Κ.Π. Καβάφης Θυμήσου, Σώμα Lucille Clifton Homage to My Hips 3. Yusef Komunyakaa Anodyne 4. Mark Strand Old Man Leaves Party 5. Theodore Roethke Epidermal Macabre Aristide Maillol Οι Τρείς Νύμφες ( )

του Κ. Π. Michelangelo Buonarroti David (1504)

Homage To My Hips της Lucille Clifton these hips are big hips. they need space to move around in. they don't fit into little petty places. these hips are free hips. they don't like to be held back. these hips have never been enslaved, they go where they want to go they do what they want to do. these hips are mighty hips. these hips are magic hips. i have known them to put a spell on a man and spin him like a top Σχόλιο: Σε αυτό το έργο της, η Lucille Clifton, αμερικανίδα ποιήτρια ( ), αναφέρεται στους γοφούς της. Pablo Picasso Blue Nude (1902)

Anodyne του Yusef Komunyakaa I love how it swells into a temple where it is held prisoner, where the god of blame resides. I love slopes & peaks, the secret paths that make me selfish. I love my crooked feet shaped by vanity & work shoes made to outlast belief. The hardness coupling milk it can't fashion. I love the lips, salt & honeycomb on the tongue. The hair holding off rain & snow. The white moons on my fingernails. I love how everything begs blood into song & prayer inside an egg. A ghost hums through my bones like Pan's midnight flute shaping internal laws beside a troubled river. I love this body made to weather the storm in the brain, raised out of the deep smell of fish & water hyacinth, out of rapture & the first regret. I love my big hands. I love it clear down to the soft quick motor of each breath, the liver's ten kinds of desire & the kidney's lust for sugar. This skin, this sac of dung & joy, this spleen floating like a compass needle inside nighttime, always divining West Africa's dusty horizon. I love the birthmark posed like a fighting cock on my right shoulder blade. I love this body, this

solo & ragtime jubilee behind the left nipple, because I know I was born to wear out at least one hundred angels. Old Man Leaves Party του Mark Strand It was clear when I left the party That though I was over eighty I still had A beautiful body. The moon shone down as it will On moments of deep introspection. The wind held its breath. And look, somebody left a mirror leaning against a tree. Making sure that I was alone, I took off my shirt. The flowers of bear grass nodded their moonwashed heads. I took off my pants and the magpies circled the redwoods. Down in the valley the creaking river was flowing once more. How strange that I should stand in the wilds alone with my body. I know what you are thinking. I was like you once. But now With so much before me, so many emerald trees, and Weed-whitened fields, mountains and lakes, how could I not Be only myself, this dream of flesh, from moment to moment?

Epidermal Macabre του Theodore Roethke Indelicate is he who loathes The aspect of his fleshy clothes, -- The flying fabric stitched on bone, The vesture of the skeleton, The garment neither fur nor hair, The cloak of evil and despair, The veil long violated by Caresses of the hand and eye. Yet such is my unseemliness: I hate my epidermal dress, The savage blood's obscenity, The rags of my anatomy, And willingly would I dispense With false accouterments of sense, To sleep immodestly, a most Incarnadine and carnal ghost. Walt Whitman I Sing the Body Electric 2. Allen Ginsberg Footnote to Howl 4.

I Sing The Body Electric του Walt Whitman 1 I sing the body electric, 2 The armies of those I love engirth me and I engirth them, 3 They will not let me off till I go with them, respond to them, 4 And discorrupt them, and charge them full with the charge of the soul. 5 Was it doubted that those who corrupt their own bodies conceal themselves? 6 And if those who defile the living are as bad as they who defile the dead? 7 And if the body does not do fully as much as the soul? 8 And if the body were not the soul, what is the soul? The love of the body of man or woman balks account, the body itself balks account, 10 That of the male is perfect, and that of the female is perfect. 11 The expression of the face balks account, 12 But the expression of a well-made man appears not only in his face, 13 It is in his limbs and joints also, it is curiously in the joints of his hips and wrists, 14 It is in his walk, the carriage of his neck, the flex of his waist and knees, dress does not hide him, 15 The strong sweet quality he has strikes through the cotton and broadcloth, 16 To see him pass conveys as much as the best poem, perhaps more, 17 You linger to see his back, and the back of his neck and shoulder-side. 18 The sprawl and fulness of babes, the bosoms and heads of women, the folds of their dress, their style as we pass in the street, the contour of their shape downwards, 19 The swimmer naked in the swimming-bath, seen as he swims through the transparent green-shine, or lies with his face up and rolls silently to and fro in the heave of the water, 20 The bending forward and backward of rowers in row-boats, the horseman in his saddle, 21 Girls, mothers, house-keepers, in all their performances, 22 The group of laborers seated at noon-time with their open dinner-kettles, and their wives waiting, 23 The female soothing a child, the farmer's daughter in the garden or cow-yard, 24 The young fellow hoeing corn, the sleigh-driver driving his six horses through the crowd, 25 The wrestle of wrestlers, two apprentice-boys, quite grown, lusty, good-natured, native-born, out on the vacant lot at sun-down after work, 26 The coats and caps thrown down, the embrace of love and resistance, 27 The upper-hold and under-hold, the hair rumpled over and blinding the eyes; 28 The march of firemen in their own costumes, the play of masculine muscle through clean-setting trowsers and waist-straps, 29 The slow return from the fire, the pause when the bell strikes suddenly again, and the listening on the alert, 30 The natural, perfect, varied attitudes, the bent head, the curv'd neck and the counting; 31 Such-like I love -- I loosen myself, pass freely, am at the mother's breast with the little child,

