3 The Pastor s Letter April 2008 Απρίλιος 2008 Dear Parishioners: CHRIST IS RISEN!!! CHRISTOS ANESTI!!! The perfection of the Mystery of Cosmic Redemption has occurred. This event was consecrated and completed mystically in the Glorious and Three Day Bodily Resurrection of our Lord, Great God and Savior Jesus Christ Pascha, the Feast of Feasts and the Festival of Festivals. As we enjoy the newness of the Resurrection and the unending brilliance of the Unwaning Day of the Kingdom, let us concentrate all our efforts towards God s service. Heighten prayer, increase Eucharistic Communion, and serve our fellow-man. And when we serve one another in peace and love, all our actions are ultimately glorification of the Most Holy Trinity - God the Father, Son and Holy Spirit. Πατρικώς, + Protopresbyter Constantine G. Christofis, Ph.D.

6 President s Column April 2008 Απρίλιος 2008 Dear Parishioners, It s hard to believe that Spring is already here and we are in the midst of our Lenten Season. March started with the successful Taverna Night. Kudos to the Greek School parents who spearheaded this project. It was great to see so many people having a great time. The highlight of the evening though, was the dance performances. Dino has done a great job with them. On March 10, 2008 Great Lent began and this might be a good time to reflect on our lives. I hope each of you reads the Great Lent booklet that Father Costa sent out. The Greek School Independence Day Program was, as always, excellent and educational. Congratulations to the pupils and teachers for all their hard work. I am looking forward to my first Greek Independence Day Parade in Philadelphia on Sunday, March 30, Following Church Services we will have a bus to take us up. The more the merrier. Please try and attend this Community event. As we move into April I look forward to seeing more of you at Church and enjoying the annual Anesti meal after the Resurrection Services. Please plan to join us. Looking on into May, please mark your calendars and plan to attend the General Assembly Meeting on Sunday, May 4, where we will be discussing the upgrades to the facility, which will include the possible addition of an elevator in the Community Center & Greek/Sunday School Classrooms. We need your input and your support for this project. I look forward to seeing you all in Church and at the upcoming events: Sunday, March 30, Independence Day Parade Saturday, May 3, Greek School Community Dance Sunday, May 4, General Assembly Meeting Saturday, May 10, Philoptochos Bid & Buy Sincerely, 7 40-Day Blessings of Mother & Child The Rite of Churching Together with being baptized and chrismated, the new-born child is also "churched." The rite of churching imitates the offering of male children to the temple according to the law of the Old Testament, particularly the offering of Christ on the fortieth day after his birth (Luke 2:22). Because of this fact, baptism in the Orthodox tradition came to be prescribed for the fortieth day or thereabouts. In the New Testament Church both male and female children are formally presented to God in the Church with special prayers at this time. Also at this time, once more in imitation of Old Testament practice, the mother of the new-born child is also "churched." Here we have the specific example of the purification ritual of Jesus' mother Mary (Luke 2:22). In the Orthodox tradition the churching of the mother is her re-entry into the Assembly of God's people after her participation with God in the holy act of birth and after her separation from the Liturgy during her confinement. Thus, the mother is blessed to enter once more into communion with the mystery of Christ's Body and Blood in the Divine Liturgy of the Church from which she has been necessarily absent. The new mother should be churched before the baptism of her infant so that she can be present at the sacramental entrance of her child into the Kingdom of Christ. The official service book indicates that this should be done. 8 Youth Director News As we continue our journey through Lent, the youth programs take a short break early this month to celebrate the annual Sights & Sounds Music and Talent Festival. This 2 day event is a showcase for all the artistic, musical, theatrical, and skillful talents our youth in the Delaware Valley possess. This friendly competition between all the Greek Churches in the Delaware Valley District will take place right here at Holy Trinity in Wilmington on Thursday, April 3 rd and Saturday, April 5 th. Some of our own Holy Trinity GOYAN s will be joined by over 230 fellow GOYAN s in a