Το ξενοδοχείο μας είχε από την έναρξη της λειτουργίας του αγαστή σχέση με την αρχιτεκτονική και το design και θα μπορούσαμε να πούμε πως ό,τι ξεκίνησε με τον σπουδαίο καλλιτέχνη Γιάννη Μόραλη και τα αρχιτεκτονικά του σχέδια για το Hilton Αθηνών στις αρχές της δεκαετίας του 60, τα οποία αυτές τις μέρες παρουσιάζονται σε μία εκπληκτική έκθεση στο Μουσείο Μπενάκη, συνεχίζεται τώρα με φιλόδοξες design παρεμβάσεις, όπως η ανακαίνιση του Galaxy Bar στον 13ο όροφο από το αρχιτεκτονικό γραφείο του πολυβραβευμένου Αλέξανδρου Τομπάζη. Την άνοιξη σύντομα θα διαδεχτεί το καλοκαίρι και μια νέα εποχή ξεγνοιασιάς και αισιοδοξίας θα πάρει τη σκυτάλη από τις σκοτούρες του χειμώνα που πέρασε. Η πόλη θα υποδεχτεί το θερμό ελληνικό καλοκαίρι στο αγαπημένο της ξενοδοχείο, όπου σιγά σιγά ετοιμάζονται τα τραπέζια του Galaxy Bar & Restaurant με θέα την Ακρόπολη και τον Λυκαβηττό και ανοίγουν οι μεγάλες ομπρέλες γύρω από την πισίνα και κάτω από τον καταγάλανο ελληνικό ουρανό. In tough times, when the consistency of our society and our sense of humanity are being challenged, the Hilton Athens and I, personally, recognize that now more than ever, we ought to let our solidarity s reflexes work for the benefit of our fellows in need. Ever since it was launched, our hotel has had a sublime relationship with architecture and design. This relationship begun with the great artist Yiannis Moralis and the architectural designs that he made for the Hilton Athens in the beginning of the 60s which, these days, are being presented in a spectacular exhibition in the Benaki Museum. The hotel s affiliation with architecture and design is now continued with ambitious design interventions, such as the refurbishment of the Galaxy Bar & Restaurant on the 13th floor, from the renowned architect Alexandros Tombazis and his office.the spring will soon be followed by summer and a new era of carelessness and optimism will substitute the troubles of the winter that just went by. The city is getting ready to welcome the warm Greek summer in its favorite hotel. 7 Yiannis Moralis Η έκθεση στο Μουσείο Μπενάκη με θέμα τις αρχιτεκτονικές του συνθέσεις και τη σφραγίδα του σε σπουδαία κτηρια της νεότερης Ελλάδας (ανάμεσά τους και το ξενοδοχείο Hilton) έρχεται να αναδείξει μια ακόμη πτυχή ενός σπουδαίου καλλιτέχνη. Από τον Γιώργο Μητρόπουλο The exhibition hosted by the Benaki Museum, which has his architectural compositions and his contribution to several modern Greek important buildings (the Hilton hotel among them) as a theme, is here to highlight one more aspect of the renowned artist. By Yiorgos Mitropoulos Ο Γιάννης Μόραλης ( ) ανήκει στους επιφανέστερους Έλληνες καλλιτέχνες του 20ου αιώνα, επηρεάζοντας για δεκαετίες την πορεία της εγχώριας εικαστικής παραγωγής. Από το 1932 όταν εξέθεσε για πρώτη φορά έργα του στην Ανωτάτη Σχολή Καλών Τεχνών, αποσπώντας ενθουσιώδεις κριτικές και για 77 συναπτά έτη, μέχρι το θάνατό του, κατάφερε να βρίσκεται διαρκώς στην πρωτοπορία, ανανεώνοντας όχι μόνο το δικό του εικαστικό σύμπαν, αλλά και το ελληνικό καλλιτεχνικό γίγνεσθαι. Το στέρεό του σύστημα, που παντρεύει το καθημερινό με το μυθικό και το οικείο, την παράδοση με την πρωτοπορία και τις αισθητικές αξίες με τις ηθικές αξίες βρήκε δίοδο έκφρασης κυρίως μέσα από τη ζωγραφική. Ο καλλιτέχνης όμως δεν περιορίστηκε μόνο σ αυτόν το χώρο: πειραματίστηκε με τη χαρακτική, τη γλυπτική, τη σκηνογραφία αλλά και τις αρχιτεκτονικές συνθέσεις. Ακριβώς αυτό το τελευταίο κομμάτι, τη σχέση του δηλαδή με την αρχιτεκτονική, έρχεται να υπενθυμίσει η έκθεση που φιλοξενεί το Μουσείο Μπενάκη στις κεντρικές εγκαταστάσεις του. Τα πρώτα σημάδια αυτής της σχέσης, που θα γίνει στη συνέχεια αγάπη και προέκταση της