PART A: SOME THEORETICAL ASPIRATIONS ABOUT CLIL Aims Rationale Content and Language Integrated Learning (CLIL) has become the umbrella term, describing both learning another (content) subject (such as Environmental Studies in our case) through the medium of a foreign language (i.e. English) and learning a foreign language (i.e. English) by studying a contentbased subject (i.e. Environmental Studies). In ELT, forms of CLIL have previously been known as Content-based instruction, English across the curriculum and Bilingual education. The basis of CLIL is that content subjects are taught and learnt in a language which is not the learners mother tongue. Language is integrated into the broad curriculum and its knowledge becomes the means of the learning content; it is seen in real-life situations, in which it can be acquired by students. It is, thus, natural language development which builds on other forms of learning, which is improved through increased motivation and the study of the natural language seen in context. CLIL is based on language acquisition rather than enforced learning. Moreover, when learners are interested in a topic, they are motivated to acquire language to communicate. Fluency now is more important than accuracy and errors are a natural part of language learning. Learners develop fluency in English by using it to communicate for a variety of purposes, while reading becomes the essential skill: CLIL draws on the lexical approach, encouraging learners to notice language while reading. Focus is on lexis rather than on grammar since language is related to the subject. Level and grading are unimportant; pre-, while- and post-reading tasks are as appropriate in the subject context as in the language context. The whole concept of CLIL is based around four principles of learning, known as the 4 Cs : Picture 1: The 4 Cs Communication: All children come to class with the potential to participate in a positive way. This increases personal investment and ownership of their learning, which helps make language more memorable in all subjects. We can encourage communication by setting the classroom up (seating, posters, resources) to support communication, scaffolding tasks which reduces stress and makes explorative tasks more manageable, providing learning opportunities that don t always [4]

have a right or wrong answer, offering choices about how to do things and reducing redundant teacher talking time (TTT), thus increasing student talking time (STT). Culture: It s important for children to feel that they can share and work as part of a group and that they have something in common with others in their class. This will build their respect for others and their own self-confidence. We can create a sense of community by getting children to collaborate on activities and share experiences, encouraging cooperation, help and respect within the group, rewarding risks and identifying learners' roles. Cognition: Children like to bring knowledge to the classroom and feel comfortable dealing with familiar subject matters but they also remember challenging situations better than easy tasks. Teaching them to think, give reasoning and build on existing knowledge builds confidence in the content and the language. Therefore, learning is complete when we use a range of thinking skills, the children s real life experiences with a manageable bridge between old and new, the children s own level of articulation, achievement and evaluation. Content: Children pay far more attention to the situation than to the language. Children learn through experiential activities and linking new information to existing knowledge inside and outside the classroom. Content needs to be natural, real or understandable, relate to the children s previous experiences, be engaging and allow for learning to be active and encourage language use as a vehicle to do things (role plays/tasks etc.). CLIL is concerned with the teaching of curricular subjects in a language other than that normally used - in our case, in English instead of Greek. The teachers are usually specialists in their own discipline and the focus is often on the subject rather than the language itself or on a balance between the two. This is an ever growing area and it has been found to be highly effective in all educational sectors. There are various significant advantages in using the CLIL approach. First of all, the wider cultural context is introduced and learners are prepared for future studies and / or working life and, of course, for internationalization. Their motivation in highly increased, while both their overall and specific language competence is improved. CLIL also develops learners multilingual interests and attitudes. Finally, methods and forms of classroom teaching and learning are diversified. Major differences arise between teaching English as a Foreign Language (EFL) and teaching CLIL. In the first case, learners need learning strategies (e.g. recording new terms), activities and materials focus on grammar and vocabulary practice, language is the main priority/aim when planning the lesson and assessment focuses exclusively on the language. In the second case, the topic dictates the language items to be taught (content-obligatory), topic knowledge is the main priority/aim of the [5]

