These include very impressive academic achievements as well as a wide range of extra curricular activities, which of course are a very important part of school life. In this edition of the Pascal Chronicle you will find many educative, encouraging, challenging and entertaining articles which reflect the hard work and effort of our pupils. I would like to express my gratitude to all the contributors who made the magazine possible, to Mr. Andreas L. Andreou for his contribution to the photography and to Mrs Chrystalla Constantinou for the proof reading. My special thanks go to Mrs Maria Vasiliou, Mrs Anastasia Pittaki and Mrs Mary Vrahimi who have worked extremely hard in the production of this magazine. 2

2010- Message from the Director, Mr Alexis Andreou Welcome to the 2010/11 electronic edition of The PASCAL Chronicle which is downloadable in PDF format from our new website ( The reason is two-fold: firstly we wish to step up our contribution to raising awareness of our impact on the environment by downsizing printing and use of paper and secondly the electronic edition gives a chance to pupils, parents/guardians, graduates, alumni, staff members and friends to have access to the Chronicle at any time wherever they are. Last year in my message I addressed a number of issues of significance so I take this opportunity to update you on these issues. The unique academic programmes of the school (PASCAL English School Apolytirion or Apolytirion and GCE A Levels or Apolytirion and IB Diploma/Certificates) together with the school s competitive environment result in high student achievements. These achievements are reflected in the latest university placements/successful offers that came from these universities: Aberdeen, Birmingham, Cambridge, Cardiff, Essex, Kent, Lancaster, Leeds, Leicester, Loughborough, Manchester, Newcastle, Nottingham, Royal Holloway, Sheffield, Surrey and Warwick to mention a few. I am confident that our graduates will have equally good placements this year. For those students who took external examinations the External Exams Checkpoint proved to be a very good preparation. The new school uniform was introduced this year without major problems. In the beginning there was some resistance to change, especially regarding the blazer, but I am pleased with the end result. An online survey regarding the school uniform quality was carried out and we had valuable feedback from parents/guardians and pupils. The comments and requests for improvements were passed on to the manufacturer for implementation. The Headmistress, Senior Master/Mistresses, Heads of Year, Heads of Department and Form Teachers did an excellent job this year and the school s pastoral care system has been running efficiently. I would like to thank and congratulate the Prefects for their support and contribution towards achieving our pastoral care aims. Various clubs took place successfully on seven school days this year giving pupils the opportunity to develop their skills and inclinations outside classroom learning. The school continues to be innovative regarding the trip for Year 3. Therefore, this summer our pupils will be going to Scotland and England for a recreational and educational week. They will be visiting the Edinburgh castle, whiskey factory/distillery, Lake District national park, the city of York, university campuses, Old Trafford ( Theatre of Dreams ) and other places of interest. The PASCAL English School Lefkosia Alumni Association (PESLefAA) continues to be very active. More information regarding their events can be found on our website under alumni section. PASCAL Education schools in Lefkosia, Lemesos and Larnaka have yet again successfully organized The Hidden Talents Evening, English Creative Writing Competition, Science Fair, Sports Day and Summer Camp. In an effort to promote sports we have built 2 beach volleyball courts and we plan to continue enriching our sports facilities by adding new ones in the future. I would like to thank all who contributed to the production of this magazine which reflects the work, life and efforts of pupils and staff members of our school. 3

The PASCAL Chronicle Message from the Headmistress, Mrs Ariana Milutinovic It is that bitter sweet time of the year when the academic year is behind us and when we say goodbye to our graduating Year 6. It is also the time of the year when the results of all the efforts are evident. Nothing can be done to change past events but a lot can be done in terms of evaluating and reflecting on the achievements and setting new goals. My message to our pupils is to stay focused on their aims and their studies. Now, is the time to set goals for yourself in every single subject. By raising each grade in each subject by a few points you raise your grade point average. In Year 6 this means achieving as high as possible Apolytirion grade in June, which consequently means good university placement. In other Year groups it means working steadily towards a high Apolytirion grade over the years and ensuring success at school exams and at external exams be it IGCSEs, A levels or IB. The reflective process requires introspection but you also may benefit from speaking to those who know you well and who can help with their guidance. Hence, do speak to your Head of Year, your subject teacher when analyzing your this year s achieved grades in relation to your targets. They can help you to evaluate your achievement and they can give you practical advice on how to improve your performance. 4

