Υστερα απὀ τὀσα χρὀνια, εἰναι πλἐον βἐβαιο οτι οι αγνοοὐμενοι ἐχουν εκτελεσθεἰ απὀ τους Τοὐρκους! 1974 Turkish Invasion Against CYPRUS July 20, 1974 Time: 04:35, Saturday 20 July The graphic and most beautiful ancient Greek town of Kyrenia as it was seen by the Turkish pilots the morning of 20 July 1974 when the air -raids of the Turkish air-force against Cyprus began. Bombings were more intense on the northern shores of Cyprus and around the "Pente Mili" (five miles west of the town of Kyrenia) area where all the landings took place. At 05:30 Saturday 20 July 1974 the Turkish air-force bombed and destroyed the 256 Infantry Regiment of the Cyprus National Guard at Glykiotissa, the 190 Light Artillery Regiment at Acheropoiitos Greek Orthodox Monastery, the 182 Heavy Artillery Regiment of Bosporos, as well as all the military installations along the Kyrenia northern coastline at Panagra. 3

6 ΑΠΟΣΤΟΛΟΣ Επιστολή Ιακώβου Ε Παρετε, αδελφοί μου, ως παράδειγμα κακοπαθείας, υπομονής και μεγαλοκαρδίας τους προφήτας, οι οποίοι σαν απεσταλμένοι και πρεσβευταί του Θεού ελάλησαν προς τους ανθρώπους εξ ονόματος του Κυρίου. 11 Ιδού, μακαρίζομεν και καλοτυχίζομεν εκείνους, που δεικνύουν υπομονήν. Από την Αγ. Γραφήν έχετε ακούσει και μάθει την υπομονήν του Ιώβ και είδατε το χαρούμενον και ευτυχισμένον τέλος, που έδωσεν εις την δοκιμασίαν του ο Κυριος. Διότι ο Κυριος είναι πολυεύσπλαγχνος και γεμάτος συμπάθειαν και στοργήν. 12 Προ πάντων δε, αδελφοί μου, μη καταφεύγετε στους όρκους. Μη ορκίζεσθε ούτε στον ουρανόν ούτε εις την γην ούτε κανένα άλλον όρκον. Να λέγετε πάντοτε την αλήθειαν και το ναι, που θα πήτε, να είναι αληθινόν και πραγματικόν ναι και το όχι, να είναι πράγματι όχι, δια να μη περιπέσετε εις την κρίσιν και καταδίκην εκ μέρους του Θεού. 13 Υπάρχει μεταξύ σας κανείς, που ταλαιπωρείται και θλίβεται; Ας προσεύχεται, ζητών από τον Θεόν παρηγορίαν και λύτρωσιν. Ευρίσκεται κανείς εις κατάστασιν ευθυμίας; Ας ψάλλη, δοξολογών τον Θεόν. 14 Είναι κανείς μεταξύ σας ασθενής; Ας προσκαλέση τους πρεσβυτέρους της Εκκλησίας και ας προσευχηθούν επάνω από αυτόν και δι' αυτόν προς τον Θεόν, αλείψαντες αυτόν με έλαιον στο όνομα του Κυρίου. 15 Και η προσευχή αυτή, που θα εμπνέεται από την πίστιν και θα γίνεται με πίστιν, θα θεραπεύση και θα σώση τον άρρωστον από την σωματικήν ασθένειαν, και θα τον σηκώση ο Κυριος από το κρεββάτι της αρρώστιας και εάν ο ασθενής έχη κάμει αμαρτίας, θα του συγχωρηθον εκ μέρους του Θεού. 16 Να εξομολογήσθε με ειλικρινή μετάνοιαν και συντριβήν μεταξύ σας τα αμαρτήματά σας και να προσεύχεσθε ο ένας υπέρ του άλλου, δια να θεραπευθήτε και από τας σωματικάς και από τας πνευματικάς ασθενείας. Διότι δέησις, η οποία προσφέρεται με πίστιν πολλήν προς τον Θεόν εκ μέρους του δικαίου, έχει μεγάλην δύναμιν και φέρει θαυμαστά αποτελέσματα. 17 Ο προφήτης Ηλίας ήτο άνθρωπος όμοιος με ημάς, με την αυτήν ασθενή ανθρωπίνην φύσιν. Και εν τούτοις με θερμήν προσευχήν πίστεως προσηυχήθη, δια να μη βρέξη, και δεν έβρεξεν ο Θεός επάνω εις την γην τρία έτη και εξ μήνας. 