Saints Constantine and Helen G r e e k O r t h o d o x C h u r c h of Washington, DC Sunday of the Prodigal Son February 28, 2016 PLEASE JOIN US THIS EVENING!!

MISSION STATEMENT The Sts. Constantine and Helen Greek Orthodox Church of Washington DC's mission is to energize, cultivate and guide its faithful by proclaiming the Faith and Gospel of Christ, and teaching and spreading the Orthodox Christian Faith. There are more people on this planet outside the Church than inside it. Millions have been baptized, millions have not. Millions participate in the celebration of the Lord s Supper, but millions do not. The Church as the body of Christ, as Christ living in the world, has a larger task than to support, nurture, and guide its own members. It is also called to be a witness for the love of God made visible in Jesus. Before his death Jesus prayed for his followers, "As you sent me into the world, I have sent them into the world" (John 17:18). Part of the essence of being the Church is being a living witness for Christ in the world HOW TO FOLLOW THE CHURCH SERVICES ON YOUR SMART PHONE/IPAD Step 1: Open your smart phone/ipad. 3 YMNOI THΣ ΗΜΕΡΑΣ HYMNS OF THE DAY Ἀπολυτίκιον Ἀναστάσιμον/Ἦ χος πλ. βʹ. Aπολυτίκιον Αγ. Aπολυτίκιον Αγ. Resurrectional Apolytikion/Mode pl. 2 When the angelic powers appeared at Your grave, the soldiers guarding it feared and became as dead. And standing by the sepulcher was Mary who was seeking Your immaculate body. You devastated Hades, not afflicted by it. You went to meet the virgin, and granted eternal life. You resurrected from the dead. O Lord, glory to You. Apolytikion of Sts. Constantine & Helen Having seen the image of Thy Cross in Heaven, and like Paul, having received the call not from men, Thine apostle among kings entrusted the commonwealth to Thy hand, O Lord. Keep us always in peace, by the intercessions of the Theotokos, O only Friend of man. Apolytikion of St. Andrew As first of the Apostles to be called, O Andrew, brother of him (Peter) who was foremost, beseech the Master of all to grant the world peace and our souls great mercy. Kontakion/Mode 3. On this day. I revolted senselessly * out of Your fatherly glory; * I have squandered sinfully * all of the riches You gave me.* Hence to You, using the Prodigal's words, I cry out,* I have sinned before You, merciful loving Father.* O receive me in repentance, * I pray, and treat me * as one of Your hired hands. 3

ΤΗΕ EPISTLE St. Paul's First Letter to the Corinthians 6:12-20 Brethren, "all things are lawful for me," but not all things are helpful. "All things are lawful for me," but I will not be enslaved by anything. "Food is meant for the stomach and the stomach for food" -- and God will destroy both one and the other. The body is not meant for immorality, but for the Lord, and the Lord for the body. And God raised the Lord and will also raise us up by his power. Do you not know that your bodies are members of Christ? Shall I therefore take the members of Christ and make them members of a prostitute? Never! Do you not know that he who joins himself to a prostitute becomes one body with her? For, as it is written, "The two shall become one flesh." But he who is united to the Lord becomes one spirit with him. Shun immorality. Every other sin which a man commits is outside the body; but the immoral man sins against his own body. Do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit within you, which you have from God? You are not your own; you were bought with a price. So glorify God in your body and in your spirit which belong to God. 4

THΕ GOSPEL Luke 15:11-32 The Lord said this parable: "There was a man who had two sons; and the younger of them said to his father, 'Father, give me the share of the property that falls to me.' And he divided his living between them. Not many days later, the younger son gathered all he had and took his journey into a far country, and there he squandered his property in loose living. And when he had spent everything, a great famine arose in that country, and he began to be in want. So he went and joined himself to one of the citizens of that country, who sent him into his fields to feed swine. And he would gladly have fed on the pods that the swine ate; and no one gave him anything. But when he came to himself he said, 'How many of my father's hired servants have bread enough and to spare, but I perish here with hunger! I will arise and go to my father, and I will say to him, 'Father, I have sinned against heaven and before you; I am no longer worthy to be called your son; treat me as one of your hired servants.' And he arose and came to his father. But while he was yet at a distance, his father saw him and had compassion, and ran and embraced him and kissed him. And the son said to him, 'Father, I have sinned against heaven and before you; I am no longer worthy to be called your son.' But the father said to his servants, 'Bring quickly the best robe, and put it on him; and put a ring on his hand, and shoes on his feet; and bring the fatted calf and kill it, and let us eat and make merry; for this my son was dead, and is alive again; he was lost, and is found.' And they began to make merry. Now his elder son was in the field; and as he came and drew near to the house, he heard music and dancing. And he called one of the servants and asked what this meant. And he said to him, 'Your brother has come, and your father has killed the fatted calf, because he has received him safe and sound.' But he was angry and refused to go in. His father came out and entreated him, but he answered his father, 'Lo, these many years I have served you, and I never disobeyed your command; yet you never gave me a kid, that I might make merry with my friends. But when this son of yours came, who has devoured your living with harlots, you killed for him the fatted calf!' And he said to him, 'Son, you are always with me, and all that is mine is yours. It was fitting to make merry and be glad, for this your brother was dead, and is alive; he was lost, and is found.'" 6

The Nicene Creed I believe in one God, Father Almighty, Creator of heaven and earth and of all things visible and invisible. And in one Lord Jesus Christ, the only-begotten Son of God, begotten of the Father before all ages. Light of Light, true God of true God, begotten not created, of one essence with the Father through Whom all things were made. Who for us men and for our salvation came down from heaven and was incarnate of the Holy Spirit and the Virgin Mary and became man. He was crucified for us under Pontius Pilate. He suffered and was buried. And He rose on the third day, according to the Scriptures. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. And He will come again with glory to judge the living and dead. His kingdom shall have no end. And in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the Creator of life, Who proceeds from the Father, Who together with the Father and the Son is worshipped and glorified, Who spoke through the prophets. In one, holy, catholic, and apostolic Church. I confess one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. I look for the resurrection of the dead and the life of the age to come. Amen. The Lord s Prayer Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name. Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one.