The PASCAL Chronicle Message from the President of the Pupil s Council, Constantinos Antoniou Taking this opportunity, I would like to express my sincere gratitude to all the members of the school council for their continuous good work and support, as well as all the teaching staff and the pupils of our school for their efforts to have a smooth and fruitful cooperation. New ideas have been brought to light and have been processed in order to benefit a climate of understanding and support between teachers and students. The school council has tried its best to develop and support new ideas. After all, as Anatole France said An education isn t how much you have committed to memory, or even how much you know. It s being able to differentiate between what you know and what you don t. Being elected as President of the Pupil s Council this year, has not being an easy job. It has taken valuable time of my studies, but has proved to me that good management is the art of making problems so interesting and their solutions so constructive that everyone wants to get to work and deal with them. Thank you all for your support! The Student Council As every year, the presidents of each class are asked to vote for the school central council which consists of at least one student from each year. An important duty of these elected students is to listen and write down any problems and suggestions they may have about certain issues on behalf of the whole school and discuss them with the other students of the council and their teachers. Furthermore we organize events especially to raise money for charities with great success. Being in the school s central council is not an easy thing because you have a lot of responsibility but it is a rewarding and challenging experience. Sarah Foukarides 6B The Prefects Being a Prefect Students from Years 5 and 6 are chosen every year for the prestigious position of Prefect. A student is expected to act with maturity and be conscientious of the school regulations. Being a Prefect makes you realise why you should be responsible for every task you are doing. We are responsible for the organization of many events and the maintenance of proper behaviour of all students during breaks. Our duty is to establish discipline in the schoolyard, help all students and solve any disputes between them. The cooperation of all Prefects was excellent and this led to effective results. We are proud and we feel that being a Prefect is a unique experience. we prefects Maria Kountouri IB2 Christos Hadjinicolaou 5C In Remembrance of... George Novikov, a leukemia victim was a classmate of mine back when I was still in the 1 st year of middle school. He was from Ukraine and had that macho kind of look, he was quite tall for his age and very well built. He also acted that way, not in the way that he was rude to others but he wasn't afraid of anything. Even when he was getting weaker he still had a smile on his face and warmth in his heart for the people that went to visit him in the hospital. He was an excellent student and excelled in mathematics, you could say he was a human calculator. Mrs Caroline Yenovkian, our Maths teacher at the time had him as her star student. She used to play a game with the class that involved us standing up and she would tell us calculations do to in our mind and whoever couldn't continue sat down, George was always the last to sit down. He was a very hard-working student and you could see that in any lesson, even at the hospital the people who came to visit him brought him homework to do because he had requested it. He died in November 2005 and a month later we had a gathering of friends and relatives to say our final goodbyes. Finally, I would like to thank all the people who went to visit him while he was hospitalized and gave him courage and kept him company. Jimmy Antoniades 6A 6

