3 NOVEMBER 13 - SAINT JOHN CHRYSOSTOM, ARCHBISHOP OF CONSTANTINOPLE This greatest of Christian orators is commemorated not only today, but as one of the Three Holy Hierarchs (with St Basil the Great and St Gregory the Theologian) on January 30. He was born in Antioch to pious parents around 345. His mother was widowed at the age of twenty, and devoted herself to rearing her son in piety. He received his literary and oratorical training from the greatest pagan teachers of the day. Though an illustrious and profitable career as a secular orator was open to him, he chose instead to dedicate himself to God. He lived as a monk from 374 to 38, eventually dwelling as a hermit in a cave near Antioch. Here his extreme ascetic practices ruined his health, so that he was forced to return to Antioch, where he was ordained to the priesthood. In Antioch his astonishing gifts of preaching first showed themselves, earning him the epithet Chrysostomos, "Golden-mouth", by which he became universally known. His gifts became so far-famed that he was chosen to succeed St Nectarius as Patriarch of Constantinople. He was taken to Constantinople secretly (some say he was actually kidnapped) to avoid the opposition of the Antiochian people to losing their beloved preacher. He was made Patriarch of Constantinople in 398. Archbishop John shone in his sermons as always, often censuring the corrupt morals and luxurious living of the nobility. For this he incurred the anger of the Empress Eudoxia, who had him exiled to Pontus in 403. The people protested by rioting, and the following night an earthquake shook the city, so frightening the Empress that she had Chrysostom called back. The reconciliation was short-lived. Saint John did not at all moderate the intensity of his sermons, and when the Empress had a silver statue of herself erected outside the Great Church in 403, accompanied by much revelry, the Patriarch spoke out against her, earning her unforgiving anger. In 404 he was exiled to Cucusus, near Armenia. When Pope Innocent of Rome interceded on his behalf, the imperial family only exiled him further, to a town called Pityus near the Caucasus. The journey was so difficult and his guards so cruel that the frail Archbishop gave up his soul to God before reaching his final place of exile, in 407. His last words were "Glory be to God for all things." Saint John Chrysostom is the author of more written works than any other Church Father: his works include 1,447 recorded sermons, 240 epistles, and complete commentaries on Genesis, the Gospels of Matthew and John, the Acts of the Apostles, and all the Epistles of St Paul. His repose was on September 14, but since that is the date of the Exaltation of the Cross, his commemoration has been transferred to this day. ST. JOHN CHRYSOSTOM ON THE VIRGIN BIRTH: IT WAS FITTING THAT THE GIVER OF ALL HOLINESS SHOULD ENTER THIS WORLD BY A PURE AND HOLY BIRTH. FOR HE IT IS THAT OF OLD FORMED ADAM FROM THE VIRGIN EARTH, AND FROM ADAM WITHOUT HELP OF WOMAN FORMED WOMAN. FOR AS WITHOUT WOMAN ADAM PRODUCED WOMAN, SO DID THE VIRGIN WITHOUT MAN THIS DAY BRING FORTH A MAN. FOR IT IS A MAN, SAITH THE LORD, AND WHO SHALL KNOW HIM [JER. 17:9]. FOR SINCE THE RACE OF WOMEN OWED TO MEN A DEBT, AS FROM ADAM WITHOUT WOMAN WOMAN CAME, THEREFORE WITHOUT MAN THE VIRGIN THIS DAY BROUGHT FORTH, AND ON BEHALF OF EVE REPAID THE DEBT TO MAN. THAT ADAM MIGHT NOT TAKE PRIDE, THAT HE WITHOUT WOMAN HAD ENGENDERED WOMAN, A WOMAN WITHOUT MAN HAS BEGOTTEN MAN; SO THAT BY THE SIMILARITY OF THE MYSTERY IS PROVED THE SIMILARITY IN NATURE. FOR AS BEFORE THE ALMIGHTY TOOK A RIB FROM ADAM, AND BY THAT ADAM WAS NOT MADE LESS; SO IN THE VIRGIN HE FORMED A LIVING TEMPLE, AND THE HOLY VIRGINITY REMAINED UNCHANGED. SOUND AND UNHARMED ADAM REMAINED EVEN AFTER THE DEPRIVATION OF A RIB; UNSTAINED THE VIRGIN THOUGH A CHILD WAS BORN OF HER.

