Ημερολόγιo ST. SPYRIDON HELLENIC ORTHODOX CHURCH S. RIDGELAND AVE. PALOS HEIGHTS, IL WWW. SAINT- SPYRIDON.ORG Catechism 101 On the seventh Sunday after Pascha, the Orthodox Church commemorates the Holy Fathers who participated in the 1 st Ecumenical Synod. Unfortunately, when we hear the words Holy Fathers we usually tune out, categorizing such figures as ancient and irrelevant. Yet, in our Orthodox calendar, there are three separate occasions on which the Church sets forth the commemoration of the Holy Fathers of the various councils that took place in the first eight centuries of Christian history. Obviously, the Church is attempting to convey something important: Our faith is the faith of our fathers, the faith of a church within history. Since, June 1 st was the date on which we commemorated the Holy Fathers of Nicea, I saw it fitting to dedicate this Catechism 101 article on why these commemorations are important. When we study our Christian history, we find out our theology. It is imperative that Christians, especially Orthodox Christians, have a firm grasp of our faith and of church history. Faith and history go together. We cannot separate church history from what we believe. The Orthodox understanding of truth is grounded in the Incarnation, the Son of God Annual Greek Festival July 12th & 13th, 2014

Because the Son of God entered into human history, truth consists of more than a set of logically consistent concepts. Our faith stems from the historical figure Jesus of Nazareth, who asserted: I am the Truth. When Orthodoxy claims that the Christian Faith is the true faith, it is asserting that it is a real faith, based on historical events that actually happened. Because Christianity is grounded in reality, our salvation in Christ is a real salvation that has an impact on both the spiritual and physical realities. This is especially true with the 1 st Ecumenical Council in 325 AD, when the Church came out of persecution and became accepted and relevant in history and culture. This council was called to address the heresy of Arius who taught that the Son of God had a beginning and was a created being. The controversy threatened deeply to divide the Christian Church, and in so doing to imperil the unity of the Roman Empire. Concerned for the unity of the empire, St. Constantine convened an ecumenical council of the entire Church. Previously there had been regional and local synods, but this was the first worldwide gathering of bishops. St. Constantine aided this historic gathering by covering the travel expenses of bishops coming from the far-flung corners of the empire. Among those who participated were St. Nicholas, St. Athanasios, and St. Spyridon. Among the accomplishments of the Holy Fathers of the 1 st Ecumenical Council are the composition of the Symbol of Faith, or Creed, the Biblical Canon, and the formula by which Pascha is determined. The most significant contribution however was Christianity's transformation from a private sect into a public church that encompassed the whole of society. The Church defined its unity; it acquired an institutional footing which enabled the Church to be the leading cultural force in the ancient world. For Orthodoxy, the Holy Fathers represent our link to the past. The persecuted underground Church and the official state Church are the same Church. The Orthodox Church believes that it stands in unbroken continuity with the Church of the first century. There is a popular belief among evangelicals that the true Church was the underground Church, which refused to compromise with the worldly state Church, and that this true Church remained in hiding over the following centuries, leaving few records of its existence until it was rediscovered by the Protestants in the sixteenth century. The main problem with this belief is not only the absence of supporting evidence, but the presence of contrary evidence. Eusebius, in Books IV and V of his History of the Church, provides a chronological listing of bishops that goes back to the original apostles. Present-day Orthodox bishops and patriarchs are able to trace their spiritual and historical lineage back to the original apostles, something that Protestants cannot do. The church of the martyrs is also the church of the Fathers, the church founded by Christ is also the church defined by the Ecumenical Councils. The church that was illumined at Pentecost, at a specific time and place in history, is the church in which worship today, within history, within the presence of the historical Jesus Christ. Through the prayers of the Holy Fathers, Lord Jesus Christ, have mercy on us and save us. Amen. 2 The Voice

12 ICONOGRAPHY PROJECT T h e L a s t S u p p e r Ὁ Μ υ σ τ ι κ ό ς Δ ε ῖ π ν ο ς For when He was about to go forth to His voluntary, ever memorable, and life-giving death, on the night on which He was delivered up for the life of the world, He took bread in His holy and pure hands,...he gave it to His holy disciples and apostles saying: Take, eat, this is my body which is broken for you and for the forgiveness of sins. Divine Liturgy of St. Basil Here the Holy Apostles sit with Jesus Christ at His last Passover meal, which initiates a great Mystery, the first Holy Communion as revealed by God to us. St. John leans on His Master s breast, while Judas reaches for the dish showing who would betray Christ later that same night. The giving of His Body and His Blood to His Disciples before His Passion in Holy Communion brings the mystical and everlasting Kingdom into the life of the Apostles, who were the foundation here on earth of His Holy Church. This is why the title of this icon and this event is not the Last Supper, which is already finished when the Mystery begins, but the Mystical Supper of Christ. Only Judas is shown in profile, as only he had a hidden side of darkness, not open and loving as the other Apostles, who are shown with both eyes visible, a common iconographic form. We must remove through openness and love any hidden malice or selfishness from our own hearts to join them in preparing for this Mystical event. The table is rounded to show that there is always room for every one of us to come and partake of Him. The final phase is our iconography project is under way and soon the iconography of our beautiful edifice will be completed. All 34 medallions and 13 out of the 19 icons have been donated or pledged. Only six icons remain available for donations. All donors for each icon may be recognized and listed on our donor board and any size donation is welcome.
