Θεό. Τίποτα δεν είναι μεγαλύτερο από τον Θεό μας, και δεν υπάρχει μεγαλύτερη αγάπη και μεγαλύτερο έλεος από του Θεού. Εύχομαι ένα ευλογημένο νέο εκκλησιαστικό έτος σε όλους σας. Εν Χριστώ, π. 7 Thoughts from our Parish Priest Dear In Christ, Many times, when we come face to face with our sins, we are tempted to fall into despair. The feeling of guilt, when faced and used properly can lead us to the confession of our sins, repentance, and reconciliation with God. On the other hand, despair can lead us further into darkness, by making us think that our sins are so serious that they cannot possibly be forgiven. At those times we forget that through the power of God and our repentance, every spiritual illness is curable. We must remember that even though our sins wound us spiritually, they do not kill us. There is a big difference between a spiritual wound and spiritual death. Though we are wounded by our sins, wounds can be healed. If we let those wounds fester, then we are in danger of spiritual death, which removes us from the light of Christ and plunges us into the darkness of despair - of refusal that there is forgiveness for our sins. There is a reason that even doctors visit other doctors when they are ill. We simply cannot diagnose and cure ourselves. If we are in the middle of a labyrinth we cannot see the exit, but someone above the labyrinth sees the end and guides us. Our healer, our guide, is the One Who, when on the Cross, asked for mercy for those who were crucifying Him, Who forgave murderers and thieves as He died on the Cross. It is Jesus Christ Himself Who came on behalf of sinners to heal the broken-hearted and bind their wounds - our wounds. Christ explains, The Spirit of the Lord is upon Me. The Christ (translation: The Anointed One) was anointed with the Spirit for this reason: to proclaim the Good News to the poor, the broken, and the wounded. Christ came to proclaim deliverance to the prisoner, recovery of sight to the blind, and to strengthen the wounded by forgiveness. Christ came into this world to save sinners, and to call the sick to Him, because it is we, the broken and wounded who need Him. Christ came to heal our wounds, but what of those who are spiritually dead? Again, it is Jesus Christ Himself Who has the power to raise even the dead. Those who will hear His voice and His Gospel can be raised even from spiritual death. So let s gather at church every Sunday, not to celebrate our perfection or our goodness, but to heal our spiritual wounds, by bowing our hearts and heads to God to receive His forgiveness, mercy, healing, and love, and to partake of His Holy Body and Blood. As we start our new ecclesiastical year, let s come to our spiritual hospital, our church. Through prayer and repentance, let us see our spiritual wounds and bring them to Christ, so we can receive His healing. In September, we start the cycle of the Feasts of the Church again. Let us prepare from now for this journey, which will find us celebrating the Saints of our Church as well as the Incarnation, mercy, passion, death, and Resurrection of our God. Do not let temptation fool you into thinking that your sins are too great for God. Nothing is greater than our God, and there is no greater love and healing than His. 8 Message from the Community President Αγαπητοί συμπάρικοι, Η συμμετοχή μου στην Κληρικολαική ήταν σε γενικές γραμμές ωφέλιμη και εποικοδομητική. Ενημερώσαμε και ενημερωθήκαμε όλοι για ό, τι γίνεται στις άλλες κοινότητες. Θέλω να πιστεύω, πως εδώ στο Winnipeg επειδή είμαστε κάπως πιο απομονωμένοι η ζωή μας είναι πιο ήρεμη και αρμονική σε σχέση με τις κοινότητες των μεγάλων πολιτειών. Όλες οι ομάδες μας είχαν μεγάλοι επιτυχία, η Φιλόπτωχος, τα συμβούλια, οι ιερείς, αλλά και η νεολαία με αρχηγό την Angela French, που μας αντιπροσώπευσε παραδειγματικά. Εύχομαι επιτυχία και για τα επόμενα χρόνια. Μια αλλαγή που θα έχουμε σύντομα και είναι απαίτηση του Revenue Canada είναι να γίνει η Φιλόπτωχος incorporated και θα έχετε ενημέρωση για κάθε εξέλιξη. Η κυρία Debby Vlahos εξελέγει 5η αντιπρόεδρος (στη θέση της Vicky Scouras) αντιπροσωπεύοντας Saskatchewan και