32 Swim with the swimmers, wrestle with wrestlers, march in line with the firemen, and pause, listen, count I knew a man, a common farmer, the father of five sons, 34 And in them the fathers of sons, and in them the fathers of sons. 35 This man was of wonderful vigor, calmness, beauty of person, 36 The shape of his head, the pale yellow and white of his hair and beard, the immeasurable meaning of his black eyes, the richness and breadth of his manners, 37 These I used to go and visit him to see, he was wise also, 38 He was six feet tall, he was over eighty years old, his sons were massive, clean, bearded, tan-faced, handsome, 39 They and his daughters loved him, all who saw him loved him, 40 Τhey did not love him by allowance, they loved him with personal love, 41 He drank water only, the blood show'd like scarlet through the clear-brown skin of his face, 42 He was a frequent gunner and fisher, he sail'd his boat himself, he had a fine one presented to him by a ship-joiner, he had fowling-pieces presented to him by men that loved him, 43 When he went with his five sons and many grand-sons to hunt or fish, you would pick him out as the most beautiful and vigorous of the gang, 44 You would wish long and long to be with him, you would wish to sit by him in the boat that you and he might touch each other I have perceiv'd that to be with those I like is enough, 46 To stop in company with the rest at evening is enough, 47 To be surrounded by beautiful, curious, breathing, laughing flesh is enough, 48 To pass among them or touch any one, or rest my arm ever so lightly round his or her neck for a moment, what is this then? 49 I do not ask any more delight, I swim in it as in a sea. 50 There is something in staying close to men and women and looking on them, and in the contact and odor of them, that pleases the soul well, 51 All things please the soul, but these please the soul well This is the female form, 53 A divine nimbus exhales from it from head to foot, 54 It attracts with fierce undeniable attraction, 55 I am drawn by its breath as if I were no more than a helpless vapor, all falls aside but myself and it, 56 Books, art, religion, time, the visible and solid earth, and what was expected of heaven or fear'd of hell, are now consumed, 57 Mad filaments, ungovernable shoots play out of it, the response likewise ungovernable,

58 Hair, bosom, hips, bend of legs, negligent falling hands all diffused, mine too diffused, 59 Ebb stung by the flow and flow stung by the ebb, love-flesh swelling and deliciously aching, 60 Limitless limpid jets of love hot and enormous, quivering jelly of love, white-blow and delirious juice, 61 Bridegroom night of love working surely and softly into the prostrate dawn, 62 Undulating into the willing and yielding day, 63 Lost in the cleave of the clasping and sweet-flesh'd day. 64 This the nucleus -- after the child is born of woman, man is born of woman, 65 This the bath of birth, this the merge of small and large, and the outlet again. 66 Be not ashamed women, your privilege encloses the rest, and is the exit of the rest, 67 You are the gates of the body, and you are the gates of the soul. 68 The female contains all qualities and tempers them, 69 She is in her place and moves with perfect balance, 70 She is all things duly veil'd, she is both passive and active, 71 She is to conceive daughters as well as sons, and sons as well as daughters. 72 As I see my soul reflected in Nature, 73 As I see through a mist, One with inexpressible completeness, sanity, beauty, 74 See the bent head and arms folded over the breast, the Female I see The male is not less the soul nor more, he too is in his place, 76 He too is all qualities, he is action and power, 77 The flush of the known universe is in him, 78 Scorn becomes him well, and appetite and defiance become him well, 79 The wildest largest passions, bliss that is utmost, sorrow that is utmost become him well, pride is for him, 80 The full-spread pride of man is calming and excellent to the soul, 81 Knowledge becomes him, he likes it always, he brings every thing to the test of himself, 82 Whatever the survey, whatever the sea and the sail he strikes soundings at last only here, 83 (Where else does he strike soundings except here?) 84 The man's body is sacred and the woman's body is sacred, 85 No matter who it is, it is sacred -- is it the meanest one in the laborers' gang? 86 Is it one of the dull-faced immigrants just landed on the wharf? 87 Each belongs here or anywhere just as much as the well-off, just as much as you, 88 Each has his or her place in the procession. 89 (All is a procession, 90 The universe is a procession with measured and perfect motion.) 91 Do you know so much yourself that you call the meanest ignorant? 92 Do you suppose you have a right to a good sight, and he or she has no right to a sight? 93 Do you think matter has cohered together from its diffuse float, and the soil is on the surface, and water runs and vegetation sprouts, 94 For you only, and not for him and her? 7

