Did you know that none of these Outreach efforts could be possible without donations and volunteers like yourselves? 6 Πώς να μοιράσω το ψωμί; (αληθινή ιστορία) Τούτες τις μέρες που την πατρίδα μας τη δέρνει η φτώχεια και η πείνα, η Χρυσούλα, μεγάλη ώριμη γυναίκα με δική της τώρα οικογένεια, φέρνει στο νου της τη συγχωρεμένη τη γιαγιά της. Χρυσούλα την έλεγαν κι εκείνη, με παππού ιερέα ευλαβικό τον ονομαστό παπα-γιώργη τον Διακουμάτο στην περιοχή της Οιτύλου στη Λακωνία. Απ' το στόμα του παπα-γιώργη έβγαινε πάντα χρυσάφι ο θείος λόγος του Ευαγγελίου. Αυτόν έσπερνε παντού και γλύκαινε τους πονεμένους. Στη μικρή του τη Χρυσούλα έκανε μαθήματα μέσα από την Αγία Γραφή, το Οκτωήχι και το Ψαλτήρι. Τι στιγμές ήταν εκείνες! Σμίλευε ο ακούραστος λευΐτης με τη σμίλη του Πνεύματος την άκακη και αθώα ψυχή της εγγονούλας του, την μάθαινε να αγαπά τον Θεό, να συγχωρεί τους ανθρώπους, να σκορπίζει καλοσύνες σε εχθρούς και φίλους. Ποτέ δεν ξεχνούσε -η μακαρίτισσα τώρα- γιαγιά τη μεγάλη μορφή του ιερέα παππού της που για το χωριό δεν ήταν μόνο παπάς αλλά και δάσκαλος και συμφιλιωτής και παρηγορητής, άγγελος ήταν για όλο το χωριό τους ο παπα-γιώργης.9,(v8tf, 0 :46DZ Έκανε τη δική της οικογένεια, και έμενε στο Ελαιοχώρι. Τέσσερα κορίτσια και ένα αγόρι της είχε χαρίσει ο Πανάγαθος. Μικρά ήταν όλα τότε. Πού να τ' αφήσει; Τα χωράφια τους είχαν απαιτήσεις. Ήθελαν χέρια δυνατά και σκληρά να τα δουλεύουν. Και κείνα άμειβαν. Και δίναν πλούσιο τον καρπό τους για να τρέφουν τη φτωχή οικογένειά τους. Η Χρυσούλα ήταν πρώτη στο νοικοκυριό. Δεν υστερούσε όμως και στα αγροτικά. Ποτέ δεν ήθελε ν' αφήνει τον άνδρα της μόνο του. Έτρεχε και αυτή από κοντά του. Πρωί-πρωί, πριν ακόμη καλά-καλά φέξει ο ήλιος, ξεκινούσε με τη δροσιά. Από κοντά και τα παιδιά τους, μικρούλια τότε. Τ' άφηνε ξένοιαστα να παίζουν με τα χώματα ή να κυνηγάνε πεταλούδες ή άλλοτε να παίζουν κρυφτό στα χαλάσματα του φράχτη του κτήματος. Και κατά το μεσημεράκι όταν έφθανε η ώρα του φαγητού, μάζευε γύρω τα μικρά της. Έκαναν όλοι μαζί το σταυρό τους κι έλεγαν το «Πάτερ ημών». Σε κάποιο γεύμα έβγαλε από το ταγάρι της το καλοζυμωμένο καρβέλι και κοίταξε τα παιδιά της στα μάτια. Πάντα είχε ένα μικρό λόγο σοφό να τους πει την ώρα εκείνη. Αυτή τη φορά όμως τους είπε κάτι άλλο: «Αυτό το καρβέλι είναι δικό σας! Πώς θέλετε, παιδιά μου, να σας το μοιράσω το ψωμί, σαν Θεός ή σαν άνθρωπος;». Και κείνα μ' ένα στόμα είπαν: «Μαμά, σαν Θεός!». Γιατί ήξεραν, το 'χαν μάθει καλά το μάθημα, ότι ο Θεός είναι Πατέρας καλοκάγαθος που όλα τα μοιράζει δίκαια. Και ήθελαν να απολαύσουν τη δίκαιη μοιρασιά του Θεού.Πήρε λοιπόν το καρβέλι η μάννα, το σταύρωσε, το ασπάστηκε με ευλάβεια (έτσι έκανε πάντα) και άρχισε μετά να κόβει με το χέρι της και να δίνει στο καθένα το μερίδιό του. Τα μικρά πεινασμένα άρπαξαν με λαχτάρα το ψωμάκι και έβαλαν την πρώτη μπουκιά κιόλας στο στόμα. Όμως η μάννα φρόντισε ν' αφήσει εκείνη την ημέρα περίσσευμα το μισό καρβέλι. Τα μικρά τρώγοντας λοξοκοιτούσαν το ένα το άλλο αν κρατούσαν όλα την ίδια μερίδα. Είδαν μετά τη μητέρα τους που καλοδίπλωσε πίσω τους το υπόλοιπο μισό καρβέλι και το 'βαλε βιαστικά πάλι μέσα στο ταγάρι. Και εκείνα απορημένα ρώτησαν: «Μαμά, γιατί μας στέρησες τη δίκαιη μοιρασιά; Εμείς σου είπαμε να μας μοιράσεις το ψωμί σαν Θεός, όχι σαν άνθρωπος». Κι εκείνη με σοβαρότητα απάντησε: «Καλά μου παιδιά, σαν Θεός σας το μοίρασα. Ο Θεός φροντίζει για όλα τα παιδιά του κόσμου, και για κείνα που δεν έχουν να φάνε. Το υπόλοιπο καρβέλι ο Θεός θέλει να το πάμε στα φτωχά παιδάκια». Έκπληκτα άκουσαν τα μικρά το μεγάλο μάθημα για την αγάπη. Και έτρεξαν αμέσως με χαρά να βοηθήσουν στις φτωχογειτονιές του χωριού όσα παιδάκια δεν είχαν να φάνε. Κι αυτό δεν το 'καναν μόνο μία φορά...