2 welcome harry danalis PRESIDENT, GREEK ORTHODOX COMMUNITY OF NSW nia karteris CHAIR, GREEK FESTIVAL OF SYDNEY At a time in Australia s history when there is a concerted effort by some to discredit multiculturalism and to stir the flames of racism the presentation of the Greek Festival of Sydney is a timely reminder of the success of multiculturalism and the rich cultural diversity with which it has enriched Australian society. The Greek Festival of Sydney is an example of this rich diversity and also a celebration of our community s struggle against assimilation and racism. The events in this year s program provide a perfect example of how our identity as migrants has grown and redefined itself by our Australian experience so that it has become uniquely a product of both. More importantly, in the main, the Australian community has embraced this cultural diversity and multiculturalism as is evident from the thousands of Australians who each year support our Festival and its various events. On behalf of the Greek Orthodox Community of NSW I extend my appreciation to the festival committee, to the staff of the Greek Orthodox Community, and to the many volunteers who work tirelessly to make the festival a success and to our many sponsors for their invaluable support. I urge everyone to continue to support this important cultural festival in our community. H. Last year we had a record number of people, (over ) head down to the Greek Fest Darling Harbour. This year, you are all welcome to join us and help beat the record and make us for the second time in a row Australia s biggest community festival. Not only will we have events that are purely Greek experiences, but this year there is a record number of cross cultural events, where we have invited the Vietnamese, Arabic and Cuban communities to participate and run events in the Festival. There will be a procession led by students of the Greek Orthodox Community Afternoon & Saturday Schools and culminating in a wreath laying ceremony, poetry readings and traditional dancing. (For details see coupon at page 23) language Sun 26 March, 10am - 10pm Darling Harbour All Presented by famed Greek Artistic Director and President of the Pan-Hellenic Federation of Visual and Audio Entertainment, writer, actor, and scholar, Vasilis Kolovos, this unique lecture refers to the Greek Revolution of 1821 (against the Ottoman Empire), the events that marked it and its character and the visions that inflamed its fighters. Georgios Karaiskakis, the nun s son, was one of its basic protagonists. A genius of strategy, he possessed a strong class political instinct, was unyielding, honest and ingenious. He died as he was born, stripped of all possessions. Had Karaiskakis not been assassinated by a fellow Greek while still young, had his strategic assessments been trusted, the battle of Faliro, which determined the outcome of the national struggle, would have a different result and the development of the revolution would have had taken different directions, in favour of the people, against the will of the foreign protector powers and their local lackeys. Gifted and inventive, Maria s love for painting has seen her become one of Greece s finest artists, travelling the world exhibiting her works. In this rare exhibition Maria brings a collection of her work offering her vision of the beauty of Greek landscape and architecture. The exhibition, entitled; Greece: Past and Present, is a retrospective exhibition in three parts: 1. Pieces illustrating ancient Greek spirit, 2. Scenery and parts of Greece that are disappearing, 3. Portraits of famous Greeks who made their mark on Greek culture. Opening night will feature an introduction by Maria herself in English and Greek, alongside Greek mezedes, treats and Greek wine. 6

5 sex, drugs and music IN MODERN GREECE - Presented By Vrasidas Karalis This presentation is focused around Rebetika singers and the counterculture in contemporary Greece - from the rock groups of the sixties and seventies to the punk and alternative groups of today. The Greek music scene is full of pleasant surprises and contradictions, together with serious attempts to modernise a very old tradition. In it we see the co-existence of very traditional music expression together with jazz, rock, and ethnic music, which has been mixed with sounds and the music of the new migrant communities now living in the country. During the talk some crucial Rebetika figures will be presented as well as great rock groups like Socrates and the Idols, together with some radical voices expressing the anxieties and the aspirations of Greek society. The presentation will include music from all these periods and video clips from some of the most important Greek music of today. Wed 29 March, 7pm - 9pm Museum of Sydney, AGL Theatre, Cnr Phillip & Bridge Streets, Sydney contact homer day The Greek Festival of Sydney and The Historic Houses Trust present HOMER DAY. The Historic Houses Trust has offered an amazing, The Mint, for a presentation on Homer. Hosted by Associate Professor Vrasidas Karalis, Head of the Modern Greek Department at Sydney University, this presentation discusses who Homer was and what kind of world he lived in. Through readings from his work and the performance of music from classical Greece, the world of Homer will come to life, providing the audience an insight into the father of culture, and a tribute to the work of the first European poet. The afternoon includes a special performance featuring the Foundation Professor of Music at the University of Western Sydney, composer, performer and musicologist, Michael Atherton and his group Melismos, playing music from ancient Greece with instruments modelled on ancient Greek originals. Sat 1 April, 5pm - 8pm The MINT, 10 Macquarie St, Sydney the philosophers and the chefs THE PHILOSOPHY OF LOVE - LUNCH The Philosophy of Love by Dr Edward Spence is a celebrated annual event of the Greek Festival of Sydney. Through a talk, dramatic performance by actors, audience participation and liberating discussion, The Philosophy of Love will explore the contemporary relevance and significance of aspects of Plato s philosophy. In particular, through Plato s dialogue The Symposium, it will explore the concept of love in all its different manifestations. The philosophical presentation will be accompanied throughout by a sumptuous banquet of food on the theme of love with a selection of wines by the highly awarded Perama s celebrated chefs David and Harry. In this trip to Australia Georgia presents a lecture on the war unleashed upon people today and its many aspects. It is military (as the last stage of enforcement of the will of the strong upon the weak), it is economic, it is ideological, and it is cultural. So what must a women s role as a responsible fighter for peace be? Combining dance, music, history and culture, the event features two distinguished guests, Mr. Kostas Gikas and Mr. Gregory Mikronis, who will walk the audience through the various umes and dance routines that the performance features. A graduate of Gymnastics, Mr. Gregory Mikronis is the Association s Dancing Instructor and a specialist in Greek folk dance. Mr. Kostas Gikas is the ume designer of the Folklore Museum of The Peloponnese and official ume designer for the Association. Set to take place at Sydney s prestigious Town Hall, the program will include dance routines from all over Greece to music by famous composers such as Mikis Theodorakis, Manos Hadjidakis and Stavros Xarhakos. This is a one off event and a major highlight of the Greek Festival of Sydney

