Secondly, Elder Paisios tells us that, if we are to grow in love toward our fellow man, we are to cut off those thoughts and feelings which are an offense against love: that is, judgments and resentments. He counseled that "We should never, even under the worst circumstances, allow a negative thought to penetrate our soul. The person, who, under all circumstances, is inclined to have positive thoughts, will always be a winner; his life will be a constant festivity, since it is constantly based on positive thinking" (Priestmonk Christodoulos Aggeloglou, Elder Paisios of the Holy Mountain Mount Athos, Greece, 1998, p. 31).One of Elder Paisios spiritual sons recalls, "Elder Paisios always urged us to think positively. Our positive thinking, however, should not be our ultimate aim; eventually our soul must be cleansed from our positive thoughts as well, and be left bare, having as its sole vestment Divine Grace granted to us through Holy Baptism. This is our aim, he used to say, to totally submit our mind to the Grace of God. The only thing Christ is asking from us is our humility. The rest is taken care of by His Grace. " In the beginning, we should willingly try to develop positive thoughts, which will gradually lead us to the perfect good, God, to Whom belongs all glory, honor and worship. On the contrary, to us belongs only the humility of our conceited attitude " (Ibid., p. 29). Elder Paisios teachings on thoughts and inner watchfulness, drawn from his own profound experience in the spiritual life, are particularly crucial for us who have been formed by modern Western culture. Because he spent so much time listening to people (both monastic and lay) and helping them with their problems, Elder Paisios became acutely aware of the various spiritual diseases afflicting modern Western man. Above all, he recognized and sought to treat the most prevalent disease: rationalism. Although the modern rationalist worldview was born in Western Europe during the Enlightenment era, it has progressively been inundating the entire world, including Orthodox lands such as Greece. Therefore, when Elder Paisios speaks to the spiritual malady of rationalism in contemporary Greece, he is also speaking to our spiritual malady in America and the West. Ultimately, the malady of modern rationalism comes down to one essential ingredient: trusting the conclusions of one s logical mind. We of the modern West have been raised with an underlying assumption, summed up in the well-known phrase of Rene Descartes at the beginning of the Enlightenment era: "I think, therefore I am." The worldview of modern rationalism, having lost an awareness of the immortal soul in man, leads us to believe that our thoughts are v/ho we are, and, conversely, that we are the sum total of our thoughts. Therefore, we automatically feel that we have to trust our thoughts, to take a stand for them, to defend them as we would our own flesh and blood. This is the essential fallacy of the modern worldview. It is precisely by placing absolute trust in the formulations of the fallen human mind rather than in divine revelation that modern Western man has come to water down or abandon his once-cherished Christian Faith. We Orthodox Christians living in the West must act against this influence by refusing to accord outright trust to our thoughts.elder Paisios teaches: "The devil does not hunt after those who are lost; he hunts after those who are aware, those who are close to God. He takes from them trust in God and begins to afflict them with self-assurance, logic, thinking, criticism. Therefore we should not trust our logical minds. Never believe your thoughts. "Live simply and without thinking too much, like a child with his father. Faith without too much thinking works wonders. The logical mind hinders the Grace of God and miracles. Practice patience without judging with the logical mind."elsewhere Elder Paisius counseled: "We ought always to be careful and be in constant hesitation about whether things are really as we think. For when someone is constantly occupied with his thoughts and trusts in them, the devil will manage things in such a way that he will make the man evil, even if by nature he was good."the ancient fathers did not trust their thoughts at all, but even in the smallest things, when they had to give an answer, they addressed the matter in their prayer, joining to it fasting, in order in some way to force Divine Grace to inform them what was the right answer according to God. And when they received the information, they gave the answer."today I observe that even with great matters, when someone asks, before he has even had the time to complete his question, we interrupt him and answer him. This shows that not only do we not seek enlightenment from the Grace of God, but we do not even judge with the reason God gave us. On the contrary, whatever our thoughts suggest to us, immediately, without hesitation, we trust it and consent to it, often with disastrous results."almost all of us view thoughts as being something simple and natural, and that is why we naively trust them. However, we should neither trust them nor accept them. "Thoughts are like airplanes flying in the air. If you ignore them, there is no problem. If you pay attention to them, you create an airport inside your head and permit them to land!" (Ibid., pp , 48).

