1 Mark Καὶ λέγει αὐτοῖς ἐν ἐκείνῃ τῇ ἡμέρᾳ ὀψίας γενομένης διέλθωμεν εἰς τὸ πέραν. On that day, when evening came, He said to them, "Let us go over to the other side." And the same day, when the even was come, he saith unto them, Let us pass over unto the other side. And he saith to them that day, when evening was come: Let us pass over to the other side. On that day, when evening had come, he said to them, "Let us go across to the other side." On that day, when evening came, Jesus said to his disciples, "Let's go across to the other side of the lake." That day when evening came, he said to his disciples, "Let us go over to the other side." As evening came, Jesus said to his disciples, "Let's cross to the other side of the lake." Late that day he said to them, "Let's go across to the other side." Note the tense of λέγει. This is an example of: Who is the "them" to whom Jesus is speaking? What kind of construction is ὀψίας γενομένης? (Hint: What is mood and case of γενομένης?) διέλθωμεν is mood functioning here as: (Hint: Besides noting mood, also note Person and Number.) Where are they when Jesus says this? Where is the "other side" to which they end up going?

2 36 καὶ ἀφέντες τὸν ὄχλον παραλαμβάνουσιν αὐτὸν ὡς ἦν ἐν τῷ πλοίῳ, καὶ ἄλλα πλοῖα ἦν μετ αὐτοῦ. Leaving the crowd, they took Him along with them in the boat, just as He was; and other boats were with Him. And when they had sent away the multitude, they took him even as he was in the ship. And there were also with him other little ships. And sending away the multitude, they take him even as he was in the ship: and there were other ships with him. And leaving the crowd behind, they took him with them in the boat, just as he was. Other boats were with him. So after leaving the crowd, they took him along, just as he was, in the boat, and other boats were with him. Leaving the crowd behind, they took him along, just as he was, in the boat. There were also other boats with him. So they took Jesus in the boat and started out, leaving the crowds behind (although other boats followed). They took him in the boat as he was. Other boats came along. This is a notoriously difficult verse to understand. To get a start, compare the (very literal translation of the NA27 text), the (a rather literal translation of the Textus Receptus), and the (which is doing its very best as a dynamic translation to make sense of things). ἀφέντες: In this context, does this verb mean "to leave" or "to send away, let go, dismiss"? Who is doing the "leaving/dismissing"? (Hint: With what does the participle agree?) Now explain the difference in the opening phrase between the and? Again, note tense of παραλαμβάνουσιν. ἐν τῷ πλοίῳ: Is this prepositional phrase indicating how he was or how they take him along? Cf. the Bible note. καὶ ἄλλα πλοῖα ἦν μετ αὐτοῦ: What is Mark trying to indicate here? Cf. what the does with this. Also see whether Matthew or Luke 'fix' this confusing point. Why does the say that they were "little ships"?

3 37 καὶ γίνεται λαῖλαψ μεγάλη ἀνέμου καὶ τὰ κύματα ἐπέβαλλεν εἰς τὸ πλοῖον, ὥστε ἤδη γεμίζεσθαι τὸ πλοῖον. And there arose a fierce gale of wind, and the waves were breaking over the boat so much that the boat was already filling up. And there arose a great storm of wind, and the waves beat into the ship, so that it was now full. And there arose a great storm of wind, and the waves beat into the ship, so that the ship was filled. A great windstorm arose, and the waves beat into the boat, so that the boat was already being swamped. Now a great windstorm developed and the waves were breaking into the boat, so that the boat was nearly swamped. A furious squall came up, and the waves broke over the boat, so that it was nearly swamped. But soon a fierce storm came up. High waves were breaking into the boat, and it began to fill with water. A huge storm came up. Waves poured into the boat, threatening to sink it. Again, note tense of γίνεται. What exactly is a λαῖλαψ μεγάλη ἀνέμου? 38 καὶ αὐτὸς ἦν ἐν τῇ πρύμνῃ ἐπὶ τὸ προσκεφάλαιον καθεύδων. καὶ ἐγείρουσιν αὐτὸν καὶ λέγουσιν αὐτῷ διδάσκαλε, οὐ μέλει σοι ὅτι ἀπολλύμεθα; Jesus Himself was in the stern, asleep on the cushion; and they woke Him and said to Him, "Teacher, do You not care that we are perishing?" And he was in the hinder part of the ship, asleep on a pillow: and they awake him, and say unto him, Master, carest thou not that we perish? And he was in the hinder part of the ship, sleeping upon a pillow; and they awake him, and say to him: Master, doth it not concern thee that we perish? But he was in the stern, asleep on the cushion; and they woke him up and said to him, "Teacher, do you not care that we are perishing?" But he was in the stern, sleeping on a cushion. They woke him up and said to him, "Teacher, don't you care that we are about to die?" Jesus was in the stern, sleeping on a cushion. The disciples woke him and said to him, "Teacher, don't you care if we drown?" Jesus was sleeping at the back of the boat with his head on a cushion. The disciples woke him up, shouting, "Teacher, don't you care that we're going to drown?" And Jesus was in the stern, head on a pillow, sleeping! They roused him, saying, "Teacher, is it nothing to you that we're going down?" Bonus work: The word here for "pillow, cushion" is προσκεφάλαιον. Note that the Greek word indicates that it something for one's "head / κεφαλη." Matthew's story of this account starts in 8.23, but read what Jesus says just a few verses earlier in 8.20! (Now check and see if Matthew mentions this "head cushion" in his account.) Again, note tense of ἐγείρουσιν and λέγουσιν. Where else in Mark is Jesus called a διδασκαλος? What are the implications in Mark when Jesus is recognized as a "teacher"?

