Dear Parishioners, I would like to offer some thoughts on the Sunday School which falls under the concept of the Christian Education. I would especially address the intrinsic importance of the Sunday School for our young ones. Through the teaching and the organized catechetical efforts of the Sunday School, the truths of the faith become systematically known to every one of our youngsters. We, the Holy Trinity Community take every possible opportunity to teach the truth, the tradition and the faith we hold. Since I would like mainly to offer some encouragement to the importance of participation in the Sunday School, I would emphasize that no one child of our Community should miss this crucial opportunity. In Sunday School, the Church presents the Christian Way of Life with the moral principles and guidelines and the eternal truths and values of our faith. Sunday School is the necessary healthy environment in the lives of our children. With Sunday School, they will put on the spiritual armor that will enable them to go through life safe and under the protection of the Lord; as the Scripture says: if God is with us who can be against us? (Romans 8,31). I met with the Sunday School Directors and they related to me a lot of good information for our Sunday School. Thus, I thank them for the strong and meaningful leadership they provide. They feel that we have been blessed with good teachers and staff, who are making their sincere efforts to teach the students and provide them with the saving truths of our Faith. At the same time I would like to ask the parents to regularly bring their children to Sunday School, year round. Also we pledge to our children that we will offer the best efforts to teach and give to them all the necessary tools in learning and practicing the Orthodox Faith. Our Sunday School Directors, Ms. Thana Ward and Mrs. Despina Aftosmes and the teachers have developed an excellent plan incorporating a superb curriculum to ensure the best program for each grade. The first day of our Sunday School is Sunday, September 13 th. The objective is to teach the faith and to train our students in the Orthodox Christian way of life. With this major undertaking we allow the Word of the Lord to mold the characters of each student in goodness, honesty, respect and integrity. We want them to believe in the work ethic and discipline, to practice responsibility in their lives, to learn the virtues of love, humility and obedience, to recognize the limits for themselves and to respect our fellowman in society. We create in class the wonderful atmosphere of fellowship, acceptance, appreciation and trust, which are necessary factors to help us for spiritual development. We present the inspiring image that our Church is a Family and we are all members of that same FAMILY, the Household of the Lord, the Family of Holy Trinity Cathedral. We care for each other in this family. We are not critical of others but understanding. We support and comfort each other as Christ has taught us. We teach our children that we do not wish to see them become indifferent, lazy, alcoholics, drug users, immoral, deceivers, lost, etc.., Instead we present and discuss with them priorities, the importance of the Lord in their lives, His Church, the Faith, the Bible, the Saints, the Family, their goals in life. We make sure our children receive from us the right signals to pursue a life with Christ who provides the real life and the meaningful destiny to salvation.

