1. Διαισθητική: this strategy is mainly used by younger and inexperienced estimators and can reinforce the belief that approximate answers can be valuable. For example, a student may respond that the average of 3, 5, 8 and 10 is about 6, but he cannot justify his answer.. Μπορούμε να διακρίνουμε δύο τύπους στρογγυλοποίησης: Στρογγυλοποίηση με κανόνα: the rounding here is based on the well-known rule. We determine what the rounding digit is and check the digit on the right of it. If it's equal or greater than 5, the rounding digit is increased by one. In contrast, if it is less than 5, then the rounding digit is reduced by one. Στρογγυλοποίηση που βασίζεται στην κατάσταση: takes into account the context of the arithmetic problem and a specific situation of calculation. Note that it is not necessary nor desirable the attachment to the rule of rounding. Instead, the rounding process must be flexible and be done in many different ways, to facilitate the mental calculation (Reys, 1984; Reys, 1986). For example, for the product 65x3 the roundings 60x0, 70x0 or 70x3 are all acceptable. 3. For example, is computed the sum of the integer parts (front end) = 880, then it can become an arrangement by summing decimal parties and about one of the other two numbers, so in total we have Κουτσούρεμα: this strategy is in the same logic with the previous strategy, based on the relative size of the numbers and the place value of the front digit. In the number truncated the front digit or digits (with the greater place value) stay the same, while the remaining numbers (to the right) are converted to zeros. For example, 5,68 may be converted to 5,000, 5,600 or 5,680. The selection of the position of the truncation is selected depending on the situation of calculation. 5. Συσσώρευση ή Μέσος όρος: this special strategy is applied in addition of multiple numbers, when these numbers are nearby to a specific price. For example, can be calculated as 4x0 = 80). 6. Αντιστάθμιση: we can distinguish two types of compensation, prior and post compensation.
Προγενέστερη αντιστάθμιση: the second term is rounded in the opposite direction from the first, before any operation. For example, in 57x56, 56 may become 50 instead of 60, to compensate the rounding of 57 to 60, so 60x50 = 3,000, while 60x60 = 3,600, which is further away from the exact result 3,19. Μεταγενέστερη αντιστάθμιση: Post compensation is also encountered in the literature as adjusting strategy (Reys, 1984) and is a process that is applied after the use of a computational estimation strategy to correct the initial estimation, when greater accuracy is desired. For example, 57x56 60x60 = 3,600, we subtract 3x60 = 180 and 4x60 = 40, so we remove about 400 of 3,600 and we found 3, Στρατηγική συμβατών αριθμών: this strategy involves the selection of numbers which make an estimation easier and give a good estimate of the original problem. For example, in the sum , is about 100, is approximately 100 and is approximately 100. So, the sum is approximately 300. These pairs of numbers are "compatible". 8. Στρατηγική ειδικών αριθμών ή Σημεία αναφοράς: in many cases, students are trained to distinguish the numbers which are close to special prices. This happens with fractions, where specific values are 0, 1 and 1. For example, in the sum , can be regarded as 1, 1 7 can be regarded as 0 and can be 5 13 regarded as 1. So the total is approximately Αλλαγή μορφής ενός αριθμού or αντικατάσταση: changing the form of one or two numbers, to generate an easier calculation (e.g., the operation 0.5 x0.35 may be converted to 1 x 1 3 ). 10. Εύρος: students use this strategy to calculate the range into which the answer to a calculation is expected to fall. For example, the answer of.6x7 is expected to be between 14 and 1, the lower limit of x7 =14 and the upper limit of 3x7 = Παραγοντοποίηση: analysing the numbers to have a simpler form. For example, 18x15 is 130x10x Επιμεριστικότητα: using distributivity. For example, in 38x91 we can have (38x100) - (38x10) = 3, is approximately 3, Με αλγοριθμικό τρόπο: use of an algorithm to make the calculation approximately and then to calculate the answer. For example, 8.3x11. can be calculated like 8x11=88 and add 0.x8=1.6 and 0.3x11=3.3 so it will be approximately 88+5 = 93.