2010- GRADUATES I can t believe that I am 18 already! Time passes by so quickly and I realize now how important it is to take advantage of every opportunity and experience during our school years. I am very excited at the prospect of starting university, especially in the U.K., but I am sad that I will not be able to spend much time with my school friends who have chosen different universities or will have to carry out their army service in Cyprus. I have so many amazing memories with my school friends from our trip to Paris and the breathtaking rides at Eurodisney. The ski trip to Lebanon was also great. Maybe there was no snow for skiing, but we still had a great time together! I have made some very special friends and I am sure that our friendship will grow stronger after graduation as we share our new experiences of our life at university, in the army, or whatever else life has in store for us! I am looking forward to starting university in September, although I know it will take a while to adjust to life away from home. My greatest challenge will be learning to cook for myself! If you have chosen the same university, avoid dropping in for dinner for the first few months. I wish all graduates the best of luck in their chosen careers and a happy life ahead. DON T FORGET TO KEEP IN TOUCH! Sarah Victoria Makariou 6C Finally, here we are; close to the end. We have almost finished school since in a few weeks we will no longer be Pascal English School students. PESL 11 will be a memory. I know there are times we feel school is boring and unfair, but after all, we will never live the things we lived here together, and this is what matters. We had both good and bad times together! I can still remember our first day here. Most of us were strangers and I guess we were all worried about what was coming. Can anyone forget our trip to France in year three? Will anyone forget those days in Agros in December 2010? So, I guess what I want to say to everyone is thanks for the memories... there are hundreds of them, but they do not fit into a tiny paragraph. And Good Luck to everyone! Despo Antoniou 6B At the age of six we entered school with tears in our eyes and at the age of seventeen we are leaving the same way with a sad face, remembering every moment of our school life wondering how did all this time fly away? Everyone will probably agree the most wonderful years in our lives are our school years and now that these are coming to an end I would like to tell all my fellow graduates: Life comes with no second chances, so live it to the fullest, do everything your heart desires, take a picture, laugh, forgive like you ve never been hurt, tell someone what they mean to you, dance in the rain, comfort a friend, live the moment. 8 The PASCAL Chronicle PASCAL English School Lefkosia Alumni Association (PESLefAA) Photos from pool-side summer party 2010 A custom in most schools in the world is to have an Alumni Association that bonds all graduates, aiming to keep them in touch year after year through different activities. This year, I am in a very delighted position to officially announce that our association, the Alumni Association of PES Lefkosia, is running for a 2 nd year with great success. and 2009 This Association started in 2009, when a small group of students decided to dedicate a part of their free time to create an organization that would be a strong link between all the graduates of PES Lefkosia. With the valuable help from Pascal Education, we reached our goals. The support we received and keep receiving from Pascal Education is priceless! During the first year of our association, our aim was to track more graduates and this we did. The number of members is now more than 600 and we are aiming to get every graduate aware of the Alumni. As a committee we decided to publish an annual newsletter so we keep all members updated with the association plans and news every year. A few of the events we organised in the last year included the Summer Party which was for graduates and friends. We also coordinated a charity support event over Christmas which proved to be very successful. The annual elections in September 2010 saw me elected as president of the Alumni for the second year running. With this role comes many responsibilities, and I promise to continue to do what I can for the best of this Organisation. I, as well as the committee, have plans to steer the Alumni towards a bright future. More graduates are involved with the committee than ever before, and the committee must show dedication and teamwork for an Alumni to function successfully. The committee s voluntary efforts will work towards the growth of this non-profitable Association. During we are planning a charity one-day seminar for ladies where special make-up artists, hairdressers and stylists will advise the participants all about beauty, make-up and fashion. Thus, for summer we will organize themed reunions for graduates of 2003 and Another big step for the Alumni is the membership cards that will be provided to all members for discounts for various shops, restaurants and enterprises. At this stage, I would like to note that anyone who is interested in advertising their company through our membership card is welcome to contact us. With this opportunity I would like to emphasise that this association has been formed BY graduates FOR the graduates. We intend to achieve our goal of being the most active Association in the country. I would like to thank Pascal Education and the school representative Caroline Yenovkian for the support and dedication they give to Our Association. For any questions, or if you wish to get involved in helping run any of our events, we would be delighted for you to contact us at peslef.alumni@live.com or peslefalumni@pascal.ac.cy Maria Loizou President 8

2010- Careers Counselling The role of the career counsellor in Pascal Education Career counsellors serve as teachers, confidants, and advisors to their students. Today's PASCAL school counsellors are vital members of the education team. They help students in the areas of academic achievement, career development, ensuring today's students become the productive, well-adjusted adults of tomorrow. The counsellor is qualified to address all students academic, career development needs by designing, implementing, evaluating and enhancing a comprehensive counseling programme that promotes and enhances student success. How can career counselling help you? Meeting with the school counsellor will be an opportunity for you to share your concerns. Your counselor will ask you several questions to gain a better idea of how career counseling would most benefit you. Your counselor may ask you to answer different types of questions to help identify your interests or personality preferences. Typically, students will then meet with the counselor for two to four additional sessions; however this is based on individual need. During these meetings, the career counselor will help you better understand all of the information that you learn about yourself and guide you in using this information to make a satisfying choice of major or occupation. Panayiotis Papadopoulos, Career Counsellor The Library My library This is the sixth year in which our school library provides students and staff access to a variety of resources. As Norman Cousins stated The library is not a shrine for the worship of books. It is not a temple where literacy incense must be burned or where one s devotion to the bound books is expressed in ritual. A library, to modify the famous metaphor of Socrates, should be the delivery room for the birth of ideas-a place where history comes to life Our school library has the right document for every need and through the library s activities such as The Annual Library Reading Competition, the Writer of the Month Competition, The Books Bazaar and The Scholastic Book Fair, students have the opportunity to use the library and improve their reading and writing skills. Why I should take part in the Library s Competitions? Our library organizes two reading competitions a year: the Annual Library Reading Competition and the Writer of the Month Competition. In the Annual Library Reading Competition each student tries to read as many books as he/she can throughout the competition, usually for six months. For each book every student produces a short summary. In the Writer of the Month Competition, each month reading books by two set writers are promoted by the library. The students who read the books written by the set writers will receive housepoints. Different writers, one for the upper school and one for the lower, are set each month and are announced via the library notice board. The students who participate must write a summary of each book they read and submit it to the librarian. Why you should take part in the Library s Competitions? First of all you have the opportunity to learn languages (English, Greek, and French) in a pleasant way. Through reading you increase your vocabulary, improve your spelling and learn new things. Also, you could win a lot of nice presents such as books and certificates which you could use in your university applications. The summary you write help you to give the overall meaning of the book and this will help you in the search of articles and writing abstracts for you assignments at university. After all, any user could find the right book. You just have to visit the school library! 9 Constantina Kamberi Librarian

