1 Greek Orthodox Church of the Annunciation 3022 F Street / Sacramento, CA / (916) Our mission is to bring all people to full maturity in Christ through Worship (Liturgia), Service (Diakonia), Education (Paideia), Witness (Martyria) and Fellowship (Koinonia), guided and united in all things by the One Holy Spirit. Choose Your BUSY-NESS Carefully Dear Parishioners and Friends of Annunciation, Are you busy, Father? Too often this is the first question parishioners ask me when they reach me at the church office. It s a loaded question. If I say, Yes, people are apt to think they are being overly intrusive and may be reluctant to call. No, of course would imply that I m not working hard enough. So, my canned response is, Yes, I am busy but I hope I am also being productive. There s quite a difference between the two, is there not? The world keeps us busy in pursuing myriad activities, including church-related ones. Take a look at our parish calendar and you ll see multiple activities nearly every day of the year. But is this a sign that our parish is spiritually healthy and productive? Not necessarily. We can program activities to keep us busy every day of the year, but they are all for naught if they fail to orient our spiritual lives in pursuit of the Kingdom of God. Thankfully, there is a special season of the year that literally forces us to get back to normal as a community of Orthodox Christians. This season is that special period of Great and Holy Lent, beginning Monday, March 2. The forty days prior to Holy Week and Pascha represent a tithe of the year with an intense focus on prayer, fasting and charitable works. So here is what I suggest we commit to do together this Great Lent: Regarding prayer Attend the Divine Liturgy every Sunday for six weeks, and arrive by 9:55 am! Attend one extra service per week for three of the six weeks. Extra Lenten services will be held Monday, Wednesday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday evenings. Regarding charitable works, pick an organization that our Philoptochos supports (there are literally dozens) and find out what you can do to help. 1 (Continued on Page 2)

Notice fasting is last, and for good reason. As important as fasting is for our spiritual health, it must be done in the context of prayer and caring for others. The former reminds us that without God we can do nothing, the latter that we are saved together and will be judged by what we do for one of the least of these my brethren. (Matthew 25.40) So my brothers and sisters in Christ, let s get busy this Great Lent. Let s help each other prepare properly and joyfully for the most important event (activity) of our lives, the celebration of Pascha. May you have a blessed Lent. Kali Sarakosti. 3 FROM THE PARISH COUNCIL PRESIDENT Many of you are probably wondering if the ADA improvements that we talked about most of last year are ever going to happen. Well, we now have the plans, the contractor and the permits to proceed. All we need now is to finance the project. The cost is several thousands and will include the handicap ramp into the hall and the ADA restroom. These will be very important additions not only for our own uses, but it will make the hall much more rentable. This is a significant asset for us and we can maximize its use with these improvements. We have received some generous donations form individuals and organizations and will certainly accept others to off-set the cost of these improvements. You may write a check to Orthodox Church of the Annunciation and indicate in the memo section that it is for the ADA Improvements. Dependable janitorial service is very important for the church complex. Over the past few months we have had the help of Dusty Wilson on a limited basis and she has done an excellent job. She is now leaving for another position and we have contracted with a professional janitorial service. They were highly recommended to us and the service started mid-february. It s my honor and privilege to serve this parish. Thanks to all for your support. Jerry Wright Parish Council President YOUTH DIRECTOR NEWS It has been a wonderful experience working for the Annunciation this past year and half. In my resignation, I would like to thank Fr. James and Fr. Tim for all their guidance and leadership. To the entire Annunciation staff it has been great working in the whirlwind office, and thanks for all the love and support. Thank you to all the families and kids who have supported our youth programs. The Annunciation Greek Church has been a wonderful experience with spiritual growth and blessed memories. The chance to be a part of the Guatemala mission team is a memory that I will never forget. This past FDF was beautiful by participating with the kids in prayer and congratulating them as they finished dancing. We had a great time supporting each other with love and encouragement. The love that I have for Sacramento will never leave my prayers and heart. Annunciation is blessed to have great leaders on the parish council, priests, and wonderful families. I will pray for all of you and please pray for Bethany and me. God Bless, Andrew Burrows 3

