4 Editorial True Wind New Hands on DECK Νέα χέρια στο σκάφος, νέοι άνθρωποι επιβιβάζονται στο Rainbow Warrior III, το νεότευκτο επιχειρησιακό σκάφος της οργάνωσης προκειμένου να συμβάλλουν στον αγώνα για την σωτηρία του περιβάλλοντος. Κάποιες δεκαετίες πριν θα λέγαμε «προστασία», τώρα πια είναι έκκληση σωτηρίας. Δεν έχει μείνει πολύ, σε λίγο θα μπετώσουμε το Αιγαίο, θα κάνουμε χωματερή την Οία, το Μαγγανάρι, θα βουλιάξουμε τη Μήλο και θα βάλουμε μια φωτογραφία από πλαστικό να θυμόμαστε το Σαρακήνικο. Ωστόσο, παρατηρώ ότι και οι εταίροι δεν πάνε καλύτερα, έχουν ασφαλτοστρώσει εκατοντάδες παραλίες, κατακερματίσει δεκάδες είδη απειλούμενων ζώων και γενικά κάνουν ότι χειρότερο μπορούν για την μόλυνση και τον αφανισμό. Σε μια άλλη συνειδησιακή κατάσταση με ζητούμενο την καταστροφή του πλανήτη αμφιβάλλω αν θα κάναμε τόσο καλή δουλειά. Ίσως να είχαμε φαινόμενα με παράνομες δεντροφυτεύσεις, νοθείες με βιολογικές καλλιέργειες, κρυφούς καθαρισμούς κλπ. θα μπετώσουμε το Αιγαίο, θα κάνουμε χωματερή την Οία, θα βουλιάξουμε τη Μήλο και θα βάλουμε μια φωτογραφία από πλαστικό να θυμόμαστε το Σαρακήνικο Με δεδομένο λοιπόν ότι ο πλανήτης αποσυντίθεται θεωρώ ότι αυτός είναι και ο μεγαλύτερος ακήρυχτος πόλεμος που έχουμε να αντιμετωπίσουμε καθημερινά. Με αφορμή την εκστρατεία «new hands on deck», την δράση της Medasset* συντάσσομαι και βγαίνω στα χαρακώματα. Όχι, δεν είμαι ιδεολόγος, οικολόγος, βιολόγος, θεωρητικός, πράσινος, κουραστικός κλπ. Απλά πρακτικός Ο μεγάλος αγώνας είναι να φέρομαι έτσι ώστε να μην αφήνω πίσω σκουπίδια, να επαναχρησιμοποιώ ανάλογα υλικά, να επιστρέφω γυαλί και να επιστρέφω στο χώμα μη μαγειρεμένες τροφές. Ναι, για κάποιους είναι πολύ δύσκολο, δεν μπορούν να μην αφήσουν πετρέλαιο σε μορφή πλαστικού, μέταλλα σε μορφή αλουμινόχαρτου, δεν λυπούνται τις πηγές, τον φυσικό πλούτο που πρακτικά τώρα πια θα έπρεπε να λέγεται φυσική πενία. Εν τάχει και εν όψει νέου χρόνου, εύχομαι να συνταχθούμε όλοι απέναντι στο ρυπογόνο δαίμονα και οι περιβαλλοντικές οργανώσεις να μην έχουν αντικείμενο δράσης, το Rainbow Warrior και τα ομότεχνα σκάφη να κάνουν κρουαζιέρες σε γαλανά πελάγη. Αφιερωμένο στο κορίτσι που πέταξε ανέμελα χάρτινα και πλαστικά όσο ο γιός της έπαιζε αμέριμνος για το τί του επιφυλάσσει η ίδια του η μάνα. A few decades ago, we would use the term protection, now it is an actual cry for salvation. We re close to the point of building concrete blocks in the Aegean, turning Oia and Maganari in Ios into a scrap heap, scuttling Milos and putting up a plastic photo to remind us of Sarakiniko. However, I can t help noticing that the other European members are not doing any better. They have blacktopped hundreds of beaches, wiped out dozens of endangered species and, generally speaking, they are pulling up their sleeves ready to continue polluting and exterminating. I doubt that we could ever do a better job in an imaginary situation where our objective would be to destroy the planet. Perhaps we would then be facing illegal tree planting, adulterated food due to organic farming, sneaky secret cleanings, etc. Therefore, given that the planet is decaying day after day, I believe that this is the greatest unheralded war that we are called to fight, day after day. Following the new hands on deck campaign run by Medasset*, I choose to support the cause and get behind the barricade. No, I am not