5 THE RESURRECTION OF CHRIST IS THE ANNIHILATION OF DEATH By Protopresbyter Fr. George Metallinos, Dean of the Athens University School of Theology The most significant event of History: The Resurrection of Christ is the most significant event to take place in History. It is the event that differentiates Christianity from every other religion. Other religions have mortal leaders, whereas the Head of the Church is the Resurrected Christ. Resurrection of Christ implies the deification and the resurrection of human nature, and the hope for deification and resurrection of our own hypostasis. Since the medicine has been discovered, then there is hope for life. Through Christ s Resurrection, both life and death take on a new meaning. Life now means communion with God; Death is no longer the end of this present lifetime, but the distancing of Man from Christ. The separation of the soul from the mortal body is no longer seen as death ; it is only a temporary slumber. It is Christ s Resurrection, which justifies His uniqueness and exclusiveness, as the Saviour Who is able to truly vitalize us and transfuse His Death-defeating Life into our perishable lives. Christ is one; the Resurrection is one; and the possibility for salvation-deification is also one. This is why our expectation to transcend all the impasses that muddle our lives is oriented towards Christ; to the Christ of the Saints; to the Christ of History. The distorted Christ found in heresies or the relativized Christ found in the religious syncretism of the New-Age pan-religion constitute a rejection of the real Christ, as well as the Salvation offered by Him. The Christ of our Saints is also the Christ of History, and He rules out every possibility of confusing Him with all the other redemptive substitutes invented for misleading the masses; because that is the only way deception can maintain something fraudulent: by facilitating the dominion of antichrist powers (which may quite easily have infiltrated even the Church); powers, which albeit spread Death in their path, nevertheless can appear as angels of light and deacons of justice. When studying the experience of our Saints, we become aware that there are no existences as tragic as those who have no hope hope for resurrection inasmuch as they regard biological death as destruction and the end. Unfortunately, science has also succumbed to this tragic state, by desperately seeking methods for prolonging Man s lifespan and by conveying the illusion of being able to overcome natural death. However, equally tragic are those even Christians who become entrapped in hermetically tight Chiliast visions of universal bliss and mundane eschatology (thus losing the true meaning of the Resurrection) and sacrificing the hyper-cosmic to the endo-cosmic; the eternal to the transient. The Resurrection of Christ as the resurrection of Man and all of Creation acquires a meaning only in the framework of Patristic soteriology; in other words, in the co-crucifixion and the co-resurrection with Christ. This is the way that Hellenism also preserved the Resurrection during its historical course. Forever faithful to the Resurrection of Christ, Orthodoxy has been characterized as Church of the Resurrection, because it is on the Resurrection that it structures its entire historical presence, grafting the resurrectional hope into the conscience of Peoples; a fact that is revealed in their cultural continuance. Among them, the Hellenic People also learnt to dispel - in the Light of the Resurrection the darkness that permeated their years of slavery (as was the Turkish occupation) during