6 PHILOPTOCHOS NEWS We had a very successful Membership Brunch at the end of January. New members and returning members enjoyed a delicious Champaign Brunch on a very Spring-like Saturday. We plan on having a brunch again next January, so if you missed this one, you have another opportunity next year. Stewardship cards went out in early January and many have been returned. If you have not returned your pledge yet, why not do it now. We are a very active group of ladies and have a lot of fun when we get together to work on our projects. We could always use more help. Pick a project to help with and we will show you how we do it or what needs to be done. This year is an election year so we will be electing new officers and board members. February has been dedicated to the Kids-N- Cancer charity for several years. I would like to thank those who supported the fund drive this year held through the generous donations during coffee, the pancake breakfast, the cake raffle, and the tray passed in church. Please come to church for the Pan-Orthodox Vespers on the Sunday of Orthodoxy, March 8 th, followed by a Lenten Dinner prepared by the Philoptochos Ladies. We invite you to save the date of Saturday, May 16 th, for a Philoptochos Brunch. More information will be available at a later date, but mark your calendar now. Our Dial-a-Baklava pastry will again be available for Easter. For information or to order, call Helen at (916) Our March meeting will be Tuesday, March 3 rd after evening church service. I hope to see you there. Helen Grammatikakis, President PATRIARCH ATHENAGORAS ORTHODOX INSTITUTE What is the PAOI? Where is it and why should we be interested? The Patriarch Athenagoras Orthodox Institute (PAOI) in Berkeley invites all Orthodox college students during the regular academic year to attend Orthodox Christian Fellowship (OCF). Students worship in the St. Demetrios Chapel, share a Fellowship dinner and are welcome to join in a family style discussion. The OCF meetings are held every Tuesday evening at the PAOI headquarters which is located at 2311 Hearst Avenue, Berkeley, California (phone ). His Eminence Metropolitan Nikitas is the director of the Institute. The PAOI is an affiliate member of the Graduate Theological Union at Berkeley, California, with a special relationship to the University of California. The Institute exists to study and disseminate Orthodox thought and culture. It offers courses at the Graduate Theological Union through the Alexander G. Spanos Chair in Orthodox Studies. Since 2004 the Institute has offered a Master of Arts in Orthodox Christian Studies (a two-year degree). It is the only program in Orthodox theology outside of those offered by the Orthodox seminaries in the Eastern United States. By decision of the Holy and Venerable Synod of the Ecumenical Patriarchate, the Institute has been designated a Patriarchal Institute, ecclesiastically related to the Ecumenical Patriarchate. It is the only institution in the United States so designated. The Institute is an inter-orthodox endeavor, representing the diversity of Orthodoxy in America: Albanian, Antiochian, Bulgarian, Carpatho- Russian, Greek, OCA, Romanian, Serbian and Ukrainian. The Board of Trustees, comprised of members of the various Orthodox jurisdictions in America, presents a unified vision of Orthodox cooperation and witness. 9 SHIP NEWS Dear Fellow Parishioners: By the time this article is received we will be starting our journey through Great Lent. This is our chance for rebirth and a spiritual renewal that affords all of us great blessings. As faithful stewards of His church, it is important for all of us to avail ourselves of this opportunity by coming to church during this special Lenten time leading up to Pascha. I want to thank the over 250 families who have submitted their 2009 pledge cards to the church. That means, however, that we have yet to receive an indication of giving from over 400 families. Please consider what your best gift could be and return your stewardship card today to the church. Our church depends on all of us to allow for God s work to continue uninterrupted. 