an idealist, ecologist, biologist, theoretician, green, irksome person, etc. I am simply practical. The great fight for me is to act without leaving garbage behind, reuse reusable material, recycle glass and bring back to the ground uncooked food. To όνομα αυτής New Hands On Deck Introducing the New Hands on Deck Greenpeace s new, custom-built flagship, the Rainbow Warrior, set sail for the first time in October Ένα νέο κλιμάκιο ευαισθητοποιημένων πολιτών για το περιβάλλον και τον πλανήτη μας που ακούει στο όνομα Νews hands on Deck ταξιδεύει με το νεότευκτο σκάφος της Greenpeace, το Rainbow Warrior III. H ομάδα απαρτίζεται από νέους με όρεξη για εργασία και διάθεση να συμβάλλουν αποτελεσματικά στις δράσεις της Greenpeace. Το βασικό πλήρωμα του σκάφους έχει έμπειρους ιστιοπλόους οι οποίοι έχουν εργαστεί σκληρά για το πρώτο ταξίδι. Σε αυτό το ταξίδι στο σκάφος επέβαιναν ακτιβιστές της Greenpeace, άπειροι στη ζωή στη θάλασσα. On board were a crew of experienced sailors, who worked hard to ready the ship for her first voyage; joining them, some Greenpeace activists new to life at sea. In our video series Stories from the Rainbow Warrior we are following the story of these young Greenpeace activists as they go from being activists to being crew. The Rainbow Warrior has a special place in the Greenpeace heart. After the first Warrior was launched in 1978, it immediately sailed to begin campaigning to end the hunting of whales and seals. A converted trawler, she was a far cry from the sleek sailing vessel of today. In 1985 masts and sails were added to support long range campaigning in the Pacific. 14

A 21st Century Warrior Μετά από 21 χρόνια με την Greenpeace, το σκάφος ήταν 57 ετών όταν αποσύρθηκε το καλοκαίρι του 2011 και μετατράπηκε σε πλωτό νοσοκομείο στο Μπαγκλαντές. Ένα ολοκαίνουργιο σκάφος θα το αντικαθιστούσε και ήταν η πρώτη φορά που ένα πλοίο της Greenpeace θα κατασκευαζόταν εξ αρχής. Χτισμένο με βάση τα πιο απαιτητικά περιβαλλοντικά πρότυπα το νέο σκάφος έχει μέγιστο μήκος στα 58 μέτρα, συνολική ιστιοφορία στα τ.μ και υβριδικούς κινητήρες. Getting on Board You can t sink a Rainbow In 1985, the Rainbow Warrior was in the Pacific, peacefully protesting to end French nuclear tests in response the French secret service bombed and sank the ship in Auckland harbour with the loss of a crewmember, photographer Fernando Pereira. In the aftermath of the attack the phrase «You can t sink a Rainbow» spread like wildfire around an outraged world. By 1990 the message had become a reality, and Rainbow Warrior set sail. The second Rainbow Warrior was also a converted trawler. For two decades years she sailed to the frontline of environmental crime, leading the campaign that finally ended nuclear weapons testing in the Pacific, a victory that paved the way for the world wide Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty. 12 Meteo Athanassios Argyriou* Οριζόντιες και κατακόρυφες δυνάμεις στον ατμοσφαιρικό αέρα Για να κινηθεί ένα σώμα πρέπει επάνω του να ασκηθεί δύναμη. Έτσι ο ατμοσφαιρικός αέρας κινείται κάτω από την επίδραση διαφόρων δυνάμεων. Αυτές κατατάσσονται σε δύο κατηγορίες. Η πρώτη κατηγορία περιλαμβάνει τις δυνάμεις που ασκούνται στον αέρα πάντα, είτε αυτός κινείται είτε είναι ακίνητος. Η δεύτερη κατηγορία περιλαμβάνει τις δυνάμεις που εμφανίζονται μόνο όταν ο αέρας αρχίσει