1 THE SOURCE April 2014 Issue # 4-14 HOLY TRINITY GREEK ORTHODOX CATHEDRAL CAMP HILL, PA Sundays with Names This April, all the Sundays have names. Another way of putting this is that our entire church year pivots around Pascha. So, the Sundays leading up to Lent, as well as those during Lent and the period of time from Pascha until Pentecost, have much the same shape and feel, or contour, from year to year. We have the same readings and themes every year on these Sundays. In fact, the services are so consistent, that the service books are pretty much standardized: We have the Lenten Triodion for pre-lent and Lent, the Holy Week book for the week before Pascha, and the Pentecostarion for the 50 days from Pascha (April 20 this year) until Pentecost (June 8 this year). Even so, there are minor changes each year because of what calendar dates these special Sundays fall on. For instance, the calendar determines the tone of the week. Our hymns have eight music tones (tones are sort of like Major and minor ) that we rotate through every eight weeks. Another thing the calendar shows us is which Saints we are to commemorate each day. Because of these changes, we have to re-do the weekly bulletins every year to reflect the dates on which each of the named Sundays falls. However, compared to Sunday bulletins for other times of the year, the changes are surprisingly small. Consistency in these Sundays is the rule. We also always follow the same order with these named Sundays. For April this year, we have them falling on these dates: April 6 St. Mary of Egypt April 13 Palm Sunday April 20 PASCHA!! April 27 Thomas Sunday Let s look at each one. April 6 is our last Sunday of Lent, and for it we are presented with St. Mary of Egypt. She was a notorious person in Alexandria, Egypt, who might be described in modern terms as a sexual predator and addict, in addition to being a prostitute. Outwardly, she was very beautiful, but her soul was full of rot. Even so, God loved her, and through a miracle she was brought to her senses and a deep feeling of repentance. The full story is beyond the scope of this article, but she made a truly radical change in her life, completely giving up her former lifestyle. After long years of prayer and fasting, she was granted forgiveness and great spiritual powers--despite her many, many previous sins. It is worth a few minutes with your favorite internet search engine to look up the story. Overall, I think the take-home message is that no one, no matter how sinful, is beyond redemption if they truly repent. If I may interrupt myself, an excellent book, Great Lent: Journey to Pascha, by Fr. Alexander Schmemann, describes repentance and confession as being much more than just a list or enumeration of sins. Rather, repentance and confession are about realizing just how estranged we are from God by our sins, and this should bring about tears of contrition and mourning. We are created for communion with God, so we should be sad that our sins prevent it. I m writing this in the first half of Lent and, even though I know it won t reach your home until Lent is nearly over, I still highly recommend the book. I am working my way through it again for the first time in probably 20 years, and finding it as valuable or even more so than I did the first time.

2 THE SOURCE APRIL 2014 Page 2 Back to our list of Sundays: April 13 will bring us to Palm Sunday. We find this event in Jesus life described in the Gospel of John 12: Jesus enters Jerusalem, and he is treated as the hero of the crowd. It is almost as if he is a hero returning from the wars, victorious. They even lay down their precious clothes most people might have had only one change of clothes back then to let this great hero s donkey walk over them. You can imagine that they picked up those clothes afterwards and were so proud that the great hero had walked over them. The triumphal spirit of the occasion is a huge contrast to what happened not long afterward: Jesus capture, trial, ascending the cross, and death. In fact, the service that evening (Bridegroom Matins) is extremely penitential, and a stark contrast to the joyous Palm Sunday liturgy we ve celebrated just hours before. The crowd s approval is fleeting and fickle. Let us enjoy the day and the brightness, but let us guard our souls so we don t turn against Jesus with our sins, like the crowd did in ancient Jerusalem. On Sunday they were calling hosannas to their King, and just a few days later they were shouting, Crucify Him! April 20 is Pascha. The church has 12 great feasts, but Pascha is not on that list. The Resurrection of the Lord is so important, it is beyond even that list of great feasts. It is the Feast of feasts! Over the last few years, I ve noticed a curious phenomenon: many people don t stay until the end of this amazing Pascha service. Some leave after their candle is lit, or shortly after, and never come back into the church. Others leave after receiving Holy Communion, but don t stay until the final amen. I know a few people have legitimate reasons for this, and I should not judge. But I m tempted to do so when the church, which was so full at the start, seems so empty at the end as we hand out the red eggs. Pascha remains Pascha, a victory over death, whether or not you fully participate. But, is it as transformative in your life if you don t? Perhaps if you took a nap Saturday evening (or the kids did), you could make it through to the end. Or perhaps if you brought a pillow for your child to take a bit of a nap in the service, the whole family would be able