lesson, learners need language for academic purposes (e.g. writing an argumentative essay) and assessment focuses on the topic as well. However, despite these differences, the two approaches share quite a lot of similarities as well. Learners need every day English for real-life situations, therefore they need language support, learning skills (e.g. note-taking, editing, critical thinking etc.); in addition, they should be involved and engaged in the learning process. Communication skills across the curriculum It is important for teachers to consider the language needs of their students so that they can give their learners the necessary tools to fully take part in the lessons. The teacher should consider what kind of grammatical structures or specific vocabulary students may need to learn a specific subject effectively. The aim is not to focus on teaching grammar or vocabulary all the time, and it's fine for learners to make mistakes with language. What is important to remember is that by providing learners with useful language, you will allow them to achieve content-driven tasks more effectively. In the classroom, it is important that students have the language they need to complete their tasks. The activity may be great on paper, but unless students can communicate their ideas to each other, it will not achieve the desired outcome. The success or failure of CLIL, therefore, can hinge on the provision of this functional language to students. Functional language is used frequently in the classroom (e.g. "Excuse me, I don't understand, I think..."). This language can be used for more natural, everyday purposes (such as asking the time, or borrowing a pen) or it can be more academic (e.g. comparing and contrasting). Picture 2: Examples of functional language In order to help learners understand the lesson content, texts need to be broken down into interactive manageable tasks and involve learners' input in predicting, agreeing, disagreeing, asking questions, etc.; the best way for that is to provide functional phrases so as to help learners. Teaching chunks of language to help learners complete a task follows the beliefs of the Lexical Approach. The basic principle of the Lexical Approach is: "Language is grammaticalised lexis, not lexicalised grammar" (Lewis 1993). In other words, lexis is central in creating meaning, while grammar plays a managerial role, telling us what order to put the words and phrases in. Therefore, we should spend more time helping learners develop their collection of phrases and less time on grammatical [6]

structures. Schmitt (2000) adds that "the mind stores and processes these [lexical] chunks as individual wholes." The mind is able to store large amounts of information in long-term memory, so it is much more efficient for the brain to recall a chunk of language as if it were one piece of information. PART B: CLILing the Environment A PRACTICAL APPLICATION While considering what kind of tasks and activities to include in the lessons, students abilities have been taken into consideration, both in terms of their communicative skills and of their ability to perform the tasks based on cognitive ability and context. The designed lessons, therefore, had to have outcomes that would cover: the content (e.g. naming the causes of air pollution, describing the effects of air pollution in our daily life, proposing ways of dealing with air pollution etc.); the language (e.g. using the passive to describe forms of environmental pollution, key vocabulary related to environmental pollution, cause and effect linkers to describe pollution effects etc.); and the learning skills (e.g. working cooperatively in small groups, developing a work plan to deliver a presentation, developing internet searching skills etc.). Lesson Planning Planning a CLIL lesson is, in many ways, similar to planning a non-clil lesson: clear aims, a range of good activities and step-by-step procedures are needed. Picture 3: The components of a CLIL lesson plan However, in a CLIL lesson, the balance between language and content, as well as the type of CLIL approach to be used, need to be carefully considered. A great number of different factors were taken into consideration when planning the proposed lessons. The learning objectives were provided by the school syllabus and a specific textbook syllabus had to be followed; however, the important thing for the teacher was to find a suitable way to approach this content in class so as to make it meaningful and memorable for young learners. While planning the lessons, five stages were gone through: 1. Identification of the learning objectives 2. Identification of the challenges 3. Breaking challenges down [7]

4. Using a memorable context 5. Providing ample language support One of the main goals was to create effective learners; therefore, certain skills and strategies had to be developed which would enable students to process and remember information in the most efficient way. Everybody learns in a different way; however, there are skills and strategies that can be useful for every type of learner. The present class is a mixed-ability one, so several profiles of typical learners can be found in it, which had to be taken into consideration while planning each lesson: The slow readers who read every sentence word by word, often getting frustrated when coming across a word they don t know or feeling overwhelmed when texts are long and dense and they fail reading comprehension tests; Students who make careless mistakes while writing essays; they often rush their work without planning first and they never make more than one draft; Students who enjoy trying to solve puzzles or mysteries. They are very good at brainstorming ideas or possible theories so as to come up with the correct answer/solution and they aren t afraid of asking questions or disagreeing with their teacher when they feel that the answer provided is incorrect; Students who ask questions all the time - before, during and after a task, often using their natural curiosity to motivate themselves to find out more; and Students who love research and project work. Usually, they excel at making graphs and charts to display the information they have found and are also very good at interpreting information they find from these diagrams. While designing the actual lessons, classifying learning objectives had to be seriously taken into consideration. Therefore, the proposed lessons were based on Bloom s taxonomy (1950, revised in 1958). The taxonomy divides educational objectives into several categories but the one that I was concerned with is the Cognitive objective, which focuses on knowledge, comprehension and critical thinking. Picture 4: Bloom s taxonomy In CLIL, it is important to avoid translation or rote learning and teach students how to think instead; they need to be able to interpret information, select the most important details and use a [8]

