Και το ξέρουµε γιατί εδώ και εικοσιτέσσερις τόσους αιώνες, αυτή η θέση παρουσιάστηκε διεξοδικά σ ένα φυλακισµένο γέροντα εκεί που ετοιµαζόταν να πιεί το κώνειο µε το πέσιµο του ήλιου ο οποίος όµως, για λόγους που ίσως ακόµα να έχουν ενδιαφέρον, ποσώς δεν εντυπωσιάστηκε, παρ όλο που η θέση αποτελούσε την «τελευταία λέξη» της φυσικής, της φυσιολογίας και της THE QUESTION, IN CONTEXT, AND MY RESPONSE TO IT Andrew C. Papanicolaou 1.I imagine that nobody would question the fact that, lately, we have learned loads of stuff about the brain and about relationships between patterns of electrochemical events in it, on the one hand, and actions and subjective (e.g. perceptual) experiences, on the other. Nor is there any question but that with every passing year, though dozens of hypotheses and "factoids " about the brain, behavior and mentation fall by the wayside, hundreds of the same become established as solid facts (to the degree, of course, that "solid" can be a predicate of empirical facts). 2.Equally non-controversial would be, I trust, that this explosion of empirical findings in the neurosciences has been followed by an equally precipitous rise of interest in the question of how the brain gives rise to mind and consciousness. In fact, a new word, "Neurophilosophy", has been coined to identify the type of discourse inspired by the import of the newly discovered facts, for philosophical issues of this kind. 3.What I do find somewhat controversial, however, are some rather "loud" pronouncements, ranging from exposes of presumed errors of older, plain philosophers, (that is, not neurophilosophers) like Descartes, to definite explanations of consciousness, on the strength of the brave new world of neuroscientific facts. But, to me, especially controversial is the belief, shared by many educated non-specialists and probably most neuroscientists, that within this new world it is otiose to ask whether the brain generates consciousness, because it is taken for granted that it does. Rather, one should only ask and debate, again on the basis of the new facts, how out of the various electrochemical event patterns in and of the brain, there arise the various phenomena of mind and consciousness. 4.Now, we all know, that neither the belief in that theory, nor the theory itself, is new. In fact, about two thousand four hundred years ago, such a theory was recounted to an imprisoned old man, about to be executed at sundown, who, as it happened, was not particularly impressed with it, in spite of the fact that it was "the last word" of natural philosophy, physiology and medicine of his day. You will recall that the main point of that theory was that the mind is a phenomenon that emerges from the various physiological processes of the body, just as music emerges from coordinated movements of parts of musical instruments- the lyre, in particular, if I remember right. Such a theory, I just said, not only appears eminently reasonable to many educated people today, but also enjoys the endorsement of most eminent contemporary neuroscientists and neurophilosophers. Clearly then, one would expect that such

(Εντάξει πλάκα κάνω, πάµε πιο κάτω). endorsements ought to constitute sufficient warrant of the soundness of the theory (the contrary opinion of an old, long dead man, withstanding). This would have been so if it were not for the fact that the man in question was among the first to set out the rules of reasonable discourse, and of logical proof and demonstration and if, also, it were not for another, rather remarkable, fact, this one: 5. Whereas the new findings are deemed sufficient to decide in favor of one particular metaphysical position, the position that mind and consciousness emerge from the workings of the brain, they are, evidently, insufficient to decide whether the relevant mechanism consist in this or that set of brain structures and events or that it operates this way or that, or that it has this or that cardinal feature that makes it possible for us to recognize it as the mechanism of consciousness rather than, say, the mechanism of thermoregulation. Or, put in a different way, since the new data do not support, to most people's satisfaction, any one model of how the brain generates mind and consciousness to the exclusion of all other competing models, we really have no idea which, if any, of these, presumably, falsifiable models is correct. (Is it all e.g. a question of consciousness-specific neurons, a question of 40Hz activity of various cell assemblies or what? --that is what I mean here). Yet we go on claiming that science lends its support to one particular metaphysical position and not to another. 6. Now, one may wish to wave away Socrates' objections to the theory. After all, for all his wisdom, he did not have the benefit of the new facts. But, I think, and to be a bit provocative, I declare, that I consider the belief that empirical facts can support a particular metaphysical position, when they are patently insufficient to decide among alternative scientific (i.e. empirically falsifiable) models, a sign of audacity or epistemic innocence or, most likely, both. So, there! Now you know that I opt for intellectual timidity, I consider my timidity epistemic sophistication and I view our glorious ancestors, (τους Αρχαίους ηµών προγόνους - έτσι δεν πάει?) infallible like the popes of yesteryear. (You wouldn't mind a joke or two along the way, would you?) 7. Time now to leave the generalities and the loose talk aside, and lay down some definitions. What is it, exactly; that the misguided (πλάκα είπαµε κάνω, µη πετάτε ακόµα πέτρες) believe that emerges from the activity of the brain, on the strength of the new facts? I have been saying, loosely, up to now, that what they believe emerges is "mind", mentation", "consciousness". By the way, it is only accidental that I didn t also say "conscience", "psyche", "awareness" and any other noun that describes aspects of the reality (or the mirage) on this side of the divide that bifurcates nature into aestheta and noeta. Or, in later groupings, into stuff extended and stuff non-extended. Or, more plainly and perhaps wrongly into things material and things immaterial. (Please note here that all current models in neurophilosophy do begin with the premise that the brain and all events within it are material, i.e. subject to the laws of physics and that the mind or consciousness that emerges from it, is immaterial, i.e. causally inert). But, to return to the question, among the many things