which, they would not hesitate, on wishing each other Christ is Risen! to add: and Hellas is risen! And they preserved this, for a full four hundred years It is within this notional framework that the hope-filled invitation of Come forth and receive Light! is contained. It is an invitation to the resurrectional, uncreated Light, which is bestowed only on those who have cleansed their heart of vices and passions. Without the catharsis of the heart in other words, repentance one cannot commune with the Light of the Resurrection. Repentance is the transcending of sin, the cause of our death. This is the fact that we are constantly reminded of, by the peculiar (to the uninitiated ear) monastic saying: If you die before you die, then you will not die when you die! Christ is Risen!! 5

Γεωργίου Μεταλληνού, Κοσμήτορος Θεολογικής Σχολής Αθηνών Το μεγαλύτερο γεγονός της Ιστορίας: Η Ανάσταση του Χριστού είναι το μεγαλύτερο γεγονός μέσα στην Ιστορία. Είναι αυτό που διαφοροποιεί τον Χριστιανισμό από οποιαδήποτε άλλη θρησκεία. Οι άλλες θρησκείες έχουν αρχηγούς θνητούς, ενώ κεφαλή της Εκκλησίας είναι ο Αναστημένος Χριστός. «Ανάσταση του Χριστού» σημαίνει θέωση και ανάσταση της ανθρώπινης φύσεως και ελπίδα της θέωσης και ανάστασης της δικής μας υποστάσεως. Αφού βρέθηκε το φάρμακο, υπάρχει ελπίδα ζωής. Δια της Αναστάσεως του Χριστού αποκτά άλλο νόημα και η ζωή και ο θάνατος. Ζωή σημαίνει κοινωνία με τον Θεό. Δεν είναι πλέον θάνατος το τέλος της παρούσας ζωής, αλλά η απομάκρυνση του ανθρώπου από τον Χριστό. Ο χωρισμός της ψυχής από το σώμα δεν είναι θάνατος, αλλά προσωρινός ύπνος. Η Ανάσταση του Χριστού δικαιώνει τη μοναδικότητα και αποκλειστικότητά Του ως Σωτήρα, ικανού να ζωοποιήσει αληθινά, να μεταγγίσει την καταλύτρια του θανάτου Ζωή Του στη φθαρτή ζωή μας. Ένας ο Χριστός, μία η Ανάσταση, μία και η δυνατότητα σωτηρίας-θέωσης. Γι αυτό και προσανατολίζεται στον Χριστό η προσδοκία για την υπέρβαση των αδιεξόδων που συμμίγουν τη ζωή μας. Στον Χριστό των Αγίων, τον Χριστό της Ιστορίας. Ο αλλοιωμένος «Χριστός» των αιρέσεων ή ο «σχετικοποιημένος» Χριστός του θρησκειακού συγκρητισμού της νεοεποχικής πανθρησκείας συνιστά απόρριψη του αληθινού Χριστού και της προσφερόμενης από Αυτόν Σωτηρίας. Ο Χριστός των Αγίων μας είναι ο Χριστός και της Ιστορίας και αποκλείει κάθε σύγχυσή Του με οποιαδήποτε λυτρωτικά υποκατάστατα που επινοούνται για την παραπλάνηση των μαζών. Διότι μόνο έτσι μπορεί η πλάνη να συντηρεί την απάτη, διευκολύνοντας την κυριαρχία αντίχριστων δυνάμεων (μπορεί να έχουν εισχωρήσει ακόμα και στην Εκκλησία) που σκορπίζουν μεν τον θάνατο, αλλά εμφανίζονται ως «άγγελοι φωτός» και «διάκονοι δικαιοσύνης». Μέσα από την εμπειρία των Αγίων μας συνειδητοποιούμε ότι δεν υπάρχουν τραγικότερες υπάρξεις από τους «μη έχοντας ελπίδα» - ελπίδα ανάστασης, βλέποντας τον βιολογικό θάνατο ως καταστροφή και τέλος. Σ αυτή την τραγικότητα υποκύπτει δυστυχώς και η επιστήμη, αναζητώντας απεγνωσμένη μεθόδους για παράταση της ζωής και μεταδίδοντας την ψευδαίσθηση υπερνίκησης του φυσικού θανάτου. Εξίσου όμως τραγικοί είναι και όσοι ακόμη και Χριστιανοί - παγιδεύονται στα στεγανά χιλιαστικών οραμάτων καθολικής ευημερίας και ενδοκοσμικής εσχατολογίας, χάνοντας το αληθινό νόημα της Ανάστασης και θυσιάζοντας το υπερκόσμιο στο ενδοκομικό και το αιώνιο στο πρόσκαιρο. Η Ανάσταση του Χριστού ως ανάσταση και του ανθρώπου και σύνολης της κτίσης αποκτά νόημα μόνο στο πλαίσιο της Αγιοπατερικής σωτηριολογίας. Στη συσταύρωση δηλαδή και συνανάσταση με τον Χριστό. Έτσι βιώνει την Ανάσταση και ο Ελληνισμός στην ιστορική του πορεία. Πιστή στην Ανάσταση του Χριστού η Ορθοδοξία, έχει χαρακτηριστεί «Εκκλησία της