PALOS HEIGHTS, IL WWW. SAINT- SPYRIDON.ORG Hymn of Note In preparation for Great and Holy Lent, the Church gives us three weeks during which to reflect on the topic of repentance. On Meatfare Sunday, or otherwise known as the Sunday of the Last Judgment, the hymnology deals with repentance through the contemplation of the Lord s Second and Glorious Coming. One such hymn is our Hymn of Note for the month of February: I think upon that day and hour when we shall all stand bare, like men condemned, before the Judge who accepts no man s person. Then shall the trumpet sound aloud and the foundations of the earth shall quake, the dead shall rise from the tombs and all shall be gathered together from every generation. Then each man s secrets will be manifest before Thee: and those that have never repented shall weep and lament, departing to the outer fire; but with gladness and rejoicing the company of the righteous shall enter into the heavenly bridal chamber. While there is plenty of literature and even movies that deal with the end times, our church hymnography gives us a much clearer understanding on the issue. This hymn in particular teaches three solid lessons on how to view the life of the age to come. Athletics And what does the Lord require of you? To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God. The first lesson is simply that our Lord and Savior will return. In the Creed, we confess that He shall come again in glory to judge the living and the dead. In our Divine Services we pray that we may have a good account in front of the judgment seat of Christ. The event of the Second Coming should not be a surprise to us. We need to understand that one day we will stand in front of God, the angels, and all humanity, and be held accountable for what is stored in our heart. Another hymn of the day describes this scene very vividly: The Judge shall sit on His dreadful throne. The books shall be opened, and men s actions examined, and the secrets of darkness shall be made public...the Judge is come to pass sentence on all of the inhabited earth! And who shall bear to stand before His face in the presence of the angels, calling us to account for our actions and thoughts, by night or by day. Secondly, this hymn teaches about the sure hope of our future resurrection. One day, we shall all rise from the grave. The tombs that we call our final resting place will become nothing more that the gate unto life eternal. On that day, all generations will be gathered together, kings and soldiers, rich and poor, righteous and sinners. In the gospel reading from the funeral service, we read: The hour is coming in which all who are in graves will hear His voice and come forth (John 5:28). These are not empty words of polite consolation; they are the words of Jesus Christ, Who rose from the dead, and has the authority to promise us that we shall all see each other again in everlasting life. Finally, the manner in which we shall see each other again will be either in a resurrection of life or a resurrection of judgment. The difference between an eternal life of blessedness and an eternal sentence of condemnation however does not solely hinge on our sinfulness or virtue. After all, we are all sinful and we are all already condemned. Our virtues do not redeem us and our sins are indeed as numerous as the stars in the night sky. The path to heaven does not pass through self-justification or through our attempts to outweigh our sins by our good works. The path to heaven lies through the act of true repentance. Notice what the hymn says: And those that have never repented shall weep and lament. It does not say that those who are going to hell will do so on account of their sins. It says specifically that those who will weep in hell for eternity will do so simply because they never repented, they never accepted responsibility for their actions, they never sought to see the world through the eyes of our loving, forgiving and merciful Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. The music that accompanies this hymn is quite exquisite, and it just makes the words all the more powerful. Let us make haste and listen to this hymn on Meatfare Sunday, February 19 th, and pray that we may be counted among the people of repentance, the righteous and the saints, so that we may joyfully enter the heavenly bridal chamber and the blessedness of the eternal Kingdom of Heaven. 6 MISSION TEAM CHICAGO BENEFIT DINNER The 15th Annual Mission Team Chicago Benefit Dinner will take place on Thursday, February 16th, 2012, at 6:30 p.m. at St. John the Baptist Greek Orthodox Church in Des Plaines, IL. The dinner will feature keynote speaker, Metropolitan Savas of Pittsburgh and will benefit the Orthodox Christian Mission Center. Καλή Χρονιά! Just prior to Christmas break Cherubs had two very special visitors...santa and Mrs. Claus came to wish the children well and pass out presents! The kids were so excited! It was wonderful to see how happy they were. We started off 2012 with lots of fun activities already. We joined the kids at an in school field trip to watch a very special puppet show. Wow, how fun and amazing that was. We also gathered to cut our very own Cherubs vasilopita. Father joined us to bless it and cut it for us. The Cherubs program has grown so much and is stronger than ever. 7 GREEK DANCE SEMINAR On January 3rd our community hosted a Greek Dance Seminar. Many thanks to Mr. Alexandro Kaffezas, a dance instructor visiting from Greece who took the time and led the participants in many different parathosiaka dances and explained where they originate and the differences in steps and styles. P.T.A. NEWS Our Parent & Teacher Association held its monthly meeting on Saturday, January 14th. On January 19th, the P.T.A. held its artoclasia in honor of the feast of the Three Hierarchs, the patron saints of Greek Religious Education. Thank you to Mr. & Mrs. Gus Alikakos and Mrs. Maria Vassilakis for helping preparing the Artous. In the month of February, the P.T.A. is planning a School Spirit Day Hot Dog Monday, on Monday, February 13th. Wear your