Demetrios Kounavis Parish Priest Sunday, February 5, 2017 Sunday of the Publican and Pharisee Triodion Begins Today The Pharisees were an ancient and outstanding sect among the Jews known for their diligent observance of the outward matters of the Law. Although, according to the word of our Lord, they "did all their works to be seen of men" (Matt. 23:5), and were hypocrites (ibid. 23: 13, 14, 15, etc.), because of the apparent holiness of their lives they were thought by all to be righteous, and separate from others, which is what the name Pharisee means. On the other hand, Publicans, collectors of the royal taxes, committed many injustices and extortions for filthy lucre's sake, and all held them to be sinners and unjust. It was therefore according to common opinion that the Lord Jesus in His parable signified a virtuous person by a Pharisee, and a sinner by a Publican, to teach His disciples the harm of pride and the profit of humble-mindedness. Since the chief weapon for virtue is humility, and the greatest hindrance to it is pride, the divine Fathers have set these three weeks before the Forty-day Fast as a preparation for the spiritual struggles of virtue. This present week they have called Harbinger, since it declares that the Fast is approaching; and they set humility as the foundation for all our spiritual labors by appointing that the parable of the Publican and the Pharisee be read today, even before the Fast begins, to teach, through the vaunting of the Pharisee, that the foul smoke of self-esteem and the stench of boasting drives away the grace of the Spirit, strips man of all his virtue, and casts him into the pits of Hades; and, through the repentance and contrite prayer of the Publican, that humility confers upon the sinner forgiveness of all his wicked deeds and raises him up to the greatest heights. The Pharisee stood and prayed thus with himself, 'God, I thank you that I am not like other men, extortioners, unjust, adulterers, or even like this tax collector. I fast twice a week, I give tithes of all that I get.' But the tax collector, standing far off, would not even lift up his eyes to heaven, but beat his breast, saying, 'God, be merciful to me a sinner!' I tell you, this man went down to his house justified rather than the other; for everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, but he who humbles himself will be exalted."

3 A Peaceful Soul Generates a Pure Heart For every man, peace of soul is precious. With those who have attained peace of soul, the body can be in constant motion - in work, in pain - but their souls, affixed to God, always remain in unwavering peace. St. Seraphim of Sarov teaches: "It is necessary to concern oneself with all means in order to preserve peace of soul and not to be disturbed by the insults of others. That is why it is necessary, at all costs, to restrain yourself from anger with the help of vigilance over one's self, preserving the mind and heart from indecent movements. For preserving peace of soul, it is also necessary to avoid judging others. By not judging and by silence, peace of the soul is preserved. When a man is in such a state of mind, he receives divine revelations. In order for man to be preserved from judging others, he must be vigilant over himself; he must not receive from anyone non-spiritual thoughts and he should be dead toward everything worldly. We must tirelessly guard the heart from indecent thoughts and influences. `With closest custody, guard your heart for in it are the sources of life' (Proverbs 4:23). From perpetual vigilance over the heart, purity is born, in which the Lord is seen according to the words of eternal truth: `Blessed are the pure in heart: for they shall see God'" (Matthew 5:8).