to stay. One parish I know ends up with lots of kids bedded down in the narthex and the back of the nave after everyone re-enters the church from the outdoor procession. The Paschal liturgy starts then, and the kids go to sleep until the parents wake them for Holy Communion. The kids are a little groggy as they approach the chalice, that is true; but at least the children s nap allows the parents to more fully participate. Even more importantly, it sends a message to the kids that it is okay to stretch a bit to reach a worthy goal. The children are happy because they, too, reached the goal. April 27 th is Thomas Sunday. See the Gospel of John 20: One of my professors in seminary said that it isn t fair that St. Thomas is called doubting Thomas. In John 20:25, St. Thomas says he won t believe in the resurrection of Jesus without physical evidence. But, a week later in verse 28, St. Thomas makes a confession of belief: My Lord and my God! So, perhaps we should call him believing Thomas instead! After St. Thomas shows his belief, Jesus says that those who have not seen, and yet believe anyway, are blessed. That s us, or at least most of us. I ve never seen the risen Lord, but some have. Maybe you have. Humans are very visual creatures: we have sayings such as, seeing is believing. Of course, we know that our senses can be deceived for instance, photographs have been manipulated in various ways since the beginning of photography. So, belief sometimes has to be more like a tenacious hope than some proof in a book about Euclid s geometry. Another thing to consider from the story of Thomas is the importance of putting yourself in the right place to receive a blessing. Thomas probably had some good reason for being absent that first time Jesus appeared to the disciples, and it probably was something the world would say is important. We can see, though, that the second time he was in the right place to see the Lord. Like Thomas, we should strive to be in the right place as often as we can be. Extra-Credit Question: May 4 th is the Sunday of the Holy Myrrhbearers. Frequently, icons of this group of saints show us only the women myrrhbearers the women who were bringing myrrh and other fragrant spices to the tomb to anoint Jesus body (which turned out not to be there!). However, a case can be made for including two men in the list. Who are they? Why are they also called Myrrhbearers? The answer will be in the next issue. Hint: See the Gospel of John Chapter 19, if you want to find out sooner. Until next time +Fr. Mark

6 THE SOURCE APRIL 2014 Page 6 PARISH COUNCIL Dear Parishioners, For the last 4+ years I have been on the Parish Council and have observed and participated in almost all of the events taking place at our cathedral. I have come to the conclusion that we are blessed to have so many talented and dedicated parishioners who are able to fill the different positions that are required for the vibrant programs of our church. I have established new relationships with the parishioners and I feel my life has been rewarded. I am very concerned that society has many demands for our attention and talents and is competing with the church for these. I encourage all the parishioners to evaluate their priorities and make the right decisions for themselves and their children. The priorities that you set for your children today will have a lasting influence on the rest of their lives. If you continually compromise attending church for sports, etc., most likely your child will be programmed to do the same. The habits you establish now will have a lasting effect. If you want your children to grow up in the Orthodox faith, you must participate, not only by attending services but also in the various programs. I encourage everyone that may not have participated in the past to take time and attend some of the meetings that occur almost daily at our church. Meetings that occur frequently are: the parish council (second Tuesday of every month), the festival, the 75 th anniversary booklet and Pentecost dance, the building committee and the stewardship committee, etc. I believe that you will be rewarded by your attendance and realize that a lot of people need to be involved to make things happen. During and after Great Lent, much of our attention will be geared toward the festival. It is a project that takes much time and commitment but in the end it is a fun project. Please come forth and contribute your time and talents to make the festival a success. The next Parish assembly is scheduled on April 27, Your presence will be appreciated. On behalf of the Parish Council I wish you Kali Sarakosti and Kalo Pascha. John Harbilas Parish Council President APRIL COFFEE HOUR Kathy C. We thank you in advance for your assistance in being prepared to give the gift of Life. Donating platelets vs blood for our parishioners: Platelets are used for all cancer patients since the disease destroys your platelets. Here is the process that usually takes an hour or so to complete: Automated Donation is similar to whole blood donation, but uses a machine to collect and separate blood during the donation process. The portion of the blood most needed by patients is collected and the remainder is returned to the donor. Automated donations allow us to collect different parts of the blood required for specialized treatment of critically ill patients. Anyone who is interested in donating can call HMC Donor center at , also the down time for donating platelets is every 4 weeks vs every 6 week for whole blood. Thanks for all your continued support!!!