Manitoba. Της ευχόμαστε κάθε επιτυχία. Η νέα πρόεδρος της Μητροπολιτικής Φιλοπτώχου είναι η κυρία Σαπφώ Ραζιά. Κάποια από τα θέματα που συζητήθηκαν και αποφασίστηκαν στην Κληρικολαική είναι κάθε κοινότητα να έχει κατασκηνώσεις για τη νεολαία. Βέβαια σε κάποιες κοινότητες υπάρχουν ήδη κατασκηνώσεις και εμείς είμαστε μια από αυτές. Ο Σεβασμιώτατος προτρέπει τους γονείς, τους ιερείς και τους δασκάλους των σχολείων και κατηχητικών να μαθαίνουν στους νέους να παρίστανται στη Θεία Λειτουργία, να ψέλνουν μαζί ως το Ευαγγέλιο, μετά να κατεβαίνουν για την κατήχηση και να ανεβαίνουν για τη Θεία Κοινωνία. Η συμμετοχή στη Θεία Λειτουργία από όλους μας είναι πολύ σημαντική. Το μήνυμα του είναι: Είναι καλύτερα να προσευχόμαστε από μόνοι μας, παρα να προσεύχονται μόνο άλλοι για μας. Επίσης, μας ενημέρωσε ότι το λεγόμενο Κογκρέσο βρίσκεται σε επανασχεδιασμό με διαφορετικό φυσικά όνομα. Όλοι οι Πρόεδροι των κοινοτήτων θα είναι μέλη και θα εκλέγουνε συμβούλιο, που θα μας αντιπροσωπεύουν στα εθνικά μας θέματα. Μια ακόμα ευχάριστη είδηση είναι, ότι το Montreal βρίσκεται σε καλή σχέση με την Αρχιεπισκοπή. Στα του οίκου μας ελπίζω όλοι να είχατε ένα πολύ καλό καλοκαίρι και να ήρθατε ανανεωμένοι με καλές ιδέες και ενέργεια για να κάνουμε, ό,τι καλύτερο μπορούμε για την κοινότητα μας. 9 Message from the Community President Dear fellow members, My participation in the Clergy Laity Conference was useful and constructive. We were informed and updated about what is happening in other communities. I believe that here in Winnipeg, although we are somewhat isolated, our lives are more calm and harmonious in relation to other communities in larger cities. All of our organizations in attendance had a great experience; the Ladies of Philoptochos, councils, priests, and our youth under the exemplary leadership of Angela French. I wish continued success for future years. Due to requirements from Revenue Canada, the Ladies of Philoptochos will soon need to become incorporated. We will keep you informed of further developments. Mrs. Debby Vlahos was elected 5th Vice President (in place of Vicky Scouras) representing Saskatchewan and Manitoba. We wish her every success. The new president of the Metropolitan Philoptochos is Ms. Sapho Razia. One of the items discussed at the Clergy Laity Conference is that every community must have a camp for their youth. Some communities already have camps, and we are one of them. His Eminence Metropolitan Sotirios encourages parents, priests, teachers of Greek School and Sunday School to teach our young people to attend church service early, and to learn to chant along during the Divine Liturgy from the beginning to the Holy Gospel, then go down for Sunday School, and come back for Holy Communion. The participation in chanting along with the Liturgy is very important. His message is: It is better to pray for ourselves, than to only leave others to pray for us. The Canadian Hellenic Congress has ceased to exist. A new Greek-Canadian Congress is being organized in its place. All Greek Orthodox Community Presidents will be members, and will be responsible in electing the Congress Board of Directors, which will represent us in our national issues. One more positive update is that Montreal is in good terms with the Archdiocese. To our own affairs, I hope everyone had a great summer and came back refreshed with good ideas and energy to do the best that we can for our community. I will keep you informed of any developments. 11 Church Etiquette When attending Divine Services we all have the responsibility of maintaining proper decorum and atmosphere in the church. The very first thing to keep in mind is that we are to be at Divine Services on time. The church is the House of God. Reverence and good manners are required at all times. No irreverent or irrelevant conversations should go on in the Narthex or in the church proper. There are certain times during the Divine Services when no one should be moving about, or entering the church, or being seated at a pew. Wherever a person happens to be at these moments, he or she should stop and stand reverently until the proper moment to be seated. These times are: 1. During the Doxology, while the priest is censing. 