Ἡ ζωὴ καὶ ἡ Ἀνάστασις ἡμῶν, Κύριε δόξα σοι. Ἠχος δʹ. Ταχὺ προκατάλαβε. Οἱ Μάρτυρές σου Κύριε, ἐν τῇ ἀθλήσει αὐτῶν, στεφάνους ἐκομίσαντο τῆς ἀφθαρσίας, ἐκ σοῦ τοῦ Θεοῦ ἡμῶν σχόντες γὰρ τὴν ἰσχύν σου, τοὺς τυράννους καθεῖλον, ἔθραυσαν καὶ δαιμόνων, τὰ ἀνίσχυρα θράση. Ἐμβὰς δὲ εἰς ἓν τῶν πλοίων, ὃ ἦν Σίμωνος, ἠρώτησεν αὐτὸν ἀπὸ τῆς γῆς ἐπαναγαγεῖν ὀλίγον, καθίσας δὲ ἐκ τοῦ πλοίου ἐδίδασκεν τοὺς ὄχλους. Ὡς δὲ ἐπαύσατο λαλῶν, εἶπεν πρὸς τὸν Σίμωνα, Ἐπανάγαγε εἰς τὸ βάθος καὶ χαλάσατε τὰ δίκτυα ὑμῶν εἰς ἄγραν. Καὶ ἀποκριθεὶς Σίμων εἶπεν, Ἐπιστάτα, δι ὅλης νυκτὸς κοπιάσαντες οὐδὲν ἐλάβομεν, ἐπὶ δὲ τῷ ῥήματί σου χαλάσω τὰ δίκτυα. Καὶ τοῦτο ποιήσαντες συνέκλεισαν πλῆθος ἰχθύων πολύ, διερρήσσετο δὲ τὰ δίκτυα αὐτῶν. Καὶ κατένευσαν τοῖς μετόχοις ἐν τῷ ἑτέρῳ πλοίῳ τοῦ ἐλθόντας συλλαβέσθαι αὐτοῖς καὶ ἦλθαν, καὶ ἔπλησαν ἀμφότερα τὰ πλοῖα ὥστε βυθίζεσθαι αὐτά. Ἰδὼν δὲ Σίμων Πέτρος προσέπεσεν τοῖς γόνασιν Ἰησοῦ λέγων, Ἔξελθε ἀπ ἐμοῦ, ὅτι ἀνὴρ ἁμαρτωλός εἰμι, κύριε θάμβος γὰρ περιέσχεν αὐτὸν καὶ πάντας τοὺς σὺν αὐτῷ ἐπὶ τῇ ἄγρᾳ τῶν ἰχθύων ὧν συνέλαβον,ὁμοίως δὲ καὶ Ἰάκωβον καὶ Ἰωάννην υἱοὺς Ζεβεδαίου, οια ἦσαν κοινωνοὶ τῷ Σίμωνι. Brethren, you are the temple of the living God; as God said, "I will live in them and move among them, and I will be their God, and they shall be my people. Therefore come out from them, and be separate from them, says the Lord, and touch nothing unclean; then I will welcome you, and I will be a father to you, and you shall be my sons and daughters, says the Lord Almighty." Since we have these promises, beloved, let us cleanse ourselves from every defilement of body and spirit, and make holiness perfect in the fear of God. At that time, Jesus was standing by the lake of Gennesaret. And he saw two boats by the lake; but the fishermen had gone out of them and were washing their nets. Getting into one of the boats, which was Simon s, he asked him to put out a little from the land. And he sat down and taught the people from the boat. And when he had ceased speaking, he said to Simon, Put out into the deep and let down your nets for a catch. And Simon answered, Master, we toiled all night and took nothing! But at your word I will let down the nets. And when they had done this, they enclosed a great shoal of fish; and as their nets were breaking, they beckoned to their partners in the other boat to come and help them. And they came and filled both the boats, so that they began to sink. But when Simon Peter saw it, he fell down at Jesus knees, saying, Depart from me, for I am a sinful man, O Lord. For he was astonished, and all who were with him, at the catch of fish which they had taken; and so also were James and John, sons of Zebedee, who were partners with Simon. And Jesus said to Simon, Do not be afraid; henceforth you will be catching Continued on next page

4 καὶ εἶπεν πρὸς τὸν Σίμωνα ὁ Ἰησοῦς, Μὴ φοβοῦ ἀπὸ τοῦ νῦν ἀνθρώπους ἔσῃ ζωγρῶν. Καὶ καταγαγόντες τὰ πλοῖα ἐπὶ τὴν γῆν ἀφέντες πάντα ἠκολούθησαν αὐτῷ. men. And when they had brought their boats to land, they left everything and followed him. He told Simon and his companions to sail off a little from the land and to let down the net for a draught. But they replied that they had been toiling the whole night and had caught nothing. However, in the name of Christ, they let down the net, and immediately it was full of fish. By a visible sign and by a miraculous type and representation, they were fully convinced that their labor would be rewarded, and the zeal displayed in spreading out the net of the gospel teaching would be fruitful. Within this net they should most certainly catch the shoals of the heathen. But note that neither Simon nor his companions could draw the net to land. Speechless from fright and astonishment for their wonder had made them mute they beckoned to their partners, to those who shared their labors in fishing, to come and help them in securing their prey. For many have taken part with the holy apostles in their labors, and still do so, especially those who inquire into the meaning of what is written in the holy Gospels. Yet besides them there are also others: the pastors and teachers and rulers of the people, who are skilled in the doctrines of truth. For the net is still being drawn, while Christ fills it, and calls to conversion those who, according to the Scripture phrase, are in the depths of the sea, that is to say, those who live in the surge and waves of worldly things. 