PRAYERS BEFORE HOLY COMMUNION I believe, Lord, and I confess, that You are truly the Christ, the Son of the living God, Who came into the world to save sinners, of whom I am the first. Moreover, I believe that this is Your immaculate Body, and that this is Your precious Blood. Wherefore, I pray to You: have mercy on me, and forgive me my transgressions, those voluntary and involuntary, those in word, those in deed, those in knowledge and those in ignorance; and make me worthy to partake of Your immaculate Mysteries without condemnation, for the remission of sins and life everlasting. Amen. Behold, I approach for divine Communion; Creator, burn me not as I partake; For You are Fire, which burns the unworthy. But, rather, cleanse me from every impurity. Of Your Mystical Supper, Son of God, receive me today as a communicant; for I will not speak of the Mystery to Your enemies; nor will I give You a kiss, as did Judas, but like the thief I confess You: Remember me, Lord, when You come into Your Kingdom! Be awe-stricken, O man, beholding the deifying Blood; For it is a lighted Coal that burns the unworthy. The divine Body both deifies and nourishes me; It deifies the spirit, and wondrously nourishes the mind. You have smitten me with yearning, O Christ, and by Your divine zeal You have changed me; but burn away my sins with immaterial Fire, and make me worthy to be filled with delight in You; that, leaping for joy, O good One, I may magnify Your two comings. Into the brilliant company of Your saints, how shall I the unworthy enter? For if I dare to enter into the bridal chamber, my garment betrays me, for it is not a wedding garment, and I shall be bound and cast out by the Angels; Lord, cleanse my soul of pollution, and save me, for You love mankind. Master, Who loves mankind, Lord Jesus Christ my God, do not let these Holy Things be to me for judgment because of my unworthiness, but rather may they be for the purification and sanctification of soul and body, and as a pledge of the life and Kingdom to come. For it is good for me to cleave to God, to put my hope of salvation in the Lord. Of Your Mystical Supper, Son of God, receive me today as a communicant; for I will not speak of the Mystery to Your enemies; nor will I give You a kiss, as did Judas, but like the thief I confess You: Remember me, Lord, when You come into Your Kingdom! Remember me, Master, when You come into Your Kingdom! Remember me, Holy One, when You come into Your Kingdom! 8

12 SAINTS AND FEASTS Basil the Confessor Saints Procopius and Basil, fellow ascetics, lived about the middle of the eighth century, during the reign of Leo the Isaurian ( ), from whom they suffered many things for the sake of the veneration of the holy icons. They ended their lives in the ascetical discipline. Righteous John Cassian the Confessor This Saint was born about the year 350, and was, according to some, from Rome, according to others, from Dacia Pontica (Dobrogea in present-day Romania). He was a learned man who had first served in the military. Later, he forsook this life and became a monk in Bethlehem with his friend and fellow-ascetic, Germanus of Dacia Pontica, whose memory is also celebrated today. Hearing the fame of the great Fathers of Scete, they went to Egypt about the year 390; their meetings with the famous monks of Scete are recorded in Saint John's Conferences. In the year 403 they went to Constantinople, where Cassian was ordained deacon by Saint John Chrysostom; after the exile of Saint Chrysostom, Saints Cassian and Germanus went to Rome with letters to Pope Innocent I in defence of the exiled Archbishop of Constantinople. There Saint Cassian was ordained priest, after which he went to Marseilles, where he established the famous monastery of Saint Victor. He reposed in peace about the year 433. The last of his writings was On the Incarnation of the Lord, Against Nestorius, written in 430 at the request of Leo, the Archdeacon of Pope Celestine. In this work he was the first to show the spiritual kinship between Pelagianism, which taught that Christ was a mere man who without the help of God had avoided sin, and that it was possible for man to overcome sin by his own efforts; and Nestorianism, which taught that Christ was a mere man used as an instrument by the Son of God, but was not God become man; and indeed, when Nestorius first became Patriarch of Constantinople in 428, he made much show of persecuting the heretics, with the exception only of the Pelagians, whom he received into communion and interceded for them to the Emperor and to Pope Celestine. The error opposed to Pelagianism but equally ruinous was Augustine's teaching that after the fall, man was so corrupt that he could do nothing for his own salvation, and that God simply predestined some men to salvation and others to damnation. Saint John Cassian refuted this blasphemy in the thirteenth of his Conferences, with Abbot Chairemon, which eloquently sets forth, at length and with many citations from the Holy Scriptures, the Orthodox teaching of the balance between the grace of God on one hand, and man's efforts on the other, necessary for our salvation. Saint Benedict of Nursia, in Chapter 73 of his Rule, ranks Saint Cassian's Institutes and Conferences first among the writings of the monastic fathers, and commands that they be read in his monasteries; indeed, the Rule of Saint Benedict is greatly indebted to the Institutes of Saint John Cassian. Saint John Climacus also praises him highly in section 105 of Step 4 of the Ladder of Divine A scent, on Obedience. The Holy Righteous Martyr Eudocia the Samaritan This Saint, who was from Heliopolis of Phoenicia (Baalbek in present-day Lebanon), was an idolater and led a licentious life. Being beautiful beyond telling, she had many lovers, and had acquired great riches. Yet brought to repentance by a monk named Germanus, and baptized by Bishop Theodotus, she distributed to the poor all her ill-gotten gains, and entered a convent, giving herself up completely to the life of asceticism. Her former lovers, enraged at her conversion, her refusal to return to her old ways, and the withering away of her beauty through the severe mortifications she practiced, betrayed her as a Christian to Vincent the Governor, and she was beheaded, according to some, under Trajan, who reigned from 98 to 117, according to others, under Hadrian, who reigned from 117 to

