It is simple because it has been repeated and experienced so many times, by so many people, in the course of history; and it is powerful because, in a world in which so many things change and disappear, the institution of marriage continues to call us. It remains the most obvious and practical expression of love and hope in our lives. But marriage is not something that begins and ends in this life. It does not seek merely to serve the physical and emotional needs of the couple involved, important as these are. For Orthodox Christians, marriage has a higher purpose. It is one of the Mysteries of the Church. It blesses and makes holy the union of a man and a woman who want to share, in every way possible, God s gift of love and pass it on to a new generation. It has the potential to be, in this world, a reflection of God s Kingdom of love and a pathway to heaven. Marriage was created for the salvation of humanity.it is for this reason that the Orthodox Church is concerned about proposed legislative changes that seek to alter the nature of marriage. Its Judaeo-Christian origins deserve to be honoured and preserved, whatever other arrangements society may or may not make to recognise other relationships. Orthodox Bishops of all jurisdictions have made a submission to the Commonwealth Parliament explaining the Orthodox understanding of marriage, and its Christian roots, and calling for the Parliament to respect it. 2 Μήνυμα Ιερέως «Τότε ο Κύριος ο Θεός είπε," Δεν είναι καλό το ότι ο άνθρωπος θα πρέπει να μείνει μόνος. Εγώ θα του κάνω ένα βοηθό που θα είναι σαν σύντροφός του... [Και] ο Κύριος ο Θεός έκανε... την γυναίκα και την έφερε στον άνθρωπο. Τότε ο άνθρωπος είπε: «Αυτό, επιτέλους, είναι κόκαλο α- πό τα κόκαλά μου και σάρκα από τη σάρκα μου. Θα ονομασθεί γυναίκα,διότι λήφθηκε από τον άνθρωποί." Γι 'αυτό ένας άνθρωπος εγκαταλείπει τον πατέρα του και τη μητέρα του και προσκολλάται στη σύζυγό του, και γίνονται σάρκα μια.» (Γεν. 2:18, 22-24) Αυτή η ιστορία από το βιβλίο της Γένεσης μάς λέει για τον πρώτο γάμο που έγινε κατά την αυγή του χρόνου. Είναι μια ιστορία μιας μεγάλης αγάπης μεταξύ δύο ανθρώπων που μοιράζονται τα πάντα με τον Θεό. Της τραγωδίας, όταν απορρίπτουν τον Δημιουργό τους και αναζητούν την ευτυχία στα υλικά αγαθά αυτού του κόσμου και της ελπίδας, όπου ο Θεός τους δίνει την ευκαιρία να επανέλθουν σ Αυτόν και πάλι να ανοίξει τις θύρες του Παραδείσου, ούτως ώστε να μπορούν να εισέλθουν μαζί σαν ένα σώμα, μία σάρκα. Σύμφωνα με τα λόγια της αφήγησης αυτής μπορούμε να δούμε τον απλούστερο και πιο ισχυρό ορισμό του τι είναι ο γάμος: Ένας άνδρας και μια γυναίκα αφήνουν τους γονείς τους και ένώνονται για να σχηματίσουν μία καινούρια οικογένεια. Είναι απλό γεγονός γιατί έχει επαναληφθεί και βιωθεί πολλές φορές, από τόσους πολλούς ανθρώπους, κατά τη διάρκεια της ιστορίας. Και είναι και ισχυρό, διότι, σε έναν κόσμο στον οποίο τόσα πολλά πράγματα αλλάζουν κι εξαφανίζονται, ο θεσμός του γάμου συνεχίζει να μας καλεί. Παραμένει η πιο προφανής και πρακτική έκφραση της αγάπης και της ελπίδας στη ζωή μας. Όμως, ο γάμος δεν είναι κάτι που αρχίζει και τελειώνει σ αυτή τη ζωή. Δεν επιδιώκει απλώς να εξυπηρετήσει τις φυσικές και συναισθηματικές ανάγκες του συγκεκριμένου ζευγαριού, όσο σημαντικές και είναι αυτές. Για τους Ορθοδόξους Χριστιανούς, ο γάμος έχει έναν ανώτερο σκοπό. Είναι ένα από τα Μυστήρια της Εκκλησίας. Ευλογεί και κάνει ιερή την ένωση ενός άνδρα και μιας γυναίκας που θέλουν να μοιραστούν, με κάθε δυνατό τρόπο, το δώρο