BRETHREN, since we have a high priest who has passed through the heavens, Jesus, the Son of God, let us hold fast our confession. For we have not a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but one who in every respect has been tempted as we are, yet without sin. Let us then with confidence draw near to the throne of grace, that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need. For every high priest chosen from among men is appointed to act on behalf of men in relation to God, to offer gifts and sacrifices for sins. He can deal gently with the ignorant and wayward, since he himself is beset with weakness. Because of this he is bound to offer sacrifice for his own sins as well as for those of the people. And one does not take the honor upon himself, but he is called by God, just as Aaron was. So also Christ did not exalt himself to be made a high priest, but was appointed by him who said to him, "Thou art my Son, today I have begotten thee"; as he says also in another place, "Thou art a priest for ever, after the order of Melchizedek." 4 Sunday of the Holy Cross The Gospel of Mark 8:34-38; 9:1 The Lord said: "If anyone wishes to come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me. For whoever would save his life will lose it; and whoever loses his life for my sake and the gospel's will save it. For what does it profit a man, to gain the whole world and forfeit his life? For what can a man give in return for his life? For whoever is ashamed of me and my words in this adulterous and sinful generation, of him will the Son of man also be ashamed, when he comes in the glory of his Father with the holy angels." And he said to them, "Truly, I say to you, there are some standing here who will not taste death before they see the kingdom of God come with power." Johnson ὑπογραφήν τοῦ Νόμου ὑπέρ τῶν Ἀνθρωπίνων Δικαιωμάτων τοῦ 1964) Ἡ ὑποστήριξις τοῦ Ἀρχιεπισκόπου Ἰακώβου πρός τόν Dr. Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr. Διά τήν κίνησιν ὑπέρ τῶν Ἀνθρωπίνων Δικαιωμάτων πραγματοποιήθηκε στήν μεγαλειώδη πορείαν των ἀπό τό Brown Chapel,τῆς Ἐπισκοπελιανῆς Ἐκκλησίας μέχρι τῶν Δικαστηρίων τῆς Σέλμα Ἀλαμπάμα στίς 15 Μαρτίου, 1965, ἡ ὁποία καί ἔφερε πολύ πλησίον τούς Ἑλληνο-Αμερικανούς μέ τούς ἈφρικοΑμερικανούς καί ἐδημιούργησε ἕνα ἰσχυρό δεσμό μεταξύ τῶν δύο Κοινοτήτων, ὁ ὁποῖος καί παραμένει μέχρι σήμερον. Ὁ ἀοίδιμος Ἀρχιεπίσκοπός μας ἐβάδισε μετά τοῦ φίλου του Μάρτιν Λουθερ Κίνγκ, διότι ὅπως εἶπε ἀπήντησε «στό κάλεσμα τοῦ Θεοῦ στήν Ἑλληνικήν Ὀρθόδοξον Ἐκκλησίαν, ἡ ὁποία ποτέ δἐν δίστασε νά ἀγωνίζεται ὅταν ἦτο ἀνἀγκη, διά τά ἀνθρώπινα δικαιώματα». Τό θερμό του ἐνδιαφέρον εἰς τήν κίνησιν διά τά ἀνθρώπινα δικαιώματα, ὡς πνευματικός ἡγέτης περισσοτέρων ἀπό τρία ἑκατομμύρια Ὀρθοδόξων Χριστιανῶν εἰς τό Δυτικόν Ἠμισφαίριον, καί ἡ συμμετοχή του εἰς τήν Σέλμα, ὁμοῦ μετά ἄλλων συμπορευτῶν, βοήθησε εἰς τό νά φέρη τήν νομοθέτησιν τοῦ δικαιώματος τῆς ψήφου. Ἀγαπητοί μου, ὁ Ἀρχιεπίσκοπος Ἰάκωβος μέ ὅλας τάς προσπαθείας του προώθησε τίς Ἡνωμένες Πολιτεῖες στήν θετική κατεύθυνση τῆς ἰσότητος. Ὁ Δρ. Λούθερ Κίνγκ εἶπε εἰς τήν ὁμιλία του Ἔχω ἕνα ὄνειρο: «Ἔχομε