Summer is the prime time for vacation. Ideally, summer travel provides you with an opportunity to visit other Orthodox Churches. Doing so is a great way to enhance your faith experience. Other parishes can provide a fresh perspective and a chance to make new friends and renew old acquaintances. When I first joined the Orthodox church almost 25 years ago, the internet was not well developed and it was difficult to find parishes without a trip to a reference library that might have the phone book for the city I was going to visit. Later, a group called Orthodox People Together published a directory of Orthodox Churches covering the entire U.S.A. and I eagerly bought it and used it for trip planning. Now, it is easy to find a church almost no matter where you are going in the country. Perhaps the most comprehensive web directory of Orthodox Churches in the U.S. is: This directory has the ability to search by zip code and distance as well as by jurisdiction. There are also pages listing monastic communities. You may be asking, who or what is this assembly of bishops? A few years ago the mother churches of our jurisdictions in the U.S. blessed the local bishops to gather and work toward administrative unity in our country. This assembly includes about 50 Orthodox bishops from a variety of backgrounds. Archbishop Demetrius, as the senior representative of the Ecumenical Patriarch in the U.S. chairs the assembly, but some of the other officers are from other jurisdictions. Normally, Orthodox churches are organized along national lines regardless of the ethnic composition of particular parishes within that country. The Roman Catholics have proven this sort of thing can work: in one former coal mining town near Scranton there used to be four Roman Catholic churches in one town under one bishop despite the different backgrounds i.e. Polish, German, Italian, and Irish congregations all with different favorite saints, and favorite hymns and doubtless different cookies served in coffee hour. The differences between the different Orthodox jurisdictions or ethnic groups are similar to those of the Roman Catholics: we cherish our various backgrounds and may even celebrate services somewhat differently from one another, but our faith is the same.

2 THE SOURCE JUNE/JULY 2013 Page 2 Actually, several times lately I ve seen people say or write that nothing changes in Orthodox church services and that the practice in one parish is the same in the next. Well, that s not precisely true. There s always been room for diversity of practice, within reason, so long as we maintain unity of faith. I put within reason in the last sentence because change has to be treated cautiously because how we worship reflects and sometime affects how we believe. I like to think that the overall outline of the liturgy is sufficiently similar that if St. Basil the Great to somehow paid us a visit, he d feel comfortable with our worship even though he died in the year 379. A couple examples of the differences of practice: The Orthodox Wedding service is actually two services, a betrothal or engagement, followed by the crowning or wedding proper. In Greek practice both services are held in the front of the church on the solea. In Russian or Middle Eastern practices the engagement is done at the back of the church and only the crowning/wedding is done at the solea. Either is valid for a wedding in the Orthodox tradition. In Greek practice, the 40 day blessing of a baby and mother is done before the baptism, sometimes months and months before. Russians tend to do the 40 day blessing right AFTER the baptism! There are also differences in how holy week and liturgy is celebrated apart from languages used. And, monks tend to use different forms for Orthros/Matins, etc., than parishes do. Different monasteries follow different patterns emphasizing different saints etc. Enough about how we can be in agreement about faith but worship slightly differently and back to traveling this summer: Make church attendance part of your plan for your vacation. Use that directory. New parishes or missions are started all the time all over the country. There s even a great little parish at the beach town of Lewes, Delaware, which has a few Greeks among the congregation. It was started a few years ago by a retired priest as a retirement project! If you go, tell Fr. Boniface I sent