του Θεού, την αγάπη και να την περάσουν σε μια νέα γενιά. Έχει τη δυνατότητα να είναι, σ αυτόν τον κόσμο, μια αντανάκλαση του Βασιλείου της Αγάπης του Θεού και ένα μονοπάτι προς τους ουρανούς. Ο γάμος δημιουργήθηκε για τη σωτηρία της ανθρωπότητας. Είναι για το λόγο αυτό που η Ορθόδοξη Εκκλησία εκφράζει την ανησυχία της σχετικά με προτεινόμενες νομοθετικές αλλαγές που επιδιώκουν να μεταβάλουν τη φύση του γάμου. Οι Ιουδαιοχριστιανικές καταβολές του αξίζει να τιμούνται και να διατηρηρούνται, ανεξάρτητα από άλλες ρυθμίσεις τις οποίες η κοινωνία μπορεί ή μπορεί να μην κάνει για να αναγνωρίσει άλλες σχέσεις. 3 ORTHODOX BISHOPS CALL ON PARLIAMENT TO PRESERVE MARRIAGE STATEMENT OF THE EPISCOPAL ASSEMBLY OF OCEANIA March 22, 2012 FOR THE SENATE STANDING COMMITTEE ON LEGAL AND CONSTITUTIONAL AFFAIRS, CANBERRA Inquiry into the Marriage Equality Amendment Bill 2012 Dear Sir/Madam, The Orthodox Christian position on marriage requires an adequate understanding of how the term marriage is understood not only in our faith community, but also its broader societal implications. Marriage is regarded above all as a sacrament that has been instituted by God who created man and woman in His own image and likeness (Genesis 1:27-31). There is a strong biblical basis for this view, and the position of the Orthodox Church worldwide (not only in Australia) can never depart from the teaching of Holy Scripture. The union between a man and a woman in the Sacrament of Marriage reflects the union between Christ and His Church (Ephesians 5:21-33). Those who freely choose to enter into marriage, enter into a conjugal union which ideally leads to procreation. Whilst not every marriage is blessed with the birth of children, every such monogamous union exists to form of a man and a woman a new reality of one flesh (Mark 10:6-8). The implications of such within society are: Marriage is a unique relationship between one man and one woman wherein the human person is made complete through gender complementarity; Marriage is the very foundation of a family, which in turn is the foundation of society itself; Confusing the institution of marriage with same-sex unions will have serious consequences for religious freedom and implications for freedom of conscience; and Children should be afforded every opportunity to start life, grow and develop with both their biological parents, i.e. their mother and father. Our purpose is not that government legislation should become a tool to impose Christian ethics upon fellow citizens who do not share our beliefs. This of course would not be legitimate, given that we respect the free will of all. Rather, our concern is that the very institution of marriage, which has a Christian tradition of two entire millennia, should remain as it is, and not be confused with the political debate concerning the legal status of same-sex unions. 4 Constantine & Helen, Equal-to-the Apostles This great and renowned sovereign of the Christians was the son of Constantius Chlorus (the ruler of the westernmost parts of the Roman empire), and of the blessed Helen. He was born in 272, in (according to some authorities) Naissus of Dardania, a city on the Hellespont. In 306, when his father died, he was proclaimed successor to his throne. In 312, on learning that Maxentius and Maximinus had joined forces against him, he marched into Italy, where, while at the head of his troops, he saw in the sky after midday, beneath the sun, a radiant pillar in the