ἔλθη ἐπίσης εἰς αὐτό τό ἱερό σημεῖο νά ὑπενθυμήσωμε στήν Ἀμερική τῆς φοβερῆς ἀνάγκης τοῦ παρόντος. Τώρα εἶναι ἡ ὥρα νά σηκώσωμε τό Ἔθνος μας ἀπό τήν ὀλισθηρότητα τῆς φυλετικῆς ἀδικίας, πρός τήν στερεάν βάσην τῆς ἀδελφοσύνης. Τώρα εἶναι ὁ καιρός νά παράγωμε τήν δικαιοσύνη ὡς πραγματικότητα γιά ὅλα τά τέκνα τοῦ Θεοῦ. Δέν μποροῦμε νά πηγαίνωμε πίσω. Ἄς μή μένωμε στήν κοιλάδα τῆς ἀπελπισίας, σᾶς δηλώνω σήμερα φίλοι μου, ἔχω ἕνα ὄνειρο. Ἔχω ἕνα ὄνειρο πού μία μέρα κάθε κοιλάδα θά ἀνυψωθῆ καί κάθε λόφος καί βουνό θά χαμηλώση, τά σκληρά μέρη θά γίνουν ἁπλά, καί κάθε ἀνώμαλος τόπος θά γίνη ὀμαλός, καί ἡ δόξα τοῦ Κυρίου θά φανερωθῆ καί κάθε ἄνθρωπος θά ἴδη τήν σωτηρίαν τοῦ Θεοῦ. (

6 Ἠσα. 40: 4-5) Ἀληθῶς ἡ προτεραιότης τῆς Ὀρθοδοξίας πρέπει νά δῆ καί νά ἀφαιρέση κάθε εἴδος διακρίσεως. Ἀληθῶς ἡ Ἐκκλησία καί ὁ Κλῆρος ἔφεραν στό φῶς καί ἐκρίζωσαν ὄχι μόνον τά λάθη πού ὑπεβλήθησαν στήν Ἀφρικανο-Αμερινική Κοινότητα ἀλλά καί σέ ὅλους τούς ἀνθρώπους, πού διεκρίθησαν διά τήν ἐθνικότητα, τό γένος, καί τήν θρησκείαν τους. Ἀγαπητοί μου Χριστιανοί Ὀρθόδοξοι, πρέπει μέ σταθερότητα νά ὑπερασπίσωμε τό ἀναφαίρετο δικαίωμα τῆς ἀνθρώπινης ἀξιοπρεπείας καί ἀξίας. Κάθε ἄνθρωπος μπορεί νά φθάση στήν θέωση, ὅπως εἶπε ὁ Θεός: «Ποιήσωμεν ἄνθρωπον κατ εἰκόνα ἡμετέραν καί καθ ὁμοίωσιν»(γεν 1:26) Τά φυσικά ἀνθρώπινα δικαιώματα εἶναι σύμφυτα, Θεόσδοτα, σέ κάθε ἄνθρωπο. Κάθε προσβολή ἀνθρωπίνου δικιώματος εἶναι προσβολή τοῦ Παντοδύναμου Θεοῦ καί ἔχει συνέπειες. (Γεν 9:6) Ἑπομένως ἀνοῖξτε τό στόμα σας στήν ἀφωνία, διά τά δικαιώματα ὅλων πού εἶναι ἄποροι. Ἀνοῖξτε τό στόμα σας καί κρίνετε δίκαια, ὑπερασπίσατε τά δικαιώματα τῶν πτωχῶν καί τῶν ἐνδεῶν. (Παροιμ. 31:8-9 ) Δικαιώσατε τούς ἀδυνάτους καί τούς ὀρφανούς, ὑποστηρίξατε τά δικαιώματα τῶν λυπημένων καί τῶν πτωχῶν. (Ψαλ. 82:3) Μάθετε νά κάνετε τό καλόν, ρύσασθε ἀδικούμενον, ζητήσατε τό δίκαιον (Ἠσαϊου 1:17) Δέν ὑπάρχουν πλέον Ἑβραῖοι καί Ἕλληνες, δοῦλοι καἰ ἐλεύθεροι, ἄρσεν καί θῆλυ, διότι εἶσθε ἕνα ἀφοῦ ἑνωθήκατε μέ τόν Χριστόν. (Γαλ. 3:28) Ο ἀληθινός ἀνθρωπισμός καί τά ἀληθῆ ἀνθρώπινα δικαιώματα ἀπεκαλύφθησαν καί ἐκπληρώθηκαν διά τῆς ἐνανθρωπήσεως τοῦ Υἱοῦ τοῦ Θεοῦ, τοῦ Κυρίου καί Θεοῦ καί Σωτῆρος ἡμῶν Ἰησοῦ Χριστοῦ. Ἡ προκήρυξις τῆς Ἀνεξαρτησίας τῶν Ἡνωμένων Πολιτειῶν ἀναφέρει ὅτι ὁ Θεός δώρησε τά δικαιώματα καί τήν ἐλευθερία εἰς ἡμᾶς. Κρατοῦμε αὐτές τίς ἀλήθειες ὡς αὐτοφανείς ἀποδείξεις ὅτι ὅλοι οἱ ἄνθρωποι ἐδημιουργήθησαν ἴσοι καί ὅτι ἐπροικίσθησαν ὑπό τοῦ Θεοῦ μέ δικαιώματα ὅπως εἶναι ἡ Ζωή, ἡ Ἐλευθερία καί ἡ ἐπιδίωξις τῆς εὐτυχίας. Ἡ πορεία διά τά Ἀνθρώπινα Δικαιώματα στή Σέλμα μᾶς ὑπενθυμίζει ὅτι τό κυβερνηκτικό σύστημα τῆς Ἀμερικῆς εἶναι βασισμένο ἐπάνω εἰς αὐτήν τήν ὑπόθεσιν. Δέν ὑπάρχει κανένα ἄλλο ὀχύρωμα διά τήν προστασίαν τῶν φυσικῶν Ἀνθρωπίνων Δικαιωμάτων ἐκτὀς ἀπό τήν Θεία ἔγκριση. Ἡ ἀφαίρεσις τοῦ Θεοῦ, ἀφαιρεῖ ὅλες τίς ἀξίες τῆς ἐλευθερίας,δικαιώματος,ἐννοιῶν καί σκοποῦ. Οἱ οὐρανοί διηγοῦνται τήν δόξαν τοῦ Θεοῦ καί διακηρύτουν ὅτι εἶναι ἔργον Αὐτοῦ. Κάθε ἡμέρα βροντοφωνεῖ στήν ἑπόμενη ἡμέρα καί κάθε νύκτα ἀναγγέλει εἰς τήν ἄλλη νύκτα τήν γνώση τοῦ Θεοῦ. Οἱ λόγοι πού διαλαλοῦν οἱ οὐρανοί δέν εἶναι σιωπηλοί, ἀλλά ἀκούονται παντοῦ. (Ψαλμ. 