10 ANNUNCIATION MISSIONARY TEAM 2009 On January 20 th our team of nine Orthodox Christians led by Father James Retelas left for the Hogar de Rafael Ayau Orphanage in Guatemala. Me from St Anna; cousin Sam Manolakas, Despina Demas, Nitsa Dariotis, and Andrew Burrows from Annunciation; John & Erika Tatarakis from Elk Grove; and Anthony Aivalitois from the Portland parish. We met early in the month to prepare for the trip and were given an eye opening data dump of information. The Hogar (home) is located in the worse area of Guatemala City, immersed in an area full of poverty, drugs, and prostitution. The compound itself it surrounded by a thirty foot wall and is guarded with 24 hour paid security. Every business operation has paid security guard carrying an automatic rifle, from grocery stores to fine hotels to the common bank. You do not go out and walk around the city at night, and you do not wear jewelry or carry a purse when out during the day or night. Kidnappings for ransom are not unusual. All I could think about was that I hope Sam didn t share this reality with his Uncle Nick and Aunt Tootsie (my parents!). The grim surroundings of the Hogar are secondary once you get behind their gate. Almost instantly you become aware of an amazingly well managed and structured environment of smiling, grateful and obedient children, all in great health and smelling freshly of Irish Spring soap. They are lovingly attended to by a paid staff of teachers, nannies, bakers and cooks, and office management. Everywhere you walk you are greeted with loving kindness and find yourself in hug heaven. There is so much joy at the Hogar it is infectious and your heart feels like it can burst. The first day we are given a tour of the facility and our reality becomes a feeling of full admiration for a small group of nuns who educate, spiritually guide, and care for about 70 children from ages almost one to high school grades. On any given day they obtain fresh food donations, manage a staff of about 12 to 15, run a scholastic program, obtain university scholarships for their graduates, communicate medical needs to a core of various doctors, attend to the children s health needs, and manage the boarding the older boys in a separate facility (so that the combination of high school girls and boys in the height of adolescence doesn t cause predictable problems). This is going on while hosting the visits of missionaries every other week from various Orthodox communities. The how can be seen as astonishing and is definably exhausting, but as Madre Yvonne explains, is just somewhat simple as this: We begin the day with prayer and end the day with prayer, and everything else falls in line. They have many expenses and many needs. And all of this is humbly and faithfully given to God to handle. When things do work out, it is nothing short of miraculous. The week went by quickly. We blended into their needs with the tasks of intense yard work led by the chainsaw yielding Mono Andreas (the kids nicknamed him monkey because of his tree climbing talents) and power washing the city grime off their walls, to sitting in the nursery hugging 4 to 5 crawling babies at a time. Madre Yvonne told us hugging the babies was one of the most important things we could do since they did 10

11 not receive much one on one time. When you go into the nursery to play with the babies they swarm you like a litter of puppies, four or five at one time jockeying for attention. They want to play, be tickled, hugged, and rocked to sleep. One of the biggest highlights of the trip was during Divine Liturgy when the older kids called us to leave the service at the Lord s Prayer, come to the nursery, and help carry the babies over to Church for Communion. I couldn t believe how all these little babies, who were not so fortunate to attend Liturgy regularly, seemed to know the depth of their participation and received Holy Communion so quietly and willingly. I felt like I was in the company of angels. In summary, the missionaries paid for their own airfare and expenses and through the generous donations of others were able to donate a total of $14,000 (from all three Sacramento parishes). We also carried several duffle bags of clothing, books, art supplies, medicines, various toiletries, and a huge amount of toothbrushes and toothpaste! While the nuns can make $1 go a long way, they always have a lot of expenses associated with the care of so many children. The likelihood of a Hogar children being adopted by good Orthodox homes has diminished tremendously since UNICEF paid off government officials to close the orphanage adoptions and filter them through government controlled agencies. Money the root of all evil. In 2006 there were 5000 adoptions in Guatemala; in 2007 the number fell to Last year there were only 27 children placed in homes from Guatemalan orphanages. They have a huge struggle ahead of them to manage the influx of needy children off the streets. Additionally, the Hogar struggles with the filth (literally and figuratively) of their surrounding area and are working hard to move the children to the new facility under construction on the property of the Monastery outside of town. They are about $250,000 away from completion. As Madre Yvonne tells us it is very complicated right now, but we pray and it is up to God. I pray the children can move soon, that someone finds a way to shed light on the evils of the government control over Guatemalan adoptions to reverse their actions, and that the many children find their way into the arms of good loving families. In the meantime, this Hogar loves and cares for as many as they can. May I be so blessed to return next year to offer more hugs and hard work to this unique family of God. In Christ, Pinkie (Cynthia Sheffer) If you d like to view pictures from our trip go to: 11