10 THE SOURCE APRIL 2014 Page 10 PARISH ETIQUETTE Entering the Church: The Orthodox Divine Liturgy begins when the priest intones, Blessed is the Kingdom of the Father, and the Son, and the Holy Spirit. We need to arrive early enough to receive this blessing. Arriving later causes a distraction for others who are praying. If an occasional problem occurs and you have to come in late, enter the church reverently and quietly. The times in which you must stay in the back of the church, or the narthex, before entering include: When the Little or Grest Entrance is taking place, when the priest is censing the icons and congregation or giving the homily, and when the Epistle or Gospel is being read. If you are unsure when is the best time to enter the church, ask one of the ushers for guidance. We come to the church on time, as if to a great banquet, and with reverence, because we are partaking of the very Body and Blood of Christ, our Savior. Coming to Orthros or Matins before the Divine Liturgy will ensure that you will be settled in plenty of time to pray without distraction. Contact: *Ernie Winberg: *Tim Anneski: *Fr. 18 THE SOURCE APRIL 2014 Page 18 Special Speaker for Palm Sunday: Jesse Brandow (OCMC missionary) On April 13th (Palm Sunday), Jesse Brandow will give a special presentation to the parish about the explosive growth of Orthodoxy in Guatemala. Just four years ago, tens of thousands of people in Guatemala entered the Greek Orthodox Church under the Ecumenical Patriarch, and now these native Guatemalans are growing in the Orthodox faith and worshipping with the Divine Liturgy. Mr. Brandow will share their incredible story, describing how these people came into the Church and what challenges lie ahead for the growth of Orthodoxy in Guatemala. I want to invite everyone at Holy Trinity Cathedral to be inspired by this miracle, says Mr. Brandow, because God truly is at work in the lives of these newly-chrismated Guatemalans, just as God is at work right here and right now in our own families and communities. Glory to God! Jesse Brandow (center) with two Orthodox priests in Guatemala Jesse Brandow is a seminary graduate who studied at both St. Vladimir's Seminary and Holy Cross Greek Orthodox School of Theology. A Spanish speaker, he traveled to Guatemala to do short-term mission work in 2009 and Now he is preparing to return to Guatemala as a long-term missionary through the Orthodox Christian Missions Center (OCMC). He plans to live with the new Orthodox people of Guatemala on a year-round, full-time basis in order to help them learn and grow in the Orthodox faith. More than anything, Mr. Brandow is excited to share the miracle of Orthodoxy in Guatemala so that other people can be inspired. Thank you so much for inviting me to come to Holy Trinity, he says, I cannot wait to meet all of you and share this incredible story. Glory be to God for all the he is doing in your own parish community and also in the communities in Guatemala that have joined our Church as brothers and sisters. Thanks be to God!