95 A man's body at auction, 96 (For before the war I often go to the slave-mart and watch the sale,) 97 I help the auctioneer, the sloven does not half know his business. 98 Gentlemen look on this wonder, 99 Whatever the bids of the bidders they cannot be high enough for it, 100 For it the globe lay preparing quintillions of years without one animal or plant, 101 For it the revolving cycles truly and steadily roll'd. 102 In this head the all-baffling brain, 103 In it and below it the makings of heroes. 104 Examine these limbs, red, black, or white, they are cunning in tendon and nerve, 105 They shall be stript that you may see them. 106 Exquisite senses, life-lit eyes, pluck, volition, 107 Flakes of breast-muscle, pliant backbone and neck, flesh not flabby, good-sized arms and legs, 108 And wonders within there yet. 109 Within there runs blood, 110 The same old blood! the same red-running blood! 111 There swells and jets a heart, there all passions, desires, reachings, aspirations, 112 (Do you think they are not there because they are not express'd in parlors and lecture-rooms?) 113 This is not only one man, this the father of those who shall be fathers in their turns, 114 In him the start of populous states and rich republics, 115 Of him countless immortal lives with countless embodiments and enjoyments. 116 How do you know who shall come from the offspring of his offspring through the centuries? 117 (Who might you find you have come from yourself, if you could trace back through the centuries?) A woman's body at auction, 119 She too is not only herself, she is the teeming mother of mothers, 120 She is the bearer of them that shall grow and be mates to the mothers. 121 Have you ever loved the body of a woman? 122 Have you ever loved the body of a man? 123 Do you not see that these are exactly the same to all in all nations and times all over the earth? 124 If any thing is sacred the human body is sacred, 125 And the glory and sweet of a man is the token of manhood untainted, 126 And in man or woman a clean, strong, firm-fibred body, is more beautiful than the most beautiful face. 127 Have you seen the fool that corrupted his own live body? or the fool that corrupted her own live body? 128 For they do not conceal themselves, and cannot conceal themselves. 9

129 O my body! I dare not desert the likes of you in other men and women, nor the likes of the parts of you, 130 I believe the likes of you are to stand or fall with the likes of the soul, (and that they are the soul,) 131 I believe the likes of you shall stand or fall with my poems, and that they are my poems, 132 Man's, woman's, child's, youth's, wife's, husband's, mother's, father's, young man's, young woman's poems, 133 Head, neck, hair, ears, drop and tympan of the ears, 134 Eyes, eye-fringes, iris of the eye, eyebrows, and the waking or sleeping of the lids, 135 Mouth, tongue, lips, teeth, roof of the mouth, jaws, and the jaw-hinges, 136 Nose, nostrils of the nose, and the partition, 137 Cheeks, temples, forehead, chin, throat, back of the neck, neck-slue, 138 Strong shoulders, manly beard, scapula, hind-shoulders, and the ample side-round of the chest, 139 Upper-arm, armpit, elbow-socket, lower-arm, arm-sinews, arm-bones, 140 Wrist and wrist-joints, hand, palm, knuckles, thumb, forefinger, finger-joints, finger-nails, 141 Broad breast-front, curling hair of the breast, breast-bone, breast-side, 142 Ribs, belly, backbone, joints of the backbone, 143 Hips, hip-sockets, hip-strength, inward and outward round, man-balls, man-root, 144 Strong set of thighs, well carrying the trunk above, 145 Leg fibres, knee, knee-pan, upper-leg, under-leg, 146 Ankles, instep, foot-ball, toes, toe-joints, the heel; 147 All attitudes, all the shapeliness, all the belongings of my or your body or of any one's body, male or female, 148 The lung-sponges, the stomach-sac, the bowels sweet and clean, 149 The brain in its folds inside the skull-frame, 150 Sympathies, heart-valves, palate-valves, sexuality, maternity, 151 Womanhood, and all that is a woman, and the man that comes from woman, 152 The womb, the teats, nipples, breast-milk, tears, laughter, weeping, love-looks, love-perturbations and risings, 153 The voice, articulation, language, whispering, shouting aloud, 154 Food, drink, pulse, digestion, sweat, sleep, walking, swimming, 155 Poise on the hips, leaping, reclining, embracing, arm-curving and tightening, 156 The continual changes of the flex of the mouth, and around the eyes, 157 The skin, the sunburnt shade, freckles, hair, 158 The curious sympathy one feels when feeling with the hand the naked meat of the body, 159 The circling rivers the breath, and breathing it in and out, 160 The beauty of the waist, and thence of the hips, and thence downward toward the knees, 161 The thin red jellies within you or within me, the bones and the marrow in the bones, 162 The exquisite realization of health; 163 O I say these are not the parts and poems of the body only, but of the soul, 164 O I say now these are the soul!