SAINTS AND FEASTS Hesychius the Martyr Holy martyr Hesychius lived during the reign of king Maximian in 302. He was the first and the leader in the royal palace and the Senate, because he was magistrianus by office. When Maximian ordered that all Christians who were royal soldiers ought to be deprived of their belts (which were a sign of their royal merit) and live as civilians and without honour, many Christians preferred to live without any outward honour due to this illegal order than to be honoured and lose their soul. St. Hesychius was numbered with these Christians as well. When the king heard this, he ordered that the saint ought to be stripped of the expensive clothes, which he used to wear, and be dressed with a shabby mantle without sleeves woven from hair and to be as disgraced and disdained as to consort with women. When this had been carried out, the king invited him and asked him: "Aren't you ashamed, Hesychius, that you lost the honour and office of magistrianus and that you have been debased to this kind of life? Or maybe you don't know that the Christians, whose way of life you preferred, have no power to restore you to your previous great honour and office?" The saint replied: "Your honour, o king, is temporary but the honour and glory which Christ gives is eternal and without end." Because of these words the king got angry and ordered his men to tie a great millstone around the saint's neck and then to throw him in the middle of river Orontus, which lies in Coele Syria and which is commonly called Oronge. Thus, the blessed man received the crown of martyrdom from the Lord. The Holy Martyrs Eutropius, Cleonicus, and Basiliscus The Martyrs, who were from Amasia, were fellow soldiers and kinsmen of Saint Theodore the Tyro (see Feb. 17). They were betrayed to the Governor Asclepiodotus as Christians, during the reign of Diocletian ( ). After many torments, Eutropius and Cleonicus were crucified; Basiliscus was not slain together with them, but was shut up in prison, in the hope that with time he might change his mind and sacrifice to the idols. He was beheaded on May 22; see also the account on that day. Gerasimus the Righteous of Jordan This Saint, who was from Lycia in Asia Minor, lived there for many years as a hermit, and then went to Palestine. There he built the great Lavra by the Jordan River, where a lion served him with great obedience and devotion. One day the lion came looking for Gerasimus that he might feed him, but his disciples took the lion to the place where they had buried the Saint shortly before. The lion fell at the Saint's grave and, after roaring with grief, died at that very place. Saint Gerasimus reposed in 475. Conon the Gardener This saint lived during the reign of emperor Decius in 251. He came from the town of Nazareth. He left his hometown and went to the city of Mandron, in the province of Pamphylia. There he stayed at a place called Karmela or Karmena cultivating a garden which he used to water and plant with various vegetables. From this garden he obtained what is necessary for life. He had such an upright and simple mind that, when he met those who wished to arrest him and saw that they greeted him, he also greeted in return from the bottom of his soul and heart. When they told him that governor Publius called the saint to go to him, the saint answered with simplicity: "What does the governor need me, since I am a Christian? Let him call those who think the way he does and have the same religion with him." So, the blessed man was tied and brought to the governor, who tried to move him to sacrifice to the idols. But the saint sighed from the bottom of his heart, cursed the tyrant and confirmed his faith in Christ with his confession, saying that it is not possible to be moved from it even though he might be tortured cruelly. So, for this reason they nailed his feet and made the saint run in front of the governor's coach. But the saint fainted in the street. Having fallen on his knees, he prayed and, thus, he commended his holy soul to the hands of God. 13