19:1-3) Αἰωνία ἡ μνήμη ὅλων ἐκείνων τῶν πιστῶν ὁραματιστῶν, ἡγετῶν ἡρώων καί ὑπερμάχων τῶν Ἀνθρωπίνων Δικαιωμάτων, ὅπως ὁ Ἀείμνηστος Ἀρχιεπίσκοπος Ἰάκωβος καί ὁ Δρ. Λούθερ Κίνγκ. Ὡς Μητροπολίτης σας καί πνευματικός σας Πατήρ διακηρύττω κατά τήν 50ήν Ἐπέτειον τῶν Ἀνθρωπίνων Δικαιωμάτων στήν πορεία τῆς Σέλμα ὅτι: Οἱ Ὀρθόδοξοι Χρισταινοί τῆς θεοσώστου Ἱερᾶς ἡμῶν Μητροπόλεως Νέας Ἰερσέης, στέκονται στό πλευρό τῶν ἀδελφῶν μας πού ἀγωνίζονται διά τήν ἰσότητα, τήν ζωή, τήν ἐπιδίωξιν τῆς εὐτυχίας καί στό δικαίωμα νά ζοῦν ὡς ἐλεύθεροι ἄνθρωποι στό ἴδιο Ἔθνος, ὑπό τήν προστασία τοῦ Θεοῦ ἑνωμένοι μέ τήν ἐλευθερία καί τήν δικαιοσύνη δι ὅλους. 7 March 15, 2015: The 50th Anniversary of the Civil Rights March in Selma, Alabama The Very Reverend and Reverend Clergy Honorable Archons of the Ecumenical Patriarchate, Esteemed Members of the Metropolitan Council, Esteemed Members of the Parish Councils, Philoptochos Societies, Faculty and Students of the Catechetical and Greek Afternoon Schools, Directors and Participants of all Youth Organizations, and all devout Orthodox Christians of the Greek Orthodox Communities of our Holy Metropolis of New Jersey My Beloved, Glory to the Most High! May this mark the beginning of a new age for all humankind, an era when the Word of God charts and guides our lives (the late Archbishop Iakovos of North and South America after President Lyndon B. Johnson signed the Civil Rights Act of 1964.) Archbishop Iakovos support of the Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and the faith-based American Civil Rights Movement, actualized by their fateful march from the Brown Chapel of the African Methodist Episcopal Church to the Dallas County Courthouse in Selma, Alabama on March 15, 1965, brought Greek-Americans and African-Americans much closer and created a solid bond between the two communities that is most powerful even to this very day. Our highly revered Archbishop marched with his friend, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., because he said that he answered a God-given call for the Greek Orthodox Church, which has never hesitated to fight when it felt it must, for the rights of mankind. His vested interest in the Civil Rights Movement as the spiritual leader of more than 3 million Orthodox Christians in the western Hemisphere, and participation in Selma with other marchers helped bring to fruition the passage of voting rights legislation. My beloved, Archbishop Iakovos overall efforts pushed the United States in a positive direction of equality. Dr. King said in his iconic I Have a Dream speech: We have also come to this hallowed spot to remind America of the fierce urgency of Now Now is the time to lift our nation from the quicksand of racial injustice to the solid rock of brotherhood. Now is the time to make justice a reality for all of God s children We cannot turn back Let us not wallow in the valley of despair, I say to you today, my friends I have a dream today! I have a dream that one day every valley shall be exalted, and every hill and mountain shall be made low, the rough places will be made plain, and the