4 13 ΝΟΕΜΒΡΙΟΥ - Ο ΑΓΙΟΣ ΙΩΑΝΝΗΣ Ο ΧΡΥΣΟΣΤΟΜΟΣ ΑΡΧΙΕΠΙΣΚΟΠΟΣ ΚΩΝΣΤΑΝΤΙΝΟYΠΟΛΗΣ Ο μεγάλος αυτός πατέρας και διδάσκαλος της Ανατολικής Ορθόδοξης Εκκλησίας γεννήθηκε στην Αντιόχεια το 347 μ.χ.(κατά άλλους το 354 μ.χ.). Πατέρας του ήταν ο στρατηγός Σεκούνδος και μητέρα του η Ανθούσα. Γρήγορα έμεινε ορφανός από πατέρα, και η μητέρα του - χήρα τότε 20 ετών - τον ανέθρεψε και τον μόρφωσε κατά τον καλύτερο χριστιανικό τρόπο. Ήταν ευφυέστατο μυαλό και σπούδασε πολλές επιστήμες στην Αντιόχεια - κοντά στον τότε διάσημο ρήτορα Λιβάνια - αλλά και στην Αθήνα, μαζί με τον αγαπημένο του φίλο Μέγα Βασίλειο (βλέπε 1 Ιανουαρίου). Όταν αποπεράτωσε τις σπουδές του, επανήλθε στην Αντιόχεια και αποσύρθηκε στην έρημο για πέντε χρόνια, όπου ασκήτευε προσευχόμενος και μελετώντας τις Άγιες Γραφές. Ασθένησε όμως και επέστρεψε στην Αντιόχεια, οπού χειροτονήθηκε διάκονος - το 381 μ.χ., σε ηλικία 34 ετών - από τον Αρχιεπίσκοπο Αντιοχείας Μελέτιο. Αργότερα δε από τον διάδοχο του Μελετίου Φλαβιανό πρεσβύτερος σε ηλικία 40 ετών. Κατά την Ιερατική του διακονία ανέπτυξε όλα τα ψυχικά του χαρίσματα, πύρινο θείο ζήλο και πρωτοφανή ευγλωττία στα κηρύγματα του. Έσειε και συγκλόνιζε τα πλήθη της Αντιόχειας και συγκινούσε τις ψυχές τους βαθύτατα. Η φήμη του αυτή έφτασε μέχρι τη βασιλεύουσα και έτσι, την 15η Δεκεμβρίου 397 μχ., με κοινή ψήφο βασιλιά Αρκαδίου και Κλήρου, έγινε Πατριάρχης Κωνσταντινούπολης, κάτι που ο ίδιος δεν επεδίωξε ποτέ. Και από την θέση αυτή ο Ιερός Χρυσόστομος, εκτός άλλων, υπήρξε αυστηρός ασκητής και δεινός ερμηνευτής της Αγίας Γραφής, όπως φαίνεται από τα πολλά συγγράμματα του (διασώθηκαν 804, περίπου, ομιλίες του). Έργο επίσης του Χρυσοστόμου είναι και η Θεία Λειτουργία, που τελούμε σχεδόν κάθε Κυριακή, με λίγες μόνο, από τότε μετατροπές. Ο ιερός Χρυσόστομος κατά τη διάρκεια της πατριαρχείας του, υπήρξε αδυσώπητος ελεγκτής κάθε παρανομίας και κακίας. Αυτό όμως έγινε αίτια να δημιουργήσει φοβερούς εχθρούς, και μάλιστα αυτήν την αυτοκράτειρα Ευδοξία, επειδή ήλεγχε τις παρανομίες