Plutarchos School T- shirt! We are also hosting an Open Gym Night on Friday, February 24th to treat our families to dinner and games. Donations are always welcome. The P.T.A. is planning its Greek Independence Day celebration on Sunday, March 25th, with a luncheon and festive program by our Greek School students and Greek Dancers. The P.T.A. is seeking volunteers and donors for the event. Finally, the P.T.A. is hosting this year s Metropolis Family Synaxis, on Saturday, March 17th. 8 COMMUNITY VASILOPITA CELEBRATION The annual Community Vasilopita celebration took place on Sunday, Jan. 8 th after the Divine Liturgy. Fr. Tilemahos honored all St. Spyridon organizations and ministries with a slice of Vasilopita. The winners of the special coin, flouri, were our Byzantine Music Students represented by Zaharias Chibucos. Dear Friends of Philoptochos, May the birth of our Lord bring many blessings to you and your loved ones and good health and happiness for the New Year! The Ladies Philoptochos Society of St. Spyridon started the New Year focusing again on charitable events and planning many philanthropic projects. One such event in January was the 52 nd Anniversary Vasilopita Celebration that took place at St. George in Schererville, IN. Fr. Tilemahos along with many of our members enjoyed the festivities and the camaraderie that took place with all the Parishes of our Metropolis. With your generous donations and love, we were able to give $1,000 dollars for the children of the St. Basil s Academy. 9 What fun we have been having at the Academy! As part of our Epiphany lesson Father Tilemahos performed a mock baptism for both our classes. We have had artificial snow in our water table, which is a big hit with the students. This past month we also completed our classroom books about our family and sent the manuscripts out to be published. A special thank you to Mrs. Demetra Mikroulis for all her hard work in getting our manuscripts ready in time for our publishing date. Our finished, printed and bound books should be delivered by the end of February and we are all very excited to see our finished product. 10 On December 31st, our community of Saint Spyridon hosted its New Year s Eve Celebration with great success. Over two hundred guests enjoyed delicious food, music and fellowship as they welcomed the new year Many thanks to Mr. Ted Georgiopoulos and his committee for organizing this events, to Mr. Kosta Alexopoulos for his generous support of the event, and all the donors and volunteers who made the evening a success. 11 NEW YEAR S EVE DINNER DANCE In celebration of Greek Letters in honor of the Three Hierarchs, Sts. Basil the Great, Gregory the Theologian, and John Chysostom, our Metropolis of Chicago organizes a series of events to mark the occasion. One such event was the Pansholiki, a gathering of all the Chicago area Greek Schools, each one presenting a unique short program in celebration of Greek Letters. This event was hosted by the parish of Sts. Constantine & Helen, Palos Hills, on Saturday, January 21st. Our Plutarchos Greek School was represented by our choir of students who sang three songs about different places in Greece. There was also a poem presentation on the topic of the Three Hierarchs. 13 LENTEN MEALS During the Great Lent period we will have Lenten Meals hosted by the different Parish organizations of our community. Each dinner is pot-luck and always delicious. We ask for the members of each organization to bring a lenten dish for the meal. The Lenten Meals will be held every Wednesday of Great Lent after the Presanctified Liturgy. All free will donations will benefit our Iconography Fund. Wednesday, April 6th Altar Boys Friday, April 6th Philoptochos Society Let us all come together for these Great Lent fellowship gatherings. FASTING DURING GREAT LENT Just as there are times for feasting, there are also times set aside for fasting. During the period of Great Lent certain foods are prohibited. These are meat (including poultry), dairy products, fish, olive oil and wine. Fruits, vegetables, grains and shellfish are permitted during the fast. Of course, the Orthodox Church never reduces the practice of fasting to a legalistic observance of dietary rules. Fasting, that is not accompanied by intensified prayer and acts of charity, inevitably becomes a source of pride. The Church also recognizes that not everyone can fast to the same degree, and assumes that individual Christians will observe the fast prescribed for them by their spiritual fathers. The following are guidelines for the Lenten Fast: From Clean Monday (February 27 th ) through the Friday before Lazarus Saturday (April 6 th ), meat, fish, dairy products, olive oil and wine are not permitted. Olive oil and wine are permitted on weekends. On the feasts of Annunciation and Palm Sunday, fish, wine and oil are permitted. Great and Holy Week, (April 9 th 14 th ) meat, fish, dairy products, olive oil and wine are not permitted. LENTEN TRIODION BEGINS FEBRUARY 5TH The Lenten Triodion is the service book of the Orthodox Church that provides the texts for the divine services for the pre-lenten weeks of preparation, Great Lent, and Holy Week. It is called the triodion because the canons appointed for Orthros during this period are composed of three odes each. The weeks of preparation, and especially the Sunday gospel readings, serve to exercise the mind, whereas the fasting of Great Lent focuses on the body, and Holy Week's services exercise the spirit. The Church eases us into the Lenten fasting discipline during this period. The week following the Sunday of the Publican and Pharisee is fast-free. The week following the Prodigal Son is a normal week -- we fast as usual on Wednesday and Friday. In the week following Meatfare Sunday, no meat is eaten; eggs, fish, and dairy are permitted on any day. Forgiveness Sunday brings the period of preparation to an end. The next day, Clean Monday begins Great Lent. The Vespers service served on the evening of Forgiveness Sunday includes the Rite of Mutual Forgiveness and is the first service of Great Lent.