4 Διδακτική ανατολική διήγηση Οταν βρισκόμουνα στην Γερμανία, άκουσα σ ένα κήρυγμα διασήμου Γερμανού ιεραποστόλου και ιεροκήρυκα μια βαθυστόχαστη και συμβολική διήγηση, παρμένη από συλλογή σοφών θρύλων και μύθων της Ανατολής. Τη διήγηση αυτή διάβασα αργότερα και σ' ένα από τα εποικοδομητικά βιβλία, που ό ίδιος ιεραπόστολος έχει γράψει, και στη συνέχεια την παρέθεσα σε νεοελληνική μετάφραση σ' ένα από τα δημοσιεύματα μου. Κρίνω σκόπιμο να την υπενθυμίσω στους αναγνώστες του «Εφημερίου», διότι είναι ωφέλιμη τόσον για την προσωπική ζωή τους, όσον και για το συμβουλευτικό τους έργο. Τι λέγει, λοιπόν, ή διήγηση αύτη; Ήταν κάποτε ένας καλός βασιλιάς. Ό γιός του είχε πάρει τον κακό δρόμο. Οι συμβουλές και τα φιλικά λόγια του πατέρα του, όπως κι οι διάφορες τιμωρίες, δεν ωφελούσαν σε τίποτε. Ό γιός εξακολουθούσε να ζει μέσα στην αμαρτία. Τέλος ό πατέρας, καθώς ήταν απελπισμένος, αποφάσισε να χρησιμοποίηση και το έξης μέσο, για να διόρθωση το παιδί του. Μια Κυριακή προσκάλεσε το γιό του στην αίθουσα τον θρόνου. Εκεί πάνω σ' ένα τραπέζι είχε τοποθετήσει ένα κύπελλο, γεμάτο από πολύτιμο αρωματικό λάδι. Το λάδι αυτό είχε παλαιότερα μεγάλη αξία στην Ανατολή. Τέτοιο λάδι ειχεν ύπ' όψιν του κι ό Ψαλμωδός, όταν έλεγε: «Έλίπανας εν έλαίφ την κεφαλήν μου» (Ψαλμ.χβ 5). Μπροστά στο τραπέζι στέκονταν μόνο στρατιώτες της σωματοφυλακής του βασιλέως με τα ξίφη τραβηγμένα έξω άπ' τη θήκη. Δίπλα στο κύπελλο με το λάδι βρισκόταν ένας χάρτης με το σχεδιάγραμμα των οδών της πόλεως. Τότε ό πατέρας είπε στον γιό του: «θα κάμεις μια μικρή περιοδεία μέσα στην πόλη. Μέσα στον χάρτη αυτόν σου σημείωσα ένα δρόμο, πού θα ακολουθήσεις. Θα ξεκινήσεις τώρα αμέσως, κρατώντας μπροστά σου αυτό το γεμάτο κύπελλο. 'Αλλοίμονό σου, αν στο δρόμο σου χυθεί έστω και μια μόνο σταγόνα απ το πολύτιμο αυτό λάδι. Οι δυο στρατιώτες έχουν αυστηρή διαταγή να σε αποκεφαλίσουν αμέσως. Γνωρίζεις δε, πώς οι διαταγές μου είναι γι' αυτούς απολύτως δεσμευτικές». Ό γιός ξεκινάει κάνοντας ο, τι τον διέταξε ό πατέρας τον, Αφού πέρασε αρκετός χρόνος, ξαναγυρίζει πίσω. Δεν τον είχε χυθεί ούτε μια σταγόνα λαδιού. «Τι είδες, παιδί μου, στον δρόμο;», ερώτησε ό πατέρας. «Τίποτα!», ήταν ή απάντηση του γιού. «Τι; Δεν είδες τίποτα; Μα σήμερα είναι ή εμποροπανήγυρις της χρονιάς! Παντού υπάρχουν χρωματιστές ρεκλάμες, πού προσκαλούν στους τόπους της διασκεδάσεως. Παντού στους δρόμους υπάρχουν διάφορα θεάματα, γελωτοποιοί και θαυματοποιοί. Δεν είδες τίποτα από όλα αυτά;».«"όχι, πατέρα! 'Απ' όλα αυτά δεν είδα τίποτα». «Μα αν δεν είδες τίποτα, τότε τί άκουσες στο δρόμο;», ρώτησε πάλι ό πατέρας. «Τίποτα», ήταν πάλι ή απάντησης του γιου. «Τι; Δεν άκουσες τις φλογέρες; Δεν άκουσες τις τρομπέτες και τόσα άλλα μουσικά όργανα; Δεν άκουσες όλους αυτούς, πού διαφήμιζαν τα κέντρα της διασκεδάσεως; Δεν άκουσες όλα αυτά, πού άλλοτε τόσον πολύ σου τραβούσαν την προσοχή;» «Πατέρα μου, μόνον ένα πράγμα α- ντηχούσε στ' αυτιά μου, ό σοβαρός λόγος σου: «'Αλλοίμονό σου, αν στον δρόμο σου χυθεί έστω και μια σταγόνα άπ' το πολύτιμο αυτό λάδι». Γι' αυτό ένα μόνο πράγμα έβλεπα: το λαδί αυτό. "Όλη μου ή προσοχή ήταν συγκεντρωμένη σ' αυτό. Έτρεμα μήπως μου χυθεί μια σταγόνα. Πατέρα μου, σ ευχαριστώ για αυτό το μάθημα, πού μου έκαμες. Τώρα ξεύρω πια τι πρέπει να κάμω, για να μη με αιχμαλωτίζει το κακό. Πατέρα μου, με έσωσες». Αλήθεια, πολύ διδακτική είναι ή ω- ραία αυτή διήγηοις. Ιδιαίτερα χρήσιμη είναι για τους ιερείς. "Όταν ένα πνευματικό τους τέκνο λέγει σ' αυτούς πώς δεν μπορεί ν' απαλλαγή άπ' τις κακές συνήθειες και τα πάθη του, ίσως θα μπορούσαν να του διηγηθούν τον ανατολικό αυτό συμβολικό μύθο, που μπορεί να υπενθύμισή πολλές χριστιανικές αλήθειες: "Όλοι μας είμαστε παιδιά του Υψίστου Βασιλέως και κληρονόμοι του Θεού. Ό Χριστός σταυρώθηκε και αναστήθηκε για μας. Πρέπει λοιπόν να στρέφομε διαρκώς τη σκέψη μας στο σωτηριώδες έργο του Χρίστου