2 Οι Ιστορικές Ενδείξεις της Ανάστασης του Ιησού Χριστού Η Ανάσταση του Ιησού Χριστού, το θεµέλιο του Χριστιανισµού, είναι ένα γεγονός µε απολύτως συνεπές ιστορικό υπόβαθρο, πράγµα που φανερώνει ότι η Ανάσταση του Χριστού είναι ένα γεγονός που αδιαµφισβήτητα έλαβε χώρα µέσα στην ανθρώπινη ιστορία. Από τα τέσσερα Ευαγγέλια που αποδεδειγµένα είναι αξιόπιστες ιστορικές πηγές (βλ. παλαιότερα άρθρα) γνωρίζουµε τα περισσότερα στοιχεία για τα γεγονότα που αφορούν το θάνατο και ταφή του Χριστού από όσα γνωρίζουµε για το θάνατο και την ταφή οποιουδήποτε άλλου προσώπου στην αρχαία Ιστορία. Ο τάφος δεν αµφισβητήθηκε ποτέ ότι είναι άδειος. 1. Ο Ιησούς ήταν πράγµατι νεκρός Μαστιγώθηκε άγρια, δάρθηκε και φόρεσε αγκάθινο στεφάνι. «Τον έφεραν» στο Γολγοθά διότι ήταν πολύ εξαντληµένος και δεν µπορούσε ο ίδιος να κουβαλήσει το σταυρό. Η σταύρωση ήταν ένα µεγάλο µαρτύριο. Με όλες του τις πληγές και τις φλεγµονές κρεµόταν ηµίγυµνος από τα καρφιά και παρά την εξάντλησή του ήταν υποχρεωµένος να κινεί τα πόδια του για να αναπνέει. Ο θάνατος δεν αργεί να έρθει σε τέτοιες καταστάσεις και µάλιστα ήταν απολύτρωση. Το αίµα και το νερό που βγήκαν από το τρύπηµα της λόγχης, πιστοποιούν ιατρικώςότι έχει προηγηθεί θάνατος (ο θάνατος δεν προκλήθηκε από το τρύπηµα της λόγχης). Ακόµα κι αν δεν ήταν νεκρός, η λόγχη διαπερνώντας τους πνεύµονες και πιθανότατα και το περικάρδιο, θα τον θανάτωνε αµέσως. 2. Ο τάφος Γνωρίζουµε επακριβώς ποιος ανέλαβε την ταφή του σώµατος του Ιησού. Γνωρίζουµε τον ιδιοκτήτη του τάφου. Γνωρίζουµε την τοποθεσία του τάφου. Περιγράφονται λεπτοµερώς οι προετοιµασίες της ταφής. 3. Η ταφή: το σώµα του Χριστού τοποθετείται στον τάφο και ασφαλίζεται Τα σάβανα τύλιγαν το σώµα πολύ σφιχτά (χρησιµοποιείται η λέξη «έδεσαν») και ήταν κολληµένα πάνω στο σώµα λόγω των αρωµατικών ουσιών, σχηµατίζοντας ένα συµπαγές σώµα. Ήταν αδύνατον όχι µόνο να βγει ο ίδιος από τα σάβανα αλλά και κάποιος άλλος να ξετυλίξει το σώµα. Επίσης, ακόµα κι αν δεν ήταν νεκρός, η οξεία οσµή του µύρου θα τον έπνιγε. Η είσοδος του τάφου καλυπτόταν από µία µεγάλη πέτρα που χρειάζονταν αρκετοί άνδρες να την κυλήσουν. Η είσοδος του τάφου σφραγίστηκεµε τη ρωµαϊκή σφραγίδα. Η ρωµαϊκή φρουρά σφραγίζοντας τον τάφο πιστοποίησε ότι έλαβαν ένα συγκεκριµένο νεκρό σώµα. Η δε σφραγίδα προστατευόταν πάση θυσία από τους άψογα εκπαιδευµένους και σκληρά πειθαρχηµένους ρωµαίους στρατιώτες καθώς αφενός αντιπροσώπευε την εξουσία της ρωµαϊκής αυτοκρατορίας, αφετέρου δε η παραβίασή της από τρίτους, επέσυρε τιµωρία θανάτου στους φρουρούς. Με λίγα λόγια, ο τάφος ήταν αδύνατον να παραβιαστεί. 4. Ο τάφος αδειάζει! Το γεγονός αυτό δεν αµφισβητήθηκε ποτέ, ούτε ακόµη κι από τους εχθρούς του Χριστού. Ήταν δεδοµένο και εύκολα επαληθεύσιµο για τους σύγχρονους ανθρώπους της εποχής εκείνης. Έγιναν κάποιες προσπάθειες να δοθεί µια διαφορετική εξήγηση για το τι συνέβη. Και όλες αυτές οι προσπάθειες δεν έκαναν τίποτα περισσότερο από το να επιβεβαιώνουν αφενός ότι ο τάφος ήταν όντως άδειος και αφετέρου ότι οι ενδείξεις ότι ο τάφος ήταν άδειος ήταν πολύ τρανταχτές για να τολµήσει κανείς να ισχυριστεί το αντίθετο. Το γεγονός ότι τα σφιχτοτυλιγµένα και κολληµένα, µε αρωµατικές κολλώδεις ουσίες, σάβανα ήταν κενά αλλά και ότι το σουδάριο που κάλυπτε το κεφάλι του Χριστού ήταν τυλιγµένο ξεχωριστά λίγο πιο πέρα, δείχνουν ότι το σώµα είχε βγει από τα σάβανα µόνο του και µε ηρεµία. *Συνέχεια στην επόµενη σελίδα Page 3