Πρὸς Κορινθίους β' 6:16-18; 7:1 Ἀδελφοί, ὑμεῖς ἐστε ναὸς Θεοῦ ζῶντος, καθὼς εἶπεν ὁ θεός ὅτι Ἐνοικήσω ἐν αὐτοῖς, καὶ ἐμπεριπατήσω καὶ ἔσομαι αὐτῶν θεός, καὶ αὐτοὶ ἔσονταί μοι λαός. Since we have these promises, beloved, let us cleanse ourselves from every defilement of body and spirit, and make holiness perfect in the fear of God. Κατὰ Λουκᾶν Εἶπεν ὁ Κύριος καθὼς θέλετε ἵνα ποιῶσιν ὑμῖν οἱ ἄνθρωποι, ποιεῖτε αὐτοῖς ὁμοίως.καὶ εἰ ἀγαπᾶτε τοὺς ἀγαπῶντας ὑμᾶς, ποία ὑμῖν χάρις ἐστί; καὶ γὰρ οἱ ἁμαρτωλοὶ τοὺς ἀγαπῶντας αὐτοὺς ἀγαπῶσι.καὶ ἐὰν ἀγαθοποιῆτε τοὺς ἀγαθοποιοῦντας ὑμᾶς, ποία ὑμῖν χάρις ἐστί; καὶ γὰρ οἱ ἁμαρτωλοὶ τὸ αὐτὸ ποιοῦσι.καὶ ἐὰν δανείζητε παρ ὧν ἐλπίζετε ἀπολαβεῖν, ποία ὑμῖν χάρις ἐστί; καὶ γὰρ ἁμαρτωλοὶ ἁμαρτωλοῖς δανείζουσιν ἵνα ἀπολάβωσι τὰ ἴσα.πλὴν ἀγαπᾶτε τοὺς ἐχθροὺς ὑμῶν καὶ ἀγαθοποιεῖτε καὶ δανείζετε μηδὲν ἀπελπίζοντες, καὶ ἔσται ὁ μισθὸς ὑμῶν πολύς, καὶ ἔσεσθε υἱοὶ ὑψίστου, ὅτι αὐτὸς χρηστός ἐστιν ἐπὶ τοὺς ἀχαρίστους καὶ πονηρούς.γίνεσθε οὖν οἰκτίρμονες, καθὼς καὶ ὁ πατὴρ ὑμῶν οἰκτίρμων ἐστί. The Gospel of Luke 6:31-36 The Lord said, "And as you wish that men would do to you, do so to them. If you love those who love you, what credit is that to you? For even sinners love those who love them. And if you do good to those who do good to you, what credit is that to you? For even sinners do the same. And if you lend to those from whom you hope to receive, what credit is that to you? Even sinners lend to sinners, to receive as much again. But love your enemies, and do good, and lend, expecting nothing in return; and your reward will be great, and you will be sons of the Most High; for he is kind to the ungrateful and the selfish. Be merciful, even as your Father is merciful."