και στο αίμα Του, πού έτρεξε από τις άγιες πληγές Του πάνω στον Σταυρό. Ούτε μια σταγόνα από το πολύτιμο αυτό αίμα δεν πρέπει για μας να είναι χαμένη. Ή σκέψη αυτή θα μας βοηθοί να έχομε μάτια κι αυτιά όχι για τα απατηλά θέλγητρα της αμαρτίας, αλλά μόνο για την όμορφη και αληθινά ευτυχισμένη ζωή, την οποία μας χαρίζει ό Χριστός. "Ας χρησιμοποιούν λοιπόν οι ιερείς μας -ιδίως οι εξομολόγοι- τη σοφή διήγηση της Ανατολής στο συμβουλευτικό τους έργο για εκείνους, πού παρασύρονται εύκολα στην αμαρτία. Άλλα ας ενθυμούνται και οι ίδιοι για την προσωπική τους ζωή τη βαθυστόχαστη αλήθεια της αποστολής τους όταν έχουν συνείδηση, ότι τα χέρια τους κρατάνε συχνά το Σώμα και Αίμα του Κυρίου, όταν ενθυμούνται διαρκώς, ότι είναι διάκονοι του Επουρανίου Βασιλέως και φρουροί ουρανίων θησαυρών, τότε θα είναι προσεκτικοί σε όλες τους τις εκδηλώσεις. 5 The Gift of Faith and Truth Belongs to the Humble by St. Nikolai Velimirovich "When the Messiah [Christ] comes, will He perform more signs than this man has done?" (John 7:31). The Lord Jesus performed miraculous works before all and all saw but not all believed. The people witnessed His miracles and believed in Him. Servants heard His words and believed in Him. But the leaders of the people and the masters of the servants also witnessed His miracles and did not believe in Him. And so, in those days the words of the Savior came true: "But many who are first will be last, and the last will be first" (Matthew 19:30). "For behold, some who are last who will be first, and some are first who will be last" (Luke 13:30). Those who were first in honor and authority were last in having faith in Him; and those who were last in honor and authority were the first in having faith in Him. Why did the people and servants believe and the princes and scribes not believe? Because, the people and servants considered themselves insignificant and unimportant and did not have any personal pride nor envy toward Christ. The people and servants, without malice and prejudice, looked upon the divine miracles and listened to the divine words and were amazed and rejoiced. The princes and the scribes considered themselves first among the people and in the world and so they were filled with pride and envy and were unable, even for a moment, to look upon the miraculous works nor to listen to the divine words without malice and envy. Brethren, do you see how man, without humility and meekness, is unable even to recognize truth nor to rejoice in the truth? Do you see how the proud and the envious do not even allow God to be ahead of them? As did Satan, at one time! Lord Jesus, Eternal Truth, cleanse our hearts of pride and envy that we may be able to see You and to rejoice in You. To You be glory and thanks always. Amen.

Θα αναχωρήσουμε Οκτωβρίου 29-9 Νοεμβρίου Εάν θέλετε να ταξιδέψετε σε αυτά τα άγια μέρη, να μιλήσετε με τον π. Δημήτριο. In conjunction with St. Nicholas Church and Fr. Christodoulos, we are planning a trip to the Holy Land and Mt. Sinai. The trip will be from October 29 - November 9th. Details will be coming soon. This is a once in an lifetime experience! HOLY COMMUNION While we pray and work for the reconciliation and unity of all the world s Christians, the reality remains that there is still no intercommunion between our Orthodox Churches and the Churches of the West. This means that only baptized, chrismated and observant Orthodox faithful receive communion in our churches. At the same time, we warmly welcome all non- Orthodox to join us in prayer and celebration, and humbly offer to all present the Antidoro bread of fellowship at the end of the service. We offer this important symbol instead of the Gifts, in the words of the Apostle Paul, Till we all come to the unity of the Faith (Eph. 4.13).
