News Philoptochos News Dear Faithful, TIME TO LIVE OUR ORTHODOX FAITH Each year at the beginning of September, the Orthodox Church leads its faithful into a cycle of prayers and commemorations that constitute the Liturgical year. The Liturgical year for us Orthodox Christians, serves as a special means of union with Christ. In the liturgical year, we are called to relive the whole life of Christ, from Christmas to Easter, from Easter to Pentecost. We are exhorted to unite ourselves to Christ in His birth and in His growth, to His suffering and death, to Christ in triumph and to Christ inspiring His Church. The liturgical year forms Christ in us. The Liturgical year is Christ Himself. September, the first month of the new Liturgical or Ecclesiastical year offers us the opportunity to recognize our lives spiritually after the summer holidays. Our Church offers us through her many and varied activities, the opportunity to begin this earnest work of salvation. However, none is more important than our participation in the Divine Liturgy, where the Eucharist (Holy Communion) unites us intimately with Christ. No matter how good our intentions are, as we enter the "New Ecclesiastical Year", the change that we are looking for will not occur unless we seek to put Christ first into our lives. With the beginning of many of our secular activities and the formulation of our "social" and "sports" calendars, first we must set our priorities and focus on Christ to be the center of our lives and to be with us in all of our activities. The St. George Church, which is a community of Christ Himself, offers many activities and ways for us to learn and live a Christ-centered life through the Orthodox faith and heritage. We, as the faithful believers, are the Body of the Church, and it is important that we help the Church offer itself to others. We can do this if we support and participate in our Church's activities through her various ministries: The Ladies Philoptochos, the GOYA, the Adult and Junior Choirs, the Sunday Religious Education Program, the Greek Language Program, as members of the Parish Council, and being good, faithful and giving Stewards. By serving our Church and putting Christ in the center of our lives, we help to expand the good virtuous life that is exemplified by our deeds and we attract others to the redemptive message of Jesus. The Church is a Community of the Spirit. Let each of us then resolve with the beginning of this new Ecclesiastical year to become reborn and recommitted to Christ and to St. George by coming together at the Eucharist (Holy Communion) and worship services. By participating and being a part of St. George programs, we place emphasis where it belongs, in growing spiritually and ministering to one another to live a truly Christ-centered life, for our faith has made us brothers and sisters; love has made us neighbors; compassion has made us children of God. 4 Page 4 September/October 2012 Αγαπητοί εν Χριστώ Αδελφοί, Κάθε χρόνο στις αρχές Σεπτεμβρίου, η Ορθόδοξος Εκκλησία οδηγεί τους πιστούς της σ' ένα κύκλο προσευχών και εορτών που αποτελούν το Λειτουργικό Έτος. Το Λειτουργικό Έτος για μας τους Ορθοδόξους χριστιανούς, είναι ένα ειδικό μέσο επικοινωνίας με τον Χριστό. Το Λειτουργικό πρόγραμμα μας καλεί να ζήσουμε τη ζωή του Χριστού, από τα Χριστούγεννα μέχρι το Πάσχα, από το Πάσχα μέχρι την Πεντηκοστή. Μας παραινεί να ενώσουμε τη ζωή μας με την Γέννηση και τον Βίο του Χριστού, τα Πάθη Του μέχρι τον θάνατόν Του, τον Θριαμβευτή Χριστό και εμπνευστή της Εκκλησίας. Το Λειτουργικό Έτος πλάθει τον Χριστό μέσα μας. Είναι ο ίδιος ο Χριστός. Ο Σεπτέμβριος, ο πρώτος μήνας του εκκλησιαστικού ημερολογίου, μας προσφέρει την ευκαιρία να επανακτήσουμε την πνευματική μας ζωή μετά τις θερινές διακοπές. Η Εκκλησία μας προσφέρει μέσω των ποικίλων προγραμμάτων την ευκαιρία ν' αρχίσουμε το έργο της σωτηρίας, αλλά τίποτα άλλο δεν έχει σημαντικότερη σημασία από την συμμετοχή μας στην Θεία Λειτουργία, όπου η Θεία Κοινωνία μας ενώνει με τον Χριστό. Ανεξαρτήτως του πόσο ειλικρινείς είναι οι διαθέσεις μας, όταν εισερχόμαστε στο «Νέο Εκκλησιαστικό Έτος», η αλλαγή που ελπίζουμε να επέλθει, δεν θα επέλθει αν δεν αφήσουμε τον Χριστό να εδρεύει μέσα στη ζωή μας. Προγραμματίζοντας τα κοινωνικά, αθλητικά και άλλα ψυχαγωγικά προγράμματα, προτεραιότητα θα πρέπει να δώσουμε στον Χριστό και να τον καταστήσουμε επίκεντρο των σκέψεων μας. Η Εκκλησία του Αγίου Γεωργίου η οποία ΜΗΝΥΜΑ ΤΟΥ ΙΕΡΕΑ ΜΑΣ ΚΑΙΡΟΣ ΝΑ ΖΗΣΟΥΜΕ ΤΗΝ ΟΡΘΟΔΟΞΟ ΠΙΣΤΗ ΜΑΣ είναι η Κοινότητα του ίδιου του Χριστού, προσφέρει πολλά προγράμματα και εκδηλώσεις για να εκπαιδευτούμε ως προς το πως να ζήσουμε τη ζωή μας με κέντρο τον Χριστό και την Ορθόδοξο Πίστη και Παράδοση. Σαν πιστοί Χριστιανοί, είμαστε το Σώμα του Χριστού και είναι σημαντικό να βοηθήσουμε την Εκκλησία να προσφέρει την συμπαράσταση της στους άλλους. Αυτό μπορούμε να το κατορθώσουμε, αν υποστηρίξουμε και λάβουμε μέρος στα ποικίλα προγράμματα των διάφορων οργανισμών όπως η Φιλόπτωχος, η Νεολαία, η Χορωδία, το Κατηχητικό Σχολείο, το Ελληνικό Σχολείο, το Εκκλησιαστικό Συμβούλιο και να είστε καλοί και πιστοί ενισχυτές της Εκκλησίας. Υπηρετώντας την Εκκλησία και θέτοντας τον Χριστό στο επίκεντρο της ζωής μας συμβάλλουμε στην διαιώνιση της ενάρετης ζωής που παραδειγματίζει με τις καλές πράξεις και προσελκύει άλλους στο μήνυμα του Κυρίου. Η Εκκλησία είναι μία Πνευματική Κοινότητα. Ας αποφασίσουμε όλοι μας, με την αρχή του εκκλησιαστικού Έτους, να αναγεννηθούμε και να επιστρέψουμε ξανά στον Χριστό και στην Εκκλησία του Αγίου Γεωργίου με τον τακτικό μας εκκλησιασμό και την μετάληψη της Θείας Κοινωνίας. Με το να γίνουμε αδιάσπαστα μέλη του Αγίου Γεωργίου και των προγραμμάτων του, δίνουμε έμφαση εκεί που πρέπει, στην πνευματική μας ανάπτυξη, βοηθώντας τους άλλους και ζώντας κοντά στον Χριστό, διότι η πίστη μας κάνει αδέλφια και η Αγάπη μας κάνει τέκνα του Θεού. 5 September/October 2012 Page 5 CLERGY - LAITY REPORT Chosen and appointed by God to go and bear fruit The biennial Clergy-Laity Congress of our Holy Archdiocese took place in Phoenix, Arizona from July 1 st thru July 5 th Our beloved St. George was represented by Father Nicholas and John Blazakis. Father Nicholas was among the 335 priests, about 3/5 of the total number of priests in our Archdiocese, attending the numerous meetings and workshops for the clergy as well as the plenary session at which reports of the various committees and missions of the Archdiocese were given. His Eminence Archbishop Demetrios, the Congress keynote speaker, expounded on the theme of the Congress: Chosen and appointed by God to go and bear fruit. His Eminence challenged all the delegates of the Congress to go and bear fruit in areas such as youth, and outreach to Orthodox Christians who have disconnected, or have no connection to the church. His Eminence, Metropolitan Gerasimos of San Francisco, the host hierarch of the Congress, in his remarks stated that The purpose of this congress is to grow in our faith and make decisions in our life together as one body and one Church. The process begins now, and we must go and bear fruit. To continue in Christ s salvific work and proclaim Orthodoxy will require new ideas and new strategies. That s why we are here; to learn from our Archdiocese and ministers and most importantly to learn from one another. Many questions were asked and many answers were given as far as the theme of the Congress was concerned. It was also decided that in this specific area, the Church must concentrate so that the Body of Christ can be built up. In conclusion, the 2012 Biennial Clergy-Laity Congress was very successful and very challenging. The challenge is, as Patriarch Bartholomew stated in his message to the Clergy-Laity, that all the members of the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America must pay close attention to their obligation to open the gates of your hearts to all those in America desiring to know Christ and His Orthodox Church. As representatives of our beloved St. George, we found it surprising and uplifting to hear the state of our Church in America. After four days of seminars, meetings, speeches and workshops, we came back strengthened and invigorated, ready to do whatever we can in support of our St. George and our beloved parish and community. I pray also that our very devoted and dedicated faithful will also follow in those same footsteps so that the theme of this year s Congress: Chosen and appointed by God to go and bear fruit. 6 Page 6 September/October 2012 PRESIDENT S MESSAGE Dear Parishioners, As you read this, all of you should be back from your summer vacations. I do hope that wherever you went you had a wonderful time and you are ready to settle in for the fall. Here is a brief report of what is happening in our Church and Community. Fr. Alex Kile is no longer with us. He departed this life rather early and he will be missed. He is part of our history, our heritage as a Church, having served us as our Ieraticos Proistamenos for several years. He was born and raised in Constantinoupoli, a member of most likely the last generation to do so in the once thriving and now dwindling Greek Community there. His tenure here may not have always been smooth, but it is undeniable that he was a very educated man, a multilingual man, an eloquent speaker and a true guardian of the old Orthodox liturgical traditions, some of which he introduced to our Church. We all wish and pray that his soul rests in peace. The mosaics in the front of our Church are now complete, giving our Church a totally new, more traditional Orthodox Church look. This finishes the Portico project, built in memory of Kostas and Demetra Gussis. Our thanks and gratitude go out once again to Connie, their daughter, and her husband, Mike Cherrillo, for their exemplary generosity that made this beautification project possible. The Church interior was just repainted and the icons, stained glass windows, and chandeliers were cleaned and polished. This renovation provides a brighter look and feeling of our Church interior, which I hope you find uplifting in your worship. One of the major projects in our Community, the renovation of our kitchen, is well under way. The work is being done by our own Vice President George Zalokostas, with supervision by the experienced Board member, George Athanasopoulos. Some of you were not in favor of this project. The basic argument against it was to wait and do it in conjunction with a larger project, the rearrangement of the office, the memorial room and the old Board room, which is now the priest s office, which would have brought the kitchen adjacent to the outside wall. I think this argument has a lot of merit. However, it is a very large, very costly project and your Board decided, and the general assembly approved, that we are not in a position to finance such a project at this time. Looking ahead, we did not see the opportunity to undertake a project of such magnitude for a number of years, because we need to first pay back the money we borrowed from some of you for the purchase of 7 Kroeger Lane. So, rather than staying with the old kitchen, with its limited space, its old, frequently malfunctioning, equipment and its difficult to keep clean environment, we opted to expand and modernize the existing kitchen. About half of the budget will go to the purchase of new equipment, which of course is a long term investment. They will still be usable if and when we implement the more ambitious room restructuring plan in the future. I regret to inform you, that another major project, the renovation of part of the old basement into a youth center, sponsored by the FOCUS group, is not going very well. We were hoping for a September 1 st completion date but, Mike Dimitrakis, the general contractor for the project, is overwhelmed with other work and has not being able to allocate resources for finishing the basement. Budgetary restrictions do not allow much flexibility for alternative courses of action. Let us hope Mike will be able to do it soon. One of my disappointments as a Board member and as your President is the lack of involvement and engagement by many and especially by the younger members of the Community to whom the future belongs!! I am presiding over a tired Board and a very limited number of the same volunteers who end up doing all the work, all the time. I do not know what needs to be done to change that. I welcome any suggestions. See you ALL at the general Assembly on Sunday October 14 and the Community Dance on Saturday October 20. 