12 St. Eustathius the Great Martyr Saint Callistratus was a native of Carthage. An ancestor of St Callistratus, Neochorus, has served under the emperor Tiberius in Palestine, under the command of Pontius Pilate, the procurator of Judea, and was a witness to the suffering on the Cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, His voluntary death and glorious Resurrection. The saint s father was a Christian, and he raised his son in faith and piety. Also like his father, St Callistratus became a soldier and excelled among his pagan military comrades by his good conduct and gentle disposition. At night when everyone slept, he usually stayed up at prayer. Once, a soldier sleeping nearby heard St Callistratus invoking the Name of the Lord Jesus Christ, and he reported this to the military commander, who in turn summoned Callistratus, interrogated him and wanted to make him offer sacrifice to idols. The saint resolutely refused to do this, so the military commander ordered that the saint be beaten. Then, covered with wounds, the saint was dragged over sharp stones. The beating and the torments did not sway the firm will and brave endurance of the sufferer. The saint was sewn up in a leather sack and drowned in the sea. By God s mercy, however, the sack struck a sharp rock and was torn open. St Callistratus came to dry land unharmed, carried by dolphins. Viewing such a miracle, forty-nine soldiers came to believe in Christ. 27 September Then the military commander threw St Callistratus and the believing soldiers into prison. Before this, all of them were subjected to innumerable floggings. In jail St Callistatus continued to preach the Word of God to the soldiers and he bolstered their spirits for martyrdom. Summoned again before the military commander, the sufferers firmly confessed their faith in Christ, after which they were bound hand and foot and thrown into a dam. But there their bonds broke, and with bright faces the holy martyrs stood in the water, rejoicing in their Baptism, which coincided with the act of martyrdom. Beautiful bright crowns appeared over their heads, and all heard a voice: Be brave, Callistratus, with your company, and come rest in the eternal habitations. At the same time, the earth shuddered and an idol standing nearby fell down and smashed. Seeing this, another 135 soldiers also believed in the Lord Jesus Christ. The military commander, fearing a mutiny in the army, did not put them on trial, but again imprisoned St Callistratus with the others, where they fervently prayed and gave thanks to the Creator for giving them power to endure such sufferings. At night the martyrs were cut to pieces with swords by order of the military commander. Their holy relics were buried by the 135 soldiers who remained alive. Later, a church was built on the spot of their sufferings, as St Callistatus had foretold. Ὁ Ἅγιος Καλλίστρατος Καταγόταν ἀπὸ τὴν Καρχηδόνα. Οἱ γονεῖς του, καθὼς καὶ οἱ πρόγονοί του, ἦταν εὐσεβέστατοι χριστιανοί. Ὅταν μεγά ωσε ὁ Κα ίστρατος, κατατάχθηκε στὸ στρατὸ σὰν νεοσύ εκτος. Ἡ «ὁμίχλη» τῆς σαρκολατρείας ποὺ ἐπικρατοῦσε στὸ στράτευμα δὲν ἐπηρέασε καθό ου τὸν Κα ίστρατο. Ἀντίθετα μά ιστα, κα ιέργησε ἀκόμα περισσότερο τὶς εὐσεβεῖς συνήθειές του. Μιὰ ἀπ αὐτὲς ἦταν νὰ προσεύχεται κατὰ τὴ νύκτα. Αὐτὸ ὅταν τὸ εἶδαν οἱ συνάδελφοί του, τὸν κατήγγειλαν στὸ στρατηγὸ Περσεντῖνο (287 μ.χ.). Αὐτὸς ἀμέσως τὸν κά εσε, καὶ ὅταν ἄκουσε καὶ ἀπὸ τὸν ἴδιο ὅτι εἶναι χριστιανός, διέταξε καὶ τὸν βασάνισαν, σκληρά. Κατόπιν, ἀφοῦ τὸν ἔδεσαν μέσα σ ἕναν σάκο, τὸν ἔριξαν στὴ θά ασσα. Ἀ ὰ μὲ θαῦμα ὁ σάκος σχίστηκε, καὶ δυὸ δελφίνια ἔφεραν σῶο καὶ 27 Σεπτεµβρίου ἄβ αβη τὸν Κα ίστρατο, στὴν στεριά. Τότε, 49 στρατιῶτες ποὺ εἶδαν τὸ γεγονὸς πίστεψαν στὸ Χριστό, καὶ ἀφοῦ ἔτρεξαν στὸν Κα ίστρατο, τοῦ εἶπαν: «Πράγματι, εἴδαμε ὅτι ὑπάρχει στ ἀ ήθεια καὶ εἶναι μεγά ος ὁ Θεός σου, ὁ ὁποῖος καὶ ἀπὸ τὸν βυθὸ τῆς θά ασσας ὑπερφυσικὰ σὲ ἔβγαλε. Θὰ μποροῦσε, ἄραγε, νὰ δεχθεῖ καὶ ἐμᾶς τοὺς εἰδωλολάτρες;». Ὁ Κα ίστρατος τοὺς ἀπάντησε: «Ὁ δικός μου Κύριος Ἰησοῦς Χριστός, ἐκείνους ποὺ ἔρχονται κοντὰ του δὲν τοὺς διώχνει. Διότι Ἐκείνου ὁ λόγος εἶναι: «Δεῦτε πρὸς ἐμὲ πάντες οἱ κοπιῶντες καὶ πεφορτισμένοι, καγῶ ἀναπαύσω ὑμᾶς». Τότε ὁ Κα ίστρατος κατήχησε ὅ ους αὐτοὺς τοὺς στρατιῶτες μέσα στὴν φυλακή. Ὁ δὲ Περσεντῖνος, ἐρχόμενος σὲ ἀδιέξοδο ἀπὸ τὴν πίστη τους, ὅ ους τοὺς ἀποκεφά ισε.
