NICHOLAS CHURCH OF THE WTC ΝΑΟΣ ΑΓΙΟΥ ΝΙΚΟΛΑΟΥ ΤΟΥ WTC Ήχος Δ -Εωθινόν Ευαγγέλιο Ι *********************************************************************************** Ο Άγιος Ταξιάρχης είναι ο προστάτης Άγιος της περιοχής αλλά και όλης της Λέσβου. Ιδιαίτερα τον σεβόταν οι Τούρκοι για τα πολλαπλά του θαύματα. Φορούσε σιδερένια παπούτσια και έτρεχε παντού να προστατεύσει τους χριστιανούς. Η μορφή του εβένινου εικονίσματος πείθει ότι είναι έργο μιας φλογερής πίστης, ενός απλού ανθρώπου. Το σκοτεινό πρόσωπο είναι γεμάτο δύναμη καθώς προβάλλει μέσα απ' το αστραφτερό ασημένιο πλαίσιο. Ο Άγιος Ταξιάρχης του Μανταμάδου είναι το μοναδικό ανάγλυφο, εικόνισμα της Λέσβου. Ακόμα και σήμερα οι προσκυνητές τρέφουν ανάμεικτα συναισθήματα για αυτή τη μοναδική εικόνα. Άλλοτε αντικρίζουν το πρόσωπο του Αγίου πολύ άγριο και απόμακρο και άλλοτε πολύ ήρεμο και οικείο. Στην εκκλησία του Αγίου φυλάγεται, σαν εθνικό και θρησκευτικό κειμήλιο, ο αρχιερατικός σάκος του εθνομάρτυρα Οικουμενικού Πατριάρχου Γρηγορίου του Ε. Τον σάκο αυτό αγόρασε σε δημοπρασία ο μανταμαδιώτης μητροπολίτης Πορφύριος Φωτιάδης ο οποίος κατά τον απαγχονισμό του Πατριάρχη ήταν Πρωτοσύγκελος των Πατριαρχείων. Το πανηγύρι του Ταξιάρχη γίνεται την Κυριακή των Μυροφόρων και παίρνει μεγάλη θρησκευτική λαμπρότητα. Χιλιάδες πιστών συρρέουν απ' όλα τα μέρη του νησιού με τις τεράστιες λαμπάδες τους και τα αναθήματά τους για να ευχαριστήσουν τον Άγιο. Το Πανηγύρι συνδέεται και με το αρχαιολατρικό έθιμο της ζωοθυσίας. Το ζώο σφάζεται αφού ευλογηθεί απ' τον παπά, πράο, χωρίς να προβάλλει καμία αντίσταση! Το έθιμο δείχνει πόσο παλιά είναι η λατρεία του Αγίου. Η εκκλησία γιορτάζει και στις 8 Νοεμβρίου.

St. Paul's Letter to the Galatians 2:16-20 BRETHREN, you know that a man is not justified by works of the law but through faith in Jesus Christ, even we have believed in Christ Jesus, in order to be justified by faith in Christ, and not by works of the law, because by works of the law shall no one be justified. But if, in our endeavor to be justified in Christ, we ourselves were found to be sinners, is Christ then an agent of sin? Certainly not! But if I build up again those things which I tore down, then I prove myself a transgressor. For I through the law died to the law, that I might live to God. I have been crucified with Christ; it is no longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me; and the life I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me. The Gospel of Luke 16:19-31 The Lord said, "There was a rich man, who was clothed in purple and fine linen and who feasted sumptuously every day. And at his gate lay a poor man named Lazaros, full of sores, who desired to be fed with what fell from the rich man's table; moreover the dogs came and licked his sores. The poor man died and was carried by the angels to Abraham's bosom. The rich man also died and was buried; and in Hades, being in torment, he lifted up his eyes, and saw Abraham far off and Lazaros in his bosom. And he called out, 'Father Abraham, have mercy upon me, and send Lazaros to dip the end of his finger in water and cool my tongue; for I am in anguish in this flame.' But Abraham said, 'Son, remember that you in your lifetime received your good things, and Lazaros in like manner evil things; but now he is comforted here, and you are in anguish. And besides all this, between us and you a great chasm has been fixed, in order that those who would pass from here to you may not be able, and none may cross from there to us.' And he said, 'Then I beg you, father, to send him to my father's house, for I have five brothers, so that he may warn them, lest they also come into this place of torment.' But Abraham said, 'They have Moses, and the prophets; let them hear them.' And he said, 'No, father Abraham; but if some one goes to them from the dead, they will repent.' He said to them, 'If they do not hear Moses and the prophets, neither will they be convinced if some one should rise from the dead.'"