SAINTS AND FEASTS Saint Nicholas Planas as a Model for our Lives St. Nicholas Planas (Feast Day - March 2) By Protopresbyter Fr. George Papavarnavas Papa-Nicholas Planas was an innocent and guileless man with deep humility. The prognosticator God endowed him with the gift of foresight while he was still a young child. With the great simplicity that characterized him, he narrated: "One winter night, as we sat at the fireplace, I said to my father: 'Father, at this moment our boat Evangelistria sank outside the City.' Awestruck, our father told my mother: 'Woman, what is the child saying?' And indeed, at that moment our boat sank." And to avoid the admiration of others, as well as the temptation of pride, he would say that "all children have foresight". At fourteen he was left fatherless, and at seventeen he was married in Athens, where he moved with his mother and siblings from his native Naxos. His wife died at a young age, after having given birth to a boy. In the noisy city and amidst many cares, since he was both father and mother for his child and spiritual father for his parishioners, he lived the life of a true ascetic with watchfulness, prayer and a life of worship. The first written witness of the holiness of Papa-Nicholas comes from his contemporary Alexandros Papadiamandis. Papadiamandis was his chanter in the Chapel of the Prophet Elisha, near Monastiraki in Athens. He would chant during Vespers and Matins, Liturgy and Vigils, which were celebrated with solemnity as well as grandeur by Papa-Nicholas. He was able to penetrate the depth of his sanctified existence and realize his numerous gifts, which were carefully hidden under the shell of simplicity and humility, because he also was integrated into the same perspective, that is, he was a bearer of Orthodox Tradition. He calls Papa-Nicholas a worthy liturgist of the Most High and contrasts him with the "professional clergy", as he calls them, saying: "He is the humblest of priests and simplest of people... he is loveable, simple and virtuous, worthy of the first Beatitude of the Savior." He was, like all the Saints, non-avaricious and merciful. "A lot of money passed from his hands, but he immediately channeled it towards almsgiving. Young deacons as well he helped to go study. Many times he didn't even have a penny on him. Without noticing, once he took a cab to take him to a certain house. When he arrived and wanted to pay, he looked for money, and looked again, but nothing. He was embarrassed. The cab driver said to him: 'Aren't you Papa-Nicholas, the parish priest of Saint John?' 'Yes, my child, it is I.' 'Hey, I don't want money, only your prayers.' Another time, someone "for whom he once read a supplication, gave him a respectable amount as payment in a closed envelope. He, taking the envelope, gave it immediately to a poor woman while the envelope was still sealed, as she waited for him to finish the supplication. The person who gave it to him became upset. Couldn't the blessed one, he said, at least have looked at what I gave him!" He showed great patience in temptations and tribulations and unimaginable temperance. Once he said while advising a spiritual daughter: "With patience, my child, I cast aside all the scandals that presented themselves to me." Great importance was given to attention and the concentration of the mind during prayer and worship. In his teachings to his spiritual children he stressed this point very much. Also, when he came out of the sanctuary to cense, during Matins, many times he would be seen censing an empty chair, while in contrast he would not cense certain bystanders. With his spiritual gift he discerned that some of those physically present were actually absent, since their minds were scattered and wandered about here and there, while others who were absent due to illness or other reasons beyond their will were mentally present and praying during that time. He liturgized often and commemorated at the Holy Prothesis very many names of the living and the dead. He was made worthy to hear the chanting of angels. I encourage the reading of his life, which brings great sweetness in the heart, desire for prayer, repentance, willingness for correction and imitation of his pious life.

Π. 21 We and the Spirits of the Departed By Theodore Riginiotes As Christians we have a very serious relationship with our dead. We often speak to them and we continuously speak to God about them. To be more precise, for us, those who have left their body are not dead, but alive. Metaphorically we describe them as sleeping and this is the way we regard them, as living ones who have simply left and live in another place. The place were we bury their bodies is called a cemetery, from the Greek word κοιμητήριο = sleeping place. On the contrary, we consider dead those people who have taken God, His love and His grace, out of their heart, no matter if they live among us or have moved to the place of the departed souls. This is the real death, the eviction of God from our heart, whereas when we allow Him to enter our heart we are fully alive, either here, or at the place of the departed souls. When we say that God enters our heart, we do not mean that he takes control of us and removes our spirit and abolishes our freedom (God never does that, only devious spirits do that). We mean that God s grace comes into us (His life-giving, uncreated, eternal and luminous energy) and transforms us, bringing us closer to Him. This transformation is closely related to the Mysteries of the Christian Church, as we will see shortly. We will now examine what we know about the dead, or the departed. Jesus and the dead: When Jesus died on the cross, His human soul transferred to the place of the dead ( Hades in Greek), where it talked to the dead, as it had done to the living (one might want to see the relevant Orthodox icon Descent into Hades, as well as the testimony of the great and holy Apostle Peter, Jesus disciple, in his First Epistle, chapter 3, verse 19-20). He then took the souls of the dead from Hades and brought them to the place where souls go now, a place called heaven. There, the souls of those dead before Christ together with the souls of the people who lived after Christ, await the resurrection, so that they will live in God s kingdom after assuming their bodies again, but this time as immortal and luminous bodies. The people who lived in this world, having advanced towards God with pure hearts, foretaste heaven the place of the departed souls the indescribable joy generated by their relationship with Christ, by the sight of His heavenly beauty and His uncreated Light. This joy is proportional to their goodness and will reach its full extent after the resurrection of all people. We call this joy paradise. On the contrary, those who lived in this world, confining their love to their egoistic self, foretaste in heaven the grief generated by the relationship with Christ (whom they do not love), by the sight of His heavenly beauty and His uncreated Light. This grief is proportional to the distortion caused by their egoism and will reach its full extent after the resurrection of all people. We call it hell. A reference to the resurrection and to the final state, in which all people (of all races and ages, as well as of all religions) will live, is found in the words of Christ himself, in the Gospel of Mathew, chapter 25, verses This description must be considered in the context of God s love for all people and for all creatures. God does not send to hell the impenitent sinners, but the state of their own soul is itself the hell. The state that does not allow them to taste the indescribable joy of paradise. The departed saints: By becoming human, Christ united with human nature and offered to every person the ability to unite with Him. But because Christ is also God, the person who unites with Him at the same time unites with God. Thus, the union with Christ makes a person a holy creature, in other words, a saint. We know from the experience of all generations of Christianity, and especially from the experience of our Holy Teachers, that to unite with Christ just being a good person is not enough, but holy grace is required, and this is why the Holy Mysteries were delivered to us (Baptism, Confession, Holy Communion, e.t.c.), with which a person properly prepares oneself and calls God to send him His grace. Every simple person, accepting God s grace inside him and responding to it by loving God and his fellow people and forgiving those who want to harm him, or have already done so, approaches God as much as he has progressed on that road. He becomes, that is, a little saint (he receives a little holiness). Whereas, those who have progressed farther on that road and reach the point of love for God and others, even their enemies, much more than they love themselves, are the real saints, those who are often granted from God the gift to perform even miracles. The fervent, sincere, and persistent prayers of people to the true God are accepted at that time and in the way that 21