3 *Συνέχεια 5. Προσπάθειες εξήγησης του άδειου τάφου α. Απώλεια των αισθήσεων: Ο Χριστός δεν πέθανε πάνω στο σταυρό αλλά έχασε τις αισθήσεις του. Ενταφιάστηκε ζωντανός και µετά από πολλές ώρες συνήρθε. Απάντηση: Είδαµε παραπάνω ότι ο Ιησούς ήταν αναµφισβήτητα νεκρός. Αλλά και να µην ήταν, µετά από την ταλαιπωρία που πέρασε και τις πληγές που είχε, χωρίς ιατρική βοήθεια και δεµένος µε τα σάβανα και τα έντονα τοξικά µυρωδικά, µάλλον θα κατέληγε παρά θα συνερχόταν. Αλλά και να συνερχόταν, θα ήταν αδύνατον ένας εξασθενηµένος και γεµάτος πληγές άνθρωπος, µόνος του να λυθεί από τα σάβανα, να κυλήσει την τεράστια πέτρα, να κατανικήσει τη ρωµαϊκή φρουρά, να περπατήσει αρκετά χιλιόµετρα και να παρουσιαστεί στους µαθητές. β. Το σώµα του Ιησού εκλάπη: Κάποιοι κατά τη διάρκεια της νύχτας έκλεψαν το σώµα από τον τάφο. Απάντηση: Οι εχθροί του Ιησού δεν είχαν κανένα κίνητρο και οι φοβισµένοι µαθητές του δεν είχαν καµία δύναµη να κάνουν κάτι τέτοιο. Όποιος επιχειρούσε να κλέψει το σώµα θα έπρεπε είτε να νικήσει πρώτα τη ρωµαϊκή φρουρά είτε να ελπίζει ότι όλοι οι φρουροί θα αποκοιµηθούν (πράγµα αδύνατον) και στη συνέχεια απολύτως αθόρυβα να αποκυλήσει την πέτρα και µε βιασύνη να κλέψει το σώµα και όχι να φροντίσει να βγάλει και µάλιστα να τυλίξει τα κολληµένα σάβανα. Το σενάριο της κλοπής τους σώµατος οδήγησε µάλιστα τους ρωµαίους στρατιώτες στην αντίφαση να διαδώσουν ότι οι ίδιοι αποκοιµήθηκαν (ενώ ήξεραν ότι αυτό τιµωρείται µε θάνατο) αλλά παρόλα αυτά, να γνωρίζουν ότι αυτοί που έκλεψαν το σώµα ήταν, υποτίθεται, οι µαθητές. γ. Παραισθήσεις: Το γεγονός ότι οι µαθητές είδαν τον Χριστό αναστηµένο ήταν µια οµαδική παραίσθηση. Απάντηση: Παραισθήσεις έχουν συγκεκριµένα είδη ανθρώπων και όταν βρίσκονται σε ιδιαίτερη ψυχολογική κατάσταση. Επίσης οι παραισθήσεις είναι πολύ ατοµικές και εξαιρετικά υποκειµενικές. Η Καινή ιαθήκη αναφέρει ότι ήρθαν σε επαφή µε τον Αναστηµένο Χριστό πεντακόσιοι και πλέον άνθρωποι διαφορετικής ψυχοσύνθεσης και σε διαφορετικές ψυχολογικές καταστάσεις, συνθήκες που δεν ευνοούν τη δηµιουργία παραισθήσεων, και όλων οι µαρτυρίες συµφωνούν µεταξύ τους. Επίσης πρόσφορο έδαφος για παραισθήσεις δεν υπήρχε διότι κανείς δεν προσδοκούσε να δει τον Κύριο αναστηµένο. O Ίδιος άλλωστε δυσκολεύτηκε να τους πείσει για την Ανάστασή Του. Εφόσον λοιπόν, ενώ ο τάφος αδειάζει, κανένα από τα παραπάνω σενάρια δεν ισχύει, οδηγούµαστε λογικά στο συµπέρασµα ότι έγινε Ανάσταση. Ο µεν τρόπος που έγινε είναι θαυµατουργικός αλλά το γεγονός είναι ιστορικό! Ο Αναστηµένος Χριστός φανέρωνε τον Εαυτό Του «δια πολλών τεκµηρίων» για σαράντα ηµέρες και σε πεντακοσίους και πλέον ανθρώπους. Φανερώθηκε σε συγκεκριµένα άτοµα, σε συγκεκριµένες τοποθεσίες και σε συγκεκριµένες χρονικές στιγµές που αναφέρονται λεπτοµερώς µέσα στα κείµενα της Καινής ιαθήκης (Μάρκον 16:9-14 & Α Κορινθίους 15:6-8). Επίσης, η Ανάσταση ήταν σωµατική. Οι µαθητές, οµολογούν ειλικρινέστατα και αντικειµενικά ότι και οι ίδιοι δυσκολεύτηκαν να πειστούν ότι έβλεπαν µπροστά τους τον αναστηµένο Χριστό όχι σαν πνεύµα αλλά µε σώµα. Και εφόσον βεβαιώθηκαν για αυτό, δεν χωρούσε καµία αµφισβήτηση µέσα τους ότι ο διδάσκαλός τους πράγµατι