Καί ξαφνικά ήρθε από τον ουρανό βοή, πού έμοιαζε σαν να φυσά δυνατός άνεμος, καί γέμισε το σπίτι πού κάθονταν. Καί παρουσιάστηκαν γλώσσες σαν φλόγες φωτιάς να διαμοιράζονται σ' αυτούς καί να κάθεται από μια στον καθένα καί όλοι γέμισαν από Πνεύμα "Άγιο" (Πράξ. 2,1-4). When the day of Pentecost came, they were all together in one place. Suddenly a sound like the blowing of a violent wind came from heaven and filled the whole house where they were sitting. They saw what seemed to be tongues of fire that separated and came to rest on each of them. All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit enabled them. (Acts 2,1-4)

The Book of Acts 20:16-18; WHEN THE DAY of Pentecost had come, they were all together in one place. And suddenly a sound came from heaven like the rush of a mighty wind, and it filled all the house where they were sitting. And there appeared to them tongues as of fire, distributed and resting on each one of them. And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance. Now there were dwelling in Jerusalem Jews, devout men from every nation under heaven. And at this sound the multitude came together, and they were bewildered, because each one heard them speaking in his own language. And they were amazed and wondered, saying, "Are not all these who are speaking Galileans? And how is it that we hear, each of us in his own native language? Parthians and Medes and Elamites and residents of Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia, Pontos and Asia, Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and the parts of Libya belonging to Cyrene, and visitors from Rome, both Jews and proselytes, Cretans and Arabians, we hear them telling in our own tongues the mighty works of God." The Great Vespers of Pentecost evening features three long prayers at which the faithful kneel for the first time since Easter. The Monday after Pentecost is the feast of the Holy Spirit in the Orthodox Church, and the Sunday after Pentecost is the feast of All Saints. This is the logical liturgical sequence since the coming of the Holy Spirit is fulfilled in men by their becoming saints, and this is the very purpose of the creation and salvation of the world. Thus says the Lord: Consecrate yourselves therefore, and be holy, for I your God am holy (Lev 11:44-45, 1 Pet 1:15-16). ** Η Πεντηκοστή άρχισε να γιορτάζεται από τους αποστολικούς χρόνους είτε στο ναό των Ιεροσολύμων μαζί με τους Ιουδαίους (Πράξεις 20,16), είτε χωριστά. Σύμφωνα με τους εκκλησιαστικούς Πατέρες και συγγραφείς του του 4ου αιώνα γίνεται λόγος περί του εορτασμού από τους αποστολικούς χρόνους όπου κατά την εορτή αυτή γινόταν και η βάπτιση των κατηχουμένων όπου και για το λόγο αυτό συνεχίζεται και ψάλλεται ο τρισάγιος ύμνος:"όσοι εις Χριστόν εβαπτίσθητε...". Η Πεντηκοστή είναι εβδομαδιαία εορτή δηλαδή εορτάζεται όλες τις ημέρες της εβδομάδας με ιδιαίτερη έξαρση το ΣάββατοΑπό τις μεθεόρτιες ημέρες ξεχωρίζει η Δευτέρα που είναι αφιερωμένη στο Άγιο Πνεύμα όπου και επαναλαμβάνεται ομοίως όλη η ακολουθία της Κυριακής. (Δεν νηστεύουμε Τετάρτη και Παρασκεύη την εβδομάδα της Πεντηκοστής).