form of a cross with the words: "By this shalt thou conquer." The following night, our Lord Jesus Christ appeared to him in a dream and declared to him the power of the Cross and its significance. When he arose in the morning, he immediately ordered that a labarum be made (which is a banner or standard of victory over the enemy) in the form of a cross, and he inscribed on it the Name of Jesus Christ. On the 28th Of October, he attacked and mightily conquered Maxentius, who drowned in the Tiber River while fleeing. The following day, Constantine entered Rome in triumph and was proclaimed Emperor of the West by the Senate, while Licinius, his brother-in-law, ruled in the East. But out of malice, Licinius later persecuted the Christians. Constantine fought him once and again, and utterly destroyed him in 324, and in this manner he became monarch over the West and the East. Under him and because of him all the persecutions against the Church ceased. Christianity triumphed and idolatry was overthrown. In 325 he gathered the First Ecumenical Council in Nicaea, which he himself personally addressed. In 324, in the ancient city of Byzantium, he laid the foundations of the new capital of his realm, and solemnly inaugurated it on May 11, 330, naming it after himself, Constantinople. Since the throne of the imperial rule was transferred thither from Rome, it was named New Rome, the inhabitants of its domain were called Romans, and it was considered the continuation of the Roman Empire. Falling ill near Nicomedia, he requested to receive divine Baptism, according to Eusebius (The Life of Constantine. Book IV, 61-62), and also according to Socrates and Sozomen; and when he had been deemed worthy of the Holy Mysteries, he reposed in 337, on May 21 or 22, the day of Pentecost, having lived sixty-five years, of which he ruled for thirty-one years. His remains were transferred to Constantinople and were deposed in the Church of the Holy Apostles, which had been built by him (see Homily XXVI on Second Corinthians by Saint John Chrysostom). As for his holy mother Helen, after her son had made the Faith of Christ triumphant throughout the Roman Empire, she undertook a journey to Jerusalem and found the Holy Cross on which our Lord was crucified (see Sept. 13 and 14). After this, Saint Helen, in her zeal to glorify Christ, erected churches in Jerusalem at the sites of the Crucifixion and Resurrection, in Bethlehem at the cave where our Saviour was born, another on the Mount of Olives whence He ascended into Heaven, and many others throughout the Holy Land, Cyprus, and elsewhere. She was proclaimed Augusta, her image was stamped upon golden coins, and two cities were named Helenopolis after her in Bithynia and in Palestine. Having been thus glorified for her piety, she departed to the Lord being about eighty years of age, according to some in the year 330, according to others, in 336. Apolytikion in the Plagal of the Fourth Tone He beheld the image of Your Cross in the Heavens and, as Paul, he too did not receive the call from men. Your Apostle among Kings placed the care of the Royal City in Your hands. Through the intercessions of the Theotokos, O only Loving Lord, keep it ever in peace. Kontakion in the Third Tone Today, Constantine with his mother Helen present the Cross, the most precious wood. It shames unbelievers. It is a weapon of faithful kings against their adversaries. A great sign has come forth for us which is awesome in battle.