7 September/October 2012 Page 7 ΜΗΝΥΜΑ ΤΟΥ ΠΡΟΕΔΡΟΥ Αγαπητοί Ενορίτες, Όταν διαβάσετε αυτό το μήνυμα, όλοι πια θα έχετε επιστρέψει από τις καλοκαιρινές σας διακοπές. Ελπίζω ότι οπουδήποτε και αν πήγατε περάσατε ένα θαυμάσιο καλοκαίρι και τώρα είστε έτοιμοι να καλοδεχτείτε το Φθινόπωρο. Παρακάτω είναι μια σύντομη έκθεση για το τι συμβαίνει στη δική μας Εκκλησία και κοινότητα. Ο Πατέρας Αλέξανδρος Κιλέ δεν είναι πια μαζί μας. Αποδήμησε από τη παρούσα ζωή μάλλον πολύ νωρίς και θα μας λείψει. Είναι μέρος της ιστορίας, της κληρονομιάς της Εκκλησίας μας, έχοντας υπηρετήσει σαν Ιερατικός Προϊστάμενος μας για πολλά χρόνια. Γεννήθηκε και μεγάλωσε στην Κωνσταντινούπολη, και ήταν μέλος της τελευταίας γενιάς, της κάποτε ακμαίας και τώρα πλέον φθίνουσας Ελληνικής κοινότητας εκεί. Η θητεία του εδώ μπορεί να μην ήταν πάντοτε "ομαλή" αλλά δεν μπορεί κανείς να αρνηθεί ότι ήταν άνθρωπος πολύ μορφωμένος, πολύγλωσσος, εύγλωττος ομιλητής και ένας αληθινός φύλακας των παλαιών Ορθοδόξων λειτουργικών παραδόσεων, μερικές από αυτές εισήγαγε στην εκκλησία μας. Όλοι μας προσευχόμαστε για την ανάπαυση της ψυχής του εν ειρήνη. Τα μωσαϊκά στη κυρία είσοδο της Εκκλησίας μας έχουν πλέον ολοκληρωθεί, δίνοντας στην Εκκλησία μας μία εντελώς νέα μορφή παραδοσιακής Ορθόδοξης Εκκλησίας. Αυτό ολοκληρώνει το έργο του υπόστεγου, το οποίο κατασκευάστηκε στη μνήμη του Κώστα και της Δήμητρας Γκούση. Τις ευχαριστίες και την ευγνωμοσύνη μας και πάλι στην Κωνσταντίνα την κόρη τους, και στον σύζυγό της Μάικ για την υποδειγματική τους γενναιοδωρία για την ωραία αυτή διακόσμηση του υπόστεγου. Ο ναός εσωτερικά βάφτηκε ξανά, οι εικόνες, τα υαλογραφήματα στα παράθυρα και οι πολυέλαιοι καθαρίστηκαν και γυαλίστηκαν. Αυτή η ανανεωση παρέχει μια αισθητική και όμορφη εμφάνιση στον εσωτερικό χώρο της Εκκλησίας μας, που ελπίζω να σας εμπνέει και να σας ανυψώνει όταν εκκλησιάζεστε. Ένα από τα μεγάλα έργα στη κοινότητα μας είναι η ανακαίνιση της κουζίνας, οι οποία ήδη έχει αρχίσει. Το έργο ανάλαβε ο Αντιπρόεδρος Γιώργος Ζαλοκώστας, και την "επιτήρηση" ο Γιώργος Αθανασόπουλος που είναι έμπειρο μέλος του Διοικητικού Συμβουλίου. Ορισμένοι από εσάς δεν εγκρίνετε αυτό το έργο. Βασικά η συζήτηση ήταν να περιμένουμε να γίνει κάποιος άλλος συνδυασμός για ένα μεγαλύτερο έργο, όπως η μετακόμιση του γραφείου, της αναμνηστικής αίθουσας και η παλιά αίθουσα διοικητικού συμβουλίου που είναι τώρα το γραφείο του ιερέα έτσι ώστε η κουζίνα θα ήταν δίπλα στο εξωτερικό τοίχωμα. Νομίζω ότι αυτό το σχέδιο θα είχε μεγάλο όφελος. Ωστόσο, πρόκειται για ένα πολύ μεγάλο και πολύ δαπανηρό σχέδιο. Το Διοικητικό Συμβούλιο αποφάσισε και ενέκρινε η γενική συνέλευση, ότι δεν είμαστε σε θέση αυτή τη στιγμή να χρηματοδοτήσουμε ένα τέτοιο μεγάλο σχέδιο. Σκεπτόμενοι το μέλλον, δεν μπορούμε να αναλάβουμε ένα τέτοιου μεγέθους έργο για πολλά χρόνια, διότι πρέπει πρώτα να επιστρέψουμε, σε ορισμένους από εσάς, τα χρήματα που δανειστήκαμε για την αγορά της οικίας στην 7 Kroeger Lane. Έτσι, αντί να μείνουμε με την παλαιά κουζίνα, με το περιορισμένο χώρο, με τον παλιό ελαττωματικό εξοπλισμό και με το δύσκολα να διατηρηθεί καθαρό περιβάλλον, επιλέξαμε να επεκτείνουμε και να εκσυγχρονίσουμε την τωρινή κουζίνα. Περίπου το ήμισυ του προϋπολογισμού θα διατεθεί για την αγορά νέου εξοπλισμού, που βεβαίως θα είναι μια μακροπρόθεσμη επένδυση η οποία θα εξακολουθεί να είναι χρήσιμη εάν μελλοντικά γίνει μετασχηματισμός του σχεδίου. Με λύπη σας ενημερώνω, ότι άλλο ένα μεγάλο έργο, η ανακαίνιση του υπογείου σε ένα σύγχρονο κέντρο νεολαίας, το οποίο χρηματοδοτήθηκε από τον όμιλο FOCUS, δεν προχωρεί κατάλληλα. Ελπίζαμε ότι μέχρι την 1 η Σεπτεμβρίου θα είχε ολοκληρωθεί αλλά, ο Μανώλης Δημητράκης, γενικός εργολάβος του έργου, έχει αναλάβει πολλά άλλα έργα και δεν έχει τη δυνατότητα να διαθέσει τα μέσα για την ολοκλήρωση του έργο αυτού. Ο προϋπολογιστικοί περιορισμοί δεν επιτρέπουν εναλλακτική λύση. Ας ελπίσουμε ότι ο Μανώλης θα καταφέρει να τελειώσει αυτό το έργο σύντομα. Ως μέλος του Διοικητικού Συμβουλίου και ως Πρόεδρος σας με απογοητεύει η έλλειψη συμμετοχής από πολλούς και κυρίως από τους νεότερους της Κοινότητας στους οποίους ανήκει το μέλλον! Προεδρεύω ένα κουρασμένο Διοικητικό Συμβούλιο και έναν πολύ περιορισμένο αριθμό εθελοντών που τελικά κάνουν όλη τη εργασία, όλο το χρόνο. Δεν ξέρω τι πρέπει να γίνει για να αλλάξει αυτό. Δέχομαι τις προτάσεις σας. Προσδοκώ να σας δω όλους στη Γενική Συνέλευση της Κοινότητάς μας την Κυριακή 14 Οκτωβρίου και στην Χοροεσπερίδα μας το Σάββατο 20 Οκτωβρίου. 11 September/October 2012 Page 11 STEWARDSHIP REQUIREMENTS Any person can give any amount for Stewardship. However, to be considered a member in good standing, to participate in the sacraments of Baptism or Wedding, and have one vote in the General Assembly, the following minimums must be met: $350 for single adult or husband and wife (age 18-64): one vote (if both the husband and wife pay $350 ($700 total), both can vote) STEWARDSHIP PARTNERS FOR SUCCESS AND GROWTH A wise man one said, Service is the rent we pay, for the space we occupy while we are here. The same analogy can be compared to our Stewardship and our Fund-raising. We have to earn our keep and then we have to manage our time and our efforts in that regard. To be a good Steward is not just giving, but also managing what we have been given. When you think of our St. George, it is safe to say God has given us a strong and vibrant community that takes care of all of us, Stewards and non-stewards alike. When it comes to service or fulfillment of our religious and spiritual needs, there is no distinction between Stewards and non- Stewards. In a collective nutshell, St. George accomplishes its Stewardship towards its parishioners who make up this community. With a strong fertile foundation on which to build, we can all feel safe and secure knowing that no matter what, St. George will be there for us. Or can we? Is it safe to assume, because we belong to a parish that has been in existence since 1916, that we can take for granted our Stewardship roles and our obligations and responsibilities? If service is the rent we pay, then dear faithful, we have a long way to go before we can even come close to our goal. As you can see in our Voice, the number of Stewards and families who are participating in our Stewardship Program is relatively small to the number of Orthodox Christians who are living in this area, including our young people living on their own or with their parents, who have not made a Stewardship commitment to St. George. Our Stewardship roster is staying the same without any decrease, thanks to God, but with a relatively small increase. Dear faithful, to feel safe for the future and for the future of our parish here, we need to evaluate our Stewardship commitment from this point forward. It is time now to think of voluntarily increasing our commitment so that our parish and Church may keep up with the increase in the cost of living. Just as there are increases in your utilities etc. in your daily lives, so too our St. George is facing and experiencing those increases. That is why it is vitally important for all of us, young and old, to participate immediately so that the future can truly be secure for us here in Piscataway. Rev. Fr. Μας δόθηκε μια κοινότητα με γερά θεμέλια πάνω στα οποία δυνάμεθα να οικοδομήσουμε και να νοιώσουμε ασφαλείς, γνωρίζοντας πως ο Άγιος Γεώργιος, θα είναι πάντοτε παρόν για ν ανταποκρίνεται στις πνευματικές και θρησκευτικές ανάγκες των μελών και μη μελών. Η μήπως λανθάνουμε; Είναι ασφαλές να υπολογίζουμε στην ύπαρξη της εκκλησίας και εις το απώτερο μέλλον, μόνο και μόνο επειδή συνεχίζει να υπάρχει από το 1916; Αν η «διακονία» είναι το νοίκι, τότε αγαπητοί πιστοί, έχουμε μεγάλο δρόμο να διανύσουμε ώσπου να φθάσουμε στον τελικό μας σκοπό. Όπως βλέπετε από τις εγκυκλίους μας, τα μέλη που συμβάλλουν με την εκούσια εισφορά τους είναι λίγα εν συγκρίσει με τις Ορθόδοξες οικογένειες που ζουν στην περιοχή. Επιπλέον, θα πρέπει να πείσουμε και τους νέους, είτε ζουν με τους γονείς τους είτε μόνοι, και εργάζονται, που δεν έχουν γίνει ενεργά μέλη του Αγίου Γεωργίου. Ο αριθμός των μελών δεν έχει μειωθεί, δόξα τω Θεώ, αλλά και η αύξηση είναι μηδαμινή. Αγαπητοί πιστοί, για να αισθανθούμε ασφαλείς και σίγουροι για το μέλλον της εκκλησίας μας, θα πρέπει να εξετάσουμε την οικονομική μας συνεισφορά από εδώ και μπρος. Έφθασε η στιγμή να αναθεωρήσουμε το ποσό της εισφοράς μας και να το αυξήσουμε όσο το δυνατό περισσότερο, ώστε η εκκλησία μας να μπορέσει να ανταποκριθεί στις οικονομικές πιέσεις του πληθωρισμού που όλο και αυξάνονται. Όπως οι τιμές των πάντων έχουν αυξηθεί στη προσωπική μας ζωή, το ίδιο συμβαίνει και με την εκκλησία. Είναι πολύ σημαντικό να φροντίσουμε όλοι μας, νέοι και ηλικιωμένοι, να γίνουμε μέλη της εκκλησίας μας και να την ενισχύσουμε οικονομικά. 12 Page 12 September/October 2012 LADIES PHILOPTOCHOS SOCIETY ST. BARBARA We hope that everyone in our St. George community had an enjoyable summer. We finalized our summer activities with a successful June luncheon, hosting the coffee hour following the 40-day memorial for our late Very Reverend Father Alexander Kile, as well as hosting the coffee hour for the month of August. Now we re all ready to begin our new ecclesiastical year. With that in mind, we invite all the ladies of our community to become members of our Ladies Philoptochos Society St. Barbara. Come, join us and participate in a busy and exciting year. The following listing summarizes our schedule of activities for the remainder of the year 2012: Cooking for the Homeless and Warming of America throughout the year. Baby blankets will be sewn in October. Visitation to the shut-ins throughout the year and, in particular, prior to the holidays. Preparation (Nov. 12, 13) and sale (Nov. 17, 18) of Baklava and Spanakopita in November. Community Christmas Card preparation, assembling and mailing beginning in October. Celebrating our patron saint, St. Barbara s holiday with a liturgy and artoklasia, December 2, St. Barbara s Luncheon, December 9, Sale of Christmas Bread and Vasilopites on December 23. Fulfilling all our National and Metropolis Philoptochos obligations. Our meetings are scheduled to take place at 11:00 a.m. on the last Saturday of the month unless noted differently because of a holiday or because of football parking when we do not have access to our parking lot. News from the AHEPA Family Supreme Convention in Las Vegas, NV is that our own Elena Georgopoulos, daughter of Evie and Panos Georgopoulos, was awarded one of the National DOP Scholarships. Congratulations and best wishes, Elena!! Of special interest in education is our FOUNDERS SCHOLARSHIP FOUNDATION. We anticipate raising enough monies this year to fund a substantial scholarship to be awarded to our St. George youth. Our fund-raising activities this fall will include selling our beautiful Christmas wreaths and center pieces, as well as introducing a new Christmas tree decoration. 14 Page 14 September/October 2012 G.O.Y.A. GREEK ORTHODOX YOUTH ASSOCIATION On Saturday, June 16 th, the annual Greek Heritage Night, honoring the Greek Children s Fund, took place at Citifield. A group of our GOYAns represented our Greek pride by dancing on the field and later, watching the Mets take on an opposing team. T h a t f o l l o w i n g Thursday, Friday, and Saturday (June 21-23), several of our GOYAns, along with a group of Trenton Church s GOYA, traveled to Garrison, NY for the fourth time and gave some extra hands in the scorching heat, wherever St. Basil s Academy needed them. Helping out at St. Basil s Academy is truly a great opportunity to give back to the Greek community, but it teaches us a lesson of how it is better to give than to receive, and how spending time with the kids at the academy is the biggest gift anyone could ask for. We are very proud of all the work our youth accomplished and look forward to visiting St. Basil s again next year! Now, we are starting our year off with our first GOYA meeting on Sunday, September 9 th, 2012, after church services, Artoklasia, and the Installation of our new Officers. We want to welcome old and new GOYA members as we are looking forward to yet another great, fun-filled year. The first meeting will consist of registration and sign-ups for Mr. & Miss GOYA, Gyro Sale Volunteers, as well as the annual Breast Cancer-Walk for the Cure. We will also be talking about our junior/senior boys basketball practices, girls volleyball practices, and the GOYA s dance practices. On September 16 th, we will be celebrating Holy Cross day at Asbury Park, and, like every year, four GOYAns from each church dive for the cross once church services are completed. Evangelia Makropoulos, George Stavrianidis, Jason Stavrianidis, and Nicolette Polos, will be representing St. George. We wish all four of our GOYAns Good Luck! Just to note: September 23 rd will be our first Gyro sale! Our GOYAns will be helping with cooking, preparing, and selling Gyros as a fundraiser for our many events this upcoming year. This not only helps with our funds, but also being able to work with one another as a team. We would like to thank everyone at St. George for always supporting us by buying our Gyros! This year the Kick-off dance will be held at Asbury Park s church on September 28 th. The Kick-off dance is an event enjoyed by all GOYA members, and is a great way for any new members from all churches to get together and meet one another. The date for this year s Walk for the Cure at Six Flags is Sunday, September 30 th. For the past few years our church has been represented by a growing group of adults, GOYAns, and children showing their support in the fight against breast cancer. Donate or sign up to join the church team and show YOUR support against breast cancer. On October 7 th, the Mr. and Miss Goya Pageant will be held at the Pines Manor. Dionisios Bourodimos and Zoe Makropoulos will represent St. George Piscataway. The money collected at this event goes to the GOYA Scholarship Fund that Senior GOYAns are awarded at the end of every year. Good Luck to all the contestants! The Parent Teacher Organization (PTO) hopes you will be active in the community. The PTO has many activities planned for this year (see attached calendar). We encourage you to become involved in as many of these activities as possible. We have fun together and the students have enjoyable, meaningful experiences as a result of your involvement. A description of the various PTO jobs needing volunteers, along with a sign-up form, is attached on the membership form. You will be able to volunteer for any of these jobs or committees by completing the form and returning it to school with your child. In addition, the PTO will be meeting at the school on the last Tuesday of every month at 6:30 pm ( s will go out with date, location, and time). We invite you to attend. The schools and the PTO will benefit from hearing your ideas, and you will be better informed about all of the budget. As with volunteering your time, we ask that you participate in as many fundraisers as possible, but you should not feel obligated to participate in all of them. (The calendar provides a list of the fundraisers to choose from.) The PTO has planned a variety of fundraisers at different times throughout the year, recognizing that different families will feel more comfortable participating in certain events over others. With your help we are looking forward to the 2012/2013 school year being the best one yet. If you have any ideas, comments or suggestions, we want to hear from you. On behalf of Father Nicholas, the teachers and staff, we welcome all the children and their families back to our Religious Education program on the 9 th of September for the ecclesiastical year. Our graduation ceremony in June 2012, was very impressive and well-attended. We had 14 graduates from 9 th grade; Kristina Alphas, Sophia Chiotis, Dimitri Demos, George Exarchakis, Amalia Jennings, Joanna Kantilierakis, Eleni Kontos, Ionana Kontos, Konstantine Lyssikatos, Evangelia Makropoulos, Nicholas Preite, Hope Sirimis, Andreas Thanos and Karissa Zubulake. We congratulate you on this outstanding accomplishment and we know that God will always be with you in all your future endeavors. Joanna Kantilierakis, Dimitri Demos and Evangelia Makropoulos were presented with the Helene Arianas Pappas Award for Excellence, an award that is given to a 9 th grade student (s) who excelled in our catechism program. We are so proud to inform you that most of these students will return to our program in September either as a Teacher s Aide or as part of our Teen Rap program. We have an exciting program scheduled for this year that will provide a solid foundation of our Greek Orthodox faith and of leading a true Christian life. As always, our goal is to improve upon the