4 Ἐκ τοῦ κατὰ jiwavnnou jagivou jeuaggelivou to ajnavgnwsma (17:1-13) Ἐκ τοῦ κατὰ Ἰωάννην. Τῇ ἐσχάτῃ ἡμέρᾳ τῇ μεγάλῃ τῆς ἑορτῆς εἱστήκει ὁ Ἰησοῦς καὶ ἔκραξεν λέγων Ἐάν τις διψᾷ ἐρχέσθω πρός με καὶ πινέτω. Ὁ πιστεύων εἰς ἐμέ καθὼς εἶπεν ἡ γραφή ποταμοὶ ἐκ τῆς κοιλίας αὐτοῦ ῥεύσουσιν ὕδατος ζῶντος. Τοῦτο δὲ εἶπεν περὶ τοῦ πνεύματος ὃ ἔμελλον λαμβάνειν οἱ πιστεύσαντες εἰς αὐτόν οὔπω γὰρ ἦν πνεῦμα ὅτι Ἰησοῦς οὐδέπω ἐδοξάσθη. Πάλιν οὖν αὐτοῖς ἐλάλησεν ὁ Ἰησοῦς λέγων Ἐγώ εἰμι τὸ φῶς τοῦ κόσμου ὁ ἀκολουθῶν ἐμοὶ οὐ μὴ περιπατήσῃ ἐν τῇ σκοτίᾳ ἀλλ ἕξει τὸ φῶς τῆς ζωῆς., The Reading is from John 17:1-13 On the last day of the feast, the great day, Jesus stood up and proclaimed, "If any one thirst, let him come to me and drink. He who believes in me, as the scripture has said, 'Out of his heart shall flow rivers of living water.'" Now this he said about the Spirit, which those who believed in him were to receive; for as yet the Spirit had not been given, because Jesus was not yet glorified. When they heard these words, some of the people said, "This is really the prophet." Others said, "This is the Christ." But some said, "Is the Christ to come from Galilee? Has not the scripture said that the Christ is descended from David, and comes from Bethlehem, the village where David was?" So there was a division among the people over him. Some of them wanted to arrest him, but no one laid hands on him. The officers then went back to the chief priest and Pharisees, who said to them, "Why did you not bring him?" The officers answered, "No man ever spoke like this man!" The Pharisees answered them, "Are you led astray, you also? Have any of the authorities or of the Pharisees believed in him? But this crowd, who do not know the law, are accursed." Nikodemos, who had gone to him before, and who was one of them, said to them, "Does our law judge a man without first giving him a hearing and learning what he does?" They replied, "Are you from Galilee too? Search and you will see that no prophet is to rise from Galilee." Again Jesus spoke to them saying, "I am the light of the world; he who follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life." The Divine Liturgy of Pentecost recalls our baptism into Christ with the verse from Galatians again replacing the Thrice-Holy Hymn. Special verses from the psalms also replace the usual antiphonal psalms of the liturgy. The epistle and gospel readings tell of the Spirit s coming to men. The kontakion sings of the reversal of Babel as God unites the nations into the unity of his Spirit. The troparion proclaims the gathering of the whole universe into God s net through the work of the inspired apostles. The hymn 0 Heavenly King is sung for the first time since Easter, calling the Holy Spirit to come and abide in us. The church building is decorated with flowers and the green leaves of the summer to show that God s divine Breath comes to renew all creation as the life creating Spirit. In Hebrew the word for Spirit, breath and wind is the same word, ruah.

5 Τα χαρίσματα του Αγίου Πνεύματος «...Καὶ εἰς τὸ πνεῦμα τὸ ἅγιον, τὸ κύριον καὶ ζωοποιόν, τὸ ἐκ τοῦ πατρὸς ἐκπορευόμενον, τὸ σὺν πατρὶ καὶ υἱῷ συμπροσκυνούμενον καὶ συνδοξαζόμενον, τὸ λαλῆσαν διὰ τῶν προφητῶν...» Την Δευτέρα μετά την Πεντηκοστή, η Εκκλησία μας εορτάζει το Άγιο Πνεύμα. Το Άγιο Πνεύμα είναι το τρίτο πρόσωπο της Αγίας Τριάδας, το οποίο εκπορεύεται εκ του Πατρός. Είναι ομοούσιο με τα πρόσωπα του Πατρός και του Υιού και κατά το Σύμβολο της Πίστεως «συνπροσκυνείται και συνδοξάζεται» με τον Πατέρα και με τον Υιό, ίσο κατά τη λατρεία και την τιμή. Μεγάλα είναι και ξεπερνούν την ανθρώπινη λογική τα χαρίσματα που μάς δώρισε σήμερα ο φιλάνθρωπος Θεός. Γι αυτό ας χαρούμε όλοι μαζί και σκιρτώντας από αγαλλίαση ας ανυμνήσουμε τον Κύριό μας. Γιατί η σημερινή ημέρα είναι για μάς εορτή και πανηγύρι.