της. Αυτή μάλιστα, σε συνεργασία με τον τότε Πατριάρχη Αλεξαδρείας Θεόφιλο (ενός μοχθηρού και άσεβους ανθρώπου), συγκάλεσε σύνοδο (παράνομη) από 36 επισκόπους (όλοι τους πνευματικά ύποπτοι και δυσαρεστημένοι από τον άγιο) στο χωριό Δρυς της Χαλκηδόνας και πέτυχε την καθαίρεση και εξορία του Αγίου σ' ένα χωριό της Βιθυνίας. Η απόφαση αυτή όμως, τόσο εξερέθισε τα πλήθη, ώστε αναγκάστηκε αυτή η ίδια η Ευδοξία να τον ανακαλέσει από την εξορία και να τον αποκαταστήσει στο θρόνο με άλλη συνοδική αθωωτική απόφαση (402 μ.χ.). Αλλά λίγο αργότερα, η ασεβής αυτή αυτοκράτειρα, κατάφερε και πάλι να εξορίσει τον Άγιο (20 Ιουνίου 404 μ.χ.) στην Κουκουσό της Αρμενίας και από κει στα Κόμανα, όπου μετά από πολλές κακουχίες και άλλες ταλαιπωρίες πέθανε το 407 μ.χ. Ο Μ. Ι. Γαλανός στον Συναξαριστή του, μεταξύ των άλλων, αναφέρει για τον Ιερό Χρυσόστομο, ότι υπήρξε και αναγνωρίζεται ως ο πιο άριστος και δημοφιλής διδάσκαλος της Χριστιανικής Εκκλησίας. Κανένας δεν εξήγησε όπως αυτός, με τόσο πλούτο και τόση σαφήνεια τα νοήματα των θείων Γραφών, ούτε δε υπήρξε εφάμιλλος του στην ετοιμολογία, την απλότητα, αλλά και στη φλόγα και τη δύναμη της ρητορείας. Υπήρξε ρήτορας θαυμαστός, λογοτέχνης απαράμιλλος, βαθύτατος και διεισδυτικότατος, ψυχολόγος και καταπληκτικός κοινωνιολόγος με αίσθημα χριστιανικής ισότητας, χωρίς προνομιούχους, με καθολική αδελφότητα. Ανήκει σ' αυτούς που φαίνονται «ὡς φωστῆρες ἐν κόσμῳ» (Προς Φιλιππησίους, 6' 15.). Δηλαδή σαν φωτεινά αστέρια μέσα στον κόσμο. Να σημειώσουμε εδώ, ότι ο ιερός Χρυσόστομος πέθανε την 14η Σεπτεμβρίου, αλλά λόγω εορτής της υψώσεως του Τιμίου Σταυρού μετατέθηκε η εορτή της μνήμης του την 13η Νοεμβρίου. Επίσης την 15η Δεκεμβρίου εορτάζουμε την χειροτονία του σε Πατριάρχη Κωνσταντινουπόλεως, την 27η Ιανουαρίου την ανακομιδή των λειψάνων του, αλλά η μνήμη του εορτάζεται και την 30η Ιανουαρίου μαζί με τον Μέγα Βασίλειο και τον Άγιο Γρηγόριο τον Θεολόγο. Και τέλος την 26η Φεβρουαρίου εορτάζουμε την μνήμη της χειροτονίας του σε πρεσβύτερο.