myriad of competitions. From Artwork to Photography, from Handicrafts to Literary stylings our children will showcase their best efforts. Some of our children will showcase their Musical talents with various Musical performances ranging from Drums and Violins, to Piano and Bouzouki!! While even more GOYAN s will deliver Monologues and Oral Interpretations to those who will use their singing voices to collect awards. One of the most entertaining events is the English and Greek plays where each churches GOYA comes together to present an original piece of theater. Some of their creativity makes for a very enjoyable and memorable experience. The most intense of all the events is the Greek Folk Dancing competition where each church must perform a total of 3 dances, (2 of their choosing and the Kalamatiano). All the groups do a great job, and our judges always have a hard time choosing the winners. I was totally impressed with last years event, and the crowd is estimated at approximately 400 attended and guests!! I know that once again Wilmington will play host to an excellent event, and I invite all of our parishioners to join us on Saturday, April 5 th to watch, root, and encourage all of our GOYAN s to do there best. The cost is a small $10 donation to the D.V.Y.C. and Lunch is included! Progressing further into April, we continue to focus and prepare ourselves for the upcoming Holy Week. Our GOYAN s have been singing the praises to our Lord by attending Weekly Compline and Salutation services and volunteering to read the various psalms and prayer to be offered. I am proud of their commitment, and the intimate prayer service they share each week. We will once again offer a Lenten Retreat on Friday, April 18 th. This overnight lock-in will begin with a short service followed by a Lenten session geared to the GOYAN s preparation for Holy Week. We will spend the night at church in fellowship and wake Saturday morning to attend the first Liturgy of Holy Week on Saturday of Lazarus. Following Liturgy we will share a Lenten Breakfast and prepare the palm crosses to be distributed on Palm Sunday. I ask all of our GOYA parents to strongly encourage their GOYAN s to attend. It may sound like a boring time, but I guarantee your children will feel quite differently afterwards, and reap the benefits of a much more meaningful Holy Week. The end of the week brings us Great and Holy Friday where our GOYAN s will participate in church services as Altar attendants and Myrophores. The GOYA will wrap all the Pascha eggs to be distributed for Pascha, and volunteer to read the Gospel in many languages for the Agape Service. They will once again organize the annual Easter Egg Hunt for their younger brother and sister in Christ. It s a busy month here at Holy Trinity.would we want it any other way????? God grant us all a blessed and meaningful lent, Your Humble Servant in Christ, Dino Charalambides

10 Dear Parishioners, Religious Education Up-Date On Sunday, March 16, we celebrated Orthodoxy Sunday and the Procession of Icons. The Sunday School children and teachers displaying their favorite icons followed the priests and altar boys around the Church in remembrance and commemoration of the restoration in 843 of the Holy Icons to Orthodox Churches. In a few weeks, we will be celebrating Pascha. In the spirit of this great feast day, a movie on the Passion of Christ will be shown to the students on Sunday, April 13 in the Community Hall. The local Junior and Senior Divisions of the St. John Chrysostom Oratorical Festival will be taking place after the deadline for submission of articles for this month s Newsletter. Look for a write up in the May issue. Continuing with the highlighting of the Sunday School classes, Andrea Sanford, fourth grade teacher, writes: The 4th grade has studied about the liturgy, the priest's vestments and prayer. We have re-enacted the Passover story and to help better understand the relationship between the Old Testament and Nativity we did a "Jesse Tree" project. The children sang carols at the nursing home across the street and were very gracious towards the residents. Besides our regular lessons, we prepared our presentation for the Elementary Oratorical Festival. We presented What is Prayer and the Lenten prayer of St. Ephraim. Nearly every week the children receive take-home papers which may cover the gospel of the day, a saint or a feast day. We may not have had time in class to discuss the papers, but hope the parents will enjoy sharing them and their faith with their children. In addition to being the Director of the Sunday School, I