Becky Yerocostas 12 Saint of the Month St. Christodulus the Wonderworker of Patmos Celebrated on March 16 Reading: Saint Christodulus, who was from the region of Nicaea of Bithynia, was the son of Theodore and Anna, and was given the name John. He assumed the monastic habit in his youth and was renamed Christodulus ("slave of Christ" in Greek). At first, he lived the ascetical life in various places, then he received permission and monetary aid from the Emperor Alexis I Comnenus (reigned ), and built on the island of Patmos a church and monastery named in honour of Saint John the Evangelist. These buildings stand to this day. However, when the Arabs attacked that place, he fled with his disciples and went to Euboia (Euripus), where also he completed the course of his life about the end of the eleventh century on the 16th of March. The disciples of this righteous man took his sacred incorrupt remains and transferred them to his own monastery, where they repose to this day for the sanctification of those who have recourse to them with faith. 13 BOOKNOTES: The Shack Booknotes very rarely discuses works that are not Orthodox because the Bookstore only carries Orthodox materials. However, because so many of our parishioners are reading and sharing the book, The Shack, by William P. Young, we will discuss The Shack. Before going on it should be stated up front that while this is an undeniably powerful, gripping and compelling book, it is not Orthodox. For instance, Antiochian Archpriest, author, commentator, Fr. Lawrence Farley strongly states that The Shack is heretical in it s treatment of the Holy Trinity. It should be noted that Fr. Farley is a highly respected prolific writer of, and commentator on, Orthodox works. The Bookstore carries many of his books such as The Prison Epistles, The Gospel of Mark:The Suffering Servant, Let Us Attend and many others. Fr. Farley is not one to use the word heretical lightly. Other criticisms of The Shack call the book New Age-y, say it is based on eastern religious philosophies such as Hinduism, Buddhism, Judaism etc., not Orthodoxy. Some go so far as to say The Shack is anything but Christian, that it is more universalist in nature. The story itself is gripping. The Mackenzie family is struck by the tragedy of their youngest member being abducted and murdered on what was otherwise expected to be a perfect ending to a wonderful summer; a final summer outing at a shack on a beautiful lake. The only remnant of Missy to be found was a bloody dress. Young describes sadness and depression in a way that only someone who has experienced it can possibly describe such emotions. A couple of years later Mack, the father of the child, receives a note signed by Papa, a euphemism for God known to be used only in his family. The note asked Mack to meet at the Shack again on a Labor Day weekend. Mack thought someone was playing a cruel, sick, joke. Or, his mind wondered, could this somehow really be a note from God Himself? He went to the Shack. God in the form of the Holy Trinity acting in three distinct beings, tries to show Mack His/Their love and help him heal and to lead him to his daughter s remains. The story doesn t end there. The ending is really unexpected and not anti-climactic but I ve told you enough. In light of the criticism noted above, I am embarrassed to admit that I thoroughly enjoyed the book but I urge caution in reading it. I too am uncomfortable with the treatment of the Holy Trinity. God the Father is depicted as a large Black woman named Papa, because He said He did not want to be stereotyped. Jesus is treated lightly as sort of a handyman with a tool belt, cavorting, with the protagonist Mack, walking on water across a lake. The Holy Spirit reminded me of Tinker Bell in Peter Pan. There was another sprite like figure in the story who was supposed to be Wisdom. However, the book is compelling because, again, while it is most Un-Orthodox, it depicts how God can reach down even into the darkest recesses of a person s heart and touch you with His Love; how God can bring you out of murkiness so suffocating and heal what we humans feel like is un-healable devastations in our lives. The author, William Young, who experienced horrible traumas in his own life, hints at answering why it is that God doesn t step in and prevent tragedies in our lives. This book reaches readers in their own personal tender spot and encourages a personal relationship with God. For that reason I recommend reading the The Shack, but do so being