The PASCAL Chronicle The Library Assistant Librarians For almost 4 years a lot of students work voluntarily in the library during break time. Assistant librarians draw attention to the library rules. A Head Assistant librarian, elected by the other assistants, supervises the duties every break. 12 The PASCAL Chronicle PROFILE Interview with Mrs Nectaria Hadgisergis, House Coordinator and English Teacher Q: Why did you become a teacher and chose English as your subject? A: I wanted to become a teacher from the age of 5. I used to dress as a teacher and use my younger sister as a student. This continued for many years but the official decision came when I was in the 6 th form and I was inspired by my English literature teacher. It then occurred to me that I wanted to be like him and hopefully one day have a similar effect on my students. Q: Why did you want to become House Coordinator? A: I m a very strong believer in the importance of developing the creative side to one s character. I also believe that high school is the place where children develop into unique individuals and this can only be accomplished if they re given the opportunity to explore, develop and grow. That s why as a House Coordinator my aim is to give students this opportunity and allow them to truly develop. Q: What is your favourite aspect of your job? A: My favourite aspect is the interactions I have with young people which keeps me young and makes me feel that I have a purpose. Q: What is your least favourite aspect of your job? A: Calculating marks and all the administrative paperwork! [Laughs] Q: How do you see yourself in 10years? A: Definitely still teaching and probably very stressed out and desperate since my sons will be teenagers and you know what that means!![laughs] Q: Does your profession provide you as much time as you would like to spend on yourself and your family? A: No. It is a job that you take home with you. Q: What is your favourite hobby? A: I don t have a lot of free time but I love writing, reading and acting. Q: Do you tend to keep in touch with previous graduates? A: Yes, some of them. Mostly this happens in the first couple of years after they graduate but in some special cases there are one or two students who are still in touch after six or seven years. Nc- aa ad- Q: If there is a student who is very strong academically but continuously misbehaves, how do you handle it? A: I would treat him/her exactly the same as I would treat any other student. So firstly I would try to speak to the student and get him or her to understand the problem and if this fails I would follow the school procedures. Q: What is, in your opinion, the most important trait a teacher should have? A: Passion for their subject. A true love for their subject they teach which is so much a part of them that they cannot help but want to share it with others. However, this would be useless if a teacher did not have communicative skills, patience and understanding of young people. Q: Can a student affect your life? A: strictly speaking, in order to be a professional in any job, your work should not affect your personal life. But given my very sensitive nature and the fact that I work with people, my answer is yes a student can affect my life. Q: As a teacher to your students, what would be the most honest and helpful advice you would give? A: As a teacher a piece of advice I would give a student would be focusing on education and learning which is something that will always play great role in their life and should not be neglected. But as a person my advice to them would be to explore life and every aspect of it, in this way opening their minds and enjoying it at the same time. 12 Tatiana Griva- IB1

Interschool Tennis Tournament: The tournament was jointly organized by the Senior School and the American Academy. Our school team consisted of two students, Yiannis Neophytou (3D) and Alexandra Kalli (5A), and was accompanied by Marios Kalapodas (P.E teacher). Both students gave an excellent performance and tried their best. Alexandra played some very good points during her round games but unfortunately didn t manage to go through to the next round. On the other hand, Yiannis was in a great shape and with no difficulty he managed to get through the group stage. At the quarter finals he kept his high performance and again with no difficulty he managed to move on to the semi-finals where he had to play against the favourite of the tournament. Yiannis did his best and managed to win a few games but, the level of the opponent as well as the fact that he had to play all the games for our school team, were two of the main reasons he didn t manage to go through to the final. Congratulations to both our players! MOEC Nicosia District Cross Country race: The race was organized by the Ministry of Education and Culture. As every year our school participated in the cross country competition and our student Kountouri Kalliopi performed to her best improving her personal record by one minute. Next year when she will be in Year 3 we are sure she will win the race and the 1st prize for our school. MOEC Nicosia District Track and Field Competition: Our school took part in the competition with two athletes, Stephanos Skordis (2C) and Kalliopi Kountouri (2F). Stephanos competed in the discus throw and after an excellent performance he won the 1st place. Kalliopi competed in the 600m and with no difficulty she also won the 1st place. Both our students did their very best and they will show the same zeal and enthusiasm when they represent our school in the MOEC Pancyprian Track and Field Competition. 16