past; details of upcoming changes, which include curricula updates, will be communicated to the parents of our students by early-september. We are very fortunate to have many generous donations throughout the year. We would like to thank James Karamarkos for his generous contribution to our library of a number of books of our Orthodox faith, in memory of his parents Vasilios and Eleni. These books have been recommended by Holy Cross Theological Seminary. We encourage all parents to please bring your children to us each Sunday. Each lesson of a given week builds on that of the previous week, and thus the importance of your childrens presence must be noted. The set curriculum, the hymnology, the participation in the Divine Liturgy and the many projects carried out throughout the year, under the leadership and spiritual guidance of Father Nicholas, provide a complete picture of our program. Σκοπός του προγράμματος ήταν και σαφώς συνεχίζει να είναι ι η πρώτη επαφή των παιδιών 4 και 5 χρονών με την ελληνική γλώσσα και τα ήθη και έθιμα του τόπου μας. Μέσα από ένα καλά οργανωμένο πρόγραμμα δραστηριοτήτων ζωγραφικής, τραγουδιού και ομαδικού παιχνιδιού, καθώς και μέσα από ένα πολύ καλά μελετημένο και οργανωμένο οπτικοακουστικό υλικό, τα παιδιά μας εξοικειώνονται με τον ελληνικό τρόπο γραφής και ομιλίας. Με το πέρασμα του χρόνου ενθαρρύνονται στο να εκφράζουν σκέψεις και συναισθήματα χρησιμοποιώντας ελληνικές λέξεις στην αρχή, και αργότερα μικρές προτάσεις αλλά και μαθαίνουν να σχηματίζουν τα ελληνικά γράμματα. The purpose of this program was, and still is, the initial introduction of our children (ages 4-5) with the Greek language, the customs and traditions of our homeland. This program is based on a very organized curriculum full of activities, like coloring, singing and team play that are reinforced by well-designed visual and audio stimulations. Our children get familiarized with Greek speech and start learning elementary Greek writing skills. As time progresses, their confidence in creating sentences and using Greek words improves, which leads in the formation of more complex phrases. To accomplish our goals, we create an environment full of joy, fun and games. We would finally like to emphasize how important our program is in establishing a solid foundation as our children progress to the higher levels of our Greek school. Α very successful and productive year has passed and we are looking forward to starting a new school year full of new young children ready to absorb Greek knowledge. Sincerely, Saint George Greek School PRIORITIES AND CHOICES My Dear Faithful, As we all know, September is the beginning of school and many other activities for our children. As parents, we encourage and push our children to be involved in extra-curriculum activities, because we think it will look good and help when they apply for college. Of course, we also feel it is good for them to experience a variety of things for their intellectual, physical and emotional growth. We all agree that being in sports, different activities, and having a job is good for our children. The problem arises when their sports, activities and jobs become more important than family, church and God. Our children, not knowing better, sometimes are faced (and as parents, so are we) to choose a sports program, an activity, or even a job, over church attendance or church functions (Sunday School etc.). OFTEN ΤΗΕ CHOICE IS ΝΟΤ GOD OR CHURCH. THIS SENDS THE WRONG MESSAGE ΤΟ OUR CHILDREN. As Orthodox parents, we must guide and teach our child what should be a priority in his/her life. Yes, they have to go to school; yes, they have to study and do their homework; yes, they have to make their practices (sports or instrument or whatever activity); yes, they have to go to work (if they are old enough). Now Ι ask you, do they have to go to church? Do they have to say their prayer before meals and bedtime? Do they have to go to Sunday School? Do they have to see pappou and yiayia? Sometimes, sports, activities and jobs do get in the way of the more important things: being with family, coming to church, receiving the Sacrament of Holy Communion, in general, being with our Orthodox brothers and sisters. Parents, please look for opportunities to show your children that God and family are first above everything else. Do it with words and actions. Fr. Nick

18 Page 18 September/October 2012 OUR FAITH Η ΘΡΗΣΚΕΙΑ ΜΑΣ FEAST DAY OF THE INDICTION, September 1 Beginning of the Orthodox Church Calendar September 1st is the first day of the Orthodox Ecclesiastical Year. It is called the beginning of the "Indiction". The word indiction is Latin meaning "impose" (to make someone to do something). It was first applied in imposing taxes in Egypt. The Roman Emperor Diocletian extended the system of taxing conquered people to the whole Roman Empire. The first official worldwide indiction originated with Emperor Constantine in 312 A.D. when he saw a miraculous vision of the "sign of the Cross" in the skies, The Church chose this day to begin its calendar year for various reasons. 1. Before the Julian calendar, the Romans began their year on September first. 2. According to Holy Tradition, it was on September 1st that our Blessed Lord first entered the Jewish Synagogue (Luke 4) to preach his mission to men. Jesus quoted from the 61st chapter of the book of Isaiah: "The spirit of the Lord is upon me because the Lord has anointed me to preach good tidings unto the meek. He has sent me to bind up the broken hearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives and the openings of the prison to them that are bound. To proclaim the acceptable year of the Lord and the day of vengeance of our God, to comfort all that mourn." 3. Tradition also tells us that it was during the month of September that the Hebrews finally entered the Promised Land. 4. It has always been accepted within the church community that the month of September was the time to gather all fruits of the summer months and prepare for the beginning of the winter months ahead. At the start of the new year, hymnographers also prepared beautiful hymns to be chanted during Church services. The hymns were offered to the Almighty God so that we might receive His Divine blessing throughout the coming year. ΝΑΤIVΙΤΥ OF ΤΗΕ THEOTOKOS, September 8 The Church regards the birthday of Mary, the Mother of Jesus Christ, with special veneration because she was made the instrument whereby our Blessed Lord became Man. According to Holy Tradition, Joachim and Anna had been married for twenty years and they had no children. One year, as they went to Jerusalem to celebrate a religious feast day in the Temple, they each had a separate vision of an angel. The angel announced to them the forthcoming birth of a daughter whom they should vow to the service of the Lord. In due time, the prophecy came to pass and they called their daughter Mary, in accordance with the angel s instructions. The Church honors Saints Joachim and Anna on September 9th. The traditional story of the birth of Mary is preserved for us in other ancient writings, especially in two books known as "The Gospel of the Birth of Mary" and "The Proevangelion of St. James." The Church service for the feast day of the Nativity of the Theotokos is based upon the hymns and writings taken from these two ancient works. ΕΝΑΡΞΗ ΤΟΥ ΕΚΚΛΗΣΙΑΣΤΙΚΟΥ ΕΤΟΥΣ, 1 Σεπτεμβρίου Η 1η Σεπτεμβρίου ονομάζεται η «Αρχή της Επιβολής». Η λέξη επιβολή σημαίνει επιβάλλουμε σε κάποιον να κάνει κάτι. Κατ' αρχήν οι Αιγύπτιοι επέβαλαν φορολογία. Στην συνέχεια ο Ρωμαίος Αυτοκράτορας Διοκλητιανός επέβαλε το σύστημα της φορολογίας σε όλους του λαούς της επικράτειάς του. Η πρώτη επίσημη παγκόσμια επιβολή άρχισε με το όραμα του Αυτοκράτορα Κωνσταντίνου το 312 μ.χ όταν είδε τo σημείο του Σταυρού στον ουρανό. Η Εκκλησία όρισε αυτήν την ημέρα ως αρχή του έτους για διαφόρους λόγους. 1. Σύμφωνα με το Ιουλιανό Ημερολόγιο, οι Ρωμαίοι είχαν ως αρχή του έτους την 1η Σεπτεμβρίου. 2. Σύμφωνα με την παράδοση, την 1η Σεπτεμβρίου ο Ιησούς εισήλθε στην συναγωγή για πρώτη φορά (Λουκά 4), για να διδάξει την Αποστολή Του στους; ανθρώπους. Ο Ιησούς; επανέλαβε τα λόγια του Προφήτου Ησαΐα «Το Άγιο Πνεύμα του Θεού είναι επάνω μου γιατί ο Θεός με έχρισε να φέρω καινούριες ελπίδες,στους πράους, να ανακουφίσω τις πονεμένες καρδιές, να ανακηρύξω την ελευθερία των σκλάβων και αποδέσμευση αυτών. Και κατά την ημέρα τη; κρίσεως να δώσω την ανακούφιση στους θλιμμένους». 3. Η Παράδοση μας λέγει επίσης, ότι κατά τον μήνα Σεπτέμβριο οι Εβραίοι εισήλθαν στην υποσχεθείσα Γη. 4. Επί πλέον, τον Σεπτέμβριο μήνα οι Χριστιανοί συνηθίζουν να μαζεύουν όλους τους καρπούς, του καλοκαιριού και να τους αποθηκεύουν, προετοιμαζόμενοι έτσι για την περίοδο του Χειμώνα. Οι υμνογράφοι έγραψαν ωραίους ύμνου; προς τον Θεό για να ψέλνονται στις τελετές της Εκκλησίας, παρακαλώντας Τον να μας δώσει την Αγία Του ευλογία για το ερχόμενο έτος. ΤΑ ΓΕΝΕΘΛIΑ ΤΗΣ ΘΕΟΤΟΚΟΥ, 8 Σεπτεμβρίου Η Εκκλησία μας θεωρεί τα Γενέθλια της Παναγίας μας πάρα πολύ αξιοσέβαστα, διότι αυτή έγινε το μέσον δια του οποίου εγεννήθη ο Κύριος και έγινε Άνθρωπος. Σύμφωνα με την Ιερά Παράδοση, ο Ιωακείμ και η Άννα ήταν νυμφευμένοι είκοσι χρόνια και δεν είχαν αποκτήσει παιδί. Πήγαν λοιπόν κάποτε στην Ιερουσαλήμ για να εορτάσουν στον ναό κάποια θρησκευτική εορτή. Εκεί και οι δύο, ο καθένας χωριστά, είχαν ένα όραμα ενός αγγέλου, ο οποίος τους ανήγγειλε την γέννηση μια κόρης, την οποία έπρεπε να αφιερώσουν στον Θεό. Και όντως εγεννήθη κόρη, την οποία ονόμασαν Μαρία, σύμφωνα με τις οδηγίες του αγγέλου. Την μνήμη των Αγίων Ιωακείμ και Άννας η Εκκλησία μας εορτάζει στις 9 Σεπτεμβρίου. Η Παράδοση της; γεννήσεως της Παναγίας είναι γραμμένη στα ιερά βιβλία, «Ευαγγέλιο της Γεννήσεως της Παναγίας» και «Προ Ευαγγέλιο του Αγίου Ιακώβου». 19 September/October 2012 Page 19 OUR FAITH Η ΘΡΗΣΚΕΙΑ ΜΑΣ ELEVATION OF THE HOLY CROSS, September 14 Every September 14th, Orthodoxy celebrates two events concerning the Cross on which Christ was crucified: The Finding of the Cross in 325 AD by St. Helen, the mother of the Emperor Constantine, and the Recapture of the Cross in 628 AD from the Persians who had stolen it. This celebration is named, "The Elevation of the Holy Cross" due to the fact that after its recovery and return to Jerusalem, the Cross had to be lifted high by Patriarch Makarios, so that the throngs of people might see it and worship it. The priest performs a special service on this feast day. The Cross of Blessing is placed in a tray filled with flowers and basil and three candles. The flowers remind us of the beauty of our Lord and the grace of the Cross, and tradition tells us that basil was growing on the ground which covered the buried Cross. The three candles symbolize the divine light of the Holy Trinity. Hymns and petitions for grace and health are offered by the priest who imitates the first elevation of the Cross with slow descending and ascending movements. At the conclusion, the blessed flowers, along with the basil are distributed to the faithful. In His Service, Fr. Nick ΥΨΩΣIΣ TOY ΤΙΜΙΟΥ ΣΤΑΥΡΟΥ, 14 Σεπτεμβρίου Κάθε 14 Σεπτεμβρίου η Ορθοδοξία εορτάζει την εύρεση του Τιμίου Σταυρού, που έγινε το 325 μ.χ. από την Αγία Ελένη, μητέρα του Αυτοκράτορα Κωνσταντίνου, και την επανάκτηση του Σταυρού το 628 μ.χ, από τους Πέρσες, οι οποίοι τον είχαν κλέψει. Ο εορτασμός αυτός ονομάζεται «Ύψωσις του Τιμίου Σταυρού». Πήρε αυτό το όνομα επειδή μετά την επανάκτηση και επιστροφή εις την Ιερουσαλήμ, ο Σταυρός υψώθηκε από του Πατριάρχου ώστε τα πλήθη του κόσμου να μπορούν να τον δουν και να τον προσκυνήσουν. Αυτή την ημέρα ο ιερέας τοποθετεί τον Σταυρό σε ένα δίσκο γεμάτο άνθη και βασιλικό, καθώς και τρία κεριά. Τα άνθη θυμίζουν την ομορφιά του Κυρίου και την χάρη Του Τιμίου Σταυρού. Ο βασιλικός, σύμφωνα με την παράδοση, ήταν φυτρωμένος στο χώμα το οποίο σκέπαζε τον θαμμένο Σταυρό. Τα τρία κεριά συμβολίζουν τον Τριαδικό Θεό! Κατά την Ύψωση του Σταυρού ύμνοι και προσευχές προσφέρονται από τον ιερέα για χάρη και υγεία. Στο τέλος της τελετής, τα άνθη και ο βασιλικός μοιράζονται στους πιστούς, Εις το όνομα του Χριστού, Πατήρ Νικόλαος ST. ROMANOS, October 1 On October 1 st the Church honors one of the best known hymnologists, St. Romanos, the Melodist. He was born in Syria in the 5 th Century, and entered the service of the Lord as a deacon in Beirut. He was later assigned to the Church of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Constantinople. St. Romanos soon became recognized for his wonderful talent of composing hymns, although he was not originally blessed with a melodious voice. The hymns he wrote expressed the great truths and dogmas of Orthodoxy, and they brought him much acclaim. However, he longed to be able to praise God with his own voice. Tradition tells us that on the eve of the Nativity of our Lord, St. Romanos fell into a deep sleep. The Blessed Theotokos appeared to him in a vision and told him not to despair. She blessed him with her right hand, and in her left hand she held a short scroll which she gave to St. Romanos. He immediately awoke from his dream. He just stood there and cried, What a beautiful vision! St. Romanos, overcome with joy, went up into the pulpit of the Church of the Blessed Virgin Mary that very same evening and began to chant a hymn which the Church now calls the Kontakion (an abbreviated hymn). St. Romanos voice was sweet and melodious and the harmonious chant echoed throughout the Church grounds. Hundreds of monks left their cells which surrounded the Church and came to hear this most beautiful of hymns. The faithful rejoiced, not only at this miracle, but also at the words of the new hymn, the Kontakion of the Nativity: The Virgin gives birth today to the Highest being, and the earth provides the inaccessible One with a cave. The angels with the shepherds glorify Him. The wise men journey with a star, because for our sake is born a little Child, the pre-eternal God. (I Parthenos Simeron) St. Romanos composed over 1000 beautiful hymns, of which at least 100 are found in the many worship services of our Faith. For years he sang and chanted beautiful hymns for the glory of God. Thousands of the faithful came each day to hear his wonderful voice. St. Romanos is now referred to as The Melodious. Thus, he was given the title St. Romanos, the Melodist. He died a natural death on October 1 st, 510 AD. His final breath on this earth was spent chanting that first hymn he chanted, his beautiful and classic Christmas hymn. 20 Page 20 September/October 2012 NATIONAL CHURCH MUSIC SUNDAY OCTOBER 7, 2012 Each year, on the first Sunday in October (on or after the Feast of St. Romanos the Melodist, the