Peter and Paul Greek Orthodox Church December 2012 Page 1 ΧΡΙΣΤΟΥΓΕΝΝΑ 2012: «ΔΟΞΑ ΣΟΙ ΤΩ ΔΕΙΞΑΝΤΙ ΤΟ ΦΩΣ, ΔΟΞΑ ΕΝ ΥΨΙΣΤΟΙΣ ΘΕΩ, ΚΑΙ ΕΠΙ ΓΗΣ ΕΙΡΗΝΗ, ΕΝ ΑΝΘΡΩΠΟΙΣ ΕΥΔΟΚΙΑ» Αγαπητοί μου και ευλαβείς Χριστιανοί, Στις 15 Νοεμβρίου άρχισε η περίοδος της σαρακοστής των Χριστουγγένων και ολόκληρη η Εκκλησία προετοιμάζεται και καταβάλει ακόμη μεγαλύτερη προσπάθεια για να προυπαντήσει το Νεογέννητο Χριστό. Η προσπάθεια αυτή για τα Χριστούγεννα εκφράζεται με εντονώτερη προσευχή, ελεημοσύνη, νηστεία, και μετάνοια. Όταν ο άγγελος του Θεού ανακοίνωσε στους βοσκούς την μεγάλη χαρά του ερχομού του Μεσσία, γύρο του ήταν και πλήρης αγγέλων και αρχαγγέλων και έψαλλαν τον δοξολογικό ύμνο της μεγαλοσύνης προς τον Τριαδικό θεό «Δόξα ἐν ὑψίστοις Θεῷ, καὶ ἐπὶ γῆς εἰρήνη, ἐν ἀνθρώποις εὐδοκία.» (Λουκά β 13-14) Στο στίχο αυτό και η ορθόδοξη ψυχή δοξάζει το Θεό στην μικρή και μεγάλη δοξολογία, στις ακολουθίες του όρθρου και του αποδείπνου, και από τον ιερέα πριν αρχίσει την Θεία Λειτουργία. Επίσης ψάλλεται στον όρθρο των χριστουγέννων, «Δόξα ἐν ὑψίστοις Θεῷ καὶ ἐπὶ γῆς εἰρήνη. Σήμερον δέχεται ἡ Βηθλεὲμ τὸν καθήμενον διὰ παντὸς σὺν Πατρί. Σήμερον ἄγγελοι τὸ βρέφος τὸ τεχθὲν θεοπρεπῶς δοξολογοῦσι. Δόξα ἐν ὑψίστοις Θεῷ, καὶ ἐπὶ γῆς εἰρήνη, ἐν ἀνθρώποις εὐδοκία.» Ο Θεός χορηγή την ειρήνη Του και την ευδοκία Του σε ολόκληρη την ανθρωπότητα διαμέσου του μονογενού Του Υιού Ιησού Χριστού. Η ειρήνη που μας προσφέρει ο Χριστός είναι η «άνωθεν ειρήνη» την οποία αναφέρουμε στα ειρηνικά και ακόμη όταν μας λέει ο ιερέας «ειρήνη πάσι» στην Θεία Λειτουργία, στις ιερές ακολουθίες και τα Ιερά Μυστήρια της εκκλησίας. Δεν είναι απλώς ειρήνη στο κόσμο. Ο ίδιος ο Κύριος είπε στους μαθητές Του λίγο πριν τα Άχραντα Πάθη Του, «Εἰρήνην ἀφίημι ὑμῖν, εἰρήνην τὴν ἐμὴν δίδωμι ὑμῖν οὐ καθὼς ὁ κόσμος δίδωσιν, ἐγὼ δίδωμι ὑμῖν.»(ιωάννην ιδ 27) Δυστυχώς υπάρχουν μερικοί που αντιλαμβάνουν την ειρήνη του Χριστόυ μόνο σαν επίγεια ειρήνη και αναρωτιούνται γιατί ακόμη υπάρχει εχθρότητα και πολέμοι στην Μέση Ανατολή, σε κυβερνήσεις και στις οικονομικές καταστάσεις του κόσμου, ακόμη και σε θρησκευτικές οργανώσεις παντού. Ο Κύριος μας υπόσχεται επίγεια ειρήνη μόνο όταν έρθει στην Δευτέρα Παρουσία Του για να κρίνει τον κάθε άνθρωπο. Εώς τότε θα υπάρχει αγώνας εδώ στη γη. Ο σκοπός του πιστού χριστιανού είναι να δέχεται την κάθε δυσκολία με την υπομονή και την ειρήνη του Θεού όπως κατώρθωσαν οι άγιοι σε κάθε εποχή. Οι άγιοι της εκκλησίας μαρτύρησαν στην αγάπη του Ιησού Χριστού. Υποδέχθηκαν κάθε δυσκολία σαν ευλογία και γνώριζαν ότι στον φθαρτό κόσμο υπάρχει φανατισμός, υλισμός, καταναλωτισμός, πλεονεξία, αύτο-ικανοποίηση, αδιαφορία, ενδοτικότητα, ανισότητα, ανηθικότητα και πολιτικοί και θρησκευτικοί διωγμοί. Αγωνίστηκαν με ασκητική ζωή, με μετάνοια και ευχαριστηριακή ζωή με σκοπό να αποκτήσουν το μεγάλο δώρο της ειρήνης του Χριστού και να το επικεντρώνουν σε ολόκληρη την ζωή τους. Με αυτό το τρόπο ανταποκρήθηκαν σε κάθε δυσκολία με προσευχή, ταπεινότητα, πραότητα, τιμιώτητα, αγάπη, γενναιοδωρία, και δικαιωσύνη. Αυτά τα Χριστούγεννα ας προσπαθήσουμε ενσυνείδητα να προετοιμαστούμε σωστά με προσωπική προσευχή και στις Θείες Λειτουργίες, ασκόντας ακόμα με ελεημοσύνη και την νηστεία μας προσερχόμενοι στην Ιερά Εξομολόγηση και την Θεία Κοινωνία για να πλησιάσουμε την μίμηση των αγίων της Εκκλησίας μας