wide range of language so as to describe the trends they see. This means that each lesson had to include tasks that would help students develop these thinking skills. Therefore, during lesson planning, the following six stages, described in Bloom s taxonomy, were taken into account: Remembering: Recognising, listing, describing, identifying, retrieving, naming, finding, defining. Students had to do some brainstorming activities, making lists of key words. Understanding: Comparing, explaining, classifying, exemplifying, summarizing. In their group, students had to make a cartoon, describing air pollution and its consequences. Application: Implementing, carrying out, using. Through drawing, students had to construct their own theory as to what are the causes of environmental pollution. Analysis: Comparing, organising, outlining, finding, structuring, integrating. After being presented with different solutions for environmental protection, students had to make their own diagram, comparing their opinions to those proposed during the lesson. Evaluation: Checking, hypothesizing, experimenting, judging, testing, monitoring. Through questionnaires and worksheets, students had to assess whether they thought that air pollution was a major problem in their neighbourhood or not and then propose suitable solutions. Creation: Making, designing, constructing, planning, producing, inventing. Students were asked to write a short environmental story in order to use what they have been taught. Creative thinking was ranked as the highest order thinking and a lot of time was dedicated to developing this skill and providing students with the appropriate language support; enabling students to become more self-confident in expressing themselves rather just listing facts was highly important. Activities that promote learning skills resources were used in all lessons. Students, hypothesizing, were asked to guess what thinking/learning skills they might find in the digital extracts; through skimming, they had to check their predictions quickly by reading the next task content; through matching tasks and ordering, students practised their organization and classification skills; through looking at a number of statements and marking their beliefs on a cline before discussing their answers in class, students also practised evaluation and communication skills; finally, watching short videos, they were given the opportunity to find out if the creator s view was the same as their own. There is evidence that pre-teaching key vocabulary before reading or listening to new information helps understanding and retention. It has also been proven that it is easier for learners to acquire language when it is presented within authentic contexts (rather than using abstract sentences to demonstrate grammar). Therefore, when planning the proposed lessons in English, it was important to: identify key vocabulary that will help learners understand the content objectives; [9]

recognise language patterns that are naturally occurring in classroom texts; analyse the purpose of a written or spoken task and provide language (vocabulary and grammatical) support for learners. Important vocabulary was presented in a variety of ways such as pictures, mime and gesture, definitions, synonyms, translation, guessing meaning from context and using learners prior knowledge on environmental issues. When teaching Environmental Studies as a school Greek subject, the coursebook is considered to be the main resource. However, in order to make the most of my teaching, when teaching the subject in English, I felt the need to develop a range of ways to present or record information which could be adapted in my classes. Supplementing the coursebook with other kinds of material was a way of helping my students maintain their interest in the lesson. Authentic materials were used in class because they are up-to-date, relevant and can change the focus of the lesson into something more communicative and related to our everyday life; short videos were adapted so as to become more accessible to my learners. Gradually, I came to the conclusion that the use of visual organisers could help me convey language and content in a friendly and meaningful way to my students. Visual organisers proved to be valuable as they helped show connections between ideas, they had no unnecessary information and were, therefore, simpler and, being visual, aided students memory. When exploiting the teaching material, a number of activities were used in the classroom: multiple choice, a very common question format, used in reading or listening tasks; matching, often used when learning new items of vocabulary or new concepts. Learners have to match words/phrases/etc. together; classifying, used when checking students knowledge and/or understanding. As well as classifying into known categories (e.g. types of pollution, causes and effects), students were also asked to classify terms into, for example, I know this, I'm not sure or I don't know this type categories; freeze frame/stills, used as a video activity: the video extract is stopped at a certain point and learners have to analyse what is going on, what the characters are thinking, what they think is going to happen next etc.; interviews, taken by students from relatives and friends, shedding more light into pollution in their neighbourhood, for example; labelling, used when checking that learners understand, as well as when wishing to help visual learners; [10]