2 THE SOURCE SEPTEMBER 2015 Page 2 As the eagles cannot fly without their two wings, in the same way, our children cannot make it to spiritual uplifting without worship (sacramental life) and catechetical-religious education. Also as the train needs the railroad tracks to move and reach its destination, in the same way our children need worship, Sunday School and religious education as the foundation to move on spiritually and to reach their destination which is the Kingdom of God. In Sunday School, they will learn the way of the Lord. Also they will learn that many times in our lives we may suffer spiritual injuries. We may see ourselves in spiritual trouble from our weaknesses and fallings to sin. In Sunday School and in other spiritual opportunities we are learning how to turn to God in repentance, how to reconcile, how to trust the Church which becomes the spiritual Hospital healing our hurts and restoring our spiritual health. With these thoughts, I would like to invite all the youngsters of our Community to participate in the Sunday School regularly during the entire Sunday School year because we love them and we are concerned for their todays and their tomorrows. Whoever wishes to join Sunday School simply he/she may go to their respective class on Sunday morning after Holy Communion. We also want our students to know the faith, to practice it and finally to pass on the torch of the Orthodox Faith and thus perpetuate the Holy Orthodox Church, which is the legacy of the Saints and the glory of our Trinitarian Lord. Let us ALL, parents, students, clergy, Sunday School Administration, Teachers, Parish Council young and old, support our Sunday School along with the whole Religious Education effort at our Holy Trinity Parish. It is our hope and prayer that the Almighty and Merciful Lord bless these humble efforts for the benefit of our precious children and youngsters, for the benefit of our society and for the benefit of us all. Please help with any encouraging way the Church to achieve its goal for our youth to have a better today and a brighter tomorrow. Please help us to include in Sunday School every child we have in the Cathedral and let us see that all the spiritual opportunities in our Community receive the proper attention and participation of us all. Michael ** ** ** ** ** ** ** ** ** ** ** ** ** ** ** ** ** ** ** ** ** ** ** ** ** ** ** ** ** ** Ευλαβείς Ενορίτες, Θά ήθελα νά παραθέσω μερικές σκέψεις γιά τήν σπουδαιότητα τής Χριστιανικής μας καταρτίσεως καί ιδιαιτέρως τών παιδιών μας. Μέ τήν οργανωμένη Κατηχητική Διακονία τού Κατηχητικού μας Σχολείου, βλέπουμε ότι οι αλήθειες τής πίστεώς μας γίνονται συστηματικά οργανωμένα γνωστές στούς νέους μας. Προσπαθούμε στήν Ενορία μας νά χρησιμοποιούμε κάθε ευκαιρία νά διδάσκουμε τήν αλήθεια, τήν παράδοση καί τήν πίστι πού κρατούμε. Επειδή σ αυτή τήν επικοινωνία μέ ενδιαφέρει νά ενθαρρύνω τήν συμμετοχή στό Κατηχητικό Σχολείο θέλω νά τονίσω ότι κανένα παιδί δέν πρέπει νά χάσει αυτή τήν κρίσιμη γιά τήν ζωή του ευκαιρία. Στό Κατηχητικό Σχολείο η Εκκλησία διδάσκει και συζητά τον τρόπο της Χριστιανικής ζωής με τίς ηθικές αρχές καί τίς σώζουσες αλήθειες καί αξίες τής πίστεώς μας. Τό Κατηχητικό Σχολείο είναι ο απαραίτητος χώρος και το υγιές περιβάλλον στή ζωή τών παιδιών μας. Μέ τό Κατηχητικό Σχολείο τα παιδιά μας μαθαίνουν την Ορθόδοξη πίστη και φορούν τήν πνευματική αρματωσιά πού θά τούς βοηθήση νά περάσουν τήν ζωή μέ ασφάλεια καί μέ τήν προστασία τού Θεού. Καί πράγματι «ει ο Θεός μεθ ημών τίς καθ ημών;» (Ρωμ. 8, 13) Αν ο Θεός είναι μαζί με τα παιδιά μας ποιός μπορεί νά τούς κάνει κακό;