He wants. The prayers of the saints are more accepted, not only while they live here, among us, but also when their souls have departed to heaven and are foretasting paradise. This is why, when God reveals that a departed Christian is saint, we speak to him (through our prayer but also with the Church ceremonies performed at the day of his remembrance) and ask from him to pray to God for us and for all the world. Also, we appeal to him by painting his icon or dedicating a church to his name. There are innumerable cases that reveal that the saints respond from heaven and answer our prayers. This is what I meant above, saying that we often speak with our dead. God has many ways to reveal that a person is saint: for example, his bones may release a fragrance or even sweet oil (holy scented oil), or people may be cured from illnesses, or other miracles may be performed through his relics. The saint may even appear in dreams or visions to people with pure hearts, and so on. Of course, in all such cases we must be alert to make sure that these revelations are true, because it could be a hoax or a trap of the enemy, meaning a trap from devious spirits, who want to mislead people and make them their followers. When it is certain that this is a true revelation of a saint, the Church includes the saint officially in the calendar and assigns a day dedicated to their memory. Usually it is the day the saint passed away, which is called a birthday, since that day the saint was born in heaven. The existence of Saints and their interventions in our life from heaven prove that there is no reincarnation, and that the souls will never perish, but the souls of people are eternal and remain always the souls of specific persons, with the specific name, personality, memories, feelings, and so on. They will remain so until they are resurrected, assuming again their body, incorruptible and eternal, to live eternally as psychosomatic beings, without dying ever again. Even someone who is not an important and miraculous saint, but whose soul is pure and foretastes paradise, can help living people by praying to God about them. One such case is recorded in the Evergetinos, an ancient Orthodox text, where an unknown dead person (obviously having a foretaste of paradise) appeared and cured the injured leg of a traveler, who had found his body lying on the road, and had buried it. The people who foretaste paradise see our own world, because paradise is the strongest relation with all beings. But people who foretaste hell do not see our own world, because hell is a state of solitude, since the egoism of those people essentially isolated them eternally to their own self. We and the souls: We do not worship the souls of the dead, because we know that only the Triadic God we must worship. The souls of people, as we are taught by the Holy Bible and by all the holy Christian teachers, are not from the same substance of God, but are God s creations, created from nothing, like our bodies and all the material and the spiritual world are. Only the Holy Trinity is uncreated. The Father bears the Son before all ages, and from Him proceeds the Holy Spirit He brought Them into existence through His substance, He does not create Them. On the contrary, He creates souls when a person is conceived inside their mother s womb. So, the souls are not divine. They are what we, living people, are: God s creations who worship God and only God. We love people, regardless if they are here or in the heavens, we pray to God for them or address them, if God has revealed that they are saints, but we do not worship them. We do not worship saints either. Only God we worship. So, when a person departs from this world to go to heaven, we immediately start to talk to God about him. In this way we try to help the state of his soul, so if it was not good enough to foretaste paradise, we may comfort it with our prayers. Since hell is associated with total loneliness, it is not strange that living people s interest for the souls, if fervent, sincere, and persistent, has the power to alleviate this loneliness and bring relief to the state of those souls. The vision experienced by St. Makarios of Egypt, written in the Gerontikon (an ancient book narrating the stories of holy hermits of the desert), proves the above. St. Macarios, while walking in the desert, unearthed, by mistake, a skull with his walking stick. He then bent down, buried the skull with respect, and prayed for the person to whom the skull belonged. Then, the soul appeared to him and informed him that, while living, he was a demon worshiper (a priest of Isis) and now he was in hell. And how is it there? asked the Saint. Everything is in the fire, replied the soul. And we are all tied up back to back. But, when you pray for us, we see a little of each other, for as long as the prayer lasts. We know from holy Christian teachers that the fire mentioned by the soul is the Light of God, which illuminates everything in the other world. The sensation experienced by those who see this Light through the distortion of their egoism is described as the fire of hell. St. Makarios of Egypt was so good that when a young woman, who was pregnant by some secret lover, falsely accused him that the child was his, he accepted the accusation, suffered all kinds of insults from the local people, and started to work double in order to support the woman and her child. And when later the truth was revealed, he left secretly and never tried to clear his name. 22