2. During the Small Entrance - The procession of the priest and altar boys with the Holy Gospel. 3. When the priest censes the Altar, icons, and congregation throughout the Divine Liturgy. 4. During the reading of the Epistle and Gospel. 5. During the sermon. 6. During the Great Entrance - the procession of the priest and altar boys with the Holy Gifts. 7. During the recitation of the Creed and Lord s Prayer (Our Father). 8. During the Consecration of the Holy Gifts. (Se Imnoumen) 9. During Holy Communion.To receive Holy Communion the faithful should come forth from the side aisles and exit via the centre aisle to return to their pew. 10. When receiving any sacrament of the church, use your baptismal/chrismation name. 11. During any special services such as Memorials or blessing of the loaves, special doxologies, etc. The general rule is that whenever the priest is outside the Holy Altar either with the censer or for giving a blessing, there should be no movement in the church. Also, we remind everyone that we should attend the Divine Liturgy and all services of divine worship from the beginning. Please remember that Parish Council members are obligated to maintain order and decorum in the church during worship. Please try to understand us. Cooperate with us. 13 Εκκλησιαστική Εθιμοτυπία Όταν είμαστε στην εκκλησία, όλοι έχουμε την ευθύνη να κρατήσουμε την σωστή ευπρέπεια και ατμόσφαιρα του ναού. Το πρώτο πράγμα που πρέπει να θυμόμαστε είναι ότι πρέπει να είμαστε στην εκκλησία στην ώρα μας. Η εκκλησία είναι ο οίκος του Θεού. Η ευλάβεια και οι σωστοί τρόποι απαιτούνται πάντα. Δεν πρέπει να γίνεται άσχετη ή ασεβής συζήτηση στον Νάρθηκα ή μέσα στον ναό. Υπάρχουν μερικές στιγμές στις ακολουθίες που κανένας δεν πρέπει να κινείται, η να μπαίνει στην εκκλησία, η να κάθεται. Όπου και να βρίσκεται ο άνθρωπος σε αυτές τις στιγμές, πρέπει να σταματήσει και να σταθεί όρθιος με σεβασμό έως την κατάλληλη στιγμή να καθίσει. Αυτές οι στιγμές είναι, 1. Στην Δοξολογία, όταν ο ιερέας θυμιάζει. 2. Στην Μικρή Είσοδο, στην διάρκεια της πομπής του Ευαγγελίου με τα ιερόπαιδα και τον ιερέα. 3. Όταν ο ιερέας θυμιάζει το Ιερό, τις εικόνες, και τον κόσμο στην διάρκεια της Θείας Λειτουργίας. 4. Στην ανάγνωση του Αποστόλου και του Ευαγγελίου. 5. Στο κήρυγμα. 6. Στην Μεγάλη Είσοδο, στην διάρκεια της πομπής των Αγίων Δώρων με τα ιερόπαιδα και τον ιερέα. 7. Στην απαγγελία του Πιστεύω και της Κυριακής Προσευχής (Πάτερ Ημών). 8. Στην Αναφορά (καθαγίαση) Των Αγίων Δώρων (Στον ύμνο Σε Υμνούμεν). 9. Στην Θεία Κοινωνία. Για να λάβουν τη Θεία Κοινωνία, οι πιστοί έρχονται από το πλάι και επιστρέφουν στις θέσεις τους από το μεσαίο διάδρομο. 10. Όταν λαμβάνουμε ένα Μυστήριο της Εκκλησίας, χρησιμοποιούμε το βαπτιστικό μας όνομα. 11. Σε ειδικές ακολουθίες, σαν τα μνημόσυνα, τις αρτοκλασίες, ειδικές δοξολογίες, κλπ. Ο γενικός κανόνας είναι, όταν ο ιερέας είναι εκτός του Ιερού, είτε με το θυμιατό ή για να δώσει ευλογία, δεν γίνεται κίνηση στην εκκλησία. Επίσης, θυμίζουμε όλους ότι πρέπει να είμαστε στην Λειτουργία και σε όλες τις ακολουθίες από την αρχή. Μη ξεχνάτε ότι τα μέλη του συμβουλίου είναι υποχρεωμένα να κρατήσουν την τάξη και την ευπρέπεια στην εκκλησία. Ζητάμε την κατανόηση σας. Συνεργαστείτε μαζί μας. Οι ιερείς είναι εδώ να υπηρετήσουν. 16 Church Iconography Program Beloved in Christ, In this bulletin you will find the program of our iconography, as well as a sample of what the icons will look like. On the page with the icons, the top layer is the New Testament icons, which will be put up on the right side of the church (as you face the Altar). The bottom layer is the Old Testmanent icons, which will be put up on the left side of the church. The theme is Promise and Fulfillment, and it depicts the promises given by God in the Old Testament, and the parallel, or fulfillment of that promise in the New Testament. The icons that have not been crossed out are the ones still available. These icons will be installed on the top halves of the side walls of our church. We are also installing icons of individuals saints along the lower halves