να κινείται. Στα άρθρα που θα ακολουθήσουν θα περιγράψουμε τις δυνάμεις αυτές. Η πρώτη δύναμη που ασκείται στον αέρα είναι το βάρος του. Το βάρος έχει την τάση να κινεί τον αέρα προς την επιφάνεια της Γης. Ξέρουμε όμως ότι δεν είναι όλος ο αέρας συγκεντρωμένος στην επιφάνεια. Άρα στο βάρος αντιτίθεται μιά άλλη δύναμη που οφείλεται στη διαφορά πίεσης και ονομάζεται δύναμη βαροβαθμίδας. Η δύναμη βαροβαθμίδας έχει δύο συνιστώσες, την οριζόντια και την κατακόρυφη. Η κατακόρυφη συνιστώσα της βαροβαθμίδας είναι εκείνη που αντισταθμίζει το βάρος του αέρα. Οφείλεται σε διαφορές της πυκνότητας του αέρα (ανωστικές δυνάμεις). Η οριζόντια συνιστώσα της βαροβαθμίδας προκαλεί την οριζόντια κίνησή του, αυτό δηλαδή που ονομάζουμε άνεμο. Συνοψίζοντας οι δυνάμεις που ασκούνται πάντα στον αέρα είναι το βάρος του και η δύναμη βαροβαθμίδας. Horizontal and vertical forces on the atmospheric air We know that the motion of a body is due to forces exercised on it. This is true for the atmospheric air also. Forces applied on atmospheric air are classified in two categories. The first includes forces applied on the atmospheric air always whether the air moves or not. The second category includes forces generated only when the air starts moving. In the articles that will follow we will discuss all these forces. The most obvious force is the weight of the air. The weight force tends to accumulate all the air close to the surface of the Earth. We know however that not all air is close to the surface of Earth. This is because weight is balanced by another force due to pressure difference, the pressure gradient force. Pressure gradient force can be analyzed into a vertical and into a horizontal component. The vertical component is due to air density differences (buoyancy force) and balances weight. The horizontal pressure gradient force component creates the wind. We had a first look at her at the Genoa Boat Show, we examined her and fumbled our way round her. It s high time we shared our experience, so let us begin. Recently, while having dinner with friends, the Mazokist was brought up and it seems that it had stuck in everyone s mind. I was thinking that interesting boats and, generally, new ideas beyond the ordinary trigger extreme feelings of love or hatred. They never leave you uninterested. Dream on The console has a beautiful futuristic design while the people at the helm enjoy excellent visibility and three bucket Recaros that provide stability and comfort during her low flights. Taking a panoramic view of the vessel, we find a shower platform at the bow and a spacious sun bed. At the centre and placed in a perimetrical fashion there is a sofa. Part of the beautiful and well-designed hard top features filmed glass that ties in well with the windshield and the protection panels of the superstructure. The bow is completely clear and there is a hatch right at the bow for the safe storage of the chain and anchor. Με βαθύ V και 20ο στον «καθρέπτη» (deadrise@transom) το σκάφος σε προδιαθέτει να κατεβάσεις τις μανέτες, και να ταξιδέψεις αυτόν τον καλλίγραμμο όγκο με εκτόπισμα 20 τόνων που ελίσσεται σαν 8-μετρο ταχύπλοο. Κατασκευαστικά, η γάστρα έχει ενισχυθεί από ανθρακόνημα και ίνες αραμιδίου ώστε να προσφέρουν αυξημένη αντοχή σε σημεία που δέχεται μεγάλα φορτία κυρίως στις υψηλές ταχύτητες. Η Itama μας αρέσει.