you. They recently moved into a permanent building, I understand it is beautiful. When I was on vacation summer of 2011 they held liturgy in a rented hall nearby. Before you show up on Sunday morning it is polite to call/ the clergy where you are visiting and introduce yourself and confirm service times. Websites are not always up to date! Arrive early enough that you can introduce yourselves in person to the priest before you present yourself in the line for Holy Communion. That reminds me, in many parishes there s a custom that you go to confession every time before you receive Holy Communion. You should check on that when you call the priest and ask what he expects of you. This year our festival was not only blessed with good weather, but with volunteers that worked very hard and with a large community of customers. The end result was that we met and surpassed last year s figures. Special thanks to our Philoptochos ladies without whom the festival would not be what it is. They have always responded to the needs of our Church. A BIG, SINCERE, AND HEARTFELT THANKS TO ALL VOLUNTEERS WHO MADE THIS YEAR S FESTIVAL A SUCCESS. As you may have observed, our new book store has taken shape and was first used during the festival. Thanks to George Mallios for building it, to the Arcadians for their generous financial contribution, and to those who have actively assisted and are assisting with the related construction and furnishing. Jane Aftosmes ought to be congratulated and thanked for her years of tireless effort in making our Church book store a success. The next pressing thing in the near future is our Cathedral s 75 th Anniversary Commemorative Book. Please step up and participate in this worthwhile project. Think of this project as a part of our community s past but also future history! Some day your descendants will thank you for participating. We also anticipate that by early next month we will have signed a contract with the mechanical contractors to renovate a major portion of our Cathedral s heating and air-conditioning system. I feel that it is important that all parents encourage their children to participate in a religious opportunity this summer. It will pay dividends that will reward not only their lives but also yours. Often times we are busy taking our kids to soccer, baseball, etc - but we think twice when we are asked to involve our kids in things (like the Diocese Summer Camp or Vacation Church School) that teach our kids our culture and religion. Συγχαρητήρια σε όλους τους/τις ενορίτες που δούλεψαν σκληρά για την επιτυχία του φετινού πανηγυριού της εκκλησίας µας καθώς και σε όλους ενορίτες που επίσης ήλθαν και ξόδεψαν δικά τους χρήµατα αγοράζοντας φαγητά και γλυκά. Το φετινό πανηγύρι ευνοήθηκε όχι µόνο µε καλοκαιρία, αλλά και µε τους/τις εθελοντές που δούλεψαν πάρα πολύ σκληρά και µε µεγάλο αριθµό πελατών από την τοπική µας κοινότητα. Το τελικό αποτέλεσµα ήταν ότι φθάσαµε και ξεπεράσαµε τα επίπεδα µικτών εσόδων της προηγούµενης χρονιάς (2012). Ιδιαίτερες ευχαριστίες προς τις κυρίες της Φιλοπτώχου. Χωρίς την παρουσία τους το πανηγύρι δεν θα ήταν αυτό που είναι. Ευχαριστίες στον Γεώργιο Μάλλιο για την οικοδόµησή του, στον Σύλλογο Αρκάδων για την γενναιόδωρη χρηµατική τους εισφορά, και σε όλους και όλες οι που έχουν βοηθήσει και συνεχίζουν να συνεισφέρουν µε την σχετική οικοδόµηση κι επίπλωση. Επίσης συγχαρητήρια κι ευχαριστίες στην Τζαίην Αφτόσµη για τις ακούραστες και πολυετές προσπάθειές της οι οποίες έχουν συντείνει στην επιτυχία του βιβλιοπωλείου της εκκλησίας µας. Το επόµενο έργο στο κοντινό µέλλον είναι το Αναµνηστικό Βιβλίο για την 75 η Επέτειο της εκκλησίας µας. Παρακαλώ όπως συµµετάσχετε σ αυτήν την αξιόλογη δραστηριότητα. Σκεφθείτε την σαν ένα µέρος της παρελθούσης αλλά και µελλοντικής ιστορίας της κοινότητάς µας! Κάποια ηµέρα οι απόγονοί σας θα σας ευγνωµονούν γι αυτήν την συµµετοχή σας. Επίσης αναµένουµε ότι µέχρις τις αρχές του επόµενου µήνα θα έχουµε καταλήξει µε το απαραίτητο συµβόλαιο για την ανακαίνιση ενός µεγάλου µέρους του συστήµατος θερµανσηςκλιµατισµού του Καθεδρικού µας Ναού. Αισθάνοµαι ότι είναι σηµαντικό γιά όλους τους γονείς να ενθαρρύνουν την συµµετοχή των παιδιών τους σε προγράµµατα θρησκευτικής παιδείας αυτό το καλοκαίρι. Αυτή η συµµετοχή θα έχει σηµαντικό κι ωφέλιµο αντίκτυπο όχι µόνο στην δική τους ζωή αλλά και στην δική σας. Είµαστε λίαν απασχοληµένοι πηγαίνοντας τα παιδιά µας σε διάφορες εξωσχολικές δραστηριότητες όπως τα διάφορα αθλήµατα, κ.