poster presentations, a kind of project work, used as an enjoyable way for learners to transfer information; prediction, used as an excellent way to prepare learners for reading or listening tasks. Allowing students to discuss the title, images, or some content words taken from the extract provides them with support and makes the video extract easier to deal with; questionnaires with questions provide by the teacher, used before and after teaching Environmental Studies through CLIL table completion, used with reading and listening tasks; true/false, often used in reading and listening tasks. 18 LESSON PLAN (Applicable to all four units) Language Outcomes Content Language Learning skill Learners can describe causes and possible solutions on different environmental problems. Learners can use cause and effect linkers to describe the effects of pollution. Learners can work cooperatively in groups. Personal aim Educational aims Timetable fit Group profile Assumptions Want to try out open pair/group feedback technique when checking some activities. Students become sensitive about current environmental problems, express their opinion regarding major causes of environmental pollution and offer suggestions / possible solutions to these problems. A series of units dealing with important environmental problems our planet faces. There are 24 students in one class, 8 boys and 16 girls, and 19 in the other, 10 girls and 9 boys. Students are elementary (A2) level English learners. They have enough of the key vocabulary to discuss environment but their writing is imprecise therefore needs work. Cause and effect linkers will also be new to most of them. Anticipated problems and solutions Materials Learners may be slow to start the brainstorm, therefore some information will be put on the classroom whiteboard to help; learners may be unsure of some key vocabulary in the presented videos, therefore a matching definition and word task will be done prior to watching. Environmental Studies Student s Book, Sheets of blank paper (A3), Worksheets, Videos, Computer, Whiteboard, Projector [18]

LESSON 1 UNIT 5: WE AND THE ENVIRONMENT Duration: one (1) teaching hour [45 minutes] Educational Aims: Students are asked to: activate learners prior knowledge elicit the problem of pollution note down all the forms of environmental pollution they can think of watch relevant videos talk about environmental pollution Procedure The teacher shows students photos of planet Earth elicits the problem of pollution. Brainstorming: The teacher gives out A4 paper to the learners groups & two minutes to note down all the forms of environmental pollution they can think of. The teacher then elicits some ideas from each group. The teacher presents the most important forms of environmental pollution - YouTube video: «Πάρε το μήνυμα» ( Class discussion. Learners watch a video about pollution ( - The teacher asks them to do some matching on handouts and then elicits the correct answers. Homework is assigned - Formation of 3 learner groups: Group A: sources of pollution & relevant human activity; Group B: interviews on air pollution; Group C: watch & write down traffic in their neighbourhood. [19]

LESSON 2 UNIT 6: AIR POLLUTION Duration: two (2) teaching hours [45 minutes each] Educational Aims: Students are asked to: realise that certain human activity causes atmospheric pollution and pinpoint major sources of atmospheric pollution in the place where they live discuss the consequences of atmospheric pollution on the environment (people nature) suggest ways to deal with the problem Procedure 1 st Teaching session Students examine the drawing, then discuss and write down (in their group) possible sources of air pollution (factories, car fumes, block-of-flats chimneys, plane gases, pesticides, fires, smoking in enclosed spaces etc.). Students are divided into three groups, each of which is assigned a different task to research and report on: Group A focuses on sources of pollution and relevant human activity; Group B takes interviews from inhabitants about air pollution; Group C watches and then writes down traffic in their neighbourhood. 2 nd Teaching session Students present, in class, the results of their research and then a discussion follows on whether the air in their neighbourhood is polluted or not. Questions naturally arise such as: Which means of transport pollute the air the most?, Which means of transport are more environmentallyfriendly? Students make suggestions for cleaner air in their area and, if possible, they cooperate, based on their survey results, to create a poster (possibly an interactive one through Glogster) about a cleaner atmosphere, which they are, then, going to hang on the school notice board. Students talk about problems caused by air pollution both on living and non-living elements of an ecosystem. They mention and locate on the map different areas in Greece where air pollution is increased. [28]

