Mode 3. Let the heavens sing for joy, and let everything on earth be glad. For with His Arm the Lord has worked power. He trampled death under foot by means of death; and He became the firstborn from the dead. From the maw of Hades He delivered us; and He granted the world His great mercy. (SD) 1

Glory. For the Saint. Τοῦ Μηναίου From Menaion Ἦχος αʹ. Mode 1. Your proclamation went forth into all the earth, for it accepted your word, through which you taught the dogmas befitting God, you expounded on the nature of all that is, and you arranged the morals of society. A royal priesthood! Devout father Basil, intercede with Christ our God, to grant us His great mercy. (SD) Καὶ νῦν. Both now. For the Feast. Τοῦ Μηναίου From Menaion Ἦχος αʹ. In essence being God, mostcompassionate Master, * You assumed human nature without transmutation. * Fulfilling the Law, of Your own will * You accepted circumcision in the flesh, * to bring an end to the shadow, and to remove the passions that cover us. * Glory to Your benevolence, O Lord; * glory to Your compassion; * glory to Your inexpressible condescension, O Word. Commemorating our most holy, pure, blessed, and glorious Lady, the Theotokos and ever-virgin Mary, with all the saints, let us commend ourselves and one another and our whole life to Christ our God. (To You, O Lord.) 2

(Ἀµήν.) Matins on Sunday, January 1 PRIEST For Yours is the dominion, and Yours is the kingdom and the power and the glory, of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, now and forever and to the ages of ages. (Amen.) Kathisma I. Resurrectional. Mode 3. Christ has risen from the dead, the first of those who have fallen asleep. The Artificer of all things that were made was first born before all creation; now He has renewed the corrupted nature of our human race in himself. O Death, no longer have you dominion, for the Master of all has destroyed your power. (SD) Δόξα. Glory. For the Saint. Τοῦ Μηναίου From Menaion Ἦχος αʹ. Mode 1. O Basil, just and wise, by the Trinity standing, * entreat that we who now sing your hymns and who honor * your sacred memorial * may be given on Judgment Day * mercy, grace divine, and of offences forgiveness, * so that we might sing * with mouth and heart praise and glory * to Him who loves humanity. σὺ γὰρ Δεσπότα, The Master of the world and Creator of all things, * the One who is on high with the Father and Spirit, * on earth has been circumcised * as an infant just eight days old. * Lord, divine indeed are all Your works and amazing. * You were circumcised on our 3

Kathisma II. Resurrectional. Mode 3. Seeing how beautiful. At Your Divinity's immutability, * and at Your suffering's intentionality, * amazed was Hades, Lord, and thus lamented to itself and said: * I tremble at this human frame's uncorrupted hypostasis. * I see the invisible One waging war on me secretly. * Hence those whom I am holding are crying out: * Glory to Your resurrection, O Christ. (SD) Δόξα. Glory. For the Saint. Τοῦ Μηναίου From Menaion Ἦχος πλ. δʹ. Mode pl. 4. By conceiving the wisdom. Having drawn out the mystical wealth of God's * inexpressible wisdom as from a well, * you stored up the waters of * Orthodoxy for everyone, * gladdening the hearts of the faithful with godly joy, * appropriately drowning the dogmas of heretics. * Therefore by your labors for the truth you became an * invincible champion of the all-holy Trinity; * holy Basil the hierarch, * intercede with Christ our God * that He grant forgiveness of offences * to those observing with longing your holy memorial. (SD) Καὶ νῦν. Both now. For the Feast. Τοῦ Μηναίου From Menaion Ἠχος δʹ. Mode 4. You appeared today. Since You are an ocean of the love for mankind, * You, O Lord, put on the form of us Your servants and Your slaves, * and You were circumcised in the flesh; * and thus You granted great mercy to all mankind. Kathisma III. Τοῦ Μηναίου From Menaion Ἦχος πλ. δʹ. Mode pl. 4. By conceiving the wisdom. By the power contained in your godly words * you demolished the heresies that were dark, * you drowned all the arrogance * and the raging of Arius; * for you proclaimed to mortals that the Spirit is God indeed, * and lifting your hands in prayer, you killed off the enemies; * you attacked the worship that Sabellius imagined, * and brought the theology of Nestorius to an end. * O Saint Basil the hierarch, * intercede with Christ our God * that He grant forgiveness of offences * to those observing with longing your holy memorial. (SD) Δόξα. δʹ. Glory. Mode pl. 4. By conceiving the wisdom. Now the grace of your words which derive from God * and the mystical height and sublimity * of dogmas became for us * a ladder of divine ascent; * for when you had acquired a spiritual trumpet, * on it you, O father, proclaimed divine doctrines. * Therefore you are dwelling in a place of green pasture, * O holy one, and receive the rewards for your labors. * O Saint Basil the hierarch, * intercede with Christ our God * that He grant forgiveness of offences * to those observing with longing your holy memorial. (SD) Καὶ νῦν. δʹ. Mode pl. 4. By conceiving the wisdom. The Creator and Master of all the world, * who took flesh from your all-pure and holy womb, * made you, the all-blameless Maid, * the protectress of humanity. * For this reason all we faithful now have recourse to you, * and we ask you, O Lady, to be forgiven our 5