18 Και πάλιν προσηυχήθη, δια να βρέξη, και ο ουρανός έδωκε πλουσίαν βροχήν και εβλάστησεν και εκαρποφόρησε η γη. 19 Αδελφοί, εάν κανείς από σας παραπλανηθή και φύγη μακρυά από την χριστιανικήν αλήθειαν, και ο αδελφός τον επαναφέρη στον δρόμον του Θεού, 20 ας γνωρίζη, ότι εκείνος που επαναφέρει έναν αμαρτωλόν από τον δρόμον της πλάνης του στον δρόμον της αληθείας, θα σώση μίαν ψυχήν από τον αιώνιον θάνατον και θα εξαλείψη πλήθος αμαρτιών, τας οποίας ο παραπλανηθείς αμαρτωλός είχε διαπράξει. St. James Universal Letter 5:10-20 EPISTLE BRETHREN, take as an example of suffering and patience the prophets who spoke in the name of the Lord. Behold, we call those happy who were steadfast. You have heard of the steadfastness of Job, and you have seen the purpose of the Lord, how the Lord is compassionate and merciful. But above all, my brethren, do not swear, either by heaven or by earth or with any other oath, but let your yes be yes and your no be no, that you may not fall under condemnation. Is any one among you suffering? Let him pray. Is any cheerful? Let him sing praise. Is any among you sick? Let him call for the elders of the church, and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord; and the prayer of faith will save the sick man, and the Lord will raise him up; and if he has committed sins, he will be forgiven. Therefore confess your sins to one another, and pray for one another, that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous man has great power in its effects. Elijah was a man of like nature with ourselves and he prayed fervently that it might not rain, and for three years and six months it did not rain on the earth. Then he prayed again and the heaven gave rain, and the earth brought forth its fruit. My brethren, if any one among you wanders from the truth and some one brings him back, let him know that whoever brings back a sinner from the error of his way will save his soul from death and will cover a multitude of sins. 6

7 ΚΑΤΑ ΜΑΤΘΑΙΟΝ Θ 1-8 ΕΥΑΓΓΕΛΙΟ 1 Αφού εμπήκε στο πλοίον ο Ιησούς, επέρασε την λίμνην και ήλθε εις την πόλιν του, δηλαδή την Καπερναούμ. 2 Και ιδού έφεραν προς αυτόν ένα παραλυτικόν, κατάκοιτον επάνω στο κρεββάτι και όταν είδεν ο Ιησούς την πίστιν του παραλυτικού και εκείνων, που τον έφεραν, είπε στον παραλυτικόν θάρρος, παιδί μου, μη φοβήσαι ότι αι αμαρτίαι σου θα εμποδίσουν την θεραπείαν δια την πίστιν σου, σου έχουν ήδη συγχωρηθή αι αμαρτίαι. 3 Και ιδού, μερικοί από τους γραμματείς που ήσαν παρόντες, εσκέφθησαν αυτός βλασφημεί (είναι ασεβής, διότι οικιειοποιείται την εξουσίαν του Θεού να συγχωρή αμαρτίας ). 4 Οταν δε ο Ιησούς, ως παντογνώστης, είδε ολοκάθαρα τας πονηράς σκέψεις των γραμματέων, είπε διατί κυκλοφορείτε στον νουν και την καρδίαν σας τέτοιες πονηρές σκέψεις; 5 Διότι, τι είναι ευκολώτερον να πη κανείς Σου έχουν συγχωρηθή αι αμαρτίαι σου η να πη Σηκω επάνω και περιπάτει; Το πρώτον, ως εσωτερικόν, δεν το βλέπει κανείς και επομένως δεν ημπορεί να το εξακριβώση. Το δεύτερον, ως εξωτερικόν και αισθητόν, δεν ημπορεί να το αρνηθή, όσον κακόπιστος και αν είναι. 6 Δια να ιδήτε δε και μάθετε καλά, ότι ο υιός του ανθρώπου έχει εξουσίαν να συγχωρή αμαρτίας και να θεραπεύη ασθενείας, τότε λέγει προς τον παραλυτικόν σήκω επάνω υγιής, πάρε το κρεββάτι σου και πήγαινε στο σπίτι σου. 7 Και αμέσως εσηκώθη ο παραλυτικός εντελώς υγιής και επήγε στο σπίτι του. 8 Οταν δε τα πλήθη του λαού είδαν αυτό που έγινε, εθαύμασαν και εδόξασαν τον Θεόν, ο οποίος έδωσεν στον Ιησούν, που τον εθεωρούσαν ως ένα εκ των ανθρώπων, τέτοιαν εξουσίαν, να συγχωρή δηλαδή αμαρτίας και να θεραπεύη ασθενείας. And behold, they brought to him a paralytic, lying on his bed; and when Jesus saw their faith he said to the paralytic, "Take heart, my son; your sins are forgiven." And behold, some of the scribes said to themselves, "This man is blaspheming." But Jesus, knowing their thoughts, said, "Why do you think evil in your hearts? For which is easier, to say 'Your sins are forgiven,' or to say 'Rise and walk?' But that you may know that the Son of man has authority on earth to forgive sins" he then said to the paralytic -- "Rise, take up your bed and go home." And he rose and went home. When the crowds saw it, they were afraid, and they glorified God, who had given such authority to men. 7