am also the fifth grade teacher. God Calls Us is our class textbook. The students learn that ordinary people are called upon by God to do extraordinary things. Abraham, Moses, St. Paul, St. Philothei, St. Herman of Alaska, and St. Nectarios are but a few of the extraordinary people studied this year. The lessons are reinforced through related activities, movies, plays and discussion. In addition to covering the textbook material, the goals for the year include memorizing the Creed and the 10 Commandments and reinforcing the events in the Life of Christ with special emphasis on his Passion. This is a great group of children, exceptional in their maturity and sense of responsibility and kindness towards each other. And Nikkie Tsakataras, the sixth grade teacher writes: The sixth grade this year has an enrollment of four students, but only three come regularly. They are: Maria Berner, Stefania Karavasilis, and Maria Kirifides. We use the Bible and a wonderful workbook entitled The Christian Way of Life which the Archdiocese provides. The year begins with lessons on the Bible, Creation, Noah and God s Chosen People (The Israelites). The class then follows the Israelites on their long journey to the Promised Land. We learn about Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob (who became the Father of the Twelve Tribes of Israel), Joseph (the son who was sold into slavery), Moses (the first Prophet) and the Ten Commandments, Joshua, Ruth (King David s great-grandmother), and Israel s great King, David. During Advent and Lent, much time is given to the Birth of Jesus, His life, His teachings, the Apostles, Holy Week and His resurrection. The year ends with Pentecost and the Name Day of our Church, Holy Trinity. Also mention is made of important Saints of our church, church etiquette, and time is always given for questions and discussion. I want to thank all the parents who send their children to Sunday School and to those who eventually enter my class. Many wishes for a very HAPPY EASTER from all the Sunday School students and faculty! Yours in Christ, Helene Krikelis

12 Holy Trinity Food Pantry Recently the Food Bank of Delaware received a huge shipment of Eggs. Yes, Eggs, because eggs are full of protein and eggs are missing from the diets of the poor. People lined up to get these eggs and I m sure, with their Easter in March, some were also traditionally died. How fortunate you are if you do not have to stand in line to get eggs or any kind of food because your refrigerator is full all the time. Think on this Our food pantry helps so many people. The unknown poor, who either stand in line or go to food pantries to get whatever the food pantries, have that day. If the food pantries are low on food, they might not get enough food to feed their families. You, the parishioners of Holy Trinity, have been very, very generous by filling our bins with food. Please continue to do so as times are getting harder for the poor, as well as many, many others who were never classified as poor. Please continue to bring in any non-perishable food items, such as: Soups, fish, vegetables, meat, fruit, (any canned item), cereals, sugar, rice, pasta, cranberry sauce, baby food, coffee, tea, gravies, Any food item that will not spoil. For your convenience there are two drop-off locations: One by the Church Office and one in the Narthex. Two deliveries were made in March. One to Emmanuel Dining Room-East by Tina Ganiaris King, and one to St. Stephen s Church by Steve Nicholas and Nikkie Tsakataras. The good people of St. Stephen s told us that they were very low on cereals. When you can, please include cereal as part of your donation. We thank you for your continued Generous Support. March12th at the Emmanuel Dining Room Evie and Manny Fournaris very generously sponsored and hosted the luncheon meal at the Emmanuel Dining Room on Wednesday, March 12th. A warm meal was served to 158 men, women and children that day. Helping Evie and Manny out in the kitchen were Steve Nicholas and Tina Ganiaris. Thank you all for your generous contributions and time to this worthy cause! Our GOYA will sponsor and serve the meal at the dining room on Saturday, April 12th. If you would like to help them out on that day or if you would like to sponsor a month with your family, friends or church organization, please contact Nikkie at or Tina at Thank you for your consideration. We would love to have you join us! The Emmanuel Dining Room East is located in the Old Asbury Church at 3 rd and Walnut Streets. We serve lunch on the 12 th of every month from noon until 1 pm. 13 The