We are seeking individuals who would like to offer ministry to our Youth by teaching Sunday School. Those interested, call Fr. Demetri, Bessie Epes, Athena Karahalios or Tina White-Kennedy. The Nursery is available every Sunday. It is not staffed but it is open and it has a closed circuit TV. If you need anything, please call Presv. 5 SECOND HARVEST FOOD BANK OF NORTHWEST NC Dear Father Kangelaris, Thanks for joining Second Harvest Food Bank in our mission to reduce hunger and malnutrition in 18 counties across northwest North Carolina. Fitzgerald, Jr. Executive Director August: The Month of the Theotokos - To the Orthodox Christian August is a sacred month a month that brings with it a feeling of intensified reverence. It is the month of the Blessed Theotokos. For on the fifteenth of August the Orthodox Church celebrates the most solemn of feasts related to the Mother of God, namely, her repose or falling asleep. Special prayer services are held regularly during the first fifteen days of the month. It is a period of special fasting similar to Lent. Orthodox families are invited to attend these services and to participate in the fast. In commemorating her saints, the Church observes not the day of their birth, but rather the day of their death. Hence the feast day of St. Basil January 1 is the day on which St. Basel died. The reason for this, of course, is our belief that the day of death is our real birthday. It marks our entry into the real sphere of existence, namely, eternal and incorruptible life. And so it is for this reason that on the 15th of August we observe the falling asleep or the death of the Mother of God. We observe this feast joyfully because our Lord s Resurrection has shown us that death is not the end but the beginning of life. PARISH COUNCIL MEETING UPDATE The following items of note resulted from business discussed at the July 13, 2015 Parish Council meeting: Our Vacation Church School was a huge success! We had approximately 85 children in attendance. Considering to have it as a regional event next year with Winston- Salem, Greensboro and High Point Orthodox Churches. The Greek Orthodox Church in Knoxville is about one year away from being fully repaired from their recent fire. They have expressed gratitude for our financial assistance during this difficult time. New directory photo sessions will be held September 8-12 th and September th. Our preschool has had another very successful year. We are very proud of our little school community! AED update: thanks to the assistance of Dr. Mike Olympio, we now have two new IED devices installed at Annunciation (Breezeway & Hall) for use in the event of an emergency requiring them. People say that if you do not feel inclined to pray it is better not to pray; but this is crafty carnal sophistry. If you pray only when you are inclined to, you will cease praying altogether; this is what the flesh desires. The kingdom of heaven suffereth violence. You will not be able to work out your salvation without forcing yourself. - St. John of Kronstadt In this season we venerate our most Holy Theotokos. PLEASE HELP US REACH OUR GOAL Dear Ladies of Philoptochos, Summer is here and I hope everyone has or had an enjoyable and relaxing vacation. We are taking a break for the summer, but will start back with our kick off meeting in September. This year, we are going to change things up just a little bit and we will go over that at our next General Meeting. Our goal is to get as many young women involved with Philoptochos as possible. Our organization is a very strong part of our church and we must make sure that we continue to support our community. In June we sent 3 delegates to the Clergy Laity. All of us learned about many new programs that are going to be implemented both for Philoptochos and for our Parish in the coming years. This we will be sharing with everyone at one of the upcoming meetings. I am also pleased to announce, I will be serving on the Metropolis Philoptochos Board for another 2 year term. What an honor it will be to represent my community. We will have the Oath of Office for the new board in September. The board members that will be stepping down this term are Kim Karahalios, Penny Kaliviotis, Angela Kalamaras, Robin Swaim, Maria Mathes and Anna Giannopoulos. I personally want to thank these extraordinary women and the hard work that they put into serving on the board. For the next term the board members will be Leigh Cortesis, Effie Davis, Persephone Cortesis, Krissie Simcox, Kim Toompas, Cathy Cox, Martha Dentiste, Stacy Shepherd, Stacy Sechrest, Kiki Gonzales and Ann-Marie Dentiste-Speas. H.O.P.E is still busy every Saturday packing lunches and we have seen some new faces to come out and help. I have to make sure I thank two very important men that are there every Saturday to help make sure things run smoothly; they are Mike Georgoulias and Sam Vlahos. Their dedication is very much appreciated.