αναστήθηκε. Η Ανάσταση του Ιησού Χριστού, ως πραγµατικό γεγονός, είχε και έχει αποτελέσµατα. Αν ο Χριστός δεν ανασταινόταν, οι µαθητές θα ένιωθαν απογοητευµένοι και προδοµένοι από έναν άνθρωπο που τους έπεισε να εγκαταλείψουν τα πάντα και να τον ακολουθήσουν στηριζόµενοι σε µία ψεύτικη ελπίδα. Όµως βλέπουµε τους µαθητές να µεταµορφώνονται σε άφοβους κήρυκες της Ανάστασης και είναι τόσο βεβαιωµένοι για αυτό ώστε δέχονται ακόµα και να πεθάνουν για αυτή την πίστη τους. Aλλά και όλοι οι ανά τους αιώνες κατ επίγνωση Χριστιανοί που οµολογούν την προσωπική τους εµπειρία µε τον Ιησού Χριστό, γίνονται αληθινοί µάρτυρες της Αναστάσεώς Του. 4 Αγαπητοί µου αδερφοί εν Χριστώ, THE AGIASMA MARCH APRIL 2012 VOL. 4, ISSUE 3 Το Πνευµατικό µήνυµα Από τον Πατέρα Σαράντη Πλησιάζουµε τις τελευταίες ηµέρες της Μεγάλης Σαρακοστής και σύντοµα θα εισέλθουµε στη Μεγάλη Εβδοµάδα Τα Πάθη του Κυρίου µας και τη Μεγάλη Παρασκευή θα προσευχόµαστε την τελετή της Αποκαθήλωσης. Πρόκειται για την τελετή στην οποία ξαναζωντανεύουµε τις τελευταίες στιγµές του Κυρίου. Τους τελευταίους αβάσταχτους πόνους της Σταύρωσής Του όπου υπέστη ως εγκληµατίας των αµαρτιών µας. Η ώρα έχει φθάσει όπου ο Υιός θα αναθέσει το Πνεύµα Του στον πατέρα Θεό Είναι η στιγµή όπου η γη έχει κλονιστεί, ο ναός έχει διασπαστεί και το σκοτάδι έχει καλύψει τη γη. Ήταν τότε που οι Ρωµαίοι στρατιώτες κορόιδευαν και κακοποιούσαν τον Ιησού στο στρατηγείο του Καϊάφα Στρατιώτες που έπτυαν τον Ιησού, Τον έγδυσαν και Τον στεφάνωσαν µε αγκάθια Στρατιώτες που στη συνέχεια Τον οδήγησαν στον Γολγοθά, σφυροκόπησαν καρφιά στα χέρια και στα πόδια Του και Τον σταύρωσαν. Στρατιώτες που πολύ πιθανό είχαν διαπράξει κάτι τέτοιο αµέτρητες φορές στο παρελθόν και ήταν σκληραγωγηµένοι και αδιάφοροι στα βασανιστήρια και στα µαρτύρια των ανθρώπων. Αλλά σε αντίθεση µε άλλες φορές αυτή τη φορά ήταν διαφορετικά για αυτούς. Εξαιτίας του τι συνέβη που τους άλλαξε ριζικά. Ο Ιησούς δεν ήταν απλά άλλος ένας εγκληµατίας πλέον. Πραγµατικά αυτός ήταν ο Υιός του Θεού! Όταν ο εκατόνταρχος και όσοι ήταν µαζί του φύλασσαν τον Ιησού είδαν το σεισµό και ότι άλλο συνέβη εκεί, γέµισαν δέος και είπαν: Πραγµατικά αυτός ήταν ο Υιός του Θεού! Ματθ. 27:54 Τι ήταν αυτό που συνέβη και τους έκανε να αλλάξουν τόσο; Τα σηµάδια βέβαια! Το σκοτάδι, ο σεισµός και η διάσπαση των βράχων που µας έκαναν όλους να µείνουµε άναυδοι. Όµως, πιθανά να υπήρχε και κάτι περισσότερο. Ήταν τα λόγια του Ιησού πάνω στο Σταυρό. Λόγια τα οποία δεν ήταν λόγια ενός εγκληµατία. Λόγια που δεν ήταν από θυµό, πικρία ή γεµάτα µίσος, όπως αυτά που συνήθιζαν να ακούν. Άκουσαν το Χριστό να λέγει λόγια όπως: Πατέρα, συγχώρεσέ τους..σήµερα θα είµαστε µαζί στον Παράδεισο...Πατέρα µέσα στα χέρια Σου παραδίδω το Πνεύµα Μου. Αυτά είναι λόγια συµπόνιας, λόγια αγάπης, λόγια εµπιστοσύνης και ειρήνης. Οπότε πιθανώς το σκοτάδι που κάλυψε τη γη και σταµάτησε όταν ο Ιησούς παρέδωσε το Πνεύµα Του, να σήµαινε το σκοτάδι της καρδιάς των στρατιωτών που στιγµατίστηκε από το Φως του Κυρίου. Πιθανότατα ο κλονισµός της γης να ήταν σηµάδι του κλονισµού των ψυχών στα λόγια του Ιησού. Εποµένως, πόσο ευλογηµένοι είναι αυτοί οι στρατιώτες που σταύρωσαν το Χριστό! Που βρέθηκαν εκεί για να οµολογήσουν Πραγµατικά αυτός ήταν ο Υιός του Θεού. Ό,τι είχε ξεκινήσει σαν µια