5 Judas, the social justice warrior and how each of us is becoming like him EACH ONE OF US IS POTENTIALLY A JUDAS A sermon given by Fr. Seraphim (Rose) during Great Lent, 1982 Preface by Orthodox Australia: The level of wisdom and Orthodox understanding reflected in the works of Fathers Seraphim and Herman of Platina are beyond what few could comprehend in their generation of warriors for Christ, let alone in our generation which is more looking like a generation of lukewarms than living Orthodox people. In this Sermon from 1982 Blessed Seraphim captured the quintessence of what Judas represented and how today we are in danger of all becoming betrayers of Christ like him. Fr Seraphim makes a very succinct description of the true nature of the spirit behind Judas and the motivations for which he betrayed Christ. In short, he was the prototype of today s multitude of fighters for social justice driven by their own minds, being more concerned with reasoning the waste of money Christ appeared to be allowing where instead He could have used them for some social benefit. The same trick is again being employed today on a global scale aimed at transforming each and every one of us into a Judas. The Sermon: Now when Jesus was in Bethany, in the house of Simon the leper, there came unto Him a woman having an alabaster box of very precious ointment, and poured it on His head, as he sat at meat. But when His disciples saw it, they had indignation, saying, To what purpose is this waste? For this ointment might have been sold for much, and given to the poor. When Jesus understood it, He said unto them, Why trouble ye the woman? for she hath wrought a good work upon Me. For ye have the poor always with you; but Me ye have not always. For in that she hath poured this ointment on My body, she did it for My burial. Verily I say unto you, Wheresoever this gospel shall be preached in the whole world, there shall be also this, that this woman hath done, be told for a memorial of her. Then one of the twelve, called Judas Iscariot went unto the chief priests, and said unto them, What will ye give me, and I will deliver Him unto you. And they covenanted with him for thirty pieces of silver. And from that time he sought opportunity to betray Him. Matthew 26:6-16 In this passage of Scripture, we read how, as our Lord prepared for His Passion, a woman came and anointed Him with very precious ointment; and it is very touching how our Lord accepted such love from simple people. But at the same time Judas one of the twelve who were with Him looked at this act, and something in his heart changed. This was apparently the last straw, because Judas was the one in charge of the money and he thought that this was a waste of money. We can even see the logical processes going on in his mind. We can hear him think about Christ: I thought this man was somebody important. He wastes money, he doesn t do things right, he thinks he s so important and all kinds of similar little ideas which the devil puts in his mind. And with his passion (his main passion was love of money), he was caught by the devil and made to betray Christ. He did not want to betray Him; he simply wanted money. He did not watch over himself and crucify his passions. Anyone of us can be exactly in that position. We have to look at our hearts and see which passion of ours will be devil hook us on in order to cause us to betray Christ. If we think that we are something superior to Judas that he was some kind of a kook and we are not we are quite mistaken. Like Judas, every one of us has passions in his heart. Let us

6 therefore look at them. We can be caught with love for neatness, with love for correctness, with love for a sense of beauty: any of our little faults which we cling to can be a thing that the devil can catch us with. Being caught, we can begin to justify this condition logically on the basis of our passion. And from that logical process of thinking we can betray Christ, unless we watch over ourselves and begin to realize that we are filled with passions, that each one of us is potentially a Judas. Therefore, when the opportunity comes when the passion begins to operate in us and logically begins to develop from a passion into betrayal we should stop right there and say, Lord, have mercy on me, a sinner! We must not look at life through the glasses of our passions, nor see how we can fit life into being what we would like it to be whether this is a life where there is peace and quiet or where there is a lot of noise and excitement. If we try to make life fit like this, a total disaster will result. In looking at life, we should accept all the things which come to us as God s providence, knowing that they are intended to wake us up from our passions. We should pray to God to show us some God-pleasing thing that we can do. When we accept what comes to us, we begin to be like the simple woman in the Gospel who heard the call from God and was thus able to be His minister. She was proclaimed to the ends of the world, as our Lord says, because of the simple thing she did pouring out the ointment upon Him. Let us be like her: sensitive to watching God s sings around us. These signs come from everywhere: from nature, from our fellow men, from a seeming chance of events There is always, every day, something that indicates to us God s will. We must be open to this. Once we become more aware of the passions within ourselves and begin to fight against them, we will not let them begin the process which was seen in Judas. Judas started from a very small thing: being concerned for the right use of money. And from such small things we betray God the Saviour. We must be sober, seeing not the fulfillment of our passions around us, but rather the indication of God s will: how we might this very moment wake up and begin to follow Christ to His Passion and save our souls.