πέρασαν από τότε πολλά χρόνια. Δεν ζουν κείνες οι αγιασμένες μορφές που έζησαν στη φτώχεια αλλά ήταν τόσο πλούσιες. Έφυγαν! Έφυγαν και μας άφησαν κληρονομιά βαριά, ατίμητη σε αξία, παράδειγμα ψυχής αρχοντικής, που ξέρει να αγαπά και να σκορπίζει όπως ο Θεός δώρα και καλοσύνες με δικαιοσύνη σε όλο τον κόσμο. Τούτες τις μέρες πού την πατρίδα μας τη δέρνει η φτώχεια και η πείνα, η Χρυσούλα, η ώριμη γυναίκα, τα θυμήθηκε όλα. Και τα λέει στις φίλες της όλα όσα ζούσαν και έκαναν τότε οι παλιοί, οι φτωχοί οι δικοί μας πρόγονοι και... η δική της γιαγιά. Σήμερα τα θυμήθηκε όλα ξανά καθώς είδε κάτω από την πόρτα του σπιτιού της προσκλητήριο αγάπης, τυπωμένο χαρτί από τον εφημέριο της ενορίας της, που έλεγε: «Σήμερα κανένας να μη μείνει πεινασμένος στην ενορία μας. Βοήθησε και συ όσο μπορείς». Βούρωσε!... Είναι και αυτή πνιγμένη στα χρέη, όμως το ψωμί στο φτωχό θα το δίνει και αυτή. Ζυμωμένο από τα δικά της τα χέρια. Κάθε μέρα θα το πηγαίνει στον καλό τους ιερέα πού γνωρίζει καλά τα ανήμπορα σπίτια!... Περιοδικό «ο Σωτήρ», Τεύχος Ιανουάριος

7 Spaces and Rests by Paula Marchman, MA, LPC In 1 Corinthians 13:4,5: Love suffers long and is kind; love does not envy: love does not parade itself, is not puffed up; does not behave rudely, does not seek its own, is not provoked, thinks no evil When we think of connections in our life we gravitate to our relationships with others, our spouses, children, parents, friends, etc. If you stop to think about how you communicate with other people you will realize the importance of becoming aware of the connection you have with yourself and God who created you. My mother taught me at an early age to read stories out loud with expression, and to inflect my voice so that the words came alive in the telling of the story. She would laugh as I rolled quickly through all the words. She gently instructed me about the importance of the spaces between the words. Spaces are important in understanding words and the message they tell, otherwise they are just alphabets strung together like Christmas lights, she would say. Musical notes dance on a music sheet but they express their melody also in the rests. The time that every instrument stops and quietness prevails can be key to the entire piece of music. As important as spaces and rests are in stories and music they are profound even in our lives. Giving ourselves permission to slow down into the spaces of our lives to connect with God and our true selves requires humility and grace. Only the brave and broken are willing to be honest enough to journey beneath the fast paced surface of life to honor their connection to God and themselves. This may sound selfish but to truly love and accept another human being we must be willing to look deep within ourselves to what makes us unique in God s Kingdom so that we can also value the divine uniqueness in others. This is not an easy journey because in this self-discovery we find not only our strengths but our weakness, our mistakes and failures are there also. It is in this brokenness, this struggle to find the truth that we transform, growing more compassionate, finding forgiveness and acceptance with the heart of Christ not only for others but also for ourselves. Realizing that perfectionistic expectations prove to be very harmful to our health, to the joy in our lives and even ripple to the way we connect with others. As Orthodox Christians we are blessed to be part of a sacramental church that lights our path on this journey and gives us the guides to help us. The lifecycle of the caterpillar and butterfly is a metaphor for this journey. The silky caterpillar spins its cocoon (chrysalis) and for months in silence allows its natural transformation to take place, only to struggle for days on end to free itself. It is in this struggle that the wings gain their strength and size so that when freed she is transformed to a most beautiful butterfly. It is in the struggle that we grow and become more Christ-like.Only then we can love with the patient selfless love so beautifully described in Saint Paul s letter to the Corinthians. 7