8 SAINTS AND FEASTS 20 Ιουλίου - Προφήτης Ηλίας ο Θεσβίτης Μέσα στη χορεία των Προφητών της Παλαιάς Διαθήκης ξεχωριστή είναι η θέση του προφήτη Ηλία. Στην Καινή Διαθήκη το όνομα του προφήτη Ηλία αναφέρεται πολλές φορές από τον ίδιο τον Ιησού Χριστό. Ο Ζαχαρίας, ο πατέρας του Προδρόμου, είπε πως ο Ιωάννης θα ερχόταν «ἐν πνεύματι καὶ δυνάμει Ἠλίου» (Λουκ., κεφ. α, στ. 17), θα είχε δηλαδή τα γνωρίσματα και το ζήλο του προφήτη Ηλία, θα ήταν ο ίδιος ο προφήτης Ηλίας, όπως ο λαός τον περίμενε να ξανάρθει. Ο Ιησούς Χριστός, όταν έδωσε μαρτυρία για τον πρόδρομο Ιωάννη κι έπλεξε το εγκώμιο του, είπε πως αυτός ήταν ο Ηλίας «Αν θέλετε, να το παραλεχθείτε, αυτός είναι ο Ηλίας, που έμελλε να έλθει». Το πιο σπουδαίο είναι ότι οι μαθητές επάνω στο βουνό, κατά τη θεία Μεταμόρφωση, είδαν τους δυο Προφήτες, τον Μωϋσή και τον Ηλία, να συνομιλούν με τον Ιησού Χριστό. Όλα αυτά φανερώνουν την ξεχωριστή θέση του προφήτη Ηλία ανάμεσα στους Προφήτες και μέσα στη συνείδηση του λαού. Ακόμα και στο πρόσωπο του Ιησού Χριστού, ακούοντας τη διδασκαλία και βλέποντας τα θαύματά του, έβλεπαν τον προφήτη Ηλία, που είχε ξανάρθει. Ο Ιησούς Χριστός ρώτησε «Τίνα με λέγουσιν οἱ ἄνθρωποι εἶναι;». Κι οι μαθητές είπαν «Ἰωάννην τὸν βαφτιστήν, ἄλλοι δὲ Ἠλίαν...». Ο προφήτης Ηλίας έζησε τον 9 π.χ. αιώνα και ήταν γιος του Σωβάκ και καταγόταν από τη Θέσβη (γι' αυτό και ονομάστηκε Θεσβίτης), το σημερινό El Istib, της περιοχής Γαλαάδ, και άνηκε στην φυλή του Ααρών. Όταν γεννήθηκε, ο πατέρας του είδε μία θεία οπτασία: Δύο άνδρες λευκοφορεμένοι τον ονόμαζαν Ηλία, τον σπαργάνωναν με φωτιά και του έδιναν φλόγα να φάει. Τότε ο πατέρας του, πήγε στα Ιεροσόλυμα και αφού περιέγραψε την οπτασία στους ιερείς, εκείνοι του είπαν ερμηνεύοντας την οπτασία, ότι ο γιος του θα γίνει προφήτης και θα κρίνει το Ισραήλ με δίκοπο μαχαίρι και φωτιά. Ο Προφήτης Ηλίας άσκησε το προφητικό του χάρισμα επί 25 έτη στα χρόνια του βασιλέα Αχαάβ, που βασίλεψε στα π.χ. Ο Αχαάβ και μάλιστα η γυναίκα του Ιεζάβελ ήσαν άνθρωποι ασεβείς κι εναντίον τους ήταν ο πόλεμος του προφήτη Ηλία. Η Ιεζάβελ, που δεν ήταν ισραηλίτισσα και γινόταν αιτία να νοθεύεται η πίστη από ειδωλολατρικά έθιμα, αυτή λοιπόν κυνήγησε πολύ τον προφήτη Ηλία, γι αυτό κι εκείνος αναγκαζόταν διαρκώς να φεύγει και να κρύβεται. Η Ιεζάβελ κυνηγούσε τον προφήτη Ηλία όπως η Ηρωδιάδα τον Ιωάννη τον Πρόδρομο. Πρώτο μεγάλο σημείο, που έδωσε ο προφήτης Ηλίας, ήταν που προσευχήθηκε και δεν έβρεξε για τριάμισι χρόνια. Σ αυτό το διάστημα ο Προφήτης κρυβόταν σε μια σπηλιά σ ένα χείμαρρο πέρ από τον Ιορδάνη. Εκεί υπήρχε λίγο νερό, κι ένας κόρακας του πήγαινε τροφή κάθε πρωί. Όταν στέρεψε το νερό, έφυγε ο Προφήτης και πήγε στα Σάρεπτα της Σιδωνίας όλα αυτά με εντολή του Θεού. Εκεί φιλοξενήθηκε σε μια χήρα γυναίκα, που είχε λίγο αλεύρι και λίγο λάδι, κι όμως έτρωγαν όλο τον καιρό και δεν έλειψαν. Η χήρα γυναίκα είχε ένα παιδί κι έτυχε να αρρωστήσει και να πεθάνει. Τότε ο Προφήτης προσευχήθηκε κι ανάστησε το παιδί. Δεύτερο μεγάλο σημείο, που έδειξε ο Προφήτης Ηλίας, ήταν που προσευχήθηκε κι ήλθε φωτιά από τον ουρανό. Με προσταγή του βασιλέα Αχαάβ, μαζεύτηκαν τετρακόσιοι ειδωλολάτρες ψευτοιερείς, που τους προστάτευε η Ιεζάβελ. Τότε ο προφήτης Ηλίας τους προκάλεσε σ ένα διαγωνισμό. Του είπε κι έβαλαν πάνω στο θυσιαστήριο τα ξύλα και το σφάγιο για θυσία, και άρχισαν να τρέχουν γύρω και να φωνάζουν όλη την ήμερα τον ψεύτικο θεό Βάαλ, για να ρίξει φωτιά «και ουκ ην φωνή και ουκ ην ακρόασις». Τότε ο Προφήτης τους είπε «Κάνετε πέρα! Τώρα θα κάνω εγώ τη θυσία μου». Έκανε δικό του θυσιαστήριο, έβαλε κι έβρεξαν καλά τρείς φορές τα ξύλα με νερό κι ύστερα προσευχήθηκε. Έπεσε τότε φωτιά από τον ουρανό κι αναποδογύρισε κι έκαψε ολόκληρο το θυσιαστήριο. 8