2010- MOEC PANCYPRIAN Badminton Competition: The competition was organized by the Ministry of Education. Our school participated in the event with two students, Kyriacos Pissis (3E), in the u15 category, and George Antoniou (4D), in the u17 category. Our students were accompanied by the P.E Teacher Antonis Antonopoulos. Both students performed to a very high standard and managed to reach the final in their category. Both students won the second place after playing fantastic badminton in the final. This was another proud representation of our school in a sporting competition organized by the Ministry of Education. MOEC Nicosia DISTRICT and PANCYPRIAN Swimming Competition: Like every other year our school participated in both competitions with 6 students. The students were accompanied by the P.E Teacher Alexia Skouridou. The students who participated in the competition are: Elenitsa Hatzigianni, Andreas Kyriakides, Panayiotis Tryfonos, Alexandros Michaelides, Ioanna Kekkou, Vasos Aristocleous, in all four swimming events. Eleni, Panayiotis, Alexandros, Vasos and Ioanna managed to qualify to the Pancyprian Swimming Competition organized by the MOEC and after a great performance managed to be placed as follows: Alexandros Michaelides (Year 5): 3rd place, Panayiotis Tryfonos (Year 4): 6th place, Eleni Hatzigianni (Year 2): 1st place, Ioanna Kekkou (Year 2): 4th place, Vasos Aristocleous (Year 1): 7th place. National and International KARATE Competitions: Our students Antreas Markides (4E), Stavrina Antoniou (3B) and Panayiotis Papettas (1B) participated in the Polish National Karate Championship where they managed to be placed amongst the best karate athletes of the tournament. Panayiotis was placed 3rd in the u12-13 under 45kg category, Stavrina was placed 3rd in the U14-15 and U16-17 over 54kg category and Andreas was placed 4th in the U14-15 and U16-17 under 70kg category. Another student of ours, Renos Kyrou (3A), participated in the Balkan Karate Games in Greece where he was placed 2nd in the fighting category. Renos also participated in the European Karate Championship in Serbia organized by the European Karate Federation where he was placed 18th out of 32 in the Fighting under 52kg category. 17

The PASCAL Chronicle PSHE stands for Personal, Social and health education. It is a special lesson-course that takes place the first two periods every clubs day. The topic can be also discussed during the form period. In Year 4, the PSHE booklet is called Moving on. One of the book s most important topics are the discovery of yourself, discovering your skills, your talents, some disadvantages that you have and how to set smart targets and goals in order to become more organized and study more efficiently. This year, in year 4 we were given handouts about important information for actions during an earthquake. We discussed this information with the teacher and our classmates, stating different scenarios and discussing what we had to do in each case. The most interesting part of the conversation was that we all agreed that some of this information was entirely different from what we were taught when we were younger, and these made us change our mind about our behaviour during an earthquake. Other Year 4 classes, discussed topics like bullying, litter and environmental damage, which are topics that concern us very much, as we face them every day and as the new generation, we ve got to find and discuss ways of solving them. PSHE lessons are very interesting, as they encourage group work, conversation, friendly debate between classmates, and it helps students overcome the fear of public speaking, and become more comfortable in telling their opinion. Additionally it is a chance for students to express their opinion about other things that concern them, such as electronic crime, use of facebook etc. We finally gain a spherical and a more mature thinking and that makes us more prepared to enter the real world, the real society in a few years. Maria Soupashi 4A Animal Cruelty I see your glowing eyes saying your in pain Sweet heart I m sorry we re driving you insane They locked you in a cage? and they re making you sad? Sweet heart I m sorry I feel just so bad GET HELP, DO NOT LOOK ON, DO SOMETHING! Bullying will stop in under 10 seconds when peers (other children) intervene nearly 60% of the time. In playground observations, peers intervened and stopped bullying in more instances than adults did. BULLYING: SEE IT, GET HELP, IT!!! Louiza Paraskevaidou 1B I see your paws shiver in this bitter sight How can I leave you here this whole night I can t believe your suffering from all this madness They re drowning you in to a dead end of sadness I can t believe they starved you you poor little cat Just know that I love you and don t ever forget that!