4 Ο ΑΣΚΗΤΗΣ ΚΑΙ Ο ΛΗΣΤΗΣ Ήταν ένας γέροντας ασκητής και αναχωρητής, όστις ασκήτευσεν εις τόπον έρημον χρόνους εβδομήκοντα με νηστείαν και παρθενίαν και αγρυπνίαν. Εις τόσους δε χρόνους όπου εδούλευε τον Θεόν δεν αξιώθη να ιδή καμμίαν οπτασίαν και αποκάλυψιν εκ Θεου. Και ελογίασε και έβαλε τούτο εις τον νουν του λέγων: «Μήπως δια καμμίαν αφορμήν όπου δεν ηξεύρω εγώ δεν αρέσει του Θεου η ασκησίς μου, και η εργασία μου θέλει είναι απαράδεκτος δια τούτο δεν δύναμαι να αποκαλυφθώ και να ιδώ κανένα μυστήριον».ταύτα διαλογιζόμενος ο γέρων άρχισε να δέεται και να παρακαλή τον Θεόν περισσότερον, προσευχόμενος και λέγων: «Κύριε εάν άρα σε αρέση η άσκησίς μου και δέχεσαι τα έργα μου, δέομαι, σου ο αμαρτωλός και ανάξιος, ίνα χαρίσης και εις εμέ ένα σταλαγμόν από τα χαρίσματά σου, να πληροφορηθώ με μίαν φανέρωσιν ενός μυστηρίου ότι ήκουσας την δέησίν μου, δια να περνώ θαρρετά και πληροφορημένα την ασκητικήν μου ζωήν». Ταύτα του αγίου γέροντος δεομένου και παρακαλούντος, ήλθε προς αυτόν φωνή εκ Θεου λέγουσα: «Αν είναι και αγαπάς να ιδής την δόξαν μου, πήγαινε μέσα εις την βαθυτάτην έρημον και θέλεις αποκαλυφθή μυστήρια».ως ήκουσε ταύτην την φωνήν ο γέρων, εξέβη από το κελλίον του και, ωσάν εμάκρυνεν εκείθεν, τον απάντησεν ένας λη στής, ο οποίος, καθώς είδε τον αββάν, ώρμησε με βίαν προς αυτόν θέλοντας να τον φονεύση. Και ωσάν τον επίασεν, είπε προς αυτόν: «Εις καλήν ώραν σε απάντησα, Γέ ροντα, να τελειώσω την εργασίαν μου να σωθώ. Διότι ημείς oι λησταί έχομεν τοιαύτην συνήθειαν και τοιούτον νόμον και πίστιν, ότι όποιος ημπορέσει να κάμη εκατόν φόνους, κατά πάσαν ανάγκην υπάγει εις τον παράδεισον. Λοιπόν εγώ, πολλά κοπιάσας έως τώρα, έκαμα φόνους εννενήκοντα εννέα και λείπωντάς με ένας είχα πολλήν φροντί δα και μέριμναν να τελειώσω την εκατοντάδα μου να σωθώ. Λοιπόν έχω σε μεγάλην χάριν και σε ευχαριστώ, οτι σήμερον δια εσένα απολαμβάνω τον παράδεισον».ταύτα λέγοντος του ληστού, ως τα ήκουσεν ο γέρων, εξεπλάγη και ετρόμαξεν εις τον εξαφνικόν και ανέλπιστον πειρασμόν. Και ατενίσας τα όμματα του νοός του προς τον θεόν τοιαύτα διαλογιζόμενος έλεγεν: «Αυτή είναι η δόξα σου, Δέσποτα Κύριε, όπου έταξες να δείξης εις εμέ τον δούλον σου; Τοιαύτην βουλήν με έδωκες τον αμαρτωλόν, να εξέβω από το κελλίον μου να με πληροφορήσης τοιούτον φοβερόν μυστήριον; Με τοιαύτας δωρεάς κά μνεις την αμοιβήν δια τους κόπους της ασκήσεως όπου έσυρα δια λόγου σου; Τώ ρα εγνώρισα αληθώς, Κύριε, ότι όλος μου ο κόπος της ασκήσεως ήταν μάταιος και πάσα προσευχή μου ελογίσθη έμπροσθεν σου ώς σίγχαμα και βδέλυγμα. Όμως ευχα ριστώ την φιλανθρωπίαν σου, Κύριε, ότι, καθώς γνωρίζεις, παιδεύεις την άναξιότητά μου, καθώς με πρέπει, διά τας αμέτρους άμαρτίας μου και με παρέδωκες εις χείρας ληστού και φονέως».