δουλειάς του διαμορφώθηκαν κατά τη διάρκεια των σπουδών του στο Παρίσι ( ) στην École des Arts et Métiers. Λίγο πριν από το θάνατό του το 2009, ο Γιάννης Μόραλης παραχώρησε στο Μουσείο Μπενάκη 120 έργα του, μακέτες και προσχέδια των αρχιτεκτονικών συνθέσεων που φύλασσε στο εργαστήριό του. Ήταν λοιπόν χρέος του Μουσείου απέναντι στον μεγάλο δημιουργό αυτή η έκθεση, που εκτός από Yiannis Moralis ( ) is one of the most eminent Greek artists of the 20th century. For decades he has been influencing the course of the domestic artistic production. Since 1932, when he exhibited his work for the first time in the Athens School of Fine Arts receiving excellent reviews, and for 77 consecutive years, until his death, he managed to constantly have the lead, restoring not only his own conjectural universe, but also the entire Greek artistic scene. His solid technique, which blends the daily with the mythical, the familiar/ traditional with the innovative, and the aesthetic values with the moral values, has mostly found a channel for expression through his paintings. And yet, the artist did not restrict himself to this field: he experimented with engraving, sculpture, stage design and architectural compositions. This latter aspect, that is his relationship with architecture, is the theme of the exhibition hosted in the central facilities of the Benaki Museum. His first contact with architecture, which later on became so dear to him, occurred in Paris while he was studying at the École des Arts et Métiers ( ). A little before his death in 2009, Yiannis Moralis accorded the Benaki Museum 120 of his works, mock-ups and drafts of the architectural compositions that he kept in his studio. The museum, therefore, owed this exhibition to the great creator. Την επιστημονική επιμέλειά της ανέλαβε η Φανή-Μαρία Τσιγκάκου, ενώ την ευρηματική παρουσίασή της, η σκηνογράφος Λίλη Πεζανού. Η περίπτωση του ξενοδοχείου Χίλτον Αφετηρία αλλά και κορωνίδα των εικαστικών παρεμβάσεων του Γιάννη Μόραλη σε δημόσια κτήρια ήταν το ξενοδοχείο Χίλτον. Οι συνθέσεις και τα σχέδια γι αυτό το κορυφαίο έργο κατέχουν κεντρική θέση στην έκθεση, σκιαγραφώντας όχι μόνο την πορεία εκτέλεσης, αλλά τη μέθοδο σκέψης και σύλληψης αυτής της τεράστιας εγχάρακτης επιφάνειας στην πρόσοψη αλλά και στην πίσω πλευρά του ξενοδοχείου. Η παρέμβαση αυτή έγινε το 1959 και άφησε εποχή, καθώς δημιούργησε ένα σημείο αναφοράς στον αστικό ιστό της πόλης. Κανένας σύγχρονος καλλιτέχνης δεν είχε κληθεί ως τότε να «καλύψει» 640 τετραγωνικά μέτρα επιφάνειας. Το τι ακριβώς περιλαμβάνει η σύνθεση περιγράφεται εξαιρετικά από τον ίδιο τον δημιουργό: «Oι Αμερικανοί ήθελαν το θέμα να έχει σχέση με την αρχαία Ελλάδα. Καθώς το θέμα ήταν υποχρεωτικό, δηλαδή παραστάσεις από την αρχαία Ελλάδα, προσπάθησα να αποφύγω να κάνω αντίγραφα από συγκεκριμένα έργα. Βέβαια, η σύνθεσή μου είναι εμπνευσμένη από την αρχαία Ελλάδα, αλλά δεν υπάρχει ούτε ένα μοτίβο που να είναι απ ευθείας αντίγραφο, π.χ. πουθενά δεν υπάρχει μαίανδρος. Μεταχειρίστηκα ένα βασικό σχήμα: μία σπείρα, σαν ένα σαλιγκάρι. Από κει προκύπτει ένας κύκλος, ελλείψεις, τμήματα ελλείψεων. Το ίδιο αρχικό μοτίβο γίνεται ένα θυμιατήρι πάνω στο βωμό (δίπλα του η ελιά), η ίδια σπείρα γίνεται και τα μαλλιά των γυναικών. Πολύ απλά, καθαρά σχήματα. Μετά, καμπύλες δηλαδή τμήματα κύκλων. Στο τέλος άρχισα να διαχωρίζω τις γυναικείες φιγούρες ξανθές και μελαχρινές (δηλαδή λιγότερο σκούρες). Επάνω, δεξιά, οι δύο κεραίες είναι ο ήλιος, η αρχή. Από τον ήλιο σχηματίζονται όλα: η γραμμή του αετώματος, πάνω στο αέτωμα η Γλαυξ, αριστερά το χέρι της Αθηνάς που κρατάει τη Νίκη. Κατεβαίνουμε παρακάτω: αριστερά, η Αθηνά με την ασπίδα της. Δίπλα στην ασπίδα, ο βωμός και οι Κανηφόρες, δηλαδή