οι οποίοι επιλέξανε να ζήσουν την ειρήνη που μας προσφέρει ο Κύριος μας Ιησούς Χριστός, και σαν τους αγγέλους που ψάλλουν, «Δόξα ἐν ὑψίστοις Θεῷ, καὶ ἐπὶ γῆς εἰρήνη, ἐν ἀνθρώποις εὐδοκία.» Εύχομαι εγκαρδίως το Φως της Βηθλεέμ να σας ευλογεί και τις οικογένειες σας με ειρήνη, υγεία, χαρά, σύνεση, αγάπη και κάθε υλική και πνευματική πρόοδο στο νεό ετος Εκ μέρους της οικογένειας μου, τού Διοικητικού Συμβούλιου, της Φιλοπτώχου Αδελφότητας, του Κατηχητικού Σχολείου, των προγραμμάτων της τρίτης ηλικίας, της νεολαίας Goya, Hope & Joy, της Θερινής Κατασκήνωσης και του Ελληνικού Χορού, της Χορωδίας, των Ψαλτών και των Ιεροπαίδων σας ευχόμαστε, ΧΡΙΣΤΟΣ ΓΕΝΝΑΤΑΙ! Peter and Paul Greek Orthodox Church December 2012 Page 2 CHRISTMAS 2012: Beloved brothers and sisters in the Lord, GLORY TO GOD IN THE HIGHEST AND ON EARTH PEACE, GOOD WILL TO ALL PEOPLE With the onset of the Advent season on November 15, 2012, the entire church has begun preparing for the great festal celebration of Christmas with increased acts of prayer, charity, fasting, and repentance in effort to welcome and be with the Newborn Christ. When the angel of the Lord brought the glad tidings of great joy of Christ s birth to the shepherds in the fields, there appeared also a multitude of heavenly host (angels) who praised God, and saying, Glory to God in the Highest, and on earth peace, good will to all people (Gospel of Luke 2:13-14). The beautiful hymns of the Orthodox Church services put this doxology of the angelic choir into the mouths of the faithful time and time again. For example, in the matins of the Feast of the Nativity of Christ we sing, Glory to God in the Highest, and on earth peace! Today Bethlehem receives Him who reigns forever with the Father. Today, angels glorify the newborn babe in hymns worthy of God: Glory to God in the highest! And on earth peace, good will to all people. This verse Glory to God in the Highest, and on earth peace, good will to all people is used as the first line of the great and small doxologies sung daily at matins and at compline, it is prayed prior to the recitation of the morning psalms and by the priest at the beginning of every Eucharistic Divine Liturgy. God gives His peace and His good will to all people through His only begotten Son, our Messiah and Lord Jesus Christ. It is not a worldly peace, but rather, it is a peace from above as we pray in every great litany and, it is a necessary condition in order for us to participate in the Eucharistic Divine Liturgy. Jesus refers to this peace when He spoke to His disciples before His memorable and voluntary Passion, Peace I leave with you; My peace I give to you; not as the world gives do I give to you. (Gospel of John 14:27) Unfortunately, some of us still do not understand fully this gift of Christ and consider it to be in reference only to earthly peace. Some still ask why is there still an ever increasing hostility and war among people; like that of the Middle East and, religions, governments and economies both local and on other continents? In fact Christ did not promise us an end to the fighting of individuals or nations in this world. This type of peace is promised only at the second coming of the Lord where He will come in glory to judge every person and to establish His