όπως δηλαδή διαδέχονται η μια την άλλη οι εποχές και οι κινήσεις του ήλιου, έτσι ακριβώς και στην Εκκλησία η μία εορτή διαδέχεται την άλλη και με τον τρόπο αυτό απ τη μια πηγαίνουμε στην άλλη. Πριν από λίγο καιρό εορτάσαμε τον σταυρό, το πάθος και την Ανάσταση, και ύστερα από αυτά την Ανάληψη του Κυρίου μας Ιησού Χριστού στους ουρανούς. Σήμερα φθάσαμε στην κορυφή των αγαθών, σ αυτήν την κορωνίδα των εορτών, βρισκόμαστε πια στην πραγματοποίηση των επαγγελιών του Κυρίου. «Γιατί αν φύγω λέει- θα σάς στείλω άλλον Παράκλητο, και δεν θα σάς αφήσω ορφανούς». (Ιωάν. 16,6). Βλέπετε το πατρικό Του ενδιαφέρον; Βλέπετε την ανέκφραστη φιλανθρωπία Του; Πριν λίγες ημέρες ανελήφθη στον ουρανό, κάθισε στον βασιλικό θρόνο, στα δεξιά του Πατρός, και σήμερα μάς στέλνει ως δώρο τα χαρίσματα του Αγίου Πνεύματος και μ αυτόν τον τρόπο μάς χορηγεί άπειρα ουράνια αγαθά. Γιατί, πες μου, ποιο από τα αγαθά που συμβάλλουν στη σωτηρία μας δεν μάς δόθηκε από το Άγιο Πνεύμα; Με τη χάρη Του απαλλασσόμαστε απ τη δουλεία του διαβόλου, καλούμαστε στην ελευθερία του Χριστού, οδηγούμαστε στην ουράνια υιοθεσία, αναγεννιόμαστε απ την αρχή και ξεφορτωνόμαστε το βαρύ και δυσβάστακτο φορτίο των αμαρτιών μας. Με τη χάρη του Αγίου Πνεύματος βλέπουμε να υπάρχουν τόσοι ιερείς κι έχουμε τάγματα διδασκάλων της Εκκλησίας. Απ την πηγή αυτή πήγασαν πλούτη προφητειών και χαρίσματα ιάσεων και όλα τα άλλα που συνήθως στολίζουν την Εκκλησία του Θεού από το Άγιο Πνεύμα προέρχονται. Και φωνάζει ο Παύλος και λέει: «Για όλα αυτά τα χαρίσματα ενεργεί το ένα και μοναδικό Πνεύμα, που τα μοιράζει όπως θέλει στον καθένα χωριστά» (Α Κορ. 12,11). «Όπως θέλει», λέει, όχι όπως έχει διαταχθεί. «Μοιράζει», και δεν μοιράζεται. Έχει εξουσία, και δεν εξουσιάζεται. Γιατί ο Παύλος λέει πως έχει και το Άγιο Πνεύμα την ίδια εξουσία, που έχει και ο Πατήρ. Κι όπως είπε για τον Πατέρα «ο Θεός είναι εκείνος που ενεργεί παντού και πάντα» (Α Κορ. 12,6), έτσι λέει και για το Άγιο Πνεύμα «για όλα αυτά τα χαρίσματα ενεργεί το ένα και μοναδικό Πνεύμα, που τα μοιράζει όπως θέλει στον καθένα χωριστά». Είδες τέλεια εξουσία που έχει; Γιατί όσα πρόσωπα έχουν την ίδια φύση και ουσία είναι φανερό ότι έχουν και την ίδια εξουσία, και όσα έχουν την ίδια αξία, σ αυτά μία είναι η δύναμη και η εξουσία. Χάρη στη δύναμη του Αγίου Πνεύματος απαλλαχτήκαμε από τις αμαρτίες, μ αυτήν ξεπλύναμε την ψυχή μας από κάθε ρύπο. Με τη δωρεά του Αγίου Πνεύματος, ενώ ήμασταν άνθρωποι, γίναμε άγγελοι, όσοι βέβαια θελήσαμε να μάς βοηθήσει η χάρη Του, χωρίς να αλλάξει η φύση μας, αλλά, κι αυτό είναι το πιο αξιοθαύμαστο, διατηρήσαμε την ανθρώπινη φύση μας και μ αυτή επιδείξαμε αγγελική συμπεριφορά. Τόσο μεγάλη είναι λοιπόν η δύναμη του Αγίου Πνεύματος! Και όπως η πραγματική φωτιά όταν δεχτεί τον μαλακό πηλό τον καθιστά σκληρό κεραμίδι, έτσι ακριβώς και η φωτιά του Αγίου Πνεύματος, όταν δεχτεί μια ψυχή συνετή, ακόμη κι αν τη βρει πιο μαλακή κι απ τον πηλό, την κάνει πιο γερή κι απ το σίδερο. Και κάνει ξαφνικά πιο καθαρό απ τον ήλιο εκείνον που έως τώρα ήταν μολυσμένος απ την ακαθαρσία των α- μαρτιών. «Με τη δύναμη του ονόματος του Κυρίου Ιησού Χριστού», λέει, «και με τη χάρη του Πνεύματος του Θεού μας». Είδες, αγαπητέ, τη δύναμη του Αγίου Πνεύματος; Είδες ότι το Άγιο Πνεύμα, εξαφάνισε όλες αυτές τις κακίες, και ότι εκείνους που ήταν προηγουμένως υποδουλωμένοι στις αμαρτίες τ ο υ ς, τ ο υ ς α ν έ β α σ ε ξ α φ ν ι κ ά σ ε τ ό σ ο υ ψ η λ έ ς τ ι μ έ ς ; Άγιος Ιωάννης ο Χρυσόστομος