conscious of your Orthodox teachings and remember that this is a work of fiction. Enjoy it. It is a good read. 16 From The Metropolis Youth Director Real Life, not Real World By Deacon Niko Bekris Recently I walked into a room where a relative of mine was watching a reality TV show, something that s not uncommon these days, as you know. It was about a very dysfunctional family with six kids, one of whom is a model for various trashy magazines, loves glamour and fame and dates a popular football star named Reggie Bush. The setup of the show is along the same lines as MTV s Real World, Life of Ryan, and other reality shows, typically, celebrity reality shows. You ve probably heard someone at school or work talk about it. If you don t know about the show, it s called Keeping up with the Kardashians, and shows like it are all over American television these days- reality television. I m not sure just how much TV you watch, or what channels are your favorites, but I m almost positive that a big part of most people s weekly television diet these days includes reality TV. Frequently in these shows, the main characters talk about their hopes and dreams- Kim Kardashian wants to break into show business, be popular, and be loved. The Bachelorette last season wanted to find her dream husband. In shows like these, you have relationships, rivalries, competition, all characters talking about their personal lives, and where they hope to go in life. We get wrapped up in these shows so easily, because we identify with not fictional, but real characters, whose goals in life we often share. My question to you is this: when these people talk about what they want to do with their lives, what do they use as their guide, their compass? How often do you hear these people say, This would make me happy, or I just 16 really want this? In so many episodes of these shows that I ve run across, it seems that these characters are driven by What do I want, or what makes me feel good/accepted/popular? Of course there s nothing wrong with this by itself, because we all have different dreams and things that make us happy. But if being happy is the only compass that we use in our lives, then often we re going to find ourselves at points in our lives where we don t know where we re going. For example, the Kardashian family is always fighting; the bachelorette divorced her husband just a few months after she picked to marry him, and how often do people in Real World, Survivor, and other shows get mad and hate each other, curse each other out, sleep together, etc? Before we know it, we re watching a show that has nothing to do with what really makes our life meaningful and gives us an awful example of how to go about our lives. What gives our life true meaning is not only following what we think our heart wants or whatever makes us happy, but also finding where God wants us to go. How God wants us to live our lives and where he wants us to go is the greatest, most fulfilling way we can live our lives. It is not restricting or just a set of rules the Bible tells us to follow- this is the greatest freedom, greatest compass we can have in life. What God wants for us is also what s best for us and what makes us the most happy we can be. How many people in reality TV shows do you hear saying I think this is what God wants me to do? Probably not many. In the book of Proverbs, there is a verse where God says Blessed are they who keep my ways, and in some translations, Happy are they. (8:32) If you apply this to your life, I know you will find this to be the truth. Let us use this freedom, too, as a filter when we watch any entertainment on TV or any pop culture. Try reading your Bible, a little at a time, with your priest as your guide, and opening your mind and heart to God s example for us, not reality television s example. By keeping His ways, you won t have to worry about keeping up with the Kardashians. Answers to Orthodoxy 101 from page 14 1,B; 2,C; 3,A; 4,B; 5, B

Immediately upon his election, Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew sent a congratulatory telegram. The message of Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew reads, in part: On the occasion of your well-deserved election today as the new Head of the most holy sister and chosen daughter Russian Church, we convey to you our heartfelt brotherly salutation, both of the Ecumenical Patriarchate of Constantinople and of our Modesty. We are certain that in the course of Your Patriarchy, which we pray will be long and glorious, we shall work together in harmony for the glory of God and for the shared witness of Orthodoxy in our contemporary troubled world. I look forward to continuing our cooperative efforts with the Representation of the Moscow Patriarchate in the USA. With God s help and by His grace, we shall enjoy new opportunities to expand the message of the Gospel and affirm our unity in Christ.