9 Ύστερα απ αυτό το σημείο, ο λαός έπιασε τους τετρακόσιους ψευτοϊερείς, κι ο προφήτης Ηλίας τους τιμώρησε αυστηρά. Η Ιεζάβελ, αγριεμένη, κυνήγησε τον Προφήτη, κι εκείνος έφυγε ψηλά στο Χωρήβ, εκεί που πριν πεντακόσια χρόνια ο Μωϋσής άκουσε τη φωνή του Θεού κι είδε τη βάτο να φλέγεται και να μην καίγεται. Εκεί ο προφήτης Ηλίας κρυβόταν σε μια σπηλιά, κι ο Θεός τον δίδαξε ένα σπουδαίο μάθημα. Του είπε «Ανέβα ψηλά στην κορυφή, και θα δεις το Θεό. Θα περάσει δυνατός αέρας θα γίνει σεισμός θα δεις φωτιά και θα περάσει ένα ανάλαφρο και δροσερό αεράκι. Ο Θεός δεν θα είναι ούτε στη θύελλα ούτε στο σεισμό ούτε στη φωτιά, αλλά στο ανάλαφρο αεράκι». Άλλα θαυμαστά σημεία του πορφήτη Ηλία ήταν ότι διέσχισε τον Ιορδάνη ποταμό με την μυλωτή του και τέλος ότι αντί να πεθάνει ανελήφθη με άρμα πυρός στον ουρανό. Να σημειώσουμε, ότι ο προφήτης Ηλίας, μετά από οκτώ ή δέκα χρόνια από την ανάληψη του, απέστειλε γράμματα (ίσως δι Αγγέλου) στον βασιλέα Iωράμ, προβλέποντας τον θάνατο του επειδή απομακρύνθηκε από την λατρεία του αληθινού Θεού: «καὶ ἦλθεν αὐτῷ ἐν γραφῇ παρὰ Ηλιοὺ τοῦ προφήτου λέγων τάδε λέγει Κύριος Θεὸς Δαυὶδ τοῦ πατρός σου ἀνθ' ὧν οὐκ ἐπορεύθης ἐν ὁδῷ Ιωσαφὰτ τοῦ πατρός σου καὶ ἐν ὁδοῖς Ασὰ βασιλέως Ιούδα» (Παραλειπομένων Β, κεφ. 21, στίχος 12). Το δε βιβλίο Σοφία Σειράχ αναφέρει ότι: «ΚΑΙ ἀνέστη Ηλίας προφήτης ὡς πῦρ, καὶ ὁ λόγος αὐτοῦ ὡς λαμπὰς ἐκαίετο... ὡς ἐδοξάσθης, Ηλία, ἐν τοῖς θαυμασίοις σου καὶ τίς ὅμοιός σοι καυχᾶσθαι; ὁ ἐγείρας νεκρὸν ἐκ θανάτου καὶ ἐξ ᾅδου ἐν λόγῳ Υψίστου ὁ καταγαγὼν βασιλεῖς εἰς ἀπώλειαν καὶ δεδοξασμένους ἀπὸ κλίνης αὐτῶν ὁ ἀκούων ἐν Σινᾷ ἐλεγμὸν καὶ ἐν Χωρὴβ κρίματα ἐκδικήσεως ὁ χρίων βασιλεῖς εἰς ἀνταπόδομα καὶ προφήτας διαδόχους μετ αὐτόν ὁ ἀναληφθεὶς ἐν λαίλαπι πυρὸς ἐν ἅρματι ἵππων πυρίνων... μακάριοι οἱ ἰδόντες σε καὶ οἱ ἐν ἀγαπήσει κεκοσμημένοι, καὶ γὰρ ἡμεῖς ζωῇ ζησόμεθα.» (Σοφία (Σειράχ, μη, 1<-11>). July 20 - The Glorious Prophet Elias (Elijah) Elias of great fame was from Thisbe or Thesbe, a town of Galaad (Gilead), beyond the Jordan. He was of priestly lineage, a man of a solitary and ascetical character, clothed in a mantle of sheep skin, and girded about his loins with a leathern belt. His name is interpreted as "Yah is my God." His zeal for the glory of God was compared to fire, and his speech for teaching and rebuke was likened unto a burning lamp. From this too he received the name Zealot. Therefore, set aflame with such zeal, he sternly reproved the impiety and lawlessness of Ahab and his wife Jezebel. He shut up heaven by means of prayer, and it did not rain for three years and six months. Ravens brought him food for his need when, at God's command, he was hiding by the torrent of Horrath. He multiplied the little flour and oil of the poor widow of Sarephtha of Sidon, who had given him hospitality in her home, and when her son died, he raised him up. He brought down fire from Heaven upon Mount Carmel, and it burned up the sacrifice offered to God before all the people of Israel, that they might know the truth. At the torrent of Kisson, he slew 450 false prophets and priests who worshipped idols and led the people astray. He received food wondrously at the hand of an Angel, and