5 Οἱ Ἅγιοι Κωνσταντίνος καὶ Ἑλένη οἱ Ἱσαπόστολοι Ο Μέγας Κωνσταντίνος γεννήθηκε το 274 μ.χ. Πατέρας του ήταν ο Κωνστάντιος ο Α' ο Χλωρός και μητέρα του η Ελένη από το Δρέπανο της Βιθυνίας. Ο Κωνσταντίνος σε ηλικία 18 ετών έγινε στρατιωτικός και χάρη στην ανδρεία του, προάχθηκε γρήγορα στα ανώτατα αξιώματα του στρατού. Ο Κύριος θέλοντας να τον βοηθήσει στον αγώνα του κατά του Μαξεντίου και του Λικίνιου, στη συνέχεια σχημάτισε στον ουρανό το σημείο του Σταυρού με την επιγραφή «Εν τούτω Νίκα», προσφέροντάς του ένα ισχυρότατο όπλο για να κατατροπώσει τους εχθρούς του. Με το χριστιανικό σταυροειδές λάβαρο με το ελληνικό μονόγραμμα «Εν τουτω νικα», τελικά νίκησε τα στρατεύματα του Μαξεντίου και έπειτα του Λικινίου. Επίσης, ήταν ο πρώτος αυτοκράτορας που ευνόησε την Εκκλησία, μετά από τρεις αιώνες ανελέητου διωγμού. Μετέφερε την πρωτεύουσα του κράτους του στο αρχαίο βυζάντιο, και εκεί έκτισε την βασίλισσα των πόλεων, την Κωνσταντινούπολη. Λίγο πριν πεθάνει, ο Κωνσταντίνος αξιώθηκε και του Αγίου Βαπτίσματος, και αμέσως μετά είπε: «Νυν αληθει λογω μακαριον οιδ εμαυτον, νυν της αθανατου ζωης πεφαναι αξιον, νυν του θειου μετειληφεναι φωτος πεπιστευκα». Τώρα, δηλαδή, σύμφωνα με το λόγο της αληθείας, ξέρω ότι είμαι μακάριος, τώρα έχω γίνει άξιος της αθανάτου ζωής, τώρα έχω πιστέψει πως έλαβα το θείο φως. Εκοιμήθη σε ηλικία 63 ετών, την 21 Μαΐου 327. Η Ιστορία ονόμασε τον Κωνσταντίνο Μέγα και η Εκκλησία τον ανεκήρυξε Άγιο και Ισαπόστολο. Ο Κωνσταντίνος ενδιαφέρθηκε πολύ και για τα ιερά σεβάσματα των χριστιανών, για το λόγο αυτό απέστειλε στα Ιεροσόλυμα την μητέρα του, για να βρει τον Τίμιο Σταυρό. Μετά την εύρεσή του, η Αγία Ελένη, αφού διχοτόμησε τις κεραίες του δημιούργησε δύο Σταυρούς εκ των οποίων τον ένα μετέφερε στην Κωνσταντινούπολη. Η Αγία Ελένη ήταν αυτή η οποία έδωσε στον Μ. Κωνσταντίνο την πρέπουσα διαπαιδαγώγηση. Άλλωστε, και ο ίδιος την τίμησε, όταν στην μεγάλη πλατεία της Κωνσταντινούπολης έκτισε δύο στήλες, μία δική του και μία της Αγίας Ελένης, που έφερε την επιγραφή: «Εις Αγιος εις Κυριος Ιησους Χριστος, εις δοξαν Θεου Πατρος, Α- μην». Η Αγία Ελένη βοήθησε να χτιστούν οι πρώτοι μεγάλοι ιεροί ναοί της Χριστιανοσύνης. Εκοιμήθη ειρηνικά το 327 μ.χ. σε ηλικία 83 ετών. Απολυτίκιο «Πρωτος πεφηνας, εν Βασιλευσι, θειον εδρασμα, της ευσεβειας, απ ουρανου δεδεγμενος το χαρισμα οθεν Χριστου τον Σταυρον εφανερωσας, και την Ορθοδοξον πιστην εφηπλωσας. 9 Πως πρέπει να παίρνουμε το αντίδωρο και τι πρέπει να ξέρουμε για αυτό; Ο Ιερός Καβάσιλας μας λέει: «Ο άρτος που διανέμεται ως αντίδωρο, έχει από πριν αγιασθεί, επειδή προσφέρθηκε στον Θεό. Όλοι οι εκκλησιαζόμενοι χριστιανοί τον δέχονται με ευλάβεια μέσα στην δεξιά κυρτή τους παλάμη και ασπάζονται το δεξί χέρι του Ιερέως που πριν από λίγο ακούμπησε και κομμάτιασε το πανάγιο Σώμα του Σωτήρος Χριστού. Επειδή αγιάσθηκε ολόκληρο, γιαυτό