3 THE SOURCE SEPTEMBER 2015 Page 3 Είχα συνάντηση με τους υπευθύνους του Κατηχητικού Σχολείου και μου δώσανε αρκετές χρήσιμες πληροφορίες. Τους ευχαρίστησα για την σωστή και εντυπωσιακή εργασία τους. Γνωρίζουν ότι έχουμε καλούς δασκάλους και βοηθούς που καταβάλλουν ειλικρινείς προσπάθειες να διδάσκουν τις αλήθειες της πίστεώς μας. Στο σημείο αυτό επιτρέψατέ με να τονίσω το απαραίτητο καθήκον των γονέων νά φέρνουν τά παιδιά τους στό Κατηχητικό Σχολείο. Παρακαλούμε τους γονείς με τον καλύτερο τρόπο να παρακινούν και να ευκολύνουν τα παιδιά τους να έρχονται κάθε Κυριακή στην Εκκλησία και να συμμετέχουν στο Κατηχητικό Σχολείο. Εμείς εγγυώμαστε στά παιδιά μας ότι θά καταβάλλουμε τίς καλύτερες προσπάθειές μας νά τα εφοδιάσουμε μέ τά απαραίτητα μέσα πρός εκμάθηση, εφαρμογή καί άσκηση τής Ορθοδόξου Πίστεως. Οι Υπεύθυνοι τού Κατηχητικού, η Κα Αθανασία Ward και η Κα Δέσποινα Αφτοσμή μαζί μέ τό διδασκαλικό προσωπικό έχουν καταρτίσει τό καλύτερο πρόγραμμα γιά νά μάθητεύσουν τά παιδιά μας στίς αλήθειες τής πίστεώς μας. Ο αντικειμενικός σκοπός μας είναι νά διδάξωμε τήν πίστι καί νά μυήσουμε τούς μαθητές τού Κατηχητικού στόν Ορθόδοξο Χριστιανικό τρόπο ζωής. Μέ αυτό τόν τρόπο προσκαλούμε τόν Θεό νά πλάσει τούς χαρακτήρες κάθε μαθητού ώστε τα παιδιά μας να έχουν καλωσύνη, σεβασμό, τιμιότητα καί ακεραιότητα. Θέλουμε τά παιδιά τού Κατηχητικού νά αγαπούν τήν εργασία, τήν πειθαρχία, νά είναι υπεύθυνα στή ζωή τους νά μαθαίνουν καί νά ασκούνται στίς αρετές τής αγάπης, τής ταπείνωσης, τής υπακοής στον Θεό, στην Εκκλησία στούς νόμους τού κράτους και καθώς γνωρίζουν τά όρια γιά τόν εαυτόν τους ταυτόχρονα νά σέβονται τόν συνάνθρωπο στήν κοινωνία. Δημιουργούμε στήν τάξη τήν υπέροχη ατμόσφαιρα τής αδελφότητος, τής δεκτικότητος, τής εκτιμήσεως καί τής εμπιστοσύνης πού είναι απαραίτητοι συντελεστές πού μάς βοηθούν καί μάς στηρίζουν γιά τήν πνευματική μας ανοδική πορεία. Παρουσιάζομε τήν έμπιστη εικόνα ότι η Εκκλησία είναι μιά ΟΙΚΟΓΕΝΕΙΑ καί όλοι εμείς είμαστε μέλη αυτής τής ιδίας οικογενείας, είμαστε η οικογένεια τού Θεού, η οικογένεια τής Ενορίας τής Αγίας Τριάδος. Φροντίζομε ο ένας γιά τόν άλλον. Δέν έχουμε έχθρα, δέν κατηγορούμε, αλλά αγαπούμε, προσευχόμαστε καί βοηθούμε. Στηρίζουμε καί ανακουφίζουμε τούς αδελφούς μας, όπως ο Χριστός μάς εδίδαξε. Διδάσκουμε στά παιδιά μας ότι δέν θέλουμε νά τά δούμε στή ζωή αδιάφορα, τεμπέλικα, μέθυσα, ναρκωμανή, ανήθικα, απατεώνες, χαμένα, κ.λ.π. Αντιθέτως παρουσιάζομε καί συζητούμε μαζί τους προτεραιότητες, τήν σπουδαιότητα τού Θεού στή ζωή τους, τής Εκκλησίας, τής Πίστεως, τής Βίβλου, τών Αγίων, τής Οικογενείας, τής σταδιοδρομίας, τής ιερότητος τής ζωής, τών απασχολήσεών τους. Θέλουμε τά παιδιά μας νά αντιληφθούν καί νά δεχθούν από μάς τά σωστά μηνύματα καί τόν σωστό προσανατολισμό γιά μιά ζωή μέ τόν Χριστό ο Οποίος προσφέρει τήν αληθινή ζωή καί τόν γεμάτο νόημα προορισμό τής σωτηρίας. Οπως οι αετοί δέν μπορούν νά πετούν δίχως τίς δύο φτερούγες τους έτσι καί τά παιδιά μας δέν μπορούν νά πετάξουν πνευματικά δίχως τήν Κατηχητική διδασκαλία και την Μυστηριακή ζωή. Οπως τό τραίνο χρειάζεται τίς γραμμές πάνω στίς οποίες μόνο μπορεί νά κινείται έτσι καί τά παιδιά μας χρειάζονται τήν λατρεία, τό Κατηχητικό Σχολείο καί τήν θρησκευτική διδασκαλία σάν θεμέλιο καί υποδομή γιά νά προχωρούν στή ζωή επιτυχημένα και πνευματικά καί νά φθάσουν στόν προορισμό τους πού είναι η Βασιλεία τών Ουρανών. Στό Κατηχητικό θά μάθουν τό τρόπο ζωής πού ο Θεός θέλει νά έχουμε. Επί πλέον θά μάθουν ότι πολλές φορές στή ζωή μας υποφέρουμε πνευματικούς τραυματισμούς. Θά γνωρίζουν ότι υποφέρουμε πνευματικά από τίς αδυναμίες μας καί τίς πτώσεις μας στήν αμαρτία. Στό Κατηχητικό καθώς καί σέ άλλες πνευματικές ευκαιρίες διδάσκουμε τον τρόπο γιά να στρεφώμαστε στό Θεό μέ μετάνοια, πώς νά συμφιλιωνόμαστε, πώς νά εμπιστευόμαστε τήν Εκκλησία η οποία γίνεται τό πνευματικό ΝΟΣΟΚΟΜΕΙΟ πού θεραπεύει τίς πληγές καί αποκαθιστά τήν πνευματική μας υγεία. Μέ αυτές τίς σκέψεις θά ήθελα νά προσκαλέσω όλα τά παιδιά τής Κοινότητός μας νά συμμετέχουν γιά όλο τό έτος κανονικά κάθε Κυριακή στό Κατηχητικό Σχολείο, επειδή τά αγαπούμε καί μάς ενδιαφέρει τό σήμερα καί τό αύριο στή ζωή τους. Παρακαλούμε θερμά ο μαθητής νά πάει στό Κατηχητικό στήν τάξι πού ανήκει τήν Κυριακή τό πρωί. Τό μάθημα αρχίζει μετά την Θεία Κοινωνία καθώς τα παιδιά φεύγουν από την Εκκλησία αφού πάρουν το Αντίδωρο και πάνε για τις τάξεις τους. Θέλουμε τά παιδιά μας νά γνωρίζουν και μετά καθώς μεγαλώνουν νά μεταλαμπαδεύσουν καί νά διαιωνίσουν τήν Αγία Ορθόδοξη Πίστη πού είναι τό κληροδότημα τών Αγίων καί η δόξα τού Τριαδικού Θεού. Ας στηρίξουμε καί άς υποστηρίξουμε τό Κατηχητικό μας Σχολείο