patron saint of church musicians), parishes across the Archdiocese of America celebrate NATIONAL CHURCH MUSIC SUNDAY. This commemoration was inaugurated by His Eminence, Archbishop Iakovos of North and South America in 1982, and has been reaffirmed by His Eminence, Archbishop Demetrios of America. National Church Music Sunday is a day set aside particularly to honor the contributions of local choirs, psaltes, and music educators, who serve their churches through the hymnology of our Orthodox Church. In addition, it is a day when we recognize the work of the metropolitan choir federations as well as the National Forum of Greek Orthodox Church Musicians, who through their music ministry strive to enhance the development of church choirs, church musicians, and liturgical music at metropolitan and archdiocesan levels. On this National Church Music Sunday we honor our St. George choir members, director, psaltes, and Sunday School music educators for their service to the parish of St. George. We reaffirm our support of the Eastern Federation of Greek Orthodox Church Musicians (our metropolitan federation) and its activities. We also reaffirm our support of the National Forum of Greek Orthodox Church Musicians, which has resources and materials available to assist local parishes and choirs in developing their music ministry. Katina Kehayas SOME QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS ABOUT ORTHODOX HYMNS By Nancy Takis (The following is an excerpt from the National Forum of Greek Orthodox Church Musicians publication MUSICA) What are the hymns of the Orthodox Church? This is not a simple question to answer. Our church calendar is set up that we many remember and honor saints and events in the life of the Church daily. We can look at the calendar and see at a glance which persons or events are celebrated for every day of the year. Some days have many people or events that we commemorate, and other days have only one major person or event to be celebrated. But the fact is that every day of the year has designated people or events to commemorate, and a Liturgy celebrated on any day has a whole set of hymns relating to those people or events, as well as a Vesper service and an Orthros service. In addition, there are the hymns sung at special services such as complines, baptisms, weddings, and memorials. During the Divine Liturgy itself, hymns are integral from beginning to end. There is not a lot of down time for Orthodox musicians during the services. While Protestant churches may have three or four congregational sing-alongs and perhaps an anthem somewhere in the services, their choirs generally do not have the amount of singing that our choirs do. On the other hand, unlike the Divine Liturgy, a Protestant service is often set up at the discretion of the pastor and the choir director or organist, and while they do not follow a liturgical text, they often must learn all new hymns and anthems for each Sunday. Our Liturgy, however, is very structured, and while we may use different melodic lines, the text of the service and the hymns we sing are the same in every Orthodox church in the world on any given Sunday. We cannot arbitrarily decide which hymns we want to include in a service, or which Scripture readings to follow. It is all set out for us. Some Sundays are fairly ordinary and not much is added. Other Sundays have extra hymns at the Small Entrance, and on major feast days, we many several substitutions. We rarely have omissions. The Orthodox Church has many categories of hymns and this article cannot even begin to list all of them. Most of us are familiar with the hymns and responses of the Divine Liturgy. Some of these are the same every Sunday. Starting with the antiphons Tes Presvies and Soson Imas. There are other hymns of the Liturgy that usually do not change, such as Se Imnoumen, Aghios, Aghios, Aghios, Is Aghios, Is Kyrios, Eidhomen to Fos, and Ii to Onoma. Cherubic hymns are sung at the Great Entrance. Other hymns of the Liturgy may change depending on the season or particular feast. For example, the regular Trisaghion hymn is Aghios O Theos, but sometimes Ton Stavroon Sou or Osi Is Christon is substituted. Meghalinaria are hymns to the Theotokos. The regular Sunday meghalinarion is Axion Estin. Other meghalinaria include Epi Si Cheri and O Angelos Evoa. Koinonika, or Communion hymns, are taken from the Psalms except on a few occasions. The regular Sunday Communion hymn Enite ton Kyrion is from Psalm 148. The usual Communion Psalm for weekday liturgies is Eis Mnimosion from Psalm 112. The Christmas hymn Litrosin is from Psalm 111. The Communion hymn for Pascha is Soma Christou, which is not from a psalm, nor is Tou Dhipnou Sou. As we can see by the example of Osi Is Christon and the Communion hymns are scriptural in origin, coming from both the Old and New Testaments. 22 Page 22 September/October 2012 REFLECTIONS ON THE BIRTH OF THE MOTHER OF OUR LORD By Father Nicholas Pastrikos The Feast of the Nativity of our Most Holy Lady, the Theotokos and Ever Virgin Mary, is celebrated each year on September 8. The Feast commemorates the birth of the Mother of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. It is most appropriate that the Feast is the first major feast after the beginning of the Church's Liturgical Year of September 1. The proximity of the two events serves to emphasize that the birth of the Virgin Mary is the event that marks the beginning of God the Father's plan to send His Son, through the Incarnation, into the world to accomp1ish mankind's redemption. Just as the Church understands Christ's Incarnation as an event planned by God before all ages, it also recognizes the birth of the Theotokos as similarly preordained by God's divine providence. For this reason, just as the Church discerns the prophetic foretelling of the coming of Christ in the Old Testament, it also finds many direct and indirect suggestions of the Panagia in the Hebrew Scriptures. For instance, the burning bush and the Ark of the Covenant in Exodus, both of which held the glory of God and were not consumed by His presence, are perceived by the Church as pointing to the Virgin Mary whose womb held the eternal divine Son of God. And, of course, the prophet Isaiah s virgin who would conceive and bear a son is understood as an unmistakable allusion to the Panagia. Because of these references and others to the Virgin Mary in the Old Testament, the Church understands her to be the last and greatest of the saints of Old Covenant Israel and the first and greatest saint of the true and New Israel of God, the Church. She is considered the living historical link between the promises of God to the Hebrew people to send them a Savior, and the fulfillment of that promise. As such, she is, by being the living vessel through which the eternal World of God assumed flesh and entered the world, the divinely decreed instrument by which heaven, earth, God and man are eternally united and all creation is redeemed. Because of her role in the Incarnation, Orthodox Christians celebrate with great joy the birth of the Theotokos (God-Bearer, Mother of God) as she was proclaimed by the Third Ecumenical Council. Although she is held in the highest esteem, she is honored not so much for herself, praiseworthy as that may be, but precisely because she is the Mother of the Lord. By highly respecting and reverencing the Virgin Mary, the Fathers of the Church understood that they were advancing and preserving a proper understanding of Christ as the fully divine only begotten Son of God. Accurately recognizing Christ's ful1 divinity demands that the Virgin Mary be honored and venerated. The Church's grasp of the Theotokos' role in God's plan of salvation is made quite clear in the hymns sung during the Feast of Virgin Mary's Nativity. She is called, among other titles, "Temple and Throne of God" and "Bridge of Life". The hymns and texts of the services celebrating the Feast are drawn (Continued on page 30) AHEPA, MONROE CHAPTER #75 45th Annual Graduates Reception On June 3, 2012, AHEPA Monroe Chapter #75 held its 45th Annual Graduates Reception honoring the graduating students of the St. George Greek Orthodox Community. The reception was held, as it has been for the last few years, in collaboration with the Daughters of Penelope, Tethys Chapter #229, and the St. George GOYA in a spirit of fun, congeniality and proud celebration of the quality and accomplishments of our youth. The highlight of the reception was, as every year, the announcement of the winners of the Scholarships that the Monroe Chapter #75 distributes to students with exceptional academic and community service credentials. The scholarship program was initiated in 2003, when Brother John Pilitsis launched it with a generous donation in honor of the memory of our late brother Milton Marikakis. Brother Milton's lifelong commitment, dedication, passion and contributions to the advancement of the education of young Greek Americans were exemplary. Brother Pilitsis' trend-setting example has since been emulated by others leading to the establishment and granting of four annual scholarships donated by: 1) Sister Kathryn Achaves, in memory of her late husband Brother Stephen Achaves, 2) Brother Christos Katsifis in memory of his wife Georgia, a beloved Greek School teacher, and 3) Brother John Mellos, who always supports youth and Church causes. With these funds, the Monroe Chapter #75 grants at least $5,000 in scholarships annually. The Milton Marikakis scholarship in the amount of $2,500 was won by William Mavrode. The Georgia Katsifis Scholarship in the amount of $1,000 was won by Andreas Savva, the John Mellos scholarship in the amount of $1,000 was won by Yiannis Frangos, and the Stephen Achaves scholarship in the amount of $500 was won by Miranda Sirimis. It is with great pride that the Chapter recognizes all graduating seniors and rewards the top four for their exceptional records.

23 September/October 2012 Page 23 ΣΚΕΨΕΙΣ ΓΙΑ ΤΗΝ ΓΕΝΝΗΣΗ ΤΗΣ ΜΗΤΕΡΑΣ ΤΟΥ ΚΥΡΙΟΥ Του Πατέρα Νικολάου Παστρικού Κάθε χρόνο, στις 8 Σεπτεμβρίου γιορτάζουμε το Γενέθλιον της Υπεραγίας Δεσποίνης ημών Θεοτόκου και Αειπαρθένου Μαρίας. Η εορτή τιμά την γέννηση της Μητέρας του Κυρίου και Σωτήρος μας, Ιησού Χριστού. Είναι χαρακτηριστικό το ότι η εορτή της γεννήσεως της Θεοτόκου είναι η πρώτη μεγάλη εορτή μετά την έναρξη του Λειτουργικού Έτους, την 1η Σεπτεμβρίου. Τα δύο αυτά γεγονότα είναι πολύ κοντά το ένα με το άλλο. Τούτο, για να τονιστεί ότι η γέννηση της Παρθένου Μαρίας σημειώνει την αρχή του σχεδίου του Θεού να στείλει τον Υιό Του στον κόσμο, με την ενανθρώπισή Του, για να επιτύχει την λύτρωση του ανθρώπινου γένους. Όπως η Εκκλησία εννοεί την ενανθρώπιση του Χριστού σαν ένα γεγονός προσχεδιασμένο από τον Θεό, με τον ίδιο τρόπο αναγνωρίζει την γέννηση της Θεοτόκου, σαν γεγονός, το ίδιο προσχεδιασμένο, από την Θεία Πρόνοια. Για τον ίδιο λόγο, η Εκκλησία, όχι μόνο διακρίνει την προφητεία του Ερχομού του Χριστού στην Παλαιά Διαθήκη, αλλά βρίσκει επίσης στις Εβραϊκές γραφές πολλές άμεσες και έμμεσες αναφορές στην Παναγία. Για παράδειγμα, η φλεγόμενη βάτος, και η Κιβωτός της Διαθήκης του Κυρίου, στην «Έξοδο», που δεν καταναλώθηκαν από την παρουσία Του, και που δείχνουν τη δόξα του Θεού, θεωρούνται από την Εκκλησία σαν γεγονότα που αναφέρονται στην Παναγία Μαρία, που κυοφόρησε την αιώνια θεότητα του Υιού του Θεού. Η προφητεία του Ησαΐα για την «Παρθένα», που θα συλλάβει και θα γεννήσει γιο, θεωρείται, αναμφισβήτητα, ότι υπαινίσσεται την Παναγία. Λόγω αυτών των αναφορών και άλλων για την Παναγία στην Παλαιά Διαθήκη, η Εκκλησία μας θεωρεί την Παναγία σαν την τελευταία και μεγαλύτερη των αγίων του Παλαιού Ισραήλ και σαν την πρώτη και μεγαλύτερη των αγίων του Νέου Ισραήλ του Θεού, της Εκκλησίας. Θεωρείται ο ζωντανός ιστορικός κρίκος ανάμεσα στην υπόσχεση του Θεού προς τον Εβραϊκό λαό, ότι θα τους στείλει τον Μεσσία, και την εκπλήρωση αυτής της υπόσχεσης, Είναι το ζωντανό σκεύος, μέσω του οποίου ο αιώνιος Λόγος του Θεού πήρε σάρκα και ήλθε στον κόσμο. Είναι το θείο εργαλείο, με το οποίο, ουρανός, γη, Θεός και άνθρωπος, είναι αιώνια συνδεδεμένα και χάρις στο οποίο, όλη η κτίση είναι λυτρωμένη. Λόγω του ρόλου της στην ενανθρώπιση του Χριστού, οι Ορθόδοξοι Χριστιανοί γιορτάζουν με μεγάλη χαρά το Γενέθλιον της Θεοτόκου (Θεόν-τεκούσα, Μητέρα του Θεού) όπως την ανακήρυξε η Τρίτη Οικουμενική Σύνοδος. Αν και χαίρεται μεγάλης εκτίμησης, τιμάται όχι τόσο για το άτομό της, όσο άξιον επαίνου κι αν είναι, αλλά επειδή είναι η Μητέρα του Κυρίου. Οι Πατέρες της Εκκλησίας μας, με τον μεγάλο σεβασμό και την λατρεία τους προς την Παναγία, κατάλαβαν ότι προωθούσαν και διατηρούσαν την ορθή αντίληψη ότι ο Ιησούς είναι ο Θείος και μοναδικός Υιός του Θεού. Η αναγνώριση της πλήρης θεότητας του Ιησού, απαιτεί τιμή και λατρεία της παρθένου Μαρίας. Η αντίληψη της Εκκλησίας για τον ρόλο της Θεοτόκου στο σχέδιο του Θεού για την λύτρωση των ανθρώπων, είναι καθαρή στους ύμνους που ψέλνονται την ημέρα του Γενεθλίου της Παρθένου Μαρίας. Ανάμεσα σε άλλους τίτλους που της δίδονται, καλείται «Το παλάτιον του μόνου Βασιλέως και θρόνος πύρινος του Παντοκράτορος» και «Γέφυρα, μετάγουσα εκ θανάτου πάντας προς ζωήν». Οι Ύμνοι και τα κείμενα των ακολουθιών, που τιμούν την εορτή, προέρχονται, κυρίως, από το βιβλίο του Ιακώβου, το πρώτο ευαγγέλιο, που γράφτηκε τον δεύτερο αιώνα. Το βιβλίο αυτό, που δεν περιλαμβάνεται στον «Κανόνα» της Εκκλησίας μας, μαζί με τις αναφορές του Ευαγγελίου για την Θεοτόκο, επηρέασαν πάρα πολύ την υψηλή θέση που έδωσε η Εκκλησία μας, από την αρχή της ίδρυσής της προς την Θεοτόκο. Το βιβλίο εξιστορεί την γέννησή Της, που ήταν θεϊκά προσχεδιασμένη, και αγγελικά αναγγελμένη στους ηλικιωμένους γονείς της, τον Ιωακείμ και την Άννα, τα θαυμαστά χρόνια της βρεφικής και παιδικής της ηλικίας, και την αφιέρωσή της στον Ναό. 'Όπως επισήμανε ο Επίσκοπος Κάλλιστος Ware, το γεγονός ότι η Εκκλησία δεν συμπεριλαμβάνει το πρώτο ευαγγέλιο του Ιακώβου στον «Κανόνα» των αγίων γραφών, είναι πιθανό να προέρχεται από την βαθιά πνευματική αλήθεια και πραγματικότητα με την οποία φανερώνεται η Γέννηση της Παναγίας, χωρίς να χρειάζεται κανείς να αναφερθεί σε ακριβή ιστορική αλήθεια. Η μεγάλη αλήθεια είναι ότι η Παρθένος Μαρία, από την γέννησή Της, αλλά και πριν από αυτήν, είχε εκλεγεί από τον Θεό να παίξει τον μοναδικό και απαράμιλλο ρόλο στο σχέδιο Του για την σωτηρία των ανθρώπων. Ο «καρπός της κοιλίας της» ήταν η εκπλήρωση της ένωσης Θεού και ανθρώπου. Μία ένωση που θα ελευθέρωνε την ανθρωπότητα από την κατάρα της αμαρτίας και του θανάτου, θα χάριζε στο ανθρώπινο γένος την αιώνια ζωή, θα λύτρωνε όλη την πλάση, και θα εγκαινίαζε την αιώνια βασιλεία του Θεού.