πιστεύεται από την Εκκλησία μας ότι το χέρι του λειτουργού μεταδίδει αυτόν τον αγιασμό σε όσους το αγγίζουν και το ασπάζονται» Βασικά πράγματα που πρέπει να γνωρίζουμε για το αντίδωρο: Πρέπει να μοιράζεται μέσα σε ησυχία και τάξη Το παίρνουμε από το χέρι του Ιερέα και όχι από το παγκάρι Τοποθετούμε το δεξί μας χέρι πάνω στο αριστερό και με α- νοιχτή την παλάμη. Οι ιεροψάλτες ψάλλουν ύμνους κατά την διάρκεια της διανομής. Πρέπει να είμαστε νηστικοί για να το φάμε. Το καταναλώνουμε όλο και δεν το πετάμε πουθενά. Μην ξεχνάμε ότι δίνεται αντί-δώρου δηλαδή αντί για το μεγάλο δώρο που είναι η Θεία Κοινωνία, αλλά και ως επιπλέον δώρο για αυτούς που κοινώνησαν Πιο αναλυτικά (του π.θεολόγου) : α. Το αντίδωρο βγαίνει από τα πρόσφορα, που προσεκόμισαν και προσέφεραν οι πιστοί, προκειμένου να τελεσθεί η Θ.Λειτουργία. (γι'αυτό και η ονομασία "πρόσφορο", από το ρήμα προσφέρω). Το πρόσφορο ζυμώνεται με προσευχές και θυμιάματα και σφραγίζεται με τα σύμβολα του Χριστού μας ΙC XC ΝΙ ΚΑ. Γι'αυτό ήδη από την παρασκευή του ενέχει ευλογία, δεν είναι κοινός άρτος. Με το που προσφέρεται στο Αγιο Βήμα, αποκτά ακόμη μεγαλύτερο αγιασμό. Τελικά, αμέσως μετά τον Καθαγιασμό των Τιμίων Δώρων, όπου το τμήμα του προσφόρου, που προσκομίσθηκε στο Αγιο Δισκάριο και την Αγία Τράπεζα, έγινε Σώμα και Αίμα Χριστού, παίρνει ο Λειτουργός τα κάνιστρα με το Αντίδωρο ένα-ένα και τα υψώνει εμπρός από την Αγία Τράπεζα λέγοντας "Μέγα το Όνομα της Αγίας Τριάδος". Αυτό είναι μιά προσομοίωση της πράξεως που προηγήθηκε στο "τα σα εκ των σων", όπου ο Λειτουργός ύψωσε και σχημάτισε στον αιθέρα το σχήμα του Τιμίου Σταυρού, δοξολογώντας ευγνωμονικά τον Πλαστουργό μας. Έτσι το Αντίδωρο αποκτά και μιά ακόμη ευλογία. Επίσης ωρισμένοι Ιερείς λέγουν και μιά άλλη σύντομη ευχή (όχι απαραίτητη - η ευλογία κατέρχεται με τη Δοξολόγηση του εν Τριάδι Προσκυνητού και Λατρευτού Θεού μας): "ευλόγησον, Κύριε, τους άρτους τούτους και τους εξ αυτών μεταλαμβάνοντας αγίασον". Ομοίως, άλλοι Λειτουργοί προσθέτουν έναν Θεομητορικό Ύμνο: "η το Χαίρε δι'αγγέλου δεξαμένη και τεκούσα τον Κτίστην τον ίδιον, Παρθένε σώζε τους σε μεγαλύνοντας". Και κάπου συνάντησα έναν ευσεβέστατο Εφημέριο (σε χωριό των Καλαβρύτων) που λειτουργεί καθημερινώς! να λέει "η το Χαιρε δι'αγγέλου δεξαμένη και τεκούσα τον Κτίστην τον ίδιον, Παρθένε Υπερένδοξε, Απειρόγαμε, Υπερευλογημένη, σώζε τους σε μεγαλύνοντας". Τούτο, πραγματικά, έχει τη θέση του, διότι το Αντίδωρο συμβολίζει το σώμα της Αειπαρθένου. Είναι τμήμα του προσφόρου, απ'όπου προήλθε ο Αμνός του Θεού. Και άκουσα κάποτε ένα παιδάκι που κοινώνησε να προσέρχεται στο Αντίδωρο και να λέει, "μαμά, να πάρουμε τώρα και την Παναγία μας". β. Καλό είναι το Αντίδωρο να υπάρχει σε ένα κάνιστρο κοντά σε όσους κοινωνούν, ώστε αμέσως μετά τη Θ.Μετάληψη να λαμβάνουν ένα κομμάτι και να σπογγίζουν τα χείλη και το στόμα τους.