4 ΑΓΙΟΥ ΝΙΚΟΛΑΟΥ ΒΕΛΙΜΙΡΟΒΙΤΣ Μη φοβάσαι δεν είσαι μόνος. Μόνος είναι εκείνος που δεν γνωρίζει τον Θεό ακόμα και αν όλοι οι άνθρωποι συναναστρέφονται μαζί του.αυτός, και στην πιο πολυάριθμη κοινωνία, θα έλεγε - όπως και τώρα λένε κάποιοι - «βαριέμαι, δεν ξέρω τι θέλω να κάνω με τον εαυτό μου, όλα είναι βαρετά».αυτές είναι ψυχές άδειες από τον Θεό, φλοίδες χωρίς κουκούτσι, στάχτη χωρίς κάρβουνο. Αλλά εσύ δεν είσαι μόνος αφού είσαι πλάι στον Κύριο και ο Κύριος δίπλα σου.άκουσε πώς ο μεγάλος Παύλος, ο απόστολος της οικουμένης, ήταν κάποτε εγκαταλελειμμένος απ' όλους, και πώς μιλά:«εν τῇ πρώτῃ μου ἀπολογίᾳ οὐδείς μοι συμπαρεγένετο, ἀλλὰ πάντες με ἐγκατέλιπον μὴ αὐτοῖς λογισθείη ὁ δὲ Κύριός μοι παρέστη καὶ ἐνεδυνάμωσέ με, ἵνα δι' ἐμοῦ τὸ κήρυγμα πληροφορηθῇ καὶ ἀκούσῃ πάντα τὰ ἔθνη καὶ ἐρρύσθην ἐκ στόματος λέοντος» ( Β' Τιμ. 4, ).Βλέπεις, λοιπόν, πόσο άγια σκέφθηκε και μίλησε ο δούλος του Χριστού Παύλος σ' εκείνες τις πρώτες μέρες, όταν στον κόσμο δεν υπήρχε ακόμα ούτε ένας χριστιανικός ναός, ούτε ένας χριστιανός άρχοντας! Ενώ σήμερα όλη η γη είναι στολισμένη με χριστιανικούς ναούς και οι χριστιανοί απαριθμούνται σε κάτι εκατοντάδες εκατομμύρια.μη λυπάσαι, λοιπόν, επειδή αισθάνεσαι μοναξιά στον δικό σας τόπο. Αν αισθάνεσαι σαν να είσαι στην έρημο, όπως γράφεις, γνώριζε ότι πολλοί στην έρημο σώθηκαν. Αλλά όλοι αυτοί οι ερημίτες του Θεού ανήλθαν στη μεγάλη κοινωνία του Θεού και των αγγέλων του Θεού.Υπήρχαν άνθρωποι που για πενήντα ολόκληρα χρόνια δεν είδαν ανθρώπινο πρόσωπο και όμως δεν έλεγαν «είμαστε μόνοι»! Αφού ο Θεός ήταν μαζί τους και αυτοί με τον θεό.μπορείς να ζήσεις χωρίς κανέναν και χωρίς τίποτα χωρίς τον Θεό όμως δεν μπορείς. Αυτή είναι η δική τους μαρτυρία που την παρέδωσαν στην Εκκλησία ως κάποιο κεφάλαιο δικό της.δεν είναι γνωστό εάν κάποιος άθεος μπόρεσε να επιζήσει επί πενήντα χρόνια σε πλήρη μοναξιά στην έρημο. Αυτό δεν έχει σημειωθεί στην ιστορία του ανθρώπινου γένους. Δεν είναι σε θέση ένας άθεος να πράξει κάτι τέτοιο. Σε κάποιον σαν αυτόν είναι βαρετό να ζει μέσα στην κοινωνία των ανθρώπων και ακόμα πιο μονότονο - ακόμα και αδύνατο - έξω από την κοινωνία.διότι ο άθεος αναζητά τους ανθρώπους για να τους κεντρίσει την καρδιά με την αθεΐα του και να θρέψει τον εαυτό του με τον πόνο τους. Αλλά στην έρημο ποιόν να βρει να φάει παρά μόνον τον ίδιο του τον εαυτό; Και με ποιανού τον πόνο να τραφεί παρά με τον δικό του;γι' αυτό απογείωσε τις σκέψεις σου στα πνευματικά ύψη όπου κατοικεί Εκείνος που μόνος Του είναι η μεγαλύτερη και τρυφερότερη κοινωνία από κάθε ανθρώπινη κοινωνία.εκείνον να υπηρετείς, μ' Εκείνον να συναναστρέφεσαι, σ' Εκείνον να μιλάς, για Εκείνον αγωνίσου, Εκείνον αγάπα με όλη σου την καρδιά, με όλον τον νου σου.εκείνος θα βρει τρόπους να ανοίξει τα μάτια των γειτόνων σου και την καρδιά τους, ώστε να εμφανίσει σ' αυτούς τη ζωντανή πίστη σ' Αυτόν. Τότε στον τόπο σου θα ψάλλεται η δόξα του Θεού όχι μόνον από έναν σολίστ, όπως τώρα, αλλά από μία χορωδία.ειρήνη και υγεία από τον Θεό.