η προσφορά προς τον ξένο. Παρακάτω, οι Αυλητρίδες, δηλαδή η διασκέδαση. Κάτω, είναι το άρμα που συμβολίζει το ταξίδι, όπως και η τριήρης παρακάτω. Αυτή είναι όλη η ιστορία! Είναι πάρα πολύ απλό και επιπλέον δεν υπάρχει πουθενά κάποιο στοιχείο που να είναι αντίγραφο από αρχαίο μοτίβο. Για την πίσω όψη επί της Μιχαλακοπούλου, σχεδίασα τρία μοτίβα: είναι απλά γεωμετρικά σχέδια που επαναλαμβάνονται, μεγαλώνοντας προς τα πάνω για να μην υπάρχει φυγή». of architectural work. Fani-Maria Tsigkakou is the exhibition s scientific editor, and Lili Pezanou is in charge of its creative presentation. The case of the Hilton Athens The Hilton hotel was a starting point but also a cornice for Yiannis Moralis conceptual interventions in public buildings. The compositions and designs for this top-ranking piece of work occupy the main bulk of the exhibition, outlining not only the process of completion of this huge engraved surfaces at the front and back of the hotel, but also the thought and conception procedures which led to it. This intervention took place in 1959 and became a trademark, since it created a point of reference for the city s urban tissue. No contemporary artist has been asked since then to «cover» 640 square meters of surface. The exact content of the exhibition is ideally described by the creator himself: «The Americans wanted the theme to be related to ancient Greece. Since the theme was already set, and it required scenes from ancient Greece, I tried to avoid copying certain works of art. Of course, my composition is inspired by ancient Greece, but there isn t a single motif that has been copied, eg. there aren t any meanders. I have dealt with a basic shape: a coil, which resembles a snail. A circle, an ellipse and ellipses segments arise from that circle. The same initial motif becomes the censer on the altar (with the olive tree next to it), and the coil itself becomes the women s hair. Very simple, clear shapes. And then we have curves, that is circles fragments. In the end I started separating the female figures into blondes and brunettes (that is less dark). At the top right corner is the sun, the beginning. The sun is what creates everything: the pediment s line, the Owl on the pediment, on the left Athena s hand holding Nike. Going down: on the left, Athena with her shield. Next to the shield, the altar and the canister carriers (Kanifores), that is the offer to the stranger. Further down, the Avlitrides, that is «the entertainment». At the bottom is the chariot which symbolizes the voyage, like the trireme beneath it. This is the whole story! The piece is very simple, and there isn t a single element copying an ancient motif. For the back face of the hotel which overlooks Michalakopoulou street, I designed three motifs: they are simple geometrical shapes that are repeated, growing in size as we move upwards so that there s no escape». Ο Γιάννης Μόραλης δημιούργησε προτάσεις για διαμορφώσεις ξενοδοχείων(αστήρ-βουλιαγμένη, Μον Παρνές-Πάρνηθα, Ξενία-Φλώρινα, Αμαλία-Δελφοί, Mediterranean Palace-Θεσσαλονίκη, Grand Hotel-Ρόδος), τραπεζών (Τράπεζα της Ελλάδος, Εθνική Τράπεζα, Τράπεζα Πειραιώς, Citibank), δημοσίων κτηρίων (Πάντειος, Δημαρχείο Αθηνών, Υπόστεγα Ο.Λ.