Roy Lichtenstein We rose up slowly

VII.

32 The Surgeon at 2 am της Sylvia Plath The white light is artificial, and hygienic as heaven. The microbes cannot survive it. They are departing in their transparent garments, turned aside From the scalpels and the rubber hands. The scalded sheet is a snowfield, frozen and peaceful. The body under it is in my hands. As usual there is no face. A lump of Chinese white With seven holes thumbed in. The soul is another light. I have not seen it; it does not fly up. Tonight it has receded like a ship's light. It is a garden I have to do with --- tubers and fruit Oozing their jammy substances, A mat of roots. My assistants hook them back. Stenches and colors assail me. This is the lung-tree. These orchids are splendid. They spot and coil like snakes. The heart is a red bell-bloom, in distress. I am so small In comparison to these organs! I worm and hack in a purple wilderness. The blood is a sunset. I admire it. I am up to my elbows in it, red and squeaking. Still is seeps me up, it is not exhausted. So magical! A hot spring I must seal off and let fill The intricate, blue piping under this pale marble. How I admire the Romans --- Aqeducts, the Baths of Caracella, the eagle nose! The body is a Roman thing. It has shut its mouth on the stone pill of repose. It is a statue the orderlies are wheeling off. I have perfected it. I am left with and arm or a leg, A set of teeth, or stones To rattle in a bottle and take home, And tissues in slices--a pathological salami. Tonight the parts are entombed in an icebox. Tomorrow they will swim In vinegar like saints' relics. Tomorrow the patient will have a clean, pink plastic limb.

Over one bed in the ward, a small blue light Announces a new soul. The bed is blue. Tonight, for this person, blue is a beautiful color. The angels of morphia have borne him up. He floats an inch from the ceiling, Smelling the dawn drafts. I walk among sleepers in gauze sarcophagi. The red night lights are flat moons. They are dull with blood. I am the sun, in my white coat, Grey faces, shuttered by drugs, follow me like flowers. H.R. Giger - Work Nr. 217 ELP II (Brain Salad Surgery) (1973)

Cancer Winter της Marilyn Hacker 1. At noon, an orderly wheeled me upstairs via an elevator hung with Season's Greetings streamers, bright and false as treason. The single room the surgeon let us share the night before the knife was scrubbed and bare except for blush-pink roses in a vase on the dresser. Veering through a morphine haze on the cranked bed, I was avidly aware of my own breathing, my thirst, that it was over the week that ended on this New Year's Eve. A known hand held, while I sipped, icewater, afloat between ache, sleep, lover and lover. The one who stayed would stay; the one would leave. The hand that held the cup next was my daughter's. 2. I woke up, and the surgeon said, "You're cured." Strapped to the gurney, in the cotton gown and pants I was wearing when they slid me down onto the table, made new straps secure while I stared at the hydra-headed O.R. lamp, I took in the tall, confident, brownskinned man, and the ache I couldn't quite call pain from where my right breast wasn't anymore to my armpit. A not-yet-talking head, I bit dry lips. What else could he have said? And then my love was there in a hospital coat; then my old love, still young and very scared. Then I, alone, graphed clock hands' asymptote to noon, when I would be wheeled back upstairs.

Facing It του Yusef Komunyakaa My black face fades, hiding inside the black granite. I said I wouldn t, dammit: No tears. I m stone. I m flesh. My clouded reflection eyes me like a bird of prey, the profile of night slanted against morning. I turn this way--the stone lets me go. I turn that way--i m inside the Vietnam Veterans Memorial again, depending on the light to make a difference. I go down the 58,022 names, half-expecting to find my own in letters like smoke. I touch the name Andrew Johnson; I see the booby trap s white flash. Names shimmer on a woman s blouse but when she walks away the names stay on the wall. Brushstrokes flash, a red bird s wings cutting across my stare. The sky. A plane in the sky. A white vet s image floats closer to me, then his pale eyes look through mine. I m a window. He s lost his right arm inside the stone. In the black mirror a woman s trying to erase names: No, she s brushing a boy s hair. Με τη φράση He s lost his arm/ inside the stone..