24 Page 24 September/October 2012 ΗΘΗ ΚΑΙ ΕΘΙΜΑ ΣΕΠΤΕΜΒΡΙΟΥ Σεπτέμβριος: είναι ο ένατος μήνας του έτους. Έχει 30 ημέρες και είναι ο πρώτος μήνας του φθινοπώρου. Το όνομά του το οφείλει στο λατινικό αριθμητικό septum (=επτά) και ήταν ο έβδομος μήνας του ρωμαϊκού ημερολογίου. Ονομαζόταν και «χρονογράφος» γιατί επικρατούσε η πίστη ότι κατά τον μήνα αυτό ο χάρος «γράφει» εκείνους που πρόκειται να πεθάνουν κατά τη διάρκεια του χρόνου. Οι αγροτικές εργασίες έδωσαν κι άλλες ονομασίες στο μήνα αυτό, όπως Σταυριάτης ή Σταυρίτης και Σταυρός, Πετμεζάς, Χινόπωρος, Ορτυκολόγος (λόγω του περάσματος των ορτυκιών που αποδημούν), Τρυγομηνάς ή Τρυγητής (λόγω τρύγου) κ.ά. Θεωρείται επίσης ο μήνας των μεγάλων παζαριών (εμποροπανηγύρεις). Του Αγίου Συμεών: Την 1η Σεπτεμβρίου είναι η γιορτή του Αγίου Συμεών του Στυλίτη. Οι έγκυες γυναίκες απείχαν από κάθε εργασία, για να μην γεννηθεί το παιδί τους με το σημάδι του Αγίου (Συμεών/σημαδεύω). Την ίδια μέρα γιορταζόταν η «Αρχιχρονιά», ένα έθιμο, κατάλοιπο των βυζαντινών χρόνων, καθώς οι βυζαντινοί τον είχαν ως πρώτο μήνα του επίσημου ημερολογίου. Στην Κω, το βράδυ της 31ης Αυγούστου αστρονομούν όπως λένε, δηλαδή αφήνουν κάτω από τ' άστρα ένα μεγάλο καρπούζι, με πολλά σπόρια, ένα ρόδι, μια σκελίδα σκόρδο, ένα κυδώνι, ένα φύλλο από τον «πλάτανο του Ιπποκράτη» κι ένα τσαμπί σταφύλι. Το πρωί της 1ης Σεπτεμβρίου της «Αρχιχρονιάς» γυναίκες και παιδιά σηκώνονται πριν βγει ο ήλιος και κατεβαίνουν στην παραλία παίρνοντας μαζί, τους «αστρονομημένους» αυτούς καρπούς που φύλαγαν για ένα χρόνο στο εικονοστάσι, τους πετούν στη θάλασσα και βουτάνε στο νερό τους καινούργιους. Βρέχουν το πρόσωπό τους, μαζεύουν θαλασσινό νερό από σαράντα κύματα και βότσαλα από την ακρογιαλιά. Στο δρόμο για το σπίτι σταματούν στον «πλάτανο» και αγκαλιάζουν τον κορμό του για να πάρουν τα χρόνια του και τη δύναμή του. Στο σπίτι πια κρεμούν την καινούρια «Αρχιχρονιά» στο εικονοστάσι, σα σύμβολο αφθονίας για την καινούρια χρονιά. Ρίχνουν λίγα βότσαλα στα μπαούλα, να μην τρώνε οι ποντικοί τα ρούχα, βάζουν λίγα στις τσέπες τους «για το καλό», σκορπίζουν μερικά στην αυλή και ραντίζουν το σπίτι με θαλασσινό νερό για την γλωσσοφαγιά. Στην Ρόδο, τη μέρα αυτή κρεμούν στο μεσιά - το μεσαίο χοντρό δοκάρι, που βαστάζει τη στέγη - τη δική τους «Αρχιχρονιά», ένα άσπρο σακουλάκι γεμάτο στάχυα και σιτάρι. Γύρω απ' αυτό δένουν μια αρμαθιά καρύδια, ένα κρεμμύδι, ένα σκόρδο, ένα κεχρί, καρπό βαμβακιού κι ένα τσαμπί σταφύλι. Αν δεν κάνουν την «Αρχιχρονιά», δεν αρχίζουν καμιά αγροτική εργασία. Την «Αρχιχρονιά» αυτή την ξεκρεμούν από το μεσιά την Η ΕΛΛΑΔΑ ΤΗΣ ΚΑΡΔΙΑΣ ΜΑΣ Ιστορίες, Ήθη και Έθιμα από την Πατρίδα Τη μεγάλη γιορτή της Ορθόδοξης Χριστιανικής μας Πίστης, γιορτάζουν οι κάτοικοι του χωριού Ανατολικό Κοζάνης τιμώντας τον ομώνυμο Ιερό Ναού της Κοινότητας, ΥΨΩΣΗ ΤΟΥ ΤΙΜΙΟΥ ΣΤΑΥΡΟΥ. Είναι η εικόνα, που οι ευσεβείς πρόσφυγες Μικρασιάτες μετέφεραν, από τις πατρογονικές εστίες των αλησμόνητων Πατρίδων, με την προσδοκία πως, γρήγορα θα επιστρέψουν στα σπίτια τους για να τις εναποθέσουν στον Ιερό χώρο τους, όμως, άλλαι μεν βουλαί ανθρώπων, άλλα δε.. όχλος (μεταφορικά= οι μεγάλοι των εποχών) κελεύει. Πηγή: Πρωτοχρονιά το πρωί. Τα καρύδια και το τσαμπί που γίνεται σταφίδα το τρώνε, ενώ το σιτάρι, το σκόρδο και το κρεμμύδι τα φυλάγουν για να τα ρίξουν μέσα στο σπόρο, όταν θα αρχίσουν τη σπορά. Το θεωρούν καλό ν' ανακατευτούν με το σπόρο οι καρποί της «Αρχιχρονιάς». Στην Ζωζόπολη Θράκης, οι κάτοικοι το πρωί της 1ης Σεπτεμβρίου, ράντιζαν ο καθένας με αγιασμό το σπίτι του, τα αμπέλια του και τα δίχτυα του, για να ευλογηθούν και να δώσουν πολλά σταφύλια και πολλά ψάρια αντίστοιχα. Στην Σκόπελο, η 1η Σεπτεμβρίου λέγεται και «Πρωτοτρυϊτιά» ή «Πρωτοτρυγιτιά»" επειδή από αυτή τη μέρα άρχιζε ο τρύγος. Θεωρείται η πρώτη μέρα του έτους. Έτσι η νοικοκυρά πολύ πρωί θα πάει στη βρύση μ' ένα κανάτι να το γεμίσει νερό και θα επιστρέψει σπίτι. Στην είσοδο του σπιτιού θα βάλει κάτω ένα ρόδι το οποίο και θα πατήσει. Με αυτό δηλώνεται το άνοιγμα προφανώς την καλοτυχίας με την πρώτη του νέου έτους. Πριν μπει στο σπίτι θα αναφωνήσει "Καλημέρα σπίτι". Στη συνέχεια εισέρχεται στο σπίτι με πρώτο το δεξί της πόδι και χύνει το νερό στις τέσσερις γωνίες του σπιτιού λέγοντας "Όπως τρέχει το νεράκι έτσι να τρέχει και το καλό στο σπίτι μας". Είναι δυνατόν επίσης να χύνεται και αγιασμός ο οποίος φυλάγεται όλο το χρόνο για τη στιγμή αυτή. Το «αμποδιακό» (έτσι λέγεται το έθιμο αυτό) στην περίπτωση αυτή μπορεί να γίνεται και με εικόνα χωρίς τη χρήση ροδιού. Πρόκειται μάλλον για εκχριστιανισμό του εθίμου. Ακόμη παραλείπεται πολλές φορές ο πηγαιμός μέχρι τη βρύση, αλλά αφήνεται από το προηγούμενο βράδυ έξω ένα κανάτι με νερό για τον "αμποδιακό" της επόμενης μέρας. Στην Κάλυμνο, οι κάτοικοι το πρωί της 1ης Σεπτεμβρίου, ραντίζουν ο καθένας με αγιασμό το σπίτι του, τα αμπέλια του και τα δίχτυα του, για να ευλογηθούν και να δώσουν πολλά σταφύλια και πολλά ψάρια αντίστοιχα. Στις Σπέτσες, αναβιώνει το έθιμο της Αρμάτας. Κάθε χρόνο στις Σπέτσες, το δεύτερο Σαββατοκύριακο του Σεπτεμβρίου είναι αφιερωμένο σε εορταστικές εκδηλώσεις που συνδυάζουν τον εορτασμό της Παναγίας της Αρμάτας (κοντά στον Φάρο) και της επετείου της ναυμαχίας της 8ης Σεπτεμβρίου Γίνεται αναπαράσταση της καύσεως της τουρκικής ναυαρχίδας. Οι Σπέτσες είναι μία από οκτώ ευρωπαϊκές πόλεις που μετέχουν στο Ευρωπαϊκό Δίκτυο Ιστορικών Αναπαραστάσεων. Του Σταυρού: Στις 14 Σεπτεμβρίου εορτάζεται Πανορθόδοξα η ύψωση του Τιμίου Σταυρού του Ιησού Χριστού. Ο Σταυρός θεωρείται ο φάρος που θα προσανατολίσει τη ζωή των πιστών τη νέα χρονιά ώστε να καταφέρουν να ανακαινίσουν την κοινωνία, τον κόσμο σύμφωνα με το όραμα της Βασιλείας του Θεού. Επειδή παράλληλα ο Σταυρός συμβολίζει το μαρτύριο και

25 September/October 2012 Page 25 το πένθος την ημέρα αυτή οι νοικοκυρές δεν βάζουν να μαγειρέψουν σπίτι φαγητό και νηστεύουν αυστηρά όλη τη διάρκεια της μέρας. Τρωνε μόνο σταφύλια της εποχής και λίγο ψωμί. Στις εκκλησίες μοιράζεται την ημέρα αυτή βασιλικός, που πηγάζει από την παράδοση ότι στο μέρος όπου βρέθηκε ο Τίμιος Σταυρός είχε φυτρώσει το αρωματικό αυτό φυτό, γι' αυτό και ο βασιλικός λέγεται και «σταυρολούλουδο». Με το βασιλικό αυτό από την εκκλησία και με αγιασμό της ημέρας ετοιμαζόταν το νέο προζύμι για όλη τη χρονιά. Μία γιορτή που αποτελούσε χρονικό σταθμό στις τοπικές αγροτικές & ποιμενικές εργασίες και λαμβανόταν σαν αρχή ή το τέρμα για τις σχετικές συμβάσεις. ΗΘΗ ΚΑΙ ΕΘΙΜΑ ΟΚΤΩΒΡΙΟΥ Οκτώβριος είναι ο δέκατος μήνας του Γρηγοριανού (νέου) ημερολογίου. Στο πρώιμο Ρωμαϊκό ημερολόγιο - όταν το έτος ξεκινούσε την 1η Μαρτίου - ήταν ο 8ος μήνας και εκεί οφείλει το όνομά του (από το λατινικό octo). Στο Αττικό ημερολόγιο ήταν ο τέταρτος μήνας και λεγόταν Πυανεψιών ή Πυανοψιών. Ονομαζόταν έτσι γιατί τότε γιορτάζονταν τα «Πυανέψια» ή «Πυανόψια» προς τιμήν του Απόλλωνα, της Σκιράδας Αθηνάς και αργότερα προς τιμή του Διονύσου. Με τις γιορτές αυτές ευχαριστούσαν τους θεούς για την καρποφορία και την ευφορία της γης. Ο Οκτώβριος είναι ο μήνας της φθινοπωρινής σποράς. Γι αυτό οι Ρωμαίοι του έδιναν και ένα άλλο όνομα, τον έλεγαν Sementilius, απ το semen που σημαίνει σπόρος. Ο λαός μας τον λέει ακόμη Σπαρτό, Αγιοδημήτρη ή Αγιοδημητριάτη απ τη γιορτή του Αγίου Δημητρίου, Γυμνωτή γιατί γυμνώνονται τα βουνά απ την παρουσία των τσοπάνηδων και των ζωντανών τους, Παχνιστή από την πάχνη που πέφτει στους αγρούς και Βροχάρη. Τα πρωτοβρόχια είναι η απαραίτητη προϋπόθεση για τη σπορά. Στην Κω, μόλις άρχιζαν να πέφτουν οι πρώτες σταγόνες, ξεχύνονταν στο δρόμο τα παιδιά, πιάνονταν χέρι χέρι και χορεύοντας τραγουδούσαν: Ψιχαλίζει, λίζει, λίζει, και το μάρμαρο ποτίζει, κι η νονά μου κοσκινίζει να μου κάνει το κουλούρι να το βάλω στο πιθάρι να το φάω το Γενάρη. Στην Κύπρο, μια παράδοση λέει για τα χρυσάνθεμα: Ο Οκτώβρης περιπλανιόταν στη γη και μοιρολογούσε για τα χαμένα λουλούδια και για τα φύλλα των δέντρων που πέφτανε στη γη, καθώς και για τις ζεστές ημέρες που χάνονταν και για τα σύννεφα που μαζεύονταν στον ουρανό. Τα χρυσάνθεμα τότε παρακάλεσαν τον Θεό να κάμει καλωσύνες γι αυτά και να τ αφήσει ν ανθίζουν όλον τον Οκτώβρη. Τ ακουσε ο Θεός και τα αφησε κοντά του, κι έτσι στην Κύπρο τα λένε Οκτωβρούδες. Στην Σάμο, τον Οκτώβριο βράζουν κουκιά, έθιμο πανάρχαιο όπου στις 7 Πυανεψιώνα (Οκτωβρίου), εορτή του Απόλλωνα, έβραζαν κουκκιά και άλλα όσπρια σε μια χύτρα (πανσπερμία, πολυσπόρια) προσφέροντάς τα σε κοινή συνεστίαση ευχόμενοι «καλή σπορά». Στις 18 Οκτωβρίου, του Αγίου Λουκά, λένε «τ' αη Λουκά σπείρε κουκκιά». Στη Θράκη, που διατήρησε πολλά λατρευτικά έθιμα αρχαίας καταγωγής γίνονται τελετές υπέρ γονιμότητας της γης. Στο Τζαντό της Θράκης γίνεται η περιφορά της ξύλινης τζαμάλας (καμήλας). Xωρικοί με παράξενα ρούχα κρατώντας κλαδιά και στεφάνια από κληματαριά (σύμβολον βλαστήσεως) στο κεφάλι συνοδεύουν την καμήλα και περιέρχονται όλα τα σπίτια του χωριού με