απλή µέρα µε άλλη µια σταύρωση, κατέληξε να είναι κάτι πολύ περισσότερο. Και µε τον ίδιο τρόπο, πόσο ευλογηµένοι είναι µερικοί από µας (ελπίζοντας για όλους µας) που εξοµολογούνται ότι σταύρωσαν τον Υιό του Θεού µε τις αµαρτίες τους, Τον χλεύασαν µε την ανίερη ζωή τους και Τον ετίµησαν στο Σταυρό µε µισή καρδιά. Για τις σκληρές και πέτρινες καρδιές µας που σπάνε στο Λόγο του Θεού και που ακόµα έχουµε καθοδηγηθεί από το Πνεύµα του Χριστού να µετανοήσουµε και να οµολογήσουµε Πραγµατικά αυτός ήταν ο Υιός του Θεού. Οι στρατιώτες, είµαι βέβαιος, είχαν πολλά περισσότερα να µάθουν για την πίστη. Αλλά το σηµαντικότερο ήταν η οµολογία τους στο Σταυρό. Αναρωτιέµαι αν ήταν οι ίδιοι στρατιώτες που φύλασσαν το Χριστό στον Τάφο; Πόσο σωστό να είναι αν αυτοί που µαρτύρησαν τα σηµάδια του θανάτου Του να ήταν οι ίδιοι που µαρτύρησαν τα σηµάδια της Ανάστασής Του; Αγαπητοί µου αδερφοί εν Χριστώ, Είναι πολύ σπουδαίο το µάθηµα από τους στρατιώτες της εξοµολόγησης. Το µυστήριο της εξοµολόγησης είναι το ξεχασµένο φάρµακο των ηµερών µας για να νιώσουµε τη συµπόνια του Θεού για εµάς τους αµαρτωλούς. Ας προσευχηθούµε όλοι µας να έρθουµε σε εξοµολόγηση αυτές τις ξεχωριστές ηµέρες, να νιώσουµε πραγµατικά την Ιερή Ανάστασή Του στις καρδιές µας, αστράφτοντάς τες και µαλακώνοντάς τες µε το Ιερό Φως Του της αγάπης και της συγχώρεσης µέσα από το άφθονο Έλεός Του. Εκ µέρους της Πρεσβυτέρας Νόρµας και ολόκληρης της οικογένειάς µου, σας εύχοµαι µια Κατανυκτική Μεγάλη Εβδοµάδα και Καλή Ανάσταση. Αµήν! Page 5

Sarantis A Spiritual Message My beloved, We approaching the final days of the Great Lent, Sarakosti, and soon we will be entering Holy Week; the Passion of our Lord Jesus, and on Good Friday, we will be in worship at the Apokathilosis service. It is the service, in which we re-live the Lord s final moments; the final unbearable pains of His crucifixion like a criminal for our sins. The hour has come when He will entrust God the Father with His spirit; it is the moment when the earth had shaken, the temple split, and darkness covered the earth. Then were Roman soldiers who mocked and abused Jesus in the Caiffa s headquarters; soldiers who spit on Jesus, stripped Him, and crowned Him with thorns; soldiers who then led Him out to Golgotha, pounded the nails through His hands and feet, and then lifted Him up on the cross. Soldiers who had probably done this numerous times before. Who had grown hardened and numb to the suffering and torture of others. But unlike other times this time was different for them. Because of what took place, this one changed them. Christ was no longer just another criminal. Truly this was the Son of God! When the centurion and those who were with him, keeping watch over Jesus, saw the earthquake and what took place, they were filled with awe and said, Truly this was the Son of God! Matt. 27:54. What had taken place to change them so? The signs, certainly! The darkness, earthquake, and splitting of rocks would cause all of us to pause. But perhaps there was more to it. There were also the words that Jesus spoke from the cross. Words, which were not the words of a criminal. Words, that was not angry, bitter, or filled with hate - like they were used to hearing. They heard Jesus say things like: Father, forgive them.... Today, you will be with me in Paradise.... Father, into Your hands I commit my Spirit. These were words of compassion, words of love, words of trust and peace. So perhaps the darkness that covered the earth, but ended when Jesus died, was a sign of the darkness of the soldier s hearts that was then spotted by the light of Christ. Perhaps the shaking of the earth was a sign of the shaking of their souls at the words of Christ. So how blessed those soldiers who nailed the Son of God to the cross! Who were brought to confess, Truly, this was the Son of God! What had started out as just another day and just another crucifixion, turned out to be so much more than that. And in the same way, how blessed are some of us (hoping for all of us) who confessed that have nailed the Son of God to the cross with our sins, who mock Him with unholy lives, and who crown Him with half-hearted praise. For our hard and stony hearts have also been smashed by the Word of God, and we also have been led by the Spirit of Christ to repent and confess, Truly, this is the Son of God! The soldiers, I m sure, had much more to learn in faith. But it must be significant that they make their confession at the cross. I wonder if they were the same soldiers sent to guard to tomb of Jesus? How appropriate it would be if they, who witnessed the signs of Jesus death, would also be the ones to witness the signs of His Resurrection. My beloved, There is a great lesson to be learned from the soldiers confessions. The sacrament of confession is the forgotten medicine for our times to feel God s compassion for us sinners. Let us pray for all of us to come to confession these special times of ours and truly feel His Holy Resurrecting in hearts, sparkled and soften by His Holy light of love and forgiveness through His abundance mercy. Όπως και ο γεωργός χαίρεται µε τον ερχοµό της άνοιξης έτσι κι µεις, οι πιστοί της Αγ. Μαρκέλλας που ανυποµονούµε για την καινούργια αρχή της Εκκλησίας µας. Το όνειρό µας σύντοµα θα εκπληρωθεί. Πρόσφατα την Κυριακή της Τυροφάγου µου δόθηκε η ευκαιρία να αναφερθώ στην αξιοσηµείωτη πρόοδο κτισίµατος του κτηρίου της νέας Εκκλησίας ΜΑΣ. Ταυτοχρόνως, σας µεταφέρω το µήνυµα ότι παρόλο που βρισκόµαστε στο τελικό στάδιο κατασκευής υπάρχει ανάγκη οικονοµικής βοήθειας για την ολοκλήρωση του έργου φέτος. Just as the farmer is glad that spring has come so we, the faithful, of St. Markella who look forward to our new beginning in our new church. Our dream will soon become reality. Recently, on Sunday of Cheese-fare, I had the opportunity to address many of you in the church about the joyful progress of the construction for OUR new church. At the same time, I convey the message that although we were at the final stages of the construction I express the financial need to complete the church this year. Along with Fr. Sarantis and our Treasurer, Mr. Manolis Sazaklis, comments to the congregation I offered on Parish Council s behalf the solution to the financial need. That is for all of us to follow the Parish s Council role model idea and offering, loaning the church from the gifts that the Lord gave us so we may finish the church, as it is explained in the Special Letter sent to all of you in last