Π., Εστιατόριο Διόνυσος- Φιλοπάππου, Αττικό Μετρό-Σταθμός Πανεπιστήμιο), ενώ αρκετές συνθέσεις του προορίζονταν για ιδιωτικές κατοικίες (Χατζιδάκι, Τσεκένη, Καμπάνη, Δοξιάδη, Ζολώτα, Γουλανδρή, Λύρα, Αγγελόπουλου). Αυτό που τον ενδιέφερε πάντα είναι η οργανική σχέση της σύνθεσης με την ταυτότητα του κτηρίου και τη συγκεκριμένη τοποθεσία και ταυτόχρονα ο διάλογος με τον περιβάλλοντα χώρο και το φως. Τα στοιχεία της ζωγραφικής του προβάλλονται έντονα και στις αρχιτεκτονικές του προτάσεις, επιβεβαιώνοντας την έμμονη αναζήτησή του, στοιχειοθετώντας μια αναμφίβολη συνέπεια στις διαδοχικές φάσεις της δουλειάς του και δημιουργώντας παράλληλα ένα ολοκληρωμένο αρχιτεκτονικό λεξιλόγιο: άρτια οργανωμένοι όγκοι, γεωμετρικές επιφάνειες, αφαιρετικές συνθέσεις, ραφιναρισμένες γραμμές που στηρίζονται στη λιτότητα και σε έναν εσωτερικό ρυθμό. Ο φίλος του Οδυσσέας Ελύτης το είχε επισημάνει μοναδικά: «Με ένα ολιγοψήφιο αλφάβητο στα χέρια του [ ], επέτυχε ο Μόραλης να μετατρέψει την ομιλία των πραγμάτων σε οπτικό φαινόμενο, κατά τρόπο μοναδικό μέσα στη σύγχρονη ελληνική τέχνη» και συμπληρώνει αναφέροντας ότι το κύριο χαρακτηριστικό της δουλειάς του είναι «μια νοσταλγία του μνημειακού, που παρωθούσε ανέκαθεν το χέρι του ζωγράφου να οργανώνει και να ισορροπεί τις φόρμες του πάνω σε ένα νοητό αρχιτεκτόνημα». _ Η έκθεση «Γιάννης Μόραλης: Αρχιτεκτονικές Συνθέσεις» στο Μουσείο Μπενάκη θα διαρκέσει μέχρι τις 30 Απριλίου. What has always interested him is the functional relationship of the composition with the building s identity and the particular location and, at the same time, the dialogue with the surrounding space and light. Elements from his paintings that also often come up in his architectural proposals, confirming his persistent quest, and proving the indisputable consistency which characterizes the successive phases of his work and, at the same time, creating an integral architectural dictionary include: perfectly organized volumes, geometrical surfaces, abstract compositions, refined lines which are based on simplicity and an internal rhythm. His friend Odysseas Elitis has uniquely pinpointed it: «Having as his tool an alphabet with few digits [ ], Moralis has achieved in converting the objects speech into an optical phenomenon, in a way that is unique in contemporary Greek art». He adds that the main attribute of his work is «a nostalgia for the monumental, which has always prompted the painter to organize and balance his forms on an imaginable architectural creation». _ The exhibition «Yiannis Moralis:Architectural Compositions» in the Benaki Museum will last until April 30th. Τη δύναμη που της δίνει η εξέλιξη της καριέρας της, φαίνεται να τη χρησιμοποιεί για καλό. Τι αναμνήσεις σου ξύπνησε η φωτογράφηση για το Ducks for Change; Tους ομηρικούς καυγάδες με τους γονείς μου όταν ήμουν μικρή σχετικά με το ποια αντικείμενα μπορούσα να πάρω μαζί μου στην μπανιέρα σαν παιχνίδι. Προφανώς υπήρχαν παπάκια και καραβάκια, αλλά θυμάμαι έντονα πως για κάποιο μυστήριο λόγο επέμενα ότι πρέπει να παίξω και με το τηλέφωνο, το ρολόι του μπαμπά μου ή το walkman της αδερφής μου. Και επειδή δεν με άφηναν (λογικό), χαλούσα τον κόσμο. Γιατί αποφάσισες να συμμετέχεις; Γιατί δεν μπορώ να σκεφτώ ούτε ένα λόγο στον κόσμο για να αρνηθώ. Δεν υπάρχει τίποτα πιο ωραίο από το να ξέρεις ότι μπορείς να βοηθήσεις έστω και λίγο σε μια ενέργεια τόσο σπουδαία, διαθέτοντας απλά λίγο από το χρόνο σου. Yes, the epic fights that I used to have with my parents when I was little, about what objects I could take with me in the bathtub to play with. Of course I had my little plastic ducks and boats, but I vividly remember that, for some reason, I insisted on playing with the telephone, my dad s watch or my sister s walkman. And, since they wouldn t let me (why would they?) I just wouldn t let go. How did you decide to participate? Because I couldn t think of a single reason not to. There s nothing more satisfying than knowing that you can contribute (even in the slightest bit) in such an important action, just by sacrificing a little bit of your time. Ποιος θα ήθελες να ανοίξει την πόρτα και να μπει μέσα; Επειδή ταξιδεύω αρκετά με