ευχές για «καλή σπορά». Οι λιτανείες για βροχή το μήνα Οκτώβριο (πρωτοβρόχια): Ο Οκτώβρης είναι ο καταλληλότερος μήνας για σπορά. Για να σπείρει ο γεωργός πρέπει πρώτα να βρέξει, τα πρωτοβρόχια είναι απαραίτητα για τη σπορά. Κι αν δε βρέξει; Τι γίνεται τότε; Τότε γίνεται λιτανεία. Οι κάτοικοι του χωριού συγκεντρώνονται στην εκκλησία και, αφού διαβάσει ο παπάς ειδική ευχή, παίρνουν τις εικόνες και ξεχύνονται στον κάμπο, με τον παπά επικεφαλής να ψέλνει. Με τη λιτανεία-προσευχή και σεβασμό στο Θεό, οι αγρότες παρακαλούν το Θεό για να φέρει βροχή. Τον Οκτώβρη αρχίζουν τα πρωτοβρόχια, που με τη σιγανή και επίμονη βροχή τους θα μαλακώσουν τον κόλπο της γης, κατάξερο από το καλοκαιρινό λιοπύρι. «Ψιχαλίζει, ψιχαλίζει στη μικρή μας την αυλή και το μάρμαρο ποτίζει...» τραγουδούν τα παιδιά τον Οκτώβρη, τον κοπιαστικό μήνα της σποράς. Οι γεωργοί περιμένουν με λαχτάρα τις πρώτες βροχές που θα την ετοιμάσουν για το όργωμα. Σαν ξαστερώνει, ο καιρός είναι σταθερός, χωρίς κρύο ή ζέστη. Συνηθισμένο όμως είναι και το «μικρό καλοκαιράκι» ή όπως αλλιώς το λένε, το «καλοκαιράκι του Αι- Δημητριού». Τότε οι βροχές σταματάνε, το θερμόμετρο ανεβαίνει κι οι άνθρωποι το νομίζουν για ένα δεύτερο, μικρό καλοκαίρι. Απ' αυτό τον καιρό ευνοούνται και τα χρυσάνθεμα, που ο λαός τα λέει αγιοδημητριάτικα. Όποιος δεν σπείρει τον Οκτώβρη, δεν πρόκειται να' χει πλούσια σοδειά. Για να σπείρει όμως, πρέπει απαραίτητα να βρέξει, να βρέξει τόσο, ώστε να χορτάσει η γη και να δώσει μπόλικο σιτάρι. Στην αντίθετη περίπτωση θ' αναγκαστεί να πουλήσει τα βόδια του, για ν' αγοράσει στάρι όπως λένε στην Κύπρο. Για τη σπορά, το θρησκευτικό σημάδι του χρόνου είναι η Κυριακή του Σπορέως όπου διαβάζεται στην εκκλησία η παραβολή του Σπορέως (Λουκά Η 5-15). Ένα άλλο σημαντικό σημάδι του χρόνου μέσα στον Οκτώβριο είναι η γιορτή του Αγίου Δημητρίου στις 26 του μήνα που μαζί με τη γιορτή του Αγίου Γεωργίου στις 23 Απριλίου αποτελούν για τους κτηνοτρόφους τα δύο συνόρατα του χρόνου. Χωρίζουν, δηλαδή, το κτηνοτροφικό έτος σε δύο εξάμηνα, το θερινό και το χειμερινό. Γι αυτό και στις γιορτές αυτές αρχίζουν και τελειώνουν οι συμβάσεις και οι άλλες συμφωνίες μεταξύ τους, αλλά και με τους γεωργούς. Άγιος Δημήτριος: Δημήτρηδες υπάρχουν σχεδόν όσοι και Γιώργηδες, γιατί και οι δύο Άγιοι έχουν τιμηθεί εξαιρετικά απ' τους γεωργούς και τους κτηνοτρόφους, που αποτελούσαν το μεγαλύτερο μέρος του ελληνικού πληθυσμού. Καβάλα στ' άλογά τους - άσπρο, κάτασπρο του Αι-Γιώργη, κοκκινωπό του Αι- Δημήτρη - δείχνουν με τα όπλα που κρατούν πως είναι αποφασισμένοι να προστατέψουν τους γεωργούς και τους κτηνοτρόφους από κάθε κακό. Τους ίδιους και τις φαμίλιες τους, τα ζώα και τα χωράφια, ολόκληρο το βιος τους. Ανήμερα της γιορτής γίνεται και το άνοιγμα των κρασιών και η δοκιμή τους με την ευχή «καλόπιοτο» ή «και του χρόνου». Πρώτη δουλειά είναι να έρθει ο παπάς, ν αγιάσει τα βαρέλια ρίχνοντας μέσα λίγο αγιασμό. Ύστερα ο νοικοκύρης θα τραβήξει απ τον πείρο και θα προσφέρει πρώτα στον παπά, που θα δώσει τις ευχές του. Στα χωριά της Πελοποννήσου συνήθιζαν οι νοικοκυραίοι να πηγαίνουν ένα μπουκάλι κρασί στην εκκλησία, για να λειτουργηθεί. Απ' αυτό το αγιασμένο έριχναν και λίγο στα βαρέλια τους, να βλογηθεί και το υπόλοιπο. Τούτη την ώρα έχουν ορίσει και οι κτηνοτρόφοι να κατέβουν στα χειμαδιά. Τσελιγκάδες και βοσκοί με τις φαμίλιες τους, τα κοπάδια τους και ολόκληρο το νοικοκυριό τους φορτωμένο στα ζώα, αφήνουν τα βουνά. Του Αγίου Γεωργίου πάλι! Για καλό και για κακό έχουν κρεμάσει «φυλαχτά» στα ζωντανά τους. Για να τα προφυλάξουν από το κακό μάτι, τους βγάζουν τα μεγάλα (Continued on page 30)

26 Page 26 September/October 2012 Η ΙΣΤΟΡΙΑ ΜΑΣ Το 2012 είναι μια επετειακή χρονιά στην ιστορία της Ελλάδας. Εφέτος συμπληρώνονται 100 χρόνια από την Απελευθέρωση πρώτα της Θεσσαλονίκης το 1912 και μετά πολλών άλλων περιοχών της Ελλάδας, 90 χρόνια από την Μικρασιατική Καταστροφή, 190 χρόνια από την Σφαγή της Χίου, και άλλες σημαδιακές ημερομηνίες όπως η μέρα του ΟΧΙ, που έχουν γραφτεί με χρυσά γράμματα στην Ελληνική Ιστορία. Με αυτό το αφιέρωμα θα προσπαθήσουμε να αποδώσουμε τον ελάχιστο φόρο τιμής στους νεκρούς μας που θυσιάστηκαν με τον πιο βάναυσο τρόπο και στους ήρωες επώνυμους και ανώνυμους που πάνω από όλα έβαλαν την πατρίδα. Δεν πρέπει ποτέ να ξεχνούμε γιατί «λαός χωρίς μνήμη είναι λαός χωρίς μέλλον». Και αν οι συγκυρίες μας έφεραν σε άλλη χώρα, κι εδώ καταφέραμε να διατηρήσουμε την μνήμη και να την μεταλαμπαδεύσουμε στα παιδιά μας. Σας παρακαλούμε μεταφέρετε στην οικογένεια σας αυτά που διαβάζετε. Ζητούμε εθελοντές ΜΕΤΑΦΡΑΣΤΕΣ, ακριβώς για να μπορέσουμε να μεταφέρουμε αυτές τις μνήμες και στις επόμενες γενεές. Σας ευχαριστούμε. H ΑΠΕΛΕΥΘΕΡΩΣΗ ΤΗΣ ΘΕΣΣΑΛΟΝΙΚΗΣ, 26 ΟΚΤΩΒΡΙΟΥ 1912 Η 26η Οκτωβρίου αποτελεί την πλέον σημαντική ημέρα για τη Θεσσαλονίκη, καθώς είναι η γιορτή του πολιούχου της Αγίου Δημητρίου και συνδυάζεται με την επέτειο της απελευθέρωσης της πόλης, το Συνοπτικά θα παραθέσουμε τα παρακάτω ιστορικά γεγονότα: Η Θεσσαλονίκη που αλώθηκε από τους Οθωμανούς το 1430 μετά την κήρυξη του Α' Βαλκανικού είχε την ευκαιρία για να απελευθερωθεί. Τον Οκτώβριου του 1912, μετά την κήρυξη του Α' Βαλκανικού πολέμου με συμμάχους της Ελλάδας την Σερβία και την Βουλγαρία, εναντίον της καταρρέουσας Οθωμανικής αυτόκρατορίας, ο Ελληνικός στρατός εφορμώντας από τη Λάρισα Βόρεια, απελευθέρωσε την Ελασσόνα, την Κατερίνη, την Βέροια. Αρχηγός του Ελληνικού στρατού ο διάδοχος Κωνσταντίνος και Πρωθυπουργός ο Ελευθέριος Βενιζέλος. Ο Ελευθέριος Βενιζέλος, γνωρίζοντας ότι οι Βούλγαροι ήδη κατέλαβαν την Καβάλα και τις Σέρρες, θέλησε να προχωρήσει ο στρατός προς ανατολάς, προκειμένου να προλάβει την απελευθέρωση της Θεσσαλονίκης, ενώ η βασιλική οικογένεια επιθυμούσε να προχωρήσει ο στρατός βόρεια, προς απελευθέρωση του Μοναστηριού για να προλάβει τους Σέρβους που κατέβαιναν νότια. Πραγματικά, ο Ελληνικός Στρατός, μετά την απελευθέρωση της Βέροιας, στις 20 Οκτωβρίου πολιορκεί την πόλη των Γιαννιτσών και κατορθώνει και διασπά το Τουρκικό μέτωπο και εισέρχεται στα Γιαννιτσά. Οι Τούρκοι, οπισθοχωρούν προς την Θεσσαλονίκη. Προκειμένου να καθυστερήσουν τον Ελληνικό στρατό, καταστρέφουν τις γέφυρες του Λουδία, του Αξιού και του Γαλλικού. Αγγελιοφόροι αναφέρουν ότι η 2η Βουλγαρική μεραρχία βρίσκεται στην πεδιάδα του Λαγκαδά. Ο Αξιός τεράστιος και αδιάβατος. Τη νύχτα της 23ης προς 24η Οκτωβρίου οι Ελληνικές εμπροσθοφυλακές απελπίζονται γιατί η κατασκευή γέφυρας απαιτεί τουλάχιστον τρείς μέρες και υλικά δεν υπάρχουν. Η Θεσσαλονίκη κινδυνεύει να χαθεί δια παντός. Σε μια κίνηση απόγνωσης, στρατιώτες απευθύνονται στα γύρω χωριά, τα Μάλγαρα, τα Κύμινα, τη Χαλάστρα και τη Σίνδο. Η ανταπόκριση των κατοίκων είναι άμεση. Χιλιάδες άνθρωποι προσφέρουν ότι ξύλινο υπάρχει στο σπίτι τους και στο βιός τους, τις βάρκες τους, τα ξύλινα βαρέλια, τις πόρτες από τα σπίτια τους, ακόμα και τις κάσες. Δουλεύουν ασταμάτητα χιλιάδες κόσμου και στρατιωτών, άυπνοι και το πρωί της 24ης Οκτωβρίου η γέφυρα είναι έτοιμη. Η διάβαση των ποταμών κρατάει μέχρι το πρωί της 26ης Οκτωβρίου, και από το μεσημέρι της ίδιας μέρας, οι προφυλακές της 7ης μεραρχίας είναι ορατές πλέον από τους πανικόβλητους επιζήσαντες Τούρκους που βρισκόταν σε ακόμη αθλιότερη κατάσταση. Το απόγευμα της 26ης διάσπαρτες ομάδες της 7ης μπαίνουν στο Χαρμάνκιοϊ (Κορδελιό) και στα υψώματα του Ευόσμου. Αντίθετα, η Ελληνική χωροφυλακή προωθείται και εισέρχεται από τη Δυτική πύλη στη Θεσσαλονίκη. Η Βουλγαρική 2η Μεραρχία βρίσκεται 4,5 χιλ. μακριά από το κέντρο της πόλης και στρατοπεδεύει τη νύχτα στην περιοχή του σημερινού Τιτάν. Εν τω μεταξύ ο διοικητής της Θεσσαλονίκης, Ταξίμ Πασάς, διαπραγματεύεται την παράδοση της πόλης στους Έλληνες, λέγοντας "από τους Έλληνες την πήραμε, στους Έλληνες θα την παραδώσουμε". Τελικά την νύχτα της 26ης προς 27η Οκτωβρίου υπογράφεται το πρωτόκολλο παράδοσης της πόλης. Την επομένη, ο Ελληνικός στρατός εισέρχεται πανηγυρικά στην πόλη. Τελείται πανηγυρική δοξολογία στον ιερό ναό του Αγίου Μηνά. Είναι συγκλονιστικές οι μαρτυρίες ανθρώπων από την υποδοχή του στρατού. Η πόλη ανοίγει τις πύλες της στους απελευθερωτές. Πηγή:

27 September/October 2012 Page 27 ΑΓΙΟΣ ΔΗΜΗΤΡΙΟΣ, Ο ΠΡΟΣΤΑΤΗΣ ΤΗΣ ΘΕΣΣΑΛΟΝΙΚΗΣ ΚΑΙ ΟΛΗΣ ΤΗΣ ΜΑΚΕΔΟΝΙΑΣ Ο Οκτώβριος είναι ταυτισμένος στη μνήμη του λαού μας με τη γιορτή του Αγίου Δημητρίου στις 26 Δεκεμβρίου. Ο Άγιος Δημήτριος είναι ένας από τούς δημοφιλέστερους Αγίους της ορθόδοξης Εκκλησίας, όχι μόνο στην Ελλάδα αλλά και σε όλο τον ορθόδοξο κόσμο, όπως φανερώνει η συχνότητα του ονόματος (Ντμίτρι, Ντουμίτρου, κλπ.). Φαίνεται πώς αυτή η δημοτικότητα δεν είναι άσχετη με την αίσθηση της συνεχούς παρουσίας του Αγίου ανά τους αιώνες, όπως πιστοποιείται από τις εμφανίσεις του και τα θαύματά του. Η ιστορία του μεγαλομάρτυρος αγίου Δημητρίου δεν τελειώνει στο 303 μ.χ. που μαρτύρησε. Από τη μέρα του μαρτυρίου του αρχίζει μια νέα ιστορία, εκπληκτική, που φθάνει ως σήμερα και θα συνεχισθεί στους αιώνες. Ο μεγαλομάρτυς Δημήτριος έγινε η ψυχή της Θεσσαλονίκης, ο οδηγός, ο πατέρας, ο προστάτης, ο πολιούχος, ο «φιλόπολις» και «σωσίπολις», ο «φιλόπατρις» κι ο «σωσίπατρις». Ο μεγαλομάρτυς δεν υπήρξε μόνο ο θαυματουργός ιατρός των σωματικών και ψυχικών νόσων, αλλά και προστάτης ένδοξος της αγαπητής του πατρίδος. Οι συγγραφείς εγκωμίων του Αγίου Δημητρίου, Ευστάθιος Θεσσαλονίκης, Γρηγόριος ο Παλαμάς και Δημήτριος Χρυσολωράς, αναφέρουν ότι το σώμα του Αγίου ετάφη στον τόπο του μαρτυρίου, ο δε τάφος μετεβλήθη σε βαθύ φρέαρ που ανέβλυζε μύρο, εξ ου και η προσωνυμία του Μυροβλήτου. Στο ίδιο σημείο έχει κτιστεί η εκκλησία του Αγίου Δημητρίου στην Θεσσαλονίκη. Στις βυζαντινές εικόνες αλλά και στη σύγχρονη αγιογραφία ο Άγιος Δημήτριος παρουσιάζεται αρκετές φορές ως καβαλάρης με κόκκινο άλογο, σε αντιδιαστολή του λευκού αλόγου του Αγίου Γεωργίου, να πατά τον άπιστο Λυαίο. Τα θαύματα που έχει επιτελέσει μέχρι σήμερα ο μεγαλομάρτυς και αθλοφόρος του Χριστού Δημήτριος ο Μυροβλήτης είναι αναρίθμητα, πάρα πολλά δε εξ αυτών έχουν καταγραφεί σε διάφορα αγιολογικά και ιστορικά κείμενα. Αυτό που πρέπει να σημιώσουμε είναι ότι έχει προστατέψει την Θεσσαλονίκη από βαρβάρους κατακτητές ανά τους αιώνες. Χάρης Ανδρεόπουλος 90 ΧΡΟΝΙΑ ΑΠΟ ΤΗΝ ΜΙΚΡΑΣΙΑΤΙΚΗ ΚΑΤΑΣΤΡΟΦΗ Το 1822 η Χίος, τον Σεπτέμβριο του 1922 η Σμύρνη 190 ΧΡΟΝΙΑ ΑΠΟ ΤΗΝ ΚΑΤΑΣΤΡΟΦΗ ΤΗΣ ΧΙΟΥ Οι πληγές του Ελληνισμού του Αιγαίου και της Ιωνίας Το 1822, σε μια εκτεταμένη προσπάθεια αντιποίνων από την μεριά των Τούρκων, καταστρέφεται ολοσχερώς η Χίος, το πανέμορφο αυτό νησί του Αιγαίου. Το γεγονός αυτό συγκλόνισε την Παγκόσμια Κοινή Γνώμη, διότι (σε μία Ευρώπη που κυριαρχούσε η προκατάληψη για τα κίνητρα των επαναστάσεων των Λαών, βλέπε Ιερά Συμμαχία ) απεκάλυπτε τον θανάσιμο κίνδυνο για τον υπόδουλο Ελληνισμό από την συνέχιση της Τουρκικής κατάκτησης, αλλά και την ακραία βαρβαρότητα των Οθωμανών Τούρκων. Τότε ο φιλελληνισμός αυξήθηκε και χαρακτηριστικά αναφέρουμε εδώ δύο από τις εκφράσεις του: ο περίφημος πίνακας του Ευγενίου Ντελακρουά και το ποίημα του Βίκτωρος Ουγκώ με τίτλο «Το Ελληνόπουλο». Το 1922, μετά από 100 χρόνια, σαν μοιραίο παιχνίδι του χρόνου και της Μοίρας, η έναντι της Χίου λαμπρή πόλη της Σμύρνης καταστρέφεται ολοσχερώς από τους Τούρκους. Την πυρπόληση την συνοδεύουν σφαγές που δεν έχουν σε τίποτε να υστερήσουν αυτών της Χίου. Και ένα κρίσιμο σημείο: και στις δύο σφαγές οι Δυτικοί Χριστιανοί περιόρισαν τον ρόλο τους στον σιωπηλό παρατηρητή, αν δεν ενίσχυσαν την τουρκική εγκληματικότητα. Ένας σπουδαίος Ευρωπαίος Ιστορικός υπήρξε ο Γάλλος Εδουάρδος Ντριώ. Ήταν ένας από τους λίγους Δυτικούς που επεσήμαναν τον αισχρό ρόλο των Δυτικών Δυνάμεων (κυρίως των Αγγλογάλλων από την μεριά της Αντάντ) έναντι της Ελλάδος κατά την περίοδο Στο κορυφαίο βιβλίο του με τίτλο «Ελλάδα και Α Παγκόσμιος Πόλεμος Από το Κίνημα των Νεοτούρκων (1908) μέχρι τη συνθήκη της Λωζάννης (1923)» (που κυκλοφόρησε για πρώτη φορά το 1999 στα Ελληνικά σε μετάφραση και σχόλια του Κώστα Μπαρμπή από τις Εκδόσεις Πελασγός) ο Ντριώ επιχειρεί έναν παραλληλισμό των δύο αυτών Τραγωδιών που με διαφορά 100 ετών έπληξαν τον Ελληνισμό. Αναφέρει ο Ντριώ στο ανωτέρω βιβλίο του (σελίδες ): «Η πυρπόληση της Σμύρνης θα παραμείνει, αναμφίβολα, ξεχωριστό γεγονός στη διαδρομή των αιώνων, αφού θα μπορούσε κανείς να αναρωτηθεί μήπως ήταν σοβαρότερο συμβάν από την άλωση της Πόλης το 1453». Σημαδεύει την εκατονταετηρίδα των σφαγών της Χίου και προέρχεται από ίδια άγρια ένστικτα. Όσοι ένιωθαν ντροπή, επειδή ήταν και οι ίδιοι ένοχοι, την απέδωσαν ορθά στους Τούρκους. Επικαλούνται το ότι η πυρκαγιά ξέσπασε τρεις μέρες μετά τη φυγή των Ελλήνων (στρατιωτών) και την κατάληψη της πόλης από τους Τούρκους και το ότι σώθηκε η τουρκική συνοικία, ενώ όλες οι άλλες η χριστιανική, η ελεύθερη, η ελληνική και η αρμενική - καταστραφήκαν και μετατράπηκαν σε αποκαΐδια με τον πιο μεθοδικό τρόπο. 28 Page 28 September/October ΧΡΟΝΙΑ (Continued from previous page) Η Σμύρνη ήταν το «άνθος της Μεσογείου»: κάτοικοι, πολλοί Γάλλοι, μητρόπολη ελληνογαλλική, θαυμαστός κήπος με τα απλωμένα περίχωρα της, λιμάνι με σπουδαία κίνηση, σύμβολο αυτών που θα μπορούσαν να πετύχουν «από κοινού» Ελλάδα και Γαλλία για την οργάνωση και την αξιοποίηση της Ανατολής. Ταυτόχρονα, όμως, ήταν και η έδρα τριών μητροπολιτών ή επισκόπων ορθοδόξου, καθολικού και της αρμενικής Εκκλησίας. Άρα ήταν η «Άπιστη», η «Γκιαούρ Ιζμίρ», επομένως ήταν καταδικασμένη σε θάνατο. Η «Γκιαούρ Ιζμίρ» δεν υπάρχει πια. Αμερικανικές μαρτυρίες έχουν περιγράψει τη φρίκη των σφαγών και της πυρκαγιάς: συγκλονιστικότερη είναι η περίπτωση του μητροπολίτη Χρυσοστόμου, που παραδόθηκε από τον στρατηγό Νουρέν Ντιν στην μανία του όχλου, σπρώχτηκε μέσα σε ένα κουρείο για να του αφαιρέσουν τα ράσα και να τον αναγκάσουν να φορέσει άσπρη κελεμπία, ύστερα ξυλοκοπήθηκε άγρια, ποδοπατήθηκε, σκεπάστηκε με φτυσίματα και ακαθαρσίες, του τσάκισαν τα πόδια, του ξερίζωσαν τα γένια, του έκοψαν τα αυτιά και του έβγαλαν τα μάτια. Με ανάλογο τρόπο είχε μαρτυρήσει, πριν εκατό χρόνια, ο πατριάρχης Γρηγόριος Ε της Κωνσταντινουπόλεως, κατά το αιματοβαμμένο Πάσχα του 1821: υπάρχει μία φρικιαστική ενότητα και συνέχεια σε αυτήν την θηριώδη γενοκτονική πολιτική των Τούρκων Πεντακόσιες χιλιάδες ανθρώπινες υπάρξεις εξοντώθηκαν, με πρωτοφανείς μεθόδους αγριότητας. Διακόσιες ογδόντα χιλιάδες κάτοικοι της Σμύρνης και της γύρω περιοχής καταδιώχτηκαν και στριμώ-χτηκαν στην παραλία. Οι Τούρκοι τους έσπρωχναν στο νερό. Τα σκάφη στο λιμάνι δεν επαρκούσαν ή δεν ήταν έτοιμα να τους δεχτούν. Σε όλο το μήκος της αποβάθρας επέπλεαν σωροί από πτώματα και σε πλάτος πολλών μέτρων σχημάτιζαν ένα ανάχωμα, πάνω στο οποίο θα μπορούσε κανείς να βαδίσει Οι άνδρες και τα νεότερα σε ηλικία άτομα, κορίτσια ή αγόρια, οδηγήθηκαν στο εσωτερικό. Όσοι επέζησαν, κατέφυγαν στην Ελλάδα, στη «μητέρα Ελλάδα», η οποία τους δέχτηκε όλους χωρίς να ρωτήσει ποια ήταν η εθνικότητα τους ελληνική, αρμενική, ασσυριακή ή κιρκασιανή. Γυναίκες, γέροι, παιδιά, σε τρομερή κατάσταση σωματική και ψυχική, νηστικοί και μισόγυμνοι! Μ έ σ α σ ε συνοικισμούς που κατασκευάστηκαν για να τους στεγάσουν, οι γριούλες και τα παιδιά κουβαλούσαν στο βλέμμα την φρίκη αυτών που είχαν δει. Επί εβδομάδες και μήνες πάνω στις στέγες των βαγονιών που τους μετέφεραν από την Θράκη στην Μακεδονία, στα ελληνικά καράβια που έσπευδαν να τους σώσουν, ανθρώπινα τσαμπιά κρεμόντανε από οτιδήποτε, κοπάδια πανικόβλητα από την καταιγίδα. Η «Άπιστη Σμύρνη» δεν υπάρχει πια. Ούτε Έλληνες στην Ιωνία. Η εθνική δαντέλα των ελληνικών πληθυσμών, η οποία, κατά μήκος όλων των παραλίων της Μικράς Ασίας, αφηγούνταν στους χάρτες μας το εγχείρημα μιας χιλιόχρονης εγκατάστασης, κομματιάστηκε και βουτήχτηκε στο αίμα. Ένα έγκλημα εις βάρος του Πολιτισμού συνετελέσθη στα εδάφη της Μικράς Ασίας το Εκατό χρόνια δηλαδή μετά από την σφαγή της Χίου. Ενα γεγονός που αποτελεί «χαρακτηριστικό» στοιχείο της Τουρκικής Ιστορίας: ένας Λαός που ήρθε από τα βάρβαρα βάθη της Ασίας, ήλθε σε επαφή για εκατοντάδες χρόνια με λαούς πολιτισμένους ή και τους κατάκτησε (όπως ο δικός μας), αλλά η συνεισφορά του στον Διεθνή Πολιτισμό υπήρξε ελάχιστη. Ακόμη και τις τελευταίες δεκαετίες αφήνει πίσω του εγκλήματα και σφαγές. Μεγάλο θύμα του υπήρξε και ο Ελληνισμός της Μικράς Ασίας, ενός χώρου που ανέδειξε κορυφαία στοιχεία και πνευματικές δημιουργίες που ως σήμερα κοσμούν τον Παγκόσμιο Πολιτισμό. Από τους Προσωκρατικούς της Ιωνίας μέχρι την πνευματική προσφορά της περιόδου του Βυζαντίου, η ανατολική πλευρά του Αιγαίου ήταν ένας Φάρος Πολιτισμού. Σήμερα τι συμβαίνει; Τι έμεινε από μία τόση λαμπρή πορεία του παρελθόντος; Οι νέοι κατακτητές των εδαφών της Ιωνίας, από τον 14ο αιώνα ως τα σήμερα δηλαδή βλέπουν τις περιοχές αυτές σαν ένα τουριστικό αξιοθέατο που θα τους προσφέρει πολλά λεφτά. Οι Αρχαιολογικοί Χώροι όπου έλαμπε κάποτε το Ελληνικό Φως, τώρα έχουν γίνει αντικείμενο οικονομικής εκμετάλλευσης, αλλά και παραχάραξης: δεν είναι λίγες οι φορές που οι Τούρκοι μιλούν στους τουρίστες για τον Πολιτισμό των προγόνων τους, αλλά όχι των Ελλήνων. Και εδώ, όπως και με τους Σκοπιανούς και τους Αλβανούς, έχουμε την διαρκή παραχάραξη της Ελληνικής Ιστορίας. Αλλά η Μικρά Ασία, όπως εύστοχα είχε επισημάνει και ένας άλλος έντιμος Δυτικός Διπλωμάτης, ο Αμερικανός Πρόξενος Τζωρτζ Χόρτον στο σπουδαίο βιβλίο του «Η κατάρα της Ασίας» έγινε μετά από τόσα τουρκικά εγκλήματα «ένα Νεκροταφείο Ελληνικών Πόλεων». Αυτήν την εικόνα, αυτές τις στιγμές δεν μπορούμε να τις ξεχνάμε. Δεν πρέπει να τις ξεχνάμε. Αυτό είναι το ελάχιστο που μπορούμε να προσφέρουμε ως θυμίαμα στην μνήμη των χιλιάδων θυμάτων της Μικρασιατικής Τραγωδίας, σε όλους αυτούς που άφησαν την ζωή στα εδάφη εκείνα με το Όραμα της Ελληνικής Ιωνίας. 