4 THE SOURCE SEPTEMBER 2015 Page 4 όλοι μας γονείς, μαθητές, Συμβούλιο της Εκκλησίας, κληρικοί, διοικητικό προσωπικό καί δάσκαλοι Κατηχητικού, μεγάλοι καί μικροί. Αποτελεί ελπίδα μας καί προσευχή μας ο Μεγαλοδύναμος καί Ελεήμων Θεός νά ευλογήσει αυτές τίς ταπεινές προσπάθειες γιά νά ωφεληθούν τά ανεκτίμητα παιδιά μας καί οι νέοι μας καί γιά νά δούμε μιά καλύτερη κοινωνία γύρω μας. Παρακαλούμε νά βοηθήσουμε μέ κάθε ενθαρρυντικό τρόπο τήν Εκκλησία νά επιτύχει τόν σκοπό Της ώστε τα παιδιά μας να έχουν ένα καλύτερο σήμερα καί ένα λαμπρότερο αύριο. Παρακαλούμε πάλι βοηθήσετε νά έχουμε στό Κατηχητικό Σχολείο κάθε παιδί τής Κοινότητός μας καί μακάρι όλοι μας νά συμμετέχουμε στίς πνευματικές ευκαιρίες τής Εκκλησίας. Ευχαριστούμε. Like the traditional New Year, it can be a time of renewal, reflection and resolutions. For us, it marks a new beginning as it starts our first official year with Fr. Michael Varvarelis. I encourage you to start the New Year off right and come to church, on time, and get involved in a ministry in which you can apply your time and talent. Like Philip says to Nathaniel (John 1:45-46), Come and See. Each one of us is called to come and see what our Church can become. It takes the time and talent of ALL of us in order to realize the full potential of our Church. A financial contribution to the church is amplified when it is accompanied by our presence, by our willingness to serve, by our prayers, and by the commitment of our time and talent. There are so many exciting events, projects and ministries to get involved in our Festival, Greek School, Sunday School, Olympic Flames, GOYA, Choir, Chanting, Altar Servers, Parish Council, Philoptochos, Ahepa Just to name a few. I would also like to take this opportunity to thank the Building and Grounds committee of the Parish Council, chaired by Nick C. Mallios. The generosity of the late John Prokop and Freda Vladyka have enabled many improvements in our facility including the recently installed Air Conditioning and Heating system. Additional projects that are underway or planned include replacing carpets, installing marble on the Solea and upgrading our sound system. It is possible for young children to remain in church throughout a service if they are taught to be quiet and respectful. Many parishes have cry rooms or nurseries for those who are too small to be quiet throughout the whole Liturgy. Please be respectful to those around you if your child becomes fussy or out of control, and remove him from the nave of the church quickly. Breastfeeding mothers nee to be discreetly modest and, when necessary, us the available facilities such as a cry room for nursing. If in doubt, check with the parish priest for his recommendation. If a very young child needs a snack, please clear away any leftover pieces. However, the child should not have anything in his month when he comes to Holy Communion. It is not acceptable at any time to chew gum in church. It is never appropriate to allow a child to run down the aisles, play loudly, or carry toys that make noise. Plan to have your children use the restroom and get a drink before church begins, and don t allow them to come and go continually. Eventually, children will be able to spend longer times in the Liturgy. That is where they should be, but remember the reason for coming to church is to pray and worship. Considering bringing your children into the church at a time when the Liturgy is finished to practice church behavior. Teach them that they are visiting God s very special house, and they will need to have very special manners there.