Also, the case of Saint Gregory the Dialogos (as well as other cases) prove that the fervent, sincere, and persistent prayer of living people for the dead has the ability to even convert the state of a soul from hell to paradise, at least when that particular soul has the required preconditions for this conversion (that is, if the soul is not totally corrupted). The Saint prayed fervently, shedding rivers of tears, for the salvation of the soul of the Roman emperor Trajan, who had persecuted Christians, when informed of an action of charity that he had performed. And later, he was informed by God that his prayers were accepted. Talking to God about souls: Of course, all of us hope that the souls of our beloved are in the state of foretasting paradise, but only for the saints can we be sure. So, as already mentioned, when a person s soul departs from this world, we immediately start to talk to God about that person. In other words, we immediately start to pray. For us, all people are equal, therefore the following apply to everybody: men, women, or children, irrespective of their social status. If that person is not an Orthodox Christian, the only thing to be done is our personal prayer for him, which may be accompanied by fasting or some other small or big sacrifice, which will make our heart cleaner and in this way more appropriate to send our prayers to God. We do not perform for him any official ceremonies in our churches, because the first step and the necessary condition for these ceremonies to be effective, is Holy Baptism in the name of the Holy Trinity. Holy Baptism transforms the person into the good olive tree, into the real grapevine, into Christ. Therefore, in the absence of Baptism, we can offer prayer, with all the warmth and strength of our souls, and fasting or some other sacrifice, but there are no church ceremonies. They have no effect. If the person departing for heaven is an Orthodox Christian, the first thing we do after his departure is a church ceremony, in which all of us participate, called care of the body of that person. During this ceremony we ask God for the first time (all of us together, as a Church, in other words, as a single body) to give rest to the soul of our brother or sister in the Light of His presence. Next, we bury the body into the ground and place a cross at the burial point, the symbol of the victory of Christ against death. We do not burn the body, because for us, although it is not holy so as to worship it, it is however worthy of respect. It is worth our respect because: a) Christ, the age-old God, Son of the Father, the God, who assumed exactly the same body as ours and because He was the New Adam, the grace His own human body received was conveyed to all mankind, b) every Christian has received personally on his own body the grace of God, since he was Baptized in the name of the Holy Trinity, was Chrismated with sweet oil (holy scented oil), and received the holy body and blood of Jesus during the Mystery of Holy Communion, c) if that person has come very close to God, holy grace is intensely present in his relics (bones), which become holy relics if we burn the body, we will deprive ourselves, society, and the whole world, from a source of holy grace, and it is possible that we will never realize that the person reached a state of sainthood, as sainthood is often revealed through the holy relics (which release scent, holy oil, and perform miracles). After the burial, a series of church ceremonies begin, called commemorations (remembrances ) and in these also we ask God for the repose of our brother or sister. During commemorations, a very small portion from the holy bread of Holy Communion is dedicated by name to the departed brother, who, in this way is commemorated inside of the Holy Mystery. Commemorations are performed at the third day a person died, then at the eighth day, then at the fortieth day, then at the end of the third month, and then every three months until the completion of the first year, and then every year on the date the person died. Besides the commemorations, Christians are in the habit of presenting to the priest the names of our departed ancestors and brethren, so that he can commemorate them during Holy Communion during the Divine Liturgy that he will celebrate on Sunday. Messages sent (with God s permission) by departed people to living people through their dreams, reveal that this commemoration offers significant benefit to the state of the soul. Especially when this commemoration is done during forty consecutive Divine Liturgies, which is called sarantaleitourgo (=forty liturgies, from the Greek word σαράντα = forty). One of the innumerable testimonies that reveal how much benefit to the souls the commemoration during the Divine Liturgy has, is the case of St. Theodosius Chernigov (of Russia). The Saint appeared to Monk Alexios, who had lovingly performed the exhumation of his relics, and told him: I thank you for getting tired for me, but I ask you to mention my parents names, Nikitas and Maria, during the Divine Liturgy. Fr. Alexios was surprised and asked him: You, being a saint and praying directly to God for everybody, you ask from me to commemorate your parents? And the Saint answered him: You are right, but the benefit they will have by commemorating their names during the Divine Liturgy is much greater than the benefit that my prayers will offer. When later the monastery s book of commemorations was found, where Saint Theodosius was abbot, it was proved that his parents names were exactly those he had told Fr. Alexios (and were previously unknown)... [from Fr. Serapheim Rose, The Soul After Death]. 23

The church, besides the prayers for the departed sent to God in every Christian ceremony, has assigned one day of the week to be specially dedicated to the commemoration of the departed (meaning the prayer for the repose of their souls), and this day is Saturday. The Church has also assigned some special Saturdays to be dedicated to the commemoration of all the departed, from the beginning of the existence of the mankind on earth until the present day. These Saturdays are named Saturday of Souls. Also, a special prayer for the departed is read during the important church ceremony of the Vespers of Kneeling during the Sunday of Pentecost. Apart from the above, Christians are in the habit of privately lighting a small oil lamp as a symbol of our prayer to God, so that our departed ancestors and brethren will experience His Light with contentment. Also, we burn incense, as a symbol of our prayer, which rises to heaven like the smoke of the incense and which must smell pleasantly (meaning that the prayer must be done with a pure heart, devoid of evilness, hatred, egoism, and without desire of exploitation of other people), as the smoke of the incense smells pleasantly. We dedicate oil lamps and incense to our beloved departed not only at home (near their pictures) but at their graves as well, which we visit whenever we want. Sometimes we call the priest to the grave to perform a small ritual ( trisagion ) for the repose of the departed. Are we afraid of evil souls? Do ghosts exist? As mentioned above, the souls that foretaste paradise, in other words those that have holy grace inside them and possess some holiness (to a bigger or lesser extent), can pray to God for the protection of the living. But the vision of St. Makarios reveals that souls foretasting hell feel completely isolated. Therefore, it is not possible in any way to return to earth and affect the lives of the living. For this reason, Christians do not believe that bad souls are in any way threatening to us. We are not afraid of them, we simply have regret for their grief and suffering and pray to God for them. However, certain places seem to exist that evil spiritual powers have engulfed them with their dark and threatening energy. Such places are mainly those where magic rituals are, or were, performed, by invocation of demonic spirits. These spirits (ghosts) are not souls of departed people, even though sometimes they appear to be such. Similarly, the spirits appearing during spiritual ceremonies, during invocation of spirits by sorcerers, mediums or spiritualists of any kind, are not souls of dead people, either good or bad. Only with prayer, inside the life of the Church, the living address the deceased and always address holy people. All other cases of communication between the dead and the living, that happened and still happen for thousands of years in many civilizations and religions, are at least suspicious. We know from the experience of our holy teachers that the spirits appearing in these cases are not the souls of the dead and that generally they are not what they appear to be, but evil beings seeking to deceive by lying. A proof of the above is the fact that these spirits can become dangerous to those invoking them. Also, in places where such invocations are repeatedly performed, evil energy is accumulated that sooner or later discharges to the lives of people. Because of these cases, the teaching of the Church and the experience of Christians tell us that: a) When a person incorporates himself and his life into the global Body of Christ, the Church, and receives God s grace through the Mystery of Holy Baptism and the other Holy Mysteries and the Christian life (a life that does not include only participation in the religious ceremonies, but also includes love to our fellowmen and especially the forgiveness of our enemies), then with the help of God he can overpower the evil spiritual forces and expel their influence from his life and the life of his beloved ones. b) The Church has special spiritual defenses to offer for this cause, like the fervent prayer invoking Jesus Christ, the placement of the Cross (through which Jesus defeated death) to the place having bad energy, the performing of special ceremonies like exorcism, the sanctification (blessing of water, and then the spraying with it), Holy Unction, and so forth. However, all these are not magic, as if by performing them they will have an automatic effect. We must incorporate them into a true relationship with God: they are petitions to God to come help a person, and He will do that when we will be spiritually ready to accept His therapeutic and saving uncreated Grace. For this reason we must have patience, persistence, trust in God and, even more, repentance for the shortcomings and weaknesses that we surely possess, and ask Him to not only help us, but forgive us for whatever we do, feel, or think against His philanthropist will. The aim of the Church, of the Christian priests, and of the Christian ceremonies is not to serve earthly human needs (like exorcising evil spiritual powers from our lives). Their aim is to help us find and get to know God and help lead us to eternal life near to Him, which is paradise. However, within this scope, all the above provide help to our earthly problems, since these problems often impede our salvation. I conclude this talk, reminding that all spirits are less powerful than Christ (since He created them, and they chose if they want to be good [holy angels] or evil) and more powerful than people. So, the union with Christ is the proper alliance for the protection of people from all malicious spiritual forces. Source: Edited by John Sanidopoulos 24