10 γ. Μερικοί αποζητούν το λεγόμενο "Ύψωμα". Αυτό είναι Αντίδωρο, αλλά τέτοιο κομμάτι που να διατηρεί τη σφραγίδα του Κυρίου (IC XC ΝΙΚΑ) πάνω του. Και το θεωρούμε πιό τιμητικό. Το προσφέρει ο Ιερεύς σε όσους ήδη είχαν προσκομίσει πρόσφορο γιά την τέλεση της Θ.Λειτουργίας, ή σε όσους τιμώνται (πχ Δήμαρχος του τόπου) ή σε συγγενείς ανθρώπου, του οποίου τελούμε Μνημόσυνο, προς παρηγορίαν τους μεγαλυτέρα. Τούτο όμως δεν πρέπει να καταλήγει να γίνεται αφορμή ξεσυνέργιας ή παρεξηγήσεων. Ίδια είναι η ευλογία που παίρνουε. Ακόμη και με τα ψίχουλα που απέμειναν στο κάνιστρο!! Κι'όσο πιό ευλαβική και κατανυκτική και ανώτερη και εύτακτη είναι η ψυχή μας, τόσο πιό πολύ ωφελούμεθα.. δ. Παίρνοντας το αντίδωρο από το χέρι του Ιερέα, συγχρόνως και επικοινωνούμε μαζί του. Τον προσεγγίζουμε. Έκείνος λουσμένος στην ιερότητα και τη θεϊκή Χάρη (και στον ιδρώτα συχνά, έναν ξεχωριστό ιδρώτα κατανύξεως) κι'οι εκκλησιαζόμενοι, που μέχρι τώρα ήταν απέναντι, κάπως απόμα-κροι, να έρχονται και να τον εγγίζουν, σα να εγγίζουν τον ίδιο το Χριστό μας. Εκείνη τη στιγμή και ο Ιερέας θα δείξει μιά διακριτική οικειότητα προς κάθε ψυχή της Ενορίας του, θα τους χαιρετήσει με το όνομά τους, θα τους ευχηθεί, θα στείλει χαιρετίσματα σε κάποιον κατάκοιτο της οικογενείας κοκ. Λιτά όμως. Και χωρίς διαχύσεις ή πληθωρικά χαμόγελα ή άσχετα θέματα και καθυστερήσεις. Μέσα στο κλίμα της Λειτουργίας!. ε. Αρκετές φορές από τα πρόσφορα που έφεραν οι πιστοί περίσσεψαν πολλά. Είναι ευλογία αυτό. Δείχνει πόσο οι πιστοί συμμετέχουν στο μεγάλο γεγονός της Θ.Λειτουργίας. Οι Ιερείς κρατούν ωρισμένα, γιά να λειτουργήσουν ενδιαμέσως της εβδομάδος, και τα υπόλοιπα είναι επιτρεπτό να τα διοχετεύσουν σε σπίτια ευσεβών χριστιανών. Σκεφθείτε μάλιστα όταν υπάρχει πανηγύρι, πόσα περισσεύουν!.. Δεν είναι άτοπο να τα παραλάβουν οι πιστοί, αλλά πρέπει να παρατεθούν στο τραπέζι, όπου καθόμαστε κανονικα και κάνουμε προσευχή, τραπέζι οικογενείας, όπου όλα είναι ευλογημένα και ιερά, και έτσι το πρόσφορο, που το λαμβάνουμε ως ψωμί, προσθέτει στην ιερότητα του τραπεζιού μας. Υπάρχει και η περίπτωση να το φρυγανίσουμε λίγο, ώστε να διατηρηθεί και να το λαμβάνουμε με αγιασμό. Ομοίως και ευλογημένο τμήμα Αντιδώρου μπορούμε να φρυγανίζουμε (γιά να διατηρηθεί πολλές μέρες), ώστε να λαμβάνουμε το πρωϊ κατά την προσευχή μας. The Proskomide Service (preparation of the offerings) The Proskomide is the service of bringing the offered Gifts. It is performed at a small side-altar to the left of the Holy Altar behind the Icon Screen where the gifts are prepared. It is also called Prothesis, the place and the act of placing and preparing the gifts. The Priest does the Proskomide while the morning prayer service (the Orthros) is being sung by the chanters. Before the Priest begins the Proskomide, he makes his preparation, standing before the Royal doors in a long black robe and praying to God for forgiveness and strength to fulfil worthily his duties and obligations as celebrant of the Divine Liturgy. Then he enters the sanctuary and puts on each of his vestments. He begins the service in which the offerings of bread and wine are prepared for the Divine Liturgy. The service consists of visible things used by the Priest, actions by the Priest, and Prayers by the Priest. When we think of Christ's birth, we think of the star over Bethlehem, the shepherds, the angels, His Holy Mother, and Joseph, His earthly father. All of these are symbolised in the Proskomide. The Priest takes a loaf of bread called Prosphoron which means offering. This has been specially prepared and has a seal impressed on the top. The center square of the seal has the initials of Jesus Christ and the Greek verb NIKA, which means is victorious, and represents the Lord, the Lamb of God.