τη δουλειά μου, έχω βρεθεί πολλές φορές σε ωραία δωμάτια ξενοδοχείων, τα οποία νιώθω ότι δεν μπορώ να ευχαριστηθώ, αφού σε αυτά τα ταξίδια είμαι πάντα μόνη μου. Θα ήθελα λοιπόν μία φορά να ανοίξει η πόρτα και να μπει όλη μου η παρέα και να δει τι θα πάθει το δωμάτιο (με την καλή έννοια). Ως αρχισυντάκτρια του Cosmopolitan ασχολείσαι με τις σχέσεις ανδρών και γυναικών. Ποιο είναι το βασικότερο θέμα ασυνεννοησίας μεταξύ μας; Πιστεύω ότι τα δύο φύλα έχουμε τόσο μα τόσο διαφορετικό τρόπο σκέψης που όταν διαπραγματευόμαστε είναι σαν να προσπαθούμε να λύσουμε μια μαθηματική εξίσωση, μιλώντας ο ένας φινλανδικά και ο άλλος πορτογαλικά. Το facebook έχει επαναπροσδιορίσει τις σχέσεις μας με τους άνδρες; Το facebook συνοψίζει όλα τα χαρακτηριστικά του φλερτ, της σχέσης, του χωρισμού, ακόμη και του γάμου, στην πληρέστερη διαδικτυακή εφαρμογή τους. Εκεί που παλιά ζήλευες αν ο φίλος σου μιλούσε σε μια άλλη σε ένα μπαρ, τώρα ζηλεύεις αν της κάνει like σε μια φωτογραφία της κ.ο.κ. Τι μπορεί να σε κάνει έξαλλη στη συμπεριφορά των άλλων? Εκνευρίζομαι πολύ δύσκολα. Ένα από τα λίγα που μου έρχεται τώρα στο μυαλό είναι το να φέρεται κάποιος άσχημα σε κάποιον άλλο λόγω θέσης. Ποιο είναι το καλύτερο ψέμα που σου έχουν πει; «Σ αγαπώ». Τι πιστεύεις ότι βρίσκουν γοητευτικό οι άλλοι σε σένα; Χμ... λέω ωραία ανέκδοτα; Αυτή την εποχή που δεν ασχολείσαι με την τηλεόραση σου λείπει; Δεν το περίμενα αλλά ναι! Γι αυτό και λέω να δοκιμάσω κάτι ακόμα. Ελπίζω να τα καταφέρω. Ποιο ήταν το χειρότερο πράγμα της περιόδου «Just the two of us»; Πριν την πρεμιέρα. Είχα φοβερό άγχος και έσβηνα μέρες σαν θανατοποινίτης. Και το καλύτερο; Όταν πια ξεκίνησε η εκπομπή και είδα ότι επιβίωσα, κάθε Κυριακή το διασκέδαζα όλο και περισσότερο. Πες μου ένα αστείο περιστατικό με κάποιον που σε αναγνώρισε στο δρόμο. Do you believe that facebook has redefined our relationship with men? Facebook summarizes all the attributes of flirting, relationships, break-ups, even marriage, in their most complete virtual practice. While a few years ago you were jealous if your boyfriend was speaking to another girl at a bar, now you are jealous if he likes her photo etc. Is there anything that can drive you nuts in the behavior of others? I very rarely lose my temper. Something that I may find infuriating is when people take advantage of their status and use it to behave nastily. What is the best lie that someone has ever told you? I love you. What do you think is your most charming quality? Hmm I tell funny jokes? At this moment you re not working in television. Do you miss it? Although I wasn t expecting it, I do! That s why I m thinking about trying out something new. I hope I can make it. Which was the worst thing about the show Just the two of us? The week before the premiere. I was extremely nervous and felt as if I were sentenced to death. And the best? When the show finally begun and I realized that I had survived, every Sunday I had more and more fun. Tell me something funny about someone who recognized you in the street. The funniest incidents occur when people around their 40s-50s recognize me. Most often, they are certain that I am their children s classmate or friend and, after they ve chatted with me for quite a while, in the middle of the conversation they realize where they know me from and we burst out laughing. Which movie would you like to experience in real life? Some silly romantic comedy with a happy ending. If your life was to become a movie, whom would you like to impersonate you? Juliette Lewis. Since the question is hypothetical, I could choose someone more beautiful, but I think that she could really nail the part. If you were to be reborn, who would you like to