In Prayer!! 26 Pray or Act? By Jim Liebelt Devote yourselves to prayer, being watchful and thankful. And pray for us, too, that God may open a door for our message, so that we may proclaim the mystery of Christ, for which I am in chains. Pray that I may proclaim it clearly as I should. Colossians 4:2-4 Some years ago it was reported that seconds after the kickoff in a memorable soccer match between the Corinthians and Rio Preto at Bahia Stadium in Brazil, Corinthian striker Roberto Rivelino scored a goal, after a single pass, with a left foot drive from the half line. The ball sailed past the ear of Rio Preto goalkeeper Senhor Isadore Irandir while he was kneeling in the goal finishing his pre-match prayers. Here is a reminder that there is a healthy balance between prayer and action. Prayer is the foundation of our ongoing recognition of God s rightful place in our lives and that He is our Creator and King. There is no doubt from the Scriptures that God s people are to be people of prayer. Action is our recognition that God does not primarily work His will in the world without our participation in that work. Notice from today s Scripture that the Apostle Paul asked people to pray for an open door of opportunity. I think it is significant that Paul didn t ask for prayer for God to somehow proclaim the good news of Jesus supernaturally, but rather that God would provide the opportunity for Paul to minister the gospel effectively. We see that prayer and action are both parts of how God works. Over my years as a Christ follower, I have experienced the tension that exists between prayer and action. It s not always easy to know where and when to move beyond prayer to action or vice versa. Perhaps like me, you know people that seem focused solely on prayer and those who seem focused solely on action. Neither of these approaches is the complete answer. Most of us need to pray more. Some of us need to be willing to act. I believe that each situation in our lives requires balance between prayer and action. Like the goalkeeper, I ve found that there almost always comes a time when we need to get off our knees and act. GOING DEEPER: 1. When it comes to your life s situations, what do you tend to focus more on prayer or action? Consider whether or not you need to become more balanced between prayer and action. 2. Ask God to give you wisdom in finding the balance you need between prayer and action. FURTHER READING: Ecclesiastes 3:1-8; 1 Thessalonians 5:14-16; James 4: No More Excuses By Jim Burns One who was there had been an invalid for thirty-eight years. When Jesus saw him lying there and learned that he had been in this condition for a long time, he asked him, Do you want to get well? Sir, the invalid replied, I have no one to help me into the pool when the water is stirred. While I am trying to get in, someone else goes down ahead of me. Then Jesus said to him, Get up! Pick up your mat and walk. John 5:5-8 I m convinced that procrastination should be added to the deadly sins we read of in the book of Proverbs. There is a great tendency among us human beings to put off making commitments and living life to the fullest. The excuses are abysmal: When I get out of school, then I ll commit my life to God. When I get married, then my life will be happy. As soon as I have some money, my life will change. In today s Scripture, we meet a man who had been sick for 38 years. Jesus asked him the big question: Do you want to get well? Notice that he didn t answer the question with an immediate yes, but hesitated and made an excuse. At times we are so much like the sick man: We know what God wants us to do, but we pause and make an excuse. One morning a vulture was hungry. While flying over the river, he saw a dead animal s carcass floating down the river on a piece of ice. The vulture landed on the ice and began to gorge himself with this delightful meal. He looked up to take a breath of air and noticed that he was 100 yards from a waterfall and that the ice was moving rapidly toward the waterfall. But instead of flying away, he kept eating, though keeping his eye on the waterfall. At 25 yards he decided to take one last bite. Then at 10 yards, he took one last mouthful. With only a few feet to go before the falls he tried to fly, but his feet were now frozen to the ice, and he tumbled to his death over the falls. Don t make excuses! Many a person has wasted his life by putting off the vital long-term priorities for the less important short-term ones. GOING DEEPER: Is there something in your life that you have been putting off with a feeble excuse? Make a commitment to take action now! FURTHER READING: Matthew 9:5-6; Mark 2:11; Luke 5:24