crooked places will be made straight; and the glory of the Lord shall be revealed and all flesh shall see it together (Isaiah 40:4-5). Indeed, the precedence of Orthodoxy is to face and eliminate all forms of discrimination. Indeed, the Church and its God-ordained principles brought into focus the eradication not only of the wrongs inflicted upon the African-American community but upon all peoples who have been discriminated as a result of race, ethnicity, gender, and creed. My fellow Orthodox Christians, we must stand firm in the defense of inalienable human dignity and worth.

8 The human being has the capacity to become god-like or to achieve theosis because God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness (Genesis 1:26). The so-called natural human rights are rooted in the inherent, God-given, worth or dignity of each and every human being. Any affront to his or her nature is an affront to the Almighty and bears the harshest penalty (Genesis 9:6). Therefore, Open your mouth for the mute, for the rights of all who are destitute. Open your mouth, judge righteously, defend the rights of the poor and needy (Proverbs 31:8-9). Give justice to the weak and the fatherless; maintain the right of the afflicted and the destitute (Psalm 82:3). Learn to do good; seek justice, correct oppression; bring justice to the fatherless, plead the widow s cause (Isaiah 1:17). There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free, there is no male and female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus (Galatians 3:28). True humanity and real human rights have been revealed and fulfilled in the Incarnation of the Son of God Jesus Christ our Lord and Savior. The Declaration of Independence of the United States of America states that God Himself bestowed our rights and liberties upon us. We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty, and the pursuit of Happiness. The Civil Rights March in Selma ever-reminds us that the entire system of government of America is anchored upon this unique premise. No other bulwark exists to safeguard the natural rights of human beings except Divine sanction. The removal of God removes all claims to liberty, rights, meaning, and purpose. The heavens declare the glory of God. And the firmament shows his handiwork. Day unto day utters speech, and night unto night reveals knowledge. There is no speech nor language where their voice is not heard (Psalm 19:1-3). Eternal be the memory of such dynamic and adamantine faithbased visionaries, leaders, heroes, and champions of human rights and dignity such as Archbishop Iakovos and Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. As your Metropolitan, Spiritual Father, and Leader, I declare on this 50th Anniversary of the Civil Rights March in Selma that: The Orthodox faithful of our God-saved Greek Orthodox Metropolis of New Jersey stand side-by-side with our brothers and sisters of the human race for equality, life, the pursuit of happiness, and the right to live as free people, in one and the same Nation, under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all.