5 Are we ready for Christmas? From the beginning I would like to ask: do we all feel in good standing for this Christmas celebration? Are we all at peace with each other? Do we welcome this festival so to say naturally or are we at unrest or hide anxiety, stress or worries within? If someone would walk through the city streets, the markets and see how people rush here and there, to finish shopping, could say: How unhappy are these people and how they should otherwise feel, as they find themselves worry on all these things? How unfortunate they are! How can someone welcome Christmas and celebrate it, I mean every day? We do not only wait for Christmas, but we live it even now. On Christmas day Christ was born. So this fact that Christ was born does not only include the entire time or our whole life, but encompasses eternity, it embraces everything. Therefore, everywhere and every day is Christmas. Christmas is not a static day enclosed in time as something magic: as soon as that day comes, we enter in. Because that day will come and go like any other, unless we are truly prepared for it. And we are prepared when these very days we celebrate, leaven within us and help us. Therefore, what kind of Christmas will someone celebrate when he is not in order, when his soul does not rest in God, when agitation, restlessness, emptiness, hopelessness, or despair rest within? Our whole life in this world lays on hope. Man existence is one full of hope. If someone misses this, what can Christmas do for him? If someone doesn t live this belief, can Christmas mean anything? If they do not have the fullness of God within their soul, can Christmas do something for them? But what makes man be in good standing? So this question whether are we ready for Christmas, I ask again as we move closer to the feast, to free us from worries and anxieties. Man is not in order when he tries to ignore as some try to simply forget nor when he seeks justification or excuses. The one thing that puts man in order, the thing in which man finds rest, is repentance; to repent before God, to humble himself before God, to return wholeheartedly to God. Without repentance there is no Christmas. No matter the circumstances at home, repent before God and before your brothers. This of course involves the love for God and the love of neighbor. Mo matter how [difficult] things are For love creates a different atmosphere, another state, then people can truly come together to celebrate Christmas. But I mean true repentance! Again, repentance is not to forget certain things. As sometimes when someone in a certain place feels exposed, he remembers facts, conditions, things that humiliate and grieve him, so he wants to move to another place hoping that he will be placed in order. This is flying from temptations. Of course, sometimes this could be good, if there is no other choice, or because man has no courage to do otherwise, however this does not bring healing. That one thing that man needs, the thing that really helps with his healing is to repent before God for all that he did, for all that he accused Him for. To repent of every sin before God and sinful as he is, with his ego wounded and exposed, or in whatever sate he may be, to have the courage to stand before God. If you have the courage to stand before God, with your sins, this means either courage or repentance. And of course, everyone can distinguish between the courage and repentance. Otherwise if man conceals his sins, he will hide his true self and will try to appear before God completely innocent. In this case, man becomes unconscious of his sins, or more precisely in psychological terms, he reject his sinful passions in his sub consciousness then he ll appears before God somewhat repentant, somewhat in order, somehow humble, somewhat upright, [thinking that] perhaps this is how God wants him to be. However, this does not mean putting oneself in order. Repentance is not as easy as we may think. And please take heed of this. [ ] And I would say that repentance is a blessing from God. If God does not give you His grace to repent, you cannot repent. Therefore man must not take repentance at ease. We mentioned another time, what it is written in the Apocalypse (Revelation): There were [will be] disasters, terrible things [will] happened, cities [will be] destroyed, many [will] perished, and yet people did not repent of their wickedness. They still did not return to God. And another evil came upon them, another plague, and they still did not repent. And this is written, a second and a third time. We not certain whether man [humanity] will repent, even when man is going through difficult times, it may only seem that he repents. This kind of repentance that occurs in a forceful way, let s say in a moment where you are at limit, it is not true repentance; that there is an earthquake or the world comes to its end, and you re ready to repent Or the war is imminent, or your life is in danger, so you repent. Such repentance does not hold. For man forsook God, then God abandons man, and man remains unrepentant and although he sees, he hears, he does not intend to return to God in repentance for God to heal him and save his soul. Repentance is a great wonder. For this we say Lord Jesus Christ, have mercy on me, a sinner. This prayer is a work of repentance. I mean that you repent when you ask for His grace, His forgiveness, but also you ask for repentance. It s like asking repentance when you say: Lord Jesus Christ, have mercy on me. He who asks repentance, unceasingly says: Lord Jesus Christ, have mercy on me, and when you neither can, nor that nothing happens to you and you ll give up, it means that you had no real desire for repentance.