11 It is this which will be consecrated as the Body of Christ. The large triangle to the left represents the Virgin Mary. The nine smaller triangles to the right represent the Orders of Angels, Prophets, Saints, and Martyrs. The lower part of the Cross is removed and particles are taken from it to represent the souls of the living and of those departed this life. The Priest takes the Spear ( Lonchi ) which represents the spear used by the Roman Centurion who pierced the side of our Lord as He hung upon the Cross. With this the Priest cuts around the Lamb (the center square) and places it on the Diskos (a gold plate supported by a base). While piercing the left side with the Spear, he says, One of the soldiers pierced His side and immediately blood and water came forth. At the same time he pours wine and water into the Potirion (Chalice). Then he cuts out the triangle representing the Virgin Mary as well as the nine smaller triangles representing the Heavenly Hosts. At this point he mentions the names of the living and departed, placing a particle on the Diskos for each one. Finally thepriest offers a prayer for himself, and places an additional particle there. Then he places over the Diskos the Asteriskos (Star). This object is formed of two strips of metal (either gold-plated or silver-plated), joined at the center and bent at the ends so that it will stand on the Diskos. The Asteriskos symbolises the Star of Bethlehem. Now the symbolism is complete: the newly born Christ surrounded by His Holy Mother, the ranks of the heavenly Hosts, and the earthly visitors who were privileged to see the Christ child, while over Him hangs the Star of Bethlehem. As the Priest places the Star over the Lamb, he recites the words, And the star came and stood over the place where the child was. (Matt. 2:19). Then he censes the Gifts. The smoke from the incense symbolises prayer. As the incense rises to Heaven, so the Prayers of the Priest and the faithful rise to Heaven. Next the Priest takes two small covers (Veils) shaped like crosses, and places one over the Diskos and the other over the Potirion. Then he takes a large rectangular cover called the Aer and places this over the two together. Meanwhile he recites Psalm 92 praising the wonders of the universe. The covers represent the layers of the firmament. Aer means air, which in terms of our modern concept of the universe would be space. The Proskomide ends with the prayer of benediction. The Gifts have been prepared and remain at the side altar until the proper time for their removal during the Liturgy of the Faithful.

There are 4 major periods of fasting during the year and a number of other days in which Orthodox Christians abstain from meat, dairy products, eggs, fish, wine and oil. Every Wednesday and Friday (with some exceptions) is a fasting day. If a feast day falls on a Wednesday or a Friday the fasting is relaxed as indicated. There is NO FASTING the week following Pentecost (3/6). The Apostles Fast begins on the 11 th June this year and concludes with the Feast of Sts Peter and Paul on the 29 th June.