Reverend Father George E. Kalpaxis, a Greek Orthodox priest for over 60 years, fell asleep in the Lord on March 8, 2008 in Austin, TX, after a short illness. He was 89 years old. One of the first American-born Greek Orthodox priests, Father George was born in Enfield, Connecticut in He was the son of the late Efstratios and Olga (Anagnostou) Kalpaxis, early immigrants from Lesvos, Greece. Soon thereafter, the family moved to Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, where Father George s father ran a small bakery and where his younger brother, Harry and his sister, Beatrice, were born. He attended Liberty High School where he participated in the basketball and track teams and sang in the glee club. As a young boy, he accompanied his widowed mother to the St. Nicholas Church in Bethlehem, where she served as its caretaker. At a very early age, he developed his love for the Church by becoming an altar boy and assisting the priests throughout his youth. It was natural then, that by the time he graduated from high school in 1936, he received the call to become a priest. This decision coincided with the desire of Archbishop Athenagoras, then head of the Greek Orthodox Church of the United States, to establish a theological school to train American born young men into the Greek Orthodox priesthood. (At that time, all the Greek Orthodox priests in America were immigrants from Greece.) However, because of the depression, the establishment of a theological school did not occur until In the meantime, Father George had a series of jobs, including working as a laborer in a silk factory and participating as a member of the Civilian Conservation Corps. In the fall of 1937, Father George entered Holy Cross Theological School, then located in Pomfret, Connecticut, as a member of its first class. He was graduated in June, 1942, married Athena Kostas of Haverhill, Massachusetts at St. Apostle s Church later that month, was ordained to the diaconate at St. Spyridon Church in Washington Heights, New York City on August 2 nd, and to the priesthood two weeks later at St. Barbara Church, in New Haven, Connecticut. Soon thereafter, he and his Presbytera (honorary title for the wife of a priest) were assigned to their first community, St. George Church, in Keene, New Hampshire, where Father George served until While there, he taught Greek School, established the church s first Sunday School and youth programs and moderated a popular radio program. From , Father George served at the Holy Trinity Church in Wilmington, Delaware. Under his direction, he established a ministry for servicemen during the war and headed the Greek War Relief Association in Delaware, which provided food and clothing for war ravaged Greece. After the war, Father George led the effort to build a new church, which opened in He was also appointed by the then Archbishop Michael as his personal representative to the National Council of Christians and Jews. It was while in Wilmington that Fr. George and Presbytera Athena s three children were born. The Annunciation Church in Houston, Texas was his next stop in his ministry. Arriving in 1954 with his young family, Father George reunited a divided community, directed the completion of the interior icons and stained glass windows of the newly built church, established a successful youth ministry, improved the Sunday School program, and created a monthly television ministry. He was a leader in interfaith activities. To this end, Father George was instrumental in having the Orthodox Church recognized by the Texas Legislature as a fourth major faith. He was also the first Orthodox member of the Houston Ministerial Association, and was present when John F. Kennedy, during the 1960 Presidential election, made his now famous speech before that group, on the separation of Church and State and the role of a future Catholic President. Additionally, Father George was a member of the Executive Board for the first Billy Graham Crusade in the new Astrodome, in 1965, when, during a two week period, over 500,000 persons of various religious backgrounds prayed together. As a founding member of Operation Understanding, Father George led a cooperative effort among various Christian and Jewish congregations, to make known the teachings of their respective denominations. As part of this effort, the Annunciation Church also sponsored a bazaar, highlighting the religious and cultural traditions of the Orthodox Church. This bazaar was the basis for the widely successful annual Greek festivals that have been held in Houston ever since. In 1966, Father George was