return as? Myself. I grew up in a beautiful and crazy family and I have wonderful friends. Ο τελευταίος επιλέγει να φωτογραφίσει βιομηχανικά κτήρια και αφαιρώντας τις λεπτομέρειες που προσδιορίζουν το τοπίο, μας αφήνει με την αίσθηση μιας αδρής αρχιτεκτονικής φόρμας. Παρόμοια και η τεχνική στα έργα της Lisa Ruyters που μετατρέπει καθημερινές φωτογραφίες από συναθροίσεις ανθρώπων σε αφηρημένους πίνακες. Πιο ρομαντικές οι φωτογραφίες της Josephine Pryde. Λίγο θολές και μελαγχολικές, με αισθητική 19ου αιώνα, είναι σαν αιχμηρή κριτική στην σύγχρονη, ωμά ειλικρινή και με εμμονή στην ακρίβεια τέχνη της φωτογραφίας. Αντίθετα, συναισθηματικά ουδέτερη θα μπορούσε να χαρακτηριστεί η οπτική του Eric Poitevin που απαλλάσσει τοπία, πορτρέτα και γυμνά από κάθε μορφής έκφραση, εξαναγκάζοντας ένα σιωπηλό διάλογο με το θεατή. Και τα σώματα των ζευγαριών που απαθανατίζει με τη μηχανή της η Lina Bertucci διαλέγονται σε μια κίνηση γεμάτη ένταση που πάλλεται ανάμεσα σε ερωτική συνεύρεση και μάχη, ανάμεσα σε ένστικτο και νόηση. Η Vibeke Tandberg χρησιμοποίει τον ίδιο της τον εαυτό για να μελετήσει τη ψυχοκοινωνική σχέση με τον κόσμο που την περιβάλει, την ώρα που τα πορτραίτα του Seydou Keita εγείρουν εντελώς διαφορετικά ερωτήματα πολιτισμικής ετερότητας απεικονίζοντας συγγενείς και συγχωριανούς τους στο Μάλι. He relieves landscapes, portraits and nudes from all kinds of expression, imposing a silent dialogue with the spectator. The couples bodies that Lina Bertucci immortalizes with her camera are depicted in an intense motion which palpitates between erotic affair and fight, between instinct and intellect. Vibeke Tandberg uses her own self to study the psychosocial relation with her surrounding world, while Seydou Keita s portraits raise totally different issues of cultural variation, depicting families and their fellow villagers in Mali. The exhibition is completed with a sculpture by the German Olav Westphalen. With an ironic disposition, she touches the issue of the perpetual battle between nature and civilization, and the acceptance that the savage element shall never be totally suppressed. _ 26 hilton athens

Είσαι ο πιο εμπορικός Έλληνας μουσικός. Πόσο σε νοιάζει αυτό; Δυστυχώς ή ευτυχώς τα νούμερα μετράνε. Η άξια σου σε ένα χώρο σαν της μουσικής είναι σαν χρηματιστήριο. Όταν η μετοχή σου είναι ψηλά, νιώθεις καλά και αντίστοιχα όταν πέφτεις δεν είναι και το καλύτερο. Εσένα σε έχει επηρεάσει η κρίση; Την καταλαβαίνω απόλυτα από τα νούμερα της πώλησης των δίσκων και το πώς αντιδρά η νύχτα. Η κρίση τη μουσική τη χτύπησε πολύ γιατί είχαμε ήδη προβλήματα με την πειρατεία και το κακό ρεπερτόριο, τις κακοτεχνίες. Εγώ έβγαλα πολύ λιγότερα λεφτά φέτος από ότι πέρυσι, αλλά μη με λυπάσαι. Τα τραγούδια σου γιατί είναι τα περισσότερα μελαγχολικά; Είναι χαζό να τραγουδάμε χαρούμενα τραγούδια. Τι είμαστε, τρελή παρέα ή νηπιαγωγείο; Τα τραγούδια έχουν νόημα όταν έχουν μελαγχολία. Τρεφόμαστε από τη θλίψη μας μερικές φορές. Η αυτοκαταστροφή μας μάς αρέσει, οδηγούμαστε εκεί και το τραγούδι το περιγράφει αυτό πολύ καλά. Νομίζω ότι μελαγχολικοί είμαστε όλοι σε ένα βαθμό. Δεν έχω δει και κανένα να είναι σε τρελή χαρά. Το δράμα βέβαια θέλει μεγάλη τέχνη και ταλέντο για να το πετύχεις. You become competitive when there is competition around you HE IS ONE OF THE MOST FAMOUS POP STARS in Greece but he never ceases to aim at the top and always tries hard to be perfect -whatever that means. You are the most popular Greek musician. How much do you care about that? For better or for worse, numbers matter. In a field such like the music industry, what you re worth is like the stock exchange. When your stock is high, you feel good and when your stock falls, you don t