Αναστάσεως», διότι οικοδομεί εκεί όλη την ιστορική της παρουσία, εμβολιάζοντας στη συνείδηση των Λαών της την αναστάσιμη ελπίδα, κάτι που φανερώνεται στην πολιτιστική της συνέχεια. Ανάμεσά τους και ο Ελληνικός Λαός έμαθε να διαλύει στο Φως της Ανάστασης τα σκοτάδια της δουλείας του, όπως στην Τουρκοκρατία, όταν στο «Χριστός Ανέστη» δεν απόσταινε να προσθέτει: «και Ελλάς ανέστη!» Και αυτό για τετρακόσια χρόνια. Σε αυτό το νοηματικό πλαίσιο κινείται η ελπιδοφόρα εκείνη πρόσκληση: «Δεύτε λάβετε Φως!». Είναι η πρόσκληση στο αναστάσιμο άκτιστο Φως, που το δέχονται όσοι έχουν καθαρίσει την καρδιά τους από τις κακίες και τα πάθη. Χωρίς την «κάθαρση» της καρδιάς, δηλαδή, τη μετάνοια, δεν μπορεί να κοινωνήσει κάποιος το Αναστάσιμο Φως. Μετάνοια είναι η υπέρβαση της αμαρτίας, της αιτίας κάθε θανάτου μας. Αυτό μας υπενθυμίζει διαρκώς ο περίεργος στα ώτα των αμύητων μοναστηριακός λόγος: «Ε, αν πεθάνεις πριν πεθάνεις, δεν θα πεθάνεις όταν πεθάνεις»! Χριστός Ανέστη!! 6

7 Scholars estimate there are over 33,000 groups today who lay claim to be the Church, or at least descendants of the Church described in the New Testament. Repeat: 33,000! But for the first thousand years of her history the Church was essentially one. Five historic patriarchal centers Jerusalem, Antioch, Rome, Alexandria, and Constantinople formed a cohesive whole and were in full communion with one another. There were occasional heretical or schismatic groups going their own way, to be sure, but the Church was unified until after the eleventh century. Then, in events culminating in A.D. 1054, the Roman Patriarch pulled away from the other four, pursuing his long-developing claim of universal headship of the Church. Today, nearly a thousand years later, the other four Patriarchate remain intact, in full communion, maintaining that Orthodox Apostolic Faith of the inspired New Testament record. 10 community news METROPOLIS SCHOLARSHIP All the university and college students in our community that are not currently in their last year of studies can apply for this Scholarship, so that they may benefit from this great opportunity that the Metropolis extends to them. Last year s winner of a $500 scholarship from our parish was Alicia Marinis. Deadline is May 21, See Fr. Nikolaos for details. DRIVERS We have a several people, mostly seniors, who wish to attend the Wednesday and Friday evening services during Holy Week. However, they are unable to for various reasons, such as the inability to drive at night or the fear of traveling alone, as well as many other logical reasons. We need drivers to help get these people to church and back. Please call Fr. Nikolaos to donate your time for those who cannot make it to church. Jesus said, Carry each other's burdens, and in this way you will fulfill the law of Christ (Galatians 6:2). I don t think the message can be clearer. Call Fr. Nikolaos to coordinate you as a driver with your passengers. JERUSALEM TRIP July 8 18, Only 10 seats left! The St. Demetrios Greek Orthodox Community in Winnipeg and Fr. PRIVACY ACT Every year we receive several requests from our members for the church mailing list in order to save time to find and mail out invitations (for weddings, baptisms, etc). We have recently been informed that we as a community are legally bound by the Privacy Act and the Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act (PIPEDA) to keep this information private and for church use only. As a community council we will respect the law and your privacy; thus the church mailing list will not be available for anything other than official community related correspondence only.