τοιαύτα λέγων ο γέρων και λυπούμενος εδίψησε πολλά και είπε προς τον ληστήν: «Επειδή, ώ τέκνον, με το να είμαι αμαρτωλός, με επαρέδωκεν ο Θεός εις τας χείρας σου να με θανατώσης και γίνεται και η επιθυμία σου, καθώς ηγάπησας, και στερεύομαι την ζωήν, ωσάν κακός άνθρωπος όπου είμαι, δια τούτο παρακαλώ σε κάμε μου μίαν χάριν και ένα θέλημα παραμικρόν και δος μοι ολίγον νερόν να πίω, είτα αποκεφάλισόν με». Και ώς ήκουσεν ο ληστής τον λόγον του γέροντος, θέλοντας μετά προθυ μίας να πληρώση το ζητημά του, έβαλεν εις την θήκην την σπάθην, όπου εκράτει ξεγυμνωμένην, και έβγαλεν από τον κόλπον του ένα αγγείον και επήγεν εις το ποτάμι όπου ήτον εκεί σιμά και έσκυψε να το γεμώση, διά να φέρη του γέροντος να πίη. Και εκεί όπου ήθελε να γεμίση το αγγείον, εξεψύχησε και απέθανεν. Λοιπόν, ως απέρασεν ολίγη ώρα και δεν ήλθεν ο ληστής, διελογίζετο ο γέρων και έλεγε: «Μήπως και ήτον νυστασμένος και έπεσε και απεκοιμήθη και διά τούτο αργεί και έχω άδειαν να φύγω και να υπάγω εις το κελλίον μου. Αμή επειδή και είμαι γέρων, φοβούμαι, διότι δεν έχω δύναμιν να δράμω και ως αδύνατος θέλω κουρασθή, να με φθάση. Και αφού τον θυμώσω με τούτον τον τρόπον, θέλει με τυραννήση χωρίς λύπησιν κόπτοντάς με ζωντανόν εις πολλά κομμάτια. Λοιπόν ας μη φύγω, αμή ας υπάγω εις τον ποταμόν, να ιδώ τι κάμνει». Υπήγε λοιπόν ό γέρων μέ σα εις τοιούτους διαλογισμούς και ευρήκεν αυτόν αποθαμένον και, ως τον είδεν, εθαύμασε και εξεπλάγη. Και σηκώνοντας τα χέ ρια του εις τον ουρανόν έλεγε: «Κύριε φι λάνθρωπε, εάν ουκ αποκαλύψης μοι το μυστήριον τούτο, δεν βάνω τα χέρια μου κά τω. Λυπήσου λοιπόν τον κόπον μου και φανέρωσόν μου το πράγμα τούτο».ταύτα προσευχομένου του γέροντος, ήλθεν Άγγελος Κυρίου και είπε προς αυ τόν: «Βλέπεις, αββά, τούτον κείτεται έμπροσθέν σου αποθαμένος; Διά λόγου σου αναρπάσθηκεν αιφνιδίω θανάτω, διά να γλυτώσης εσύ και να μη σε θανατώση. Λοι πόν θάψε τον ως ένα σωσμένον. Διότι ή υπακοή όπου έκαμε προς εσένα και έκρυψε την φονεύτριαν σπάθην εις την θήκην της, διά να υπάγη να σε φέρη νερόν, να καταπαύση την φλόγα της δίψης σου, με αυτό το έργον εκαταπράυνε την οργήν του Θεού και τον εδέχθη ως εργάτην της υπακοής. Και η ομολογία των εννενήκοντα εννέα φόνων εις εξομολόγησιν ελογίσθη. Λοιπόν θάψε τον και έχε τον με τούς σωσμένους. Και γνώρισε διά τούτου το πέλαγος της φιλανθρωπίας και ευσπλαγχνίας του Θεού. Και πήγαινε χαίροντας εις το κελλίον σου και ας είσαι πρόθυμος εις τας προσευχάς σου και μη λυπήσαι και να λέγης, ότι πως είσαι αμαρτωλός και άμοιρος από αποκάλυψιν. Ιδού γαρ απεκάλυψέ σε ό Θεός ένα μυστήριον. Ήξευρε δε και τούτο, ότι όλοι oι κόποι της ασκήσεώς σου είναι δεκτοί ενώπιον του Θεού διότι δεν είναι κανένας κόπος όπου γίνεται δια τον Θεόν και να μην έλθη έμ προσθεν αυτού». Ταύτα ακούσας ο γέρων έθαψε τον νεκρόν.