7 THE SOURCE SEPTEMBER 2015 Page 7 VOTER ELIGIBILITY FOR PARISH COUNCIL ELECTIONS In order to be eligible to vote in the Parish Council Elections, an individual must be a member in good standing of the Parish, as defined in the Uniform Parish Regulations of the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America. In Chapter One, Article 18, Section 1, of these regulations, a parishioner in good standing is defined as: "Any person, eighteen years of age or over, who was baptized and chrismated according to the rites of the Orthodox Church and lives according to the tenets of the Orthodox faith." The Uniform Parish Regulations also provide that a member in good standing is one who has met his or her stewardship obligation to the Parish. Under Article VI, Section 1, of our Parish Bylaws, this stewardship obligation is defined as follows: "For purposes of voting in the annual election of Parish Council members, a parishioner in good standing is defined as any member of the Parish who submits a completed stewardship pledge card on or before the end of the Ecclesiastical Year, August 31, prior to the elections on the third Sunday in November of each calendar year." In addition, Article VI, Section 6, of the Parish Bylaws provides that "Absentee ballots shall be made available to parishioners who for physical or health reasons are unable to personally cast a ballot on the day of elections and who are otherwise able, competent, and eligible to vote." Requests for absentee ballots will be available in the church office. Please remember that if you do not turn in a pledge card, you are NOT eligible to vote in the Fall elections for Parish Council, NOR are you able to run as a candidate. August 31, 2015 is the deadline to submit your stewardship pledge card. Sunday School will begin on Sunday, September 13, We are happy to welcome back all the youth ages 2 years old as of September 1 st through 12 th grade. Classes begin after Holy Communion. All students will line up for Holy Communion and those not receiving Holy Communion will receive antidiron (blessed bread) and then go downstairs for class. The youth will have 30 minute classes and then will be dismissed as a group to the Social Hall for parents to pick-up. At the end of the program the students received their certificates as well as the Anastasia Vgontzas awards. We are divided into 3 groups: Beginners/Intermediates (1 st to 5 th grade), Juniors (6 th to 8 th grade) and Seniors (9 th to 12 th grade). Under the direction of our dedicated instructors the children learn dances from many different regions of Greece. Our group has performed at many local cultural events, our Diocese Dance Festival and annually at our Parish Festival. Our 2015/2016 Dance Year will begin on October 7 th at 7:00pm. Shared your most valuable of all resources with us in order that we may have yet another successful Festival. 2. Volunteered during the 3 days of the Festival. 3. Spent countless hours preparing all of our pastries, baked goods, dinners and food. 4. Helped clean up the eventual messes from baking, cooking and of course, hosting our annual Festival. 