assigned to the newly created community of Camden County, New Jersey as its first permanent priest. He oversaw the organization of the community, and the naming (St. Thomas) and the construction of the church in Cherry Hill. Subsequently, this community has become the largest Greek Orthodox church in the Delaware Valley. Another new challenge confronted Father George and his Presbytera in 1971, when he was appointed as priest of St. Nicholas Church in Baltimore, Maryland, a community made up primarily of recent Greek immigrants. Here, Father George not only provided for the spiritual needs of his congregation, but helped them establish new lives in a new environment. For the next 20 years, Father George and Presbytera Athena oversaw educational programs, translated documents, and made court appearances, working closely together until her death in Father George officially retired from parish duties in This led to new and unanticipated challenges, for a Greek Orthodox Priest never really retires from the priesthood. He led pilgrimages of the faithful to the Holy Land. He was often called upon to bless weddings and baptisms, to participate in funerals, and to conduct other church services. He served many parishes in the Baltimore-Washington area whenever a priest had to be absent from his community. He conducted Holy Week and Easter services in small churches that had no priest-- mostly in Texas and New Mexico. Bishops from around the world also called on him to serve their churches wherever he was needed. In this way, Father George often traveled to such countries as Greece, New Zealand, Hong Kong, Australia, Brazil and Argentina to minister to faithful Orthodox Christians living in those areas. While he was always witnessing his faith to others, he often said that it was their faith that increased his own. Throughout his life, Father George worked with, and contributed to, many charities, particularly those assisting the homeless and hungry, as well as helping young people attend college through the Presbytera Athena Kalpaxis Memorial Educational Scholarship fund. Surviving are sons, Stratton Steven Kalpaxis and Dr. James G. Kalpaxis of Austin, Texas; daughter and son-in-law Anita and Ralph Jones of Westminster, Maryland; granddaughter, Maria M. Miller of Winston-Salem, North Carolina; and many nieces and nephews. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that any memorial contributions be made to the Presbytera Athena Kalpaxis Memorial Educational Fund, c/o PO Box 18294, Baltimore, MD The viewing for Father George was held at Saint Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church, 520 South Ponca St., Baltimore, Maryland, on Thursday, March 13th, beginning at 10:00 a.m. and continuing throughout the day, with the Trisagion Service commencing that evening at 7:30 p.m. Funeral services were held at the church on Friday, March 14th, beginning at 10:00 a.m.

16 LAZARUS SATURDAY Apolytikion in the First Tone O Christ our God, before Your Passion, You raised Lazarus from the dead to confirm the common Resurrection for all. Therefore, we carry the symbols of victory as did the youths, and we cry out to You, the victor over death, "Hosanna in the highest. Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord. " Kontakion in the Second Tone Christ, everyone's joy, the truth, the light, life, the resurrection of the world, has by His goodness appeared to those on earth. He is the archetype of the resurrection, granting divine forgiveness to all. Reading: Lazarus and his sisters Martha and Mary, the friends of the Lord Jesus, had given Him hospitality and served Him many times (Luke 10:38-4z; John 12:2-3). They were from Bethany, a village of Judea. This village is situated in the eastern parts by the foothills of the Mount of Olives, about two Roman miles from Jerusalem. When Lazarus - whose name is a Hellenized form of "Eleazar," which means "God has helped," became ill some days before the saving Passion, his sisters had this report taken to our Saviour, Who was then in Galilee. Nonetheless, He tarried yet two more days until Lazarus died; then He said to His disciples, "Let us go into Judea that I might awake My friend who sleepeth." By this, of course, He meant the deep sleep of death. On arriving at Bethany, He consoled the sisters of Lazarus, who was already four days dead. Jesus groaned in spirit and was troubled at the death of His beloved friend. He asked, "Where have ye laid his body?" and He wept over him. When He drew nigh to the tomb, He commanded that they remove the stone, and He lifted up His eyes, and giving