Ποια είδη λοιπόν, και ποιο immaterial that the brain is credited with generating, I propose that we focus, for the purposes of this discussion, on just one type: Let us focus on conscious awareness. Not the objects, or the contents of awareness, but on things like the quality "red", "sweet", "painful", for instance, rather than on the "red poppy" "honey, "lesion" (i.e. the aestheta objects with the corresponding experiential qualities). And let us do that because, for one thing, awareness of such qualities is what all people would agree are, unequivocally, phenomena - tokens of consciousness. So, the belief that I claim exists and that I find objectionable is that new, "neuroscientific" facts urge us to believe that the brain generates conscious experiences of the above-mentioned varieties. 8. Also loosely, up to now, I have been mouthing a lot of verbs to describe what is (wrongly, in my opinion) believed that neuroscience tells us the brain does: I have mentioned the verb "cause", "generate", "emerge", "engender" because in this, too, I have been imitating the way things are said in some professional and many non-professional circles. But the thing I find specifically objectionable is the belief in a particular type of causation or generation, and there are three of those: 9. The most common variety of "cause", in scientific discourse, is the necessary condition. Thus the statement: "the brain or some of its particular activities is (are) among the necessary conditions of consciousness as defined above". Thus also the variety of merely descriptive models that simply describe the ever increasing number of neurophysiological necessary conditions for the appearance of phenomena - tokens of consciousness. Now, no one that I have ever talked with has ever disputed that statement and neither do I. Clearly, the belief in this type of causal role of the brain is justified and enhanced by the new as well as by every bit of the old facts. And not only by scientific or "neuroscientific" facts but also by plain, every-day facts, of human experience. 10. A second variety of causes are those referred to as necessary and sufficient condition(s). Thus the claim: "On the strength of the new facts of the neurosciences, the brain is the necessary and sufficient condition of consciousness". Now, the people that would make such a claim (and who must also believe that (a) the hypothetico - deductive method can provide absolute proof, (b) that "crucial" experiments are possible and, to be consistent, that (c) a brain alone, a "bodiless" brain, or a brain suspended in void, can generate consciousness) are, fortunately, few. And to these few I would say "no". No facts in the neurosciences, old or new, justify such a belief for the simple reason that in this world of ours, where all elements and events are interdependent and interconnected, it is absurd to consider brains as hermetically closed systems, causally detached from the rest of nature. 11. But most reasonable people, when claiming that modern neuroscience is providing support to the idea that the brain causes consciousness have in mind specific generative ( as opposed to merely descriptive ) models that consider the brain equivalent to specific purpose machines (either evolved or designed, natural or artificial) that, though they depend for their existence and function on the rest of the

εν υπάρχει λοιπόν λόγος να χάνουµε την ώρα µας συζητώντας αυτήν εδώ την εκδοχή. universe, can indeed produce particular things that no other type of machine can. So, in the same way that the pancreas is said to produce insulin, for example (wasn't this Huxley's example?) the brain is said to produce conscious experience- -a saying that is presumably borne out by the new facts. And, it is this belief, that "modern scientific facts urge on us this view of the causal potency of the brain" or that "modern scientific facts are sufficient for developing generative models of the brain" that I have difficulty with. 12. Why do I have difficulty? Well, because, first of all, as I mentioned at the very beginning, the presumably pertinent facts are not good enough to decide even among alternative, empirically falsifiable models of brain mechanisms of consciousness. So, why should I believe that they, nevertheless, are good enough to decide among metaphysical positions? A second reason for my difficulty is this: As long as we continue not to have a choice but to acknowledge that consciousness is not co-substantial with its presumed generator, all analogies that have been used to express its relation to the brain (pancreas-insulin, object-shadow, train engine- whistle, lyre-music) will continue to be inept, and this has a very important practical consequence: All brain explorations invasive and non-invasive, ancient and modern, can not but involve the computing of relations between cosubstantial events. And, to keep to the point, I have yet to hear or see any fact, model or demonstration that connects or that has the possibility of connecting "material" generators with the experiential qualities they presumably generate. And, even if such a model were said to have come about, it would be impossible for me or for you to be sure that, if implemented, it would produce experiences of pains and pleasures and such. 13. Thus the challenge: Are there any new facts that we could come up with, that would compel a reasonable fellow like Socrates to accept the theory which says that as the strings of the lyre produce the sounds of music, so does his brain produce his joy at the (defunct if he were to accept the theory) possibility of going, once again, after sunset, to join his god? 11.