When the hosts of the Angels saw how You were accounted among the dead, they all marveled. You, O Savior, are the One who destroyed the might of death; and when You arose You raised Adam with yourself and from Hades liberated everyone. Blessed are You, O Lord, teach me Your statutes. "Why do you mingle the ointments with your tears full of pity, O women disciples?" Thus the Angel who was shining in the tomb cried to the myrrh-bearing women. "See for yourselves the empty tomb and understand, that the Savior has risen from the sepulcher." Blessed are You, O Lord, teach me Your statutes. Very early in the morning, the myrrhbearing women were hastening to Your tomb lamenting. But the Angel appeared to them and uttered, "The time for lamentation has ended; weep no more. Go announce the Resurrection to the Apostles." (SD) 6

Blessed are You, O Lord, teach me Your statutes. When the myrrh-bearing women had come with their spices to Your sepulcher, O Savior, they heard the voice of an Angel clearly speaking to them, "Why do you account among the dead the One who lives? For as God, He has risen from the sepulcher." Glory. We bow down in worship to the Father and His Son and the Holy Spirit, the Holy Trinity, one in essence; and we cry aloud with the Seraphim: Holy, Holy, Holy are You, O Lord. (SD) Καὶ νῦν. Both now. Giving birth to the Giver of life, O Virgin, you delivered Adam from sin, and to Eve you have rendered joy in place of sorrow. He who from you became incarnate, God and man, has directed to life him who fell from it. (SD) Alleluia. Alleluia. Alleluia. Glory to You, O God. (3) DEACON Again and again, in peace, let us pray to the Lord. (Lord, have mercy.) Help us, save us, have mercy on us, and protect us, O God, by Your grace. (Lord, have mercy.) Commemorating our most holy, pure, blessed, and glorious Lady, the Theotokos and ever-virgin Mary, with all the saints, let us commend ourselves and one another and our whole life to Christ our God. 7

Hypakoe. Astounding in appearance, refreshing by the words he spoke, the flashing Angel said to the myrrh-bearing women: Why do you look in a tomb for the Living One? He is risen and has emptied the tombs. Know Him, the unchanging Changer of corruption. Say to God: How awesome are Your works! For You have saved the human race. (SD) CHOIR Anavathmoi. Those who sow shedding godly tears when the south wind is blowing, joyously will harvest ears of life everlasting. (SD) Glory. Both now. In the Holy Spirit, as in the Father and the Son, radiates intrinsically every gift of goodness. And in Him all things both live and move. Antiphon II. Unless the Lord build the house of the virtues, in vain do we labor. But if He protect the soul, no one can conquer our city. (SD) 8

Deliver me from bloodguiltiness, O God, the God of my salvation, and my tongue shall greatly rejoice in Your righteousness. O Lord, You shall open my lips, and my mouth will declare Your praise. For if You desired sacrifice, I would give it; You will not be pleased with whole burnt offerings. A sacrifice to God is a broken spirit, a broken and humbled heart God will not despise. Do good, O Lord, in Your good pleasure to Zion, and let the walls of Jerusalem be built. Then you will be pleased with a sacrifice of righteousness, with offerings and whole burnt offerings. Then shall they offer young bulls on Your altar. [and have mercy on me, O God.] (SAAS) Glory. At the intercession of the Apostles, O Lord of mercy, blot out my many offences. (SD) 18