29 September/October 2012 Page 29 28η ΟΚΤΩΒΡΙΟΥ 1940 Όταν την 6η πρωινή της 28ης Οκτωβρίου 1940 οι σειρήνες της αντιαεροπορικής άμυνας ξύπνησαν την Αθήνα, παρόλο που κανείς δεν γνώριζε τί είχε προηγηθεί τις τρεις προηγούμενες ώρες στην οικία του Πρωθυπουργού, ούτε τις αποφάσεις του Υπουργικού συμβουλίου, ο κόσμος ξεχύθηκε στους δρόμους λες και περίμενε εκείνη ακριβώς τη στιγμή για να βροντοφωνάξει το ιστορικό ΟΧΙ, σαν μια καθολική επιλογή, η οποία δεν μπορούσε να είναι διαφορετική. Κι αντίθετα από τα όσα επιτάσσει ίσως η κοινή λογική ενώπιον μιας δύναμης ισχυρής τόσο σε αριθμό όσο και σε δύναμη σαν την Ιταλία, αντί να επικρατεί ανησυχία και φόβος, μια διάθεση ευφορίας αναμεμειγμένη με υπερηφάνεια, λεβεντιά και ανδρεία, πλήρωσε ολόκληρο τον Ελληνισμό με την πεποίθηση ότι καλείται να προστατέψει τα τρεις χιλιάδες και πλέον έτη της ιστορίας του. Την εξέλιξη της αναμετρήσεως μπορούσε κανείς εύκολα να την μαντέψει, με δεδομένη την αμαχητί ή έπειτα από ολιγοήμερη αντίσταση παράδοση των περισσότερων ευρωπαϊκών χωρών στις δυνάμεις του Άξονα. Το ελληνικό πάλι ΟΧΙ ξάφνιασε ως κεραυνός εν αιθρία, πεισμώνοντας τους επιτιθέμενους και γεμίζοντας ενθουσιασμό και ελπίδα χώρες φίλα προσκείμενες προς την Ελλάδα. Για μας πάλι, η συγκεκριμένη στάση ήταν φυσική απόρροια της ιστορίας και της ιδιοσυγκρασίας μας. Γράφει ο Γεώργιος Βλάχος στην Καθημερινή" της 29ης Οκτωβρίου 1940: «Αλλά διατί πριν εδώ κινηθή προς τον πρωθυπουργικόν οίκον ο φαιδρότατος αντιπρόσωπός των και κινηθή εκεί εις την Ήπειρον ο στρατός των, δεν έρριπτον εν πρόχειρον βλέμμα εις την Ελληνικήν Ιστορίαν;... Πότε η Ελλάς παρεδόθη αμαχητί; Πότε ενικήθη πριν ποτίση το χώμα της με την τελευταίαν ρανίδα του αίματός της; Εις ποίαν στιγμήν έκαμε λογαριασμούς των δυνάμεών της προς τας δυνάμεις του αντιπάλου της, διά να μάθη έπειτα αν έχη την δυνατότητα να υπερασπίση την τιμήν της; Κράτος μικρόν με ιστορίαν μεγίστην, μήτηρ θηλάσασα την υφήλιον, φάρος λαμπροτάτου φωτός, η Ελλάς, καταυγάσασα τους αιώνας, έδωσεν εις όλην την ανθρωπότητα όχι μόνον την ζωήν, το φως, τον πολιτισμόν, τα γράμματα και τας τέχνας, αλλά και το παράδειγμα της αυτοθυσίας και του ηρωισμού, την Σαλαμίνα, τας Θερμοπύλας, το Ζάλογγον, το Σούλι, το Μεσολόγγι... Κληρονόμοι πλούτου τόσον μεγάλου, βαρείς από τον φόρτον τόσων θρύλων και τόσων παραδόσεων, πώς μας εφαντάσθησαν τώρα κύπτοντας εμπρός εις τα κατάστιχα των πετρελαίων και της βενζίνης και των μηχανοκινήτων μονάδων και αποφασίζοντας να παραδώσωμεν την ιστορίαν μας εις τους αριθμούς και εις τα πετρέλαια την τιμήν μας;» Τα γεγονότα είναι σε όλους σχεδόν γνωστά ως το Επος του '40, με την έμπρακτη συμβολή της Εκκλησίας στον άνισο αυτό αγώνα, και τις θυσίες και τις εκατόμβες του απλού ελληνικού λαού. Επί πέντε μήνες η Ελλάδα πολεμούσε νικήτρια στα βουνά της Ηπείρου και απελευθέρωνε ελληνικά εδάφη, όπως το Αργυρόκαστρο, Κορυτσά, Τεπελένι κλπ. Ττο διάστημα αυτό ο στρατός, το ναυτικό και η αεροπορία επιτέλεσαν θαύματα, εκμηδενίζοντας την αριθμητική και τεχνολογική υπεροχή του αντιπάλου. Καθ' όλη την διάρκεια της Κατοχής η Εθνική Αντίσταση συνέχισε τον αγώνα της με άκαμπτο φρόνημα και αψηφώντας το οιοδήποτε τίμημα. Όλα αυτά οφείλονται για μία ακόμη φορά στη δύναμη και τη σημασία του ηθικού παράγοντα, τον οποίο όψιμα πολλοί έχουν αρχίσει να αμφισβητούν. Κι όμως, ακόμα και σήμερα που οι πόλεμοι διεξάγονται με εντελώς διαφορετικά μέσα και κανόνες, τίποτα δεν μπορεί να επιτευχθεί όταν η ψυχή δεν φλογίζεται από το πάθος της θυσίας. Μιας θυσίας η οποία προϋποθέτει ιδανικά, όπως η Πατρίδα, η Πίστη, η Ιστορία. Τα ιδανικά αυτά ποτέ δεν έλειψαν από την ζωή μας. Η αντίσταση μας διαχρονικά, συνίσταται στην ενότητα του πνευματος και στην ομοψυχία του λαού μας. Όσα παρατέθηκαν είναι αρκετά για να καταδείξουν τη σημασία της ενότητας του λαού μας, της πίστης στον Θεό, της υπεράσπισης των ιδανικών και της ιστορίας μας. Κράτησα για το τέλος ένα κείμενο, το οποίο εάν αλλάξουμε ελάχιστες λέξεις θα μπορούσε κάλλιστα να έχει γραφτεί μόλις χτες, μιας που το τελευταίο διάστημα έχουμε γίνει μάρτυρες μιας νέας προσπάθειας εισβολής ενάντια στην εθνική μας κυριαρχία, η οποία όμως δεν διαφέρει από όσες έχουμε ζήσει στο παρελθόν. Οι Πέρσες δεν ζήτησαν τίποτε άλλο από τους Έλληνες, παρά γην καί ύδωρ. Οι Ιταλοί ζήτησαν απλά την πρόσβαση στα ελληνικά λιμάνια και συγκοινωνιακά δίκτυα, οδούς και σιδηρόδρομους. Και οι δανειστές μας σήμερα ζητούν ως ανταλλάγματα την εκχώρηση της εθνικής μας κυριαρχίας και του πλούτου που κρύβει η αιματοβαμμένη γη των προγόνων μας. Το κείμενο που ακολουθεί είναι απόσπασμα από το άρθρο του Γεωργίου Βλάχου με τίτλο ΟΛΟΙ ΜΑΖΙ, που δημοσιεύτηκε στην "Καθημερινή" της 4ης Νοεμβρίου 1940: «Λοιπόν;... Θα συνεχίσωμεν την συζήτησιν; Θα βάλωμεν κάτω έναν καφέν και θα σταθώμεν γύρω από το φλιτζάνι του οι απόλεμοι, οι άχρηστοι, οι καφενόβιοι, διά να πούμε, περί του ποιος θα νικήση και ποιος θα επικρατήσει;... Προς Θεού! θα νικήση η Ελλάς! Όλους; ΟΛΟΥΣ! ΟΛΟΝ ΤΟΝ ΚΟΣΜΟΝ! Χωρίς συλλογισμούς, χωρίς συζητήσεις, χωρίς κεφάλια τα οποία αργοκινούνται και αμφιβάλλουν, χωρίς μυαλό. Μυαλό δεν χρειάζεται. Χρειάζεται ενθουσιασμός και παραφροσύνη. Χρειάζεται θάρρος αλόγιστον και καρδιά. Με αυτό το υλικόν έγινεν ο Αγών του Εικοσιένα. Με αυτά τα όπλα νικούν οι λαοί. Ήρθατε να πάρετε την Ήπειρον; ΔΕΝ ΣΑΣ ΤΗΝ ΔΙΝΟΜΕ. Έχετε Στρατούς, έχετε Στόλους, έχετε αεροπλάνα, είσθε σαράντα πέντε εκατομμύρια και είμαστε πέντε. ΔΕΝ ΣΑΣ ΤΗΝ ΔΙΝΟΜΕ. Θα μας κάψετε. ΔΕΝ ΣΑΣ ΤΗΝ ΔΙΝΟΜΕ. Και θα προχωρήσωμεν και θα νικήσωμεν και θα σας πετάξωμεν εις την θάλασσαν. Γίνεται; Γίνεται, δεν γίνεται, αυτό πρέπει να αισθάνεται και να βροντοφωνή η καρδιά. ΚΑΙ ΤΟΤΕ ΘΑ ΓΙΝΗ. The hymns at the Small Entrance are the hymns that change from week to week. At the Small Entrance, when the priest comes out with the Gospel, we sing specific hymns for specific Sundays. These hymns include the apolytikia and the kontakia. During a Vesper service, the troparion of the saint or event that is being commemorated is sung just before the end of the service. For this reason, these troparia are also referred to as apolytikia, or dismissal hymns. The Greek word apolysis means dismissal. The apolitikion is a theme song for a particular saint or event. It is the signature hymn of the day. Every person and every event associated with the church calendar has an apolitikion. Some are very well known, such as the troparions of St. Demetrios, St. George, or of Sts. Constantine and Helen. Others are more obscure, such as the troparion of the Prophet Elijah. This non-canonical book, along with the Gospel accounts of the Theotokos, was extremely influential in shaping the early Church's exalted attitude towards the Virgin Mary. It recounts her divinely planned and angelically announced birth to the aged Joachim and Anna, her miraculous infancy and childhood, and her dedication to the Temple. As Archbishop Kallistos Ware has pointed out, the fact that the Orthodox Church does not include the Protoevangelion of know the apolytikia of the major feasts, such as Pentecost ( Evloghitos I Christe ), the Annunciation ( Simeron tis Sotirias ), or the Elevation of the Holy Cross ( Soson Kyrie ). These hymns are usually sung at the small Entrance on Sundays along with the rotated Resurrection troparia, although on very major feast days the rotated hymns would not normally be chanted. The kontakion is a hymn containing a small sermon about the event or person being recognized on a particular day. If a Sunday is not a major feast day, the kontakion is Prostasia Ton Christianon. In addition to these hymns sung during the Liturgy, there are whole sets of hymns sung during the Vespers and Orthros services. There are series of hymns after Kyrie Ekekraxa during Vespers and series of hymns following the Praises ( Ainoi ) during Orthros. There are hymns associated with the Psalm readings and others associated with the Scripture readings. There may be 50 hymns sung just for a specific day, sometime more and sometime less. παλαιότερα ταξίδευαν σε όλα τα Βαλκάνια. PREPARATION Prepare the soutzoukakia: Cut the bread, place it in a bowl, soak in some red wine and then lightly squeeze it. Discard any excess wine. Mix the minced meat with the bread, the olive oil, the cumin, the garlic, the salt and pepper and make round or oval patties. Place in a tray, cover and refrigerate for 2 hours. Heat the oil in a frying pan and fry a few at a time until brown on all sides. Fry them enough to become firm, do not overcook. Prepare the tomato sauce: Heat the olive oil in a frying pan and fry the onion and garlic. Add the pulped tomato and the tomato paste dissolved in 1/2 cup warm water. Stir in the parsley, the cumin, the sugar, salt and pepper. Leave the sauce on medium heat for approximately minutes till it begins to thicken. Add the soutzoukakia and heat them in the sauce for about 20 minutes turning them carefully once. Serve warm with any side dish like mashed potatoes or pasta and a Greek choriatiki salad.