παραγωγικών προτύπων τα οποία εξηγούν ικανοποιητικά πώς ο εγκέφαλος παράγει συνείδηση. 12. Κι είναι αυτή ακριβώς η πρόταση που µε δυσκολεύει: Γιατί µε δυσκολεύει; Πρώτον διότι, καθώς ανέφερα στην αρχή, τα σχετικά εµπειρικά δεδοµένα είναι προφανώς ανεπαρκή να ξεχωρίσουν ποιό απ' όλα τα πρότυπα που κυκλοφορούν στέκει και ποιο όχι. Οπότε, λεω, εφ' όσον κανένα από τα συγκεκριµένα πρότυπα δεν χαίρει γενικής αποδοχής και δεν επιβεβαιώνεται από τα εµπειρικά δεδοµένα, ποιος ο λόγος να πιστέψουµε ότι, παρ' όλα ταύτα, δεν υπάρχει αµφιβολία ότι τα ίδια δεδοµένα επικυρώνουν την µεταφυσική θέση πως ο εγκέφαλος παράγει συνείδηση; (Η πρόταση θάταν µόνο ως υπόθεση αποδεκτή αλλά όχι ως ήδη τεκµηριωµένη υπόθεση). Σ' αυτό θα µπορούσε να αντιπροτείνει κανείς ότι η αεί διογκούµενη µάζα δεδοµένων συµβαδίζει µε την "φύσει πρότερη" κι ανεξάρτητη απ' τα εν λόγω δεδοµένα πεποίθηση στην δυνατότητα του εγκεφάλου να δηµιουργεί συνείδηση. Κι ότι, επιπλέον,αργά ή γρήγορα θα προκύψει και το σωστό παραγωγικό πρότυπο. Ίσως. Αλλά µάλλον όχι διότι εφ' όσον παραµένει ανέφικτο να πειστούµε πως αυτό που λέµε "ποιόν" και αυτό που λέµε "υλικό εγκέφαλο" είναι πράγµατα ανοµοιογενή κι αλλότρια, όλες οι παροµοιώσεις και µεταφορές µε τις οποίες προσπαθούµε να εκφράσουµε την σχέση τους και να την ενσωµατώσουµε στα παραγωγικά µας πρότυπα (πάγκρεαςινσουλίνη, αντικείµενο-σκιά, ατµοµηχανή-σφυρίχτρα, λύρα- µελωδία) θα παραµένουν άστοχες, και όλα τα υπάρχοντα αλλά και όλα τα µελλούµενα πρότυπα θα παραµένουν µη διαψεύσιµα κι η εγκυρότητά τους θα παραµένει εσαεί αστάθµητη γιατί όλες οι προσπάθειες εξερευνήσεως του εγκεφάλου δεν µπορούν παρά να διαψεύδουν σχέσεις µεταξύ οµοειδών (ή οµοουσίων) πραγµάτων και όχι άρδην ανοµοίων όπως είναι ο εγκέφαλος και η συνείδηση. Και για να επανέλθω στο κεντρικό θέµα, ούτε έχω ακόµα δει ούτε ακούσει για ευρήµατα που έχουν αποδείξει ή που έχουν την δυνατότητα να επικυρώσουν κάποιο παραγωγικό πρότυπο για το πώς ένας "υλικός εγκέφαλος"µε την τρέχουσα έννοια της φράσεως, παράγει άυλες εµπειρίες. Επί πλέον, είπα, τέτοιο πρότυπο ακόµα δεν υπάρχει αλλά στην περίπτωση που προέκυπτε θα ήταν, διατείνοµαι, αδύνατον να επιβεβαιώσουµε εάν αυτό το πρότυπο (είτε ενσωµατωµένο σε κάποιο φυσικό-υλικό σύστηµα που θα δοµούσαµε είτε προσοµοιωµένο σε κάποιο υπολογιστή) θα ήταν σε θέση να δηµιουργήσει τις ηδονές και τις οδύνες που χαρακτηρίζουν την ιδιωτική µας εσωτερική ζωή. 13. Λεω πως ούτε έχω δει ούτε ακούσει για τέτοιου είδους ευρήµατα αλλά πολύ πιθανό να κάνω λάθος. Σας ρωτώ λοιπόν: Υπάρχουν καινούργια στοιχεία που θα έπειθαν τον όποιο λογικό και καλοπροαίρετο άνθρωπο, τον Σωκράτη, ας πούµε, πως όπως ακριβώς η λύρα παράγει µουσική έτσι κι ο εγκέφαλος παράγει τη χαρά του για το επικείµενο ταξίδι του στα ληµέρια του Θεού του η οποία παρεµπιπτόντως θα εξατµίζονταν τη στιγµή που θ' αποδέχονταν την θεωρία;