6 women in the australian greek diaspora TALK BY DR PANAYOTA NAZOU Beyond the role of mother and wife, Greek women have been the foundation of the community in Australia. Dr Panayota Nazou will be giving a public talk on Greek Australian Women in the Diaspora. Through the use of humour and fact, this talk celebrates their achievements and their hard work in the face of adversity. Tue 4 April, 11.30am pm Georges River Sailing Club, Sanoni Ave, Dolls Point language Greek the art of the parthenon, lord elgin and the new acropolis museum, athens In this highly visual presentation Kevin O Toole will conduct an exploration of the art of the Parthenon: the architecture and the sculptural art (the pediments, the metopes, and the frieze). The Parthenon and its art will be put into their historical context and followed through the ages to the present day. The new Acropolis Museum under construction in Athens will be introduced along with the hopes the museum will carry for the preservation in our memory of that stunning cultural phenomenon, the Age of Classical Athens, which the Parthenon in so many ways represents. Tue 4 April, 7pm - 9pm The Barnet Room, Customs House, The Rocks FOTIS AGGOULES behind the barricades and the barbed wires LECTURE BY VASILIS KOLOVOS Presented by famed Greek Artistic Director, President of the Pan-Hellenic Federation of Visual and Audio Entertainment, writer, actor, and scholar, Vasilis Kolovos discusses Fotis Aggoules, the people s poet. A freedom fighter from Chios, Aggoules is one of the most representative cases of a creator who lived and wrote during the harsh period between the two world wars, who grew up and matured poetically and ideologically amidst poverty, exploitation, the barbarism of fascist occupation, behind the barbed wire and bars of jails. He is the proletarian poet fisherman of Chios who sang of the struggling people, who marched to death within the horror of the civil war and post civil war period. He is the poet who behind the barbed wire and the barricades yelled at the oppressors: Don t expect us to give in, not even for a minute. Not even as much as the cypress bands in the storm, We have loved life very much, far too much. Wed 5 April, 7pm - 9pm Lakemba St, Lakemba language Greek café carnivale - melismos A remarkable presentation of ancient Greek music by local trio Melismos, featuring songs based on ancient musical fragments, including lines written by Euripides in 408BC, preserved on papyrus. The songs have been realised from surviving musical fragments and are performed on copies of ancient instruments made by Charalambos Vatiliotis. Melismos will also include some recent folk music (demotika) in celebration of Australia s Greek heritage. The play is rich in culture, music, colourful characters and stories. Through her character Alithea, Toni Allayialis also explores ways that women of her own generation have sought to reconcile the traditional ways with a new life in Australia. For Alithea, today is yet another of-course day. Like her grandmother s before her, Alithea s kitchen is filled with the bubbling aroma of garlic and tomatoes cooking in wine, the toddlers are screaming, she is on her own and there are buckets of nappies piling sky high. But this is Australia and a million miles from the traditions of the past. Or is it?

7 kazantzakis and islam Nikos Kazantzakis, author of Zorba the Greek and The Last Temptation of Christ, had a personal knowledge of Islam. His attitude is one of active interest and sensitive engagement with Islam and other religious traditions. His openness to different ideas in his search for meaning in life can be an example to us all. The program includes a brief introduction to Islam by Professor Ahmad Shboul, a presentation of some of Kazantzakis writings on the topic by Dr Alfred Vincent, and readings by Litsa Diakovasili, Anastasia Anastasiadis, and special guest Mary Kostakidis. Talks will be in English with Greek summaries; readings will be in English with some also in Greek. This project invites members of the community to attend Nolas art studio In Rozelle where three reproduction Byzantine mosaics are being created. The art studio is currently working on the reproductions of the Virgin Mary and Jesus Christ, which when completed will appear above the front entrance of one of Sydney s most beautiful Greek Orthodox Churches. Under the guidance of nolas art studio the hands of the community are invited to lay mosaic tiles and be part of an experience that will also be enjoyed by future generations. Everyone welcome. byzantine mani: art and architecture BY LEONIDAS DRONGARIS Presented by Anastasia Anastasiadis and Alfred Vincent, this documentary explores the thousands of churches, monasteries and small country chapels spread throughout the Peloponnese today. Anonymous builders created an environment through which people connected with the holy, whilst artists brought the divine into everyday life and made people feel the saints as protectors and helpers. This superb heritage makes Mani a living museum of Byzantine culture in today s Greece. The event includes coffee and sweets. shifting ground A survey of emerging contemporary artists of Greek descent. Featuring five contemporary artists, Shifting Ground surveys a new generation of artists working within the realms of conceptual, installation and performance art. Selected for their disparate conceptual and aesthetic tendencies, the artists investigate the shifting ground of Greek Australian identity and art over recent periods and reflect the extent to which current events influence these shifts. Η Αναστασία Αναστασιάδη και ο Δρ. Alfred Vincent παρουσιάζουν το ντοκιμαντέρ του Λεωνίδα Δρωνγκάρη, που εξερευνά τις χιλιάδες εκκλησίες, μοναστήρια και μικρά εξοχικά παρεκκλήσια, διασπαρμένα σήμερα σε ολόκληρη την Πελοπόννησο.