feel that good. Has the crisis influenced you? It affects me as far as my album sales and the nightlife scene are concerned. The crisis has been very harmful for the music industry, which already had to deal with piracy, bad repertory, bungling. This year I made much less money than last year, but don t feel bad for me. Most of your songs are melancholic. Why? It s stupid to be singing happy songs. What are we, a group of crazy people, or a kindergarten? Songs mean something when they give out melancholy. Sometimes we are fed by our grief. We like our self-destruction, we lead ourselves to it, and the songs perfectly describe that. I think that, up to a point, we are all melancholic. It s not like I ve seen anyone jump with joy. Of course, drama needs great artistry and talent in order to be conveyed. Have you noticed any copying of your musical style? The copying phenomenon is there, but it doesn t work because the people can t absorb something, once they ve heard its original version. It s like buying a pair of Ray-Bans in Omonoia. Have you ever thought about writing music for others? I might do it as an exception, but I don t think that I would enjoy it. I would be describing my own life and needs and that would be a problem. Are you competitive with your colleagues? You become competitive when you believe that there is competition around you. I don t think that I am. If you are collaborating, you have to promote yourself, without harming the others. I want to be good at what I do, I actually want to be one of the best, and I pursue it, without though caring about the people around me. I take care of my own business, because I have my own course to follow. If you come across the new Chatzigiannis, will you help him? I don t think that our field allows for such magnanimities. However, it would in a way bring my credits up. Would you be the judge in a talent show? I can t judge people openly. I m afraid that I will be saying mean things all the time, and that they will think that I m doing it on purpose. You would be the bad one then, like Theofanous. Είναι σαν να αγοράζει Ray-Ban από την Ομόνοια. Έχεις σκεφτεί στο μέλλον να γράφεις και για άλλους; Μπορεί να το κάνω κατ εξαίρεση αλλά δε νομίζω ότι μ αρέσει. Περιγράφω τη ζωή μου και τις δικές μου ανάγκες και προβλήματα, οπότε θα ήταν περίεργο. Με τους συναδέρφους σου είσαι ανταγωνιστικός; Ανταγωνιστικός γίνεσαι όταν θεωρείς ότι υπάρχει ανταγωνισμός. Δε νομίζω ότι είμαι. Αν συνεργάζεσαι, πρέπει να δείξεις αυτό που είσαι χωρίς να ρίξεις τον άλλο. Θέλω να είμαι καλός και στην πρώτη γραμμή και το επιδιώκω αλλά δεν κοιτάζω τους γύρω μου. Κοιτώ αυτό που κάνω γιατί έχω ένα δρόμο δικό μου. Αν δεις τον νέο Χατζηγιάννη θα τον βοηθήσεις; Δε νομίζω ότι επιτρέπει τέτοιες μεγαλοψυχίες ο χώρος μας. Υπό μία έννοια όμως θα ανέβαζε και λίγο τον πήχη. Σε μουσικό talent show θα έκανες τον κριτή; Δεν μπορώ να κρίνω ανθρώπους ανοιχτά. Φοβάμαι ότι θα λέω κακίες συνέχεια και θα νομίζουν ότι το κάνω επίτηδες. Θα είχες το προφίλ του κακού δηλαδή όπως ο Θεοφάνους; Ο Θεοφάνους έχει πολύ καλή μουσική άποψη. Τα άσχημα πράγματα δεν μπορούν να ειπωθούν με καλό τρόπο. Ας μιλήσει και κάποιος λίγο πιο ξεκάθαρα. Πιστεύεις ότι βοηθάνε κανέναν πραγματικά αυτά τα σόου; Βοηθάνε κάποιους που δεν θα έβλεπαν ποτέ φως στο τούνελ, αλλά αυτό δεν λέει και τίποτα. Ο καθένας μπορεί να είναι διάσημος για 4 μήνες. Το θέμα είναι να αντέξεις. Το λογικό είναι να γίνεις γνωστός επειδή είσαι καλός. Αυτοί γίνονται διάσημοι επειδή απλά τους ξέρεις. Δεν έχουν δισκογραφία, ξέρεις ότι είναι τραγουδιστές αλλά δεν ξέρεις τραγούδια τους. Πρέπει μετά να εναρμονιστούν με την ιδιότητά τους. Δεν έχω τρελαθεί με κάποιον που έχω δει εκεί. Έχουν