being strengthened by this food he walked for forty days and forty nights. He beheld God on Mount Horeb, as far as this is possible for human nature. He foretold the destruction of the house of Ahab, and the death of his son Ohozias; and as for the two captains of fifty that were sent by the king, he burned them for their punishment, bringing fire down from Heaven. He divided the flow of the Jordan, and he and his disciple Elisseus passed through as it were on dry land; and finally, while speaking with him, Elias was suddenly snatched away by a fiery chariot in the year 895 B.C., and he ascended as though into heaven, whither God most certainly translated him alive, as He did Enoch (Gen. 5:24; IV Kings 2: 11). But from thence also, after seven years, by means of an epistle he reproached Joram, the son of Josaphat, as it is written: "And there came a message in writing to him from Elias the Prophet, saying, Thus saith the Lord God of David thy father, Because thou hast not walked in the way," and so forth (II Chron. 21:12). According to the opinion of the majority of the interpreters, this came to pass either through his disciple Elisseus, or through another Prophet when Elias appeared to them, even as he appeared on Mount Tabor to the disciples of 9

17 Why people do not go to church? In spite of all the above, only few people go to church. How sad! They all readily run to dances and entertainments. They all hear with pleasure the silly words of the singers. They enjoy for hours the shameful exchanges of the actors, without getting bored. But when God speaks, they yawn, they scratch themselves, they get headaches. Again, many run to the hippodromes for the horse races like maniacs; and although no cover is provided which would protect the viewers from the rain, they stay there even when the rain is torrential and the wind blows everything away. They do not count bad weather, nor cold, nor distance. Nothing keeps them in their homes. When, however, they have to go to church even the little rain becomes to them an obstacle for going. Then, if you ask them, who is Amos or Obadiah, or how many are the Prophets and how many the Apostles, they cannot open their mouth. For irrational things, popular singers and actors, however, they can provide every detail. What a situation! We celebrate the memories of Saints and relatively few come to the church. It appears that traveling some distance seduces the Christians towards neglectfulness, although it is neglectfulness alone that prevents them. The fact is that as nothing can prevent one who has a good disposition and zeal towards doing something from actually doing it, likewise one who is neglectful and indolent (lazy) all things can prevent him from taking any useful action. The martyrs shed their blood for the Truth and you debate travelling such a small distance? They sacrificed their lives for Christ, and you do not want to make a little effort? The Lord died for you, and you despise him? We celebrate the memories of the Saints, and you get bored from coming to church and prefer to stay at home! And yet, you must come, so that you can see the devil being defeated, the Saint becoming the winner, God being glorified and the Church emerging triumphant. I am a sinner, you say, and I do not dare to look at the Saint. But, it is exactly because you are a sinner that you need to go to church to become righteous. Or do you not know that those who stand and serve at the altar have also committed sins? This is why God tolerates even priests to suffer from some passions, so that they can understand human weakness and help others to repent and be forgiven. 17