6 The Gifts of the Holy Spirit The first gift of the Holy Spirit is faith, upon which the entire life of the Church is founded. This gift constitutes an ongoing reality. That is, the Holy Spirit acted not only on the fiftieth day after the resurrection of the Lord, on Pentecost, but acts and will continue to act throughout the entire course of human history. The faith, which is now and will be in the future of the Church, is always a gift of the Holy Spirit. Even the prayer of a believer is possible only with the intercession of the Spirit. The Spirit of God inspires the faithful to pray, having first implanted in their souls the truth of God the Father and the Son:"If there were no Holy Spirit, we could not confess that Jesus is Lord If there were no Holy Spirit, we who are faithful could not pray to God the Father When you call upon the Father, remember that you are able to do this because the Spirit has moved your soul and made you worthy of this consolation. Without the Spirit there would be no word of wisdom and knowledge in the Church. 'To one is given through the Spirit the utterance of wisdom, and to another the utterance of knowledge' (1 Cor. 12.8). There would be no shepherds and teachers in the Church without the Holy Spirit".The same holds true for the knowledge and the teaching of teachers in the Church, since this knowledge and teaching has to do with divine truth, which comes to the faithful by revelation. In the Church of the ages the faithful receive from the Spirit of God every type of gift and particularly the "gift of revelations." Whatever takes place for the salvation of mankind is attributed to the Holy Spirit: "For what, tell me, out of all those things that make up for our salvation, does not come from the Holy Spirit?" It is most characteristic when Chrysostom is commenting on the Letter to the Hebrews, Homily 16, to declare unequivocally and consciously that whatever he is analyzing and explaining to his audience are attributed to the Holy Spirit: "What I am saying is not mine, but belongs to the divine Spirit."In general, the Church itself exists and is realized in each place because the Holy Spirit is present and active. For example, the Holy Spirit, through the priests, activates the Holy Eucharist, the sacrifice which is not an "achievement" of "human nature," but of the grace of the Holy Spirit, coming mystically upon the holy gifts and "transforming them into a truly spiritual sacrifice.""if there were no Holy Spirit, the Church would not have been established. If there is a Church, it is clear that the Holy Spirit is present"."through the Holy Spirit we see choirs of priests, orders of teachers. From this same source we have the 'gifts of revelations' and the gift of healing. It is this same source that provides all the other gifts which adorn the Church of God".The fundamental work of the Holy Spirit, which unites man with Christ, is expressed by Chrysostom also with the observation that man could not have been saved with the work of angels, but only with the activity and the presence of the Son and the Holy Spirit. He expresses himself more concretely and explains that the renewal, the regeneration, the purification and the sanctification of man through the Holy Spirit does not mean some correction, or an "edification." As a decayed and unsound building needs rebuilding from the foundations, so also man cannot be simply "repaired," but must be "rebuilt from above," by the Holy Spirit."Alas, how we are baptized into evil, how we are unable to be cleansed, and how we must pray for a regeneration! For this is rebirth. No one simply tries to support a decaying building, or to repair old buildings, but razes them to the foundations and then builds them up anew. God has worked in the same way. He did not merely repair us, but rebuilt us from above. This is what is meant 'by the washing of regeneration and renewal of the Holy Spirit' (Tit. 3.5). He made us new from above. How? Through the Spirit."All of these justify Chrysostom's conviction that the Church exists as a perpetual Pentecost, by whose power the priests celebrate the Sacraments and the teachers teach, illumined by the Holy Spirit. ** This whole week is fast-free, and the Leave-taking of Pentecost occurs on Saturday.