month. The Parish Council initiated and gave in excess of over $155,000. Today after the announcement many of you took the liberty to offer your part according to your strength. I invite you all for the best interest to our children, our faith, and our culture to comeforth and offer your part. As the Parish Council s wish and as a curtsey to you the Fund-raising Committee will attempt to call and possibly visit your home. I believe that you will do your heart s desire. It is also my feverish wish to invite all of you to our Easter Village Style Dance and Picnic on Easter day at the ground s of church. I hope to see you there. Now I can get back to normal. This sentiment is perhaps one of the most widely felt emotions, generally in the fall, in most Greek Orthodox parishes in America. It follows the two Main Events we frequently dread in our church lives, namely our Stewardship Sunday and Greek Festival. Somehow, Page 13 Page 8 people we never see during the year magically get their GPS navigation systems to again find their church solely during the day they will attend (and maybe work) the Greek Festival. And then, as if Harry Houdini and David Copperfield attended our parishes, these part-timers become like groundhogs that show us their shadows as they disappear until next year. On the other hand, Stewardship Sunday strikes fear in the hearts and minds of many parishioners even more than having to go to confession. Someone might actually ask us to account for what we have done with the gifts God gave us. But thankfully for most, the traveling magic show comes into the pews on only one Sunday, with much fanfare, new slick banners, brochures and slogans, and then disappears just as quickly. Imagine if God only showed up and gave us His gifts one Sunday, or weekend, a year and then He disappeared and left us completely on our own with no food, nothing to drink, no sunshine, etc. Our Lord gives us unconditional love and gifts every second of every day of our lives. Without His gifts we could not exist. The breath of oxygen you just inhaled and the lungs you used to process it to stay alive were both gifts from your Father. And yet we somehow think our stewardship can be relegated to one Stewardship Sunday or weekend of gyro making and baklava slinging. My simple definition is: Stewardship is what you do with the gifts God gave you. Nothing more complicated than that. Everything we have is a gift from our Father. And these gifts are ours for only the limited time we are here on this earth. And yet we sometimes forget that what we do with those gifts is one of the measures of whether or not our souls are prepared for salvation and the hoped-for eternal life of theosis and oneness with our Lord and Savior. Stewardship is a way of life. It is what we do every second, minute, hour and day of our life. It isn t just about writing a check once a year. It is about demonstrating every day that we understand what our responsibility is with respect to ALL of the gifts we have received. We teach our children to say thank you when they receive gifts, but do we do the same to our Father who blesses us every moment of our lives? Thankfully, it s not too late to walk the talk. The book Oriented Leadership