thanks to God the Father, He cried out with a loud voice, "Lazarus, come forth." And he that had been dead four days came forth immediately, bound hand and foot with the grave clothes, and Jesus said to those standing there, "Loose him, and let him go." This is the supernatural wonder wrought by the Saviour that we celebrate on this day. According to an ancient tradition, it is said that Lazarus was thirty years old when the Lord raised him; then he lived another thirty years on Cyprus and there reposed in the Lord. It is furthermore related that after he was raised from the dead, he never laughed till the end of his life, but that once only, when he saw someone stealing a clay vessel, he smiled and said, "Clay stealing clay." His grave is situated in the city of Kition, having the inscription: "Lazarus the four days dead and friend of Christ." In 890 his sacred relics were transferred to Constantinople by Emperor Leo the Wise, at which time undoubtedly the Emperor composed his stichera for Vespers, "Wishing to behold the tomb of Lazarus..." Kontakion in the Fourth Tone Cultivated by God, you became manifest as an honorable tiller gathering for yourself the sheaves of virtue. For you sowed with tears but reaped with gladness; in the contest you competed with your blood and came away with Christ. By your intercessions, O Holy One, all are granted forgiveness of sins. Reading: George, this truly great and glorious Martyr of Christ, was born of a father from Cappadocia and a mother from Palestine. Being a military tribune, or chiliarch (that is, a commander of a thousand troops), he was illustrious in battle and highly honoured for his courage. When he learned that the Emperor Diocletian was preparing a persecution of the Christians, Saint George presented himself publicly before the Emperor and denounced him. When threats and promises could not move him from his steadfast confession, he was put to unheard-of tortures, which he endured with great bravery, overcoming them by his faith and love towards Christ. By the wondrous signs that took place in his contest, he guided many to the knowledge of the truth, including Queen Alexandra, wife of Diocletian, and was finally beheaded in 296 in Nicomedia. His sacred remains were taken by his servant from Nicomedia to Palestine, to a town called Lydda, the homeland of his mother, and then were finally transferred to the church which was raised up in his name. (The translation of the Saint's holy relics to the church in Lydda is commemorated on November 3; Saint Alexandra the Queen, on April 21.) 19 Ελληνικό Σχολείο ρ. Greek School Dr. Costas G. Fountzoulas PASCHA and EASTER These two words, Pascha and Easter mean the same thing, the largest Christian celebration, and the resurrection of our Lord and savior Jesus Christ. Let us see now why in Greek we use the word Pascha, while in English we use the word Easter. The word Pascha comes the Aramaic word pascha, which comes from the Hebrew word pesakh, which means passage, skipping passing over, the well known Passover. This word was used by the Jewish people in commemoration of the night of the Tenth Plague of Pharaoh, when the Angel of Death saw the blood of the Passover lamb on the doorposts of the houses of Israel and "skipped over" them and did not kill their firstborn. Therefore, the Christian Hellenes used the word Pascha to express the passing from death the life (resurrection). Christ is the Lamb of God, who saved us with his sacrifice (blood) from the sin and death. The modern English term Easter developed from the Old English word Eastre, which itself developed prior to 899. The name refers to the goddess Eastre in Germanic paganism, who was celebrated at the Spring equinox, and has cognates in Old High German ōstarūn, plural, Easter (modern German language Ostern). The Old English term Eastre ultimately derives from ēast - meaning the direction of east. This indicates it originally referred to a goddess associated with dawn. Corresponding Indo-European traditions occur with the Roman goddess Aurora and the Greek goddess Eos (Wikipedia). However, other people relate the word Easter with the festivities for the goddess Ishtar, which was the Babylonian Aphrodite. Our Dinner/Dance The Taverna, To Koutouki, which was organized by parents of the pupils of the Greek School, was very successful. The recipe for the success was consisted of the delicious food, the terrific folk and rembetiko live music and the performance of folk dances by our kids under the instruction and coordination of the Youth Director, Dino! HAPPY RESURRECTION AND HAPPY EASTER!
