3 CHRISTIAN UNITY 2017 EPISTLE READINGS St. Paul's Letter to the Ephesians 4:7-13 Prokeimenon. Mode 1. Psalm 32.22,1 Let your mercy, O Lord, be upon us. Verse: Rejoice in the Lord, O ye righteous. BRETHREN, grace was given to each of us according to the measure of Christ's gift. Therefore it is said, "When he ascended on high he led a host of captives, and he gave gifts to men." (in saying, "He ascended," what does it mean but that he had also descended into the lower parts of the earth? He who descended is he who also ascended far above all the heavens, that he might fill all things.) And his gifts were that some should be apostles, some prophets, some evangelists, some pastors and teachers, to equip the saints for the work of ministry, for building up the body of Christ, until we all attain to the unity of the faith and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to mature manhood, to the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ. Therefore, if you or a loved one are, or will be, in the hospital, please contact the church office for a pastoral visit. Also, please notify the office if a friend or family member is in a rehab center, nursing home, assisted living facility or under hospice care. 7 PHILOPTOCHOS AND SAINT BASIL ACADEMY Saint Basil Academy is the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese home for children in need. It was established in 1944 to house orphaned children and later became a school to educate young Greek women to teach the Greek language in our parish communities. Today, it is a safe haven for children in offering a nurturing environment while attending to the child s developmental, educational, spiritual and material needs. As it is our tradition and custom, on Sunday, January 8, 2017, please join us for the Vasilopita Blessing and all the Ministries in the Rev. Andrew J. Demotses Educational Center after the 1 st Divine Liturgy during coffee hour. This age old tradition commenced in the fourth century, when Saint Basil the Great, who was a bishop, wanted to distribute money to the poor in his Diocese. He commissioned some women to bake sweetened bread, in which he arranged to place gold coins. Thus the families in cutting the bread to nourish themselves, were pleasantly surprised to find the coins. Our chapter supports the work and ministries of Saint Basil Academy. There will be a 2 nd tray offering at the end of both Liturgies on January 8 th for your donation. 9 Greek independence day luncheon Saturday, March 25, 2017 St. Vasilios Philoptochos invites you to attend the Independence Day Luncheon on Saturday, March 25, 2017 immediately following the Divine Liturgy. There will be a special hour of coffee and a brunch cocktail from 10:30 a.m. till 11:30 a.m. followed by our Lenten lunch at 11:45 a.m. in the Rev. Andrew J. Demotses Educational Center. The 25th of March represents two very important holidays -- the Annunciation and Greek Independence Day. The menu will be baked haddock, fava beans, cole slaw, feta & olives, rolls, wine and coffee for $15. Children s menu will be pizza, juice and cookies for $5. USING KNEELERS IN CHURCH Please exercise care when lowering your kneeler in Church. If you are using your foot to lower the kneeler please have your foot support the kneeler until it gently touches the floor. The multiple banging of the kneelers is a great distraction at the most solemn moment of the Divine Liturgy. Thank you for your attention to this issue. WELCOME TO OUR VISITORS Everyone is welcome in the Orthodox Church and may receive the blessed bread (antidoron) at the conclusion of the Divine Liturgy. Sadly, the divisions in the church prompt us all to work towards reunited Christianity. The culmination of this reunion will be the ability of all Christians to receive the Eucharist together. Until that blessed day arrives, only Orthodox Christians who are in good sacramental order are permitted to receive Holy Communion in the Orthodox Church.