ORTHODOX WEBSITE OF THE WEEK: Don t neglect your prayers Don t neglect your prayers. Just as the body becomes weak when it s deprived of food, so the soul, when it s deprived of prayer, weakens and draws near to the death of the intellect. If the mind is free of the things of this world, it turns in on itself and from itself soars to God. Based on St. Gennadius of Constantinople, St. Basile the Great What is Most Personal is Most Universal By: Henri Nouwen We like to make a distinction between our private and public lives and say, "Whatever I do in my private life is nobody else's business." But anyone trying to live a spiritual life will soon discover that the most personal is the most universal, the most hidden is the most public, and the most solitary is the most communal. What we live in the most intimate places of our beings is not just for us but for all people. That is why our inner lives are lives for others. That is why our solitude is a gift to our community, and that is why our most secret thoughts affect our common life. Jesus says, "No one lights a lamp to put it under a tub; they put it on the lamp-stand where it shines for everyone in the house" (Matthew 5:14-15). The most inner light is a light for the world. Let's not have "double lives"; let us allow what we live in private to be known in public.

YOUTH MINISTRY Study Ties Parents Criticism to Persistent ADHD in Kids Posted by [reposted by] Jim Liebelt February 16, 2016 Published in Church Leaders,, Families, Culture, Family Life, Health Issues, Parenting, Teen Behaviors *The following is excerpted from an online article posted on U.S. News & World Report. Constant criticism from parents reduces the likelihood that children with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) will have fewer symptoms by the time they reach their teens, a new study suggests. In many cases, ADHD symptoms decrease as children get older. But this doesn t occur in all cases. And the new study findings suggest that parental criticism may be a factor. For the study, researchers followed 388 children with ADHD and their families for three years. The parents levels of criticism and overprotectiveness were assessed two times one year apart. To determine levels of parental criticism and overprotectiveness, the investigators asked parents to talk about their relationship with their child. Experts then rated the level of criticism by how many harsh, negative statements the parents made about their child, rather than about the child s behavior. Overprotectiveness was measured by determining levels of emotional over involvement. Only constant parental criticism was associated with ongoing ADHD symptoms in the children into their teen years, according to the study published in the Journal of Abnormal Psychology. The [new] finding here is that children with ADHD whose families continued to express high levels of criticism over time failed to experience the usual decline in symptoms with age, and instead maintained persistent, high levels of ADHD symptoms, lead author Erica Musser said in a journal news release. Musser is an assistant professor of psychology at Florida International University in Miami. While there is an association, the study does not actually show that parental criticism is the cause of ongoing ADHD symptoms, she added. Interventions to reduce parental criticism could lead to a reduction in ADHD symptoms, but other efforts to improve the severe symptoms of children with ADHD could also lead to a reduction in parental criticism, creating greater well-being in the family over time, Musser said. 31 St. Kosmas Aitolos Bookstore 701 Norwood Road, Silver Spring, MD Hours: Monday thru Friday 10am-4pm THE RETURN OF THE PRODIGAL SON By: Henri J. M. Nouwen A chance encounter with a reproduction of Rembrandt's The Return of the Prodigal Son catapulted Henri Nouwen on a long spiritual adventure. Here he shares the deeply personal and resonant meditation that led him to discover the place within where God has chosen to dwell. In seizing the inspiration that came to him through Rembrandt's depiction of the powerful Gospel story, Henri Nouwen probes the several movements of the parable: the younger son's return, the father's restoration of sonship, the elder son's vengefulness, and the father's compassion. In his reflection on Rembrandt in light of his own life journey, the author evokes a powerful drama of the parable in a rich, captivating way that is sure to reverberate in the hearts of readers. The themes of homecoming, affirmation, and reconciliation will be newly discovered by all who have known loneliness, dejection, jealousy, or anger. The challenge to love as the father and be loved as the son will be seen as the ultimate revelation of the parable known to Christians throughout time, and here represented with a vigor and power fresh for our times. For all who ask, "Where has my struggle led me?" or for those "on the road" who have had the courage to embark on the journey but seek the illumination of a known way and safe passage, this work will inspire and guide each time it is read. "The Return of the Prodigal Son is a beautiful book, as beautiful in the simple clarity of its wisdom as in the terrible beauty of the transformation to which it calls us." --New Oxford Review Cost: $

St. Kosmas Aitolos Bookstore 701 Norwood Road, Silver Spring, MD Hours: Monday thru Friday 10am-4pm Home Tonight Further Reflection on the Parable of the Prodigal Son By: Henri J. M. Nouwen Home Tonight follows the path of Henri Nouwen s spiritual homecoming. More than three years prior to writing his great classic, The Return of the Prodigal Son, Nouwen suffered a personal breakdown followed by a time of healing solitude when he encountered Rembrandt s famous painting. Within his solitude he reflected on and identified with the parable s characters and experienced profound and inspiring life lessons. This captivating book was created from never-before-published materials that formed the basis of the small workshop inspired by Nouwen s intimate encounter with Rembrandt s painting. Readers are led to welcome their unique Belovedness through practices of spiritual listening, journaling, and communing with God, thus connecting personally with the unique, unconditional love of the One who created them. Home Tonight is a practical guide for the inner journey home. Cost: $