4 39 καὶ διεγερθεὶς ἐπετίμησεν τῷ ἀνέμῳ καὶ εἶπεν τῇ θαλάσσῃ σιώπα, πεφίμωσο. καὶ ἐκόπασεν ὁ ἄνεμος καὶ ἐγένετο γαλήνη μεγάλη. And He got up and rebuked the wind and said to the sea, "Hush, be still." And the wind died down and it became perfectly calm. And he arose, and rebuked the wind, and said unto the sea, Peace, be still. And the wind ceased, and there was a great calm. And rising up, he rebuked the wind, and said to the sea: Peace, be still. And the wind ceased: and there was made a great calm. He woke up and rebuked the wind, and said to the sea, "Peace! Be still!" Then the wind ceased, and there was a dead calm. So he got up and rebuked the wind, and said to the sea, "Be quiet! Calm down!" Then the wind stopped, and it was dead calm. He got up, rebuked the wind and said to the waves, "Quiet! Be still!" Then the wind died down and it was completely calm. When Jesus woke up, he rebuked the wind and said to the waves, "Silence! Be still!" Suddenly the wind stopped, and there was a great calm. Awake now, he told the wind to pipe down and said to the sea, "Quiet! Settle down!" The wind ran out of breath; the sea became smooth as glass. Where and how else is επιτιμαω used in Mark? What two Greek verbs are used to describe what Jesus said to the sea? Where else are these terms used in Mark? You should note that this is the second μεγάλη (μεγας) thing in the story. You should be watching for more καὶ εἶπεν αὐτοῖς τί δειλοί ἐστε; οὔπω ἔχετε πίστιν; And He said to them, "Why are you afraid? Do you still have no faith?" And he said unto them, Why are ye so fearful? how is it that ye have no faith? And he said to them: Why are you fearful? have you not faith yet? And they feared exceedingly: and they said one to another: Who is this (thinkest thou) that both wind and sea obey him? He said to them, "Why are you afraid? Have you still no faith?" And he said to them, "Why are you cowardly? Do you still not have faith?" He said to his disciples, "Why are you so afraid? Do you still have no faith?" Then he asked them, "Why are you afraid? Do you still have no faith?" Jesus reprimanded the disciples: "Why are you such cowards? Don't you have any faith at all?" What is the best way to translate δειλοί? Notice the interesting text variants here. Which one does the reflect? Which one does the reflect? Translate each. and others read: τι δειλοι εστε ουτως; πως ουκ εχετε πιστιν; W reads: τι δειλοι εστε ουτως εχετε πιστιν; 45 and a few mss read: τι ουτως δειλοι εστε; ουπω εχετε πιστιν; א B D L... et al read: τι δειλοι εστε; ουπω εχετε πιστιν; Note that Jesus' first statement is a question using τί. His second statement could be either a question or a declarative.

5 41 καὶ ἐφοβήθησαν φόβον μέγαν καὶ ἔλεγον πρὸς ἀλλήλους τίς ἄρα οὗτός ἐστιν ὅτι καὶ ὁ ἄνεμος καὶ ἡ θάλασσα ὑπακούει αὐτῷ; They became very much afraid and said to one another, "Who then is this, that even the wind and the sea obey Him?" And they feared exceedingly, and said one to another, What manner of man is this, that even the wind and the sea obey him? And he said to them: Why are you fearful? have you not faith yet? And they feared exceedingly: and they said one to another: Who is this (thinkest thou) that both wind and sea obey him? And they were filled with great awe and said to one another, "Who then is this, that even the wind and the sea obey him?" They were overwhelmed by fear and said to one another, "Who then is this? Even the wind and sea obey him!" They were terrified and asked each other, "Who is this? Even the wind and the waves obey him!" The disciples were absolutely terrified. "Who is this man?" they asked each other. "Even the wind and waves obey him!" They were in absolute awe, staggered. "Who is this, anyway?" they asked. "Wind and sea at his beck and call!" ἐφοβήθησαν φόβον μέγαν: Just how afraid were the disciples? Did you note the μέγαν? Note the tense of ἔλεγον. How might you express this in your translation? There does seem to be a bit of a word play between this and the previous verse. τί δειλοί ἐστε >< τίς ἄρα οὗτός ἐστιν Who else obeys = υπακουω Jesus in Mark?