of the side walls of the church. There is no program for these icons, meaning that each donor can choose the saint to be depicted (as long as it hasn t been donated or reserved painted already). I can give you some suggestions if you d like. Finally, we are changing the small icons on the iconostasis (temblon) of our Altar, as the current ones have been aged and darkened. This is the list of the icons needing replacement on the Iconostasis: - The Annunciation of the Theotokos - The Presentation of the child Jesus to the Temple - The Raising of Lazarus from the dead - Doubting Thomas - The Ascension of Christ - The Holy Pentecost The price for a scriptural scene (upper half of the walls) panel is $9, The price for an individual saint (lower half of the walls) is $2, The price for the icons on the Iconostasis is $2, You can also make a general donation toward the iconography of the church. 18 Greetings from the Ladies of Philoptochos Greetings: A very blessed ecclesiastical new year to all! I m happy to share a little bit about our wonderful and event filled summer. Our first meeting is September 9th. We meet the first Wednesday of every month unless otherwise noted. All our welcome. First to kick off the summer, we had great local representation at the 28th Bi-annual Clergy Laity conference in St. Catharines, Ontario, with a total of three Philoptochos members attending. The theme this year was Let your word be yes and no. A big thank you to the host church for all the hard work and organization that went into making this event inspirational and educational. It was a great privilege to spend time with our fellow sisters from across Canada. As always we extend an open invitation to all the Ladies in our community to join Philoptochos, together we can make a meaningful impact in our communities for the Glory of God. And then of course, our biggest event of the year, Folklorama! Wow, 46 years and going strong!! There are not enough words to express my gratitude to all in our community who volunteered their time and talents to make Folklorama such a success! Thank you! Thank You! Thank You! We look forward to a new year of philanthropic endeavors. On Saturday, September 26th the Seniors, The Forever Young are hosting a mouth watering back to the 50 s feast. We look forward to supporting our wonderful community members and to dress up in our poodle skirts, bobby socks, white t-shirts and jeans once again! Our hands of love are continuously extended with a renewed zeal for our philanthropic endeavours, the need is great around us, and we look forward to helping whomever the Lord brings to us. 19 Χαίρετίσματα απο τις Κυρίες της Φιλοπτώχου Με πολλλες ευχες για μια ευλογημενη εκκλησιαστικη χρονια σε ολους! ξεκιναμε και παλι τις συναντησεις της Φιλοπτωχου καθε πρωτη Τεταρτη του μηνα στις 7 μ.μ. στο χωλλ της εκκλησιας μας εκτος του Σεπτεμβριου που θα γινει την δευτερη Τεταρτη στις 9 του μηνα και προσκαλουμε ολες τις κυριες και δεσποινιδες να γινουν μελη σε αυτη την θαυμασια ιεραποστολη. Οπως ολοι μας γνωριζουμε η αγαπη μας ειναι διχως συνορα, φτανει παντου, χαρη στην δικη σας υποστηριξη. Πολυ σωστα λοιπον θα ελεγα πως ολοι εισαστε επιτημα μελη! Στις αρχες του Ιουλιου 3 μελη της αδελφοτητος παρακολουθησαμε την 28 η κληρολαικη συνελευση. Στη Αγια Αικατερινη του Ονταριου μια πολυ ομορφη πολη με ωραοτατη εκκλησια και κοινοτητα και οπως σε καθε συνελευση απολαυσαμε την φιλοξενια των αδελφων σε ολο της το μεγαλειο. Πολλη δουλεια και πολλη αγαπη. Το θεμα πολυ ωραιο και παντα επικαιρο ο λογος μας να ειναι Ναι η Οχι απλα λογια και εφαρμοσιμα. Πολλα διδαχτικαμε και πολλα αποκομισαμε απο την ομορφη αυτη εμπειρια. Λογια δεν επαρκουν να ευχαριστησω ολους οσους βοηθησαν και αυτη την χρονια στο Φολκλοραμα που στεφθηκε με φοβερη επιτυχια. Ευχαριστω! ευχαριστω! ευχαριστω! Και του χρονου! Ειναι στο αιμα μας να δινουμε τον καλλιτερο εαυτον μας για την προβολη της Πατριδας μας και της Κοινοτητας μας. Μια εξαιρετικη βραδυα μας περιμενει ολους στις 26 Σεπτεμβριου οργανωμενη απο τους ακουραστους για παντα νεοι ηλικιωμενους μας με νοστιμοτατο φαγητο και ανανδρομη στον καιρο του 50 με το αναλογο ντυσιμο.