πάρει τα μυαλά σου αέρα με την επιτυχία; Ενθουσιάζομαι με τη δουλειά μου, όχι με τη δημοσιότητα. Εξάλλου εγώ τραγουδάω από τα 15 μου, ο πρώτος μου δίσκος ήταν στην Α λυκείου και εκεί που είχα μια κοπέλα μετά είχα 15. Τα πέρασα αυτά. Μικρός την είδα, την άκουσα, πήγαινα σχολείο ό,τι ώρα ήθελα, έφευγα όποτε ήθελα. Βέβαια λογικό είναι να είσαι γνωστός. Τραγουδιστής και να μην σε ξέρουν είναι λάθος. Αν αύριο σε ξεχάσουν δεν θα σε πειράξει; Δεν με πειράζει αυτό αλλά δεν θέλω να χάσω την ικανότητα μου να τραγουδάω και να γράφω. Αυτό θα με πειράξει γεμάτα χρόνια πορείας είναι αρκετά χορταστικά. Βέβαια δεν θες να τα χάσεις κιόλας. Τι θες να λένε για σένα στο μέλλον; Η υστεροφημία δεν με απασχολεί καθόλου. Είναι ματαιοδοξία. Με ενδιαφέρει σε κάθε εποχή να υπάρχω και να ακούγομαι σαν καινούργιος. Οι περισσότεροι τραγουδιστές επαναπαύονται στα παλιά τους, σαν να έχουν αποκοπεί. Είναι δύσκολο να ανήκεις σε κάθε εποχή όπως ο Jagger και οι U2, αλλά είναι μία προκληση. Δεν θες να είσαι στα 50 και να λες εγώ στα 20 ήμουν ο καλύτερος. Και τι έγινε; Κάνεις δεν θυμάται το παρελθόν σου. Δεν θες να λένε δηλαδή ο μεγάλος Έλληνας καλλιτέχνης Χατζηγιάννης; Μου κάνεις λίγο παλιό αυτό. Τι νόημα έχει αν δεν είσαι φρέσκος σε κάθε εποχή; Αυτό δεν είναι λίγο ματαιόδοξο; Είναι και ματαιόδοξο, αλλά ο πρωταθλητισμός στη μουσική το χρειάζεται. Είναι εγωιστικό γιατί θέλεις να είσαι πάντα στους πρώτους, θες πάντα να αρέσεις, δεν θες να μεγαλώνεις, θέλεις να είσαι πάντα 25 και να σκίζουν τα ρούχα τους από κάτω τα πιτσιρίκια. Αν είσαι επιτυχημένος και το έχεις βιώσει, δεν θες να το χάσεις. Το θες και το διεκδικείς και το προσέχεις πολύ και θες να κρατήσεις. Στα 50 μου θα βρω άλλους τρόπους να επικοινωνώ με τον κόσμο. Δεν μπορεί ένας 50αρης να κάνει ποπ και να χοροπηδάει. _ Ανταγωνιστικός γίνεσαι όταν γύρω σου υπάρχει ανταγωνισμός Do you think that these shows can really help someone? They help those who, if it weren t for the talent shows, wouldn t stand a chance of getting anywhere, but this doesn t really say much. Everyone can become famous for 4 months. What matters is how long one can last. What makes sense is to become famous because you are good. These people become popular because the people know them. They don t have a discography, you know that they are singers but you don t know any of their songs. And then they have to become attuned with their status. None of the people whom I have seen in the talent shows has fascinated me. Has your success made you arrogant? I love my work, but not necessarily the popularity. Besides, I ve been singing since I was 15, when my first album was issued, in my first year of high school, the chicks started throwing themselves at me. I ve been there, I ve done that. When I was young, I let the popularity influence me, I bragged, I was arrogant, I want to school when I wanted and left when I wanted. Of course, the natural thing is to be famous. Being a singer and people not knowing you is wrong. If tomorrow people forget you, will that matter to you? I don t mind losing that, but I mind losing my ability to sing and compose. This will matter to me. 15 years of a busy career are quite fulfilling. Of course you don t want to lose them. What would you like the people to say about you in the future? I m not at all bothered about posthumous fame. It s vain. I would like it if people still listened to my music as if I were new. Most singers content themselves with their old hits, as if they ve been cut off. It s difficult to belong to every era, like Jagger or the U2 so, but it is a challenge. You don t want to turn 50 and be saying that you used to be the best when you were 20. And so what? No-one remembers your past.