eternal Kingdom. Until this event takes place, struggle remains a reality on the earth. Yet, like the Saints we are called to bear all things and overcome this earthly struggle. Orthodox Christian saints throughout the ages have continually borne witness to the peace of God in the person of Jesus Christ by receiving His gift and making it the center of their lives. They have made Christ s life their life and have lived the Gospel. They have faced similar issues that we face today such as; secularism, fanaticism, greed, consumerism, immorality, indifference, inequality, and the lack of political and religious freedom. Their response to these issues was the same as Christ s, that is, prayer, humility, modesty, love, patience, honesty, generosity, and righteousness. As we come to the great celebration of the Nativity of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ, let us be reminded of His eternal peace. Let us be reminded that as His followers we are called to become receivers of His peace and in turn, make it the focus of our lives. Let us prepare properly to receive the new born King with: prayers (both private and in the Divine Liturgies), acts of charity (including fasting), and by participating in the Holy Sacraments of Holy Confession (Repentance), and Holy Communion. In this way may we receive the same joy conveyed by the heavenly host and all the saints praising God, and saying, Glory to God in the Highest, and on earth peace, good will to all people On behalf of my family, the Church Council and administrative staff, the Ladies Philoptochos, the Sunday School, The Youth and Youth leaders of the Goya, Hope and Joy, Vacation Church Camp, Greek dance, and Seniors Program, the Choir, the Chanters, and the Altar Servers, CHRIST IS BORN! Peter and Paul Greek Orthodox Church kicked off to a great start this October with over 70 children registered! What a wonderful turnout!!! To register your children or grandchildren, please see one of the Sunday School teachers for a registration form, or Effie at ezimis@hotmail.com. Once again, our Sunday School is supporting the Little Angel missions program of our Metropolis. We are sponsoring a little boy, named Jemmuel, with sponsorship money to provide food, clothing, health packs and education to children and families who are living below the poverty level. Each week, a teddy bear donation container will be displayed in the Church Hall. Please feel free to donate to our Little Angel program and help Jemmuel receive the better life which every child deserves. The children have also sent Jemmuel a card and a gift for his birthday and Christmas. A heartfelt Thank You goes out to everyone in the community for making the Sunday School Bake Sale a great success! Thank you to everyone who brought in a baked-good and to everyone who purchased a baked good. The on-going community support for the Sunday School Program is greatly appreciated. Many thanks go to the dedicated and hardworking Sunday School Staff: Hellen Jarman, Vivian Kourvetaris, Iris Stylianou and Helen Vogiatzis, without whom the program would not be possible! Our plans also include the purchasing of an Adult Baptismal Font, wood-carved chairs for the Holy Altar, and a donation towards the iconography for our Church.