says Stewardship is what a person does, after saying, I believe as proof of that belief. We all like to talk and tell folks what we believe. But what have we done lately with the gifts God gave us? Not just your talents, but including your talents. Not just your time, but including your time. Not just your money, but including your money. What have you done with the amazing thing that you do so spectacularly? Who in your parish have you taught that thing that only you can do so well? When was the last time you brought your wit, wisdom, philosophy, coaching, fix-it skills or just loving care to one of your Parishioners (or a total stranger) who was afraid, confused, lost, sick, suffering, hungry, thirsty, in prison, or just in need? There is only one thing keeping you from being the incredible steward you are capable of becoming. And that one thing is You. I know you are busy. So is everyone else. But every day of your life, among the trillions of gifts God gives you each nanosecond, are two very big ones. The first, is the gift of 24 hours. And the second, is the gift of free will to decide what you will do with the first gift. It is up to you. As we all told our children at one time or the other: You are the boss of you. What have you done today with the gifts God gave you? In which ministries of your parish, Metropolis, Archdiocese or Patriarchate have you assisted this week or month or year? This is what you are called to do every day, not just the weekend of the Festival or Stewardship Sunday. You can t change how you got to where you are, but you can change where you re going. You don t know when you will meet your Maker and be asked to account for your life. Perhaps you may not want to wait and hope you ll get a Hail Mary shot like the thief next to our Lord on the day of His crucifixion. Ask to be remembered in His kingdom every day, and in every way you act, and with what you do with the gifts God gave you. Don t wait for the Main Event(s). It might just be too late. 13 PARENTS AND CHILDREN His sons used to take turns holding feasts in their homes, and they would invite their three sisters to eat and drink with them. When a period of feasting had run its course, Job would send and have them purified. Early in the morning he would sacrifice a burnt offering for each of them, thinking, Perhaps my children have sinned and cursed God in their hearts. This was Job s regular custom. Job 1:4-5 Like parents in all generations, Job was concerned about his children. He might have been the most outstanding citizen of his time, but nothing was as important to him as his children. As they became adults, Job remained concerned, particularly about their habit of gathering together to eat and drink and feast for days. Day after day, he rose early and prayed for them. The relationship between parents and children is a constant theme throughout the Bible. As children age, they seek to become independent. Yet, as Job discovered, parents have an emotional attachment to their children throughout their lives. The Bible provides many instructions to guide parents. But children also are encouraged to understand why parents remain important in their lives even after they become adults. Proverbs tells us there