λ.π., αλλά το σκεφτόµαστε όταν µας ζητούν ν αναµίξουµε τα παιδιά µας σε προγράµµατα που έχουν να κάνουν µε την θρησκεία µας και την πολιτιστική ζωή και παράδοσή µας (όπως η θερινή κατασκήνωση της Μητρόπολής µας ή το θερινό πρόγραµµα του Κατηχητικού µας Σχολείου). Many thanks to those Philoptochos women who came and worked in the various booths during these days and those who came each week from early March to prepare all the pastries sold during the Festival. At the final Philoptochos chapter meeting of the year on May 28, a new Board of Directors was elected and will be installed by Father Kosta at the picnic gathering on June 4. A combined picnic of the Philoptochos Society and the Sts. Joachim & Anna Society will take place in the church Social Hall on Tuesday, June 4, at 5:30 pm STS. JOACHIM AND ANNA In place of a regular meeting in June, the Saints Joachim and Anna Society will join the Philoptochos Society in holding a picnic in the church Social Hall on Tuesday, June 4, at 5:30 pm. Membership in the Saints Joachim and Anna Society is open to all parishioners age 55 and over. For more information about membership, contact Mary Touloumes ( ) or Christ Zervanos ( ). CHURCH LENDING LIBRARY The church library contains information about Orthodoxy and Greece for you and your children. If you would like to borrow a book, sign the blue notebook, fill in name, date and name of book and when you return it, be sure to list the date you are returning it by your original sign in. Also, some of the books haven't been returned to our library; please check your books and return Holy Trinity's books for the use of your fellow parishioners. Thank you. ΒΑΠΤΙΣΕΙΣ Το Σαββατο 11 Μαιου βαπτιστηκε ο υιος του Μπραντλευ και Αλεξανδρας Κασµαν και ονοµαστηκε Κωνσταντινος απο τον νονο και νονα του Χαο και Βασιλικη Τρυονγκ. Την Κυριακη 26 Μαιου βαπτιστηκε στην εκκλησια µας η κορη του Περικλη και Ανδρονικης Παναγου και ονοµαστηκε Βασιλικη Σοφια απο τον νονο και νονα της Ευστρατιο και Ολιβια Φιλλιπη. Την Κυριακη 2 Ιουνιου βαπτιστηκε στην εκκλησια µας ο υιος του Γιωργου κια Τζενιφερς Σγαγια και ονοµαστηκε Μαξιµος Αλεξανδρος απο τον νονο και νονα του Χαραλαµπο και Λωρα Αραχωβα. ΓΑΜΟΙ Το Σαββατο 11 Μαιου παντρευτηκαν στην εκκλησια µας ο Γιωργος Μακκας και η Μια Μαυρου.Κουµπαρα ηταν η Κελλυ Κοτσατου. Το Σαββατο 25 Μαιου παντρευτηκαν στην εκκληαια µας ο Ιωαννης Ροµπερτ Καµπελλ και η Στασυ Ζοζου.Κουµπαρα ηταν η Ελευθερια Καραβαγγελου. Το Σαββατο 1 Ιουνιου παντρευτηκαν στην εκκλησια µας ο Χενοκ Γιακοµπ και η Ελενη Αντανοµ.Κουµπαρος ηταν ο Ησαιας Τεσφαµαικλ. Την Κυριακη 9 Ιουνιου παντρευτηκαν στην εκκλησια µας η Γουιλλιαµ- Μαικλ Τζωρτζ και η Αµυ Μαρια Χαρµπιλα. Κουµπαρα ηταν η Μαρινα Τριποδη.

ΠΡΟΓΡΑΜΜΑΤΑ ΝΕΟΛΑΙΑΣ ΧΟΠ & ΤΖΟΙ Στο φυλλαδιο του Αυγουστου θα εχουµε τα προγραµµατα και τις συγκεντρωσεις του Φθινοπωρου.Ευχοµαστε σε ολους Καλο καλοκαιρι! ΚΑΤΗΧΗΤΙΚΟ ΣΧΟΛΕΙΟ Χρειαζοµαστε δασκαλους για το Κατηχητικο Σχολειο το Φθινοπωρο. Αν ενδιαφερεστε να βοηθησετε επικοινωνειστε µε την Θενα Γουορντ ΚΟΙΝΟΤΙΚΗ ΖΩΗ ΦΙΛΟΠΤΩΧΟΣ Ευχαριστουµε ολες τις γυναικες της Φιλοπτωχου που βοηθησαν µε την ετοιµασια των φαγητων και γλυκισµατων για το Φεστιβαλ. Στην τελευταια συγκεντρωση που θα γινει στις 28 Μαιου θα εκλεγουν νεα µελη του Συµβουλιου και θα ανακοινωθουν στο πικ - νικ στις 4 Ιουνιου οπου θα συµµετεχει και ο συλλογος Ιωακειµ και Αννα. Το πικ νικ της Φιλοπτωχου θα γινει την Τριτη 4 Ιουνιου στις 5:30 µ.µ. στην αιθουσα της εκκλησιας. ΣΥΛΛΟΓΟΣ ΙΩΑΚΕΙΜ ΚΑΙ ΑΝΝΑ Αντι για συγκεντρωση τον Ιουνιο ο συλλογος θα λαβει µερος στο πικ νικ της Φιλοπτωχου που θα γινει την Τριτη 4 Ιουνιου στις 5:30 µ.µ. Ολοι οι ενοριτες ηλικιας 55 ετων και ανω µπορουν να γινουν µελη του συλλογου επικοινωνειστε µε την Μαιρη Τουλουµη η τον Χρηστο Ζερβανο ΒΙΒΒΛΙΟΘΗΚΗ ΤΗΣ ΕΚΚΛΗΣΙΑΣ Η βιβλιοθηκη της εκκλησιας µας περιεχει πολλα βιβλια σχετικα µε την Ορθοδοξια και την Ελλαδα.Εαν θελετε να δανειστειτε βιβλια απο την βιβλιοθηκη µπορειτε να υπογραψετε το ονοµα σας στο µπλε βιβλιο. ΒΙΒΛΙΟΠΩΛΕΙΟ Ευχαριστουµε ολους οσους προσφεραν χρηµατα και προσωπικη εργασια για την κατασκευη του βιβλιοπωλειου,την τοποθετιση βιβλιων, εικονων κι αλλων αντικειµενων για να ειναι διαθεσιµα στους ενοριτες. ιαθετουµε µονο ενα αντιτυπο του βιβλιου της Ηγουµενης Γαβριηλιας στα ελληνικα. Το βιβλιοπωλειο ειναι ανοιχτο καθε Κυριακη µετα την Θεια Λειτουργια.