LESSON 3 UNIT 7: RUBBISH THERE ARE SOLUTIONS! Duration: one (1) teaching hour [45 minutes] Educational Aims: Students are asked to: become sensitive about the problem of rubbish in their immediate environment as well as globally assess the importance of recycling everyday material for environmental protection apply simple recycling practices in their everyday lives, pointing out when a certain material can be recycled Procedure Brainstorming: In their group, students are asked to think and write down words related to rubbish (introduction to rubbish management issue). Students check the class rubbish bin, trace several rubbish and note down the material they are made of, then talk about where all this rubbish comes from Students then talk about the problem of rubbish increase and suggest possible solutions. Students talk about the text from their student s book regarding rubbish selection before recycling and note down, under each rubbish bin, the basic recycled material (glass, paper, aluminium). Students are asked to propose ways that rubbish can be re-used. Students examine different packages so as to come to conclusions about the possibility of reducing rubbish by selecting appropriate packaging. [29]

LESSON 4 UNIT 8: WATER, VALUABLE DROPS Duration: two (2) teaching hours [45 minutes each] Educational Aims: Students are asked to: recognize the importance of water for human life and activity identify the problem caused by the irrational waste of water discuss ways and practices they can adopt themselves to save on water Procedure 1 st Teaching session: It focuses on water distribution on Earth, its necessity and the ways it is used. Students, in groups, talk about the usefulness of water on people, plants and animals. Based on their experiences, students talk about the difficulties we face when there is no running water. First, students locate on the globe areas where there is water (oceans, rivers, lakes, frozen arctic areas), distinguishing salty from drinking water. Next, they talk about the two short texts (the caption on the Earth photo and the newspaper headline) which refer to the necessity of water for life. Water is necessary for life and, at the same time, its existence is a proof for the existence of life. Finally, an activity takes place, through which the analogy between salty and drinking water is presented: in two similar, transparent jars we put 970 cc and 30 cc of water respectfully. We label the first jar as SALTY WATER and the second as DRINKING WATER. 2 nd Teaching session Students, in groups, write down ways we use water at home, in our city and in the countryside. They are expected to trace differences both in the amount of water used and the level of water necessity for various purposes (watering fountains). Next, they talk about instances when the use of water could be characterized as a waste. Students, in groups, talk about and present ways of saving water in different circumstances and conditions.

We got on the bus and started our trip, being very cheerful as it was a sunny day and the temperature was ideal.

The trip was very pleasant.

We reached a small paradise!

The signs wrote: Keep the environment clean! and I love and protect the forest We were all laughing and nobody wanted to sleep. Suddenly, we heard a knock on the window. [57]

Το επόμενο πρωί ξυπνήσαμε από τα τιτιβίσματα των πουλιών. Κοιτάζοντας έξω από το παράθυρο, είδαμε ένα κόκκινο πουλί, καθισμένο στο κλαδί ενός δέντρου, να κελαηδάει τόσο όμορφα που κυριολεκτικά μας μάγεψε. A red bird was singing on the tree branch. Ακούσαμε όμως και κάτι άλλους παράξενους θορύβους. Βγήκαμε έξω και είδαμε στο πίσω μέρος μια μικρή λιμνούλα που μέσα της κολυμπούσαν μερικές πάπιες με τα μικρά τους, κάνοντας πολύ θόρυβο. Φάγαμε το πρωινό μας χαζεύοντας τα ατέλειωτα τσαλαβουτήματα των παπιών. We got ready and started our second explorations to the other side of the forest. [58]

A lot of trees were cut down.

We saw that you had left your axe there and we figured that out, we said.

It s time to save the forest! [61]