are penalties for those who curse their father, but a man who loves wisdom makes his father glad (Proverbs 29:3). Children are to listen to their parents (Proverbs 4:1-3). They are to remember the impact they have on their parents (Proverbs 10:1). There are specific rewards for those with good attitudes toward their parents: Honor your father and your mother, that your days may be prolonged in the land which the LORD your God gives you (Exodus 20:12). Are you a parent? Pray for your children. Seek to be a good example. Show them compassion and concern. Children are good imitators of parents. If you absent from the church most likely they will be absent also. If you receive Holy Communion often they also will do the same. If you being disrespectful they will see nothing wrong to disrespect others as well. If you have parents, regardless of your age, treat them with respect. Honor them. Listen to them. Seek to bring them joy and your children will be bring you joy as well. Let us make Job s custom our custom for a strong Christian values family in fasting, confessing, receiving holy communion often, confessing, attending regularly church services for the right reasons, teaching god s commandments and honoring our parents. Amen! 15 NOTICE: AGIASMA WRITE-UP DEADLINE Dear St Markella church Organization Leader, As the leader of your organization (church or society) I would like to invite you to use a free write-up in the Agiasma publication, the Sunday Bulletin or the website of our community of St. Markella. In your write up, you may wish to announce your up-coming events or you wish to show your gratitude to special people of your organization, or you may post a flyer of your event, etc. In any way, you may be given a half page in the publication provided that you do so in time, or two weeks prior to the publications send-out date as it is post it below. Please remember that the church office will not be responsible for editing or spelling corrections to your write-up and as long your write-up is in proper language, which will be personally approved by Fr. Sarantis. No write ups will be done by the office of the church. If you have not submit your write up on time there will not be a write up for your organization in that monthly issue. A sample of your write up may consists of such as, but not limited to: 1. Greetings 2. Report of past events with thanksgivings 3. Upcoming events 4. Or a flyer of the event Below are the deadlines for the upcoming Agiasma issues 1. March 15, 2012 for the April 1 May 15th issue. 2. May 1, 2012 for the May 15th June 30 issue. 3. June 15, 2012 for the July 1 - August 15 issue. 4. August 1, 2012 for the Aug Sept. 30 issue. 5. Sept 15, 2012 for the Oct 1 to Nov. 15 issue. 6. Nov. 1, 2012 for the Nov 15 Dec 30 issue. 7. Dec. 15, 2012 for the Jan. 1, 2013 to Feb. 15, 2013 issue 8. Feb. 1, 2013 for the Feb. 15, 2013 to March 30, 2013 issue Further, if your organization wishes to use the church hall or schedule an event at our church it needs to be cleared by the church office first. For this reason, I would suggest that you have your annual event schedules post it with the church office not later then August 1, No two fun raisers will be allowed on the same day.