18 Since, I did not observe what I was told in the church, another one might say, how can I come to church again? Come to hear the word of God again, so that you may now try to put it into practice. When you put medicine on your wound and no result ensues on the same day, do you not put more medicine on it the next day? If a woodcutter, who tries to cut an oak tree, fails to do it at his first attempt, does he not try a second, and a fifth and a tenth time to do so? Should you not do the same? And yet, you might say, that you are prevented from going to church by poverty and the need to work. But neither is this excuse legitimate. The week has seven days. These seven days God distributed to us and to himself. He gave six days to us and left only one to himself. Is it on this unique one, then, that you refuse to stop working? But why did I say one whole day? I say it, so that you may do on this unique day what the widow of the Gospel did in the case of the merciful act. She gave two coins and received much grace from God. You too can lend two hours to God, by going to church, and you will bring back to your home benefits of innumerable days. If, however, you do not wish to do such a deed, think again, lest by this stance you may forfeit labours of many years. When God is treated with contempt, he knows how to disperse the moneys which are gained through work on Sundays. But even if you were to find an entire treasure-chest full of gold and for this reason you decided to absent yourself from the church, your harm would be so much greater as spiritual things are in comparison to material ones. 18

19 Material things, even if they happen to be many and to run plentifully everywhere, cannot be taken to the other life, or be carried with us to heaven, or appear before that dreaded seat of the Lord. Indeed, many times they depart from us, even before we die. On the contrary, the spiritual treasure, which we acquire in the church, is an inalienable acquisition which follows us everywhere. Yes, but, says someone else, I can also pray in my house. Such a man deceives himself. Although it is true that one can pray at home, it is, nevertheless, impossible to pray there as one prays at the church, where there is a multitude of fathers and a unanimous cry of supplication is offered up to God (communal worship/prayer, not isolated and individualized). God does not hear you as much when you pray alone, as he does when you implore him in union with your brothers. This is because there are in the church many more spiritual presuppositions than there are at home. There is unanimity, the harmony of the believers, the bond of love, and the prayers of the priests. Indeed, this is why the priests preside over the church services so that their more potent prayers may strengthen the weaker prayers of the people, and all of them may together rise up to the heavenly place. When we pray each of us separately on our own, we are impotent. On the contrary when we all gather together, then we all become more potent and attract to some greater degree God s compassion. On a certain occasion, Peter the Apostle, was in chains in a prison. A fervent prayer was, then, offered by the believers who had gathered together, and he was immediately liberated. What, therefore, could be more powerful than the common prayer, which proved beneficial even to the pillars of the Church? 19