5. Watched our children, grandchildren, siblings, nieces, nephews and god children so we could volunteer to help. 6. Most importantly, our spouses who took on the brunt of many of us not being around to help with chores, running children to events or not being there for family meals. With our new school year starting on Wednesday, September 16th, I would like to take the opportunity to write this letter and urge you to make every effort to challenge your children by motivating them to attend our Greek Afternoon School to learn the richest language in the world, the mother of many languages, the language of their ancestors, the language of our Gospels, the language that has greatly influenced the western civilization, the Greek language. Research and several studies have shown that learning a second language and especially Greek will give children a competitive advantage for college and a valuable job skill in their career. Learning a second language is a life-long gift and provides children with: Higher scores on standardized tests Enhanced critical thinking skills Improved listening and broader vocabulary Increased competence in English Strengthened problem solving skills Greater creativity and higher-order thinking skills Heightened self concept and high levels of self- esteem Better understanding of own language and culture Receptivity toward other people, history and cultures Enhanced academic and career opportunities The English language can be characterized a Greek dialect. 35% of English words come from the Greek language and almost 90% in medicine. We can speak English using only Greek words as in the following sentences: MUSIC: The Orchestras electrified the atmosphere, with musical organs like the harp the lyre the aulos and hydraulos. The chorus in the odium or theatre synchronized with the organs harmoniously. The rhythm and harmonious eurythmy were unparalleled. Synthesis, synergy and symphony idealized every orchestrated episode. The magnetic atmosphere, the harmonic rhythm and the stereophonic... DRAMA-THEATER: The genesis of classical drama, was not symptomatic. A euphoria of charismatic and talented protagonists showed fantastic scenes of historic episodes. The prologue, the theme and the epilogue, comprised the trilogy of drama while synthesis, analysis and synopsis characterized the phraseology of the text. HISTORY: History has no parallel paradigm of a politician with character and charisma, like Pericles the Athenian, whose scholastic and stochastic dynamism, rhetoric, fantasy, energy and ideology characterized him as the ARCHITECT OF THE ATHENIAN DEMOCRACY. Give your children the opportunity and the pleasure to be with other Greek American children of our Hellenic Community, to pray and play together, to sing Greek songs and dance Greek traditional dances, to feel the love of our Church and be taught our unsurpassed Hellenic-Christian ideals. Στις 16 Σεπτεμβρίου αρχίζουν και πάλι τα μαθήματα στο Ελληνικό μας Σχολείο. Με την επιστολή μου αυτή θα ήθέλα να σας απευθύνω έκκληση να κάνετε φέτος κάθε δυνατή προσπάθεια να ενθαρρύνετε και να παρακινήσετε τα παιδιά σας να εγγραφούν στο Σχολείο μας για να μάθουν την πλουσιότερη γλώσσα του κόσμου, τη μητέρα πολλών γλωσσών, τη γλώσσα των Ευαγγελίων και των προγόνων μας, τη γλώσσα την Ελληνική. Και όχι μόνον! Να μυηθούν στις αξεπέραστες αξίες της ελληνορθόδοξης πίστεώς μας, του ελληνικού μας πολιτισμού και της ένδοξης ιστορίας μας, να μάθουν ελληνικούς χορούς και τραγούδια, να γιορτάζουν όλα μαζί τις μεγάλες εθνικές και ελληνορθόδοξες γιορτές μας και να αισθάνονται ιδιαίτερα υπερήφανα που είναι ελληνικής καταγωγής. Δώστε στα παιδιά σας την ευκαιρία και την ευχαρίστηση να είναι μαζί με τα άλλα ελληνοαμερικανόπουλα της ελληνικής μας κοινότητας, να προσεύχονται και να παίζουν μαζί, να τραγουδούν ελληνικά τραγούδια και να χορεύουν παραδοσιακούς χορούς, να ψέλνουν ύμνους στο Θεό μας, να αισθάνονται την αγάπη της Εκκλησίας μας και να διδάσκονται τα αξεπέραστα ελληνοχριστιανικά μας ιδεώδη.
